LD, second from right, moves over to Woody's spot (Curtis Compton/ccompton@ajc.com)
It wouldn’t be a bad thing in the larger sense if LD is another Woody. In the aftermath of the recent postseason disappointment, it’s easy to forget Woody led the Hawks to one of their better seasons after helping them rise up from their status as laughingstocks. But Rick Sund said the Hawks needed “another voice,” after all, so there’s some understandable skepticism when they hired Woody’s right-hand man to be the “new” voice.
Clearly Atlanta believes LD offers something distinct from Woody. The Hawks hired him after rejecting not just Woody but his entire program. Promoting his lead assistant means they don’t think LD got much of a chance to put his stamp on that program. And the Hawks are telling you that not only do they expect LD’s way to be better than Woody’s way, but that he’s the guy to guide them to the next level even though he’s never been in the head coach’s seat before.
Anybody making snap judgments about the legitimacy of those views is just guessing. Sund and ASG made their choice. LD gets his shot to win over skeptics. At some point it will become clear if he’s the right choice.
I talked to some players this weekend, and all of them said they expect LD’s approach to be different than Woody’s. Drew often ran the second-team offense in practice and was said to deploy creative sets, with one player describing them as a “fun” departures from the isolations. Another player said when things went badly for the Hawks, LD tended to be more of an “encourager” than a “screamer” and focused his energy on laying out a detailed plan for how the Hawks can get better.
The players have better insight into LD than the rest of us, and so it’s significant that he enjoys wide support among them. But they can’t be sure how Drew the assistant will work out as Drew the head coach. His relationships with players will be tested. Now LD has the final say on how the run the team, including playing time and touches, and players inevitably aren’t going to like some of his decisions.
It’s probably not much different than most real-life workplaces when your direct boss becomes the “big boss.” It happened to me at a previous job. I knew that when my supervisor became the department’s boss our relationship would necessarily change. Where once he would go into his boss’s office as my advocate, and sometimes privately agree with my gripes, suddenly I was griping to someone else about his decisions. We talked every day when he was my direct supervisor; when he became the department head and had wider responsibilities, sometimes the explanations came down through the chain of command, and sometimes not at all.
I knew that when he was promoted my boss had to put some of that “command distance” between us. I’m not saying I always liked it but I accepted the circumstances and did my job. It’s not an exact analogy, I know, but Hawks players now have to do much the same with Drew. It’s part of being a professional.
That raises another important point. It’s not just ASG, Sund and LD who are under pressure. The players have a lot to prove, too. It’s fair to critique Woody’s strategies, his management of the team, and his failure to bring along Rook’. But, in what’s probably a common NBA tale, the players whom Woody treated like pros and gave some degree of say in their working conditions eventually let him down (and that’s before you even get into the issues with his roster, which is another blog altogether).
The players credited Woody with creating a loose atmosphere that made it enjoyable for them to come to work but then they didn’t get serious when it was time to do so. Woody backed off from the long, hard and frequent practices players didn’t like and in the end they didn’t work as hard as they should. Woody gave them on-court freedom (especially J.J.) and instead of taking that trust and becoming a free-flowing offensive team, they became a selfish “get mine” kind of team–and resisted Woody’s efforts to get them to share the ball.
Now Hawks players get a replacement for Woody whom they know and like. The new voice in charge is a familiar one and the internal hire causes fewer disruptions and less uncertainty. As one player said, now it’s up to him and his teammates to support Drew by getting on board with his program, respecting his decisions even if they don’t like them and sacrificing for the team.
Otherwise, no matter if LD draws up better plays, holds all guys accountable and develops the next Rook’, he might end up just like Woody did in the end.

Very interesting, good article. I’m a little nervous about the whole situation. I think they needed an entirely new voice. I kind of doubt a first-time head coach can take them to the “next level”. Drew sounds like a great assistant. Wish they kept him there and hired Casey but, we’ll see.

“Another player said when things went badly for the Hawks, LD tended to be more of an “encourager” than a “screamer” and focused his energy on laying out a detailed plan for how the Hawks can get better.”
This sentence can be used to clarify what went wrong so many time under Woody.
An example?
When we were getting burned due to Woody’s insistence in playing the switching D against teams that exposed and exploit it, I am definitively sure that Woody’s sole reaction was to shout for more effort instead of looking into himself, acknowledge that the switching D sucked against certain types of adversaries and that it was up TO HIM to chance things.
The same applies for our offensive droughts.
Woody was a coach with 1 plan and 1 plan alone and his only answer for a failure was probably to preach “MORE EFFORT”.

Who cares the that he and Woodson arent twins? An apple never fall far from the tree. He will now be under Woodson’s shadow.
His mentor has taught him well and he is charged not to match woodson but to exceed him. There is the challenge. The bar is at 53 wins and getting to the second round of the play offs.
For this to be a improvement the hawks will have to advance to the semi-finals with effectively the same squad. Then I can say clearly this was a move in the right direction.
Otherwise we are just pissing in the wind, and Sund not only looks like an idiot but has an advance degree in idiot-ology.
Finally, all bets are off if the Hawks get a much needed starting center because that would be a clear upgrade of the tools woodson lacked in his arsenal.

Woodsen got out at the perfect time, the acme of his Hawk coaching career. No one in his or hers right mind really think the Hawks can go much further than they have. Woodsen will eventually get a good contract somewhere, he has the growth record to support it.
The main reason Drew was hired was to give them a shot at signing Joe Johnson. It is that simple. However, he has paid his dues and I wish him the best.

MC, so it sounds like Woody expected some passes out of those iso sets… given that the players didn’t repsond to his request to share the ball at the same time describing the offense as iso-heavy.
Let’s hope the players recognize the difference in the new relationship as you described in your real-world example. That would show a tremendous amount of maturity if they recognize that a head coach has different responsibilities (and pressures) than an assistant. Screw the schemes and strategies, Drew needs to nurture a locker-room leader so that his is not the lone voice demanding excellence and effort. Going from a 50+ win team to a truly elite team will require a peer leader or two to hold others accountable.

Ain’t no might about it…he will end up like Woody.
If Woody created a loose and fun place to come to work and gave them space to create the kind of offense they wanted and the leaders of the team choose to be selfish and disrespect Woody by not working with him…then we got major issues with the player leadership.

i don’t know if LD can take the Hawks to the next level, but there are a few things that can make this squad a better T-E-A-M.
1. Do not constantly switch on defense.
2. Do not constantly run an isolation offense.
3. Develop the young players from the beginning of the season to help in the end of the season.
4. Be able to adjust correctly during a game.
If LD can get this Hawks team to do these 4 simple things, he will make this team better and supersede Woody. And make the team much more enjoyable to watch!

I’ve been reading all of these posts on different blogs about Joe and how screwed we’d be without him. I dont necessarily see it like that. Mike Bibby and Joe Johnson do not like contact and settled for jumpshots alot. It costs us several games late. I dont care who or what combination of players, but find me a PG and SG that dont mind contact and putting the ball on the floor and taking it strong to the rack for higher percentage shots and more fouls on the opponent/free throw trips for us and I’d take it. When we combine that new element of the offense, along with better movement on offense (we cant be ANY worse in that dept, right?), Horford, Smoove, Marvin, Crawford, Evans, Teague and whatever we can get from the draft and FA ….and we should be better.

…and a reality check for folks that cannot believe Drew got the job.
If Drew wins one game in the 2nd round of the playoffs, he has done what Woody did not.
If he gets out of the 2nd round, he’s done what no Hawks coach has done in the past 35 years or so.
Several big name coaches are guys that got a shot when their head coach wasn’t good enough and they needed someone else to take them to the next level. The Lakers did it after winning a championship with Paul Westhead (Hello Pat Riley). The Bulls did it after consistently losing to the Pistons in the playoffs (Calling Phil Jackson). The Knicks sor of tried it with (Hang on to that leg, Jeff van Gundy. Even the coveted Avery Johnson got a chance after the mad offensive genius, Don Nelson, got madder with the Mavs.
All that said, he got 2 years with an option for a 3rd. Not exactly a lifetime contract.
As a season ticket holder, I’m neither jumping out a window nor putting my 401k on the Hawks to win it all. For the moment, I’m more interested in how he fills out the staff, who’s on the summer league roster, and what the final roster looks like. These are things that will happen before Larry Drew gets a notch in his official NBA coaching record.
In the meantime, if you want to worry about something coach Drew has controlled, check out his camp page.

The rumors are true. I did in fact want Casey as coach, but the ASG wanted Larry Drew.
However, let’s talk about something more important:
We SWEPT the Celtics in the REGULAR SEASON series. Why are you all not HAPPY? A team’s success is based on regular season record. Boston is on the verge of WINNING a CHAMPIONSHIP, meaning we are technically the best team in the league since we swept them.
Also, given this fact, we are maintaining our belief that the REFS were a primary factor in our losses to Orlando in the 2nd round. They were very biased and unfair — our playing and effort were definitely where they needed to be in order for us to win the series.
Best,

Not that I am representing these few disgruntled fans about our new coach hiring, but perhaps a reason why the “knee-jerk” reaction still lingers points to Sund characterization of why the coach change was necessary. He said the Hawks needed a “new voice”. To some fans that statement translated into something new, something bold, and something completely different; a well-respected coach (around the league) capable of taking us to that next and final championship level. Maybe these disgruntled fans feel that our recent hired coach does not fit this bill. But from a qualification stand point we all know this was a good match. The reaction from the media and around the league is that Coach Drew has paid his dues and is more then qualified for the job. So really this lingering argument is not about Drew qualifications because he certainly has that; then perhaps this is about Sund misleading statement of a “new voice” for a coaching change. I will admit he gave us all a “hard-on” for a “big-splash” coach selection that didn’t apparently happen. Maybe again this exposes discord between Sund understanding of change and the ASG understanding of change as Sund apparently got overruled.

Teague said he was going home for a week then coming back and putting in some work to get better. Marvin on the other hand mentioned nothing about what he was going to do this summer to become a better player. I know just because he didn’t say it on the video it doesnt mean he wont be working on his game but it sure would have been nice to hear him say something basketball related. section 303, Woodson has lost like 13 of 14 to Orlando, how can u not blame that on coach Woody?
Other than the miracle last second dunk-in by Josh Smith in the regular season everybody knew this was going to be a sweep. His strategy trying to defend them obviously hasn’t been working, especially Dwight Howard.

