Kevin Seraphin is one of the project centers who might be available to the Hawks in the draft.
Hawks assistant GM Dave Pendergraft watched dozens of college prospects throughout the season. When it ended, he was “excited” about the possibilities for the team’s No. 24 overall draft pick, figuring the Hawks would have several good prospects to choose from during the June 24 draft.
But then Pendergraft scrutinized Synergy Sports video and data, evaluated prospects’ workouts and interviews and took note of their physical measurements.
“Now, as things start to dwindle down, I’m really not so sure about that,” Pendergraft said today.
Pendergraft was fresh back from pre-draft workouts for 42 less-heralded prospects in Minneapolis this week. Of those players, Pendergraft said “a handful” were first-round material. With the Hawks picking near the bottom of the first round, those workouts plus the 23 prospects they plan to bring in between now and the draft are more important than the Chicago camp for top prospects (which have become less useful, anyway, with most players opting not to work out).
Pendergraft ranks the top five prospects, in order, as Kentucky’s John Wall, Ohio State’s Evan Turner, Kentucky’s DeMarcus Cousins, Georgia Tech’s Derrick Favors and Syracuse’s Wesley Johnson. He said one or two of those players will face a steep learning curve but that all should be good players by the end of the season.
After those five, he said the draft becomes “very, very hard to predict” but he thinks teams can find rotation players as low as No. 20 in the order, depending on their needs. “If that player is a worker, by the All-Star break they will be giving you some minutes,” he said.
The talent drops off after those top 15 or 20. So unless the Hawks move up in the order, Pendergraft doesn’t expect this draft to be deep enough for the Hawks to find a player who’s ready to contribute now.
“I think we will get a piece,” he said. “I don’t think we will necessarily get a rotational piece. We can get a player who after some seasoning can stay in the NBA for a while, that can make a career out of it. If we can keep our roster intact I don’t see a lot of playing time. It will be a situation where we take advantage of our D-League affiliate.”
The Hawks have rarely used the D-League: Othello Hunter and Thomas Gardner played a couple games there in 2008-09 but that’s the only time in four years the Hawks sent their young players down to get burn.
Because of the low expectations for the 24th pick, Pendergraft said Joe Johnson’s future has no bearing on the Hawks’ draft preparations. They aren’t going to draft a wing player who can come in and play, anyway, so if Johnson leaves they’ll need to find a veteran to fill that role.
The Hawks were in the market for a shooter at the trade deadline and later had interest in signing free agent center Zydrunas Ilgauskas. Now they’d like to find a shooter or big man in the draft.
Word out of Chicago and Minneapolis was that the center group’s measurements were disappointing as a whole. “I think that happens every year,” Pendergraft said. “They never measure as tall as you want them to measure.”
At least one mock draft predicts the Hawks will select center Kevin Seraphin, who measured 6-9 without shoes and has a 7-3 wingspan.
“Unfortunately, the big bodies that fall to us will be more in the project range,” Pendergraft said. “You have to look at NBA free agents [at center] and say they probably are a better way to go. But if we are going to pick a skill, a need, we need one more shooter.”
Is this draft deep with shooters?
“No,” Pendergraft said. “That’s the [freakin'] problem. There are bunch of guards but not a lot of shooters. There are some good players but they can’t make shots. And the better shooters can’t play a lick of defense.”
The next important evaluation period for the Hawks is another pre-draft camp in New Jersey June 9-11. The Hawks will start bringing in prospects for workouts on Jan. 13 and continue to do so up until June 22.
“Coming into this thing I thought there would be maybe six or seven guys there at [No. 24],” Pendergraft said. “Now that’s shrunk a little bit to maybe three or four. But you never know. The good thing is it’s not going to make or break us because we’ve got good players coming back.”

Rick Sund Would be stupid to pass on Sherron Collins at this point. Bibby is useless and unless you want to overpay for Raymond Felton or Chris Duhon, theres nothing decent in free agency. Peremeter D was one of the Biggest problems.
Sherron+Teague=PG spot solidified for years to come.
Draft a Big in the 2nd Rd. Dexter Pittman will be there and so will this guy:

Great point re: drafting international players and Never seeing nor hearing their names ever mentioned again. Either trade that pick in RD1 and get a veteran BIG or PG to come off the bench! Where do these go? Into purgatory?
That’s a GM error, but the coach is always assinated-sp for it.
Re: coaching someone into being a BEAST? Nah man. BEASTS are born NOT made! That’s a feature of having heart! Little Nate is a BEAST at 5′6″….. I.e. Spud – Web, Steve Nash, A.I., et.al.

