The strange thing with listening to the Hawks talk about their problems with stagnating offense is they all seem to agree on the problem:
“Ball movement, like there was in the first three quarters [in Game 2],” J.J. said. “In that fourth quarter, we did a lot of ‘iso’ instead of moving the ball and getting good shots.”
“It all starts with our guards,” Al said. “We have to create movement, we have to have guys moving around. When our guards are doing that, it opens up for us and opens up for them, as well. [The Magic] can’t just sit there and pinpoint.”
“We’ve just got to have more movement and guys have got to make shots,” Woody said. “It’ ain’t scientific or no big secret.”
The Hawks say these things and then they go out and fall back into iso at critical times of the game. When things go bad and the pressure is on, it gets even worse. It’s not always about just missing shots they normally make, it’s about getting better shots, particularly in the playoffs. And the Hawks (and every team) is much better at that when players and the ball are moving.
The Hawks missed some open shots in the first three quarters of Game 2, but didn’t they also get better looks until they faded late?
“Yes but we made shots, though, too,” Woody said. “Joe made a 3, Jamal made a 3. We had some good looks in Game 1 and we didn’t make shots. You can’t have starters and guy coming off bench go 11 for 54 not going to beat nobody in the league.”
According to Hoopdata, in Game 1 the Hawks were 6 of 26 on long jump shots, the bane of basketball number-crunchers, 15 of 25 from closer than 10 feet and 2 of 13 on 3-point shots. In Game 2 they were 7-for-22 on long jumpers, 9 of 20 closer than 10 feet and 6 of 11 on 3-pointers.
If the Hawks stay away from iso, maybe some of those long jump shots become open, spot-up 3-pointers or shots closer to the basket. None of that would solve their considerable problems with defending the Magic, of course. But because of their abilities, talent and temperament the Hawks’ best hope to at least make this a competitive series might be moving the ball and scoring enough points to overcome their defensive deficiencies.
They seem to know iso isn’t the way to do that even if they don’t always show it.

Good mini write-up. Just illustrates what I’ve been talking about. Long jumpers are part of the game. Ball movemet does get you better looks no doubt. But like coach says, it really does come down to guys making shots.
6 – 26 and 7 – 22 on long jumpers isn’t going to cut it. The league average from that range is 40%, so we have to shoot that or higher from that range, to beat the Magic. The onus from that range will be on JJ, Crawford, and Marvin to make those shots. Make 40% of those shots, and at least 35% of the threes, and we should be Ok today.
Nice crowd here. Not full, but a little better than I expected. I saw a little too many half full parking lots, so I guess the crowd will come a little late again.

It don’t work like that.
To beat this team, you have to play a full 48 minutes without significant dropoff. But, when you have lineups such as the one’s we’re seeing now, coupled with poor shooting performances from JJ/Bibby, and no good looks for Horford….

Right now we should be able to call a couple of set plays that would have him run off screens and catch the ball off a curl for a good look but it seems we have no idea what that is .
If we really wanted to run a true isolation spread the court offense we shouldve been going after guys like Frye and other guys who can simply make shots to fill your bench with

WE all know that the Hawks read crowds better than any team in the NBA. They feed off the energy in the arena.
I don’t blame fans for booing, but you know what kind of team’s on the court. Booing them with this much basketball left is a bit disappointing. I know they were lack-a-daiscial, and flat. But, booing them isn’t gonna get them back into the game. It’s only gonna kill their confidence more. They’re the one team that plays to the energy level of the arena.
Again, not tryna get on any fans. You pay your ticket, you hold certain expectations, and if they’re not living up to your expectations and your displeased with what you see, your free to boo.
All I’m saying is, it ain’t doing nothing to get them going.
But, its whatever. I’m just as disappointed and angry, but boo them when it gets out of hand. Don’t contribute to it actually getting out of hand.

