Kevin Seraphin is one of the project centers who might be available to the Hawks in the draft.
Hawks assistant GM Dave Pendergraft watched dozens of college prospects throughout the season. When it ended, he was “excited” about the possibilities for the team’s No. 24 overall draft pick, figuring the Hawks would have several good prospects to choose from during the June 24 draft.
But then Pendergraft scrutinized Synergy Sports video and data, evaluated prospects’ workouts and interviews and took note of their physical measurements.
“Now, as things start to dwindle down, I’m really not so sure about that,” Pendergraft said today.
Pendergraft was fresh back from pre-draft workouts for 42 less-heralded prospects in Minneapolis this week. Of those players, Pendergraft said “a handful” were first-round material. With the Hawks picking near the bottom of the first round, those workouts plus the 23 prospects they plan to bring in between now and the draft are more important than the Chicago camp for top prospects (which have become less useful, anyway, with most players opting not to work out).
Pendergraft ranks the top five prospects, in order, as Kentucky’s John Wall, Ohio State’s Evan Turner, Kentucky’s DeMarcus Cousins, Georgia Tech’s Derrick Favors and Syracuse’s Wesley Johnson. He said one or two of those players will face a steep learning curve but that all should be good players by the end of the season.
After those five, he said the draft becomes “very, very hard to predict” but he thinks teams can find rotation players as low as No. 20 in the order, depending on their needs. “If that player is a worker, by the All-Star break they will be giving you some minutes,” he said.
The talent drops off after those top 15 or 20. So unless the Hawks move up in the order, Pendergraft doesn’t expect this draft to be deep enough for the Hawks to find a player who’s ready to contribute now.
“I think we will get a piece,” he said. “I don’t think we will necessarily get a rotational piece. We can get a player who after some seasoning can stay in the NBA for a while, that can make a career out of it. If we can keep our roster intact I don’t see a lot of playing time. It will be a situation where we take advantage of our D-League affiliate.”
The Hawks have rarely used the D-League: Othello Hunter and Thomas Gardner played a couple games there in 2008-09 but that’s the only time in four years the Hawks sent their young players down to get burn.
Because of the low expectations for the 24th pick, Pendergraft said Joe Johnson’s future has no bearing on the Hawks’ draft preparations. They aren’t going to draft a wing player who can come in and play, anyway, so if Johnson leaves they’ll need to find a veteran to fill that role.
The Hawks were in the market for a shooter at the trade deadline and later had interest in signing free agent center Zydrunas Ilgauskas. Now they’d like to find a shooter or big man in the draft.
Word out of Chicago and Minneapolis was that the center group’s measurements were disappointing as a whole. “I think that happens every year,” Pendergraft said. “They never measure as tall as you want them to measure.”
At least one mock draft predicts the Hawks will select center Kevin Seraphin, who measured 6-9 without shoes and has a 7-3 wingspan.
“Unfortunately, the big bodies that fall to us will be more in the project range,” Pendergraft said. “You have to look at NBA free agents [at center] and say they probably are a better way to go. But if we are going to pick a skill, a need, we need one more shooter.”
Is this draft deep with shooters?
“No,” Pendergraft said. “That’s the [freakin'] problem. There are bunch of guards but not a lot of shooters. There are some good players but they can’t make shots. And the better shooters can’t play a lick of defense.”
The next important evaluation period for the Hawks is another pre-draft camp in New Jersey June 9-11. The Hawks will start bringing in prospects for workouts on Jan. 13 and continue to do so up until June 22.
“Coming into this thing I thought there would be maybe six or seven guys there at [No. 24],” Pendergraft said. “Now that’s shrunk a little bit to maybe three or four. But you never know. The good thing is it’s not going to make or break us because we’ve got good players coming back.”