I will be happy to have him at #24 6′9″ without shoes, 6′11″ with shoes. 7′3″ wingspan, 258lbs, can finish with either hand, 20 years and very athletic…WE DON’T HAVE PLAYER ON OUR ROSTER WITH THOSE NUMBERS.

Taller, bigger, longer and more athletic than Horford…measurements and athleticism maybe equal to Derrick Favors(http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Derrick-Favors-1335/)..I Will Take Him.

Curiously, in a supposed anti-incumbent year, most of the departing are not retiring but seeking higher office. We may recycle more than we replace. The bad news is that a frustrating 114 seats still have but one contestant. Two of them aren’t even incumbents, meaning they will affect state policy without being vetted by voters. And I have to think that we’d be better off if many had run instead for the Legislature — and cut down on the number running unopposed. Georgia’s problems are numerous. They aren’t going away. There’s too much stale thinking at the Capitol, on both sides of the aisle. New voices would be welcome.

oh so that is the problem the hawks havent been able to drafty any hard workers in the past six years.
cop out if i ever heard one, it isnt the ability to figure out who has talent, work ethic and coaches to instill desire and teach but it is all about getting good workers …… right.
some other teams figure it out regularly.
guess we can keep guessing on the benefits of whether we get a worker or not. expect another poor draft is my guess. pressure on sund to find some vets in the grass then.
now what was d wade saying about coaches just the other day?
where is accountability in this organization from the top to the bottom? gearon, it is about fans coming out to see us not us convincing them to come. there wouldnt be a circus today with that attitude now would there be? this way to the egress folks, follow me.

We need to take a flyer on a Center. Maybe he will turn into something decent, so we can get rid of soft ZaZa. Sounds like their aren’t a lot of shooters. We don’t need to trade the pick for $$. How cheap can we be?!? How are you ever going to contend for a title that way? You need a little luck in the draft (Tony Parker, Manu) Drafting Euro’s and keeping them across the pond has not produced jack for us so far.

The management might be different, but the attitude seems the same…Why is it that some teams continue to get “lucky” with late picks or undrafted players like Tony Parker, Wes Matthews Jr. and Carlos Boozer, while the Hawks seem to have no idea what they are doing with these picks…Even when we pick a future like David Andersen, we then decide we don’t want anything to do with him when he comes to the NBA…I think the almost flippant attitude that these are all “projects” (his words) or throw away picks is conducive to failure when it comes to filling your roster….We just seem to have a firm idea of what we want to do and Woody, while he had some good accomplishments, was from the Larry Brown school when it came to developing young players….We have 2 options in Europe, Sergiy Gladyr and Josh Childress…I would almost rather go in a different direction than be married to JJ for the next 6-7 years…I don’t he will perform at his current level for more than a couple more years and then we are stuck with a Jermaine O’Neal, Tracy McGrady situation for a couple of years

Guys are out there. But the GM must fin him, the coach must coach him up, and the player must work and practice really hard. So it takes 3 people. Its not all on the player.

Cdog,
What exactly did Billy Knight do to engender that loyalty…Try to fire Woody. Could have done a lot better than Dickau and Andersen is 02…Diaw and Travis Hansen (?) in 03…2004 was his high point with Josh Smith at 18, but Childress over Deng and Iguadala and Donta Smith and Royal Ivey over Chris Duhon and Trevor Ariza…And considering we already had Diaw and Childress, why not take Jameer Nelson instead of Josh….Would have made the pick of Marvin in 2005 at least somewhat understandable….Getting juked and hosed by the Suns on the most disorganized sign and trade ever….The fact IS THAT WHERE WE DRAFTED FOR 4 YEARS, THE WEAKNESS OF OTHER TEAMS AROUND US AND THE LUCK WE HAD IN GETTING THE THIRD PICK TO GET HORFORD INSTEAD OF GIVING IT TO PHOENIX HAD AS MUCH TO DO WITH OUR SLOW IMPROVEMENT AS ANY GREATNESS OF BK AND WOODY…Now, maybe if Woody really did push hard for a forward instead of CP or Deron Williams, then BK should have took a dose of reality and known that we needed an upper level point guard to maximize our wings…Any 10th grader could have seen that…I don’t know that Sund is a great GM or not, but the last two guys got 6 years and 4 shots at the lottery to build something special…Don’t think Sund will get the same long leash…And don’t even get me started on Mr. Candace Parker…

