It might feel like Christmas in July for the Hawks if J.J. returns. (LOUIE FAVORITE / lfavorite@ajc.com)
There’s been much hand-wringing among my blog people about the Hawks’ draft, and I get that. Even when your team is picking No. 24, and even when that team is the Hawks, the hope is that somehow they beat the odds and find a rookie who can be a major contributor for a team that won 53 games last season.
But regardless of how you feel about the draft, it was far less important than what happens over the next couple weeks. Free agency opens at midnight Thursday, when teams can negotiate with players on the market. Deals can be struck during that time but signings can’t happen until a week later. And of course the biggest deal for the Hawks is what happens with J.J.
The Hawks want J.J. back. The things outsiders debate about regarding J.J.–his age, his minutes, his isos, his leadership, his postseason fade, etc.–don’t seem to be such issues at Centennial Tower. The Hawks value J.J. not because they won’t have the ability to sign a comparable free agent if he bounces, but because he’s a heck of a player whom they’ve built their team around.
As all of the rumors have swirled about J.J. wanting to leave for more shine, because of a beef with the fans, to be part of the super summit and whatnot, I’ve maintained that if the Hawks offer him the most money he will come back. The Hawks still believe they can re-sign J.J. because they can offer him the most money, and they don’t expect cash to be the issue.
Yeah, I understand you are skeptical about that part, but that’s their perspective. The difference in the maximum the Hawks can offer Joe and what other teams can give him is substantial. The exact numbers won’t be known until the league sets the salary-cap numbers for next season, which it will do during the July 1-8 moratorium. But it’s going to be something like $119 million max over six years from the Hawks for J.J., $92 million max over five years from someone else.
That’s $27 million, and as D-Wade told reporters: “Thirty million means a lot to anybody. To Bill Gates, $30 million means a lot.”
The Hawks are less concerned about the money and more worried about the knocks J.J. takes from fans and (cough, cough) media types. They fear he might decide to play for less money somewhere else because of those issues or something else they can’t control. Maybe those concerns are valid, but I’m still waiting for someone to show me players who leave that kind of cash on the table, particularly when it’s the last big contract they will get. The best way to show a player love and appreciation is, and always has been, to show him more money.
So, to summarize . . . The Hawks badly want J.J. to return. If it comes down to money, the Hawks like their chances to re-sign him. If it comes down to something else, they will get a little nervous. I’m guessing it will come down to money and if the Hawks step up in that regard, even if it means paying him the max, then J.J. will be back.
– The Hawks have opened a dialogue with Chills, a sign that perhaps he might soften his stance on returning to Atlanta. If it’s true that his Greek team doesn’t want him, that would seem to increase the attractiveness of a return to the league. Nobody wants to be where they aren’t wanted, after all, especially when that place isn’t even the best place to ply your trade.
Also, Chill’s market value may not be what he thinks. I’ve heard that a couple teams were interested in a sign-and-trade for him last summer, but the money they were talking about offering him was less than what Atlanta was dangling before he bolted for Greece. So Chills may not get what he wants when he goes looking for an offer sheet, especially when you consider teams are even more frugal now than they were then. Combine the market realities with the lack of Olympiakos love and that one-year, $4.8 million contract from the Hawks might start to look more appealing.
– Clearing up the confusion on Pape Sy. . . . I screwed up when I blogged that L.D. thinks he can play center. My bad. The Hawks measured Sy at 6-7 in shoes. L.D. thinks he could possibly play small forward but the Hawks essentially see him as a combo guard. Now we will see if they keep him around to try and develop him, which hasn’t been their M.O. in recent years.
– The Hawks are optimistic they can put together a good summer league roster. It’s important because they want Rook’ to have a good squad to work with in Las Vegas. My bosses just gave me the OK to head out there, too, so my blog people will get some firsthand accounts of Rook’, Jordan Crawford, Sy, and L.D.’s revolutionary new offense. There’s also a slight chance I end up in a casino.
– Thanks for all the comments over the last few days. Good to see my blog people still care, even if some of you don’t care for me. It’s all love. And it’s just basketball.
– Go USA. Beat Ghana.

dmb microfractue is done on the tib fib and is for exactly what you say chris paul has. i was wondering if paul had his cartilage removed why they didnt do microfracture surgery which is actually done on the femur and tibia to promote cartilage like ingrowth to replace the meniscus injured and ineffective. amare is the best example of how it works well. i was amazed how he came back from his surgery.