And for those claiming 53 wins or else…Cleveland had 66 wins last year, 61 wins this year. How did that work out for them? Boston only had 50 wins this season, but look where they are now. It’s not just about regular season wins. It’s also about playoff performance.
What if the Hawks only win 46 games, and then they make it to the second round where they lose 4-1, with the 4 losses being close? Is that an improvement?
The playoff collapse was not all Woody’s fault. But that’s why the shelf-life of a coach in the NBA is so short (unless you’re HOF quality). Because the same things that a player likes about you, will be the same thing that gets you fired eventually, once the players tune you out.

Here is my take on the hiring of Drew. First off, since LD has 6 years with the Hawks and the players like him, it won’t work out unless on the first day of practice he sets the tone of how it is going to be, my way or don’t play! Somehow i don’t think he will set the rules down hard with current roster as he doesn’t want to rub players feelings and since he is a rookie head coach there will be mistakes made dealing with the players attitudes and work ethic. D. Casey would have been a better head coach as would bring in a breath of fresh air and new attitude different from the current situation. plus he had head coach experience so not a rookie head coach. good luck to LD, would have been better if he had only been with the Hawks for a year or two, not six years.

Mike Cunningham, you hit the nail on the head about ‘Touche also being Knowledge Quest. One guy here goes to all the sports blogs and posts under about 20 to 30 different names but you can easily tell its the same person. Why does AJC allow people to do this ? It seems like one id per ISP could be enforced. Lame indeed.

MC,
Great follow up piece on the hiring of Larry Dreww. Based on the variuos media reports it appears that the three primary challenges that the new incumbant head coach will face:
1. Team chemistry. The often used but little understood term covers a multitude of sins but Charles Barkley expressed it best in the context of the Hawks two years ago when he said that the (Hawks) are going to have to make up their mind as to wwther or not (it) was Joe’s team or Josh’s team.
2.Joe’s return and or his “new”role. I am agnostic regarding Joe’s return to the team. If there is a new sheriff intown, the question becomes can Joe adjust to not being the sole/major focus of the offense? My belief is that had he not gotten all of the touches over the last few years ,he might not have acheived All-Star status.
3. The roster. There is talent but has it been utilized effectively/ And is there enough to compete in the NBA of 2011 where there is a tremendous opportunity to advance because of the proable decline/weakening of several of the contendors,ie Boston.
Again, I wish Coach Drew a long and successful tenure and am looking forward to an exciting season next year.

We needed change I’m not sure how much change we’ll get. This team clearly quit in the orlando series. I don’t see much changing if you don’t shake up the roster. I would not blow it up but I would make changes. I would trade smooth and let JJ go by sign and trade. This team needs a new look.

Hamp, Orlando gave up against Boston, as did Cleveland. So should Orlando go trade their two best players? Josh was clearly the MVP of this past season. And its funny that this season just happened to be one of the best seasons in franchise HISTORY. So you’re suggesting trading one of the most influential players in the Hawks last 15 season, because of one play off series, where he still managed to have the best numbers on the team? Good luck with that idea.

This is why the Hawks won’t make it to the Finals no time soon. Larry Drew maybe a good coach eventually, but this team needs a seasoned hand to get to the next level. As the assistant, he could focus on being the rah rah guy, not the guy who is front of the camera now. He is now got to make the calls. He gets to have the final say. When you are in charge, sometimes you have to be the bad guy. Players love to vent their frustrations to the assistant. The assistant isn’t viewed as the bad guy. Drew has never being the guy. If this team was 19 – 63, sure give him a try. But this team needs a coach who has the experience, a.k.a Avery Johnson, Jeff Van Gundy, Rudy T., Byron Scott, or Lawrence Frank.
That being said, the Hawks mgt just showed us by hiring Larry Drew that they are not interested in winning.

ILL-LOGICAL-your comments were very LOGICAL. With absolutely no effort whatsoever to deal with the regression of MWilliams and MBibby, and the refusal to even try and develop and/or take advantage of PG JTeague’s talents, especially his DEF talents, means a lot of our talent was not utilized effectively. Also, relying on a 6-7 man rotation is another indication that our talent and depth weren’t utilized effectively.
I’m a firm believer that losing JJ won’t be as devastating as some seem focused on believing. His DEF and versatility will be missed far more than his OFF, especially if we are able to sign a reliable FA replacement. Getting more OFF and DEF from the PG position will definitely go a long way towards compensating for his potential loss. Getting more OFF production from MWilliams will also lessen the impact of his potential loss.
Committing to running and maintaining an uptempo OFF, upgrading our half court OFF, and adding more options will definitely lessen the impact of his loss. Bottom line, by spreading the OFF wealth and getting more players involved, getting more consistent bench production and being less dependent on the overall production of one player, will make the Hawks a better overall team in the long run.
To accomplish this, RSund has to sign or trade for a SG that’s capable of playing good DEF and averaging 14-16PPG. Then HC LDrew has to get an average of 12-13PPG and 6-8APG from Teague, and get Marvin back up to his 2007/2008 14PPG average. Just by accomplishing those very manageable tasks, we will have made up JJ’s 21.3PPG. Getting 12PPG from JTeague is 3PPG more than we got from Bibby last yr. If we add the 4PPG increase from Marvin to the 3PPG from Teague over Bibby, we get a 7PPG total increase. By adding that 7PPG to the projected 14PPG from JJ’s replacement, you’ve replaced JJ’s 21.3PPG scoring average. And none of that put’s a lot of pressure on any one player.
With a commitment to consistently running, we can expect more efficient OFF production from JSmith, MEvans, JCrawford and AHorford. During Bibby’s tenure with the Hawks, how many of you can say you ever saw him get a rebound or an outlet pass and go coast to coast. How many times can any of you actually say you saw him penetrate into the lane and dish? His lack of speed, quickness, athleticism, and inability to penetrate and finish, made him the NBA’s easiest PG to cut off and keep out of the lane, even on those rare occasions when he bothered to do.
With Teague at PG, DEF’s will have to commit to keeping him out of the lane, and he’ll definitely present a constant challenge to teams’ transition DEF. And unlike Bibby, he can’t be easily pressured and forced to give the ball up and start the OFF outside of the 3pt line. His DEF ability will create more steals and deflections and make it harder for teams to initiate their OFF and feed the post.
We’ve all seen Teague use his speed, quickness and athleticism defending fast breaks and on pick and rolls to fight over screens and recover to his man quickly enough to challenge or even block his man’s shot attempt. THAT NEVER HAPPENED ONCE WITH BIBBY.
Under HC Larry Drew, the players will be encouraged and required to rely much much more on the team concept, rather than the team relying more on one player, like they did under MWoodson. And I believe that will be the case with or without JJ.
So for all of you glass half empty prognosticators who feel the need to predict nothing but negative minded doom and gloom for the Hawks, just because your beloved Woodson wasn’t rehired and/or the HC you wanted wasn’t hired, I hope you have a miserable off season with your negativism.

KB, your statement is funny because neither of the coaches you mentioned has experience as winning the NBA Finals. And all of the coaches you mentioned were fired from their last gigs. So how are you sure they have a better chance to win a title in Atlanta than Larry Drew? If Van Gundy couldn’t win with Ewing, Yao, McGrady, and others how you expect him to win with the Hawks? Rudy T, is the only one who has won, and he retired from the LAKERS because of health issues. So I doubt he would give up a gold mind like the Lakers to turn around and come work for ASG. Byron Scott isn’t any better than Mike Brown or Woodson to be honest. If Woody had J Kidd at point guard, he may would’ve lasted longer in the playoffs also. And Scott came out of the east the 2-3 years when it was easy to see the best team in the east wouldn’t even have been a top four seed in the West (LA, Sac, Portland, SA), so he didn’t have any competition stopping him.

Ken, if the Hawks lose JJ ( I hope they don’t), I think the best model would be for them to look at Houston’s make up. Atlanta has more talent at every position than Houston, so if they’re able to come close to that make up, they could easily still be a top 4 seed next season.

Pace Mannion, I watch the games, that’s why I do not put much of the blame on Woodson. The players quit in that series. Poor effort. Made me wish we did not have such p#ssy owners. There are several owners in the league who would have gone in the locker room and tore the place up, if their team gave that kind of effort.
I think the Hawk players should be reminded everyday of how they just rolled over and died in that series.

If we can get 75% of the production out of Jeff Teague that Boston gets from Rondo, we will take some stopping. At the end of the day, the point guard runs the team. Teague can block shots, rebound , take it hard to the rim, dish, has jets and is starting to to develop a nice little floater. Just imagine the player he could be with a consistent jump shot and some confidence from actually playing.

KB, you said you learned you need to do it the right way, similar to the Falcons. However the Falcons aren’t going by their success with experience, but instead with a first time GM who was a scout, and a first time head coach who was an assistant coach his entire career. So in the head coach the Hawks are going the same way the Falcons have gone about their process. And I just think if either one of those coaches you mentioned were that great, they would be employed elsewhere. Reinsdorf knows about winning championships, after all he’s won 6 of them. Yet he still chose to go with a coach who had never been a head coach before. Pat Riley knows about winning championships, yet he also (for the second time) went with an assistant who had never been a head coach before. Matter of fact, when Van Gundy was first hired by a PLAY OFF TEAM in New York, he had never been a head coach in his career, and to make it worse he never even played in the NBA. Avery Johnson took over a 55+ win team without having head coaching experience on his resume. So all of these other teams have done the exact same thing the Hawks did with hiring Drew, yet you think the Hawks did an injustice?

Ramon, I am not disagreeing with you about the lack of qualified coaches out there. I just think the Hawks could have done better.

