Who's missing from this picture? (slamdunkcentral.com)
ESPN.com reported there was a free-agent summit in Miami over the weekend involving LeBron, D-Wade and Bosh.
Other reports say the meeting didn’t happen and others that say it couldn’t have happened because James was in New York and Wade was in Las Vegas and Chicago over the weekend.
Now I’m watching ESPN respond to those reports by saying that the three players did too meet in Miami!
All of this comes after Stephen A. Smith reported that James and Bosh would join Wade in Miami.
It’s all very confusing. But if there was a meeting in some city somewhere, and if James and Bosh really are considering headed to Miami to play with D-Wade (it seems to be a real possibility), the one thing missing from all of this is Joe Johnson.
Remember, Wade had said J.J. would be included in the summit and now it turns out he wasn’t invited (if in fact there was a meeting). What that would mean for J.J. is that he’s not included in this free agent master plan orchestrated by LeBron and Wade.
What it means for the Hawks is if those three guys really do end up on the same team, that would leave more teams with top-tier cap space than there are top-tier free agents. If the Hawks really are hoping to avoid offering J.J. the Bird max salary of about $119 million, and there has been some resistance to doing so, then this is not the scenario they’d want to see (and that’s not even considering what it would mean for the balance of power in the Eastern Conference).
Of course, all of this is assuming there really was a meeting, and the Big Three free agents really would play for the same team. It’s not even Thursday yet and it’s hard to know what’s true.

Why is it so hard to understand that the ball is in Joe’s court? Plenty of teams want him (are we surprised?) and if he wants out, he’ll get OUT.
Trading him should be about getting something back, as opposed to nothing, when he decides he wants to be elsewhere.
If he is cool with staying, then give him his contract. We all know that’s how it’s going to go down anyway, if he stays.
Let’s just hope that Larry Drew can help him back to being what he needs to be.
What Joe needs is to be the type of guy he was in Phoenix. You know, the guy shooting 46% from the field and 47% from the arc. The guy catching and shooting. The guy destroying people one on one, instead of dribbling the ball for 15 or more seconds, then hoisting a shot that should only belong in a game or H-O-R-S-E. If Drew can help that happen, then we’ll see Joe return to Phoenix form. Maybe even ‘06-’07 form (25 ppg, 47% FG).
I’d like that.

Truth Serum,
Actually, I think the impact free agents don’t want to be here because this ownership group isn’t known for spending large gobs of money, outside of Joe Johnson. As for a center, we would have to settle for a “decent” traditionally-sized center. If we’re keeping Joe, we’d have to trade Josh, as his value (and contract value) will be the best trading chip. Trading Horford won’t get us anywhere, as he only makes about $4 million or so, and we’d have to give up probably another starter for a good starting center.
And I mean a GOOD one. We can’t get anywhere with a traditional center unless said center is good enough to hang on the same level as Dwight Howard, Yao Ming, and the other top centers in the League. Otherwise, waste of money.
If Sund and the ASG get their act together, they might end up with a Brendan Haywood. Everybody else is hanging onto big men that are worth something. Those that get traded are either not as good as you think, or the team on the other side of the trade is giving up some serious talent. Prime example is Samuel Dalembert. The guy blocks all the shots in the world, but he has some issues. That’s why his a$$ got traded for Spencer freakin’ Hawes and Andres “I haven’t met a shot I don’t like” Noccioni, LOL….

“Maybe even ‘06-’07 form (25 ppg, 47% FG). ”
For that to happen, he needs to start driving to the hoop and getting fouled like he did that year, when he averaged 5.5 FT attempts per game (a career high).
Ideally, he should average about 7.
The inability to draw fouls, more than anything else, is what separates Joe from the elite swingmen in the league.

Its nice to see you not get emotionally discharge when a comment in made about the hawks need to upgrade the 5 spot.
I think you have a valid argument when you talk about trade scenario’s, however, I dont agree with you position that any center who’s worth having is being kept by the team. I dont think sund is has enough basketball intelligence or business savvy to make the Hawks (or any team for that matter) a front line team capable of winning it all. I know you like to blame ASG for S.U.N D. but the bottom line is we arent going any where JJ or not with out a center. Trades have been and can be made. I tired of hearing the cop-outs for why we did not make an EFFORT to get this center or that center so we are better there for with out ANY CENTER.
This is wheel and deal season. Either we have a player in the GM position or we dont. No excuses or cop outs. Team will be passing us base on there draft and free agent acquisitions. Like it or not Woodson got us to 3rd seed and 53 so the bar has been set. Its time to Rise Up!

