Atlanta Hawks at Magic Game 2: J.J. is All-NBA but is he fading away?

J.J. can't find his groove.

J.J. can't find his groove.

ORLANDO–A reminder that J.J. is considered to be among the best players in the league, at least by media types: He was named to the All-NBA Third Team, the league announced today. It’s the first time for J.J. and the first time the Hawks have had a player selected since Dikembe in 97-98.

The timing is interesting since J.J. is slumping in the playoffs. He’s not the only one, of course, but he’s the lead dog. Before the playoffs opened, J.J. said he knew that as the Hawks’ veteran star he would take the heat if they don’t meet expectations or get the glory if they make a breakthrough. He said he embraced that role. Now, though, both J.J. and Woody seem to want to avoid putting the onus on him to deliver a big game when the Hawks need it most.

Looking at the other guys on the All-NBA teams, all of them except maybe Bogut would be looked at to be The Man for their team in trying times. J.J. needs help–more from fellow All-Star Horford, second-team All-Defense Smoove, Sixth Man of the Year Jamal and Woody. But if the Hawks’ All-NBA star doesn’t come through it’s hard to see them making this a series. It also could end up costing him in free agency.

– You have to be an Insider to read it, but ESPN.com’s John Hollinger makes a case that Iso-heavy offenses like the Hawks and Blazers run are good for the regular season, not so good for the playoffs.

Atlanta, as the league’s third-best offense, should at least be able to battle these defenses [Milwaukee and Orlando] to a draw. But even before Tuesday’s Game 1 implosion against Orlando, they were struggling. The Hawks can’t make shots, ranking just 14th out of 16 teams in postseason TS percentage. While they’ve still been able to generate second shots (they lead all teams in playoff Offensive Rebound Rate) and have been somewhat successful at avoiding turnovers, the net result put the Hawks 11th among the 16 playoff teams in postseason Offensive Efficiency.

So what is it? Perhaps the Hawks and Blazers have just had some bad games against some pretty good defenses. But between the two, we’ve built up a 31-game sample showing that something more nefarious might be at work.

Obviously, this has important implications for Atlanta’s Game 2 in Orlando on Thursday. Iso-Joe has had its moments; Game 4 of the 2008 Boston series, for instance, when Johnson single-handedly tore apart one of the best defensive teams in history. But in the aggregate, its failures have been far greater than its successes, and it’s notable that the most similar offensive team has faced similar troubles.

Is there something about iso-heavy offenses that makes them vulnerable in the playoffs? We can’t say it with certainty yet, but the case is building rapidly. The Hawks have three games left to show that Iso-Joe can be as effective in May as it is between November and April.

– In Game 1, the Hawks ran two isolation plays in the first quarter, one for Bibby (miss) and one for J.J. (a make, but it came just after a steal and Orlando’s defense hadn’t yet set). They ran four isos in that awful second quarter: Marvin (miss), Zaza (miss), J.J. (miss) and Jamal (miss). Of those six plays, all but two were long, challenged jump shots: Marvin got his layup blocked by Dwight Howard and Jamal missed on a runner near the end of the half.

– I covered Stan Van Gundy so this doesn’t surprise me. The guy is fanatical about not letting his team slip. And the Magic are aware of what happened against ‘Nique’s Celtics in ‘95. Still, I keep wondering what lesson there is to learn from a series they ended up winning, anyway.

– Slam Online ranks the Euroleague players and puts Childress at No. 5.

When you look at JJ’s hotspot data for the 2010 playoffs on nba.com ( http://nba.com/hotspots ) . . you’ll see where he’s struggling from shooting wise. He’s ice cold from 3 . . and he’s having problems getting the floater to drop.

But the so- called low percentage shot ( the 16 – 23 ft long midrange jumper ) seems to be falling for him at around a 50% FG clip. That’s why I say that he just needs to get his shots up. It’ll be nice to see him get hot from three tonight though. If he’s open, I want him shooting that ball.

JJ the faciliator in this series is not going to work, if other people aren’t making shots. Play with a chip on your shoulder tonight man. Shut these people up about you and this team in general.

