Johnson headed to Nets, not Hawks.
One coaching candidate down for the Hawks, three still in the mix.
The Associated Press reported that Avery Johnson says he’s agreed to coach the Nets. Johnson told the AP the team is expected to announce the news on Thursday.
Johnson was among four candidates the Hawks have been considering as the replacement for Mike Woodson. With Johnson apparently out of the running, general manager Rick Sund and Atlanta’s ownership group now will choose from among Dwane Casey, Larry Drew and Mark Jackson.
Casey is a Dallas assistant coach and former head coach in Minnesota. Drew was an assistant under Woodson, who was let go after six seasons. Jackson, a television broadcaster, hasn’t been a coach at any level but was a long-time NBA point guard.
A person with knowledge of the process said Hawks management is still considering all three candidates and will make a decision soon. The Hawks, Cavaliers and Clippers are the only teams yet to name a head coach.

Of course Belichiek denies this! And, everybody in prison is INNOCENT! They didn’t do it either!
I don’t have time to research for you, but look it up: Belicheik-sp, was either fined or suspended one game (I forget which one- I think he was fined!). But, in essence, some disgruntled – probably fired employee from the media room, was the whistle blower, he had the tapes top prove his claim & Roger Gooddell-sp, had irrefutable evidence. Therefore Belichiek was fined handsomely.
Look it up, Terrell….you can’t make this stuff up – it’s too unfathomable!
LOL! Later, I have got to go pay some bills! Really, I do! -smiles-

The Hawks need to hire a coach with no ties to management.Since the choices are slimming down bring in Mark Jackson. The guy will do all he can to bring in the right formulas to push the hawks farther in the playoffs.Jackson has a background of being successful as a player and i feel he will be a great fit as coach.Casey and Drew seem like they are good guys but that doesn’t resignate with players just ask Woody about that.Jackson will assemble a team that these fans will love to watch and the players have a better chance to play harder for Jackson than the other guys.

Yes they did take their (ultra-talented team) to the Conference Finals & were immediately fired for not taking that same team to the Championship Game! Why? Well, because the goal is to:
WIN! Not almost – WIN! Also, it’s not whether you Win or Lose! It’s HOW you play the game!
Their terrible coaching decisions on the world’s largest stage was unacceptable by their organizations and therfore – they went Fishin’. Go back and read the records!
Mr. Woodson & Mike Brown were fired for the exact same reasons! Those losses should still be fresh in your memory. Woody didn’t make adjustments, nor utilize his bench! Mike Brown had the best player (allegedly) in the world & made terrible substitutions or LeBron quit on him. Either way, they’re gone!
Avery & Byron had player upheavals every where they have been! Players, don’t need an iron fist & whips!
This ain’t ROOTS! Kunta-Kinte is dead!
Great communicators, great game plans and great motivators WIN Rings!

Well said drmaryb, I just can’t see Casey or Drew bringing the hawks to the next level.I don’t like Mark’s New York drawl but i bet you he got a better game plan and resume than the other gentlemen.Who in the world wants Mike Brown and Lil G as their head coach hiring either of those guys is like taking a shower and putting the dirty drawls you pulled off right back on.Some of you dirty jokers probably think nothing is wrong with that, but these fans want to move ahead and not go backwards.

All this time I’ve believed that Avery Johnson is a good coach. Is he the best fit? I don’t know. I don’t think he would have been, but I don’t get paid for my non-expert opinion, either.
And that’s just it: the key word here is FIT .
People continuously talk about the concept of getting a coach who is superior to Woodson. Superior in what way, exactly? A coach with a better overall record? A coach who has been to the playoffs more times? A coach who has gone further or done more in the playoffs? What’s the barometer or measurement for this?
Woody doesn’t have a winning overall record, so arguably you could say that any coach with a record better than his, is a superior coach, right? Or would that be a superficial statement? Lenny Wilkens has one of the best overall records in the history of NBA coaches. Would you want to raise him from the dead and let HIM coach this team? Okay, so he’s not really dead, but he dang sure looks like it…and really, would you want him coaching here?
How do we really identify a coach who is better than Woody? Woody’s record is bad partially because when he took over, this team was in total rebuild mode. At the same time, I also think he took this team as far as it could go as presently constructed. Maybe with another superstar he could have done better. But guess what? That theory also doesn’t hold water, because we just don’t know and couldn’t prove it. If you want an example, then look at former Cavs coach Mike Brown.
Why would you assume that Mike Brown is a better coach than Woody? Mike Brown had Lebron James. That’s more than Woody ever had. But Lebron wasn’t enough, so they added all-star pg Mo Williams. Still wasn’t enough, and it seems the Cavs actually got worse, as they couldn’t make the NBA Finals. So, the Cavs added Shaq, Anthony Parker, Jamario Moon, and all-star Antawn Jamison. The result? The Cavs didn’t even make the Eastern Conference Finals, which was a worse showing than last year. So how is Mike Brown superior to Woody?
If he is, then the facts of what happened with Brown and the Cavs would suggest that Woody wouldn’t do any better if you added a couple more good players (and big centers) to the team. Right?
Again, FIT is what we’re looking for. A better fit. Personally, I think neither Woody nor the team was ready for the next step. We don’t have all the right guys on the roster, and Woody didn’t have the attention of the guys who are on the roster. That’s a bad mix.
Fact is, we probably won’t have Joe next year. That automatically changes things and all but guarantees we won’t win as many games. But we still have a chance to become a better TEAM in the end. It’s something we need to do, regardless of whether or not Joe remains here. Woody could not get that done. We’re hoping a new coach can guide the necessary change in culture and chemistry. Not make it happen, but guide it. Get guys to buy into the total team concept. This is part of what coaches do.
So do we need to identify and acquire a coach that is “superior” to Woody? No. We need a guy who is a better fit and can help change the culture and direction of this franchise, if Joe Johnson is here, and if he isn’t.
If he is, we have to find a way to be more competitive in the postseason. If not, then more realistic goals have to bet set and achieved.
And NO, this is not lowering expectations. It’s being realistic and avoiding the sour grapes of cynical sore loser-ism…

