Atlanta Hawks: Could these draft prospects help the Hawks now?

Could this be Atlanta's next 'Nique? (Atoyia Deans, St. Pete Times)

Could this be Atlanta's next 'Nique? (Atoyia Deans, St. Pete Times)

Before you can begin to examine the players the Hawks will consider drafting with the No. 24 pick on Thursday, you first must understand the competing philosophies at play.

As they wind down their draft preparations, GM Rick Sund, assistant GM Dave Pendergraft, Hawks scouts and L.D. must decide if they want to draft a player with a skill (or skills) that can help the team now but with limited upside, or take a prospect who likely won’t see minutes early but could develop later into a good NBA player. The Hawks are compiling a list of players in each pool.

“First, we have to decide which way to go,” Pendergraft said. He declined to name names but he and others provided enough clues for me to make some educated guesses. I fully expect to be hated on when the Hawks inevitably don’t draft any of these guys.

Once the Hawks determine their strategy, they then have to figure out which prospects are likely to be there when they pick. Considering the league office had a tough time completing its list of 15 players to invite to the “green room” in New York, you know how much guesswork goes into the Hawks figuring out which players will be there at No. 24.

“Do we figure out who is drafting who?” Pendergraft said. “Or do we try to continue to evaluate the players on tape and do background info on them? You want to know exactly who is taking who, but you are not going to get it [down] to the team anyway.” He said the Hawks have done “a bit of both” as draft day approaches.

Pendergraft was optimistic about the depth of the draft during the college season but grew pessimistic early in the postseason draft process. With the draft a couple days away, he’s somewhere in between.

“I think we will be glad to get a guy we are happy to have,” he said.

A look at the players that could be available at No. 24 that the Hawks might consider, from among the “could help them now” pool. I’ll have stuff on the long-term potential guys in a later blog post.

NBA skill now

Gani Lawal, F, 6-9, Georgia Tech

“One thing I think always translates from the college game to NBA is rebounding,” Pendergraft said, and that explains Atlanta’s interest in Lawal despite his projection to play power forward, where the Hawks have Smoove, Al and Zaza as options.

Lawal ranked 25th in the NCAA in pace-adjusted rebounds, according to Draftexpress.com. Lawal ranks seventh in that stat among sure-fire and possible first rounders, behind DeMarcus Cousins, Cole Aldrich, Larry Sanders, Hassan Whiteside, Al-Farouq Aminu, and Jarvis Varnado.

Trevor Booker, F, 6-7, Clemson

“Booker is a heck of a rebounder,” Pendergraft said. “Both of them [Booker and Lawal] have the physical presence. They are not going to get crushed.” Booker projects as a power forward and is undersized for the position, but according to NBADraft.net he “shows the ability to step out on the perimeter and knock down the jumper, even showing three point range at times” and “can also use his handle and quickness to blow by bigger defenders.”

So perhaps Booker could provide the Hawks more than just rebounding.

Jordan Crawford, G, 6-4, Xavier

Crawford canceled his workout with the Hawks and Pendergraft isn’t confident he will still be available at No. 24. DraftExpress.com has has Crawford going 27th to the Nets, so it’s possible Atlanta will have a shot at him. If he’s there and the Hawks want a scorer, Crawford might be the guy.

“He’s like a miniature version of Jamal [Crawford],” Pendergraft said.

Says DraftExpress: “[H]e is efficient in virtually every situation, and shouldered a heavy load for Xavier, but his inability to get to the foul line prevents him from standing out as much as he probably could. The second most efficient player in our rankings overall (1.014 PPP), Crawford gets fouled on his 5.1% of his shots (3rd last). A highly ranked catch and shoot player with or without a hand in his face, Crawford’s inability to draw fouls renders him as a below average finisher at .993 PPP.”

Dominique Jones, 6-4, G, South Florida

Jones, whose stock reportedly is on the rise, is another scorer: DraftExpress says he’s “both a high usage and high efficiency scorer, which is a rare combination to find.”

Pendergraft said Jones gets his points less by shooting well and more by getting to the basket. “He will find a way to score,” is how Pendergraft put it. “He’s such a great ballhandler. He’s so strong. He can get in the paint, and anytime you can get a guy in the paint [on] the dribble-drive, something good happens.”

Terrico White, 6-3, G, Ole Miss

Whits is a scorer like Jones but a better shooter. “Terrico White eventually is going to be a good enough shooter that the coach is going to run plays to get him open,” Pendergraft said. DraftExpress knocks White’s aggressiveness: “For a player with such excellent physical tools, you would have liked to see him get to the rim or draw more fouls than he was able to at Ole Miss.”

dmaryb Bush did not do anything but establish a ho chin minh trail using Ollie north and a plane that crashed at the U.S. border loaded with cocaine.. His son left the border open and gave trucks the right to deliver anywhere in the us with out search. There was a time when the’d “drop” a trailer and then ameican truckers would pick it up and deliver it where it needed to go.

