Joe Johnson didn’t exactly take it back today. He was mad that fans booed the Hawks throughout their Game 3 loss to Orlando and afterward told reporters he “could care less if they showed up or not.”
Asked if he had any more thoughts on the topic after sleeping on it, J.J. said:
“It was tough. I don’t think we’ve heard the boos like that in the five years since I’ve been here. When I first got here, man, there were probably like 100 people out there in those seats. I won’t say everybody is a diehard, but they’ve shown us a lot of support over the years. In the heat of the battle you tend to say a lot of things. But it was tough, man. I was a little [ticked] off but I am over now.”
His comments have led to speculation that he sounds like a guy who doesn’t like it in Atlanta anymore and can’t wait to leave via free agency this summer. But Johnson said that’s taking it too far.
“Don’t read in between all of that,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed my years here. They’ve been great. We’ll see what happens Monday.”
That’s not a farewell speech, is it?
“No, not at all,” he said.
Some context on J.J.’s postgame comments. Normally he takes a while to get dressed before he faces reporters. But after Game 3 he was just out of the shower and immediately beckoned media when he made it to his stall. The question that led to the inflammatory quote was whether fans booing affected him or the team.
So does he care if fans show up for Game 4 tomorrow?
“If they come out and show us support, it would be great,” he said.
During a separate interview, Woody also touched on the fans and their expectations. The question was regarding Al Horford’s contention that the Hawks are a loose, fun-loving group that sometimes doesn’t know when it’s time to get serious (an observation I’ve made as well).
Woody agreed with that and then talked about how in the past he’s been viewed as a coach who is too demanding, how Hawks players don’t make negative headlines off the court, and then about the team’s chemistry:
“We do have a young group of good guys who do like each other. But when you face adversity, sometimes guys stray off and you start to point fingers. That ain’t always good in terms of your team. Sometimes you find out a lot about people when you do lose. We haven’t lost very many games this year, especially in this building. And people expect you to win. That’s a good thing. I think coming into the season, I made that very clear that expectations are going to be higher this year, and they should be. You should want it that way. People are going to expect much more than they’ve ever expected even though we’v4e never been an elite team, we are trying to get to that level. People sometimes expect too much, especially here in this arena where we’ve been pretty successful the last couple years. We’ve kind of spoiled our fans a little bit. Maybe that’s why they turned last night in terms of the boos and things of that nature because it was a lackluster game on our part.”

2009 Draft Review
Hawks take Jeff Teague who has done absolutely nothing but looked lost.
Coulda shoulda
Darren Collison making Chris Paul expendable.
Rodrique Beaubouis future star in Dallas.
BJ Mullens true center.
Sam Young solid 1st yr. contributor in Memphis.
Marcus Thornton another very productive 1st yr. in NO.
Dejuan Blair all he does is rebound and defend.
Again, why is Sund not on the HOOK?

I’m sorry, but Joe Johnson should have kept his mouth shut. Where is his outrage and passion when his teammates are getting pantsed by 40 in game one by Orlando or where is his disgust with himself for sucking so bad whenever the spot light is on him? I mean, it shows a lot about him that as soon as he gets booed he turns on the fans but offers no explanation or apology for crapping the bed in the playoffs.
The Hawks can get embarrassed without Joe Johnson, so why give him a max contract to get embarrassed WITH him?
It’s time for changes to be made. If you have a max contract to offer, why not test Lebron James’s temperature to see if a supporting cast of Al Horford, Josh Smith and Jamal Crawford and living in the center of the hip hop world would whet his chops and interest him. Or see if Dwayne Wade wants a fresh start away from Miami.

Based on Josh’s salary, age, and his (potential) impact on offense and defense, you will be hard pressed to find another player that comes close to that. Also, I would like to see if another coach can help Josh change some of his bad habits.
So I would not trade Josh as yet. Plus his value probably took a hit from his performance in the last few games.
Give us a PG and a HC, and then we can see what kind of impact they have on the team.

Tyger , please. Take that weak ish somewhere else.
Sund did not say he would “bring Teague along slowly.”
Sund did not say “I think he plays pretty good for a guy who doesn’t get much playing time. It’s tough on rookies when they don’t get the playing time. No need to throw him to the wolves.”
Sund did not decree that Teague be played 10 mpg, and most of that with the other reserves and guys who almost never get off the bench.
Many of those other members of the 2009 draft class got better playing time, with the starting crew, and at significant points of games.
Here’s where you also tripped up: Which NBA team did BJ Mullens play for this past year, and how many minutes did he log? Exactly….
And Darren Collison is making CP3 expendable? In which universe? If CP3 is truly expendable, it’s HIS KNEES that make it so, not a decent but not superstar level rookie pg.