Reviewing what could have been, you can always find a 3 to fill your lineup. Its the 1 and 5 that are so tough to come by.
You have to look at the SA model. For years, they kept a limit to the $$ they were putting out. Just the last 2 years, when they know the run is near end, have they increased their bottom line payout.
I know the ASG is pointing the the Spurs as an example on how to get this done. But we have neither a strong 1 or 5 (unless you are convinced Horford and Smoove are going to continue to co-exist. Then that leaves us Teague to get us moving up and down the court.
I am pointing out that long term we can do without a 6 year commitment to Joe and bring in pieces to complement what we do have:
- Try to get ANYTHING for Joe and you have 7M to assist you this year.
- Get a return on Chills S&T
Is it possible to survive this year without any other movement? I’m not expecting immediate improvement without Joe, but this franchise has much more flexibility going into the new CBA.

O’brien ,
Of course, telling me to “skip this paragraph” is the best way to get me to read it. I can but agree. Like I said earlier, we put all of our eggs in the JJ basket, and kept them there by drafting the way we did (though clearly Billy Knight thought Marvin would be the superstar that the predraft pundits said he had the potential to be, and that Shelden would be the next version of…well, I don’t know WTF he was thinking there..).
And now it’s pay more for the eggs that are now hardboiled an incapable of hatching into live chickens…or dump three-fifths of the basket, fry/scramble what’s left, and go looking for some cheap bacon or sausage to go with it.
Great. Just freakin’ great.

KevinM ,
You’re right. But the ASG can thank Billy Knight’s unique vision that the world will be ruled by forwards. Since then, it’s been impossible to find that rock solid 1 or 5 to anchor from. Bibby is not a pure pg (and never was), and we got him too late. Everything else has been either a failure or we got precisely what we paid for. In the meantime, we are left hoping that a young talented mid/latter first round pick can break the streak…
And we can forget getting that 5-10 year starter at center unless we mortgage away one of two excellent PFs…

Yes. In fact, summer league is usually more about young, inexperienced players choosing to do so, than it is about eligibility. Kevin Durant could have gone his second year, but there was no point. Teague? He could use the reps, even if (and I’m pretty sure of this) most of the guys he runs across won’t be in his league (except maybe the better rookies from the 2010 draft class).

“Okay Josh is cheaper and a better fit for our cash strapped organization-thats not the argument- Who is the better player right now….Stoudamire hands down.”
Amare is a better scorer than Josh, by far. So is Bosh. But neither one is even close to the defensive player Josh is, neither one has Josh’s passing ability, and Amare is definitely not as good a rebounder as Josh. (It’s debatable whether or not Bosh is a better rebounder — his numbers are better, but nobody else on his team even tries to get boards, so who knows whether or not he’d put those numbers up playing next to another strong rebounder like Horford.)
So if you’re asking who is the better player… maybe Josh is not better than either of them, but he’s certainly not worse.

Thanks. So if Chris Paul had a meniscus removed, Micro-Fracture surgery can address this?
Hmmm. Well in that case, it would be awesome for him. Wonder why not, then.

I am really lovin ‘nobody’ ideas..Putting Joe at SF and getting Ray Allen would be ideal..How is it, O’Brien, that we dont have the money to sign anybody else to play SG? Ray Allen is 34/35 yrs old..I cant see him costing too much to get. Also, Salmons should not be all that too expensive either. Rick Sund should at least check out that idea cause like they said, ‘u can never can have too many shooters’.
Also, I was too on that bandwagon to get rid of Joe, and still kinda is if we have to pay him max to keep him. We all have to understand that Joe was playing under Woodson’s system to play ISO Joe, but with Larry Drew’s system, Joe may be THAT top scorer we have always wanted in Joe b/c 1st of all, with Drew’s system, Joe wouldnt be all worned out cause it would be more like a catch-and-shoot thing. If the play is run correctly, and I mean CORRECTLY Josh and Jamal, Joe and Ray Allen for that matter would be our ‘Orlando Magic’ shooter clones. Teague could be the clone of Jameer Nelson with his speed to the basket, Joe and Allen would be the clones of Barnes and Rashard Lewis, and Josh/Horford could only wish they could be the clone to Dwight Howard but hopefully could give him as much trouble as possible. Our bench would be Shun Livingston(if we could get him cheap)/Bibby-PG(trade bait),Jamal C/Jordan C-SG, Marvin/Mo Evans-SF(trade bait), Horford/Morris-PF, Mcgee/Zaza-C(trade bait). Trade Chills rights 4 McGee. Trade Bibby, M Evans, & Zaza 4 cash (lol) or another back-up PF if Morris dont pan out.

