I had a sit-down today with J.J. after he signed his new deal at Hawks headquarters. Thought you might want to peep the Q and A:
Q. Can you take me through the process of when you met with the Hawks, they made the offer and then you also had interest from other teams?
A. “It was pretty much the free-agency frenzy that was going on. It was a fun time. I enjoyed it. All along I pretty much felt like Atlanta was the place for me. I have had five great years here. I haven’t regretted anything since I’ve been here. I’ve had a lot of fun. The team has improved every year. The coach and the ownership have done everything possible to improve as a team. I think right now, it is pretty much our time. We have just got to believe in ourselves.”
Q. Did the Hawks discuss their plans for the roster during the meeting?
A. “We kind of sat and talked. They pretty much said how they felt about me coming back to the team and how much they wanted me back. It was a great meeting. They said they are going to do whatever possible to improve the team. They have been doing that since Day One. You can’t argue with that. . . . It was really a brief meeting. We didn’t really have to sit and talk long. I understood where they were coming from, and that was that.”
Q. What did it mean to you for them to offer you the maximum deal?
A. “It meant a lot to know they have got the confidence in me to try to lead this team in the right direction and over the hump. I think we can definitely get over the hump. Knowing they have my back like that makes me want to work even harder. I’m sure I won’t let them down.”
Q. You know how it goes when guys get maximum deals. There’s going to be even more scrutiny of your performance. Are you prepared for that?
A. “I know it’s going to come. I can’t really worry about that. I have to control the things I can control and go and compete night-in and night-out and have fun with it. At the same time, this is definitely my job. I am up for the challenge.”
Q. L.D. has talked about making changes in the offense to get the ball moving more. He says that will help take pressure off of you. Are you cool with not having the ball in your hands so much?
A. “It definitely takes a lot of pressure off of me. Me and Drew talked about it. He wants me doing a lot more catching and shooting. Not creating so much until late in the game so I am not so worn down. I respect his opinion on anything. He is our head coach now. He is definitely going to make the right decisions.”
Q. Your agent said you planned to recruit other players. Any ideas on the guys you’d like to come play with you?
A. “(Laughs). We have to go out and see what is out there. Honestly, I think we have the team now we can win with. That’s no question. The last two years we have averaged 50 wins. We all know it’s time to step up and take it to the next level. I think with the team we’ve got right now we can do that.”
Q. Some fans still have hard feelings about your comments during the playoffs. It seems like that has contributed to some of the negative reaction to the news that the Hawks were offering you the contract. Now that some time has passed, do you have anything more to say about what happened?
A. “It was just in the heat of the moment. We had a tough battle against a great team in Orlando. I think I can speak for a lot of guys on the team [that] there was some frustrating moments. I was just really speaking out of frustration.”
Q. What would you say to the fans who are still mad about it?
A. “There is nothing I can do about it now. I just look forward to the season and getting out there and playing. This is my job; this is what I do. I am going to come out and try to have fun and hopefully change their minds.”
Q. There has been lots of criticism from media and fans around the league about your contract. Have you seen or heard it?
A. “Naw. Uh-uh.”
Q. There are lots of people saying it’s a bad deal for the Hawks. Does that bother you?
A. “There is nothing I can do. You have got to deal with it. You deal with the bad. It doesn’t bother me at all. I am going to still come out and do my job and be effective and do whatever it takes to win. You can’t worry about what people say about you. You have got to move on.”
Q. Do you feel added pressure to live up to the contract?
A. “Not at all. I don’t feel no pressure at all. All I have got to do is keep playing my game.”