Truth Serum,
The Horford comment that stands out to me, was when he said “he needs help down low”. That should speak loud and clear to Rick Sund, because Horford is the guy next in line for a big contract. So when his deal comes up, he could be tempted by a team that will pay him the max AND let him play PF.
Ray,
I disagree. I think if we’re keeping Joe, we need to trade Jamal. Jamal is an expiring contract, and do we really want to be in a position where he can walk away next year and we get nothing in return?
Also, if we have a third team all NBA SG, I dont want our best bench player and SMOY to also play SG. Especially when Mo Evans and Jordan Crawford can do decent jobs at backup. Our bench is too reliable on one guy. Trade Jamal for a big is my opinion.

Until Al starts scoring 20 points per game, he’s not getting a max deal from anyone. Right now, he’d be in line for a deal similar to what Josh got.

the ball is in in the hands of Sund and ASG first, they have to show the commitment. then the decision would be on Joe.. dribble or shoot.
is it not correct to assume that the only way Joe considers a return if he is offered max with that 6th year.. if that doesnt happen, he never got the ball..

Last I looked, you really couldn’t gauge how a person is really feeling just by observing what they type, LOL!
On a more serious note, the ASG hired Sund, so what do you want me to say?
As far as acquiring a center to your liking, how can you say that deals can be done, there are no excuses? Yes, deals can be done, but it’s not as simple as picking up the phone and saying “hey, give me your starting-caliber center, and I’ll give you what I feel like giving you.” I understand that there’s no excuse for a lack of effort. What are your ideas as far as acquiring such a player? Who should we go after, and how should we get him? What details will be involved? Curious on your thoughts.
I’ll give you one of mine: If Memphis were willing to do it, I’d be okay with trading Horford for Marc Gasol. Maybe they’d be okay with it since Horford is more athletic and if they want a tall shot-blocker to play some minutes at the 5, they could use Hasheem Thabeet. Gasol is a legit starting center who put up almost identical stats as Horford (oddly enough). He’s 7′1″ and 260 lbs.
Or, I’d trade Josh Smith to Golden State for Andris Biedrins and Azubuike (or however you spell his damn name). Biedrins is a legit double double center who stands about 6′11″/ 7′0″ and about 245 lbs.
What are your scenarios?

I disagree. Joe is a somewhat hot commodity. If he doesn’t want to be here, then any amount of money/committment won’t be sufficient. He’s not hurting for suitors, as we can see. Didn’t the Hawks offer him a contract that he turned down already? It was a formality, and it was the most they could offer at the time (it would have been an extension), but it was an offer. Is that not a committment?
is it not correct to assume that the only way Joe considers a return if he is offered max with that 6th year
Okay, I hear you on that. But the media is reporting exactly that in some circles. And Joe turning down the extension offer is supposed to make us assume….what? I think we all know why he turned it down. Because waiting until his current contract expires was more lucrative. The offered extension had a limit – 4 years. He turned it down so he could wait until a 5 year or 6 year deal would be available. So maybe assuming that he’d prefer a six year deal isn’t so far-fetched. Any way, it’s not MY assumption. It’s what is being reported. Look at MC’s article, it’s right there.

I would trade Jamal Crawford and another piece for Tyson Chandler. Unfortunately, I dont think Charlotte would go for it because they already have Stephen Jackson.
I also liked Najeh’s proposal. Crawford and draft pick to Portland for Pryzbilla and Rudy Fernandez.

Nobody can offer Joe anything for the next 23 hours. I’m guessing Sund and Co. will be in L.A. by then, if they aren’t already.
But hey, I wrote about urgency on the part of the Hawks in the Fan Blog prior to the most recent one. It’s what the entire blog post was about. Hawks gotta move fast, even if Joe wants out, whether it’s orchestrating a palatable S&T, or simply figuring out how to spend the $$ money left over from his absence (and I think a trade or two would also be necessary by then).

i think we are saying the same thing.. so im not sure if i see your contention..
my point is there is no way Joe returns to the Hawks if they either fail to act quickly on a max deal or do not offer the max check..
so at this stage in the game its not up to Joe yet. it was when they offered him an extension months ago, but he did what we all would do. the Hawks knew what time it was when that took place. so either they feel Joe is their guy and put the check where their mouth is or they dont.. @ that point Joe has to decide if Atlanta is where he wants to be.

I hear you. All I’m saying is there’s a possibility Joe wants to go, max contract or not. He wanted to leave Phoenix when he came here, and he asked them to not bother matching any offer that was coming his way. Yeah the Hawks have to make an offer at 12:01 a.m. Thursday morning. No doubt.
But I think it’s irresponsible to think that a max contract is all it takes to get him to stay. Ask Toronto, whose GM (Colangelo) is now publicly quoted as saying Bosh is likely gone from the Raptors come July 1st. I bet they were/are planning on offering a max contract as well….

I see where you are with this Ray. I agree with you on principle. I like the Gasol traded but Im not looking for a double double as a measuring stick. There were 62 players who had 10 or more games with that stat. 10 points and 10 rebound is all it takes.
I again would like to see a physical presence in the middle who can block and alter shots there by forcing the other team to become a jump shooting team. Its not just about Howard. Its about competing at the highest level which means we HAVE to be strong at the rack. I dont think we need a great scorer at the 5 as much as we need a stopper. Would love it to have a Dekimbe Mutombo type.
I will just leave it like this. Believe it or or not. Bynum can be had, Amare(about as good a defender as Al but his offense would change the dynamics of the game.)