I’ll take John Salmons over Joe Johnson. Salmons is opting out with the Bucks. Same type of player as Joe Johnson except he plays with a lot more heart which the Hawks will desperately need going up against LBJ, Wade, Derrick Rose and the like.
Joe Johnson is better than Salmons in terms of pure talent but not head over heels better. In addition the last two postseasons I’ve seen Salmons rise to the occasion for both the BULLS and the BUCKS while Joe Johnson has wilted under pressure.
I believe if the Hawks don’t resign JJ and somehow land Salmons, they will have additional cap room to sign a taller defender at center and small forward. Teague, Salmons, Williams? , Smith, and Horford, Jamal coming off the bench has us once again atop the conference.

MsDee,
If we resign JJ, we will be over the salary cap. If we want to sign free agents, all we will have is the mid-level (approximately $6 mil or so), and the bi-annual exception (approximately $3 mil or so). And we cannot combine them to sign one player.
In my opinion, Salmons will probably get $8 mil or so. And if Ray Allen will take a huge paycut, I dont see him leaving Boston.

There’s at least one good thing about all of this FA posturing, and that is, it will all come to a head within the next 2 weeks. If we do offer JJ a max, or near max contract, and he accepts, look for the Hawks to help pay for it by trading JaCrawford’s expiring contract.
If we end up resigning Childress, we can look for MEvans’ expiring contract to be moved as well. That would leave a bench with MWilliams, ZPachulia, JoCrawford and MBibby under contract. We could definitely afford to sign another FA Big, and maybe a vet PG, and we could get either or both in the JaCrawford and MEvans trades.
If we lose JJ, I really like the JSalmons option. He might not give us everything JJ has to offer, but he’s solid, and could end up being just as effective in HC LDrews OFF system. The thing I liked most about him was his willingness to roll up his sleeves and go toe to toe with JJ, especially defensively. He just didn’t back down.
He’ll have a lot more OFF and DEF help playing with us than he’d have with the Bucks. Even without JJ, with the right off season moves, this team could still end up better overall than last yrs team.

Doesn’t Sam Mitchell live in Atlanta? There is also a rumor that if Doc returns to Boston, Lawrence Frank (former Nets coach) will join his staff.
I’ll say this. Larry Drew needs to have established assistants, and preferably somebody with HC experience. I wonder if Paul Silas is interested in being an assistant coach?
But you know what the problem will be for Larry Drew as he tries to put a staff together? His salary this year is only $1.2 mil, so how much can they afford to pay his assistants?

the thing that makes Atlanta fans mad is that their teams never spend in free agency. They’d rather have some grass roots movement with a player they draft and then when the player is ready for a big contract they let him walk. The Braves were notorious for this and still are. I just love how the Falcons let Deion get outta here and the Braves let all that Hall of Fame pitching walk out the door…Glavine, Smoltz, Maddux, Steve Avery (lol)
The biggest thing the Hawks have done has been pass on CP3 and Deron Williams, trade Pau Gasol on draft day, let Dominique Wilkins walk. We’ve never had a notable coach of any significance.
I remember when we traded for Rasheed Wallace and everyone was excited. He was here for 1 game then traded to Detroit (I don’t even know who we got for him) where they would go on to dominate the Eastern Conference for half a decade. That’s the type of stuff the Hawks do.

And I can see Ray Allen taking a paycut cause again, he will be 34/35 yrs old, I cant see NOBOBY over paying Ray when he all but had 1 true showing in the Finals. He went ghost in the last 3 games. If we can pay Salmons $8 mil, we should definely be able to pay Ray that much.

Everyday to stay conditioned. Joe also appears to be in fantastic shape as well.

How do you classify a mentality that believes height alone is what makes a true center. With that sort of stupidity, I guess 6′11″ Dwight Howard isn’t as good as any of the taller centers in the league. And since Marvin Williams is one of the NBA’s taller SF’s, he must be one of the NBA’s best.
This individual would obviously take a center like 7′2″ Roy Hibbert, or anyone taller, over 6′11″ Dwight Howard, since he’s over 3 inches taller. After all, Dwight Howard is only an inch taller that 6′10″ AHorford. With that type of flawed mentality, how does he explain AHorford out rebounding most of the taller centers in the NBA, even when going head to head?

I meant Salmons can get $8 mil on the market from another team, but not from the Hawks. The most we could offer him is the mid-level ($5.8 – $6 mil).
Even if Ray Allen takes a HUGE paycut AND leaves Boston, I can see him going to Miami or Chicago to be the shooter they need.
The bottomline is, I dont see any big name players taking a pay cut to come and play for the Hawks. They will take a paycut to play for teams like the Celtics, Lakers, Heat, Magic, Cavs (if LeBron stays), Suns and Bulls (those kind of teams)….but not the Hawks.

