Atlanta Hawks: ASG vs. Russian mogul for Avery Johnson? (UPDATE: Mark Jackson gets a shot)

Might take a lot of cash to get him. (AP Photo)

Might take a lot of cash to get him. (AP Photo)

(Friday update: Mark Jackson will get a chance to convince Hawks owners he should be the next head coach. He’ll have some work to do to persuade everyone in the Hawks’ hierarchy he can do the job with no prior coaching experience but it’s significant that he will get to make his case. Part of Jackson’s pitch includes this 2008 academic study on successful NBA players also doing well as coaches.)

When the Hawks started their coaching search it looked like Avery Johnson was the hot, big-name candidate. As it turns out, Celtics assistant Tom Thibodeau seems to be the key horse in the coaching carousel.

Now that Thibodeau reportedly turned down the Hornets and favors Chicago’s opening, it looks like Johnson is the favorite in New Jersey. When Johnson’s name first surfaced with the Hawks, the perception was that they wouldn’t spend the money to hire him. The Hawks dispute that notion, but if they really want Johnson they might have to put up the cash to prove it since Nets billionaire owner Mikhail Prokhorov is so free-spending that he might be willing to lure Phil Jackson by topping his $12 million salary with the Lakers.

Getting back to Thibodeau, it’s interesting how he’s become a hot commodity. Obviously a lot of that has to be due to his reputation as a defensive specialist and his role in Boston’s success. But I’m also guessing that it’s because teams feel like they can get a good coaching prospect relatively cheaply and, as a bonus, gain the kind of buzz that gets fans excited even though he’s never been a head coach.

Dwane Casey has been a head coach before but he hasn’t generated the same kind of enthusiasm from the masses. Though Casey is said to stress developing a defensive culture , it’s hard to draw firm conclusions from his results as head coach of Minnesota. The T-Wolves were roughly the same in defensive efficiency during his first season of 2005-06 as they were the year before though they made significant improvements in effective field-goal percentage allowed and rebounding percentage. But it’s not really an equivalent comparison since only four of Minnesota’s top eight players in 2005-06 were the same as from 2004-05: Kevin Garnett, Trenton Hassell, Wally Szczerbiak and Eddie Griffin.

In Atlanta, Casey would inherit a group that has the physical talent to be a good defensive team but lacked the commitment. Woody talked a lot about defense and tried to create an atmosphere where players valued it as much as him but, from what I saw in my short time here, they never bought into it consistently. The assumption seems to be Atlanta will be a better offensive team simply by virtue of a change in approach and accountability but I think the defensive end is going to take a lot more work. The team’s personality is such that it’s going to be a challenge for the new coach to demand good defense and get it all the time.

Anyway, I’ve heard Garnett and Rashard Lewis both swear by Casey. Lewis, whom Casey tutored while an assistant in Seattle, recently endorsed his old coach. From Steve Aschburner at NBA.com:

“He’s a great coach. He’s a gym rat. He made sure I worked on my game all the time. He knows the X’s and O’s. He was a great assistant coach when he did the scouting report. He’s just one of those guys who eats, sleeps basketball.”

Big Ray I don’t even know why I’m surprised by some of these post. We get them every summer. I went and checked Felton stats again and he does average almost 3 turnovers per game for his career. Tony I have chalked it up as you not knowing what you’re talking about. The fact that you said Teague is a shooter killed all your credibility.. And what the hell did Eric Maynor do last year that was so impressive?

Marvin Williams wasn’t a power forward. Horford wasn’t a center. Acie Law wasn’t a point guard. Teague wasn’t a point guard.

The Hawks have a history of drafting players that don’t fit there needs.

Big Ray,

Somebody even suggested that woody should feel disrespected Because while he was on the way to 53 wins, sund and the ASG had the audacity not to offer him an extension during the season.

I’m still waiting on woody’s name to pop up for job interviews for a head coaching position. He was a good defensive assistant head coach in Detroit, but who wants him to coach their defense when his hawks teams were not known for defense?

Danny Ferry is an epic failure. He resigned because he doesn’t want to be around the miserable, overpriced, soft team he built when Lebron leaves. They had an unlimited amount of money to keep lebron and win a championship. He needed to get Amare but couldn’t make it happen.

Antawn Jamison? Failure. ($40m over 3 years)
Shaq? Failure. ($20m in 2999-2010)
Ben Wallace? Failure. ($14.5m in 2008-2009)
Taking back Z? Failure. ($10.8m in 2008-2009)
Anthony Parker? Failure. ($3m)
Wally Sczerbiak? Failure. ($13m in 2008-2009)
Mo Williams? Highly overrated failure. ($8m/yr)

What did Teague do last year? Maynor is not the only player I mentioned. Maynor brought more to the table than Jeff Teague. cp how about chalking up some stats instead of running off at the mouth sir. Najeh how many Bobcats games have you watch? I think you are just running off at the mouth to. Say what you want but Felton is better than what we have on our current roster. If you people want to believe that teague is a true point guard that’s you business. We currently have 4 shooting guards and no point guards on our current roster.

