Kevin Seraphin is one of the project centers who might be available to the Hawks in the draft.
Hawks assistant GM Dave Pendergraft watched dozens of college prospects throughout the season. When it ended, he was “excited” about the possibilities for the team’s No. 24 overall draft pick, figuring the Hawks would have several good prospects to choose from during the June 24 draft.
But then Pendergraft scrutinized Synergy Sports video and data, evaluated prospects’ workouts and interviews and took note of their physical measurements.
“Now, as things start to dwindle down, I’m really not so sure about that,” Pendergraft said today.
Pendergraft was fresh back from pre-draft workouts for 42 less-heralded prospects in Minneapolis this week. Of those players, Pendergraft said “a handful” were first-round material. With the Hawks picking near the bottom of the first round, those workouts plus the 23 prospects they plan to bring in between now and the draft are more important than the Chicago camp for top prospects (which have become less useful, anyway, with most players opting not to work out).
Pendergraft ranks the top five prospects, in order, as Kentucky’s John Wall, Ohio State’s Evan Turner, Kentucky’s DeMarcus Cousins, Georgia Tech’s Derrick Favors and Syracuse’s Wesley Johnson. He said one or two of those players will face a steep learning curve but that all should be good players by the end of the season.
After those five, he said the draft becomes “very, very hard to predict” but he thinks teams can find rotation players as low as No. 20 in the order, depending on their needs. “If that player is a worker, by the All-Star break they will be giving you some minutes,” he said.
The talent drops off after those top 15 or 20. So unless the Hawks move up in the order, Pendergraft doesn’t expect this draft to be deep enough for the Hawks to find a player who’s ready to contribute now.
“I think we will get a piece,” he said. “I don’t think we will necessarily get a rotational piece. We can get a player who after some seasoning can stay in the NBA for a while, that can make a career out of it. If we can keep our roster intact I don’t see a lot of playing time. It will be a situation where we take advantage of our D-League affiliate.”
The Hawks have rarely used the D-League: Othello Hunter and Thomas Gardner played a couple games there in 2008-09 but that’s the only time in four years the Hawks sent their young players down to get burn.
Because of the low expectations for the 24th pick, Pendergraft said Joe Johnson’s future has no bearing on the Hawks’ draft preparations. They aren’t going to draft a wing player who can come in and play, anyway, so if Johnson leaves they’ll need to find a veteran to fill that role.
The Hawks were in the market for a shooter at the trade deadline and later had interest in signing free agent center Zydrunas Ilgauskas. Now they’d like to find a shooter or big man in the draft.
Word out of Chicago and Minneapolis was that the center group’s measurements were disappointing as a whole. “I think that happens every year,” Pendergraft said. “They never measure as tall as you want them to measure.”
At least one mock draft predicts the Hawks will select center Kevin Seraphin, who measured 6-9 without shoes and has a 7-3 wingspan.
“Unfortunately, the big bodies that fall to us will be more in the project range,” Pendergraft said. “You have to look at NBA free agents [at center] and say they probably are a better way to go. But if we are going to pick a skill, a need, we need one more shooter.”
Is this draft deep with shooters?
“No,” Pendergraft said. “That’s the [freakin'] problem. There are bunch of guards but not a lot of shooters. There are some good players but they can’t make shots. And the better shooters can’t play a lick of defense.”
The next important evaluation period for the Hawks is another pre-draft camp in New Jersey June 9-11. The Hawks will start bringing in prospects for workouts on Jan. 13 and continue to do so up until June 22.
“Coming into this thing I thought there would be maybe six or seven guys there at [No. 24],” Pendergraft said. “Now that’s shrunk a little bit to maybe three or four. But you never know. The good thing is it’s not going to make or break us because we’ve got good players coming back.”

Ramon,
Bibby will not be off the books next year. He will still have another year left. And our only chance of landing melo is in a sign and trade, because we will not be far enough under the cap.
Trading for hedo will be complicated, because toronto will probably not trade him until a sign and trade for chris bosh is completed.
And by that time, hawks need to be courting free agents and getting jj resigned.
I do like the idea of trading Marvin and Zaza though. We need a more physical backup center, and we need a shooter.