The hawks are not out of it the difference in this game is that the magic have made plays when the ball has come to them while the hawks have not even been able to string together 5 good sequences in a row . If we can come out in the second and half and actually string together something we will be able to get right back into it .
Things like Joe throwing that oop when we couldve cut it to 10-or 9 and jamal over passing on the break are things that just kill us we are wasting possessions because instead of recognizing what is working in this game and everyone working together to attack the magic that way everyone wants to try and get in ion the action instead of just allowing the game to come to them.

Venom, you’re right. They are underachievers. I know what Ramon is talking about, a few people did picK teams like Washington, Miami and Toronto to finish ahead of the Hawks in the pre-season…but still several others had them ranked highly too.
All of that is out the window anyway, because when the Hawks jumped out to that good early season start, people were calling the Hawks “Elite” and saying they were a REAL CONTENDER in the east at that point. ESPN even had them ranked #1 in the power rankings at one time.
So…yeah..the media even has gave the Hawks respect…maybe even a little too much. The Hawks just didnt live up to it. So yes…
The Hawks definetly = underachievers.

In my dream (a real one and it surprised me) we did a sign and trade.
It went like this:
Utah gets: Joe Johnson (S&T) and Josh Smith.
Atl gets: Carlos Boozer, Kirilenko, and Ronnie Brewer.
I have NO idea if the salaries match or ANYTHING. Like I said it was a dream.
Before anybody gets started, I as NOT proposing this. But I did dream it.

JJM, no owner would trade Lopez because he’s the best young center at his age in the league.
I wish there was a way to get Chris Paul actually. I would trade Al Horford for Chris Paul if I could (I know many of you are saying Josh, but Hornets wouldn’t take Josh in that deal for Paul). I’d trade Horford/Williams for Paul/Posey in a second. I know they say don’t trade big for small. But you do trade for leaders/superstars if you have the chance. Jody, at the time the Hawks only had one other power forward/center on the team and that was Sheldon Williams (Zo doesn’t count). So Horford didn’t force him to play him. And at the time the Hawks had FOUR point guards on the roster in Lue, Ivey, and AJ. Woody always say great things about the draft prospect.

Ramon,
Actually, the Hawks had ZaZa and when he came back from injury at the beginning of the season, Woody was going to put ZaZa back in the starting lineup and Horford on the bench. That notion didn’t last long because Horford’s play spoke for itself. And you’ve got to be kidding me with Lue, Ivey, and AJ? Again, CP3 would have played because his talent is undeniable. As far as post workout comments, Woody wasn’t too thrilled with Marvin’s, I can tell you that.

You all can talk crazy if you want, but I still would bring Joe back for $15 mil a year. The Magic have $17 million more in payroll. Matter of fact the 2nd lowest to team payroll to the Hawks is the Jazz, and even they are $10 million more than the Hawks. So really you can’t blame Woody or Joe for the losses. They’re playing against an entire different league when it comes to money. The Magic have THREE players who make more than JOE JOHNSON. That’s crazy. And no matter what anyone says R. Lewis is not a better player than Joe, and neither is Howard. If Joe was in Orlando, he’d be averaging over 21 points per game easily. This doesn’t fall on the players nor the coach as much as it does on the ownership to open up the wallets. They can say they want to contend for championships. But if you’re not in the $80 million club, you’re not contending for anything in the NBA.

Jeje, no superstar would come to this team without Smoove or Joe being here. You never saw the Lakers or the Spurs trade the players that were performing for other players. They traded the ones who weren’t performing to get players (i.e. Bibby, Marvin, Zaza, Evans, and others). Joe, Smoove, Al, Teague, and Crawford will be a lot different once a new coach comes in, and they also have more talent around them.