By the way, I don’t want a GM who quits his job. I don’t know why Ferry quit, but he did. That doesn’t make me want him to come here. Big Ray, last I heard they traded Maynor for financial reasons. What about Darren Collison? In the beginning he was the one I was lobbying for last season. 1)Darren Collison, 2)Eric Maynor and 3)Jrue Holiday. If we don’t sign Raymond Felton we should sign Chris Duhon. Either one of those young men will make our team better.

Big Ray

June 4th, 2010
4:27 pm

Tony,

It’s true, but if the kid was good enough, that wouldn’t have happened. Besides, how much could they possibly save by moving a rookie contract that was only in it’s first year?

Collison can play and so can Jrue Holiday. Both got far more playing time than Teague did. Why? CP3 was injured in New Orleans, or you would have seen Collison glued to that bench. In Philly, Jrue got time because Louis Williams is really a SG, but more importantly, he too was injured.

Teague would have seen playing time only if Bibby went out and stayed out. Woody would not have done it any other way.

Bobcats can keep Felton, he’s an upgrade over Bibby, but his ceiling has already been reached. Duhon is a good option off the bench.

From Hoopsworld:

14. Raymond Felton (Unrestricted) – I’ve bumped Felton up a few spots on the list due to the scarcity of quality point guards in this FA class. Among current free-agent point guards, Felton is literally the only career starter (other than the aging Derek Fisher) available on the open market this summer. Raymond’s production over his short NBA career has been underwhelming, considering his pedigree and expectations entering the League. Nonetheless, with so many teams desperate for a decent PG (New York tops the list), Felton will likely land a nice payday somewhere.

That’s the concensus on Felton…

Big Ray

June 4th, 2010
4:53 pm

Udonis Haslem (Unrestricted) – His stats will never jump off the page and wow anyone, he seems a bit undersized to bang with NBA power forwards, and his game is anything but aesthetically pleasing, but ask superstars in the league if they want a guy like Udonis Haslem on their team and they will unanimously answer “Yes, please.” Haslem is a banger and a boarder and an enforcer. He is one of those rare players that can positively impact a game despite never having to run a play for him. Last season, he put his ego aside and came off the bench in Miami, which may be an ideal role for him going forward. If he can be had at the right price, Haslem could be a real steal for a shrewd GM this summer.

He’s not a center, but he sure would help out down low.

“Nets’ owner has money to spend on Avery Johnson as coach. Can ASG compete?”

The short answer is no. Why? Because the Hawk’s ownership group isn’t going to pay over $2 million for a coach and Avery wants at least $3 mill.
All of these interviews lead to the speculation that there is a split as to who the coach will be. Sund, the 3rd choice of an organization that is short on finances and long on internal conflict, clearly wants his boy,Casey. But it appears that others-read the Gearons ,Sr & Jr, are not sold on him. so the charade continues while the draft approaches.

Big Ray

You’re right. Danny Ferry presided over a team that features the NBA’s biggest star, an all-star pg, added an all-star PF by the trade deadline, a 3 man rotation at center of nobody shorter than 7 feet (featuring Shaq), a roster that goes 10 deep on a BAD night, and they didn’t even make it to the Eastern Conference Finals. Yep, definitely a grand picture of success. How long was Ferry on the job in Cleveland? I know it was more than two years. And they haven’t won the big one with…AGAIN…the NBA’s brightest star, and quite a bit more help than the Hawks have ever had.

What then, makes Sund a failure, when he’s only been here two years and has never had the resources Ferry has had, much less the superstar (unless of course you’re going to tell me JJ is anywhere near as good as Lebron)?

If Sund is a loser until he proves his worth, then what is Ferry? Make sense of this for me, in a logical manner.

Right now, all I’m seeing and hearing is that Sund firing Woody makes him a loser. If that’s your argument, then we probably need go no further….

Have any of you ever heard of the expression “If it is not broke don’t fix it!” Why no love for Teague, man? We don’t even know what we have in Teague, yet. You guys keep trying to trade Josh Smith, Marvin Williams, Big Al Horford, and now Jeff Teague. And to make matters worse for second tier players like Eric Maynor, Darren Collison, and Jrue Holliday. Better yet Gortat, or some other backup fodder. And just to make my point, as Big Ray mentioned Scotty Brooks. Scotty Brooks and OKC are the perfect example of what the Hawks are not and why Scotty doesn’t have to worry about his two year extension. Brooks actually coaches his team they play hard and Durant, Green, and Westbrook are fearless offensive players who defend with the same resolve so Brooks doesn’t have to worry about his job as long as his young team continue to put forth that kind effort. I point this out to say don’t trade away any young talent until you bring in a competent coach to teach and evaluate the talent. A chef doesn’t empty his refrigerator before he cooks a gourmet meal. The chef takes inventory and supplements what he already has in his pantry. So why get rid of or critique young talented players before a decent coach can teach or evaluate them? Stop putting the cart before the horse! Trade veteran garbage (Bibby), not assets our young core. Like someone mentioned earlier, even if you do trade young assets like Teague, Josh, or Marvin you will never get the value you have invested back from another team.

