UPDATE: The Hawks selected Texas forward Damion James with the No. 24 pick and traded him to the Nets for the second of their first-round picks (No. 27 overall) and their second-round pick (No. 31). The Nets selected Jordan Crawford for the Hawks at No. 31.
More updates later. . . .
I scoured the Interwebs to find some mock drafts for your consumption. This is also the place for my blog people to talk amongst yourselves as the night unfolds. I’ll be holed up at Centennial Tower waiting for the Hawks’ decision-makers to pick their guys before emerging to explain themselves, but I will checking in on your comments.
So think positive thoughts and hope your Hawks buck recent trends and find a gem late in the first round. . . .

Last Season Hoopsworld had the Hawks pegged right the whole summer by saying we would take Jeff Teague. Their final mock draft this summer has us taking Devin Ebanks in the 1st and Jerome Randle in the 2nd. I like it, I wouldn’t be mad with that at all.

@RaJaH: They are trying to clear cap room. Their pick is #17 and I doubt there is going to be anybody there that isn’t a project (like Whiteside) who is going to help much more than the Hawks #24. I don’t see the value in that trade.

Tonite will be another disappointment in Hawks history. They will likely trade the pick for cash and #24 will be an all-star in the NBA. With the Hawks its simple just follow the money, just like with the Larry Drew case.
NBA Draft Express: Horrible, why take Dominique Jones who is an undersized SG when Craig Brackins is there? Stupid so the Hawks would do it.
NBA Draft Net: Great the perfect guy and scenario Whiteside. So, the Hawks would not do that they are too stupid too.
SI.com: Jordan Crawford over Paul George, okay so lets pass on Danny Granger twice, this is really for special education students only, what a dumb ass suggestion. So, the Hawks would do it.
Sporting News: Jordan Crawford over Brackins again, what ignorance that would be. So, the Hawks will do it.
Chad Ford Insider 6.0: has Hawks taking Whiteside which once again is a great move. (By the way do more research before posting to meet your quota Mr. Cunnyboy)
Dime Magazine: Lance Stephenson over Craig Brackins and Damion James are you serious. Damion James was a player of the year candidate early in the season and a stud rebounder, runs the floor like a deer and Brackins has a special skill, he is a stretch 4 which the Hawks don’t have unless you want Josh taking jumpers. So, the Hawks would do it because they are stupid.
FanHouse: Larry Sanders is one of the more overrated players in draft but I would not be mad at this pick, he is atleast a big with overrated but decent athletic ability, better than Zaza to say the least. So, the Hawks would not do this because it makes some sense.
Hoopopinion: Larry Sanders, see above
Insidehoops: Daniel Orton over Craig Brackins are u kidding, Orton is like taking Marvin the Bust Williams all over again. A guy that did not even start for his college team and has shown nothing. The Hawks would do it because they love the great production they have gotten out of Marvin the Bust Williams
NBADraftRoom: Elliot I need to transfer to get playing time because I will never be really productive at Duke Williams over Larry Sanders who is once again big, long, and somewhat athletic, yes he is overrated but he is big and overrated, Williams is little and overrated. I will take the big overrated guy over the little overrated guy. The Hawks would do it because they are a trash operation.
SportsXChange: Terrico White, can’t argue here because all good players are gone, but this is the type of situation when you trade down, not for money when you are not gonna be able to sign any teams max players anyway.
SportsAgentBlog: This is the dumbest one ever. Quincy Pondextor over Hassan Whiteside and Craig Brackins: The Hawks will do it because they are the worse franchise in basketball, they even surpass the Clippers

RAJAH-The Bulls are suppose to have a deal in place where they’ve agreed to send Hinrich and their #17 pick to the Wizzards. Besides, like MBibby, Hinrich has declined in every way. So why give up JJ and pay him $9.5M for only 10.9PPG, 4.5APG, and .409FG% in 33.5MPG, compared to Bibby’s 9.1PPG, 3.9APG and.416FG% in 27.4MPG?
We can certainly come up with a much better sign and trade than that. Now if they’re willing to give up Deng or Noah and their 17th pick in a sign and trade for JJ, then we should talk.

K Dub the reason for so many bad drafts is no fundementals it showed for us in the playoffs as well as a few other “good teams”. If we are gonna makes some noise lets take page from Doc play defense, they may not have won it all but even with age they still played up to their potential on defense. I say trade or draft for a solid defensive player he will still do the same when playoffs come. Rebounds, Block shots, and Fundamentals are hard to find. Who is the next DeJaun Blair in this Draft !!