In a word no. Every body recognizes we have an illegal immigration and drug/human trafficking problem. Bush is not longer president so we cant expect leadership from him. Obama is numb to making a strong leadership position because he sold so he looks the other way. Problem persists. NO LEADERSHIP.

Doc, CP makes 14-16 mil over the next 3-4 seasons. That’s a bargain in my mind. Also, if you look at the Lakers, Boston, and other contenders, all of their money are put in the first 6-7 guys, and the other 5-6 guys consist of veteran minimums and rookie contracts. So if Joe, Josh, and CP takes up $43 million (Crawford comes off book next year and either takes a pay cut or leaves), that would actually be LOWER than majority of the contenders big three. Add up Kobe, Gasol, and Odum (or even Bynum), or Howard, Lewis, and Carter, or Billups, Anthony, and Martin. And we won’t even talk about the salary of Boston’s big three. However, Joe, Josh, and CP3 would be younger than all of those trios, while still being cheaper. Also that starting five would still be cheaper than either of the teams who made it to the conference finals this season.

If you look at the 2 most successful NBA franchises, the Celtics and Lakers, you’ll see that their success, luck, or what have you, is tied to them having a solid foundation. Having a solid foundation means having solid ownership. We probably have more owners making decisions right now than the Lakers and Celtics have had throughout their entire combined existence.

And our owners have probably spent more money on lawyers, accountants and court costs, fighting each other, than they have on running the Hawks. Our owners are not only fighting each other in court, they fought their own GM and forced him out, after siding with their HC, then got rid of the very HC they sided with.

Just like the team won in later yrs in spite of Woodson, both Woodson and the team were able to accomplish what they did in spite of ownership. The fact that ownership has gotten into an expensive and embarrassing legal fight over wanting to make decisions that should have been left to the GM they hired to make these decisions, says just about everything that needs to be said about the overall stupidity and incompetence of our ownership.

People, Chris Paul is not walking through this door get over it. We messed that up with Marvin “the bust” Williams. As for the draft, open your minds to the business aspect of NBA basketball combined with the talent and abilities needed to succeed on the basketball court. You can not get a PF or C on the open market for the same price that you could get a SG. Case in point, Dirk, Amare, Bosh, and even Boozer will make more than Gay and Johnson on the open market this summer. You do not get many chances to get a rotation PF or C for less than a rotation combo guard. It would make absolutely no sense for the Hawks to select a rotation combo guard over a rotation SF,PF, or C. We don’t want to spend money on the open market to build the team so this is the next best way. Paying a big man a little over $1,000,000 a year is a steal no matter how you put it.

As for Mr. Cunningham, maybe I did not understand the concept of cap holds which still makes no sense to me, but other than that my model was correct.

I wish the Hawks would at least make an attempt to pry the rights of Tiago Splitter away from the Spurs. I’d give them our first round pick and Josh Childress for the current Spanish League MVP.

Grandad, I guess we see things a little differently. Because I haven’t seen anything (aside from the injuries) that would suggest Horford is a better character guy than Boozer. Actually, Sloan said one of the reason he liked Boozer so much was because he was a high character guy. And even in the locker rooms (Utah and Cleveland), I’ve never heard of him giving problems. The only problem that came up with Boozer was when they said he ‘promised’ he would sign an extension with Cleveland and went out to Utah. But who could blame him for going to play for Jerry Sloan. So I’d take Boozer over Horford, right now. And I think 25 NBA coaches would also.

So I say this and ignore you the rest of the way out.

America is not doing so well right now in many aspects. We face some serious issues that we would hope our leadership would have the backbone to face. IT AINT HAPPENING. In Obama we looked for Jesus and found George Bush the 4th. He has done nothing to secure our borders or protect the rights of the “AMERICAN” PEOPLE. The only transfer of wealth has been from the lower middle class to the illegal aliens. The american poor are not only losing their low paying jobs to illegal aliens but at the same time they are forced to fund food stamps through taxes for the poor illegal aliens that come here from Mexico who are using the exponential plant baby strategy. California has went bankrupt and Arizona is over whelmed and Obama looks the other way. I too voted for obama because I had the audacity of hope. But like the hawks season, at some point reality sinks in and youve been had. . .

Knowledge for Quest

Again, who has done that? These problems began 6000 years ago. Not, 18 months ago!

As you so eloquently and intellectually put it out there? Who is the blame for all this?
Who do you personally, blame?

I blame, the, ” Father of the Lie”. “The Ruler of this System of Things!”. Saþan the Devil!
In the Garden of Eden, Satan the Devil, deceived the Woman and tricked her into being disobedient to the
Rule of Law! And, in kind, Adam (who was neither deceived nor tricked), He chose to join with her in her sin!

The wages of SIN is DEATH! Thereby, we all grow old, get sick and die!
But, GOD loved the World so much, he gave his only begotten son and now we have the
HOPE of redemption and a resurrection to Live Restored.

Here’s my point: the Devil, being the sore loser that he is! He is testing us and our Faith in GOD!
Our innate desire to please him and serve him and to do his WILL!