NORTHCYDE-don’t forget to get your black suit cleaned, because you’re invited to Woody’s farewell funeral. Over the last 3gms, we’ve witnessed the total dismantling of his extremely limited halfcourt OFF, which has no built in options, hence the reliance on ISO’s.
Woodson can’t bring himself to try anything new, like play Teague instead of a useless Bibby, or give Marvin some of the shots JJ keeps missing. At least Marvin draws fouls and goes to the FT line when he’s active on OFF. If JJ or Bibby aren’t fouled when shooting jumpshots, they don’t get to the FT line.
There’s no way we will every be competitive against the elite teams, especially in the playoffs with Woodson as our HC and Bibby as our PG.
NIREMETAL-you keep complaining about JCrawford, who’s six man of the yr, and has doubled Bibby’s scoring output while coming off the bench. You said everyone makes an issue of his accomplishment just because he’s so quick. Well, everyone with an actual IQ is also making an issue of Bibby’s lack of accomplishments, and the fact he’s the slowest, least athletic and productive starting PG in the NBA, as well as possibly the absolute worst DEF PG, along with Steve Nash.
I wonder if RSund has already made up a list of candidates he intends to interview, as he looks for Woodson’s replacement? The only way we can do worse than Woodson is to rehire Woodson.

My fustration with coach Woodson is that all year long he has failed to develop his bench guys confidence and relied totally on the starters plus J Crawford. This fatal flaw along with not having an offensive identity has been obvious all year yet management made zero attempts to improve. Its not that they are losing to an inferior team , but the fact that when faced with real well coached team, the Hawks look like JV team against professionals.I think the Bucks would have put up more of a fight simply because of their coaching and BJ at the point. Time for major changes to this team especially in the coaching dept.

And Sautee, you can’t really say his playoff production is higher, because he’s expected to do less. The point was if you put Lewis (who makes 21 mil a year) on the Hawks and JJ on the Magic, Orlando wins a title last year, and the Hawks goes to the first round as a 7 seed. With a coach like Van Gundy and a supporting cast of 3 other all stars, its easy for him to have better stats right now than JJ.

If Woody DOES come back, you won’t have ol’ saltee to banter with. Something to give you hope, I suppose.
I couldn’t stand another season of wasted talents.
I have tried all season to temper my comments on our coach, and to stay positive (unlike SOME multi-named posters who spew negativity). I even gave him a B- rating, and remarked on SOME improvement with his play calls and his rotations. But when a team plays the way this team has in the most important games of the year, I MUST conclude that PART (not all) of the fault is with the coach. Even Woody himself said as much.
Here’s Woody himself: “What is coaching but getting players to become the best they can be, then showing that on a nightly basis?”
Truth-serum, do you seriously think that he has gotten his players to be the best they can be? Seriously?
And how has that “showing it on a nightly basis” thing worked out in the playoffs?

cp,
The rumor before the draft was that Marvin was out of shape for his Hawks workout. I also remember hearing that CP3 had a very good workout with the Hawks. But I remember hearing somebody saying Woody did not want CP3 (I dont remember what the reason was).
But for those blaming BK for drafting Marvin, that ship has sailed. Blame Rick Sund for resigning him last year for 5 years, $37.5 million.
Blame Rick Sund for resigning Bibby at 3 years, $18 mil (although Woody has not helped the situation). Not sure if we should blame Rick for ZaZa though.
But give Rick Sund credit for trading for Jamal.
Didn’t Woody say he would call on Joe Smith in the playoffs? He played 23 minutes so far in 10 games (0 points).
It will be interesting to see what Rick (and JJ) does this summer. That picture of JJ on the ajc.com page with his jersey over his face is disturbing. If I had to guess right now, I would say JJ signs somewhere else.

I’m 60 years old and have been a Hawks fan since ‘68, but I will NOT continue on this blog if Woody is back. I’ll still watch the games, but if he is back the blog will become WAY too tiresome and the very same arguments will be re-hashed over and over again. No thanks.
As far as my fanhood goes, it will remain. But goodbye to this blog if Woodson comes back. But don’t worry. I’ll be sure to come by and give you some parting shots.