I think the best available shooters are Mike Miller, Kyle korver and jj redick (who is restricted ).
But last year, Mike Miller made $9.8 mil, Kyle korver made $5.2 mil, while jj redick made $2.9 mil.
Redick’s qualifying offer is $3.9 mil, But he will be the cheapest of all the options. Will Orlando match? I’m not sure, because they are way over the luxury tax, and they need to make changes.
Maybe Kyle korver will take the mid-level.

Further proof the Hawks staff sucks:
Bibby came into camp this year overweight and it’s obvious he’s out of shape. I repeated a MILLION times last summer he had to lose weight, but nothing happened. I tweeted Sekou who didn’t seem to care.
WHY IS NASH SO MUCH OLDER THAN THE OTHER PGS BUT IN SUCH BETTER SHAPE? BIBBY LOSE SOME WEIGHT U FAT LARD

Clyde, I think the Hawks could sign Miller/Korver for $3.5 million. Korver didn’t thrive with Jerry Sloan, so I’m sure his pay will be cut on the market. I love Miller’s game. However, Hedo’s play making ability at the forward position is something that I would think would be great beside JJ and Teague. I would be happy with Miller though if the Hawks added him. But I would rather use Marvin and Zaza’s contracts to acquire Hedo, so you still have free agent money to make a run at Haywood and a defensive minded wing (Brewer).

Hawks current rotation ( without JJ )
Horford
Smith
Marvin
Crawford
Teague
Zaza
Bibby
So the current holes with that lineup, is at wing ( shooter ), another big man ( center or PF ), possibly a playmaker at PG, and a slasher/defender at SF
LOL . . and that shows you how important JJ is to the Hawks. He’s functions as the shooter, the slasher/defender at SF, and the defacto PG.
So very true. Unfortunately, while such facts serve as a great boost for the “keep JJ at all costs” argument, they also double as an indictment of how this team has been built and coached. What? You don’t believe me?
Ask the Cleveland Cavaliers organization what it’s like to build around a guy who has to serve as so many things for one team. Ask them what it’s like to have a coach who can’t seem to quit running every single thing through, around, and for that one player, while not making other players fill some of those roles. While you’re at it, ask their fans how it feels to watch that system fail.
The fact that JJ is that important to this team is no comfort to me whatsoever. Why? Because if it doesn’t work when you do it with LEBRON FREAKIN’ JAMES, then it certainly is not the way to go with Joe Johnson, who I’m sure most will have no problem acknowledging as the lesser player of the two.
I’m far more concerned with the big picture. Tooting the JJ horn is all well and good, he’s a heck of a player. But as the Lebrons (soon to be known as the Cavs once again) can attest, you better be trying harder to put higher quality pieces around your top player and finding the best ways to use them, assuming he chooses to stay with the Hawks.
See to it that other roles/positions/duties are fulfilled and stop relying or calling upon one guy to do that many things for you. Hold other guys to high levels of accountability. Give them more responsibility. I’m sick of JJ playing pg. That is NOT the best way to use him.
And if he decides to leave, then retool this team. There will then be no choice than to play things differently.
I’d rather see JJ stay than not, but I can tell you this as well:
I’d rather see him go and this team be forced into a different build and style that encourages and cultivates far more TEAM responsibility/accountability and TEAM cohesion, than see him stay and the same ol’ crap happen.
Of course, if JJ stays, that’s still going to be on the new coach and on Rick Sund. The new coach will have to avoid leaning on him for every dang thing, making guys play their parts (pg should control the offensive flow, and so on…). Meanwhile Sund has to make sure the pieces we need are in place so that this can be done.
Keep up the same way of doing things , and nothing will change about where this team can go, and what it can do. I’m all done worrying about JJ. Either he’ll stay or he won’t, I’m sure the team will offer him plenty of monetary motivation to stick around. I’m more concerned about a better team build, team philosophy, and team chemistry than I am anything else.

There’s not to much I can add to that logic. None of us wants to re-build & neither does JJ. He has made that clear with his words rarely spoken. Even, if he does team with LBJ or Wade? The trade alone will decimate the team – which is at best a start up team. At, the G4 – Summit, all 4 will come to the same conclusion. Its apparent otherwise they would all still be playing next week. Where as next week they’ll be somewhere sucking sour grapes.
Trying to figure out why they’re all wearing fishing gear. Doc rivers said it best – it took all 12 players to dismanÞle the Magic. All 12!!!!!!! These guys will be looking at only 4 max!

