Hawks pick Drew to be next coach.
The Hawks have decided to hire Larry Drew as their next head coach, people with knowledge of the decision said today.
Drew was Atlanta’s lead assistant for six years under Mike Woodson, who was let go last month. Drew and the team are working out the details of a contract this evening and the official announcement of his hiring is expected on Saturday.
Drew, 52, emerged from a group of finalists that also included Avery Johnson, Dwane Casey and Mark Jackson. Once Johnson agreed to coach the Nets early in the week, that left Atlanta’s ownership group and GM Rick Sund to choose from among the other three candidates.
This will be Drew’s first head-coaching job after he’s been an NBA assistant for the the last 14 seasons. He worked for the Lakers, Wizards, Pistons and Nets before joining Woodson’s staff for the 2004-05 season. Drew played 714 games over 10 NBA seasons from 1980-91.
“He’s very experienced, just being around the game,” Hawks guard Jamal Crawford said. “He’s very knowledgeable. I think he is prepared for a lot of different situations.”
When Sund decided not to retain Woodson, he said the team needed “another voice” after the team lost in the second round of the playoffs the last two years. The Hawks apparently decided Drew will have a leadership style distinct from Woodson while also having the advantage of established relationships with players and familiarity with the team’s issues.
“He knows the faults of our teams,” Crawford said. “It’s not like we are a bad team. Now we can continue to build; we don’t have to start over.”
Drew inherits a team that won 53 games next season and, among its core players, has all but Joe Johnson under contract for next season. But he will face some challenges as the Hawks look to break through after getting swept in the second round of the playoffs in consecutive years.
Drew is popular among players but now his role changes from sometimes-confidant to the person in charge of their playing time and involvement in the offense. He also will have to reprimand players for their mistakes while trying to maintain relationships and team chemistry.
“Everything is going to be a first for him,” Crawford said. “But I think it will be a little bit easier transition because he knows our team. He doesn’t have to come in and learn the different personalities, what makes people tick and how to motivate them.”
When the Hawks let Woodson go, among the concerns expressed by players and management was what they considered Woodson’s differing levels of accountability. They said Woodson didn’t rebuke certain players as often as he did others, leading to some resentment in the locker room.
The Hawks also want to move away from an isolation-heavy offensive approach that was influenced by guard Joe Johnson’s playing style. Johnson is eligible to become a free agent next month, and the Hawks still want to re-sign him.
A person with knowledge of Johnson’s plans said he’s still open to returning. But the person said the new coach would have to sell Johnson on relying more on his teammates in the offense and ensure him that locker-room chemistry would improve.

I ve been up all morning trolling the blog hallways, roof tops and bunkers looking for you.
Glad to see you’re still kicking.
Perk up Grand-Daddy! Don’t sound so weary … Don’t let the ASG make you feel like you ate MSG.
They have of way of wearing on us fans – just too many bitchy owners. Can you imagine
One guy being married to 8 women. I don’t know how the Mormons do it?
I mean really: “8 is more than enough”. Forget about the who the Coach is – we’re not there yet!
(Are we there yet?). Hell no, we’re not even close!
Once we get the players we have playing their “RIGHT” positions, then we can focus on our BIGS.
Yes we need 2 centers on this team, one to start and one to spell the other (a tag team).
From there, stack the bench with a solid player at 1 through 5.
Then the Coach can play his instrument and pluck all the notes in their right keys!
I.E. (In a perfect world!). RSund has a lot of work to do & all eyes are on him now (as it should be).
We can forget about the Clampetts’ in the owner’s circle! that is what it are! (Yes I said – Are).

This reportis perhaps the most damaging indictment against JJ to date as we enter into the FA season. I knew his stock would fall some from the sub par playoff performance but the suggestion here is that he should now be replace from the upper-echelon FA class. Forget about Lebron and Wade, according to this report, JJ name should not even be in the same conversation with players like Chris Bosh or A’mare Stoudemire. It is one thing when the FA player takes a popularity nose dive from unsubstantiated things but JJ shortcomings are well documented. The world has witness him laying eggs in the playoff on too many occasions. The word seems to out and his agent can’t spin this thing as a bad fit. The Hawk’s offense was tailor-made for JJ and he “stanked” it up. If this is truly the perception around the league about JJ, then he should check is ego at the door and rethink the Hawks last offer. That is if the want to offer the same amount of money. Maybe it’s time for Sund to play hardball or shall I say “Low-ball” here.