KB, believe it or not, for the last three/four seasons the Hawks have been a successful team! There have only been 4 teams in the East who have made the playoffs each of the last three seasons. And the Hawks are one of those seasons. And each season the Hawks were in the bottom half of the league in team payroll. So believe it or not there are a lot of small market team who are looking at the Hawks as a MODEL to build towards. Unless you have owners who are willing to spend $90 mil for 2-3 seasons, you can’t expect a franchise that hasn’t been in the play offs in 9 seasons, to all of a sudden become title contenders. Its a process. And the Hawks have been successful at the first part of the process. Everyone points at San Antonio for the model, but forget to remember that the Spurs were a playoff team BEFORE Duncan came. And the only reason they won the draft lottery, was because David Robinson had a season ending injury.
As I said Avery Johnson, Van Gundy, Van Gundy, Franks, Spoelstra and a few others took on playoff teams that were trying to take a next step to championships, and they each did good afterward. As I said, do I think Drew would’ve been my first choice, no he wouldn’t have. But at the same time I wouldn’t not hire him just because he’s never been a head coach before.

Section 303,
Although I am not a Woody fan, I agree that the players quit on him. Regardless of whether you like a coach or not, there is no acceptable excuse for not giving maximum effort. And that’s another reason why Sund needs to tweak the roster. Guys are too complacent. But in the end, this is a player’s league. So the owner going into the locker room and raising hell probably wouldn’t make a difference.

Comparing LD to Mike Smith makes no sense. 2 diff organizations for when Smith got the hire here. LD has not been part of anything special in the NBA. Yes, he has paid his dues as a lifetime assistant, but at age 52, how does that state that this guy is now ready to lead his own program? What has he been doing the past 6 years? Does anyone know exactly what LD’s role on the team has been? Is it offense? or defense?
Saying that, I will stop the LD bashing and let him prove himself.
But this whole next-step-progression forward is a complete joke. Sund never had any intention to bring in a top coach. He looked for cheap and has that tells me he has no idea how to build a championship contender. Orlando and Boston and Cleveland have nothing to worry about next season as long as we stay with the same core.
We need to make a big move, we haven’t done it yet. The ASG has shown no one that next year will be any different than status quo. Apparently, that is good enough for them.
Very frustrating to watch this go on when the majority of us had this in the back of our mind already. I was okay with hiring anyone but LD in this ‘new voice’ move.
Good Luck Sund/ASG. I will have a hard time believing that a coach making 1.5M will be heard by anyone on this starting lineup. The will to improve is not being addressed.

RAMON-that is exactly the idea and team philosophy I’m talking about. When they lost Yao Ming, the players embraced the concept of relying on the team, rather than the team relying on one player(Yao Ming or TMcGrady). With so much more overall talent and versatility, we can accomplish so much more.
And for all of you crying, whining and predicting that the Hawks will never go anywhere without replacing All Star center AHorford with a so called legitimate center, just look at the facts. Cleveland and Orlando were the 2 top teams in the East, and each team has 2 so called legitimate 7′ centers. Even with DHoward being the NBA’s most dominant big man, and Cleveland having Shaq, the NBA’s biggest physical presence, their players and coaches are somewhere watching the playoffs, just like us.
The Lakers have 3 so called legitimate 7′ centers, 2 of which are starters. Yet, they’re trailing 3-2 to a Boston team who’s starting center is no taller, and less productive overall, than the Hawks All Star 6′10″ center AHorford. For those of you that lack the comprehensive ability, or the maturity and willingness to accept these facts, just remember the old saying, FOREST FOR THE TREES!!

Well said. I hope Larry Drew doesn’t do the buddy buddy thing, either.
I think there is a misconception, however, and I hope Woody learned from it.
Creating a loose atmosphere where it’s all fun, letting guys do their thing on offense…. this is not coaching.
Ask yourself what kind of guys have been winning NBA championships as head coaches. Ask yourself what kinds of guys have been the most prominent and longest tenured in this league. Larry Brown. Phil Jackson. Pat Riley. Chuck Daly. Gregg Popovich. Jerry Sloan.
Did those guys win by letting players have this much freedom on offense? Did they win by “creating a fun, loose atmosphere?” There is nothing wrong with making the game fun. It’s supposed to be fun. But this is professional sports. PROFESSIONAL. I like to have fun on my job as well, but I’ll be damned if doing the serious part and being a professional does not come first. It always has. It always will.

So should the guys wearing the jerseys.
Al Horford knows that. Joe Johnson knows that too, but he also has to acknowledge how much freedom he has been given. I’ve watched him take plays off, too. I’ve watched him make bad decisions on the court as well. I’ve also watched him pay attention to everything but the coach while in a timeout huddle.
Strap up and be that leader, or stop complaining about your teammates. Leading by example is only half the job. If you can’t do the other half (getting in their faces), then forfeit your position as team captain and teacher’s pet, and let a hungry young’un like Horford do the job. All you have to do now is score. Don’t like the sound of that? Then strap the “F” up and get it done.
Same goes for Josh Smith, it’s that time. Be the defensive quarterback and play that way ALL THE TIME, like Kevin Garnett does.

I think Al plays the center position pretty well, but there’s nothing wrong with the Hawks acquiring a true center if it allows your All-Star player to play the position he’s most efficient at.
I don’t like the idea of moving Josh to the 3, but he’d definitely be an upgrade from Marvin.
And with the Perkins-Horford comparison, smaller centers usually make up for their lack of height with either great strength or weight, and I think that’s where Perkins and Horford differ, as at least Perkins’ weight is comparable to the other “true centers” of the league, so he can hold his own in the paint. Horford is about 30-40 lbs lighter, so he’s probably not your best defensive option against the really big guys, because he’s more easily moved.
Also, i thought it was Rasheed Wallace rather than Perkins that kept Dwight Howard off his game during some of the Boston-Orlando series?

Too bad the Hawks have been put out by the Cavs and Magic in back-to-back years. Maybe after the smoke settles from free agency we can hope not to meet either of those teams in the playoffs next year! With JJ, the Hawks are now built to beat the Celtics but not really another other great team in a best-of-seven series. He only reason the Hawks can now beat the Celtics is because they can out run the Celtics. When it comes to half-course offense/defense, the Hawks cannot stand up to the Magic, the Cavs, the Spurs, the Lakers, the Nuggets, and probably not the Jazz either.
Like I said before, we’ll have to see what teams are looking like going into the season after the draft and FA are over but the Hawks cannot advance to the Eastern Conference Finals based on what they’ve got right now barring some major upsets in the other matchups.
Why is it so important for Horford to be a center for some fans? It’s not like people are saying take Horford off the court. But obviously, Horford cannot provide enough umph in the middle for the Hawks to show better against the elite teams. It’s not good enough to beat those teams some of the time. We need to beat those teams most of the team to be a champion. A large step to being that type of team is letting Horford dominate other PFs in the league instead of being hit and miss against the Cs of the league.

On the Perkins / Horford debate. Id lean toward Perkins because he stronger and more intimidating in the post than horffy in my opinion… I dont know How many of the coaches vote for Perkins as an All NBA defensive player but Horford only got 1 vote which i suspect was the loyal woodson so outside of that no coaches felt that Horford contributes much defensively. I wont argue with them.
BTW I think we can do better than Perkins too. I give him an easy nod over your boy….

It should be quite clear from the Orlando-Atlanta series and the Boston-Orlando series that Al Horford, as good a player as he is, cannot guard Dwight Horward the way Kendrick Perkins can. While Al is definitely the better player, from a defensive standpoint, Perkins is the better center. Also, Al maybe listed at 6′10, he’s not actually 6′10 and from watching Hawks and Celtics games, he is a little shorter and significantly smaller than Perkins.

OBRIEN-now that’s serious. I like the way you presented that. Perkins is a more physical defender, and presents more problems for the Laker player he’s defending. AHorford is quicker, faster and more athletic, and would improve the overall DEF in that manner. He’d certainly present more problems for the Lakers offensively and in the open court. He’s much better in pick and rolls than Perkins, and would give the Celtics more offensive options.
BIG RAY-After 6ys of seeing the negative effects of Woodson playing favorites and not holding certain players accountable, as well as the way it caused those same plays to lose respect for him, which ultimately got him fired, I just don’t see how LDrew will allow a repeat of that.
I also think the players who had issues with Woodson personally, and/or the way he did things, will try extra hard to prove that they weren’t the issue. Take JTeague for instance. Do you think he’s not going to do everything within his power to prove he’s an NBA ready PG that was the victim of Woodson’s unwillingness to give him a realistic chance to prove it? Don’t you think MEvans will try to prove that Woodson didn’t give him the opportunity to be more productive?
As far as Marvin is concerned, I can’t say if he’ll take the initiative to prove himself, or whether LDrew will have to light a fire under him to get it done, but either way he has to get it done. For the 1st time as a Hawk, MBibby will actually have to work hard to establish his roll on the team, and that is a good thing.
I think the HC change will be a major benefit for JSmith. He can now bury all of the past and on going issues, forgiveness and water under the bridge, whether real or imagined, that he and Woodson had going on, and start fresh. He, as well as all of our players, will have a chance to continue working with the HC they’ve respected and worked with as an assistant. However, the good thing is, they now know they won’t have to face the stubborn and inflexible attitude of resistance that was a previous issue. They won’t have to wonder if what they’ve agreed to, worked on, or think, will be ignored or out right rejected by a HC that’s too insecure and stubborn to listen. There will certainly be more communication under LDrew between coaching staff and players. And effective 2 way communication often eliminates resistance, misunderstanding, resentment and the subsequent loss of respect.

Given that the collective basketball IQ of this blog has tended to be above average, I cannot believe that anyone can be impressed by this hire. That is not to knock those that have long been Larry Drew fans, but history tells us that the odds favor his tenure to brief and underwhelming.
It simply is very difficult for one to find instances where promoted assistants have fared well with teams that did not feature at least one player on the roster bound for the Hall of Fame. There is no Ewing, no Jordan and Pippen, no Magic, Kareem and Worthy on this Hawks team.
This team needed a guy we could point to on paper and see the logic of the hire. This team needed a coach that has actually gotten a team to the Conference Finals. There were coaches with that kind of success on their resume on the market but they were not selected.
I’m sure Hawks fans all wish for Coach Drew to be successful and that this time next season we are all excited about the hire and focused solely on personnel issues.

