ESPN.com’s Chris Broussard says the Knicks will meet with J.J. in Los Angeles soon after free agency opens at midnight Thursday.
That’s no surprise since New York is one of a handful of teams with the cap space to offer J.J. a max deal and it’s always been speculated J.J. would look at the Knicks because of his his strong relationship with coach Mike D’Antoni from their Phoenix days. Until now I’d always heard New York wasn’t very interested in Johnson, but apparently that’s not the case. Broussard says the Knicks think J.J. can sell LeBron on teaming up in New York, which seems to be kind of a backwards arrangement.
The most interesting part of Broussard’s story is that he reports Johnson is willing to take less money from the Knicks, who can’t pay him as much as the Hawks due to salary-cap rules. According to Broussard, J.J. believes he can make up the roughly $25 million difference through endorsements and stock shares in Madison Square Garden. (Edit: I’m pretty sure paying a guy in stock options would be against NBA rules because it is a circumvention of the salary cap. Edit2: A helpful reader emailed to point out the league has already addressed this specific situation.) If the Hawks resign themselves to J.J.’s departure, he could get the $25 million and they could get an asset through a sign-and-trade.
Don’t ask me about the stocks, but J.J. hasn’t been a very marketable player, nor has he been very enthusiastic about marketing himself. Not sure how much that changes even playing in New York, especially if he’s on a team with either LeBron or Amare. And I’m still waiting to see all these older free agents willing to forsake $20-30 million in salary just so they can be more famous, play on a better team, bring in extra endorsements, live in a better city or whatever.
In any event, J.J. taking less money to play elsewhere is the scenario most feared by Atlanta . Rumblings that J.J. may be willing to do just that before free agency has already begun will only increase the Hawks’ nervousness about his departure. Getting the word out there certainly gives J.J. more leverage with the Hawks, who at some point may have to decide if they will give J.J. a six-year, maximum-level salary.
I wouldn’t think J.J. would be a New York kind of guy–if he thinks he got it bad here after fading in the playoffs, wait until he’s the goat in that city. I’ve always thought the Bulls would be J.J.’s most likely destination if he left Atlanta. Just a couple days ago K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune reported that J.J. was ready to make an early commitment to the Bulls.
But then Jonathan Abrams wrote in the New York Times that the Bulls are the favorites to land LeBron and Bosh, which would not leave money for J.J. Then again, maybe Bosh really is headed for Miami and then J.J. and LeBron can team up in Chicago.
Already you can see how free agency is going to be a pretty silly season.

But he as a lot of people to support, so he really needs the Max Money to keep everybody happy.

Aound Lebron were just a bunch of role players at best Micheal Cunningham, I love to hear the people on this blog just bash the hawks and say things like noone will come here, the hawks aren’t legit title contenders, so NY Mia New Jersey, Chicago are title contenders? Cleveland never was a title contender and anyone with basketball sense knows this the personnel around Lebron were just a bunch of role players at best. What do you think of this trade scenario? Trade Marvin to Toronto for Turkolo, trade jj to Utah for okur and cory brewer.Sign rudy gay in free agency.
Hoops why do u want Lou Deng the guy is a bust? He was a number one option and avg 17 a game, makes no logic to me he actually isn’t better than marvin(if given the same touches)?
Football fan popular to contrary beleif the hawks will not bow out if jj leaves. If Lebron leaves cleveland isn’t a playoff team and whatever team he goes to is top dog in the east, and if wade stays and bosh goes there they will be better but, no championship unless they add another big free agent,so miami a be a top five seed and so will whereever lebron goes, same for orlando boston and us.
Tdot do u really think jj is a twenty or thirty game differential piece by himself? that’s putting him into Kobe. Wade,Lebron territory,if he was that good we would a never went thru the 13,20,or thirty win season in the first place, the hawks won because they actually have some good players on this roster, with a system and a piece here and we’llcan actually be legit contenders. Look at Orlando this team doesn’t have a better roster than boston, portland, atlanta, dallas, phoenix, lakers, but they have that one great mismatch player dh and that team is built around him.
I personally think the hawks can compete better without him, cause I know we will get something in return plus we will play as a team. Al is a littel Tim Duncan and he is the 4th option Josh will be better and Jordan Crawford is gonna be the ish, bring in Mehmet Okur, Rudy Gay we’ll be good.