“Trade horford! What a waste of defense. Sorry bubba crew and florida fans. We will never get past the 2nd round with the number 18th shot blocker amongst NBA centers. Horford did not receive any votes on the defensive player of the year polls, nor did he get any votes on the All NBA player, Josh was the #2 defensive player and JJ made the all NBA team. ”
This same guy always seem to suggest trading Horford, but won’t name a single target to go get.
He always seems to find fault in one man alone.
Never has anything but “he’s the 18th ranked center in shotblocking” to justify his argument.
What’s funny is, Horford averaged as many blocks through the playoffs as J.Smith. I believe they were both averaging 2 per game? Someone can check me on that, but if that’s the only stat you’re gonna throw out there to justify your argument, and even that falls flat, you don’t have much to go on…

QUITTERS -the worst thing you can say about an athlete or a team and the Hawksflat out quit in games 1 and 3.
Marvin Williams has been exposed for a truly poor use of a high pick. Marvin could not play among the first 8 or 9 for the better teams in the East, much less the West where there is more talent.
Joe Johnson turns down big $$$ from the Hawks and then stinks up the playoffs and now has the nerve to dismiss the fans as unimportant. No wonder he mostly keeps his mouth shut – better to sit silently and let people think you a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt!
Say goodbye to Joe and Woody, and hopefully Marvin but who in their right mind would take Marvin and his contract to be a role player off the bench?

I personally would love to bring the guy back if we were to get another headcoach in here. NO WAY I’d throw max money at the guy, but if you can lock him up for around 14-15 million a year, I’d say bring him back.
However, there will definately be a team out there that’ll dish JJ bigger bucks than the Hawks do, and JJ will go where the money takes him. He’s not going to pass up the money to stay here.

Sautee,
Do not give up hope, there is a sound core of players who give effort and have talent and there is always the chance Josh Smith will decide to give the effort his God-given talent deserves. I have seen all but perhaps 25 home games since 1968, in person, and this team is significantly more talented than most of the other 41. The exceptions are the 1st year and the Wilkins, Rivers and Willis teams, along with the Maravich teams for the most part. Pretty sad that those are the only teams to come to mind out of 41.

JJ is not worth the max. He is a great player but he is not a great player. He loves Woody because Woody simply said, Joe shoot every shot. But JJ would be so much better with a decent coach.

Woody did win more games each year but I could argue the East has declined in each of those years and 60% of the games are played against Eastern Conference teams. From a seat near the bench I see a coach who does not make in-game adjustments, continues to switch his center on to a point guard (this same tactic beat San Antonio last night) and the offense may well be the poorest design in the league. I know Greg Popovich is a great coach but the switching very nearly beat the Hawks in the 1st round and tonight the same switch was made at least twice even when there was no screen on simple postion swaps directly in front of the Hawk bench.
The manner in which the Hawks often look lost on defense seems to indicate the defensive schemes are not well planned or are poorly explained to the team. Layups seem to be a freebie in the Hawk defensive plans.

Basketball 101, you have some funny arguments. I guess you don’t even take into account the postseason? Anybody who has taken basketball 101 should know that Horford has come up huge in the playoffs. He was by far the best player we had in the first series and he had a huge game 2 this series against Howard, who we all know is the best center in the NBA. And Horford is regularly credited for his defense around the NBA. He was voted by the coaches to the All-Star team for a reason. And JJ is very good…sure, but he disappears in April and May every year. And he has zero chance of getting any better than he is. While Horford has a lot of room to grow by continuing to improve his post game.