What teams did the Hawks have problems with?
1. Magic, Bucks, and Thunder
-This means that they have problems with quick point guards, which means Mike Bibby is a problem.
-They also have great big men which means Al Horford is playing out of position. Atlanta fans “PLEASE LISTEN TO ME AND UNDERSTAND THAT IT IS NOT ABOUT HOW MANY GAMES YOU WIN IN THE REGULAR SEASON, IT IS ABOUT HOW CAN YOUR TEAM MATCH UP WITH EVERYBODY”. Al Horford needs to be at Power Foward. I wish they could get Tyson Chandler but he committed to Charlotte.
Trade: Marvin Williams, Josh Smith, and Mike Bibby—–for Chris Paul
and then bring Josh Childress back and if we can’t get Shaq then just plug a big body in like Kwame Brown (who is 6′11, 270 lbs and guard Dwight Howard in a descent fashion).
C – Kwame Brown / Zaza
PF- Horford / Joe Smith
SF- J. Childress / P. Sy
SG- Joe Johnson / J. Crawford / Crawford (rookie)
PG- Chris Paul / J. Teague

northcyde yes it is time to move on from the hurt feelings. i hope jj backs it up on the court and has a running mate that allows him to post up. that is the big question as to who can pull it off. the best we can do is sign and trade chills for something get shaq and sign jordan farmar. i would go to battle with that.

Who are the big 3 in the East. Cleveland has dominated the East during the regular season the last 2yrs with 66 and 61 wins, but without LeBron, they’re toast. Boston had an outstanding season, but they’re a yr older, KPerkins is injured, RWallace will likely retire and RAllen might go elsewhere. We also dominated them last yr.
With us returning the same 8 core of players, getting more consistency and OFF/DEF production out of our SF and PG positions, adding actual OFF and DEF systems, committing to playing uptempo, utilizing the talent on our bench, and making adjustments and changes when needed, will definitely solidify our position as one of the big 3 in the East.
Miami looks good on paper, as far as their top 3 players are concerned, but they’ll have to prove on the court they can come together and get the job done. At this point, the only team standing in our way in the East is Orlando. And attacking them with an actual OFF/DEF system and philosophy, and having a HC that’s not afraid to use strategy and make adjustments or changes will make us a much more formidable opponent, if not propel us past them.

doc…can’t sign shaq & farmar unless one takes the bi-annual or less.
our options for improving the team are signing with MLE (starting salary of up to $5.8M), signing with bi-annual (starting salary of roughy $2M+), veteran minimum signings, signing Josh Childress, and trades.

Lame Horse!
CP3 is Speedy Claxton – until I see him play again. He never returned in that 6 to 8 weeks he was scheduled for after having a COMPLETE removal of one of his meniscus.
What part about that don’t you understand?
IF he were a horse? He would have been put-down already.
I hope he recovers close to 100%. I really do, he is very nice. But, until I see him return to HIS game level?
I wouldn’t trade my ham sandwich for him and, I don’t even eat ham. I would take Greg Oden over CP3, at least he has ALL his body parts, even IF from what I heard – one of them is relatively small compared to his shoe size.

I-AM-SOULSTAR-thanks for the update. I still think the Atlanta Hawks and the Orlando Magic as the 2 TEAMS to beat in the East. Something tells me that Sund and the ASG are quiet on the FA front because they’re more interested in trading for the Center we want than just signing a FA.
If we sign a FA center outright, it eats up our cap and/or puts us in the luxury tax bracket. But, if we trade for one, we end up basically exchanging salaries. Trading for a center allows us to maintain cap space to sign or resign another important player. I’d much rather trade for a center like Przybilla or Okafor, and use our cap space to sign JChildress, and/or a FA like MBarnes or RBell, than go into luxury tax territory just to sign Shaq.
If we could trade for a center, convince Childress to return, then sign a combo guard like SLivingston, we’d be able to give Orlando all they can handle, and then some.

J Smooth can’t shoot and he would have to play Small Foward. You are dog-on right I like J. Childress over Josh Smith. If it gives us Chris Paul then why not make that move. Chris Paul is a player who will make that whole team better. Then check this out we play Miami Heat at least 5 times so who would not want to see the Hawks vs. Heat game. I am sure ESPN will put that on their top games to see list.

