It might feel like Christmas in July for the Hawks if J.J. returns. (LOUIE FAVORITE / lfavorite@ajc.com)
There’s been much hand-wringing among my blog people about the Hawks’ draft, and I get that. Even when your team is picking No. 24, and even when that team is the Hawks, the hope is that somehow they beat the odds and find a rookie who can be a major contributor for a team that won 53 games last season.
But regardless of how you feel about the draft, it was far less important than what happens over the next couple weeks. Free agency opens at midnight Thursday, when teams can negotiate with players on the market. Deals can be struck during that time but signings can’t happen until a week later. And of course the biggest deal for the Hawks is what happens with J.J.
The Hawks want J.J. back. The things outsiders debate about regarding J.J.–his age, his minutes, his isos, his leadership, his postseason fade, etc.–don’t seem to be such issues at Centennial Tower. The Hawks value J.J. not because they won’t have the ability to sign a comparable free agent if he bounces, but because he’s a heck of a player whom they’ve built their team around.
As all of the rumors have swirled about J.J. wanting to leave for more shine, because of a beef with the fans, to be part of the super summit and whatnot, I’ve maintained that if the Hawks offer him the most money he will come back. The Hawks still believe they can re-sign J.J. because they can offer him the most money, and they don’t expect cash to be the issue.
Yeah, I understand you are skeptical about that part, but that’s their perspective. The difference in the maximum the Hawks can offer Joe and what other teams can give him is substantial. The exact numbers won’t be known until the league sets the salary-cap numbers for next season, which it will do during the July 1-8 moratorium. But it’s going to be something like $119 million max over six years from the Hawks for J.J., $92 million max over five years from someone else.
That’s $27 million, and as D-Wade told reporters: “Thirty million means a lot to anybody. To Bill Gates, $30 million means a lot.”
The Hawks are less concerned about the money and more worried about the knocks J.J. takes from fans and (cough, cough) media types. They fear he might decide to play for less money somewhere else because of those issues or something else they can’t control. Maybe those concerns are valid, but I’m still waiting for someone to show me players who leave that kind of cash on the table, particularly when it’s the last big contract they will get. The best way to show a player love and appreciation is, and always has been, to show him more money.
So, to summarize . . . The Hawks badly want J.J. to return. If it comes down to money, the Hawks like their chances to re-sign him. If it comes down to something else, they will get a little nervous. I’m guessing it will come down to money and if the Hawks step up in that regard, even if it means paying him the max, then J.J. will be back.
– The Hawks have opened a dialogue with Chills, a sign that perhaps he might soften his stance on returning to Atlanta. If it’s true that his Greek team doesn’t want him, that would seem to increase the attractiveness of a return to the league. Nobody wants to be where they aren’t wanted, after all, especially when that place isn’t even the best place to ply your trade.
Also, Chill’s market value may not be what he thinks. I’ve heard that a couple teams were interested in a sign-and-trade for him last summer, but the money they were talking about offering him was less than what Atlanta was dangling before he bolted for Greece. So Chills may not get what he wants when he goes looking for an offer sheet, especially when you consider teams are even more frugal now than they were then. Combine the market realities with the lack of Olympiakos love and that one-year, $4.8 million contract from the Hawks might start to look more appealing.
– Clearing up the confusion on Pape Sy. . . . I screwed up when I blogged that L.D. thinks he can play center. My bad. The Hawks measured Sy at 6-7 in shoes. L.D. thinks he could possibly play small forward but the Hawks essentially see him as a combo guard. Now we will see if they keep him around to try and develop him, which hasn’t been their M.O. in recent years.
– The Hawks are optimistic they can put together a good summer league roster. It’s important because they want Rook’ to have a good squad to work with in Las Vegas. My bosses just gave me the OK to head out there, too, so my blog people will get some firsthand accounts of Rook’, Jordan Crawford, Sy, and L.D.’s revolutionary new offense. There’s also a slight chance I end up in a casino.
– Thanks for all the comments over the last few days. Good to see my blog people still care, even if some of you don’t care for me. It’s all love. And it’s just basketball.
– Go USA. Beat Ghana.