********************
@ Ken Strickland . . . man, you sure do have high expectations for Teague. If you’re expecting Drew to turn him into a 12 – 13 ppg . . 6 – 8 assist guard, you’re pretty much expecting Teague to be a top10 PG in this league.
So I did a player search on basketball-reference.com. In the past 5 years, here are the guys who are 6 – 4 or shorter to average 12 ppg and 6 assists in a season , . and the # of times they did it ( in parenthesis ).
http://tinyurl.com/37839t9
Steve Nash ( 5 )
Baron Davis ( 5 )
Chris Paul ( 5 )
Dwyane Wade ( 5 )
Chauncey Billups ( 4 )
Andre Miller ( 4 )
Deron Williams ( 4 )
Gilbert Arenas ( 3 )
Raymond Felton ( 3 )
TJ Ford ( 3 )
Allen Iverson ( 3 )
Devin Harris ( 2 )
Kirk Hinrick ( 2 )
Derrick Rose ( 2 )
Mo Williams ( 2 )
Jason Kidd ( 2 )
Brevin Knight ( 1 )
Stephon Marbury ( 1 )
Mike Bibby ( 1 )
Jose Calderon ( 1 )
Sam Cassell ( 1 )
Tony Parker ( 1 )
Rajon Rondo ( 1 )
Rafer Alston ( 1 )
Jamal Tinsley ( 1 )
Russell Westbrook ( 1 )
You’re looking at about an average of 12 guards who are under 6 – 4 achieving this feat per year. Only 10 did it last year. This is NOT some simple feat you’re talkng about here. And it will be even harder to be achieved, if a shooter like JJ is taken away from Teague.
The minimum standard on this list, is T.J. Ford in the 2007 – 08 season:
23.5 min
12.1 ppg
6.1 ast
2.0 rebs
And he had to shoot 47% FG to achieve those numbers in that short of a time.
So you’re expecting Teague to go from a guy who got minimum playing time . . to a guy who gets at least 25 minutes a game, and will be at minimum . . a young T.J. Ford?
I don’t know man. If Drew could do that for Teague, that means either a ton of GMs overlooked this kid in the draft, or Drew may be the best coach in Atlanta history.

It doesn’t matter who the coach is until the Hawks get the right pieces in place. Woodson did not deserve to be fired. For whatever reason, he was not a popular coach in Atlanta. Despite the fact that the Hawk improved every season under him, the fans did not seem to appreciate him. I don’t care if Phil Jackson, Larry Brown, or Chuck Daley coached this team, we were not getting past Orlando or Cleveland. That tells me the bigger problem is at the player level and it’s not that big a problem. Every team has concerns from top to bottom, ours are threefold:
1. We need a presence in the middle. Defensively, we need a guy our opponents are going to respect and account for when driving. Josh is great for coming from the side or behind but we need someone to stop the drive straight up. Offensively, we need someone who gives us more second chance points via offensive rebounds.
2. We need help for Joe Johnson offensively (or need to replace him). This can be done by a combination of coaching philosophy or player acquisition. This was Woody’s biggest flaw IMO, the iso-Joe just doesn’t work in the long run. Perhaps Drew has more imagination for making the Hawks work in a half-court set.
3. We need a point guard for the future. I don’t know if Teague is the man but by gosh it’s time to give him a chance to lead or fail as a starting PG. Bibby should come off the bench more.
Six years later and we’re in the same “needs” boat we were when this all started shipping Jason Terry away. We still need a Center and a PG. The difference is we’ve got the other 3 spots solid and are deep enough on the bench to make noise. We’re a 53-win team folks and that has to be respected. Let’s not lose sight of all the teams who wish they were in the Hawks’ position.

Answer me this. If Al Horford was the starting center for the Celtics right now, would the Celtics be a better team with Al at the 5, or with Perkins at the 5?
That, O’Brien, is a good question. Thank you for asking. With the big 3 + rondo, the Celtics don’t need the offense that Al provides. Al is a great defender, gets his body in the right position to make shots difficult, decent job keeping his hands up and closing out on shooters. That said, he’s not as good of a defender as Kendrick.
Kendrick has 40 lbs added on yet similar defensive quickness (he can move for 280 lbs). His size and lack of offensive focus allows him to be more effective on the defensive end. He could care less about size, i’ve watched him ruthlessly go at Shaq and the biggest guys in the league. While he looks like a friggin beast on the court sometimes, I am told that he is one of the nicer guys in the league, very slow speaking, heavy country accent.
Celtics starters not named Kendrick Perkins need the ball, they’re all good scorers. The fact that Kendrick doesn’t play a role in the offense really just makes things easier for all involved. Perkins is one of the few remaining successful true defensive, high FG % centers obviously you’re going to want that over a hybrid 4/5 who brings more offense / foul shooting / passing to the table.
Now put Perkins as the starting center for the Hawks, and tell me if the Hawks are a better team with Perkins at the 5, or with Al at the 5
The only way the Hawks become a better team with Perkins at 5 is with Al at 4. Hawks need Al to bring anything and everything to the table. He’s moved probably from the #5 option to the #3 option, with some wanting him to be the #2 option because him and Josh put up roughly the same numbers and have similar post scoring abilities.
to finish this ugly series of random thoughts,
All things considered,
I would believe you 100% if you told me Al Horford was the starting center for the 2010 champion celtics. I would also believe it if you told me that Kendrick Perkins was the starting center for the 2010 championship Hawks, but I’d be curious to figure out who surrounded Perkins in Atl to make up for Horford’s 15-20 ppg.

Congrats to LD. Good luck to him. I’m sure once his playing days were done, that his career goals shifted to becoming a head coach and winning titles. I hope it happens for him soon. I’m pretty sure he was an assistant on the Detroit team with Woody, so he’s probably got a ring from that. Let’s hope he can keep a competitive team on the floor year in and year out until ownership changes or decides to spend some real money. It would be nice to spend the MLE every year and make moves at the deadline to improve the team even if it means taking on a contract. I’d love to re-sign Joe & Chill, draft a 1st rounder, and give Haywood the MLE this offseason. Won’t happen with this ownership though.

I think we all know that the Hawks have a “softness” problem, from JJ on down. Being physical just isn’t in the makeup of this team. I don’t know how any of this changes in the future, without bringing in “tougher players” via a trade.
It’s a reason why those mid 90s San Antonio Spurs teams seem to always lose in the 2nd round. They were way too soft, despite them having talent.

Can’t argue with any of what you said, it was the best answer I think I’ve seen to such a question.
Here’s where I think the debate about Horford being a center vs being a power forward comes into focus just a bit. I think Horford is every bit as good a defender as Perkins, just not at the center position. Conversely, though Perkins moves well, I think Horford would be a better defender at the power forward spot than Perkins would.
But I have no proof to back that up (since Horford spends nearly all his time at the 5), except where we’ve seen Horford more than adequately stay in front of a backcourt player, when caught on a switch (if he’s had time to track the player before they make their move).
I think Perkins would get eaten alive if he had to play in the switch defense that Horford had to play in. But that’s just my opinion. Also, there would be some times where Horford would be mismatched against other power forwards that like to wander out to the perimeter (Rashar Lewis comes to mind).

In fact, I feel that this is almost precisely why the Detroit Pistons championship team that featured Rasheed Wallace and Ben Wallace, managed to do what they did. Well, that and the fact that they were tough from spots 1 through 5, beginning with the ultra tough Chauncey Billups, the kind of pg I haven’t seen in these parts since…well….

Read NBAdraft.net and saw their analysis of the Hawks, including what they should/could/might do in the draft. Interesting reading.
I wonder if we’ll take a gander at Larry Sanders if he falls to us? Less of a project than Solomon Alabi or Hassan Whiteside (who may not even be available by then, unless realize he’s a shorter Hasheem Thabeet), and fits the tough guy rebounder/defender we could use off the bench. He needs to add weight, though…
Stanley Robinson intrigues me as well.

LOL @ sensitivity. All I’m doing is tossing it right back at you. No sensitivity on my part sir. I just tell it like it is, as I’m sure you think you do. I wish I could support the Grizzlies more. They remind me of us 2 years ago. If I do go to a Grizzlies game, it’s either to see the Hawks play, or because I happen to be in Memphis for some reason,
But my allegiance to the Hawks is longstanding. I’m just glad as an adult, I can support my team by going to the games.
It is what it is in Atlanta I guess. Expecting some of the fans to be more committed to the team, is just too much to ask I guess.

NorthCyde- Josh and Al are definitely two players i want to keep but,I dont see The Larry Obrien in our future w/h them at the PF/C. I mean Kurt Thomas out tuffed us for stretches and Lets not forget Dwight Howard man handle’n us-He does that to alot of teams but Boston held him in check and I think the reason they did is because of the length and girth-could be the T. Thibeddeau defense as well but the 6′11 250 KG and the 6′10 285 Perkins had a big role in them winning the series We need another big with a decent post game and a bangers mentality.
Lewis-Al is a better overall player IMO but perkins is the better post defender. We wouldnt be a better team with Perkins. Al’s passing, jumper, footwork and ball handling are alot better than Perkins.
If Jj leaves its not the end of the world, i think he will leave which is why we should do a sign and trade with Sacremento and get Jason Thompson/1st rd pick
I also wnat Chillz back on the Team. Its time to bring the fro back home.
Randolph Morris should be resigned and given a chance to see what he can do with consistent minutes. His D still needs work but his touch around the rim and post moves are nice. Bring Siler in as Collins replacement-My gawd he is horrible. I know Siler could have done better than what chesse burger gave us. Waste of a roster spot. While im at it -thanx Joe Smith and Mario its been real…….
With the extra cap space if JJ leaves we should also make a play for Rudy Gay…..Hmmmm just had a vision Pg- Crawford . Sg-Rudy Gay . Sf-JSmith . Pf-Horford . C-J Thompson. This would be a sweet line up running a Houston style offense.