Yea ray I realized a few weeks back he just wasn’t the type of guy you can have a logical discussion with….. As far as Avery Johnson goes, he wanted the Hornets job but when he informed them that he wanted a larger role as far as management they decided they did not want him.. After that his second choice was the Nets. This is old news people. It was in the papers weeks ago. I think Avery was just being a class act and interviewed with the Hawks while he waited on the Nets. The Nets owner wanted Avery and this was reported before Avery interviewed with the Hawks. I guess he was just waiting on them to make their move.
And the truth shall set you free

Avery Johnson Has Much To Prove
Avery Johnson’s meteoric rise to the ranks of the NBA’s best coaches was really something to see. He went from player to assistant coach in the Dallas Mavericks organization, and his insistence on defense – born, no doubt, of his tenure in San Antonio – took a team that was already good and made them championship contenders. He took the Mavericks to the NBA Finals in his first full season at the helm of the team, and though they lost to Miami’s tandem of Shaquille O’Neal and Dwyane Wade, the Mavericks had just the right mix of young talent and veterans around MVP Dirk Nowitzki and seemed poised to embark on a lasting era of greatness. Johnson was named Coach Of The Year.
Unfortunately, things didn’t work out that way. A miscalculation on Johnson’s part sent the Mavericks home early in 2007, when they were the West’s top seed and lost to the eighth-seeded Golden State Warriors. Johnson intentionally lost a game that set up his team’s meeting with Golden State, and Warriors head coach Don Nelson knew exactly how to beat his former team. Nowitzki would be named MVP that season, but it was small concession as his team packed it in for the summer.
The following season Mavericks owner Mark Cuban decided to blow up the team. He did it in dare-to-be-great fashion, trading budding All-Star point guard Devin Harris to the New Jersey Nets for future Hall-Of-Famer Jason Kidd, but that move would turn out to be the one that ultimately ended Johnson’s career in Dallas. Johnson wasn’t happy to see his protégé traded away, and especially not for the slow-footed, defensively-challenged Kidd. The Mavericks would again be ousted in the first round, this time by the New Orleans Hornets, and Johnson and the Mavs agreed to part ways shortly thereafter.
In the wake of Johnson’s departure there were rumblings from the players about how Avery’s ego had gotten out of control, and his Cajun drawl had gotten a little shriller after the Coach Of The Year award. The man who had successfully balanced fiery passion and Christian humility seemed to lose his ability to balance the two, and his players lost faith in the man who took them to heights the franchise had never seen. Now, two years removed from coaching, Johnson will get the chance to show he wasn’t just a flash-in-the-pan. He’s about to be reunited with Devin Harris, and together they hope to lead the Nets from the NBA’s basement back to respectability.
It sounds like a dream-come-true scenario . . .Johnson has a chance to prove to the world that he was right about Harris, and to lead a new team with both a promising young core, a high draft pick, plenty of cap space and an owner who’s ready to use it from the shadows back into the light. It’s a situation tailor-made for someone looking to win another Coach Of The Year award. Taking the Nets from the league’s worst team to the playoffs seems like a very achievable proposition, and doing so would go a long way towards justifying all the hype surrounding Johnson’s return to the coaching ranks this season.
Of course, every golden opportunity is accompanied by a chance to fail miserably. Potential is a wonderful thing as long as it’s realized. Failing to live up to potential, on the other hand, can be the death nail for someone in professional sports. The Nets job seems like a dream come true for Avery Johnson and his young apprentice, but if they fail to live up to the hype it could spell the end of Avery Johnson’s career in coaching.