M. Cunningham ,
I’m glad you got the go-ahead on the summer league assignment. I can’t wait to hear about our summer league team (for once). There should be a lot of explosion from the backcourt tandem of Teague and Crawford.
I would like to know how Sy fares, and if Omar Samhan is good enough to get an invite to training camp (and manages to stick there). We haven’t done so well with big men in the summer league or in training camp.
I’ve always believed that part of it had to do with who we brought in, and part had to do with what the head coach thought. Well, the head coach has changed, but are we going to bring in better caliber players? I’m about done with the RandMo and Jason “Hamburgler” Collins types on our bench. And no more old guys who won’t get playing time (Joe Smith). That wasn’t the answer in the frontcourt last year, and it damn sure won’t be this year.

I would take Pryzbilla over Camby at this point the man will be 37 this season for cry’n out loud.
Josh is getting better every year but Stoudamire he is not -the numbers dont lie 23/9 …Not to mention hold’n his own against the best front line in the league when it counted most-IN THE PLAYOFFS.
jamal crawford is a good player but lets not act like his talent cant be replaced.fernandez and Crawford 2.0 could easily give u 16 a game playing the same minutes.
As long as we have underacheivers (Bibby,ZAZA,Marvin) eating up cap space we are trapped in the land of mediocrity. There probably wont be any trades -no one else wants them. I actually want to see what R Morris can do now the Woody is gone -The one thing he did consistently was snatch guy’s confidence.
Pape Sy- Fa Real???? I hope he turns out to be that diamond in the ruff, but 6 ppg in a weak French league doesnt sound promising.

STB LeHavre plays a freaky version of a zone offense (yeah I really typed that)… They spread the bigs and will pop to the wings and the guards will drive and dish and then spot up… Their two and three score most of their points and they feed the post in a weird way but get a fair share of their points from two. They play a lot of games which aren’t really high scoring but they win…

cdog, my man……I have been saying this about Sund all along too. I’ve posted these comments 9,230,136 times and admit amongst my obnoxious nature, that I am 100 % correct on this one:
1) Sund has accomplished nothing in this league. he drafted ROBERT SWIFT, PETRO, AND SENE WITH HIGH PICKS (2 OF THEM). These are 3 of the worst players of the last decade
2) He said he didn’t mind the blowouts to Orlando because other teams were getting blown out too.
3) He has NO intention of trading our core. Barkley said it best…This team has gone as far as it can. Bibby sucks, Marvin sucks, Smoove’s attitude sucks. Trade some of these damn players and get a Danny Granger or Devin Harris in here.
Sund is a useless GM and ASG has no money and only cares about winning home games to help revenue.
Am I wrong?

I MUS WRITE,
You say Stoudemire “held his own in the playoffs”. Yes, he did. On OFFENSE. But on defense? He was bad. In the playoffs, he averaged 6 rebounds per game against the Lakers, and 6 rebounds per game against Portland. He is 6’10”, 250 lbs, and you call that holding your own?
Ken Strickland,
Let me ask you this. How would you distribute the minutes if we kept everybody?
If we keep Jamal Crawford, Jordan Crawford, Mo Evans, Marvin Williams and Josh Childress, where do we find the minutes to play them? Between SF and SG, we have 96 minutes total.
If you give Marvin 20 minutes, Chills 28 minutes, and JJ 36 minutes, that’s already 84 minutes. Only 12 minutes left over for Jamal, Jordan, and Mo Evans.
If you include PG, that’s another 48 minutes. But Teague will probably get 25 minutes, Bibby will get 15 – 20, so that only leaves 3 – 8 minutes.
That’s the reason why we would trade Crawford. We have too many SGs (4 to be exact: JJ, Jamal, Jordan, and Mo). And there is not enough minutes to go around. And Jamal is our best trade asset.