Well at least you recognize it as a game of catch that goes both ways, though I think you take it a bit more serious than I do. I frequently laugh when typing…and yes, I do respond to your comments more than you do mine. I told you before (and you probably missed it), I enjoy talking (even when disagreeing or challenging) with people who understand more about the game than the average boob who wants to make silly comments that are either glittering generalities, or outright simple-minded misinterpretations.
Disagreement does not an enemy make, at least it shouldn’t in the blog world. Some people get that, some don’t.
It is what it is in Atlanta I guess. Expecting some of the fans to be more committed to the team, is just too much to ask I guess.
That is a conclusion I came to long ago, especially after realizing that Atlanta is not a purely, or even mostly native populated city. The diversity is incredible, and while I won’t chalk up all of the issues with the fan base to this, there is no denying it’s effect.
As you said, it is what it is.

Saw that, good vid. I would like a Larry Sanders type, also interested in Robinson if he’s available. Jerome Randle is smaller than I’d want to go at the point, but he has some serious skills. Will it cause him to be a low level journeyman who has a rough time staying in the league, like Mike Wilks? If so, then let’s pass on that.
I could maybe go for him in the 2nd round if some other/better options aren’t available. He could also go undrafted, and it might not be a bad idea to let him hang around for summer league or something to that effect. Not that he’s a bad prospect, I just want to see what he can do with tougher competition. Hard to make a living in the league at his size.
Upside of that includes players like TJ Ford, DJ Augustin, Juan Barrea, and Earl Boykins. Not a long list…and all but maybe Augustin are backup types.

O’Brien, I saw an interview with Mark Cuban. In it, he was talking about his early years as a Mavs owner. The team was struggling and he thought guys were slacking and making excuses. So, after a road loss, he went on the team bus, asked the coaches to leave for a second, and just blasted the players. He told them that this was not what he was paying them for. And, if they didn’t start playing better he would trade them to the worst teams he could find. He also told them that he did not hold the coaches responsible for their bad play, since he knew the coaches were busting their a$$es trying to prepare for each game. The players were not doing their jobs.
That’s were I got that wanting the owners to get on the players from. Our owners are so buddy-buddy with all the guys, it makes me sick. They need to start applying pressure on these guys. The Hawks are not a young team anymore. They’ve been around now for a little while. The expectations are higher. Efforts, like we got against Orlando, just can’t be tolerated.
I think we have a group of players who got a little full of themselves, boasted about being one of the best teams in the east, and then crapped their pants when it was time to back up the talk. Owners need to help the coaches kick these guys in the nuts when they just roll over.
Really, it’s hard for me to remember this team won 53 games. I am so disgusted with the playoff effort, it is almost like those 53 wins never happened. I read a quote from Jamall Crawford, after Coach Drew got hired, saying “it’s not like we’re a bad team”. I found myself saying, “Really?”. Certainly seems like they are a bad team to me.

I was sitting 4 seats from the bench; and it was not a “competitive or spirited exchange!” Bibby told Hill “to go and F*** himself and if you don’t know the play to shut the F*** up!” It took Woody and Drew pushing Bibby back out on to the floor at the end of the time out to keep Bibby from charging Hill. Out that time out, the Hawks ran the play which resulted in Bibby hitting a 3 off a double high pick. On the way back up the court, Bibby glares at Hill and mouths “F*** you!” And that is the rest of the story…

Northcyde,
If you were a Memphis fan, how would you feel about your team trading Pau Gasol (2 time all NBA third team, their best player at the time, who went on to help the Lakers win a championship) for the pieces they did?
Pau Gasol for Kwame Brown (not with Memphis anymore), Javaris Creittenton (not with Memphis anymore), Aaron McKie (not with Memphis anymore, Marc Gasol, and a first round pick in 2008 (#28, Donte Green, not with Memphis anymore), and a first round pick in 2010 (#28).
Wouldn’t that be similar to the Hawks trading JJ, also a third team all NBA player, for those pieces?
If you were a Memphis fan, you would probably have to get on them too, because I doubt if they are a championship fan base.

I think his skills just fell of the cliff and his play is about to take a significant nosedive. He’s still a good player, my thing is, Can anyone honestly say that Mike Bibby could possiblly lead us to a title at this point? I like the guy, but we should cut our losses and trade him before no one wants him and we are stuck paying him $6milll in the 3rd year of his $18mill deal and he can’t live up to it.

You and others are acting like someone is asking for Bibby to be the starter. No, I’m making a retrospective point. I’ve said that from this point forward it is either going to be Jeff Teague’s or another point guard team to run as the lead 1 guard. Bibby is now a guard that should come in to shot 3’s and give relief minutes like Craig Hodges did towards the end of his career.

Now to the other end of the Bubba Crew spectrum, to the legendary brown ooze of undershorts, Sautee,
When every you twist and distort my comments as you slither along I will not respond. I was injecting sarcasm at the lone vote that horford receive for his defensive critique. I heard that woodson told the coach of the 19# shot blocking center if you will cast your vote for my boy the #18 shot blocking center then will have at the least have the ability to say our center received recognition for his defense.
Actually Horford does get recognition for his defense. Most opposing coaches try to isolate him under the basket to go 1 on 1 with the likes of nate robinson or tony parker. There are many film clips With Al standing under the basket admiring their dunks.
Mike the con n ham planted this story about woodson and his players. I dont give it much credence like I dont give the con ham credence.
I have to agree with the consensus that Perkins is a much better defensive center than Al. I acknowledge that Al’s has a career average of 12 pts, his senior year in college he averaged 13 and last year he averaged 14 and this after Woodson responded to Al’s lack of offense by tweaking it running plays that work with Al’s limited offensive tools. Im not excited about Als offense either. 12-14 point is not exactly going to take the other team out of their game plan or break any one down. Perkins average 6 points last year.
Perkins Defense has more of an impact on the game than Als 12 or 13 points. Id rather have defense strength than an offensive mediocrity.

I agree with jroc on this one. While I understand what you are saying about Bibby and his future role on the team. With me, it’s more about asset management, and right now Bibby would be more of an asset to us in a trade than playing for the Hawks on the court (where he is increasingly becoming a huge liability). Hopefully sund can pull off some more magic like he did aruond this time a year ago by trading the useless and dissapointing Speedy claxton with Acie Law for Jamal.

@doc,
I am disappointed in ASG. I haven’t been as critical of them as others have been largely because I agreed with almost every move except the hiring of Sund. My greatest fear is that we will now see the W-L trend line go in the opposite direction and then the organization goes back into a funk, perhaps even lose Horford next offseason. We, ok I, have just now have gotten use to offseasons where the main focus wasn’t on clearing cap space and stocking drafty picks. I don’t want to go back to start over again.
@Texas Pete,
I can see the argument that the current roster has structural issues. Others have had that discussion as well and it seems that not everyone agrees that there are such issues. I think now that there has been a coaching/philosophical change, I do not see there being much patience for further arguments that the issues are with the guys in the suits (unless they are injured players).
As for whether or not Coach Woodson had to go, I think it there was enough evidence on paper to support his retention. I also think there was enough evidence on the court to warrant his dismissal. This change should/could have been made last offseason as we all knew that the lack of extension likely meant Coach Woodson was a lame duck all along.
What the East will look like next season is a big mystery at this point so it’s hard to predict potential playoff matchups. I will say that given the coaching change and if JJ returns, I don’t buy any arguments as to why this isn’t a 50-win team next season.
Go Hawks!
JSS

Once again, I talk in the “here and now!” Until the Hawks find someone to take on Bibby (@ $ 6 million dollars), that is a moot desire to trade him. He is not a expiring rookie or UFA contract. Moreover, unless you know of another Crawford deal in reverse (you are going to have take on somebodies dead weight in return for Bibby). Saving at the most 2 million dollars (not $6 million), you are actually better off eating Bibby salary the next 2 years like we did Speedy and at least he sees the floor (unlike “Mr. Injured”). It is the reason I never talk about Joe Johnson, either you sign him and get the benefit of his cap value, or you cut him loose and take the cap hit and play this season hamstrung by his value sitting against our cap with a lesser piece on the roster.

Not all five guys necessarily being scorers, but all five guys being a threat. We have the capability of obviously Joe having a big night, or Josh Smith or Al having a big night, even the capability of Marvin having a big night. And Jamal coming off the bench is obviously a guy who can score in bunches. We just want to add a few things, subtract a few things just to make us a better ballclub.

You folks have screamed for flow in the offense. I will not know until I see what Drew has in mind. I saw all but 5 of the Hawks games last year. So I know his shortcomings are at making his own shot. I also know what he can accomplish when he placed in better positions on the floor. When a 2nd unit with Jamal as the primary option and ball handler is on the floor, Bibby becomes a asset when placed properly on the offensive end. That is why you set picks for the man, he is a option, not your 1st option… If the liability that Steve Kerr can play in this league, Bibby can… Find a trade that works, I won’t lose any sleep.

in fact, i happen to believe that Acie was the better college player. however, i am pleased to know that he is here working. i always felt that leadership comes from the PG position. i am eager to see the Jeff Teague that was raved about during last year summer league and camp.. in watching Jeff in limited action this year he appears to have the ability to set up his teammates at will, thats if he isnt just passing it to Joe or Jamal on the wing. now our bigs etc finishing is another story.

Not a matter of getting off the bench, Chancey Billups almost played himself out the league because he was lost. He finally admit his shortcomings and worked on it relentlessly. Acie went all Smush Parker, “I’m in the dog house, no need to work on getting better!” I do hope that Acie finally gets after it, realizes that his is not going to carry a team, but with hard work, he can help someone’s team… Hey, Boris Diaw pulled himself up…

I like what I hear from Drew. I love hearing how Teague has been here the whole time putting in the work. Drew said he is going to start on him immediately. Seeing guys who aren’t even under contract show up to his press conference says a lot about what the players think of Drew. If he installs the offense he is talking about, holds everyone accountable, has competition for spots, and develops Teague then I will be happy.

