ORLANDO– “Almost need the perfect game to beat this team,” Woody said. If that’s true, “almost perfect” for the Hawks does not include things like a 15-point fourth quarter, allowing a 35-point third quarter when they had control of the game and getting scorched for 56 percent shooting.
– “We know we can play in this arena and we can play with these guys,” Smoove said. “We just have to establish ourselves. We have to look at the bright side. We played hard and we didn’t just let them roll over us.”
–The Hawks lost by 14 points despite being nearly perfect from the line, seeing only 39 minutes of Dwight Howard due to foul trouble and a bloody nose and holding the Magic to 17 points in a quarter. “You have to look at the positives,” Jamal said. “We came in their place and were down one entering the fourth quarter. That shows you we are right there.”
– I understand the Hawks have to maintain that positive state of mind but it’s little solace if they are actually trying to win this series. Is this the really the best they can do at Orlando? Take a lead at halftime, spit the bit in the fourth quarter and lose by double digits?
– “I think we are good enough to play with anyone in the league,” Al said. “We have to keep improving and build on how we played in the first half.”
– The Hawks were a model of offensive efficiency in the second quarter: 9 of 21 shooting, 10 of 10 free throws, six offensive rebounds for eight second-chance points and five assists. The first quarter was good, too. “I think we had more movement going around instead of keeping the ball on one side and playing isolation,” Al said. “We were moving the ball and just sharing it. When we play like that, we are at our best.”
– They didn’t play like that in the second half: 41 points, 12 of 33 shooting. J.J. and, to a lesser extent, Jamal were the culprits. The Magic are a good defensive team but the Hawks make it easier for them when the ball stays in one place.
– You had to figure Al would start making jumpers. When he does, it usually means the offense is flowing and Dwight is away from the basket, and both of those are good things. “Al Horford, it seemed like he didn’t miss any shots tonight,” Howard said. “I was upset that he was just on fire.”
– Bibby played just four minutes after halftime, none in the fourth quarter. Maybe having him out there would have improved the flow but, considering the way he defers to Joe, maybe not. Jamal had the Hawks playing faster. He went hard to the basket, too, getting six free-throw attempts.
– “Mike will be back in there Saturday ready to go,” Woody said. “That’s not my worry. It’s all about trying to win. I thought Jamal was playing pretty well but we just didn’t have that in the fourth quarter.”
– You know what you are going to get when Jamal is running the show. The shot distribution was out of wack in the second half: 11 for Jamal, 7 for J.J. and only 5 for Al. So were the minutes: only 5 for Zaza and 4 for Mo.
– VC, Jameer Nelson, Pietrus, and Rashard Lewis combined to make 27 of 51 shots. I still think the Magic just has too many good perimeter players and the Hawks have too many bad matchups out there. That’s something that needs to be addressed in the offseason.
– If the Hawks are going to take the “let Dwight get his” approach, they have to find a way to control all those shooters. Dwight got his and so did Rashard, VC and Jameer. No one is saying it’s easy to do both but that’s what it’s going to take for the Hawks to win this series. “The idea is to put pressure on them,” VC said. “You want to come in as many waves as possible.”
– The Hawks survived Dwight’s 18 points, 6 of 6 shooting and 6 of 9 free throws in the first quarter. He only had 10 over the final three yet the Magic still won going away. “We tried doubling him,” Woody said. “We tried playing him straight up. He got to the free-throw line quite a bit in the first half, but I don’t think that really hurt us. Their threes coming down the stretch were huge in terms of our rotation. We were slow there and they were able to knock down shots there.”
– The Hawks had a 57-49 lead at halftime and then almost immediately gave it back. They started the quarter by coming up empty on five consecutive possessions, including three turnovers. “We just fell apart to start the third quarter to give them momentum to get back in the game,” Woody said
– The Hawks didn’t let it get away from them at that point. The lead changed eight more times over the last nine minutes of the period, the last time on Nelson’s running, banked-in 3-pointer at the buzzer. “I think we relaxed and that’s a big momentum shot for them going into the fourth quarter,” Woody said.
– The Hawks were down just 88-87 early in the third. Then the Magic ripped off runs of 10-0 and 9-0 as the Hawks missed 8 of their next 9 shots, including four in a row by Jamal. “We just didn’t have anything left in the fourth quarter,” Woody said.
– At least the Hawks didn’t stay down once they got down like they usually do on the road. “I think we realized that we had to play harder than what we did [in Game 1],” Al said. “We got away from our game plan in the first game and we learned from that and moved on. We tried to put a full game together tonight but just couldn’t do it. We just have to go home and handle our business and win at home.”
– I’m out, Hawks fans.

MC, I am very surprised that you don’t have anything in your report regarding Josh Smith’s pouting and lack of effort to start the second half. That was a huge turning point in the game, and his lack of effort led to several open and converted Magic 3’s.

Considering the way he gets abused by Jameer Nelson like underage prostitutes do by Lawrence Taylor, definitely not. Give Woody credit for realizing how much of a liability the “teacher’s pet” has become and getting his azz out of there.
Like you mentioned the Hawks had an 8 point lead at halftime and almost immediately gave it back, but they still hung around until the beginning of the 4th, holding that lead for much of the time. Not trying to pick on you, but what you didn’t mention is that Orlando made up that deficit in the first 4 minutes of the quarter when Bibby was on the floor, and as soon as Crawford came in for Bibby the Hawks stabilized the game and stopped the Magic run. Bibby was awful tonight, just as he was in Game 1, and just as he has been for most of these playoffs.

Darrell, Harris and Lopez are great fantasy basketball players, but you do know they won a total of 12 games this year right? You really think this 53-win team will benefit by remaking their core around the core of one of the worst teams in the history of the league?

“We know we can play in this arena and we can play with these guys,”
– You know you can play in this arena because it’d be strange playing them in a different area for an Orlando home game. And you know you can play with these guys because it says “Orlando Magic” on the posted lineups.
- And sure you can play with these guys, you played with them for 30 minutes in Game 1 and 45 minutes in Game 2, you just can’t compete with them for 60 minutes. Playing is one thing but competing is different

Bibby is done. Dude couldn’t defend the Gatorade cooler at this point……..Marvin has to be one of the softest players I have seen. This dude goes up so weak that its not even funny. Bibby and Marvin should be put on the trading block as soon as the playoffs are over. I don’t even care what they get in return but these two have got to go. Woodrow just cannot make adjustments on the fly. The Magic were killing us with that one play and ol Woodrow couldn’t draw up nothing to stop it.. Unlike the Hawks, the Magic will beat you over the head with something that works until you stop it…… The Hawks on the other hand go away from whats working.