“Hawks fans:
Are you astonished that Iso-Joe doesn’t work, when we use it as our solitary offensive play?
Are you baffled when our defense switches on every screen, leaving our lumbering big men flailing away at our opponents’ lightning-fast point guards; and our 6′1″ point guards attempting to block the best 6′11″ center in the game?
Are you befuddled at our box-out strategy of allowing Dwight Howard to collect his own rebounds, uncontested, off of his own missed free throws?
Does the multitude of poor coaching decisions confuse you? Well, it obviously doesn’t confuse our opponents. I could almost hear Van Gundy cackling with glee as ZaZa attempted to swipe at Orlando’s 971 open three-point attempts in Game 3.
Don’t worry, Hawks fans. Come join the celebration on Monday night, when we send off Mike Woodson forever. These are great seats, Section 110, Row H on the aisle. Face value is $85, but I am giving you the opportunity to send Woodson on his way for $65/ea. This is an incredible value, especially when you consider that Philips Arena will have spa services standing by to shave your eyebrows off in support of our soon-to-be ex-coach.
-Shout in amazement when they re-enact Jason Kidd’s crash into Woodson, who was illegally standing on the court, which drew a technical foul which cost the Hawks an overtime game against the Mavericks.
-Cheer with glee when the jumbo-tron tries to show Avery Johnson sightings in the stands.

Wrong. Here’s the link: http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=3213
Scroll down to postseason game log and you’ll find that Al had TWO blocked shots in both Game 1 AND Game 2. His blocks per game average for THIS series is now 1.3 / gm.

The first thing the Hawks need to do this summer is to decide whether Mike Woodson fits into their future plans or not. Second they need to establish an identity as a team. Third they need to find the players to make their identity applicable, and if they replace Mike Woodson they’re probably going to lose Joe Johnson as well. If that happens, the Hawks will need to resign Josh Childress and try to sign John Salmons or make a trade for Devin Harris if the Nets win the draft lottery. The Hawks will have to improve their bench as well. To sum it up the Hawks need players with a high basketball IQ and heart.

boy, it has taken what five years for jj to be a stand up guy and say “i am not leading these guys sometimes when we lose”. then he takes it back and says he is above criticism by saying fans who see this for what it is and tell him about it dont matter and he doesnt care if they come to games or not. my goodness let him go and let the door hit him on the way out if he does his iso joe thing to slow it down. he better hope folks dont show up for game four. he has provided them with a huge reason to express themselves more. we will see him sulk a bit again is my guess.
has the team finally quit?
yes, i guess it would be relevant to see how good and how far this magic team goes before completely judging what this team can do in comparison to others. the question is will the magic continue to dominate all the teams as it heads for a championship? only problem is we have not looked as good as the bobcats so we may not be as good as them as the season concluded. we certainly havent improved as the season went on which was my greatest concern.
basically this team doesnt have an identity. it is not an defensive team. it is not a team that knows how to score important points when it has to because it doesnt know whether it is best to work it inside out, through josh or to do it by isolating jamal and jj with the occasional touch and shot by its point guard left watching the action instead of leading the charges. whatever marvin is left out of the offense completely making it four on five every possession. who designed this juggernaut?

Basketball 101 or TS, whatever you choose to go by,
I just found it a bit humorous that you’d rant for 3 or 4 posts about how the Hawks won’t get any further with Horford in the middle. But then, in your preceding post, you write about how we could use a “Lebron” or “Kobe” or a “Wade” or a “MJ”. Not a center…
I just figured you’d at least mention one of those precious centers that you’re constantly drooling over on here.
You said yourself that at this point, Horford offers the most value. Just ask yourself, why is this the case? Why would other teams value Horford? He’s the 18th ranked shotblocking center. You can’t build around him. What “true-center” would we get?
And, I’m not about to go back and read through all of your baseless posts to find one name. I’ve yet to hear you mention ONE center the Hawks have a legitimate chance of snagging. Until you do, I’ll take you for what are…

“Horford did not receive any votes on the defensive player of the year polls.”
Since when do you care about voting? Maybe since it started working well for your pointless arguments?
You’ve constantly down-played Horford getting voted into the All-Star game by coaches. Why should you care about votes?

“nor did he get any votes on the All NBA player, Josh was the #2 defensive player and JJ made the all NBA team .”
More polls? More voting?
JJ made the all NBA team?
And Horford didn’t make the All-Star game?