I like this hire more and more. I know he wants a more creative offense with more ball and player movement where “everyone on the court is a threat”, but what is his Defensive philosophy? Does he want us to always switch no matter what like Woody? Let’s hope not. That stuff doesn’t work in the playoffs against top tier teams. Hopefully Larry D will make better in-game adjustments than Mr. Potato Head AKA Woodrow. I would like to see some Zone and some different looks Defensively like what we saw in game 6 Vs. Milwaukee. We saw the versatility we possess Defensively for the first and last time under Woody in that game. Will Larry D utilize the bench and timeouts better than Woody? Will he strategize better than Woody and utilize matchups better? I sure hope so

Coach Drew is talking a good game. Re-signing impending free agent Joe Johnson was a priority, as was getting Johnson to share the ball on offense. Forward Josh Smith will be positioned near the basket and not on the perimeter.
I hope he does what he can to back it up. 2 other parts jump out at me from MC’s article;
By the end of Drew’s news conference, every player on Atlanta’s 2009-10 roster except for Johnson and Joe Smith had filed in to show support. So far, it seems like all the players like him a lot.
According to to people with knowledge of the team’s evaluations, management concerns involved Woodson’s entire program.
So maybe it was a house of cards after all.

NORTHCYDE-I certainly hope that wasn’t an attempt at trying to provide some sort of proof that it might be unrealistic to expect Teague to be able to get the job done. Unlike you, I just don’t see it as an insurmountable task. Even with Woodson’s limited half court OFF system, and his unwillingness to totally commit to running, we still managed to average 101.7PPG.
With LDrew’s commitment to running, we will likely increase that PPG total. I find it hard to believe that a PG with Teague’s speed, quickness and athleticism couldn’t match those projected totals in our OFF when our SG & PG managed to average 4.9 and 4.2APG respectively. Even our extremely slow, none penetrating, jump shooting PG MBibby managed to average 3.9APG, which is only 2.1 fewer APG than the projected 6APG.
It only takes 4-5 two pt field goals and 2-4 FT’s to average 12PPG, and that’s not a particularly difficult feat for an athletic penetrating PG playing in an uptempo OFF. He’ll be able to use his speed and quickness to score in the open floor, and his DEF to score off steals. If Bibby can score 9.1PPG, considering how limited and inconsistent he was last yr, why would anyone think Teague couldn’t use his skills to improve upon that by 3PPG?
The more fast breaks he runs and the more he penetrates and dish’s, the more assists he’ll accumulate. It amazes me at how many fans seem willing to use Woodson’s stupid bias against young PG’s to cast unsubstantiated doubt on Teague’s ability.
Before CPaul went down last yr to injury, his rookie backup, DCollision, was pretty much thought of in the same terms as JTeague. But his HC wasn’t as stupid and biased as Woodson towards rookie PG’s and gave him a solid chance to sink or swim. These are Collison’s bench and starter stats:
BENCH: GMS-39, MINS-15.9, PPG-6.4, APG-2.5, 3PT%-.325, FG%-45.5.
STARTS: GMS-37, MINS-40.3, PPG-18.8, APG-9.1, 3PT%-.429, FG%-48.5.
Now compare Teague’s bench and starting stats to Collison’s.
BENCH: GMS-71, MINS-9.9, PPG-2.8, APG-1.5, FG%-.387, 3PT%-.217
STARTS: GMS-3, MINS-30, PPG-12.7, APG-7.3, FG%-.444, 3PT%-.222.
You can’t tell me Collison waited until the very moment CPaul went down to injury to suddenly developed the ability to become the player he became. The difference maker was, he got a solid opportunity and the prerequisite mins to play the way he was capable of playing all along, which was something Woodson steadfastly denied JTeague. Every aspect of his gm increased with the increase of consistent mins and opportunity.
JTeague has proven, in my eyes, that he’s capable of performing the same feat as DCollison if given the same consistent mins and opportunity.

It sounds promising that the team feels that Coach Drew brings something different to the table. The team showing up for the press conference says a lot about their support of the direction the ASG/Rick Sund chose to go with the coaching change.
Some have commented that a bigger name coach would have perhaps help fill the arena. Well maybe. But, how many fans on this blog was a part of the Fire Woodson crew and despite this still attended games or even purchased season tickets the past 6 years? Yeah. You know you did. Why? Because the players are the guys/gals (go Atlanta Dream) are who drew you to the arena in the first place.
Anywho, just like Coach Mike Woodson moved on, this Atlanta Hawks fan is moving on to the Head Coach Larry Drew Era.

He might just be fine with helping guys in the summer but it wouldn’t hurt to call him and see if he would like to try it. As much as I hate ISO Joe, that was a problem usually reserved for the end of the game. We were getting killed by Orlando way before that stage in the game. Looks like Joe wants to go and I’m fine with that, but we need to at least see what we can get for him with a sign and trade.
Trade checker shows that Joe + Zaza for Okafor and M. Peterson works. We get a good Center for a guy who want to leave anyway, and can play Al at his natural 4.
Tyson Chandler is leaning towards opting out, so what about a sign and trade Joe for Tyson Chandler (maybe a 3 way trade cause Joe won’t want to go to Charlotte). Move Al to 4, Josh to 3, have Marvin come off the bench, start Crawford. Chandler is less expensive than Joe so use the extra cap space to get someone who can create his own shot (John Salmons or maybe Jordan Crawford from the draft) off the bench.

I tried to take a brief respite from the blog
because it was getting like golf. Not the blog itself
but the Hawks. Instead of providing past-time, I was
allowing things I had no control over, to tick me off.
As in my perception that the ASG had over-ridden
Mr. Sund’s decision. That type of thing happened to me
enough times in my career that I felt his pain.
Never once did I have any animosity toward LD.
Everthing I’m hearing him say is positive.
Regardless, he is not Woody. I know you & I differ
on that topic but change any change was necessary for
everyone’s mental hlth. [on this blog]
However, each time I tried to step away for a few days

Sam’l,
Although I’m not a big fan of the Drew signing, one of the positives is he already knows what a lot of the issues are with this team, because he had courtside seats for every game. Knowing what the issues are gives him a head start with coming up with solutions.
Another positive is he already has a working relationship with JJ (which appears to be a good relationship). So he can help recruit JJ better than one of the new guys could (except for Avery Johnson maybe).
One of the keys for me will depend on his coaching staff. I hope he doesn’t bring back all the guys from last year.
Like you, I do have my doubts. But as a Hawks fan, I will give him the benefit of the doubt.

I agree with you 100 %. I was extremely irritated when we did nothing aþ the trade deadline and, nothing major in the last off season outside of SMOY! That’s why I hold the GM more accountable than Woodson, or just as! For his lack of player movement!
There should have been NO untouchables on this roster- especially Marvin! But, to Sund’s defense – Who knew Marvin would lay an egg? Childress situation was severely mis-handled.
But, let’s admit – Sam’L – we have no trade able parts on that bench except maybe Zsa or SMOY!

Glad to see the conversation is moving towards free agency and the draft. I appreciated Drews comments, now we’ve gotta see if the players buy into the system and when they don’t if Drew can effectively hold them accountable.
Okafur and Chandler are serviceable centers in this league. They’ve fallen out of favor with their teams b/c of the high expectations. We might have those as well, but right now I think we need someone servicable at center to allow Al to move to PF. By doing that we’ll now have 3 players on the block? Can Tyson hit jumpers to allow Josh the space down low he’ll need?
Will Josh develop that short jumper like Al to help spread the offense. Nothing much more than just outside the paint. Why must Josh shoot 1/2″ inside the 3 to prove he’s not stupid enough to shoot 3 pointers? It’s the same thing!
I like the thoughts of Bibby headed to the bench. No disrespect to Bibby, but it’s time for Teague to show what he can do with a real shot, a committed to Teague shot to help this team grow. Bibby can support this team with timely baskets and veteran leadership at key times and from the bench. I wouldn’t mind seeing another point guard option to add speed, possibly the 3 and some D. Is that out there?
Who do we keep from our roster last year? Joe – we need to convince him we can treat him differently. Better ball movement, fewer touches, but identical or better stats due to better use of his energy. No more superstar iso’s – treat him like the great catch and shoot guard he is! Randolph to me deserves another chance and a real shot for minutes. Mario – I don’t see him sticking with the team with Drew in charge. Joe Smith – good option, but what does he want? Collins – Could’ve been a serviceable backup, what’s his committment level? Hunter – don’t we have new options? Siler – what’s he look like after a year in China? Chills – is he even willing to come back or willing to be traded?
My main question is what’s Marvin up to? What are his thoughts about the summer, about Drew, about his plans to show us something next season? What does Drew intend to do to extract our expensive lump of coal and turn it into a diamond from the rough.

@ 813 PM that You-tube link was wild! Wow!
Based on what I’m hearing – maybe Woodson was the BONE of contention of the chemistry issues IF he had personality conflicts with all those players? Wow!
The HC is supposed to push different buttons with all the different players! More so than treating everybody the same. It is so psychological at the

Woodson killed the chemistry by sticking to his guns and sticking to what he thought worked. It led to no reason for others to improve. Marvin for example would never be an option in Woodson’s sets, so why improve? We all knew what would happen at the end of games. He would play the same players, same sets and never change regardless of performance.
I think if Drew rewards hard work and makes positions, minutes and touches up for grabs he can be successful just from the competitiveness it’ll create. Those who think they have talent and don’t buy in can be trade chips.
Woodson created the ill will from his lack of accountability. Drew can easily correct that by setting a standard and sitting folks who don’t meet it!
Who on our team is working hard now that they know a new sheriff is in town? That’s who we should see getting the touches next season!

1st Question….Are the Hawks better off if Joe Johnson comes back on a 5-yr $90M deal (let’s say starting at $16.5M this year) -or- if Joe walks, we bring back Childress on a 4-yr $27.5M (let’s say starting at $5.75M this year) and sign another wing like R. Brewer, M. Miller, J. Salmons, or A. Morrow with a 3-yr deal somewhere at or under the MLE…..In summary, are we better off with Joe and little to no room for additional players, or are we better off with the deeper team?

2nd Question….Assuming Joe walks, we get nothing in return, and we sign Josh Childress: at that point, would you rather spend the MLE on a wing player such as in my 1st question, or would you rather spend it on a big (B. Haywood, T. Chandler (looks like he may opt out), etc…) and go with what we have on the wing (Crawford, Evans, Marvin, Childress, draft pick???)?