Hawks are Cheap,

I think the Hawks are waiting until after the NBA Championship Series is over before they hire a coach. They are waiting to see what Doc Rivers is going to do. If he retires from the Celtics, I believe ASG is going to go get Doc with all they have! Thibadeau will be the next Celtics coach if Doc leaves. If not, he will get the Bulls job. Phil will stay with the Lakers. Avery Johnson is probably going to the Nets. If the Hawks cannot get Rivers, then I think it is going to be Mark Jackson.

If Doc Rivers decides not to return to the Celtics next season, many believe that Kevin McHale may coach the team. A number of NBA coaching sources told ESPN.com’s Marc Stein that McHale would receive strong consideration for the job should Rivers walk away. Former NBA point guard and current ESPN analyst Mark Jackson has never coached in the NBA but he’s getting a second interview for the Atlanta Hawks head-coaching gig, according to AOL Fanhouse.

Heh, heh, heh. Yeah…you forget something? I’m a fan. I don’t run this team. My opinion counts for nothing. What I think the team should do has nothing to do with what the team WILL do.

I expect they know more than I do, so they’ll do as they please. Improving the team’s assist numbers aren’t all there is to making the team better. I think penetration, better ball movement, and better movement off the ball is a place to start.

Standing around like a bunch of statues while a guy penetrates or dribbes himself to death is not going to help. Guys have to move to their spots, set screens for each other, try to get open. Run a pick and roll. Teague will show what he can do in summer league, then in training camp.

If the new coach thinks he can get the job done, then he’ll get his shot. If he proves himself incapable or in need of more seasoning, then so be it. That’s why I agreed with getting a guy like Duhon. Bibby is a bench guy now, and he’s also a liability on defense.

The roster for next season is not yet set. We could see six new faces for all I know. Assuming that what we have now is what we’ll have come the start of the season is silly. We don’t even know who the coach is going to be, or what his philosophy will be, much less what he thinks about the point guard situation.

Unlike me, HIS opinion will count…

How many have you watched to be able to imply that Teague will not develop into the (very average) player that Felton currently is? Seems to me you’re the one running off at the mouth…

The funny thing is, I was actually in agreement with you about a year ago that Maynor would have been a better fit for this team as a pass-first point guard. I felt at the time that Teague was more of a combo guard and Maynor was more of a pure point. But from everything Teague showed this year, his passing ability is well ahead of his scoring ability. It’s still possible, and maybe even likely, that Maynor ends up the better pure point guard, but that certainly doesn’t mean Teague is not a point guard in his own right.

Najeh Davenpoop

And anyway, I’m pretty sure my post said that Felton is better than Bibby. Considering Teague’s lack of body of work and experience it’s probably fair to say that Felton is a better player than him at this point in time as well. That doesn’t mean Felton is worth a long-term investment to be the starting point guard for this team.

If you’re serious, Thats the worst idea ever.
Then he’s beholdin’ to the players.

To those who say JT cannot shoot:

Incorrect – altough perhaps not a pure shooter, then certainly a
capable to good shooter. He proved as much in college.
Last season he never had an opportunity to get in rhythm.
Anyone with knowledge of the game knows shootes have to shoot.
Plus shooting is confidence. Confidence = great shooters.
Woody was anything but a confidence builder.
All you have to do is watch his FT’s or look up his FT%.
His stroke is fine. Price needs to fix his feet, and he will be fine.
“It’s not how fast you shoot, it’s how fast you prepare to shoot.”
‘Don Meyer’
Again – footwork.

About Danny Ferry:
I’ve not read or heard.
However if he did quit – who could blame him. LbJ is runnin’ the show.
I would not want a to be the GM of a corporation & have to answer
to a 25 year old employee. Run everything by him & his cronies.
Twist & turn to his every whim. Nah.
Good for DF. / PS – They fired Brown against his [DF's]wishes.
He realized then, that he was no longer in charge.
Once again, if he quit, good for him.

LbJ – is just a big kid to whom GOD blessed with enormous talent.
He is not a winner. [a quitter ??? maybe]
To him the NBA is just his big ol’ * “play purty” *.
*(that’s country for toy)*
He does not possess the experience, knowledge, nor wisdom
to be wielding the kind of power he has at his disposal.
How many have witnessed him display these traits:
* thankfulness
* gratitude
* servitude
* obligation to those who went before him
* maturity
* humility
* intangibles (not skill) which make his teammates better
* loyalty – (we may see this one) Cleveland

I’m sorry for the rant – I’m gone for a while.