Why does everyone want to trade Marvin? If a new coach can coach up Teague and Josh why can’t a new coach, coach up Marvin? Remember Marvin really didn’t have any plays run for him. Marvin was the fourth or fifth option. Basically just a hustle player in an offense with really no rhyme or reason. At times Marvin during the season showed flashes of ability and put up good numbers even winning several games with double-double numbers. I would not trade anyone except Bibby, Collins, Mo Evans, or Zsa Zsa until a new coach was in place. I would also draft Jerome Jordan, Dexter Pittman or the kid from Belarus. Hawks need bigs in the worst way!!!

And as far as the Hawks assistant GM Pendergraft – How about George Hill drafted #26 by San Antonio Spurs in 1st round in 2008? Basically replaced T. Parker this season when Parker was hurt putting up great numbers on the offensive and defensive end of the floor. Again #26 in the 1st round! Do your job Pender Poop!

Not drinking, I think the thing that we’re all concerned with about Marvin is that Marvin is paid higher than about 65% of the starting SF in the league. And we KNOW he’s not producing more than 65% of the starting SF in the league.

The guy is only known for having a good jumpshot, yet didn’t make many this year and this 3 pt shot he worked on 2 yrs ago was nonexistent this year. He is not that good at any facet of the game, is very frail/weak and cannot absorb contact and finish a play. He is always on the ground and isn’t that good of a defender. Also, he does nothing in the summer to improve these things, instead opting to work out with Superstar Sean May and pursue his lucrative African American Studies Degree

This team relies on JJ too much. And that will not work in the playoffs. The new coach needs to promote more ball movement, and less ISOs. He must hold everyone accountable, and he must define each player’s role.
On nbafanhouse.com, Howard is calling for changes to the Magic roster. And I dont blame him. Carter is an expiring contract for $16 mil, but Rashard has 3 years and $65 mil left on his deal. He is waaaay overpaid.
Maybe Hawks can swing a trade for Brandon Bass, or maybe we can extend an offer to Redick, and see if Orlando matches. Would we be interested in Jason Williams for a third PG?

Even if the Hawks keep Joe, in three years their offense is going to have to be centered around Smoove, Horford, and the point guard (whether that’s Teague or someone brought in by trade or through the draft).

I’m still pissed-off about this draft statement:
paraphrase – “ain’t no players @ 24.”
Quit worryin’ about a shooter that can’t defend,
or a this that can’t do that, or a Big that ain’t
big enough. We’re playin’ a 6-8.5 guy @ center
and he’s whinin’ over some legit 6-10, 6-11 guys;
with 7-5 & 7-6 w-spans. Crap – alot of guys
measured bigger than they thought:
* Larry Sanders
* Paul George
true [5's]
* Jerome Jordan
* Sol. Alabi
* Dex Pittman
Which brings me to my main point !
Whatever happened to drafting a;
“Basketball Player” !
-Greivis Vasquez- comes to mind.
No true position – all he does is ‘Compete’ !
I bet – DP’s right – we end up sellin’ our pick.

Ok tell me what all of you think about this… We trade Josh Smith and Marvin Williams to a team like Golden State for the 6th pick.. With that 6th pick we take Demarcus Cousins from Kentucky. Al Horford can go to PF and Cousins will be our C.. After all that with the 24th pick we take Eric Bledsoe if he is available. All of you know Bledsoe was in the same situation at Kentucky as Russell Westbrook was at UCLA with Darren Collison.. Bledsoe reminds me of Westbrook and can come in and play quickly. I don’t think Jeff Teague will ever be a good starting point guard but coming off the bench he can be real good for us… After all that we can take either Stanley Robinson from UCONN or Damion James from Texas.. They both are polished from staying in school all 4 years and they both are already better than Marvin Williams if you ask me.. If Joe Johnson comes back that would be huge for us and imagine how good we can be if Avery Johnson becomes our coach..
Our team would look like this…
Starters.. C-Demarcus Cousins
PF-Al Horford
SF-Damion James or Stanley Robinson
SG-Joe Johnson
PG-Mike Bibby until Eric Bledsoe is ready
Bench…
Jamal Crawford
Moe Evans
Zaza Pachulia
Jeff Teague
Joe Smith.. In my opinion this looks very realistic for the Hawks and I think on paper we get better with these changes.. Marvin and Josh lack heart to me.. And for all of you who know basketball you know that can’t be taught.. Let me know what you all think