I did not see the first half, but I intend to as soon as I find a download on the web.
But here is some speculative food for thought:
Apparently, we played really well during the first half.
There was ball movement.
Good shot distribution.
JJ got to the line and got points even though his shot was not going in at a good rate.
We out rebounded ORL.
We got Howard in foul trouble.
ALL THE ABOVE is not necessarily standard MO for us. It seems that the team responded to some strategy changes and to some different preparation.
Here, Astro is the moment that you will shut the f*ck up about effort, OK?
Even you came up with a post where SVG praises Woody for the adjustments made.
SO THE ISSUE IS WHY DIDN’T THOSE ADJUSTMENTS COME BEFORE GAME 1??
ISN’T it viable to speculate that the first half would be our standard MO if we were better coached since DAY 1 of the season?
And that, consequently, instead of looking at a very probable sweep we could be talking about a possible upset or at least at a competitive series.
What we saw yesterday only adds up to our “horror show”. Up by 8 at the break and then back to game 1 mode.
If we actually had some offensive plays designed to take advantage of our personnel? Cutters, shots off screens, ball and player movement?
Does anyone really think that JJ would not sink at least 45% of his shots if they came out of ball movement and with the D off balance rather than going 1 on 2, 3 and sometimes even 4 or 5?
JJ was never and will never be Lebron, nor even Wade since he is not as explosive AND since he does not get 1/4 of the calls but he is a terrific shooter.
Do we see Ray Allen – aged 100 right now – struggle in these playoffs or do we see him play well, off screens and after significant motion which has kept the defenses looking to keep up with him rather than stationary waiting for him to go against a wall of out-stretched arms?
And Smoove? Where are his high flying heroics in the playoffs? What do we have as a designed offense to take advantage of his superior athleticism and strength?
Nothing. Instead we have him stationed in the low post (where he now has some decent but not really reliable moves) as if he was a second coming of Tim Duncan or Hakeem.
What about Al? His correct usage is clearly on and off. Wasn’t he looking to beat Howard one on one down low in Game 1, as if he didn’t give away 2 inches and about 30 lbs of muscle to an athletic freak which gets a free pass (most of the time) from the refs?
His speed and outside shot can be used if he plays away from the basket and either shoots or catches ON THE RUN, instead of trying to get around Howard from a stand still position (well sometimes it does work from a stand still position, but Howard is not an immobile center, rather the contrary).
Due to his mobility, balance and athleticism Al can be used like a guard, rotating and shooting (or driving) off an elbow screen. That would keep ORL defense completely off-balance and would open up the paint.
What about Bibby. Isn’t he supposed to be at least an acceptable shooter? Why are there any more shots called for him off picks? If they go in, he can stay on the floor, if they are not going in you can get Jamal in.
Bibby’s first 5 minutes in the game should be ALL OUT giving maximum effort to move the ball and make a few shots. Then he would get a breather with Jamal taking over and giving the D something different to think about.
Bibby could then come in later in the game against the opposing reserves and DO THE SAME: ALL OUT speed and plenty of shots against inferior opposition AND WITH A BIG FRONT COURT playing for us to get the rebounds and to work the pick and roll (ZAZA JOE S and MARVIN) and with MO playing next to him to give some back court D during that period and some extra outside threat.
If Marvin was used on the pick and roll wouldn’t he be effective? He has a decent mid range shot and when he catches on the move he usually gets the call or the basket.
The same that was said for JJ can be said for Jamal. Why almost all of his shots must come from plays where he has the rock and has to shake and bake 3 defenders?
When you repeat a move and a strategy “ad nauseum” aren’t the defenses supposed to get comfortable and figure it out?

Joe Johnson dribbling and dribbling and dribbling and dribbling till the shot clock is down to 4 seconds then trys to pass or shoot is really what killed us this game. Joe’s lack to recognize the flow of the game is critical! He plays as if he is having a special game like he’s been on fire the whole first half! What I have recognized is that. It only takes 1 or 2 of these type of possessions and its like a domino effect on the Hawks players and offense! This is where the momentum and game changed for the worse! Secondly something I’ve also noticed which is key as well when is the last time you all seen Woodson get in one of his players face besides Teague??? When the Hawks are having bad gms or are having a bad spurt where they are not playing like they should they need a coach that will call Timeout and get into its team star players face and challenge him and the team to play better! Woody doesn’t even have the balls to sit Joe when clearly he looks like he is lost out there trying to play to prove he’s an elite player worthy of a max contract instead of playing to win a championship game. We honestly need to sign and trade Joe and Bibby to Suns for Amir Stoudamire and their backup point I think his name is drobnic! Then bring in a defensive big and another player that can bring energy and defend off the bench in Joe Smiths current spot. See if the Warriors would be stupid enough to take Marvin and a draft pick for Brandon Wright and now where getting somewhere! Goodbye Woody hopefully in comes Steve Smith!!!!

In answer to the late night calls for the trade of Josh for a “Perkins-like Center”.
Give me the name of the center you would get for Josh. We keep saying we need a “Perkins like center”….. give me a name…. please.
It is my thought that that person / center doesn’t exist.in today’s NBA.
Is it
Marcus Camby / Brad Miller / Ben Wallace / Andrew Bynum, / Mehmet Okur / Chris Kaman /
Nenad Krstic / Tyson Chandler / Samuel Dalembert / Kwame Brown / Jeff Foster / Brendan Haywood /
Erick Dampier / Rasho Nesterovic / Andris Biedrins / Shaquille O’Neal / Al Jefferson/ Jason Collins / Randolph Morris / ZaZa Pachulia
You may also pick one from the 103 players who played the center position in the NBA this season

Can you imagine Perkins in the current Hawks offense and switching defense? He would look like ZaZa.

Josh Smith is my boy I love his game but somebody tell him to man up this is the NBA playoffs not rec league! If u get hit in the mouth and your teeth is still there u better run up the court and continue playing! Did anybody see when he barely got hit in the mouth in the 4th I think and stayed at half court holding his mouth? Then after the tv timeout he was right back out their playing that reminded me of watching 9year olds playing rec trying to give up cause the gm is not going their way! Josh suck it up and stop making jokes with the other team and stop looking like Dwight used to punk you out when you were little! This is the playoffs so suck it up and go get some balls man!!!!

Everybody keeps talking about how the Hawks hit all their ft’s and rebounded and hit their 3’s and still lost by double digits. Big deal. They scored enough points to win a game, even with the slow 4th quarter. If you score 98, that’s enough offense to win a game. The Magic got red hot at the end of the game. THEY HIT 6 OF 7 3-POINTERS from the end of the third through middle of 4th, and one of those was a 30 foot bank shot at the buzzer. Yeah, the Hawks turned the ball over in the 4th and missed a lot of shots. But a lot of those shots were good looks and by and large they were not long range 2 point jumpers. The year we took Boston 7 we never had a game this close in Boston. Not to mention that Howard played a ton of minutes last night after the 3 blatant no-calls early on and he still finished with 5 fouls. If the refs had called those fouls, it really would have changed the dynamic of the game. Just look at what we did in the 2nd quarter when he was out. If the whistles down low are more fair in Atlanta, don’t be surprised if we take them both. Chartlotte couldn’t capitalize on Dwight’s foul troubles because they’re a poor offensive team. If Dwight gets in foul trouble early, we can definitely go over 100 points.