Clearly this assistant GM is doing the presell on the Hawks dumping the first round pick for cash. The Hawks have a roster that is so strong 1-12 that a #24 pick can’t possibly crack it, even if the 9-12 guys were planted on the bench throughout the playoffs. Never mind that the Spurs pick up somebody who can play every year picking 25-30.
This past season represented the peak for the Hawks. They have a disfunctional ownership and Al Horford, a nice player but not a superstar, is the only real fundamentally sound building block on the roster. There have only been a couple of teams that have won an NBA championship in the last 30+ years without a true superstar (’79 Supersonics, ‘04 Pistons). The Hawks don’t have one, draft too low to get one that way and no free agent superstar is going to even consider the Hawks under the present ownership group.

Hawks73 – They measure in bare feet to get a true read on their hgt.
Players wear lifts @ the combine to be measured;
Cole Aldrich – grew 2.5 inches with shoes.
Hassan Whiteside – wore flip flops (shoes) only added an inch.
Jack Givens – drafted by Hawks in the 70’s, listed @ 6-4 / really only 6-1.
Michael Finley – listed 6-7, / supposedly measured 6-3+ when drafted.
Romain Sato – [Xavier] drafted by S A Spurs listed @ 6-6 college, measured 6-2.

FanHouse has learned that the Atlanta Hawks will interview ESPN/ABC analyst Mark Jackson for their head coaching job on Saturday in Atlanta, according to a league source.
Jackson — who concluded his Eastern Conference finals television work with Boston’s series-clinching Game 6 win over Orlando Friday — is expected to be the last candidate for the position, according to another source with knowledge of the Hawks’ process. Former Minnesota coach Dwane Casey and former Dallas coach and ESPN analyst Avery Johnson have been part of two Hawks interviews.

Europicks are like no money down, lay aways. You don’t have to pay them now if they stay away and develop their games. You can decide that you don’t want the player and just leave him there or deal his rights later (remember David Andersen?)
If you play a Euro friendly style (Spurs, Raptors, Houston) you can get more out of a foreign player sooner.
Also measurement w/o shoes gives a better sense of wingspan relative to height. NBA likes the long armed fellas. It’s almost like 40 times for the NFL. It doesn’t mean you can play, but you cannot teach height & length.
…and if we lose Joe, Hedo might be the best player available to get. Would have to be a trade.

Here is a question. If the Hawks were able to trade Marvin and Zaza to Toronto for Hedo. And the Hawks were able to sign Brewer. Could the Hawks then run a line up similar to the Bulls, with the triangle offense being the main set. Could they start two big guards, and have a point forward at SF? And then bring Teague along at 23-24 minutes a game off of the bench until he was productive enough to take the starting G spot from Brewer?

There can’t be many takers for him given his contract. We already have Marvin for FOUR more years (with a PLAYER’S option on the 5th), so why not offer Marvin + Mo (if he doesn’t opt out) for Hedo? Get a wing who can CREATE offense, and he’d love being with Z