Ken Strickland,
You are right on! I would like to get Shaq through a S&T with the Cavs. Maybe send them Marvin for Shaq. I also would like to keep Childress, but if he won’t agree, then see if the Wizzards would send McGee in a S&T. That would leave the MLE to get Matt Barnes and the bi-annual to get Shaun Livingston and still stay away from the luxury tax.
If we can add Shaq, Barnes, McGee, and Livingston and only lose Marvin and maybe Evans in the Shaq deal, the Hawks could win the East next year!

and for (jeff)—– I know more than the Hawks front office who gave Joe Johnson the max but now as a Hawks fan I have to move on and react. Then Marvin Williams, yeah it is not his fault but if I can get him off my roster I would be thrilled! I am just a true Hawks fan that speaks the truth. If Josh Smith is that great why does everyone boo him when he shoots an air ball or when he thinks he is a point guard and get the ball stolen on a fast break. He can block shots but he is not a center–REMEMBER THAT!

I-A-SOULSTAR-I totally agree. I believe Sund and the ASG’s approach all along was to keep the core intact, hire a HC that’s willing and able to utilize the talent on his bench, then spend the money necessary to add talent to the bench.
Everyone blames Sund for resigning Bibby, Marvin and Zaza, but it was Woodson’s call. Sund gave him exactly what he said he wanted, so he could be given a fair evaluation on getting it done. Woodson obviously wanted Marvin and Bibby, since he insisted on playing them no matter how inconsistent and limited their production was. The Hawks under LDrew will win with speed, quickness, depth, ball movement, DEF, and overall team play.
There will be some growing pains from learning a entirely new OFF/DEF concept and philosophy and overcoming some old ingrained habits. But once everyone is on the same page, and their confidence level is high, they will take off.

I think CP3 may benefit tremendously from Micro-Fracture Surgery, based on what Doc told me.
IDK why CP3 didn’t have that done already, because he will need an entire season to recover, maybe longer.

If we have the same core players and the continue the same style we played last year, then no we can’t win, but has anybody thought of this? Instead of changing the parts you just change the process. There was this Depot in Texarkana,TX that was about to shut down because they were so unorganized, but you know what instead of firing the guys on the assembly line they got a new guy who can show them the process called Lean Six Sigma and now this same Depot has received numerous honors.
What am I trying to say? I’m saying maybe Larry Drew presents this “Lean Six Sigma” if you will, and changes the way this team plays together. Think about it, even with all this hidden turmoil the team still won 53 games. Of course it doesn’t hurt to add new parts yes but lets see if the change of style works first and if it doesn’t then lets make some changes to the core of the team.
We’ve seen flashes of each of our core guys. This lets me know that there is something there, now I would rather see that come out here as opposed to sending them to another team. Marvin has shown he can score, but did anybody remember in the playoff game against the Bucks where we could’ve taken a 3-2 lead, Mike Woodson pulls out a hot Marvin Williams and keeps him on the bench until it’s too late.