ALL THAT AND NOT ONE MENTION OF HOW JOSH WAS STUPID ON OFFENSE AND LAZY ON DEFENSE IN THE SECOND HALF? UNBELIEVABLE. CUNNINGHAM HAS NO PROBLEM BASHING JAMAL AND JJ, BUT JOSH GETS A FREE PASS FOR TURNING THE BALL OVER AND BEING HALF-A$$ED CLOSING OUT ON SHOOTERS. “I think we had more movement going around instead of keeping the ball on one side and playing isolation,” Al said. “We were moving the ball and just sharing it. When we play like that, we are at our best.”
Isolations have been the blueprint of this team the last few years, and it all comes back to coaching. After all, you play how you practice, right? And if the players are not playing the way Woody wants them to play, then get the player out of here, or get Woody out of here.
I would like to hear from those fans who said Teague does not get any PT because he has not earned it, or he does not impact the game enough.
Bibby impacts the game alright, but its mostly negative. Maybe with more PT during the year, Teague might have been an option for games like this when Bibby only plays 12 minutes. I just hope Bibby makes a positive impact in the home games so he can stay on the floor.
And for those complaining about Bibby, keep in mind that he is signed for 2 MORE YEARS after this one ($5.6 mil, and $6.2 mil). Thanks Woody and Rick Sund. In my opinion, Bibby’s contract was a reward for what he did when he first got here. I’m not sure if they considered his contributions going forward.
He was always slow, and a big defensive liability. And despite his age, we still gave him a guaranteed 3 year deal (was anyone else offering him 3 years?). I just hope he finds the fountain of youth this offseason.
MC,
” I still think the Magic just has too many good perimeter players and the Hawks have too many bad matchups out there. That’s something that needs to be addressed in the offseason”.
Agreed. As constructed, this team has some flaws, not all of which can be blamed on coaching. If Sund leaves the team intact, then he has to make a coaching change. And if he brings Woody back, then he has to make some roster changes.
I’m also surprised there were no comments about Josh and his lack if effort on defense, especially in the second half.
And whats up with JJ? Another bad shooting night. I can’t help but think his hand is bothering him. His play is disappointing though, because we have needed our star to help carry us on the road, and he has not done that. Thats part of the reason why we are 2-12 on the road in the playoffs, with 9 or 10 of those losses coming by 19 points or more.

you got your moral victory woody! i hope you are proud! i suspect a “close” loss on saturday at home and another blowout on monday to give the magic a sweep.
we missed a great opportunity last night. played a decent first qtr barring defense. 2nd qtr was outstanding. we get a break to start the third with them losing howard–instead of taking the lead up to 15 to 20–we turn the ball over several times and let the magic cut the lead to one as howard re-enters the arena. depressing–so much so that woody has to burn a time out which gives howard more time to get back into the game. stupidity!
the half court shot by nelson was big for orlando–got the crowd even more into it, fired his teammates up and kind of shook up the hawks that had just got a big three from jamaal to give them the lead.
4th qtr was typical hawks basketball. i kept saying the whole game that we couldn’t keep playing this well offensively and i was right–we did it for about 38-39 minutes and than it just stopped!!! and is it me or does the magic shoot better against us than anybody us in the league.

Shouldn’t that be enough to motivate them to run the floor and play with energy? For 4 freaking quarters? Where is their heart? The officials seemed determined to prevent DHoward from repeating the foul trouble issues he experienced against Charlotte. They stood back and allowed him to bully his way over anyone that got in his way. He got so carried away with his new found freedom, they were forced to reel him in and make some charging calls against him, but the calls they made were petty compared to the ones they let go.
You’d think after witnessing Orlando’s regular season domination, Milwaukee’s embarrassing 3gm playoff win streak, and the far too numerous 4th qtr regular season meltdowns, Woodson would get it through his thick stubborn head that his dependence on ISO’s and his beloved switching DEF won’t work, especially in the playoffs.
At halftime, Woodson said he was satisfied with our DEF, which gave up 49pts, so that was all the justification he needed not to make a single DEF adjustment. The Magic obviously made an adjustment, and their players took turns scorching us. Woodson did absolutely nothing after watching their guards beat our C’s and PF’s off the dribble after taking advantage of us switching everything and forcing mismatches.
Woodson simply doesn’t have what it takes to be a playoff calibre HC. He did and said absolutely nothing as JJ consistently disrupted the OFF with his ISO BS, which has been his position all yr long. He did absolutely nothing when Smoove hung back several times on DEF arguing with the officials. Marvin was going to the FT line almost every time he went to the basket, yet he was ignored the entire 2nd half, which has been his position all yr long.
We didn’t get outplayed tonight, we got out coached, bigtime.

Josh Smith reverted back to the Josh Smith I used to hate. All the walking around, not running back on D, standing at halfcourt holding his face while play is going on….he can’t do that stuff.
Really, I am just accepting that the Hawks are totally outclassed this series. Not only to the Magic have a better collection of players, but the Hawks simply do not win these kind of games. They can keep it close, but actually winning the game is a different story.
Also, I know more than half the things these guys say to the media is bullsh#t, but can’t the Hawks give us something else. I mean…Horford is on the podium talking about how the team learned they can’t quit. Really? It’s f’ing May 6th and we’re just learning we can’t quit? Someone needs to write these guys a new script because what they are saying makes them sound stupid.
Only two more beatings to take and we call it a season. Not sure if the Hawks will avoid the sweet…not sure it really matters. Team/organization is not as far along as I thought. There needs to be some changes. 2nd round is about as far as this group can go.
And, I’ve also come to accept that Joe Johnson is not worth a max contract. I love him. He is my favorite player. But, giving him a max deal would cripple the organization for years. I hope he comes back, but if a max deal is the requirement then it is time to let him go.

I’m a huge Josh Smith fan but the only part of his game he has elevated for the playoffs this year is his whinning and complaining. It really is gettting tiresome. You want to jaw at the ref? Fine but do it as you are running back on defense.
Also it is time to kill the iso plays. The Hawks needed to do that I nthe past as they were basically Joe Johsnson and a bag of chips. However, now they have multiple people that can score and play their best when they move the ball. Nobody o nthe tema wants to play that way except maybe Joe johnson and he even doesn’t look comfrotable doing it anymore. I’m fine with crawford doing it on occasion as he can actually create and take people off the dribble. along that line cane we not at least try a different defensive approach? This switching thing ain’t fooling anybody.

It’s clear where the team went wrong. Two things:
1) Josh’s drop from intensity in the 1st half to a clear lack of effort to start the 2nd half
2) Iso plays, when ball movement worked so well for 2 quarters.
Josh’s careless turnovers and Joe’s dribbling down to 6 seconds left on the shot clock twice and getting shot clock violations left me absolutely infuriated!
On a lighter note, Welcome Home Hawks!
Let’s even this series up.