The Hawks management are a bunch of peasant minded, blinded idiots. If they can’t see that there will be just as more talent at the bottom of 1st round a beginning of second as at top they deserve to be stuck with one decent player, Jamal Crawford coming off the bench.
Damion James: A legit sized SF coming off bench, seriously after 4 years of college this guy does not need a stupid D-league, all he needs is to get used to system and teammates. The guy was a candidate for Player of the Year early in the season.
Ganai Lawal: I don’t like him, but he could definitely be better than any big man we have coming off the bench because that’s not hard to do when all you have is Joe Smith, Jason Collins, Morris, and Zaza.
Craig Brackins: We brought Joe Smith in for leadership and pick and pop jumpshots. Brackins has the jumpshot part going for him and he is a legit PF size, the guy would have been a lottery pick last year and you think he needs to go to the D-league, no, all he needs is to get used to playing with better teammates and there system.
Willie Warren: The guy can shoot, bottom line, he would have been a lottery pick if he had left last year. You telling me there is no value here or he needs the D-league, how do we know he will not be better than Teague from day 1? Teague never went to the D-league.
Eric Bledsoe: The guy is all over the boards, could go close to the lottery could drop to us or below. Seriously athlete who has a good mid-range and deep shot with long wingspan. He could be better than Teague from day 1.
Tiny Gallon, Trevor Booker, Luke Harangody from those 3 will come this year Dejuan Blair which one I don’t know, maybe all 3, did Blair go to the D-league even though he played with a nucleus that has won championships? No.
Jarvis Varnado: Who do we have that comes off the bench and affects the game on defense consistently? Noone because Mario only plays every once and a while because he is so limited other than pressuring the ball. Varnado can also rebound at a decent rate, I’m sure just as well or better than Joe Smith, Randolph, and Collins.
Wildcard: Someone slipping like some guys always do, like Hassan Whiteside.
Finally, there are plenty of guys that will be around at 24 that can make an immediate impact. 7 out of 10 guys taking in the 20’s last year made an impact for there team. Why are we the only franchise that consistently sell ourselves short? Why are we looking for a D-leaguer while others are getting impact guys?

Interesting idea. I do think that as far as the Raptors being willing to do this, it is a realistic possibility — Turkoglu doesn’t like being there and his trade value couldn’t possibly be any lower. Having Turkoglu around would help Joe Johnson immensely because floor spacing would be a lot better with him around than with Marvin, and it would take a lot of the ball-handling burden away from Joe.
Defensively it would probably be a step back somewhat, and I don’t think it’s worth making that move for Turkoglu’s contract if Joe leaves. If Joe goes somewhere else, the Hawks’ focus should be to try to move the Marvin/Bibby/Zaza trio for expiring contracts, build the team around Teague/Smoove/Horford, clear cap space, and make a run at Carmelo Anthony or another high-quality free agent next offseason. But if Joe stays, investing $10 million a year in Turkoglu is definitely an improvement over investing $12 million a year in Marvin and Zaza.

I do think that regardless of who else the Hawks acquire at any other position next season, Teague should start at point guard. The only way Teague shouldn’t start next year is if a) the Hawks trade someone like Darren Collison, or b) the Hawks draft a point guard at #24 who completely outperforms Teague in training camp and preseason.

truthspitter,
Co-sign. There are guys available who can provide 10-15 minutes per game off the bench. Teague was capable of giving us 10-15 mpg last year, and he was the seventh PG taken.
Some of the guys I think could earn PT as rookies are:
1) Damion James – one of the leading rebounders in the big 10 although he played SF.
2) Booker – An undersized PF, but so are guys like Paul Milsap and Carl Landry (who were second round picks, if I’m not mistaken). Hawks need a backup PF.
3) Brackins could be an option at the backup PF spot too.
4) If we lose JJ and Mo Evans, Vasquez could be an option at backup SG.
Nobody expects all stars to be taken at #24, but there has to be guys who can give us a consistent 10-15 mpg. Other teams find them, so why can’t we?

Najeh, its funny, I think even if JJ stays the Hawks could position themselves to make a run for Carmelo. Remember Bibby and Crawford comes off the books next season. And if there’s anyway that they can trade Marvin that is even better for them. In my plan with the Hedo trade, it included acquiring Ronnie Brewer as a free agent. And Brewer is a better defender than Marvin, so the defense wouldn’t suffer too terribly. Also with Hedo’s offensive ability, he’ll be able to work the wing even more than Marvin. Sometimes the best defense is a great offense. And with Hedo and JJ on the wings, what could other teams do to counter that? Especially if Teague is penetrating the lane, and able to kick out.

1. Marvin + Mo + 2nd rounder for Hedo
2) Resign Joe
3) Hire Avery, Sam Mitchell, or Mark Jackson. We need a PG Coach to help Teague out, but Mitchell is a solid coach in general
4) Bring Bibby off bench
5) Sign the same bigs we had last year
You now have Hedo instead of deadweight Marvin, a better starting PG, and a MUCH better head coach. I don’t see Orlando or Cleveland or Boston being better next year…