This rumor of Danny Granger & the 10 for Harris, Yi & the 3, just so Indiana can draft Favors, has me thinking. I’d give Josh Smith & Jeff Teague right now for Danny Granger, and they can keep the 10. Would you rather have Favors, Harris & Yi -or- Smith, Teague & #10?

“Al has peaked.”
Yeah, at 24 he’s already as good as he’ll ever get? Laughable, truly.
Well, if you have to peak early, at LEAST peak at an All-Star level, LOL! If peaking now means that he’s an All-Star every year, I’ll take it.
Only someone who HATED Al Horford could think such nonsense. Or is this some more “objective criticism”?
How “objective” is it to think a 24 year old with a great work ethic will STOP improving?
Really, is that “objective”?

I did not mean for you to show your emotional side, Sautee. I sorry you interpret my evaluation of Al as “hate”
My assessment of Al “peaking” is that His career ave is 12pts. he came into the season with an 11pt average (some where in that neighborhood) and was severely criticized for his lack of offensive tools. So severely that Woodson took the blame, being the player coach that he is and said I will work with Al and tweak him to help him get better offensively. Every time I mentioned that Al was mediocre offensively you cried and quote Woodson’s statement repeatly. OK as a result he went from 11.6 to 14.2 pts that equates to a basket increase per game. His career average is 12pts and his best college year was 13 point so I cant see where he can get up to the 17 18 19 or 20 pts level that would indicate some serious growth.
True he might have a 15 pt year but then again he might have a 11 pt year. The bottom line is he is what he is . Hes playing the best he can, which aint bad. But hes just about scoring as high as he can score. Hes not a Dirk with shooting or a strong slasher like Josh. What he does is work hard every night as a blue collar working who doesnt have the skills as much as he has the work ethics. Having said that, he is about as good as he gets. The upside is he will barring injury be able to be a hard worker for a long time.
Its ok to accept criticism of your hero, your god. Please try and control your emotions

Sell their pick? how the He** could ASG even consider selling a pick with the lack of success their teams have had. I can’t believe that the idea of selling picks is even allowed.
My thoughts…
Hopefully, the minds running the organization can figure out a way to give Josh and Al some help… outside of those two, the Hawks future is bleak. A top 10 talent to grow along with your main two is a start – then you still got to figure out what to do with Marvin somehow too – he just doesn’t fit in (unless Drew can work some magic with him.) Let’s face it, this team is much further away from winning a championship than it is close to it. resigning Joe only furthers us it doesn’t put us any closer. Get what you can for him Hawks! Hopefully, some team would be willing to part with a top ten pick for some combo of him, Marvin and Bibby.

@everyone on Chills: this issue is confusing because the original report was on a Greek Web site that was in turn citing another newspaper i’ve never heard of. the Greek story, when translated, doesn’t say anything about a sign-and-trade, which of course is the only way it can happen because the Hawks would have to give Chills and the Wiz permission to talk. if they are talking without Atlanta’s permission, it would be tampering.

Boring draft so far.. no major trades other than Miami and Chicago salary dumping, and none of these players beyond the top 7 look very impressive. Hopefully the Hawks can find a contributor at #24. I don’t think they are going to have the luxury of choosing a good player at a particular position.

Solomon Alabi
* SI Rank
* 7.5
* Ranking System
Position: C
Class: Junior
School: Florida State
Conference: Atlantic Coast
HT: 7′1″
WT: 251
Biography: Alabi declared for the draft after leading Florida State with 11.7 points and 2.3 blocks per game as a sophomore. In 77 career games with the Seminoles, he averaged 9.3 points, 5.5 rebounds and a school-record 2.1 blocked shots. The Nigerian-born center was a third-team all-ACC pick this past season when he helped Florida State to the NCAA tournament for the second straight year. He was twice chosen to the ACC’s all-defensive team, finishing second to teammate Chris Singleton for the conference’s defensive player of the year in 2009-10 after leading the ACC with 75 blocks. Expected to be picked late in the first round or early in the second, Alabi has a chance to be a very solid NBA player if he continues to show improvement. He plays well around the basket and can also step outside to hit shots from 10-15 feet. He is strong and has great length, making him an imposing figure on the defensive end. Alabi is still learning the game – mostly on the offensive end – and limited experience while being 22 years old will likely prevent him from going higher in the draft.