This was yet another Hawks 4th qtr meltdown.I felt that 3 Nelson made at the end of the 3rd was a back breaker for the Hawks. It changed the momentum of the game. They started to doubt themselves and that spells disaster for this team. They stopped running pick and rolls, there was no penetration or ball movement, just a lot of standing around watching Joe and Crawford dribble out the shot clock. Not to forget those dumb turnovers by Josh. Then they decided to stop playing defense.Did Howard even have a foul in the second half?

Hawks show some resiliency the first three quarters but the fourth quarter they start relying on the long ball and dragging around on defense,,result another loss.
If the Hawks can stay conscious and focus the next two games in ATL, I predict two wins for Hawks, series tied 2-2.
Joe Johnson need to hit shoot around.

Section 303,
I agree. It’s been a hard truth for me to swallow, but Joe is absolutely not a max player, or he hasn’t played like it in these playoffs.
If anything, he’s simply the “best of the rest” as they say.
If we have to give up max money to get him, it may be time go in another direction. Take that 5 year – 80K, they probably wanna offer him and sign Rudy Gay and a third tier guy, or work a sign and trade.

Soulstar,
I just doesn’t work that way. Just beacuase we don’t give Joe Johnson a max contract does not mean we have a max contract type deal we can give somebody else. The Hawks are close to the cap and can ONLY go over that on deal with one of their players. So basically we either max out and resign Joe Johsnosn are we can use the veteran exception to go get a ‘contributer’.

I have been a staunch Josh supporter, but I must admit that he showed all his mental flaws in this game. That being said; does anyone remember how he played last year. He had 300% improvement in his overall game over last year. Remember that he is still a young man, and that he did not gain valuable gametime experience in college. What he missed most by skipping to the pros is the mental toughness that he has yet to fully develop.
If he improves his mental and physical game by the same amount this offseason, he will be a first team all-pro for many years to come. If you trade him it will be one of the biggest blunders in Atlanta sports history. Twenty years from now people will be saying “Remember when Atl had young HOF’s Josh Smith and Al Horford? They were so close until they traded JS away just before he broke out!!!! They haven’t been that good sense.”

The main problem is that Joe Johnson looks worn out. Many of the hawks seem tired and I think that impacted their performance at the end of the game. I know that this is the playoffs, but Woody doesn’t use his bench effectively. Where is Joe Smith? I thought we brought him here to Atlanta for his veteran presence in the playoffs.
Also, Marvin Williams is a good support play, but he does not provide any impact on the defense or offense.
I’m interested to see what moves the hawks make this off season. If they continue with this approach to the team I believe we will always have the same result. “Being Average!”
The Truth
May 7th, 2010
9:22 am
There were ominous moments in the second the half that revealed the flaws of this team:
Instead of stretching an 8-point lead to start the 3rd quarter by being aggressive and attacking the basket, the Hawks became lackadaisical as if they had secured the victory already. This led to Orlando’s 6-points gift from the Hawks. The Orlando Magic continued to extend their lead by putting together multiple runs with no real offensive or defensive answer from the Hawks.
Flaw #1: What did Woody tell them in the locker room? He should have been strategizing and making a motivational speak but apparently it didn’t work.
Flaw #2: Bibby was in the game when the defining run took place (enough said).
Flaw #3: Where is our floor leader to calm the ship? Do we really have one? It’s been said that JJ (The 60M man who wants more) leads by example. Well, his MIA 2nd half performance suggests otherwise. Has he thrown Woody under the bus after all the love and support he’s shown him over the years? His playoff performance suggests he has.
Flaw #4: The Hawks Doctor Jekyll defense always leads to their Doctor Jekyll offense. In the movie Mr. Hyde suffered from an identity crisis. Maybe the Hawks can learn something from this movie.
Flaw #5: Why is it when we desperately need to score to stop the bleeding or to turn the tide, the ball falls in the hands of Josh Smith who decision making skills has always been questionable? You would think after these many years this team has been together they would know the nuances of winning a winnable game.

This is what Woody should do for game 3.Bench Bibby and Marvin.Start Teague and Mo.Craford still assumes his six man roll as usual.Teague should be able to handle Jameer,if anything he can keep him out the lane, where he has really abused Bibby. Then on offense he can get into the lane himself and set up other guys, something Bibby doesn’t do.Bibby and Marvin could excel against their second unit.I also like the idea of going big playing Al at the 4,it worked so well in the 2nd qtr,i dont know why he didn’t try this in the second half. And if Josh comes with his little baby fits on Saturday ,i say bench his behind.Lets hope Joe will find his mojo and prove that he is worth a max contract.

i like the idea of tinkering with the starters but woodson won’t give it a shot. i say start your regular starters in game 3 but if we get smoked again–try something different in game 4. why not?
i too have wondered where joe smith has been the whole season??? this guy is too good to not be playing 8 to 10 minutes a half. he didn’t even get in the game last night. what a joke by woodson–he doesn’t know how to use a bench at all.
i would start teague, joe, al, joe smith and josh smith in game 3. bring in bibby for some leadership with the second unit along with marvin, zsa zsa and still use collins and even morris on howard. this might work–who knows–we do know that we’ve done so far is not working!

Give Josh Smith a year or two with a new coach, if he doesn’t get it by then trade him. For all his amazing athleticism and talent, the dude is stubborn as hell and has the basketball IQ of an AND1 player. He is also apparently attending Rasheed Wallace Bitch and Whine Academy. I saw him whining after a play where he jumped up in the air and landed ON Dwight Howard. I thought, oh crap, they called a flagrant on him. Nope, regular shooting foul. Its not surprise Josh doesn’t get calls when he’s bitching about obvious fouls like that.
As late as the end of the regular season, I though Josh was untradeable. I thought he was the best player on our team. After the Bucks series and the first two Magic games, we really may need to trade this guy while he’s still worth something.
Also get rid of Bibby and Marvin Williams. They are taking up playing time that could go to other better or improving players. I’m still not sure about Joe, of course if he wants max money let him walk, but a better head coach may be able to find ways to utilize him better than Iso-Joe-24/7.

Its very obvious that Josh Smith is retarded. He has all the talent, but doesn’t know how to use it.He played a perfect first half, then he quit on his team like a little heifer. He is such a wimp sometimes. The Hawks do have one match up in their favor.Carter defending Marvin is an advantage on the block, but how many times did the ball go in there.Instead we keep putting it in Joes hands and we see where thats getting us,no where.I cant stand this anymore.

My 2 cents:
Good game for 2 quarters, then the Hawks lost focus and fell apart by the 4th. I had my doubts about whether they could keep up the solid play for an ENTIRE game – and should we have to feel this way about this team? That’s a major red flag. I’m still pretty happy with the way they played for the first part of the game, though. Mental toughness/focus would have served them well after the half – both the players and the coaching staff take the blame for that. Good game from Horford, JJ surprised me, Smith did fine until he started whining to the refs in the 2nd half.