I agree with you concerning the Hawks front office statements about the draft. This draft has legitimate (5’s) with players like Jeff Foote, Jerome Jordan, Solomon Alabi, Dexter Pittman and Art Parakhouski. This draft also has shooters such as Andy Rautins, Mikhail Torrance, Willie Warren and Luke Babbitt, as well as players like Greivis Vasquez, Sherron Collins, Elliot Williams and Keith “Tiny” Gallon (Al Jefferson cousin) would all improve the Hawks bench with the right coaching staff.

Good morning Atlanta fans and Atlanta Hawks Organization, I was sad reading your blog from San Antonio this morning. I felt so sad that after all these years you guys still do not have a championship. Worse still I could not be believe my eyes when your assistant GM stated that he was not sure the Hawks could draft an NBA-ready prospect at #24. What a daft! Excuse my language. Anyway, I am just letting your city know that I would be giving a class called “how to draft an NBA-ready prospect at any round.” The class is free, but you must bring an identification card. Also bring your lunch because it is a 9 hour class. The class will start at 9:00 a:m on June 4th, 2010, and it is just for one day. After taking my class, your AGM will be convinced that there is little difference between #1 and #32 picks. Stats do not lie. You can check my record online. Furthermore, news got to me that Atlanta wanted Tony Parker. Unfortunately, he had made it clear that Atlanta was not among his choices. If there is anything that you guys want me to do for your city, please do not hesitate to email me at gpopo@sanantoniospurs.org. Thank you for reading my script.

I want to ask a none basketball question. My question is directed to anyone who either knows about PROSTATE CANCER, or has personal experience with it, because I’ve just been diagnosed with it. I just need to know what I can expect as far as side effects from radiation treatment. I know I’m going to beat this, but I’d just like to know what I’ll be up against, either from someone who’s experienced it or someone who knows someone first hand that’s experienced it.

Hey Ken S,
I know you probably have googled: “prostate cancer treatment” but, just in case you missed this link, I thought it gave sound advice:
http://www.cancer.org/…/CRI_2_4_4X_Approach_to_Treatment_Options_36.asp
Especially this excerpt from that article:
“You might find that speaking with others who have faced or are currently facing the same issues is useful. The American Cancer Society’s program, Man to Man, and similar programs sponsored by other organizations provide a forum for you to meet and discuss these and other cancer-related issues. For more information about our programs, call us toll-free at 1-800- 227-2345 or visit our Web site at cancer.org.”
I don’t know your age or general health issues, but just keep reading as much information as you can get your hands on, and definitely get into that forum discussion with several men who can share from your specific set of circumstances. Early detection is always the key, and for those of you guys on here who are approaching age s 40 to 50 years of age if African American/Asian or 45 – 50 if in overall good general health, please don’t hesitate to have your prostate checked on a regular basis according to your physician. A simple blood test can alert you if there are elevated PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) levels. Which indicates possible prostate cancer.
Sound like to me you are on your way to recovery, regardless of which procedure you end up choosing. Medicine has come a long way – baby! Most important of all keep your faith in Jehovah God. He performs miracles in the darkest of hours! Amen Brother!

As for Bigs -I like Dexter Pittman or Alabi if he’s there.
Kelvin Davis I like your trade but there is no gaurantee trhat Cousins will be there at 6 but if we were gauranteed he’d be there i would try this
Josh/Marvin/Bibby/#24 pick for Rudolph/Watson/#6
Im not sold on Teague he really has no jumper and that a major flaw in the NBA unless you have Rondo type talen to change games in other ways.
Avery johnson is a team killer and hes not good with players,the team would tune him out after a few weeks and with his annoying azz voice -i couldnt blame them.