“Trade some of these damn players and get a Danny Granger or Devin Harris in here.”
I’m with you on Sund — he is nothing impressive. But what exactly have Danny Granger and Devin Harris accomplished in the NBA that makes you think the Hawks would win more games with them? If I’m not mistaken, their teams COMBINED won less games than the Hawks this year…

Not that JJ needs me to play agent for him, and I doubt I even get the 3% commission as a blog credit much less in real cash, but here goes.
The Hawks were willing to give up a player (Diaw), a pair of 1st round picks, and $20 mil in 1st year salary to get Joe 5 years ago. Now that he has produced and is definitely the best player on this team, you balk at giving him about $20 mil/yr for 6 years in his prime. If he walks, the team gets worse; there may not be playoffs…and that means even less revenue.
He has been the best player on this team every year he has been here. He will likely be the best player on this team for the majority of that new contract. If the Hawks don’t step up, another team will. That probably means that the Hawks get NOTHING for him leaving. Even if you warm up to a sign & trade option, what you get back isn’t close to comparable. You won’t get Hinrich in a S&T with the Bulls. The only options left on the Miami roster aside from Beasley (who they may keep) are the lockers…the roster is empty.
It is too tough to rebuild a roster when most of your contracts have multiple years on them. The Hawks could be in salary cap purgatory for years. If you don’t like the fact that your best player is ONLY one of the top 20 in the league, how happy will you be when your top player is one of the top 40 instead?
You want excitement, hope LD opens up the offense to run more, watch Josh dunk, or count those handful of 4 pt plays that Jamal will get. If you want wins-show Joe the money.

For the sake of argument, why don’t we do for JJ what we did for Josh Smith; ask him to find the best market contract so the Hawks could match and then even add 10% to be the highest bidder. It maybe that JJ can’t come back with a $92 million max contract offer. His stock has fallen and apparently there is a growing whisper (around the league) that his true value is second tier or less then elite. Yes he could just take less and send us off mad. Remember, we weren’t the only ones that saw him lay numerous eggs in the play-offs. Other sports pundits witnessed it too and gave testimony statements about his performance on national TV (Kenney and Charles B just to name a few). For the Hawks to just hand JJ a 119M max contract because they fear they may lose him is outrageous. What image does that create about the Hawks Organization around the league? If JJ couldn’t deliver during his contract year with his money on the line, what could possibly motivate him after he cut himself a max deal? The obvious answer is a title. But as we all know, the Hawks are not a title contender team (yet). On a tight budget, will we be anytime soon? If this becomes a revelation to JJ after he cut his max deal, then what would drive him to become the Hawk expected superstar? However, If JJ somehow pulls off this apparent rip-off of a deal, should we really be mad at JJ or Hawks Management Inc (HMI)? As they say don’t hate the player, hate the game or in this case, the administrators of the game (HMI).

D.Harr and Granger were banged up this year. Granger is a lethal scorer in this league. Harris was probably his best last year (08-09) but wouldn’t mind having him despite his injury-prone state.
LOL @ the Sund “superstar” quote. The best player he’s drafted is probably some white guy on his Mavs teams I don’t even recall.
Why do people want to trade Jamal? he is our best offensive player. He can score on anyone in this league. he SCORES EASY BASKETS. He doesn’t toil for 22 seconds and get awkward contested jumpers off like that other guy on this team. He has a great contract and likes Atlanta. Let him expire here and try resign him. The guy is a scoring machine.
Who gives a !@#$ if Mo Evans is traded/were to leave? He sucks. He has one good game every 10, and those other 9 games is about as effective as Matt Freije was here

LBJ is going to Miami or Chicago.
LAL is a lock for the Finals the next 3 years with how bad the West is (no one can challenge the Laker Big 5, who are all locked up at least a few more years each). So you will see major teaming up in the East. If Wade, LBJ, and Bosh all go to different teams / stay on their current ones, no one will win over 2 rings in his career, especially with D.Rose and guys like Evans and Durant out there. So you will see LBJ team up with Rose or Wade. Mark my word.