The Devil, threw down the gauntlet and thereby, Challenged God’s Universal Sovereignty and
consequently, GOD’S Right to Rule over his OWN creation – ManKind!

I don’t know about you – Quest for Knowledge? But, if I were a betting Man and had to choose sides with:

Whom has the Universal Sovereignty? – (The Right to Rule over Mankind?)

I’LL PUT MY MONEY on GOD! Every Time! So, no, I don’t look to MAN-KIND’s Government to bring about what only GOD can do:
Deliver True Peace & Security around the World! For once and for all times!

In the book of Matthews: Jesus delivered to his disciples a model prayer, when they asked him,
“How do we then pray?”. … Thy Kingdom ( synonymous with government) come..
Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven!”

We just want peace man! GOD never gave Man the Power to do that!

So, no, I never voted for Obama or any other Man! I voted for God’s Son – Jesus!
He is my sacrificial Lamb, My Truth and My Way!
Good Luck on your Quest for Knowledge!

I know the Chris Paul rumors are all wishful thinking, but Hoops Hype makes it sound like if the owner can’t sell the Hornets, he will have to drop Paul. They are at 72 million already with only 10 guys signed. So if it’s all about cap room, how about moving Crawford and Mo (both expiring contracts)? They have Collisson but not a great SG. I bet if we had Paul, Joe would want to come back. He wants to leave to play with a superstar, so problem solved.

Truth-serum,

You said this: “I dont think Horford is quite the player or physical specimen Carlos is. Not close.”

For once we somewhat agree. Although, I’d say that Al is every bit the physical specimen that Carlos is, I DO think Boozer is a much more developed player than Horford. He has a cleverness to his offense that Al would do well to copy.

However, I’d contend that they are closer than you may think.

By the end of Boozer’s third year, his career averages were:

14.4 pts, 9.3 reb.

Al is at 12.0 and 9.6

And in Boozer’s first three years he took 2219 shots.

Al took 2109, over 100 shots fewer, even though he played 22 MORE games than Boozer (due to an injury when he got to Utah). Meaning that his teams’ offense was less focused on him than Boozer’s.

Give Al another 110 shots over that period, and he’d be very close to Boozer’s third year numbers. And he’s already topping the rebound numbers.

Oh, and blocked shots?

Boozer at his third year: 0.6 / gm

Horford at his third year: 1.1 / gm

(So Horford is almost TWICE the shotblocker that Boozer is. I thought you’d want to know, since blocked shots mean so much to you.)

But the reasons Grandad would rather have Al are all the intangibles he brings, in addition to his production..

And I TOTALLY agree with Grandad about this.

At the trade deadline, I suggested going after Chris Douglas Roberts to give him a shot as our backup SF. And now he gets traded for a future second round pick? The Hawks have 2 second round picks next year (one from Houston), and we didnt want him? If he works out, great. If he doesn’t, we waste a second round pick. SMH at Rick Sund.

northcyde,

I’m with Ramon. i dont think N.O. want Josh, because they have David West.
Ramon,

I dont think the Hornets want Horford either. After this season, he will be a restricted free agent, and will probably get at least $10 mil. Hornets already have Okafor paying him over $10 mil. So unless they plan on trading Horford again, I dont think they want him.

The rumor is the Nets were offering Devin Harris and the #3 pick, and the Hornets turned it down. I think the Hornets have to be blown away by a trade offer to trade CP3.

CP3 is better than anyone on the Hawks. I would trade any Hawk for him, and depending on what other considerations were available, I might even be willing to include two core players (for example Joe and Al) for CP3.

Knowledge Quest

Sautee I wasnt sure what Grandad was saying in terms of who he preferred. I think Boozer is whey (is that really a word?) more physical in the paint than Al Booze is a power forward and not a center. I would rather compare him to Josh than Al. Al is our center. Thats important to consider when you compare stats because what is asked of a center and what is asked of a power forward is not the same. They dont perform of same office.

Compare Al to centers and Boozer to power forwards. I wouldd not like carlos as my center either.Hes strong and physical. Hes much stronger than Al.and would is a better power forward than al would be. If you talking between him and Al at the pf spot I think its a no brainer for boozer. If you are talking Josh and Boozer I think intangibles come in to play.

Defensively Josh was second among power forwards for defense, Al got 1 vote to be on the second team and Carlos got zero votes. Keep in mind this is how the 30 NBA coaches see the players defensive skills.

Yes you are right ” when it comes to the post”, Blocks and altered shots definitely are significant stats.

“I would love to have CP3 and JJ but I dont want to give up Teague, JSmoove, or Al Horford to…”

Id have to agree with you. Chris is a very good player but the game must revolve around him. Josh is a very good player who hasnt even begun to peak. With in two years he will be unstoppable, I believe. Hes pretty darn good now. Chris was a super star but injuries keep him from maximum performance. He like T-Mac in that regards. T-Mac was also a near super star but injuries kept him back to. So, NO, i do give up my nucleus to get a player who has a propensity for injuries. Al for Chris straight up or Josh for Chris straight up . maybeeeeeeee