Najeh ,
In situations like this, losing your best player always hurts. But I’d take that New Orleans scenario. Collison is a good young pg who can hold his own on both ends of the court. I don’t want Peja, but a bad contract has to happen somewhere along the line, so be it….
I could go for a S&T with Chicago as well, if it netted us Noah and Hinrich. Hinrich’s contract is not a good one by rote, but he’s a good enough player where I’d accept it.

It is time for some changes. Its time to build around the “true” talent of this team. Josh and Al. And its time for Woody to go. This team isnt far from being great. An elite, if you will. We need to let Joe go and take his money to get a “real” center. No knock against Al, but he needs to move back to his natural position of PF. We need to get Jamal signed long term and put him into the starting line-up. And the Marvin project is over! Trade him and get what you can. Go out and find a true point guard and can drive and dish. I wouldnt mind seeing Jamal playing point. Bring in a good jump shooter that can knock down the outside shot. Im so over the Iso-Joe!!! Get a center. Jamal at point, Al at PF, Smoove at SF (that matchup would be hard for any team in the league to defend). Bring in a solid PG/SG backup(s) and this team can clear the hurdles like Orlando and Cleveland. And last but not least…Have someone teach this team how to defend the pick and roll.

Alright guys, lets breakup this pity-party up for awhile. It time for a little comic relief.
Here is a thought: What if Van Gundy really got creative and intentionally save Woody’s job by losing the next 2 playoff games. That way, Woody can make a case to his boss which would setup him to resign for a multi-year contract. With CJ (“Choke” Johnson) happy of Woody resigning, he then re-ups for another 5 years. That would setup 5 more years of “Beat-Downs” by Orlando Magic against the Hawks.
Van Gundy would be a genius!!!

Joey: Your logic if flawed. Yes, lower seeded teams should lose to higher seeded teams. We can grasp that. We can also grasp how poorly the Hawks are playing, how much they are losing by each game, how they are outcoached each game, how little adjustments are being made and how poorly they are prepared.

I dont know why people keep saying, “the hawks are not far from being an elite team”. Folks the Hawks are ALREADY AN ELITE TEAM. In case you forgot, the Hawks finished third in the conference AHEAD OF THE BOSTON CELTICS. The Hawks beat the Lakers, Cavs and Magic in their last appearances against those teams. Thats the stuff legends are made of. The Hawks finished 4-0 against the mighty Celtics. The Hawks this year have proved themselves to be elite over and over again. There were things that were symptomatic of the Hawks which are causing their downfall now: #1) blown leads late in ballgames #2) boring, stagnant offense that goes cold and stales for minutes upon end and #3) focus lapses where they start ballgames in big holes or not finishing out quarters and games strong. These symptomatic problems are what has caused the Hawks to look so bad. As far as recordwise goes, the Hawks finished only 6 games behind the magic in the standings. Its not like the magic were 30 games better than the Hawks although the Hawks are playing like they are. LETS GET SOMETHING CLEAR. THE ORLANDO MAGIC WILL NOT WIN THE NBA TITLE THIS YEAR. Cleveland, Boston, Lakers and Phoenix look better than Orlando and Orlando is the 5th best team remainding. Second of all, THE HAWKS WILL COME BACK TO WIN THE SERIES WITH THE MAGIC. I know that sounds crazy but the Hawks will play for pride and become the FIRST TEAM IN NBA HISTORY TO OVERCOME A 3-0 HOLE AND CLIMB OUT OF IT TO WIN THE SERIES 4-3. Secondarily the Hawks will win the NBA championship this June. After that happens, Mike Woodsen will get a 10-year extension on his contract. Hawks in seven. Stay tuned.

It is no doubt that Miami will retool which is exactly why we should not just “tweak” I predict that Orlando will lose some parts as well (mainly M Barnes perhaps) so no one will really stand still. All kidding aside, as JJ claim to have been frustrated saying thing he may not mean (as coached by his agent no-doubt), so can the fans claim a level of frustration as well. Some of us may have also said things out of frustration. I don’t know if redemption is even possible (at this point) but in this next game, if JJ doesn’t play for the Hawks fans, at least he should play for pride .For the last time, he should prove to himself what he is made out of in playoff competition.

