ESPN.com’s Chris Broussard says the Knicks will meet with J.J. in Los Angeles soon after free agency opens at midnight Thursday.
That’s no surprise since New York is one of a handful of teams with the cap space to offer J.J. a max deal and it’s always been speculated J.J. would look at the Knicks because of his his strong relationship with coach Mike D’Antoni from their Phoenix days. Until now I’d always heard New York wasn’t very interested in Johnson, but apparently that’s not the case. Broussard says the Knicks think J.J. can sell LeBron on teaming up in New York, which seems to be kind of a backwards arrangement.
The most interesting part of Broussard’s story is that he reports Johnson is willing to take less money from the Knicks, who can’t pay him as much as the Hawks due to salary-cap rules. According to Broussard, J.J. believes he can make up the roughly $25 million difference through endorsements and stock shares in Madison Square Garden. (Edit: I’m pretty sure paying a guy in stock options would be against NBA rules because it is a circumvention of the salary cap. Edit2: A helpful reader emailed to point out the league has already addressed this specific situation.) If the Hawks resign themselves to J.J.’s departure, he could get the $25 million and they could get an asset through a sign-and-trade.
Don’t ask me about the stocks, but J.J. hasn’t been a very marketable player, nor has he been very enthusiastic about marketing himself. Not sure how much that changes even playing in New York, especially if he’s on a team with either LeBron or Amare. And I’m still waiting to see all these older free agents willing to forsake $20-30 million in salary just so they can be more famous, play on a better team, bring in extra endorsements, live in a better city or whatever.
In any event, J.J. taking less money to play elsewhere is the scenario most feared by Atlanta . Rumblings that J.J. may be willing to do just that before free agency has already begun will only increase the Hawks’ nervousness about his departure. Getting the word out there certainly gives J.J. more leverage with the Hawks, who at some point may have to decide if they will give J.J. a six-year, maximum-level salary.
I wouldn’t think J.J. would be a New York kind of guy–if he thinks he got it bad here after fading in the playoffs, wait until he’s the goat in that city. I’ve always thought the Bulls would be J.J.’s most likely destination if he left Atlanta. Just a couple days ago K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune reported that J.J. was ready to make an early commitment to the Bulls.
But then Jonathan Abrams wrote in the New York Times that the Bulls are the favorites to land LeBron and Bosh, which would not leave money for J.J. Then again, maybe Bosh really is headed for Miami and then J.J. and LeBron can team up in Chicago.
Already you can see how free agency is going to be a pretty silly season.

Truth-serum,
How long are going to whine about Woodson?
He’s GONE, man, get a grip. Didn’t you once complain about Ray using “old” stats. saying that you only cared about NOW and the future?
It’s NOW and Woodson was THEN. Let it go.
And all I have to say about Horford is, once again, if he has “peaked” at age 24 (yeah, right), then at least he “peaked” at an All-Star level.
I’d take him as a perennial All-Star Center for the rest of his career. Gladly.
And I’m glad to see that you agree with his perennial All-Star status. Heh heh.
I’ll also say that when you try to denigrate Rick Sund, or Al Horford with cursing and lewd suggestions, that you diminish yourself in ways that you don’t seem to comprehend.
But you are diminished still, even if you don’t recognize it.

We need to go after Tyson Chandler for center and SF/PF positions Travis Outlaw. And if Joe leaves we gotta get Rudy Gaye no one else out of the pool of players we can afford will make us better! With these players we can compete on a championship level! MC have you heard any info on the summer league roster yet? Thanks

I just read an article that detailed the Hawks salary cap situation and what created the situation. It said we are better off offering JJ a max contract to resign than letting him go, because we don’t have the cap space to sign a FA replacement.
It also said if we hadn’t resigned MBibby, and held onto SClaxton and ALaw’s expiring contracts, instead of trading for JCrawford, we’d be sitting on close to 19 million under the cap. The other reason we have little to no cap space is because of the current cap holds we have on JJ, JChildress and MWest. Basically, our current situation is the result of Woodson refusing to play ALaw, and his insistence on resigning MBibby, as well as his insistence on having a veteran SG, which prompted the trade of ALaw and SClaxton for JCrawford.
This entire scenario means we can:
1-resign Chills and/or JJ,
2-do a sign and trade either or both,
3-lose JJ to FA for nothing,
4-continue our cap hold on Childress and have limited cap space,
4-renounce Childress and gain some cap space, but probably not enough to sign a comparable player.
Until Crawford and MEvans’ contracts come off the books next yr, and we can possibly trade Bibby’s expiring contract, other than our MLE, we’ll only be able to sign players like RMorris, who’s salary was about the same as the amount of cap hold the NBA adds to a teams cap for unfilled roster spots.

Oh yes, all of you Rudy Gay fans can give it a rest and forget about us acquiring him, since he’s a restricted FA and we don’t have the cap space to even offer him a contract. The only way we’re going to get any quality players is by a straight out trade, using our MLE, or a sign and trade. Otherwise, those of you who insist on suggesting we sign players like Rudy Gay, TChandler and JSalmons etc, or any player that wants more than our MLE.

Great Job on explaining the Hawks “Cap & Trade” situation! I hope that helps all the Blog – GM’s in their
quests to throw away JJ and sign all their fantasy players. This probably won’t help the
ones that don’t won’t to be helped.
They will just keep making ignorant statements – all the while calling the real GM an idiot.
But, without Woodson to chew on, Sund is next in line and when the season starts it will
be Drews turn at the whipping – post!
But, you just explained it so that a 3 year old can understand.
Great Great Job!
Get Well Soon baby.

Well since the Hawks dont have the room to get another good player then do a sign and trade with Dallas… I’m sure he would love to play with Jason Kidd and Dirk Nowitzki

Endorsment money for JJ??? Most companies stay away from athletes to endorse their product. They have been stung too many times. And what does JJ bring to the table that would convince Dial, Coke, Lever Bros,Ford to name just a few, to use him as a spokesperson? Very few players get any endorsement money. No $ in NY for JJ on that front.