NEW CARS, YOU’RE RIGHT WITH SOME THINGS YOU MENTIONED BUT KNIGHT AND WOODSON WAS IN A REBUILDING STAGE.NO GM OR COACH CAN PUSH THE RIGHT BUTTONS AND WIN EVERYTIME.YES, THEY MISSED A FEW BUT THEY PUT THE HAWKS TOGETHER PIECE BY PIECE WHICH TURN INTO A CHAMPIONSHIP CONTENDER UNTIL RICK SUND CAME ALONG..SUND CAME INTO A GRAVY TRAIN PUT TOGETHER BY KNIGHT BUT BECAUSE OF HIS STUPIDITY AND RACIST ATTITUDE, HE FIRED WOODSON FOR NO REASON. HE FAILED TO BRING PIECES NEEDED TO GET THE TEAM OVER THE HUMP TO PLAY FOR A CHAMPIONSHIP(A QUALITY BIG MAN)BECAUSE HE CHERISHES MONEY OVER A CHAMPIONSHIP.I BET DANNY AINGE WOULD NOT SIT BACK AND NOT BRING IN NECDCESSARY PERSONEL LIKE SUND DOES. THE CELTICS WERE LOSER UNTIL DANNY AINGE CAME IN AND BROUGHT THE NECCESSARY PIECS.HE’S IN POSITION TO WIN ANOTHER CHAMPIONSHIP.HE WOULD HAVE BEEN GOING FOR 3 IN A ROW THIS YEAR IF GARNETT WOULD NOT HAVE WENT DOWN LAST YEAR.YOU SEE, WE HAVE A DUMMY FOR A GM WHO IS MORE CONCERN WITH MONEY THAN A CHAMPIONSHIP.UNTIL WE GET SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS IN, THE HAWKS WILL ALWAYS COME UP SHORT.LOOK AT SUND NOW, THE OBVIOUS CHOICE FOR A COACH IS AVERY JOHNSON.HE WILL NOT SIGN HIM BECAUSE HE JOHNSON WILL EXPOSE HIS LACK OF KNOWLEDGE TO YOU ALL.

Based on the Hawks’ draft history, the 24th pick is not worth much. But think about notable late first round draft picks in the last few years:
George Hill (26th pick took Tony Parker’s starting job in the playoffs)
Rajon Rondo (21st- enough said)
Goran Dragic( 45th!! If you watched the suns-lakers series enough said)
Aaron Brooks 26th (has put up 40+ in a game)
Courtney Lee (22nd- Started on last year’s Eastern Conference champs before being traded
David Lee (30th)
Kevin Martin (26th)
Sure, for every one of those guys there are 2 or 3 busts. But the fact is that these guys were drafted by a few smart organizations that win (San Antonio, Phoenix, Boston, etc). They probably also got to play some and develop (ahem ahem Woodson with Jeff Teague, Acie Law, etc)
A lot of people seem high in Jordan Crawford. I had season tickets for his freshman year at IU (before he transferred). He is very hot and cold, and I would not call him a high character player. I’ve read articles that the guy sometimes showed up Eric Gordon in practice (5th pick for the Clippers 2 years ago). But at the same time we called him slouch because he just seemed to hot dog it and not have the high energy/ intensity of a winner. After watching Josh Smith not get back on D and scowl through the magic series, I really think we need guys with grit and heart instead of looking at pure talent. Intangibles go a long way.
I doubt this would go through, but I’d like to see a sign and trade Joe for Stoudamire (get a 3rd team involved because they dont need a sg) , move al to 4, josh to 3, start crawford, pick up a 3 who can shoot because with josh at 3 we’d need a backup who can spread the floor more.

And just in your honor:

Also, OK is right. Get rid of Bibby. Dude is OVERWEIGHT, OUT OF SHAPE, AND NOT INTERESTED IN GETTING IN SHAPE. He had all the opportunity in the world to lose 15 pounds last summer and get in shape, but rather, he looks like Baron Davis, with 1/10th the skill (And B.Diddy isn’t that good anymore) and doesn’t even USE HIS SIZE TO CREATE AN ADVANTAGE
This is how you compete in the East without spending an ungodly amount of money:
1) Marvin + Mo for Hedo
2) Hire Avery
3) Get Avery to teach Teague how to play. If Rondo can develop a jumpshot, so can Teague
4) Resign Joe
5) Resign all our bench bigs (Collins, RandMo, J.Smith)
This is VERY simple to do. Hedo has bad trade value now and has years left on his contract. OH WAIT: SO DOES MARVIN. Marvin has FOUR years left and a PLAYER’S option on the 5th

i know that you have beaten some big health issues in the past and no reason to think you cant now. dr M B has given you a huge amount of stuff already to sift through so i will leave it at that. i also can offer some info on alternative supports that might help to if you wish.