People tend to talk about als points, but fail to realise he isn’t even a offensive option and scores 15 a game and josh scores 17 as a third option these young dudes will be beasts when joe leaves cause it will be there team and they love playing together

Horford expects Johnson to stay with Hawks
Posted Jun 28 2010 7:40AM
SINGAPORE (AP) — Atlanta Hawks center Al Horford says he expects teammate and fellow All Star Joe Johnson to re-sign with the team when free agency opens July 1.
“I haven’t talked to him about that, but I think he’ll stay,” Horford said Monday in Singapore, where he’s part of a group of NBA players and coaches conducting a basketball clinic. “The team’s number one priority is trying to get Joe back with us.”
Johnson, a four-time All-Star who averaged 21.3 points a game last season, had a poor performance in the Hawks’ second round playoff loss to the Orlando Magic. Atlanta fired head coach Mike Woodson after the season and hired assistant Larry Drew earlier this month to replace him.
Horford said bad relations among players undermined the team’s play and led to the playoff debacle, where the Magic beat the Hawks by an average of 25.3 points in the most lopsided four-game sweep in NBA history.
Orlando later lost to the Boston Celtics, who were defeated by the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Lakers.
“It was players maybe not getting along with other players, and I think that showed on the court,” Horford said. “We weren’t playing together, we weren’t doing things as a team. I really felt like the chemistry kind of disappeared. I don’t think everyone was committed to the right things and to winning.”
Horford, who averaged 14.2 points and 9.9 rebounds a game last season, said he needs help up front for the Hawks to win the Eastern Conference.
“We need another guy to come in and help me out, especially as far as rebounding and defending go,” Horford said. “If we do that, it gives us a chance to be a real contender in the East.”

Pants on the Ground!
When it comes down to Mr. Johnson? The ASG are on their KNEES – (translation) Pants on the Ground!
From that position we can’t even “Kick the CAN up the road!”. All we can do is wait and see what
Joe will do. He may or may not re-sign. So, Stop trying to trade him to every team in this league!
Just Stop it!
Mr. Johnson is a man of very few words, so when he does speak? Just listen to him.
When we played our last game in MSG, he told a reporter that the Knicks and NYC is nice and
In the same breath, he said, he will not regress and go to a rebuilding team. Last I checked,
The Knicks have been re-building for the past 10 years maybe longer. See Isaiah Thomas and Larry Brown.

No matter what happens Joe deserves the right to decide on his own destiny. He got a good offer from ATL already, now we just keep it on the table and also offer to match offers when they come. Let’s face it, he’ll decide his own destiny.
I don’t see NY a fit unless he has someone like Wade or Lebron to make him 2nd option. Joe didn’t like our criticism, how’s he gonna fair in NY, NJ(NY again), CHI? Maybe in Miami he’d be alright, but elsewhere they’re gonna demand more than we did. Joe couldn’t accept he was our leader, when he laid an egg it went bad. A new coach, a new season and some hope we’ll all forget.
It all comes down to where’s he gonna want to live? How much $$ does his family need to maintain their expectations?

Najeh, I ditto on what drmaryb said about your knowledge of the game. That was only a faint reference to you. I have always enjoyed reading your comments, and appreciate your insight of the game.
I was really speaking out to notion that we would get something in return if JJ walks. I think that is being over simplified. The odds are we get nothing in the aftermath of JJ departure…plus, we are left with a big void in talent. I don’t know of another guy on the team that would command a double team…maybe JC when is on…but his defense would still be a liability, and you still need JC production off the bench. Take away JC production off the bench, you are at the bottom of league in bench scoring. How do you account for that???????????????????
Remember LA before Gasol, and Boston before KG, and RAllen. We fans can’t have it both ways. If you are going to criticize the ASG for being frugal…then turn around and whine if they pay their best player max dollars to retain his service…what’s your point.
The only reason other teams are willing to pay JJ max dollar…is cuz he is worth it…get over jeeez.
Woody is gone…fore get about what happen with JJ in Woody’s scheme…LD has already signal that he is moving in a different direction. I am ready to do the same.

Gotta keep Jamal on the bench for firepower. I see nothing wrong with the Jo Crawford pick under these circumstances. So who’s this great center your’re talking about?

How many people in the league would have thrived in the “ISO JOE” offensive. I cant name five people in the entire NBA. Before we throw JJ under the bus anymore, maybe we should look at what he does. Hes a 6′8 shooting guard that plays D, who can handle the rock, isnt afraid to take the big shot, and can take over games. I know he didnt do well in the playoffs, but with the horendous coaching we had, JJ could have averaged 35 and we STILL lose by double digits.
I for one would love JJ to sign back with this team, with an offense that can use the unique abilities that our players have. Hopefully that means JJ starts to be a shooter some of the time, and not just a scorer (kind of like when he was in PHX and had one of the best 3pt. %) let Al and Josh use their quickness against bigger and slower big men, let Teague play, JC do what he does, and maybe even figure out an offensive role for Marvin.
Like my question before name me how many players in the NBA that have JJ’s skill set.

We need names of who sabatoged our chemistry. Those should be dealt with and asked if they want to be here or need to be traded. It was obvious we collapsed only to see Orlando fall victim to the same. I think Boston just ran out of gas in LA. It’ll be interesting to see how they handle free agency.
Definitely piles of bigs available at 24? We’ll see how they pan out. Yes, yet another year where the draft leaves you wondering WTF?