Obviously Josh’s attitude and JJ’s overdribbling was a huge problem last night. Al is the only player you can hang your hat on for the Hawks. He has the worst match-up and look at the numbers he still comes up with, with an injured leg. He’s the only one that always brings the same intensity and has that ‘never-say-die’ attitude.
I haven’t written off this series yet. We are a jekyl and hyde team between the road and home. Let’s see how we fare this Saturday. Lose that one and season’s basically over.
As for off-season, no way in this world do I offer JJ a max contract or anything close. Here’s an idea: Sign and trade JJ to a team with a lot of cap space that wants to give max money. Package Marvin with him. Should be able to get something good in return because there are a lot of people out there who think that we just misuse Marvin and that he has a lot of potential. Bring Childress back in from Greece. With all the problems going on in that country right now- raising taxes, cutting pensions, fire-bomb protests- I’d be shocked if he doesn’t opt out. We still have his rights.
Childress is a great team player, great perimeter defender, and can score without plays being called for him. That’s exactly what we need. Then I would think that in return for JJ and Marvin we can probably get a decent big- maybe Chris Kaman and then a shooting guard who doesn’t dominate the ball- Ray Allen-type. I don’t want Ray, but somebody like him who scores without dominating the ball and who can defend better than Ray.

If we are honest about the Hawks, then we must admit we have reached a tipping point. Either the team is still young and only needs a new coach and some massaging of the roster. Or we have reached our best with this roster and coach and need to make some significant changes. I thinkits the latter not the former, and that kills me to say it. If we choose option 1 and commit max money to JJ then we going “all in” with, I think, a flawed lineup. We would have committed max money to a guy who CANNOT be the leader of the team because it’s just not in him personality wise. We will be committing to a miscast and undersized front line that can’t consistantly play with the elite front lines you have to beat to win a championship. (3 forwards instead of a center, PF, and SF). This lineup has reached it’s potential and if we give JJ max money, with this ownership group that holds up a cardboard sign outside the “The Varsity” every yr that says “team broke down, just need a few million to get on the road again,” then we will have moved all in with maybe “2 pair” to complete the poker analogy. 2 pair has never won a poker tourny.

Justin, I completely agree that Al is the front line player we can hang our hat on. Im not sure if a sign and trade will work with JJ. The Bull seem to really want him and JJ wants to explore what he is worth on the open market. He wants to have all options open to him with multiple teams courting him, and I cant fault him for that. I would definately consider trying to swap Marvin straight up for another SF around the league and Im realistic about what you could get, but another struggling SF and Marvin might improve with a new team/city. The real question is do you continue with an undersized center in AL or trade Josh and move Al to the 4 where he can dominate against most other 4’s and hold his own against the elite 4’s in the league. The bottom line is we cannot match up against the elite teams with AL/Josh combo at 4 and 5. IT CANNOT BEAT THE LAKERS, CAV’S, MAGIC, OR OUR ALTERNATE EGO’S IN THE WEST, THE NUGGETS. But on the whole, Justin, I agree with the sentiment of your post.

MICHAEL CUNNINGHAM-PG has been this teams problem since Woodson arrived, and to say we have to address the problem after he’s been here 6yrs tells you where the real problem is. It was Woodson who didn’t want to draft CPaul or DWilliams because he didn’t think they were capable of performing at this level. It’s Woodson who has this stupid bias against young PG’s, that won’t allow him to commit to any effort to their development.
It’s Woodson who refused to give young PG’s like ALaw and JTeague the consistent mins, support and opportunities to progress. It was Woodson who insisted on giving major mins to Bibby, the NBA’s slowest, least athletic, non penetrating PG, who regressed to the point of hurting the team and becoming a total liability, with his low production and inconsistency.
At this point, saying we need to address the PG position is synonymous to saying we need to address the HC position.

Will someone suggest to Coach Woodson….”When the other team has put a 7-2 run on us, call a timeout, instead of letting the run balloon into a 19-2 run.” All he has to do is integrate an automatic timeout rule to give the guys a breather, and stop the momentum of the opposing team’s run. By the time Coach Woodson normally calls a timeout in this situation, the damage is usually already done and the fat lady’s warming up!

I also believe that we have to throw our cap over the wall and move Teague to starting PG next yr and see what we have. Bibby can provide some quality minutes off the bench, especially when he’s hot. And, of course, the only way that happens is if Woody is not there because he treats Bibby like his son. (not being sarcastic, its just the truth and as a father of 5 kids, I would love to have Bibby as my son) With multiple fast, athletic, talented PG’s in the eastern conference,(Rose, Jameer, Rondo, Mo Williams, Felton) we have to find out if TEague is the answer or not. Only way to know is play him 35 min a night. I think he is the answer but he has to start and play with the first team for us to know one way or the other.

Ken, I basically agree with your post on PG but you let Billy Knight completely off the hook. Woody doesn’t make final determination on whe we drafted. Knight was the GM, Woody’s boss, and if he had determined that we draft CP then Woody would have had to deal with it. I agree with your summation on Woody’s near maniacal fear of young PG’s but Knight was the boss and he deserves the blame on who was or wasn’t drafted. Blame Woody for not playing TEague enough (personally thought Law was overrated and will never sniff anything but the lemon pledge on the pine in the NBA) but BIlly knight was the giant screw-up when it comes to missed opportunities in the draft.

VenomSpitter, I don’t have a problem with that either. If Sund wants to trade him straight up for another SF who has some unachieved talent and needs a change of scenery, or keep him after letting JJ walk and moving BIbby to a backup role. In that scenario, I think Marvin may thrive too. I think its 50/50 on which way to go and would really depend on what other SF you could get in a trade for Marvin. I have been saying for some time that, while Marvin has some downside, he cannot find his role in Woody’s limited offense. He’s the 3rd option, behind JJ and Bibby, when it comes to outside shooting, and the 3rd option down low behind Josh and Al. He doesn’t know or really have a “role” in our offense. Some would say, and maybe correctly, he needs to carve out his role. Take the bull by the horns. Maybe he’s still young (of course Im getting sick of hearing that excuse for Josh so if Im honest I have to say the same thing about Marvin and the “youth” excuse) and with a fascillitator at PG (Teague) and a different SG who doesn’t just try to pound the air out of the ball (JJ) but either shoots if open or rotates the ball when covered, then Marvin might flourish. I just dont know which way is the best to go. Its about the 3rd thing to think about after signing/letting go JJ or deciding on whether to keep AL/Josh or trading one. Its down the line after bigger decisions

amongst other things.. the Hawks need to upgrade our bench. say an Anthony Morrow..? other than Jamal nobody else is really a threat to score and put heat on the opposition. allowing our opponent to fully rest their primary guys while we struggle to get offense. Joe Smith should have seen a lot more minutes people. he’s a veteran presence, who will play smart and rebound the ball. a pick and pop threat.