At least Al Horford plays with heart. Josh Smith cause the Hawks game two in Orlando with all of his turnovers.

“You are right I mentioned very rare and current players to build around… Is howard still a center? or did you ignore that ?”
The way you go off about centers, you’d think every name on your little list would’ve been a center…
But, the one and only that came to mind is D.Howard?
Shocker.
Maybe you might be starting to realize, there aren’t too many Dwights around…

The Hawks need to get a Head coach. Establish a team identity. Acquire the right players needed to compliment their identity.

I guess I’m mistaken.
I thought he was voted in by coaches…
Hope that makes you feel better.
You’re still the one suggesting we trade our ALL-STAR CENTER for an unnamed center…

Obviously Basketball 101 has a chip on his/her shoulder as it relates to Al Horford because the arguments just aren’t coherent. Ex-girlfriend or some other personal reason perhaps. The basketball stats and observations just don’t jive and reality.

For all of you idots out there saying let joe walk, next year do you really want to see your starting backcourt consist of Bibby and Crawford? Lol, two guys with ZERO defense. Fans say the darnest things.

If we had d-wade we still would have lost. If you cant hype YOURSELF up for the game, there is NOBODY in the world who can do it for you. You have to motivate YOURSELF FIRST. Stop saying its ALL Joe fault. I See why Joe got mad at the Fans. Instead of bashing ur teams best player, why dont you get behind him so ur ownership can get more guys to compliment him? Now if we lose Joe we are going to have the WORST defensive back-court in the HISTORY of SPORTS!!

I DON’T THINK CHILDRESS SUCKS ….. HE’S BETTER THAN MARVIN
IF YOU BE TRUTHFUL W/ YOURSELF & PLACE JOSH CHILDRESS …. IN PLACE OF MARVIN WILLIAMS THIS ENTIRE YEAR W/ HIS ATTITUDE, MINDSET, & SKILLSET, BASICALLY MORE AGGRESSIVE NATURE ON OFFENSIVE & DEFENSIVE END …. I TRULY BELIEVE WE WOULD BE IN A BETTER POSITION RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!

2 For John, Childress wasn’t a better defender than Marvin, and he couldn’t shoot better than Marvin. So if you placed him in this starting line up, his defender would’ve been able to camp down in the lane and not have to worry about him shooting from the perimeter.

If JJ decides to sign with the Bulls, the Hawks should resign Josh Childress. Trade Marvin Williams to Portland for Rudy Fernandez, and if the Nets win the draft lottery trade Bibby and our first pick to New Jersey for Devin Harris.

Like I said before JOHN 2 FOR JOHN DREW, Josh Childress sucks!!!! He had no jump shot!! At 6′8″ playing small forward that is a required fundamental in the NBA!! We are really hurting at the most critical position besides the #1, pt. guard position and that is the small forward. Joe Johnson and AL Hartford have issues but they need alot of help. Notice I did not mention the #5.You can still win a champion with a “D” league center…If I were a GM there was no way I would have taken Josh C. over Andre Iqudollar. Who is a far superior player than Josh C. will ever be. Oh by the way he and Rudy Gay are averaging almost 20 points a night at the #3! That would have solved the problem of taking the scoring load off our guards..Unfortunately Marvin, Josh S, are not wired to be bonifide scorers..Its the GM’s job with the help of his multi million dollar staff to figure that out. I don’t blame the players because they don’t have the skill set. I blame the GGGGMMM!!!! Orlando is probably the best team in the league defending the perimeter, that’s why our guards are not getting good looks at the rim and are constantly under duress on the offense. This has been going on for at least 3 yrs when we match up with Orlando!!! Nothing new under the Sun… Notice how Orlando can attack our defenders with there #3 and #4 on the perimeter or they can put in on the floor and attack the rim!! Their #3 and #4 are far more skilled than ours!!! That’s why they are contenders and the Hawks are not..nor will they be unless Rick Sund steps up his game BIG TIME!!!!!!!!