I think tonights Hawk maneuvering were straight money moves … the ESPN guys alluded to that fact (in general) when that GM guy was on: 1st rounders count against the cap hold, 2nd round guys don’t count vs. salary cap until they sign. So by trading Damion James to NJN for the No. 27 and 31st picks, the Hawks get a cheaper 1st round player (by slotting of salaries) and and a 2nd round guy who doesn’t count until he signs. ….then on top of that, by signing a Euro who will need a couple of years to develop, now he doesn’t count until he signs in a couple of years from now (at best)

Dexter Pittman went one pick later. Solomon Alabi and Hassan Whiteside are still available. SECOND ROUND PICKS DO NOT REQUIRE GUARANTEED CONTRACTS. YOU DON’T LOSE ANY MONEY BY PICKING SOMEONE IN THE SECOND ROUND. You gotta be kidding me.

I normally don’t get too bent out of shape about second-round picks, but when you have the first pick in the second round, that’s basically a free late first-rounder. Like I said, there’s no risk tied to that pick. It’s not like you are stuck paying him for several years if he turns out to be a dud. Maybe none of these big men pan out, but what do you lose by drafting someone and giving him a shot?
Tibor Pleiss wouldn’t have been higher than my 5th or 6th choice, definitely not over Whiteside or Pittman, but sh-t, at least bring him into training camp and give him a shot. Trading him for cash pretty much confirms all the accusations of cheapness that the fan base throws at the ownership.

Varnado and Jerome Jordan are still there. i would like to see us get one of those guys. I am even okay with Lawal if he is there at #53.

“Yall keep yelling how Sund and the ASG are dumb for not getting Whiteside, Jerome, or Solomon Alabi, but as yall see, noone else is picking them either..they probably made a great idea 4 not getting them,,we dont know how good or how bad the looked in workouts.”
First of all Whiteside already got picked. Secondly, whether or not they looked bad in workouts is irrelevant. SECOND ROUND PICKS DO NOT GET GUARANTEED CONTRACTS. This means even if they picked Whiteside or Pittman or Alabi or even Pleiss and brought them in for training camp and decided they sucked, they could cut them with NO FINANCIAL LIABILITY.
Even if one of them was good enough to make the roster, they would have made $550,000 this year and next, non-guaranteed. Their salary cap impact would have been as negligible as possible. The Hawks had absolutely nothing to lose by drafting one of them and bringing them in to see what they had.
Sund selling the pick tells me that OKC wanted Pleiss and Sund picked him for them. If the Hawks had planned on keeping the pick, maybe they would have picked one of the more popular players on this blog, who knows. But selling the pick for cash just tells me the Hawks are cheap. When you get rid of a no-risk asset and all you get in return is cash — less than a million dollars cash, at that — it just tells me they are cheap.

Do you really think Collins and Joe Smith, based on what you saw of them this year, are better players than the bigs who have gone in the second round so far?
My recollection is that Cheeseburger Collins could barely moved and committed a foul a minute, while Joe Smith had little left outside of his mid-range jump shot.
Maybe none of those second round big men end up panning out. But how does it hurt to just bring them into summer league with no financial liability and see whether or not they are good?
By the way, these second round big men would cost nothing too.

These dudes must be a lot more broke than any of us realize. The Heat gets Varnado, to possibly team with Joel Anthony . . who is a shot blocker that they got last year. And if Pittman pans out . . . man.
And they take a flyer out on Desean Butler . . whom people had projected to be a 1st round pick before he tore his ACL in that Final 4 game.
Plus they have enough money to add 2 MAX free agents, ontop of D-Wade?
Wow. As you said . . one team has a plan . . the other team is trying to save pennies.
There’s still a chance that one of those centers that everyone was drooling about, will be available at #53. But because they’ve fallen so far, you really have to question how good those guys really are. I’ve always said that most of those guys weren’t worth worrying about.

You’re right… even when it comes to guys like Whiteside and Pittman, who knows how good they will be. I’m not so p-ssed that those guys won’t be wearing Hawks uniforms. I’m mainly p-ssed at the message the DASG is sending, which is blatantly that they care more about money than assembling the best collection of players possible.