Rick Sund:
If you read the blogs..this would be a good trade for the Hawks for years to come.
If the Hawks were to trade Joe, here’s an example of a realistic (in my opinion) trade possibility they might encounter that would have benefits for both sides:
Hawks trade: Joe Johnson (signed to a new max or near-max deal), Jeff Teague
Hornets trade: Darren Collison, Peja Stojakovic (contract expires next year), their lottery pick this year, and their first round pick in 2011
Hawks get a young, rising star point guard who can start immediately and push the tempo with the athletic front court, cap flexibility going forward so that they can re-sign Horford and be a player in next summer’s free agent market, and a sudden bounty of first-round picks that they can either use to trade up to aim for a guy like Evan Turner or Wesley Johnson, increase the depth on the roster as a whole, or trade for veteran role players who can fill needs immediately.
Hornets get a guy who, unlike Collison, can start with CP3 in their backcourt, take a lot of pressure off of CP3 to carry the team single-handedly, and get a much-needed infusion of talent on a team seriously lacking it outside the point guard position.
I’ll leave it to y’all to decide how realistic this is or how beneficial it may be to the Hawks (or the Hornets for that matter). I’m not pretending like this won’t be a step back next year — I think any scenario in which Joe leaves will end up being a step back, unless they send the world’s biggest blunt to Pat Riley and get him high enough to trade Dwyane Wade. I’m not even saying getting rid of Joe is the right idea, but if the Hawks look to part ways with Joe, I think they could do a lot worse than this.

The Hawks had a great chance to win the title this year had they made the right off-season moves at the end of last year and brought in HEIDO TURKELU and RAFER ALSTEN. As I said before, those two guys would have solved ALL of the Hawks problems but Rick Sund was either too ignorant or not knowledgeable enough to know that those two guys helped a team make the finals (Magic) and would have done the exact same thing for the Hawks. Its too bad because those two players are signed now with their respective teams (Bobcats) and (Raptors) and cant get out of their deals now. We could have gotten both of them for just pennies on the dollar. Oh well, its too late now. Lets make sure we do get rid of Joe Johnson, Marvin Williams, Mike Bibby, Josh Smith and Mike Woodsen. One passing thought about JJ:
JJ is a player that seems to be too pre-occupied with his contract situation perhaps could explain why his game is so effected by what the fans are doing and what we think of him. If he would play the game he loves as if he was playing for free (as back in the day on the playgrounds) he might look like the JJ of old (which is better the current JJ). Perhaps all the money JJ as earned over the years and the prospect of future earnings might have “spoiled” his game. Even his attitude has changed since he been here. He has gone from been the mild mannered soft-spoken leading by example player, to being a rude and arrogate millionaire who seem to really don’t give a dam one way or another.

If I were JJ tonight, I’d go in front of the firing squad tonight, and address the fans at the game before tip-off. He WILL BE BOOED as soon as he grabs the mic by some people, but he needs to endure that.
Give him a microphone . . stand him at center court . . have him apologize to the fans for his comments . . let him make like a halfway farewell speech, thanking the fans and the organization and the coaches . . and then say that this team will do everything they can to win the game tonight.
And see if that will calm things down to a certain extent. If I were a PR person for the Hawks, that’s what I would try to convince JJ to do.

Then click the link to that story, and look who is mean muggin even harder in the first pic.
Pretty much sums him up at this point.
-Keep Smoove, Al, and Crawford
-Find new coach
-S/T: JJ for Gay (and if S/T rules allow, Conley as well)
-Sign Randy Foye to offer sheet OR bring Chills back from Greece
-Draft Alabi from FSU
-Move Bibby and Marvin to bench
-Crawford has to stay on the bench, because becoming the first one of the bench means his sole purpose is to score, not facilitate the ball. If he starts at PG, he will be relied on to lead the offense. That’s not his game…….he needs to be given the green light to shoot. He is most valuable just as Ginobili is…….as a sixith man.
PG: Conley (or Teague if S/T doesn’t go through with him)/Bibby
SG: Foye (or Chills)/Crawford
SF: Gay/Marvin
PF: Smoove/Smith (or Alabi)
C: Horford/Zaza

It wasn’t a single free agent even thinking about coming to Atlanta, despite all of that cap space we had. Even an old Sam Cassell didn’t want to come here, after Minnesota let him go.

JJ proved in this series with the magic that he is not in the same class with Kobe, LaBron, D-Wade and Carmello. Ive been defending Joe for years saying he was the third best player in the league and then when I saw him blow that uncontested layup in saturdays game, after missing shot after shot after shot (most of them were good looks), Ive come to the conclusion that Joe is a second tier player; i.e. in the same league with Mo Williams, Antoine Jameson, Glenn “Big Baby” Davis; players like that. Joe does not deserve a maximum contract because he is not in the category with Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, D-Wade, Carmello Anthony, Dirk Norwinski, Tim Duncan (those are hall of fame talent). Joe is one level down from that. Joe is great but joe is not in a superstar category, although he has sometimes played like one throughout his career. If Joe would just forget about playing for a contract and give it his all, Joe would be the superstar category but I can tell JOE IS PLAYING SCARED RIGHT NOW and that is why he is underperforming and playing at such a low level. JOE IS PLAYING FOR MAX CONTRACT AND HIS PLAY SHOWS HE DOESNT DESERVE ONE.