I agree. Some people refuse to show any optimism, or at least remain neutral. All they do is whine and pi$$ and moan. Time to move on and see what happens. Sour grapes…keep it to yourself and if you’re so unhappy PLEASE leave us in peace. And last I looked Joe Johnson ain’t gone yet, so the gloom and doom isn’t necessary. On top of that, even if he decides he’s outta here, there is no reason to lose ALL hope. We have some players on this roster, and some pieces to work with. The talent pool won’t be as good, but it’s not guaranteed lottery land, either.

DRMARYB-you have to understand that psychologically, people like TRUTH SERUM are perpetually on the run from anything that even remotely approaches the truth or facts. He is the antithesis of his chosen on line moniker. Therefore, when slapped across the face with the FACTS, or THE UNDESPUTED TRUTH, like has often been done by SAUTEE, he simply can’t deal with it.
So, whenever he, and others like him, are caught in their lies, and/or challenged by facts and/or UNDESPUTED TRUTHS that exposes their self serving BS, they resort to the old tried and true approach, at least for them, of ATTACKING THE MESSENGER, WHILE DELIBERATELY AND CONVENIENTLY AVOIDING THE MESSAGE.
He, like so many like him, craves attention and uses the adversarial approach to try and demonstrate his intelligence. And make no mistake about it, he has plenty of intelligence, just not enough to take advantage of it.
If JJ wants to walk, that’s fine. In the long run, he could be doing us a favor. If we could use the money we’d save from his departure to sign 2 players like SG John Salmons and C TChandler or BHeywood, I think it would make us a better team in the long run.
JJ is an excellent all around player that does everything well, and can make most teams better. However, he lacks the quickness, speed, athleticism, explosiveness and inspirational fire that seems to come with guards that are able to carry their teams. So, while their won’t be a player available to us that can adequately replace everything he brings to the table, we can certainly add an insert, another 2 chairs, and rearrange the seating to expand the tables seating capacity.
LDrew will have plenty of talent to work with. It’s like the difference between having a $100 dollar bill or 5 $20 dollar bills. While the $100 and the $20’s represent different denominations, collectively they have the same value. It’s just that having 5 $20’s, instead of a $100 dollar bill, gives you more flexibility and options.

Thanks Ray, I’m just 100% focussed on how to make our team better!
Question with Joe will probaly take all summer. Teams with lots of cash will wait on Lebron, Wade, Bosh and Amare to sign. Joe, unfortunately will be 2nd fiddle. Maybe not, but I’m guessing so.
With that said waiting on what offer will secure him will cost us time signing other free agents. We’ll get Joe at a discount or nothing if we wait too long? Is that what we want? Who can we immediately sign to replace him? Would they be better? How committed is Joe to buying into Drew’s system? Does he want to be here? Will he like being here if nobody makes a big offer and we get him on the cheap?
I definitely like JoJo’s thoughts. If I knew we were getting several rising quality players in place of Joe I might take that chance. If Joe leaves and we get nothing all our eggs are in Marvin’s basket. He’s great at laying eggs, but I don’t think that’s what I was hoping for.

Darrell – I’m all for signing one? What about the Chandler or Okafur options? I tend to like them better than Haywood? How can you bash our roster when Woodson didn’t use the centers he had on the bench? I know we bash Randolph and Collins for their 2 minute stints on Howard but how could they be prepared? To defend someone like Howard you need consistent solid minutes in the rotation. I think Randolph showed promise. Collins has been a decent backup for many teams. Neither got a shot here under Woodson? Do we want Randolph and Collins back? Who can we get besides Chandler, Okafur or Haywood? Do you think we can get Haywood from Dallas or will he be the next Gortat?

Honestly, JJ is big, a solid defender, creative on offense but slow to get anything done. If Childress is not coming back, we could pull a Paul Pierce and turn JJ, for the latter part of his career, into a bigger, slower, rebounding, passing and shooting SF.
PG – Teague
SG – Jamal Crawford
SF – Joe Johnson
PF – Josh Smith
C – Al Horford
is our most offensively powerful lineup if people are willing to share the ball.
But i’m under the impression that Jamal and Joe can’t co-exist in a successful, ball moving offense, nor would Jamal be able to do anything on defense against guys like Kobe, D-Wade, premiere sg’s. Then again, Kobe’s been dropping 38 on Ray Allen, and Boston’s about to win a championship, so maybe it wouldn’t even matter?
Then, there’s the chance of,
PG – Teague
SG – Joe Johnson
SF – Josh Childress
PF – Josh Smith
C – Al Horford
or
PG – Teague
SG – Jamal Crawford
SF – Josh Childress
PF – Josh Smith
C – Al Horford
or, my biggest fear,
PG – Teague
SG – Jamal Crawford
SF – Marvin Williams
PF – Josh Smith
C – Al Horford

I like Tyson Chandler enough that if he opted out I would offer him the full MLE over 5 years (I think like 5 yrs $34M for a 27 yr old). The understanding would be that he would come off the bench and play in combinations with Josh at PF and Horford on bench, Horford at PF and Josh on bench, and Horford at PF and Josh at SF. Getting him 20-25 minutes a game off the bench. Keeping his minutes down should help him to stay healthy. Still not sure why he would opt out with $12.5M on the table for this year though.

Excellent questions. I think that if Joe gets 18 mil a year, then it’s best at 5 years and not 6, as you seem to suggest. There is no denying Joe’s talent, but if Larry Drew’s offensive schemes can make Joe more efficient and effective, then that makes keeping him all the more attractive. I just have the feeling that the 5 yrs vs 6 yrs thing might become a sticking point in negotiations, and I don’t want to hand him a 6 yr contract for that kind of money, particularly one that might be heavy on the back end. But again, the idea of him becoming more deadly in Drew’s offense is very, very enticing and encouraging.
Would we be better off without him, and with better depth at the wing? That’s a hard argument to be convincing with. Bringing back Childress is still something we just don’t know will happen. If we can get him back, fine. He was a very good player for us before he left. But let’s say we can’t. Two wings I would want are two from your list: Anthony Morrow and Ronnie Brewer. Why? Brewer is a rabid defender who can get after it, defending the 1, 2, and 3. Think Mario West, but bigger, under control, and capable of providing some offense as well. Morrow is a pure sniper, a guy who can be absolutely deadly from the perimeter. Do they make up for Joe? Nope. But they do provide depth.
Why not Salmons or Miller? Well, I really like Salmons, and he’s a pro’s pro. But, playing like he did in a contract year (and I hate to sound cynical) will likely earn him more money than he is truely worth, and he’s older than Joe. Also, when he goes in a funk, he seriously goes in a funk. Having said that, I would not have an issue with having him over Jamal, but wouldn’t want both. Reason being, between the two, the minutes at SG are all eaten up, and between the two they don’t provide the defensive impact that Joe does. I mean, if you’re going to pay out 18 mil a year or more for shooting guards….
Mike Miller is very talented, and he can do a lot for you at the 2 or 3. I think the time to get him was a couple of years ago, though. Miller’s downside can be inconsistency all over the court. When he’s on, he’s getting you points, rebounds, assists. When he’s not, he gets you just about nothing. More glaringly, he can’t seem to play a full season. I really wanted Miller here a couple years ago. We didn’t get him, and I think he will only be more injury prone as he gets into his 30s.
The other reason for going for the youngster is they will cost less. We still need a fairly rugged big man to play down low, off the bench. Like it or not, and whether you like Horford as a center or power forward, in order to replace him at center and move him to power forward (let’s be honest, this is NOT a guy you send to the bench unless you have two bonafide, perfectly matched starting five all-star players at the 4 and 5 in place already), you must have a better center than him. And I mean BETTER. If the guy isn’t an all-star, don’t even bother. The only exception would be that he and Al would make one heck of a 4/5 tandem, the kind that would force Josh Smith out (and probably to another team). For those who keep suggesting that we trade Josh Smith for a center, quit smoking that dirty stuff. Bad weed makes you really stupid. No team is going to trade a good center for a forward unless they have TWO good centers. Who has two good centers? Better yet, who has two good centers that doesn’t need one of them?
Obviously Joe walking with us getting no compensation is the worst case scenario, as you have no assets to work with out of the deal. Well, I say that, but it’s possible to do a sign and trade for contracts that we really don’t want, and players that don’t help us, I suppose that might be worse, but I can’t think of a particular deal that we would be that stupid and desparate to do.
Having said that, I’d rather spend the MLE on a big guy that can help down low off the bench. Spend less money on a guy like Brewer. Morrow can shoot, but if Joe leaves, we need a defender on the perimeter, and as I said earlier, Childress coming back is no guarantee. I realize I probably didn’t answer your question straight out, but to be honest, I haven’t thought it all the way through.

53 wins is nothing to sneer at. i wish woody had been able to somehow keep it together at the end of the season. that is where the coaching begins anew. i hope drew can draw on his background with the team and seriously look these guys in the eye and say this is what is expected and get it from the get go and continue it throughout the season and have guys get better in the end.

I never thought about Þhe analogy of Joe being a $100 bill -vs- 5 – $20 bills! Damn! What a thought?
I can really see the value in 5 pieces versus one.
That reminds me of Jimmy Johnson trading Herschel Walker for 5 players – and we ALL know the rest of that story with Leon Lett & aaah! TWho was the running back that broke Walter Payton’s record?). But, I like it … I like it!). The point you made is that we need multiple pieces in place of a Joe Johnson Max – Player contract!
What’s ironic is a Jimmy Johnson “JJ”. Philosophy versus a Joe Johnson “JJ”. Max-Deal!
Very Very Very – RICH!
Here’s my meal plan for you today:

In a spaghetti sauce (not canned tomatoes please – too many preservatives!),

2. Fresh spinach salad with blue cheese and vidalia onions sprinkled with lean freash bacon bits, topped with olive oil & balsamic vinegar. (very light bacon serving)
3. Italian bread with garlic pesto butter spread. (very light butter portion)
I hope you have someone to cook for you? The cooked tomatoes are the key ingredient to combat P.C. Cells)

We saw some new flashes from Horford this year, but then nothing else really new…except Marvin going further backwards? What happened to his 3 pt shot? He was ballin early the year before only to degrade slowly all year. We need Drew to push kids to develop and grow all season long.
I think Tyson would be able to fit in here. He’s about the same age, he shows the skills we need. He doesn’t want to be a superstar, just to fit a niche. I think he’d be a nice fit for our team at center. Much better than Okafur and or Haywood. Time will tell as to who gets his services.

