Atlanta Hawks: J.J. squeezed out of the big summit?

Who's missing from this picture? (slamdunkcentral.com)

Who's missing from this picture? (slamdunkcentral.com)

ESPN.com reported there was a free-agent summit in Miami over the weekend involving LeBron, D-Wade and Bosh.

Other reports say the meeting didn’t happen and others that say it couldn’t have happened because James was in New York and Wade was in Las Vegas and Chicago over the weekend.

Now I’m watching ESPN respond to those reports by saying that the three players did too meet in Miami!

All of this comes after Stephen A. Smith reported that James and Bosh would join Wade in Miami.

It’s all very confusing. But if there was a meeting in some city somewhere, and if James and Bosh really are considering headed to Miami to play with D-Wade (it seems to be a real possibility), the one thing missing from all of this is Joe Johnson.

Remember, Wade had said J.J. would be included in the summit and now it turns out he wasn’t invited (if in fact there was a meeting). What that would mean for J.J. is that he’s not included in this free agent master plan orchestrated by LeBron and Wade.

What it means for the Hawks is if those three guys really do end up on the same team, that would leave more teams with top-tier cap space than there are top-tier free agents. If the Hawks really are hoping to avoid offering J.J. the Bird max salary of about $119 million, and there has been some resistance to doing so, then this is not the scenario they’d want to see (and that’s not even considering what it would mean for the balance of power in the Eastern Conference).

Of course, all of this is assuming there really was a meeting, and the Big Three free agents really would play for the same team. It’s not even Thursday yet and it’s hard to know what’s true.

From the Augusta Chronicle about Garret Siler…

Siler said there are two NBA teams — Atlanta and Miami — with high interest in him. He said he likes the signing of Hawks assistant Larry Drew, who succeeded former head coach Mike Woodson earlier this month.

“He’s a real good guy,” Siler said, calling Drew a disciplinarian. “He’s one of those guys who really liked my character.”

Siler said there’s no front-runner between Atlanta and Miami. He and his agent are working to get a contract from one of the teams.

In the NBA Draft earlier this month, Miami selected a center in the second round; the Hawks did not. Also, the Heat are rumored to be in the running to land free agent forwards LeBron James and Chris Bosh and to re-sign guard Dwyane Wade. Siler said he can’t concern himself with what Atlanta and Miami are doing in the off-season.

“I’m just going to worry about kicking butt in the Summer League,” he said.

FIRE RICK SUND… Wash picks up 7ft pick and pop guy YI from the Nets for nothing and yet the Hawks sit around twiddling their thumbs instead of making a serious run at constructing a roster of guys who do different things… Oh i get it lets keep letting Josh shoot jumpers and AL playing with his back to the basket against guys who are waay bigger and stronger than him… that makes sense

Sund who has a nasty history of hiring losers as coaches, has went on record as saying that although Horford is a powerforward he believe you can win a championship with the powerforward masquerading as a center. Im quite sure we could have had quite a few centers by now, but Sund-of-a-byttch is not interested in us getting a center (I holla atcha JJ). Thats why he passed on centers in the draft.. He is doing this Sund way, and Woodson was fired because he would not do it sunds way. Sund has never won a championship but has finished is last place multiple times. My question is

how does this idiot keep finding work?

Smoove is better than Horford. I’d wait til next season to decide to trade one (probably wouldn’t trade either even then).

1. Hawks’ Center situation: This is an all or nothing situation. People cannot say that Horford is a true starting center then turn around and say we need to bring in another center to come off the bench. Last I checked, Horford wasn’t too bad with fouls so why do we need to invest in a center coming off the bench when we’d expect Horford to log some serious minutes as a young starting center? It doesn’t make any sense. I’ll tell you what does make sense; the Hawks need a defensive specialist at center and that person needs to log some meaningful minutes (i.e. be a starter on the floor at the same time as Horford).

2. After the FA smoke settles, we need to get back to the business of figuring out what the heck is the goal of the ASG. Are they in this to win an NBA championship and stay around as owners for the long haul or are they truely looking to dump the franchise? I don’t understand how after all these years of “too many chiefs who are all too broke” they could be looking for even more investors to add to the mess. Why not sell the Hawks to David McDavid now? Doesn’t dude have an extra $381 million coming his way from the lawsuit? He should be able to afford the Hawks and Phillips straight up by now. Just saying…

SAUTEE-It’s obvious you’re getting a big kick out of following up on TRUTH SERUM constantly putting his foot in his mouth and trying to sound intelligent, especially when it comes to basketball. His approach seems to be to throw mud against the wall and hope some of it sticks, and that others on these blogs are as clueless as he obviously is, as evidence by his never ending contradictions, misrepresentations and/or out right lies.