-Now-
We had our Big & we sold him.
-So-
Obviosly, the Hawks don’t give a crap about Bigs.
It’s time to quit worryin’ about [4's] & [5's]
-and-
Just find us five guys who function as a single-minded
unit, develop chemistry, then make every attempt to become
as close as possible to a “TEAM” that resembles the:
86 CELTICS !!!
-Then-
find 3 or 4 scrappers to come off the bench & play as if…
their pants are on fire.
We already have the makings of that kind of team. They’ve
been together for a long while, grown up together, &…..
-now-
They finally have a coach to mold them into a unit.
Really thats more important than whether a center is,
6-10 or 6-11. Of course we must have talent, which we
already have a great deal thereof. Re-sign Childress &
Joe…the pieces are almost together.
*REMEMBER* five guys + single-minded purpose = success.

Joe Johnson is a good player, but I’m not big on the hype about him. Joe Johnson has been playing in an offense, where all the coach did was allow him to get the ball, hog it, and do whatever he wants. With the ball in his hands so much, JJ’s stats have been a little padded.
How well will JJ play and how will his stats look in offense that involves more player and ball
movement, without the ball in his hands so much??? (I have to assume Drew’s offensive scheme is gonna be more than just everybody else standing around and watching ISO-Joe).
Even if Joe leaves, I think there are several scenarios where the Hawks could be just fine or better.
PG Upgrade, another “scorer” (doesnt have to be a big name), more size (or atleast some serviceable, gritty “tough guy” in the front court)
I think more player and ball movement will benefit the athleticism of Marvin, Horford and J-Smoove as well, which should make them more productive.
We can do it without this clutchless star.

The Hawks will probably offer Joe the max or something like it, even if he tells them he isn’t coming around. Word is that he’s already hanging out in Chicago and places like that. Well, you do as you must.
If we max him out contract-wise, and Larry Drew convinces him that chemistry and accountability will be better…he probably stays. If he’s not convinced that we can play better as a team and have better chemistry, or the Hawks fiddle f-ck around with the contract details, he’s gone. Above all, Joe is going to do what he wants to do, and he’ll make up his own mind. The ball is entirely in his court. All the Hawks can do is make promises and offers, and as everybody else says…”show him the money.”
I don’t even see the point of talking anymore about what he brings to the game. We know the guy can play. We know the playoffs went all wrong. What we don’t admit to enough is that this team did not act like a team, and that the strategies and tactics involved did not work (or change). We had given up by the time the second quarter of the first game in the series against Orlando was over. Nobody played well in that series. Nobody played as well as they could have.
As for Rick Sund….
People keep forgetting one small thing: the man can only do what his group of bosses lets him do. I don’t care how many times Michael Gearon and the rest of his clown possee says he has autonomy. He doesn’t and that’s that. Those guys have him on a tight budget. Now, does he do all the things you want him to? No. I still think he should have treated the Josh Childress situation a little differently.
But was anybody complaining about Jamal Crawford? Sund turned two guy we had no use for into a guy that I guarantee we wouldn’t have won 53 games without. Is this the kind of move that crappy GMs make? On the other hand, he did re-sign Bibby, Pachulia, and Williams, but who knew that all three would have subpar years (to be honest, Zaza was the best of the three, so how’s that for putting it into perspective)? And besides, that was something Mike Woodson wanted as well.
I wasn’t overly impressed with anything else he did, including signing Joe Smith. Then again, I expected Joe to play more, and to produce more. Neither one happened. I do have to say that he (and in reality, the ASG) must follow through with his comments on veteran players.
I’m not sure I want Randolph Morris to get another chance with this team. Offensively, he has some skill. However, he doesn’t put forth the effort on the boards in the amount of playing time I’ve seen him get, and he is a foul machine. Can’t blame those last two on Woody. I don’t want another Jason Collins situation either. The guy is overweight, out of shape, and very one dimensional. I think we clearly saw why he didn’t get the PT. Get me some better vets in here, or I’ll be bangin’ the drum right alongside the others.
Until then…