If I’m Rick Sund, I would offer JJ no more than 5 years, $90 mil. If he wants to leave, hopefully we can work out a SNT.
If he leaves, I would go after Salmons. He should cost half of what JJ costs ($8 mil vs $16 – $18 mil). Salmons is 2 years older, but JJ has played a ton of minutes too. I would only offer Salmons a 4 year deal though (4th year team option).
Ray,
Remember that Salmons played well for Chicago (last season) down the stretch and in the playoffs too.
And if we resign JJ or sign Salmons, I would trade Crawford. He is an expiring contract, and I can’t see us resigning him next year. Plus he should bring us a couple solid bench players in return.
Fundamentals,
I like Tyson too, but he will be out of our price range (if he opts out). And now we are seeing some of the ramifications of Rick giving Marvin, Bibby and ZaZa $18 mil last year, because we have no money to spend. And neither of those guys are good trade assets.

I think the Hawks should sign Joe for a 6 year/ $98.5 million deal with the 6th year being a team option.
I wonder if the Hornets would consider a Marvin and Zaza for Okafor deal.
Big Ray, if the Hawks just flat out renounce the rights to Childress (what I wish they would do), then the Hawks would be better off. With the 7-8 million that Childress is counting against the cap space, the Hawks would be able to add Brewer and Miller (I’d prefer Miller over Morrow). The Hawks would be able to do this WHILE still keeping Joe. Think about this back court depth, Teague, Joe, Crawford, Bibby, Brewer, and Mike Miller. Those six would provide GREAT depth at PG, SG, and SF, with Josh, Horford, Okafor (off the bench), Morris, and draft picks solidifying the front court.

No way I tie up 100 million $ on a guy who shows no heart when it counts. No way. We’re already suffering Bibby, Zaza, and Ducks contracts. Why make it worse, with Horford coming up next year?

Man, time does heal ALL wounds!
I – am starting to think, maybe, we should NOT pay Joe Max-Money!
Based on Ken S analogy of a $100 bill -vs- 5 $20 bills? It’s the dollar – dollar bill yall!
Since we ain’t got NO money anyways – we should be smart with our money!
Besides, Joe will NEVER find another Major Market team – in a city like this that – Won’t NAIL his balls to.the walls for what he said RE: “I don’t care IF the fans come or NOT?”
New York media would have burned his house down after the TURD he laid!
To date, he still hasn’t apologized, That is really bothering me and does speak very LOUDLY to his lack of character!
I say, “Bump that noise & Bump – Joe!”
Let’s do what Ken S. Said & spread that peanut butter around the bread!

Spirit does not know how to properly distribute funds. They save money by hiring cheap coaches (although i think LD is at least as good a hire as Woodson), and waste money by signing over-rated bench players. One would think you could count on them to be, how can i say this, frugally conscience, and not keep JJ. But the Bibby, Marvin and Zaza contracts beg to differ. Don’t forget, like Bibby, Marv and Zaza, JJ is a prime candidate to get big $ and regress. You know this Spirit, please, not again. We’ve got a few pieces, just need a few more, not including JJ.
Feel free to hate.

O’Brien, Okafor’s contract is not as horrible as Marvin and Zaza’s contracts combined. Its easy to find a SF, and in the plan that I showed where by doing this trade and renouncing the rights to Childress, the Hawks would be able to add Brewer and Miller. Joe, Brewer, and Miller can each play the 2 and three without giving up size. In only 28 minutes a game, Okafor still averaged 10 ppg, and 9rpg. Tell me that he couldn’t easily find 28 minutes backing up Horford and Josh (That would still leave Horford and Josh playing 34 minutes per game). Any day I’d take Okafor, Brewer, and Mike Miller over Zaza, Marvin and an UNUSED Childress (who doesn’t want to come back to Atlanta).

Ramon…you can’t sign Brewer & Miller. All you have to work with is the MLE. How do you expect to be under the cap when you just signed Joe back? If you renounced Joe, Chill and all other free agents, THEN you’d have roughly $8M to work with but you’d lose the MLE…..Bottom line(s): Joe & Chill puts us over luxury tax….Joe & MLE puts us over luxury tax…..If Joe stays, you’ll have roughly $64M committed to 9 roster spots: (Teague/Bibby/Johnson/Crawford/Evans/Williams/Smith/Horford/Pachulia).

Without trades, the only way we can add two mid-tier free agents (First year salary from $2.5M-$5.7M) is if Josh Childress is one of them.

Thing about Kobe, KG, Allen, Pierce, Nash, older guys who are getting paid by championship calibur teams, is that they were all fairly effective as leaders and in the playoffs before they signed their last big contracts. They are all ballers, age isn’t going to change that. Now, Joe? Not a proven leader. Not a proven playoff contender. A solid defender and offensive ISO specialist. Yes, he’s a great player and doesn’t get in trouble off the court either, but he’s worth about 6 years 90m tops. That on top of the fact that I and I really only want him for the next 2-3 years because Woody overplayed him.

Did anyone see the video where Larry was asked if he was going to shave his eye-brows, to which Larry responded, “I have my own way of motivating players.” I think it’s on AtlantaHawks.com.
Did we ever get down to the bottom of why Woodson shaved the eyebrows?
Am I the last person to find out, by Larry Drew’s implications, that Woodson shaved his eye brows in an effort to motivate players?

Lewis, Ray Allen, and Pierce never did anything in the playoffs before now! They made it to the 2nd round of the playoffs at MOST. Pierce made it to the ECF only once in 2002, and that playoff season he only shot 40% from the field. The next two play off performances, Pierce shot even worse than that from the field. Joe is as good of a player and leader as Pierce or Allen was. It wasn’t until all three of them came together that Pierce and Allen got any kind of credibility for play off basketball. Allen will go down as one of the best shooters in history, but he won’t go down as a great player, only a great shooter.

Ramon,
I didn’t look at the numbers, but Allen and Pierce are popular, big name NBA players that sell tickets. Allen is one of the best shooters ever, Pierce is “the truth” when it comes to knocking down those mid range jumpers. Either way, KG isn’t coming in as a borderline superstar / player leader at the closing point of his career to lead JJ to a championship.
You are not worth a max contract if you are not a leader, not a big name NBA player, not exciting, not going to sell tickets, and not show any emotion other than frustration on the court. You are not worth a max contract as a #2.

Horford is due a big pay raise next year. If we trade for okafor, then we will have ~$35 mil tied up in Josh, okafor and horford. I think that’s too much.
I like Ronnie Brewer (I like Matt barnes too). And both of those guys are cheaper than childress.
We do need a shooter, which Mike Miller is. But I think jj redick or Anthony morrow (both restricted however ) would be cheaper.

Jackson, Popovich, Rivers, Sloan. Which one of these guys is an encourager? What the hawks are lacking is leadership plain and simple. From the owners all the way down to and most importantly to the players.
Now that ASG has their coach I hope they decide to give Drew a little more to work with than Zsa Zsa and Joe smith down low. They also need an upgrade at the small forward position as the Williams/Evans combo has given us nothing for 2 years now. I would really like to see an effort to sign Childress, although everything I am reading says that it isn’t going to happen. Jeff Teague can play and hopefully without the point guard killer Woodson, he can flourish. The frustrating thing is that the Hawks are only a couple of pieces away from being able to play with the big boys.

One of the things that thrills me to no end is the fact that the upcoming season will be the 1st, in at least in last 4 or 5, without a single player having a personal or professional issue with the HC. It will also be the 1st season since Bibby’s arrival in which there will actually be accountability for all, and actual competition for starting positions and bench mins.
We now have a HC that has the ability and/or willingness to utilize and focus on the talents of his bench players, rather than using, or manufacturing alleged short comings as an excuse for ignore them. This will allow us to take advantage of certain players skills in certain situations. Last yr, there was no doubt we should have taken advantage of RMorris’ excellent post OFF.
6′11″ PF/C RMorris and 7′ FA center DJ MBenga would be excellent cost effective additions as OFF/DEF options. We should also make a commitment to either sign or trade JChildress this yr. I have to agree with BIG RAY on us pursuing RBrewer. If Marvin is replaced in the starting lineup, we’d have our shooting big man off the bench.
Even without JJ, with a more versatile starting SF, and Teague @ PG, we could be just as effective offensively with a SG that plays good DEF and averages in the 14-16PPG range. If JJ resigns, I’d like to see him moved to SF and we still sign a DEF minded SG with some OFF skill.

Exactly Big Ray. Its like what Sekou said in a interview. Most fans were more concerned about a big name hire rather than if the guy can coach or if he is a good fit for the team. lol terrell. I don’t think many players liked Woodson at all. Sekou named about 6 players in that one interview I heard. Pachulia looked as if he had won the lottery when they were asking him about Drew. Im going to look at the free agents list later and throw some names out there of guys who could possibly come cheap and help out.

What if & or would we rather have:
(KenS…I’m changing one for monetary reasons)
Joe
-OR-
Childress
+
[select from] Haywood / Amir Johnson / *Matt Bonner=(3 pt%)
*(check out 3 pt% before you scoff) [stretch 4 or 5]
+
[select from] Redick / Anthony Morrow / Roger Mason=least exp.
*Salmons would have recieved 5.8 from Mil., + they wish
to re-sign. He will @ least 6+ from someone.
Thus – the above list…^… allows more freedom to spend
on others.

J.Randle = Nate = “Donkey”

How can anyone realistically say what JJ will or won’t do, especially when it involves moving to SF. He played SF whenever Crawford came into the gm and Marvin went out. JJ playing SF so much was the main reason MEvans was complaining about not receiving adequate mins. He would be an excellent point forward, and his skills would serve him better going against SF’s.

Where in the world are you going to get any production out of Randolph. Even in a offense/defense scenario, he is going to give 6 points for every 2 he’ll ever score. Morris is a zero sum game. It is time to cut him loose or get him at league minimum for one year and demand A WHOLE LOT MORE! He has shown absolutely no propensity to get better, N-O-N-E!!!