Anybody that are fans of Pro Basketball in Atlanta ( and I have been one since they moved here), understand this franchise is financially incapable of competing with the best teams. The ASG is cash poor and are running on fumes(thus the trade of the 1st pick of the 2nd round for cash).
So, if you are content to watch the other great teams come thru Phillips Arena on their way to playoff success, pay ticket prices for inferior product, and become ticket buying fools for an organization, that until new owners are found , will be unable to sniff an NBA Championship Finals. Well be my guest! Otherwise, stop supporting this team by buying tickets and helping to prop up the underfunded ownership group that can only offer the opportunity to watch Championship teams pass thru town and not be able to build one in Atlanta

I sure hope that $3 million goes towards a free agent center. Or maybe they know Joe is leaving, and are trying to get all the cash together that they can, so we can spend on more than just a center.

Who’s the worst GM in the NBA?

ALSO: Got an opinion on who is the NBA’s worst GM? Let’s hear it at The Scores Report!
Over lunch, I asked a friend of mine, “Who’s the worst GM in the NBA?”
His answer?
“Besides Isiah Thomas?”
Over the past few years, Thomas has certainly staked his claim as the very worst in franchise management, but I don’t think it’s fair to rush to judgment. There are some other perennially awful teams in the league, and in most cases, poor management is to blame. So who else should be in the conversation? I came up with a list of nine GMs who are leading teams that have gotten appreciably worse (or haven’t improved much) over the last few seasons:
Isiah Thomas (Knicks), Kevin McHale (Timberwolves), Billy King (Sixers), Billy Knight (Hawks), Danny Ainge (Celtics), Rick Sund (Sonics), Chris Mullin (Warriors), Bernie Bickerstaff (Hornets) and Larry Harris (Bucks).

For 3mil, I would have traded the pick also…The Hawks lost 50mil last year…you can’t be cheap, when you are losing that kind of money!!!!!!
I don’t think any of those players would have contributed this season…so why keep the picks. They are going to spend the money in free agency…Maybe.

Outside of Dick Motta here is Sund’s legacy for Coaching Hires
♦ 2. John McLeod (Dallas, 1987-89): Also a veteran coach who had reached the finals with Phoenix. In his first season with Dallas, McLeod coached the team into the Western Conference finals (Sund’s only conference finals appearance). But the Mavs failed to make the playoffs the following year and Sund surprisingly fired him only 11 games into the 1989-90 season. GRADE: C.
♦ 3. Richie Adubato (Dallas, 1989-93). This started a string of colossal failures by Sund. Adubato mostly had been an assistant, with one unsuccessful year as head coach in Detroit. He made the playoffs in his first season with Dallas but exited quickly. In the next two-plus seasons, the Mavericks went 52-141. He was fired after a 2-27 start in 1992-93. GRADE: F.
Quinn Buckner made the mistake of trying to emulate the ways of Bob Knight, his former college coach.
Quinn Buckner made the mistake of trying to emulate the ways of Bob Knight, his former college coach.
♦ 4. Gar Heard (Dallas, 1993): He took over as interim in 1993 and couldn’t stop the downward spiral. Record: 9-44. GRADE: Incomplete.
♦ 5. Quinn Buckner (Dallas, 1993-94): The grease fire of Sund’s hires. Buckner, who had no coaching experience, attempted to replicate the dictatorial ways of his college coach, Bob Knight. Didn’t go well. Dallas started the season 1-23 and finished 13-69. When it was over, Sund was gone too. GRADE: F.
♦ 6. Doug Collins (Detroit, 1995-98): Collins had a decent coaching run in Chicago but couldn’t win a title. He was replaced by his assistant, some guy named Phil Jackson. Collins lost in the first round twice in two seasons with the Pistons, then was fired in year three following a 21-24 start. GRADE: C.
♦ 7. Alvin Gentry (Detroit, 1998-00): Gentry is having a great run with Phoenix in the Western Conference finals. That wasn’t the case in Detroit. He mostly was a well-traveled assistant (save for one season as head coach in Miami) before he took over for Collins. The Pistons missed the playoffs in that first year and made a quick postseason exit the following season. Gentry was gone after a 28-30 start in 2000-01. GRADE: C-minus.
♦ 8. George Irvine (Detroit, 2000-01): Sund’s time in Detroit clearly was running out (the Pistons hired Joe Dumars as vice president of basketball operations in 2000). Hiring Irvine didn’t help his cause. Irvine’s record: 46-60. After the season, he and Sund both were gone. GRADE: F.
Bob Weiss represented one of Sund’s biggest coaching mistakes.
Bob Weiss represented one of Sund’s biggest coaching mistakes.
♦ 9. Nate McMillan (Seattle, 2001-05): Sund inherited McMillan, who had taken over as interim the previous season. He kept him. The Sonics made the playoffs in two of the next four seasons and won 52 games and a division title in 2004-05. But after the season, he opted to leave for Portland, taking a reported five-year, $30 million offer over Seattle’s four-year, $18 million deal. GRADE: B.
♦ 10. Bob Weiss (Seattle, 2005-06): The only explanation is that when McMillan left, Sund went insane. Bob Weiss? He was fired after 30 games (13-17). GRADE: F.
♦ 11. Bob Hill (Seattle, 2006-07). A step up from Weiss. But not by much. Totals: 53-81 in a season and a half, no playoffs. Neither Hill nor Sund (who had several draft mistakes in Seattle) survived. GRADE: D.
Many believe Sund had it right when he said the Hawks needed a new coach to take them to the next level. To find that guy, he’ll need a bit of a turnaround.