TRUTH SERUM-are you telling everyone that:
(1) replacing MBibby as the starting PG, reducing his mins and not allowing his poor DEF to be a burden on the entire starting team isn’t an improvement.
(2) starting Teague, who can penetrate, create easier scoring opportunities for other, play DEF, maintain an uptempo OFF and beat pressure DEF’s and start the OFF below the 3pt line, isn’t an improvement.
(3) actually making an effort to improve Marvin’s overall production won’t be an improvement.
(4) improving the overall DEF, by having a PG that actually plays DEF and his man, rather than having our C’s and PF’s playing PG’s or SG’s, won’t be an improvement.
(5) adding options and improvements to our half court OFF, consistently playing uptempo and maintaining more consistent ball movement won’t be an improvement.
If your answer to any of these questions is NO, then I have to ask you if YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT BASKETBALL, other than your undying affection for a former NBA HC named Mike Woodson?

Woodson did an excellent job of training the 7th point guard drafted last year. Im sure he will be better this year.
What will make the hawks better instantly is having an aggressive physical presence in the 5 spot not named Horford who can defend the basket regarless of whether an itty bitty guard or another center is in the paint.

I’m not angry about this hire but I am uncomfortable with it. You always have to wait and see with situations like this. Advantage is he’s not new to the team and don’t have to give time to develop relationships with the players. Also know the his offense is not ISO heavy. I just don’t approve of experimenting with a first time head coach with a conference finals caliber team! Being a head coach is a different ball game then being the assistant. The teams play reflects the head coach personality!

Bottom line Hawks fans will never be satisfied until the Hawks are world champs. We are a small nation that will never agree on what route the organization needs to take to become world champs. Period.
Some fans wanted Avery Johnson, some fans didn’t.
Some fans wanted Mark Jackson, some fans didn’t.
Some fans wanted Dwane Casey, some fans didn’t.
Some fans wanted Larry Drew, some fans didn’t.
Some fans wanted Mike Woodson, some fans didn’t.
Some fans wanted ____________, some fans didn’t.
It’ s clear that whatever coaching decision the ASG/Rick Sund made some fans were not gonna agree because the choice could only be one and not all of the above and whoever else the fans wanted.
One thing most everyone involved with the Hawks could agree on is the team needed a coaching change. Guess what? The change happened in the form of Larry Drew.
Now that the team has a coach, it’s time to move on to getting the most out of the draft and free agency.
Go Hawks! Go Head Coach Larry Drew! ♥

Ken Strick,
Great post. I endorse all you said. I can’t imagine why the majority of us would have a problem with Drew when we have not even seen him coach a game. Can’t say I am surprised as history is replete with examples of “fair-weather” ATL fans in all sports. Just look at 2 years ago with the Falcons and what are we saying now about Mike Smith and the Falcons? I guess the expectations have risen to the ceiling there.
I wish Drew and the Hawks nothing but the best for the future and you can bet I’ll be cheering and supporting them for all 82 next year and into the post season. We have a relatively young and athletic core of players and we have not used our strongest feature to our advantage because of the philosophy of our previous coach. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate what Woody did for us but he was clearly unable to take us to the next level and we had to move on.
I also challenge anyone who is going to judge Drew because he worked under Woody. I certainly hope for their sake that if they are up for a promotion in their own jobs, that they will not be evaluated based on their previous supervisor and or manager’s performance.
I honestly think it will be a new approach by Drew and after 14 years of learning in the “catbird” seat, he can bring a lot to the HC’ing position for the Hawks. I am also sure he will utilize his assets in a much better way.
I am looking forward to the new season and hope we can get a good centre and one more dead-eye shooter.

I guess all the HIGH PROFILE coaches are going to split the trophy this year. Just because you have a HIGH PROFILE coach does not mean you are going to win the trophy. Give the man a shot..I went to 36 out of 42 home games last year & it sure look like Woody was calling all of the stupid calls in the heat of the moment. He decided to keep running ISO Joe not Drew. Now to the 26 year Hawks fan that is a fan no more because of the coach that has not coached a game yet!… you must of lost your job or something & can’t afford to go to the games anymore & need a good excuse to tell your friends why you dont go to the games anymore. Hornets to Make Collison Available?
Posted: 6/12/2010 9:01:00 AM
Source: Marc Stein of ESPN.com
Rival executives will continue to try to convince the Hornets to make Chris Paul available in trades, pointing to the fact that Williams can simply slide the promising Darren Collison and his modest $1.4 million salary into that spot. When those teams get shot down, look for the Hornets — based on the hints we’ve received from more than one exec — to make Collison available as long as the interested party is willing to take back the cap-clogging contract of Emeka Okafor, James Posey or Peja Stojakovic with Paul’s backup.
Williams legitimately does rank as one of the league’s better bench prospects. He got his start in under Gregg Popovich in San Antonio’s 2004-05 championship season and quickly progressed to the point where he was doing a fair bit of the in-game coaching for Nate McMillan in Portland this season after an Achilles tear cost McMillan much of his mobility