While we’re on the JJ discussion, Sekou had this comment on his hangtime blog. It was a comment JVG made during the finals;
“Your best player can’t be your best-liked player,” Van Gundy said, meaning being Kobe has often meant getting in teammates’ faces during practices and games.
Although JJ might not be our best liked player, I think all his teamates like him. If we resign him, we need him to be more vocal, and to get in guys faces. Horford is on his way to being a leader, but JJ is still our best player, so he needs to contribute some leadership.

Micro-Fracture. What little I know about the surgery itself is what I learned from reading
the sports papers and articles that tried to explain Amare’s procedure, when he had it done.
I was wrong about the site of the drilled pin-holes, Doc helped me out with that part.
It’s the distal femur and proximal tibia and fibula bones, in other words, where all the long bones meet up at the knee joint itself. I said it was drilled into the patella.
Again, thanks Doc for the help there. Also, Doc said that this would be the right procedure
for Chris Paul’s injury. To stimulate new cartilage growth in the meniscus location.
I refer many patients to my favorite World Renowned Spinologist for consultations, evaluations and treatment options for spinal care. And, to the Orthopedist for extremity options as well.

“I remember when we traded for Rasheed Wallace and everyone was excited. He was here for 1 game then traded to Detroit (I don’t even know who we got for him) where they would go on to dominate the Eastern Conference for half a decade. That’s the type of stuff the Hawks do.”
They traded Sheed for the pick used on Josh Smith. Do people really forget tbis stuff six years after it happens?

Also, at the time the Hawks traded for Sheed, he was big time damaged goods. The general opinion on him was that he was a locker room cancer and off the court disaster waiting to happen. This is why the Blazers unloaded him for Shareef, a player with an expiring contract they had no intention of keeping. When the Pistons acquired him, he was seen as a huge risk by Joe Dumars and Larry Brown. Chances are if he had stayed in Atlanta, he would have been the same malcontent he was in Portland, in light of the instability and lack of a strong locker room presence the Hawks had at the time.
And anyway, at least from a statistical point of view, Josh Smith is at least as good as Sheed.

O’Brien & Ken Strickland,
Free Agency Thoughts-
I do not see JJ coming back to the Hawks. I think he will try to follow LaBron. LaBron is either going to the Nets or Bulls IMO. The Knicks cannot put enough good players together to play @ the level that he wants to play at. I really believe that LaBron will end up with the Bulls. I don’t see him going to Miami where Wade is the Man!
Let’s just say for a minute that LaBron goes to the Bulls. JJ would be a better fit with them than Bosh IMO. Bosh will then go to the Heat IMO.
If JJ goes to the Bulls, the Hawks should S&T JJ for Luol Denq & a 1st Rd. pick. That would keep the Bulls salary total @ 54.5M and the Hawks @ 58.2M. Both would be under the L. tax. Then, trade Bibby, Evans, and Zaza to the Bobcats for Chandler. The Bobcats want to move him from all that I have read. He has an expiring contract. The salary totals are within the NBA rules. This is the Hawks lineup:
PG-Teague, Crawford
SG-Childress, Crawford2
SF-Denq, Marvin
PF-Josh, Morris, J. Smith
C-Horford, Chandler, Siler
Now, if LaBron goes to the Nets, then the Hawks should S&T JJ for Devin Harris and a 1st RD. pick. That puts the Nets salary total @ 50.9M and the Hawks @ 62.8M (assuming we resign Childress). The Nets have the space to get another PG. Both are under the L. tax. Then trade Bibby, Evans, and Zaza to the Bobcats for Chandler. I really like this line up:
PG-Harris, Teague
SG-Crawford, Crawford2
SF-Marvin, Childress
PF-Josh, Morris, J. Smith
C-Horford, Chandler, Siler
What are your thoughts???

Great work on those S&T scenarios. I like the Bobcats scenario the best. And, it does not involve LeBron.
LeBron, isn’t going anywhere guys, he stays in Cleveland. What more could Cleveland have done
to put any better weapons around this guy! Consecutive MVP’s speaks for itself as far as putting
him in a position to win. Part of why they lost, was because LeBron is very immature and was
Sulking really bad after learning Delonte West was slamming his 41 year old Mother (Ms. Gloria)
eewwee – yuck! What was she thinking?
IDK how they can both show up in NJ, because IF both of them do S&T’s? Won’t the
Losing ball club want Devin in return? Unless a third or fourth team gets involved,
I suppose it could be done. But, LeBron will definitely get his deal done first, and
then Joe will get leftover money.
Besides, Joe and LeBron basically both play on the perimeter and would be redundant together,
Unless Joe gives up his game for the sake of team and Your-Heiness. I don’t see
LeBron going outa his way to accommodate Joe either play-wise, nor money-wise.
I see every man for himself as far as those two goes. LeBron needs to match up with a
Big Man down on the blocks.
Great read! Hoops!