I’m not upset with that game last night. We were right there with them going into the 4th quarter. It was almost a complete 180 degree turn from what we showed in Game 1.
The 2nd quarter was one of the best balanced quarters ( offensively and defensively ) that I’ve seen this team play all year. And Horford was excellent.
In the end, it all comes down to 2 things . . . 1) defensive rotation out on the shooters . .. and 2) our guards making the shots they normally make. When the guards went cold, that’s when the game started to turn.
With us being at home for Game 3, I fully expect the complimentary players to play much better, due to the energy of the crowd. Let’s hold serve at home Hawks.

JJ made 5 shots last night . . . 4 of those shots were assisted. While that’s good that he made some assisted shots, that’s almost unheard of from JJ.
You’re talking about a guy who has been so good of an ISO scorer, that he only saw 39% of his shots being assisted during the regular season. The fact is that when the shot clock winds down, you want the ball in his hands because he’s the dude who can create and make his own shot.
He didn’t do that tonight . . . and hasn’t been able to score off the bounce in the last 5 games. But for the Hawks to function, he has to take a few of those types of shots. That’s been his role on this team for the last 5 years. When a play breaks down, make something positive happen.
Unfortunately for him and the Hawks, until he starts making a few of those contested shots that he normally makes, we’re not going to be able to beat the Magic. And I still say that he needs to be around the 20 shot range, regardless of what he’s shooting, in order for this team to have a shot at winning. If he’s 4 – 9 in the first half, I want him shooting enough to possibly see him end up at least 8 for 19. Even if he misses, our frontline may offensively rebound a few of his misses, to give us a 2nd chance in that possession to score.
I thought he was going to come out aggressive tonight, via what he said during shootaround yesterday. But he didn’t. Only taking 3 shots in that 3rd quarter, wasn’t going to cut it, even if he missed all 3. The top tier stars in this league don’t stop shooting the ball. JJ simply has to get his shots up.
He does need to be more decisive though. Either shoot the ball, or attack in the paint to try to create a shot for someone else. If his thumb is bothering him ( as O’Brien suggests ), he may need to go into full playmaker mode, if his shots aren’t falling. But to me, I just feel that he needs to have in his mind that he is going to shoot the ball, and make a decisive move to get his shot off.

Great 1st half, but its a 4 Qtr game….on another note – Josh Smith acted like a child and needs to grow up somewhere else…there needs to be some accountability and consequences for his antics…in the old days the players (like Bird and Magic) would call him out on this crap – since its obvious the players and coaching staff won’t do it I guess it comes down to the fans and journalists to speak up…This Team, despite tons of talent, lacks leadership and discipline. Northcyde, agree with some of what you say but whether JJ’s thumb is hurting or not, he still is indecisive when his thumb is fine. He drives me crazy with his tentiveness. He’s not the super star/leader that should get a max contract, but that’s the only way we will be able to keep him because other teams, with far more financial resources than the ASG, will give him max money. And that is the conundrum with JJ. He could be a great NO. 2 but he will never be a NO 1 for a championship caliber team. That’s why we cannot commit max money to a player who is “fools gold” when it comes to the idea he is an elite player that will LEAD the Hawks to a cfhampionship. He cant do it. I have seen enough to make that determination. I would continue to give him what the ASG offerred earlier this yr (4 yrs at 15 mil per) but no more. He wants more and probably can get it on the open market, but he doesn’t deserve Kobe, 20+ mil/yr, type money. Some team, the Bulls probably, will overpay for him and when they find out that he’s a no. 2 and not a no. 1 they will regret it.

Anothnoy Morrow still has another year on his contract but that is not a bad call to bloster the Hawks bench for more firepower. The most pressing need for the Hawks other than center is the point guard position. When you look at the new wave of NBA point guards which are now quick penetrating players, you need someone who can play defense at that position. That is what the Hawks lack in the worst way. We got Joe Johnson spending all of his energy trying to guard Nelson and Jennings (Bucks Rd1) when those guys are really way too quick Johnson. I don’t know if Teague is going be that guy but next year is huge for his development.

When Crawford thinks he’s “hot”, he’s going to try to take a game over. He was 3 – 4 FG in that 3rd quarter, had just hit a long 3 at the end of the quarter, and was 6 – 11 FG going into the 4th.
The turning point in that game last night came when JJ went out of the game for a well needed breather. Horford was at the line, getting ready to make his 2nd FT to make it an 88 – 87 Orlando lead. After catching a break with Pietrus missing 2 FTs, Crawford proceeded to miss 4 shots in a row on 3 possessions. He went from being “hot”, to “ice cold’ in a mere 2 minutes.
Make any of those 4 shots, and you’re looking at staying right within 2 or 3 points of the Magic and possibly buying JJ some time on the bench to get rested up for the stretch run. Here is the turning point in the game:
- Hawks down 1, after Pietrus 2 missed FTs. Jamal comes down, gets a screen set on his man by Josh, and takes a wild out of control 12 footer. 3 Magic players were around him and Al was wide open on the other side along the baseline. Hawks get bailed out in transition with Pietrus traveling. Woody calls a timeout ( probably telling Jamal to calm down and possibly buying more rest time for JJ )
- Hawks come out with more movement, seemingly trying to get Horford midrange jumpshot. The shot isn’t there for Horford and he gets the ball back to Jamal. Jamal has Howard playing him softly, so he hesitates a little, and decides to take a 18 footer that he misses. Smoove gets the rebound and immediately passes to Jamal in the corner for a 3 pointer. He misses that shot. Jamal is simply being aggressive as a shooter. But because he’s a streak shooter, he’s now missed his first 4 shots in the quarter.
- After Horford fouls Howard, and Dwight makes 2 FTs, the Hawks come down again. Marvin dribbles across the time line and does a hand-off with Crawford. Josh sets a slight high screen ( not really a screen, he just stands there ). Crawford goes from the right side of the court, dribbling to the left side. He has Jason Williams on him, so he’s looking for his shot all the way. After 11 dribbles, he throws up another wild runner ( similar to the 1st shot I described in this sequence . . and once again over Howard ), and misses. Marvin gets the offensive rebound, but gets his shot blocked by Carter from behind. Josh gets hit in the face by Carter, and grabs his face.
- Magic race the ball down in transition 4 on 5, because Smoove is still holding his face. After a few passes, Vince gets a wide open look for a 3 and drains it. And Smoove still hadn’t crossed halfcourt yet.
In a mere 2 minute stretch, with JJ out of the game, we see the Hawks miss 5 shots ( with Crawford missing 2 wild runners ), and Smoove’s inability to at least get back down the floor after being popped in the face, leading to 5 points by the Magic to get the crowd ( and most importantly Vince Carter ), energized in this game. We’re now down 6 . . and the momentum has totally shifted.
That was the turning point.