It will be proposed 100 times over the next several days. Here’s a comparison. Who would you rather have?
Marvin is about to turn 24. 6′9″ 240 lbs. Shot 45% from floor, 30% from 3, and 82% from line. Avg’d 10 pts, 5 rebs, 1 asst. Makes $30M over next 4 years (4th yr is player option).
Hedo just turned 31. 6′10″ 220 lbs. Shot 41% from floor, 37% from 3, and 77% from lne. Avg’d 11 pts, 4 rebs, 4 asst. Makes $44M over next 4 years (4th yr is player option).
I’d rather have Marvin and the $3.5M a year difference in salary. Especially in the 3rd and 4th years of the contracts when Hedo will be 33 & 34.

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU WONDERFUL ATLANTA HAWKS FANS!!!!!!!!!!! At first, I intended to keep it to myself, but I remembered how much it helped me to have the support of my friends and family in my recovery from the stroke in suffered. In the grand scheme of things, this is no different.
I’ll attack this with the same determination and fervor I had in wanting Woodson fired(smile). I didn’t ask my doctor any questions when I had the chance, because I was too shocked. You go in looking to get the results of a routine biopsy, and you hear the word cancer, and it takes on an entirely different perspective when it’s you.
This might sound crazy, but my reason for wanting to know about the possible side effects is because I want to know if I’ll be able to effectively take care of the love of my life, a 94lb 9yr old female Doberman Pinscher, without help.
AGAIN, THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT AND CONCERN!!!!!

If we keep all of our draft picks and don’t make any moves I recommend that we take Eric Bledsoe if he is there at pick 24.. If he isn’t there then I say we get Sharron Collins from Kansas.. As much as some don’t believe it players that stay all 4 years in college transition to the pros well… I could see Sharron Collins having the same impact as Darren Collison had with New Orleans.. And hands down with our 2nd round pick I say we go get Dexter Pittman from Texas.. He is the 7ft version of Glenn Davis and would be a hell of a player for us.. And for the person that pointed out the trade scenario of Marvin Williams for Hedo.. I like that alot!!… Tell me what yall think about what I said please

Ken S. – Just got home.
“I didn’t ask my doctor any questions”
I would have reacted the very same.
I have a family member (physician) with whom I consulted
(discreetly) and gathered some info.
She said “your Dr. would answer alot of your questions.”
She continued – “you will need to find a:
“Urologist” who specializes in prostate cancer.”
He will lead you through this.
My surgeon [I have my own old age body parts] is wonderful.
He is also a friend.
If you would like, I will talk with him and find out
who is the best Urol./prost.spec. in the Atl.
Some of you guys seem to know how to communicate off-line.
If so clue me in, and I’ll get this info to you.
Also, not knowing your family situation, if you need any help;
such as transportation, etc. figure out a way to let me know.
I’m not blowin’ smoke, I mean it.

Ramon, I cannot argue with your Marvin comment but I also look at the numbers Jo Jo mentioned and I don’t think Marvin is a throw away player, at 24 Marvin has room for growth. Najeh,
I don’t know how deep the draft is. But I know there are guys who can provide a solid 10-1 2mpg when called upon. And its not like we are looking for a starter.
Teague was the 7th PG taken, and he will be competing for a starting job.
Come on hawks, do your research. Make a good pick, hire a good coach to coach him up, and hopefully the player will work his tail off trying to improve.

I would like to see how Marvin plays in the vaunted TRIANGLE. He does have a High B-ball IQ. He
Speaks very intelligently when interviewed. He is a system player, but never ONE play called for him to show his stuff! JJ always had the ball in Mr. Woodson’s play – book.
He may look different with a diff coach. He just seemed to float around on OFF. But, was always active on the boards & was an OK finisher & an above average perimeter defender. With his weak jumper? I would like to see him become a slasher like Tony Allen in Boston.