OBRIEN-I honestly think this yrs Hawks team, under HC LDrew’s direction, will be just as good without JJU, if not better, than they were last yr with him under Woodson. How can anyone that knows anything about basketball believe an OFF that relies on ISO’s, jump shooting and having 4 players clear out and stand around while one player dominates the ball attacking the DEF, is better than one that relies on ball movement and has 4-5 players in motion attacking the DEF.

How can anyone that knows anything about basketball think a slow, nonathletic, one dimensional jump shooting PG that plays no DEF and doesn’t penetrate or create easy scoring opportunities for others, is better than a young, quick, fast, athletic PG that can penetrate and create easy scoring opportunities for others, who also plays solid DEF?

What if we consistently get more production from our SF position, as well as our bench? If we improve our overall production in all other areas(PF, C, PG, SF), we can replace most of what JJ provided by approaching everything from a team perspective, rather than consistently relying on the production of one or two players, and a single minded OFF approach.

YEA THATS A GOOD ONE. EITHER BIBBY’ S MAN IS NOW IN THE PAINT AT THE BASKET AND HORFORD IS (IM LAUGHING) PLAYING DEFENSE OR HORFORD HAS RAN AWAY FROM HIS RESPONSIBILITIES AND IS ON THE WINGS. EITHER WAY THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR HORFORDS LACK OF DEFENSIVE SKILLS.

O'Brien

June 30th, 2010
12:40 pm

Truth,

I agree that the Hawks need to step up their defense. But Horford is only a part of it. We also need better defense from our guards. Bibby let guys get by him very easily on the perimeter, putting more pressure on our bigs, because now they also have to worry about somebody else’s man.

Also, because we switched all the time, sometime Horford would end up a PG, and what is he supposed to do? Horford just isnt quick enough to keep up with guards.

My plan for JJ. Offer Joe 6 years at $108 mil or so. Give Larry Drew one year to see what he can do with this team. If its not working out, then next year they can decide who to trade (Joe, Josh, Marvin, ZaZa). Plus Bibby will be an expiring contract.

Also, next offseason, Carmelo and Chauncey might be the 2 biggest free agents, so Joe will have a market (both in free agency and sign and trades). Plus a team that loses out this offseason might save the cap room for next year anyway.

I say keep Joe, get somebody to help Horford down low, get another SF, and see what happens (even if we have to trade Jamal).

You blog on here like you know something, when you don’t know squat. Everyone showed you how ignorant your comments were about JJ and the sign and trade (getting him more money) and now you state: “There’s no guarantee that a team will trade for JJ if the Hawks sign him to a max deal. Then the Hawks will be on the hook for 6 years”

All the papers are signed at the same time. The Hawks would only sign him to that if they already had a trade lined up. Geez.

And then you comment about how stupid the Hawks were to draft a “project center” in the second round. HELLO? Anybody home? They traded him that night for cash considerations. DUH.

Seriously, learn what you’re talking about or stay off the board.

We arent far apart in philosophy. I think are mistaken about the times Horford ended up on a guard during a switch. The Opposition coach actually planned it that way. Many coaches plan to isolate Horford on quick small guards because of Horfords lack of defense. This was by design and a weakness in our defense.

You and i agree that Bibby can be a liability defensively but where we part is I dont think bibby’s role is that great. Hes in the last year of his contract if Im not mistaken and will probably retire. This was part of what the thinking was when he was brought here. Bibby is not a major piece of this team any more. Hes still has a high basketball I Q but his impact days are over. Hes now a role and bit player. We are wasting time talking about him.

“There’s no guarantee that a team will trade for JJ if the Hawks sign him to a max deal. ”

That’s not how sign-and-trades work. In a sign-and-trade, a player signs a contract explicitly saying he will be traded within 48 hours of signing. It’s not like the Hawks would sign him to a mX deal and then look around for trade partners. The trade partner would be finalized before the deal is done.

Najeh,

He is not losing $28 mil by taking a 5 year deal. The difference for the first 5 years is probably between $5 – $10 mil. At the end of the fifth year, he would sign another contract. So in reality, he would probably lose $15 mil or so over 6 years.

I know thats still a lot of money, but if he wins a championship, he makes some of that money back IMO. And playing in Chicago makes him more marketable.

and go ask Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, Patrick Ewing etc if they would trade $15 – $20 mil for a ring.