Crawford, like JJ, also perpetuates the lack of ball movement on offense.
There are benches like PHX that can do it all, score, come back from deficits, and defend to be successful.
Then there are benches like the Lakers, who can score somewhat, but are most comfortable keeping leads or keeping deficits close. They don’t put up insane numbers, they just win games.
Then there are benches like the Hawks, in which scoring consists of Jamal Crawford and which defending consists of Zaza Pachulia. Jamal’s weakness as a defender does not off set his inconsistent offense.

We aint the celtics and this aint about the celtic or how to help orlando get pass the celtic. Its about the Hawks weakness not orlando’s
We lost because we could not respond to anything in the paint we also struggled against an average team in the post (milwaukee)
To use how Boston was able to match and cancel out orlando’s strenght with better personnel does not make atlanta any more competitive and puts us no closer to the championship round. The question is not why did orlando lose to the celtics the question is why did the Hawks struggle inside against Milwaukee and get dominated in the post against orlando. At the least be relevant.

Question: IS THIS A CHAMPIONSHIP LEVEL FAN BASE?
I think we all know the question to that.
For all of the people that just expect this ownership group to go out and spend money, that’s the question that Hawk fans need to ask ourselves. Are we a championship level fan base?
HAWKS ATTENDANCE NUMBERS:
Home wins: 34
Home wins the last 2 seasons: 65 . . ( tied for best 2-year mark in franchise history )
Avg home attendance 2010: 16,545 . . ( 18th in the league )
Avg home attendance 2009: 16,748 . . ( 20th in the league )
Avg home capacity % 2010: 88.3% . . ( 19th in the league )
Ave home capacity % 2009: 89.4% . . ( 20th in the league )
******************************
There have been those on this board who have said . . . “win, and they will come”. Well . . they/we came a little LESS this year, despite us having a better product on the floor. So a harsh reality is going to have to be realized by this fan base. Especially the hard core fans in the fan base.
You CAN’T expect management to go ALL OUT to build a championship product, if the fans don’t make more of a commitment to go to the games. 12 of the top 13 teams in home capacity % made the playoffs. And they all had capacity percentages above 95%. This means that the revenue was flowing on a nightly basis. And most of those teams had higher ticket prices than we do.
This year, our capacity % was on the level of the New Orleans Hornets, whose season was decimated with the loss of Chris Paul. Last year, our capacity % was 20th, while the Hornets capacity level was 8th ( at 98.7% ) . . when they were a playoff level team that won 49 games.
If fans are waiting on the Hawks to have a championship caliber team, before they really throw their support behind them, then we might be waiting forever. Without tremendous fan support at home, we really can’t expect management to go to that next level to put the type of team on the floor that we all want.
That’s the reality of the situation.
****************
I tried to tell ya’ll.
Congrats to Larry Drew. He will have my full support. And if the players are still messing up, like they did under Woody, I’ll defend Drew the same way I did Woody.
The history of this league shows that merely doing a coaching change is not enough. Personnel has to change as well, in order for the new coach to be successful.

Listen to this woman people.
LOL . . and I don’t know where the arrogance comes from either. Like there is some long history of winning around here to the point that even small steps of success is not enough.
Almost every team in the history of the NBA has had to go through what we’re going through right now, before we got to a championship level.
But Dr. Mary is right. We have to upgrade this roster, especially the bench. That bench, for as much as people want to blame Woody for not playing them, was absolutely horrible for most of the year ( outside of Jamal ). LOL . . that’s the reason why they didn’t play.
After Sund resolves the JJ issue ( for better or for worse ), he MUST upgrade the rest of the team. We need some people who are either going to make Mo and Zaza play harder in order to stay in the rotation . . or be better than Mo and Zaza to keep them off the floor.