CDOG,
What’s with the racist comment…Seems like you might be the one with that problem…The fact is, Shelden Williams should never have been picked, Marvin Williams, Josh Childress, Josh Smith and Boris Diaw were all redundant unto each other, so we needed 2 of the four at most….Knight and Woodson are the ones that tied their fate to the likes of Speedy Claxton, Anthony Johnson, Ty Lue and Mike Bibby….If we were going to stretch on Shelden Williams, why didn’t we take Rajon Rondo since he was the perfect-fit point guard for the players in place…What big man was going to put us over the top that we could have gotten last year and where was he going to play…Sund picked up Crawford, Smith and Collins…Woody made the becision to not play Smith and Collins…In the end, I think if we can agree on one thing, it would be that we would be better off with a Ted Turner or Arthur Blank as owner, instead of the conglomerate that Sund needs to answer to…
The trick bag Sund faces going forward is the JJ situation…We are better now with JJ coming back, but I don’t know that we’ll be good enough to win unless the PG is infinitely better…In three years, JJ will be a 17 point a game hole on defense and we’ll be stuck with him….It’s a catch-22 that the best scenario is a sign-and-trade that was equivalant to what we gave up for him…a young player with potential (diaw) and a top 3 protected draft pick….Maybe Wilson Chandler or Sergio Rodriguez from the Knicks or Darren Collison from the Hornets…Just don’t know if I can watch 5-6 more years of ISO-Joe not lead this team..
And if Sund is so racist, then why is he interviewing coaches like Avery and Casey

It’s funny, I’ve managed to deal with this entire episode without any emotion, except for the initial shock at the doctors office. But I got caught up with emotion and had a good cleansing cry after reading the outpouring of good wishes. Fortunately for me, it’s in the early stages. My father wasn’t as lucky. It’s amazing how the same passion that’s often expressed in our disagreements can so quickly be transformed into such a positive and powerful force of positive energy. That positive energy is what I felt from all of you, and is what got to me emotionally.
REGARDLESS OF WHAT EVENTUALLY HAPPENS, I PROMISE ALL OF YOU I WILL DEAL WITH IT USING THE SAME POSITIVE ENERGY THAT’S ALIVE AND WELL IN THE ATLANTA HAWK NATION. MAY THE FORCE(POSITIVE ENERGY) BE WITH ALL OF US.
I’ve been too filled with anger over my inability, and the inability of so many like me, to get the HIFU treatment. It’s still considered experimental in this country and isn’t allowed. Yet, the procedure and equipment used to perform the procedure was developed in this country at the Univ of Indiana over 40yrs ago. They say it’s in stage 3 testing, although it’s being successfully used all over the world. American doctors have established off shore sites and are routinely performing the procedure, usually at, or in conjunction with resorts.
If you can afford the $20+K cost of the one time none invasive procedure that’s done on an outpatient basis, you can go to Mexico, the Caribbean, South Africa, South America, Canada, Europe or Asia to have it done, but not here. This country will allow doctors to burn and poison people with Chemo and radiation and cut them up with invasive surgery. Yet, although we routinely allow the use of ultrasound and ultrasound technology, this country won’t allow it’s use in the treatment of cancer.
Now I understand why the Republican party was so adamantly opposed to a health care reform bill. They, along with the FDA, have been bought by the health care, insurance and pharmaceutical industries. The goal of the FDA and the Republican party is to protect the investment and high profit levels these industries are accustomed to generating. And they are more than willing to do this at the expense of the average citizen, who can’t afford expensive out of pocket health care and are at the mercy of whatever treatment they decide to approve.
I guess I need to get off my soapbox and start talking basketball. If we lose JJ, what do you say to us picking up a trade exemption for him and using it to acquire CMagette. Then, we resign JChildress.

Best wishes Ken. I sat in a similar office a few weeks back awaiting results from my prostate biopsy. Fortunately (this time) my results came back negative.
My sense from your posts is you’re a battling cat. Before chatting with a few physicians who essentially conveyed the same sort of positiveness you heard earlier from doc, the mental anguish (for me) during the run-up to the biopsy was a tad bit trying. Information is power. Stay strong; prospects much better than in decades past.
BTW, a local biotech company (been in the metro region for less than a year) just gained FDA approval for a vaccine that promises to drastically reduce world-wide mortality from this disease.