Someone on cbssportsline.com could not have said this any better….
“The Atlanta Spirit group are just complete and utter morons. You trade a draft pick for cash. If you can not afford the franchise, then give it up. I am calling on all Atlanta Hawks fans to boycott the team if they do not resign Joe Johnson. Rick Sund is just a puppet for the ownership group and I hope that he is proud of himself. The Atlanta Spirit wonders why people do not support the team – it is because of moves like this that show that they do not care about winning. They are soo far over their heads with the Hawks and Thrashers that they do not know which way is up.”

I don’t know a whole lot about basketball, or the NBA draft for that matter, but I have enjoyed following the Hawks for the last several years now but what I think is kind of disappointing is that the team is one solid move away from having a true championship contender, but they don’t have the FO or the ownership to get it done. If we did a sign & trade to lose JJ, then did the same to get one of the big time bigs on the FA market this offseason, & slipped Joe Crawford into JJ’s spot, I think this team instantly improves from where it was last year, which was pretty good in it’s own right.
I don’t really understand the uproar about the draft tonight though. If the Hawks really targeted Jordan Crawford as the player they wanted, did they not really just make a move to get the guy they wanted AND get some cash back in the process? Sure, when you’re talking about our ownership, it reaks of being cheap, but let’s be honest about the likelihood of any of the bigs we could’ve drafted there ever being more than a last ditch option off the bench. If we had a FO we trusted, I think I really wouldn’t mind the move, b/c it would tell me they got the guy they wanted and got cash to use later.
Who did we draft with our own 2nd round pick or did we trade it away as well?

The Hawks still have centers out there..I’m with RollBravesRoll, if the Hawks could get the player they really wanted and get cash in the process, whats really wrong with that?? Its not like other teams were jumping crazy for those centers either. We dont know what they looked like in the workouts. Sund and the ASG has there reasons for doing what they did. Lets just play it all the way out and see exactly what they had up their sleeves. Chills rights are still up for grabs to get McGee, Siler is still available, and we have the possiblity to trade Bibby or Mo Evans or both with the extra cash we got from the #31 pick to add better bench players to our roster. So again, let’s just be patient and see what happens and if the ASG/Sund still make lousy decisions, than u can have at them!!

JJ, Jamal, Jordan Crawford, and Mo Evans on the same team? I guess they plan on using Mo at sf AGAIN. Idiots. Mo is a 2, not a 3. I like Jordan Crawford, but we still need 2 sf’s(starter/backup) and a backup center and the draft is over. Darn! Maybe we plan on moving Jamal? Or maybe the FO knows that Joe is leaving? Idk??

These guys take frugality to a new level.
Nevertheless, if you can get 3mil for a project second ROUND pick, you have at leased maximize your return on that pick.
You have a legit young center…that deal makes since…we no that is not the case with the Hawks.
The word on Orton is…he is projected to have less skill than RandMo.
I would have taken the Kid out FSU or Whitehead with that pick. I will just have to see what these cheepies do in FA.
They drafted as though they are preparing for the post JJ era. I will have to mercifully wait to see how this all plays out.
@MsDee, I agree you in theory…I like the moxie you are showing…standing your ground on this draft. If IT wasn’t for the dubious past of ASG…I would feel the same way.
That what I like about this blog…doing the darkest hours…someone always step up to carry the torch for team. Keep doing yo thing folk…PEACE OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