Truth Serum ,
Amare can be had for max money, but he won’t play the 5 (he refuses). It’s why Phoenix traded for Shaq. It’s why they tried Brian Skinner and Kurt Thomas before that. It’s why the went and got Channing Frye, but they ended up playing Robin Lopez at the 5 (Brook Lopez’s less talented twin brother).
Haywood is definitely available, and I want Sund to sign his butt this offseason, regardless of what happens with Joe Johnson. I think Pryzbilla can be had in trade, now that Camby is in Portland. Then again, that might not be the case if Portland gets nervous about Oden and his injury-prone self. If he could stay healthy, the balance of power in the West would have already shifted. He’s bigger than Dwight Howard, if you know what I’m sayin’.
New Jersey is not giving up Brook Lopez. That would be stupid on their part. I don’t think their new Russian billionaire owner would go for that, nor would Avery Johnson. They drafted him as a lottery pick for one thing. For another, it won’t be long before he’s making the all-star team every year if he continues to progress, and his team can actually win some games.
I don’t know what it would take to get Andrew Bynum, but doing business with the Lakers could be quite costly. I don’t see him going anywhere. Why leave for the Hawks when you can play with the NBA champs?
Perkins probably won’t go anywhere anytime soon. Without him Boston has no center at all. And they need him to deal with Dwight in the East (Brook Lopez and Al Horford, too).
I’d like to add Javale McGee. I think he can be had, the Wiz are enamored of Andray Blatche anyway, meaning McGee may not get many minutes in Washington. I’d take him quick, offering Marvin or somebody.
Okafor can be had too, the Hornets want to get rid of him and his contract. But what would it cost us? He’s a stopper, but he’s no bigger than Al. Still, that’s all you want him for: blocked shots and rebounds. And some dunks.
Dalembert can be had too, and we saw that when Philly traded him. But I think Sacramento actually wants him for the same reason we’d want him. He’s probably not available unless we overpay in trade.
I’d LOVE to have Joakim Noah, but I think Chicago only parts with him if it nets them a superstar like Lebron James or somebody. They really like him up there, and I don’t blame them. That, and if he’s gone, their only real center is Brad Miller, who happens to be a 34 year old free agent that might get you about 25 blocks all season long.
Roy Hibbert? Roy Hibbert! Now I KNOW you playin’ with me. The same Roy Hibbert that Al Horford destroyed each time we played the Pacers? Nah, man. Indy can keep Roy. He’s big, but he’s softer than Charmin toilet paper.
The reason why I mentioned double doubles is because I would want something like that from my starting center. Maybe the points don’t mean as much, but the rebounds do. I don’t want a center who blocks shots but can’t rebound. That’s all I’m saying there. I think our best bets are Haywood, McGee, Pryzbilla, and maybe Okafor. They would all fit, though Okafor is a guy who probably has to start or he might catch an attitude.

Seems this would be a motivator. JJ not invited but Bosh invited means the open market is not red hot for JJ. It also reminds us how under productive Hewitt is to have burn through two talents and have so little to show for it. It is not that Hewitt can’t coach the big man, it is he can’t get point guards to run an offense. LeBron, and D-Wade can run an offense and score, though it would be interesting to see their egos on the same team. JJ and Bosh are more post up men and certainly not setting up a table on the offense.

GT . . your post makes no sense whatsoever.
The reason why Bosh was invited, is because Bosh is a BIG. Ideally, a perimeter player like Lebron or Wade would rather be paired up with a scoring big, than with another scoring wing like JJ. But if they couldn’t play with a big, JJ would be their obvious running mate.
LOL @ the market isn’t red hot for JJ, yet he’s been the talk of the media for the last 3 – 5 days.
There’s a reason why just about every other team outside of Miami is knocking on JJ’s door these days. A lot of those teams either desperately need a high scoring guard, or a guy to compliment the big that they already have there.
This is why Mark Cuban is all over JJ right now. He can’t get Lebron or Wade, and with Dirk in the mix, he really has no use for Bosh or Boozer. JJ is even a higher priority than Amare in Dallas, because Dirk plays the 4, and they can use a high caliber 2 to play with Dirk.
People talk like Bosh is this superstar that carried his team to great heights. LOL . . Bosh has done no more than JJ, heck . . even less than JJ.

FIRE RICK SUND… Wash picks up 7ft pick and pop guy YI from the Nets for nothing and yet the Hawks sit around twiddling their thumbs instead of making a serious run at constructing a roster of guys who do different things… Oh i get it lets keep letting Josh shoot jumpers and AL playing with his back to the basket against guys who are waay bigger and stronger than him… that makes sense