Just to bring some perspective to all of this.
I trust the “capologists” on Hawksquawk, and the numbers that they cite.
The MAX that an under the cap team could offer JJ . . . is 5yrs – 92 million. That’s 18.4 million a year.
The MAX that the Hawks could offer JJ . . . is 6 yrs – 119 million. That’s 19.83 million a year.
To match the average yearly payout of a 5 year MAX contract, the Hawks would have to offer a 6 yr – 110 million dollar deal.
The question is . . . could the Hawks get away with offering him something a little less than that?
Could a 6 yr – 100 million ( 16.67 million a year deal ) . . . or . . . 6 yr – 105 million ( 17.5 million a year deal ) keep JJ in ATL?
The gross misconception around these parts, is that if we sign JJ to a MAX deal, we have to hold onto him for the duration of his contract when he’s not worth the money. But they forget the history of the league.
The history of the league has shown that championship level teams who may need one more major piece to put them over the top, will readily trade expiring contracts for a very good player, to make that playoff push.
So if in 2 – 3 years the Hawks aren’t improving past 2nd round level, and the ASG ( or whatever ownership is here ) decides to put JJ out on the market, he’ll become a very attractive piece to a championship puzzle to a championship contending team . . if they have enough expiring contracts to deal for him. The only way he wouldn’t, is if JJ suffers an injury that see his game completely fall off the map.
People that talk about a JJ contract “crippling the Hawks” aren’t even making sense. What have been the type of contracts that have “crippled the Hawks” in the past
- grossly overpaying Alan Henderson back in the day. He was making over 7 million at one time.
- paying Speedy Claxton, but basically seeing him being hurt 2.5 out of the 3 years he was under contract with us.
- possibly grossly overpaying for the services of Zaza, Bibby, and Marvin
In other words, it’s not the big contracts that “cripple a team”, It’s all of those worthless contracts from underperforming players that do it.
Because when you’re getting poor production out of a player, it’s hard as hell to move guys like that until the final yea of their deal. Nobody is trading for Marvin Williams at this point in time. His value decreased significantly this season. Eddy Curry is another guy who would’ve been easy to move, if he were worth a damn. But because he isn’t, teams won’t consider taking a guy like that until this season . . . and only for salary cap relief.
If JJ’s numbers by 2012 – 13 dip to:
17.8 ppg
4.2 rebs
3.6 asst
44% FG
37% 3FG
A championship contending team is still going to want a guy like that to compliment its star player. And they’ll do whatever they can to bring a player like that into the mix.

Northcyde,
Good points. And since JJ does not rely on athleticism, his game shouldn’t decline as fast. My only concern is his body breaking down, because he has played a lot of minutes.
And my concern about offering him the max is how much money is left over to upgrade the rest of the team? ASG already complains about lack of fan support.
Paying JJ max will increase payroll, with no guarantees of attendance and revenue being any better. It will be interesting to see what sund does.

Word on the street is: When the Hawks arrived in Milwaukee, he had no “Fear of the Deer” and
tried to be Joakim Noah by saying, “Everybody knows there ain’t nothing to do in Milwaukee, so,
I guess I will go to Ruth Christ’s Steak House!”. Little did Josh know – there is no Ruth Christ’s Steak House in
Milwaukee!
So, when the team arrived at the Hotel and were checking in, Mike Woodson saw three stretch
Limos lined up out front. Woodson, commented to the clerk , “Who’s in town?”. Thinking
It was some other star. The clerk told Woodson the Limos were ordered by J-Smoove and was going
to Chicago, IL. for a night on the town there. I think it was like an hour and fifteen minutes drive time to go there.
Two things happened:
1. Joe became very VOCAL and was extremely upset re: the comments Josh made in the media, which fired up the city and the opponent to compete harder!
2. Joe was very upset about the three Limos going out to party, while the team was on a business
trip and not a vacation / sight-seeing getaway!
He basically got in Josh’s and his crew faces! Remember, Joe sleeps 14 hours per dayan starting the second they hit the plane. He’s not playing cards, XBOX 360 and watching movies. Like LeBron,
he is a big time sleeper. I guess 82 games can take a toll and become very tiresome and boring after 10 years doing it.

He will and should listen to every suitor he has: that is the point of being an UFA – that is what it means.
He has to listen to all the offers and discuss them with his Agent. He is a professional
athlete – its his job!

NEVER HEARD!
I never heard Joe say that he would take less to play in NY or any other city for that matter.
He will and should listen to every suitor he has: that is the point of being an UFA – that is what it means.
He has to listen to all the offers and discuss them with his Agent. He is a professional
athlete – its his job!
I never heard Joe say, he does not want to resign in Atlanta, he actually said the opposite:
“I need to be convinced that the team chemistry issues will be resolved and that we are
All committed to winning, and that we get the right players to win with. I Like it here!”
I don’t believe anything I read in a paper or see on TV – it may be propaganda! I only believe half of what I see. Until, verified, its all alleged.
Why is no one saying Wade is leaving Miami? Isn’t he an UFA too? I do think there is a better
Chance Joe leaves Atlanta than LBJ leaving his so-called family of Brothers dance team in Cleveland.
I think the top-dogs stay put, they have nop reason to pack up and move! Let the 2nd
Tier guys do that! Its good to be the KING!

This is a good FA report, perhaps the must comprehensive for a list of 40.