I see the Hawks as being a very good team for years to come, but I am finding it very difficult to see how the Hawks will get “over the hump”, with the Hawks “hump” being making it to the Eastern Conference finals with a legit shot of making it to the finals and competing for a championship.
This core is good. I really like them. I am glad to see JJ back. I wouldn’t trade Smith or Horford for anything short of a certified super star. I think Bibby still has a lot to offer, especially if Teague takes off and Bibby fits into his role as a quality veteran back-up who can give the Hawks quality minutes off the bench while being somewhat of a mentor to the younger Teague. I think a lot of us sell Marvin short just because he has fallen short of our expectations. Yes, he hasn’t lived up to being a #2 draft pick, but he is still a solid player. I really like Crawford, too. And like most Hawk fans, I love ZaZa. We all know ZaZa isn’t great, but he always brings energy off the bench and always gives you a fight. I think the fans and players respect that.
However, as good as this core is, it is clear that they are not quite good enough. With the salary cap restrictions (and the financial difficulties of “going into the luxury cap”), it’s hard to see how this Hawks team improves enough. Sure, if the Hawks can use the MLE to pick up a quality center and then use the bi-annual to pick up a great perimiter defender (another pg? or another sf?), the Hawks have made the improvements where necessary, but will these improvements be enough?
In order for this Hawks team to have a chance of “getting over the hump,” ALL of our current players must have career years (or the best kinda year we can expect them to have given where they are at in their career) and we must make two quality FA signings. This means Horford and Smith need to continue to noticeably improve. Marvin needs to have a stand out year. Teague needs to be able to show that he is one of the top young point guards in the league. Joe must have the best season of his career. And everyone else needs to be able to maximize their roles to the fullest. This would take a true alignment of the stars.
Or, the Hawks could break up part of their “core” and hope to steal a diamond in the rough or two. I guess, if the Hawks were to trade anybody, Bibby, Williams, and Evans would make the most sense. (Again, this is assuming that Horford and Smith are off limits for any deal that would be short of bringing a certified super star to Phillips.) But to where and for whom? I know there has a been a lot of crazy (and a few not-so-crazy) trade scenarios thrown around, but who can the Hawks realistically target that would (1) instantly make the team better and (2) we could get for a steal. (Think of someone like Crawford who is obviously good, but who is also discontent where they are at, and their team is equally discontent with them.) Again, pulling off two spectacular steals (ahem, I mean “trades”) would take a true alignment of the stars. It seems like it’s only once every so many years that a team can pull off a deal like we did with Crawford last year. Now we are in a position where we need to pull of two such deals to really get us to a championship caliber team.
The Hawks are almost there … but will they ever actually be “there”?
Oh, and what about this Childress guy? Any chances he will be playing as a Hawk next year? Any chances the Hawks can get something for him in a S&T or something along those lines? I am kind of thinking that neither of these are that likely, but maybe …
Hopefully, the stars will align and the Hawks will make a serious championship run this year. Either way, though, I look forward to another great year.

Finally, Mark Bradley returns, dumber than ever…
The Heat just signed the three of the four best players in the NBA and he says they arent better than the Hawks. Give me a break, the Hawks barely made it outta the 1st rd. twice in two years and were swept both years consecutively.
And what did they do to get better? Absolutely nothing. They return as they left: undersized and overmatched. The spunky lil’ group will beat up on all the below .500 teams at home and split on the road and barely make the playoffs once again. But another 2nd rd. exit is inevitable. I guess progress would be not getting swept.
Well, that’s something, I guess…but how do you go over the cap and near luxury tax without one additional player, other than a late round draft pick? Even though Jordan Crawford will be a dynamic player, it’s the lack of size, rebounding and toughness that’s getting us swept two years in a row, not the lack of wingmen. So, instead of getting one of the several 7fters available, we get another wing, then lolly-gag until all the free agent BIGs worth a hoot are gone.
And the icing on the cake? They don’t even have enough money to get a 7′3 behemoth at the MLE b/c Josh Childress could sign his offer sheet any day and they would have to pay luxury tax. So, they are basically going to wind up paying luxury tax and all they have to show for it is the exact same swept squad as last year and two extra wings at the position that you just overpaid $20M dollars for?
Unbelievable, only in ATL. Not to mention Miami gives away #2 pick Michael Beasley for a second rd. pick and we couldnt even get in on that action either.
Where’s Billy Knight, this thing has gone full circle. He told those guys to fire Mike Woodson and they wouldn’t, but a year later, after another embarrassing second rd. sweep, they fire they guy. So, doesn’t that mean he was right in the first place? We probably couldve saved ourselves a boat load of embarrassment and cap space.
We’re not looking real smart right now, but at least we’re not Cleveland or New Jersey.

Some folks need to get a clue. Gilbert said this AFTER Lebron left them hanging and couldn’t win a championship with Shaq, the Coach of the Year, Jamison, Parker, Moon, Varejao, Mo Williams, etc.