To those that thought Sund somehow fumbled the ball with Avery Johnson may want to rethink. According to this report, Johnson’s heart was not with the Hawks but desired the Nets all along. Perhaps if the Nets had passed on him, he would have asserted the Hawks by default. You may ask; why would someone prefer a lotto team over a 3rd seeded (53 win) team? Beside from maybe better contract terms and roster of players, I would also speculate that it will be less pressure on him in NJ to be successful. His path will be very similar to Woody’s path when he was the new Hawks coach some 5 years ago. It will be a lot easier to improve from 12 wins as the Nets coach compared to trying to reach the finals and winning a title on a tight budget and thin bench as the new Hawks coach.

SMH @ the blog.
I would bet $100 that people would’ve been highly upset 4 weeks ago, if you’d told them that our head coaching search would come down to Casey, Drew, and Mr. “Hand down . . man down” Jackson.
Seriously? These are the replacements for Woody? LOL . . WOW.
But like everything else in Atlanta, those coaches have “potential”. As long as they have “potential”, everything will be alright.
Don’t people in ATL get tired of using that word?
But this what just about all of you wanted. Get anybody in here BUT WOODY, to run the squad. The prevailing notion is that ANYBODY should be able to coach better than Woody. So people shouldn’t even be upset who we hire . . . even if it’s an NBA color commentator with no coaching experience.
It speaks VOLUMES about the perception of this team . . when we can win 50+ games . . fire the coach . . . search for another coach . . . and have the main guy we’re looking at, opt to take a coaching position with the WORST TEAM IN THE NBA.
With the way they’ve handled this coaching search, I can’t wait to see how they handle the draft.
LOL . . . if an ABC color commentator is our new head coach, all i could say to that is woooooooooooooooowwwwwwww.

BOSTON — The Hawks are close to making an offer for their head coaching position, with strong indications that Mavericks assistant Dwane Casey will be the choice, sources told CBSSports.com Thursday. But one of the sources cautioned that some members of the organization remain undecided among the candidates Atlanta has interviewed who are still available: Casey, Mark Jackson and assistant coach Larry Drew.
A decision is expected by the end of the weekend, with the Hawks scheduled to host pre-draft workouts on Monday, sources said. One person involved in the process said that all signs pointed to the Hawks moving forward with an offer to Casey as of mid-day Thursday. But later in the day, another person familiar with the situation said there was no final decision.
The team has yet to extend a formal offer, and the negotiation with Casey could take longer than expected given that his agent, Warren LeGarie, is traveling to the West Coast from Europe. The process has been delayed due to Jackson’s broadcast schedule during the NBA Finals and the travel schedules of key members of the Hawks’ ownership group. The indecision is the latest example of how difficult the decision-making process is for the Hawks, whose diverse ownership group is scattered among Atlanta, Washington, D.C., and Boston.
Casey has been the favorite to replace Mike Woodson from the beginning of the Hawks’ search, given his working relationship with GM Rick Sund dating to their days together in Seattle, when Casey was associate head coach under Nate McMillan and Sund was the GM. CBSSports.com reported May 20 that it was Casey’s job to lose.
Drew, a loyal member of Woodson’s staff, has emerged as a strong in-house option in the past two weeks. If the Hawks decide to enter negotiations with Casey, it is believed that Drew would be amenable to staying with the Hawks as Casey’s top assistant. His relationship with the existing players, especially headstrong forward Josh Smith, would make him a valuable asset to Casey during the transition period.
In addition to Casey, Jackson and Drew, the Hawks also interviewed Portland assistant Dean Demopoulos and former Mavs coach Avery Johnson, who was named coach of the Nets Thursday.

MELVIN-BIG RAY mentioned earlier that AJohnson just might have preferred to take over a losing team because it would place far less pressure on him to win right away. It would allow him to progress in increments, like Woodson did. He’s already experienced the problems and pressures associated with taking over an established team with high expectations of winning. After losing in the finals his 1st full season, he got out coached and his team got eliminated in the 1st rd by far lesser teams his 2 subsequent yrs.
If you pay attention, you will understand the wisdom in what he did. Avery Johnson is a better HC than Mike Woodson, and he’s accomplished more than Woodson, including winning a divisional and conference title and COY, while never having anything close to a losing season. Yet, with all of his accomplishments, he got fired after his 3rd full season, and Woodson made it to his 6th full season. YOU FIGURE OUT WHY.

also rondo, you should not pray vain prayers to god.you never pray and ask god for these kinds of prayers..asking to let someone win for something that is not about god is a vain prayer i would not ever pray a prayer like that.god will turn deaf ears to those kind of prayers.

cdog – *drmaryb* There was nothing to forgive;
but if there was,
she would already have done so.
Don’t mind her salty tongue / I have one as well.
I try very hard to contain it on this board.
Young-uns frequent this community.
she has a good heart and that is what matters.

No more excuses!! To those fans that won’t take a position on Casey because they have not heard him give an interview, listen in and decide if you still want this guy. Take everything in account including his basketball knowledge and his temperament as the possible next head coach of the Hawks.

Rondo:
Lets play basketball chess.

Lets search for *the TRUTH* together.

Whatever it is let’s go find it.
Sounds like fun.
Does it have anything to with basketball.
Basketball is my life’s passion !
I can’t wait.
I’ll go 1st > e4