Clyde- It is SAD that an NBA can only function with only one player bailing them out. JJ isn’t the answer. You can’t dribble for 20-22 seconds, not pass the bal and expect to get a decent shot. Not going to happen, not for your beloved JJ or any other player.
You will see we will be a better offensive team when is playing in NY next year.
When JJ started the ISO Joe show in the 4th quarter that is when the game was lost.

JJ actually not so subtley called Josh Smith out in the media last week about his whining to the refs. It did nothing. Woodson has been after him for years but he just doesn’t listen. Not sure if that is the coaches fault or Josh’s. Probably a mix of both. He should of been behcned after the first time he failed to eveen get past mid court before orlando scored while squaking at the refs.

Northcyde, agree on that being the turning point but how many other times are we gonna be hit the first 25 or 26 free throws in a row. Uh, not many, and without that we would have been behind by 7 or 8 at the end of the 3rd qtr instead of 1. JJ cannot put a team on his back against an elite team. He thinks he can and he’s told he can but he CANNOT do it. And without a dominating post player, ala Howard, its just about impossible to win a champoinship without an elite No. 1 at SG or SF. I like JJ, as a person, and he can be a good no. 2 on an elite team, but he’s not a no. 1 (talent wise or from a leadership standpoint). He’s a NO. 2 wanting NO. 1 money on a team with limited financial resources. SQUARE PEG-ROUND HOLE. We will end up letting him go and have to find another SG or move Jamal into the starting spot.

south ga boy . . . I would counter that by saying that JJ didn’t even ATTEMPT to put the team on his back. That;s part of the problem. His deliberate style is meant to try to set other people up, or create a shot for himself at the end of the shot clock. That’s the design of what ISO-JJ is about. He passes out of ISO much more than he shoots out of ISO, and that’s my main problem with him.
I know he has to be the playmaker on this team ( he led the team with 5 assists ). But sometimes, a star player has to be selfish, and look for his own shot. Crawford has that mentality as the designated instant offense guy. But he has it a little too much, because he’ll take bad shots with multiple people on him in traffic.
But JJ doesn’t have enough of that mentality, because he’ll pass up good looks in order to get other people the ball. And instead of attacking, he’ll shoot the fadeaway jumper, even when it isn’t falling. That’s something that he needs to stop.
When his shot is off, either take a quick squared-up jumper, or continue to try to get in the paint to see if he can get a closer look. But fadeaway jumpers are only good when your shot is on. When it is off, the fadeaway is not a good rhythm shot. JJ needs to attack much more than what he’s doing, instead of trying to draw the double team so he can pass to the open shooter.
Crawford does this, but he just takes too many questionable shots in a short amount of time.

Woody may have to look at the tape, and see if playing less of Horford and Smoove in the game together, may be the way to go. When Horford was allowed to play PF for that stretch in the 2nd, he looked damn near dominant.
That’s not to say to keep Smoove out of the game, but if Horford is going to play that well against the Magic’s PFs, then that’s a matchup that the Hawks may need to exploit as the series goes on.

First off . . . I hate the beta stage of ESPN3, because they’re not leaving the replays of games up for a long time. The Hawks v Magic game is already off of that site for some reason.
But if you want to see Josh Childress play in the Euroleague Final 4 . . his team ( Olympiacos ) will be playing Partizan Belgrade in about an hour on ESPN3.com I’m not sure if you need to be hooked up to a cable modem or be a member of ESPN.com to see the game. Northcyde,
JJ will pass up a good look to get others the ball. But he will also take a bad shot instead of passing to somebody else for a good look.
And that’s a big problem with ISOs. Lack of consistency. And sometimes players are not sure if JJ is going to pass or shoot.
So they end up standing around (plus we have seen bad passes out of the double team from JJ because he waited too long).
He was 5-15 last night. But you wanted to see him go 7-20? I don’t think that would have helped much.
I agree about when the game turned. My question is, why did we go away from horford?
And as far as coming home, we were all looking forward to the hawks coming home for game 5 against the inferior bucks. How did game 5 turn out?
I can only be cautiously optimistic with these guys…

O’Brien . . . JJ going 7 – 20 is better than JJ going 5 – 15. 15 shots means that he’s being way too passive in the game. 20 shots means that he’s at least forcing the issue and making the defense play him, which may open up offensive rebound opportunities for us. It also may mean that he’s drawing fouls, if he’s being aggressive.
And the only way shooters get their way out of slumps, is to keep shooting. Now he has to take better shots, but he can’t quit shooting. We don’t have enough reliable offensive threats on the team for him to strictly be a playmaker. We are not Orlando, in which we can bring a plethora of shooters off the bench who may can make their first shot or two as soon as they come into a game.
Bibby is usually JJ’s bail out guy in the ISO, with his ability to knock down the 3. But if Bibby is playing horribly, JJ can’t afford to wait. He has to look for his shot. The same goes if Marvin is missing. Those are JJ’s 2 primary targets when he goes ISO, but passes the ball.
JJ can’t worry about anybody calling him “selfish” or not a team player. Because in reality, the Hawks need him to SCORE THE BASKETBALL. And the only way to score the basketball, is to get up his shots.
So yeah . . . I’ll take 7 – 20 any day over 5 – 16. If he goes 7 – 20 FG . . and still makes 7 FTs . . you’re looking at JJ having anywhere from 23 to 25 points in the game ( if the 2 extra FGs are threes ). And you’re also possibly looking at the Hawks getting opportunities to grab offensive rebounds to score off of his misses.
But we can talk about the offense all day long. Fact is, the Magic shot over 60% FG and scored 63 points in that 2nd half. ESPN is highlighting on how the pick and roll ate us up last night.
The ironic thing about this is . . . the switching defense is designed to prevent getting lit up on the pick and roll. But because we didn’t switch off the pic last night, our guards were constantly going over top of the pic, trailing the ballhandler. This gave the ballhandler ( mainly Vince and Jameer in the 2nd half ), free reign to do what they wanted once they got into the lane. Jameer had the big 3rd quarter, while Vince had the huge 2nd half altogether.

Will you UNGRATEFUL fans realize that we gave a GREAT effort last night. Our organization is about PROGRESS not CHAMPIONSHIPS right now. All we have to do is win ONE GAME in this round and that will be better than last year’s team. Rome was not built in a day. You have to crawl before you can walk. You fans just TOO HIGH EXPECTATIONS for this team. We have already reached our ELITE status because we won over 53 games. Being ELITE is not based on the PLAYOFFS, but the REGULAR SEASON. The real fans are SATISFIED with where this team is. People like BIG RAY knows that it TAKES TIME to win a championship. You people are just UNREALISTIC about this team. It’s about PROGRESSION right now. As long as we have a NUCLEUS like J-SMOOVE (because of his great ball handling and pure shooting), MARVIN “GREAT POTENTIAL AND UPSIDE” WILLIAMS, and AL HORFORD, and last but not least JOE “I WILL CARRY THE TEAM WITH ISOS” JOHNSON, the future looks bright. I couldnt believe how Woody tried to cover up for his teams lackadaisical performance last night against the Magic. The Hwks had complete control of the game and then during a 6:00 minute stretch in the fourth quarter the hawks had six straight turnovers (3 by josh smith) AND two 24-second violation infractions; a total of 8 turnovers which cost us the game. If we had scored on each of those priceless possessions the final score would have been 114-112 hawks advantage. But it wasnt meant to be as the Hawks began to completely unravel and simply handed the game over to the Magic on a silver platter, negating the wonderful effort the Hawks made in the first half. What a wasted effort. If Woody is ok with saying to media “WE HAD NOTHING IN THE FOURTH QUARTER”, tell me whose responsile for his team showing some kind of effort at all in the fourth quarter. Isnt it the coaches responsibility to have his team prepared. Woody tells reporters–look we had nothing to give in the fourth quarter so we could have literally walked off the court after three quarters and called it quits. That speaks volumes to me because the players take on the coaches character. Woody should have been ANGRY AND FURIOUS at his team for the plethera of consecutive turnovers and lack of hustle in the fourth and woody should have said, ‘THE EFFORT THAT MY TEAM GAVE IN THE FOURTH QUARTER IS UNACCEPTABLE AND DOES NOT SHOW PROFESSIONALISM WHATSOEVER.” In fact is is more of a pee wee league than the nba and those players will be accountable the next time they perform like that. Woody was simply saying, look man, we couldnt win the game because we shut the lights out after three quarters; so another team would have had to come in here and finish off the Magic because we were too inept to compete. But isnt that what he said. Thats what he meant when he said, we gave ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in the fourth quarter so we really didnt think we could compete and felt it more comfortable to sit back and watch the Magic stomp us and run us off the floor. WHAT AN EMBARRASSMENT.

I’m trying real hard ‘not’ to sound harsh.
But your knowledge of basketball, although filled with data,
comes across as superficial.
You obviously are well read on the subject but your depth of
understanding leaves me curious?
Example, when I used this post from ‘Najeh’ quoting ‘CB’:
[argueing against Iso-Joe] You never seemed to comprehend his point.
“The problem with the isolation is not the actual isolation,” Billups said. “It’s the lack of movement.” According to Billups, the Nuggets need to do a better job off the ball to help maximize the one-on-one advantages they have against Utah. “A lack of [movement] just lets one guy play against three or four.”
As for Joe being a playmaker:
*Joe is a complete player.
**Joe is not a play-maker!
***Joe is not an Alpha Dog
****Joe would benefit from playing with:
[either/or] a play-maker/Alpha Dog.
This is the stat line of a winning playmaker:(Suns 111/Spurs 102 gm 1)
Steve Nash, PG [37 13-19 2-4 5-6 0 3 3 10 0 0 6 3 +18 33]

ISO-JOE made the only shot. . . off of a set play in which he caught the ball and immediately went into the lane and shot a pull-up 12 footer.
JJ’s problem is that he needs to get more shots up in rhythm, not that he’s shooting too much. SMH @ Bibby being ( – 18 ) in 14 minutes. A lot of that was because of the 1st quarter that Howard had . . but still. ( – 18 )?

I really think that some of you are making too much of this, without looking into the details of what occurred late in the game. The Hawks did not “fall apart” or “lose focus”. They may have failed to get into their correct defensive sets coming down the stretch and were a bit lax in transition defense, but overall, the Hawks really did not deviate from the game plan all that much. A lot of the shots which the Hawks missed in the fourth quarter (particularly Jamal) were good open shots, they just didn’t drop. Also, you should know by now that no matter how good a defense is, skilled offense is still going to generate points. The three-ball is Orlando’s bread and butter, they are bound to hit around 10 threes per game, whether they are contested or not. Sure, contesting shots helps, but after you have been running drills for so long, it almost just becomes routine once you get to your sweet spots. Listen closely to the press conference comments. Even Van Gundy mentioned that most of the problem for the Hawks in the fourth quarter was that they simply missed shots. Some tighter transition defense and change of luck on open shots and this game could easily have been a Hawks win. That’s the way it goes in the NBA sometimes. On a positive note, the Hawks know that they have a strategy that works (no, I’m not talking about the ISO plays) and when they execute it correctly, they will always be in a position to defeat the Magic, regardless of where they play.

LOL@ Grandad. I’ve played basketball on the high school, AAU, and small college level ( as a reserve ). A former PG at that. My knowledge of basketball is EXTENSIVE, and not just based off of watching the game on TV.
Hell, I personally know two current NBA players ( because I used to ball with them in the summers when they made visits home ), and talk a lot of hoops with them as well.
JJ is a playmaker for HIS TEAM. There is no denying that. He’s a playmaker from the 2-guard in the same mold as Brandon Roy is for his team. But at least Brandon has the luxury ( even though he’s having a hard time adjusting ) of playing with a true PG like Brandon Roy. JJ doesn’t even have that.
The 2 PGs that he plays with, are shoot first guys that JJ has to get shots for as well. Outside of maybe Josh Smith, there’s not a single person that sets JJ up for his shots. That’s left up to him.
And how silly of you to bring in a guy who doesn’t even play the 2, and is one of the top 5 playmaking PGs of all time in Steve Nash. That doesn’t diminish my argument about JJ being ( or expected to be ) a playmaker for the Hawks.
The fact is that because JJ is the focal point of the offense, he needs to make the right decisions with the basketball. But he also has to get his points, by any means necessary.
The main problem with his ISOs, is that he’s waiting a little too long for a possible double team to come to him. Personally, I’d wish that he would think score first, but keep his eyes up on the floor to possibly get someone else an easy look ( seeing that he IS the defacto PG on this team ).
Make no mistake Grandad, we need 20 ppg+ the rest of the way out of JJ, in order to win this series, or even make it competitive. And I don’t care how he gets it, whether it be out of set plays, screens, or ISOs.
Regardless . . . he needs to get up more shots for us to be successful.
But once again . . ISO-JOE didn’t lose that game. Defense lost that game. JJ just didn’t shoot well and was nowhere near as aggressive as he should’ve been, so he does get some blame for our fate last night.
It’s just funny that the 4th quarter meltdown started almost IMMEADIATELY after he left the game to get a few minutes rest.

And JJ is also the ALPHA DOG on HIS TEAM. He may be smaller dog, when you compare him to the superstars in the league. But for the Hawks, he is the Alpha Dog.
If he wasn’t, so much negative focus wouldn’t beon him to perform.
LOL . . when a team and it’s fans expect a player to score 20+ ppg – grab at least 5 rebounds – and dish out 5 assists – and shoot at least 45% FG and 80% FT – plus play defense on PGs, SGs, and SFs . . .
. . . you better believe that people consider him the ALPHA DOG, even if they don’t say it or necessarily believe it.