As I have told so many people, Joe Johnson is not enough to get it done. He doesn’t have what it takes to be a SUPERSTAR….Don’t get me wrong he is an ALL-STAR…but when it comes to taking over a game by himself…He can’t do it like a SUPERSTAR (Kobe, Dwayne Wade, and LeBron) would do. Personally, I would like to see the Hawks go after Dwayne Wade in Free Agency and perhaps make a trade for Amare Stoudemire or a legitimate Center ….Its time for ATL sports team to start PAYING to win a CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

This not brain surgery, definitely not to people who have been watching Hawks basketball for the last half decade. Yes JJ will fade at a pace that will far outweigh the contract the Hawks would have to give him. No iso-Joe will not work in the playoffs, against teams who a) have better defenses (which is why they’re in the playoffs), b) will play harder defense because it is the playoffs, and c) have pre-series and mid-series to make adjustments if necessary, not an off-day or two in the middle of the season. Not to mention that JJ, while great, is third team, not Kobe or Lebron or Wade or Carmelo.

This statement by John Hollinger

“The Hawks have three games left to show that Iso-Joe can be as effective in May as it is between November and April.”

Some people have suggested the Hawks keep doing what they do and make no changes because that is what they do. I say that’s asinine since the playoffs are all about making adjustments as needed to win. For example, if ISO-Joe isn’t working, then please go to a plan B and subsequently even more plans if needed.

hm, not a bad thought process at all. the more I look at it the more I like it. Bet you anything you never see that lineup while Woody is in charge. Mario is inactive tonight anyway.

JJ All NBA? Top 6 two guard in the league? OK. But maybe that says more about the state of the league than it does about JJ. Dude has looked unstoppable too many times to count, but he’s also looked pretty pedestrian on far too many occasions. The Hawks schizoid behavior can’t be traced directly JJ but he’s certainly a big part of it. Hawks fans need 12 more great games out of Joe. to have a chance at the NBA title Question is can we get that before we get 3 more bad ones.

If the Hawks want to win tonight they have to do two things: 1. Rebound the basketball, offensively and defensively. 2. Foul Dwight Howard. 60% FG, 50% FT.

MICHAEL CUNNINGHAM-very nice article, and the article by ESPN’s John Hollinger was simply outstanding and totally on point. If GM RSund is sincere about judging Woodson’s ability to coach and lead the Hawks in the playoffs, he should be gone after the team is eliminated. His OFF system, philosophy and coaching ability simply aren’t sufficient for a Hawk team with serious playoff aspirations and talent.

I still can’t fathom the criticism of JJ, while giving Bibby what amounts to a free pass. JJ has to cover for Bibby’s lack of speed, quickness, athleticism, consistency, inability to penetrate, defend PG’s, or anyone else for that matter, create for others, and beat on the ball pressure, which forces him to give the ball up above the 3pt line.

How do you justify having one of the NBA’s quickest, fastest and most athletic teams in the NBA, and end up ranking 2nd in slowest OFF?

Najeh Davenpoop

Whatever you may say about his playoff performance (and his current struggles are Woody’s fault more than they are his own), the All-NBA teams reward regular season performance. There is no question Joe deserved his spot, between the numbers he put up, the role he played on this team, and the success of this team. Props to him.

Interesting article by Hollinger… like all things Hollinger, I’m a little skeptical of the numbers-heavy approach, but it’s an interesting idea anyway. I’m not sure I follow the logic behind teams necessarily getting better at defending the iso the more they see it though… it seems to me that am offense that simplistic wouldn’t take a whole lot of adjustment time. I think if anything it has more to do with a) playoff defenses being better than average in general, and b) the intensity level rising, resulting in a higher percentage of shots getting contested.

The biggest problem I see with the Hawks is the lack of a true leader. Let’s be honest Joe Johnson is not a leader. He will never be a leader. He was given the title because of his veteran status. Maybe, Mike Bibby should step up but I’m not he has the ability either. A true leader on the floor could help pull them through letdowns and lapses that they have.

Now, Woody! He is not the coach for the Hawks. I know that since he has been there the wins have increased each year but I think that’s solely because of the raw talent of the players. He does not have the ability to make adjustments after losses. You can watch a Hawks game and see them make the exact same mistakes as before. Atlanta needs a coach who is a very strong defensive coach and one who will install an offense that keeps the ball moving around the court. Way too many ISO’s. I will be rooting hard for the Hawks tonight because in spite of everything I LOVE THEM!

The fact that Woodrow acts like we don’t play road games and home games are the only thing that matters says a lot about him as a leader. If he had his way the Hawks would play all games at home….. He said one adjustment tonight is to let Bibby guard Nelson, enough said. Listening to the comments Duck and Woodrow made shows that neither really believe the Hawks can win… If tonights game goes as I think it will, I will be getting my free agent wish list together. Probably have to be young cheap guys seeing how they don’t have much to spend…. Honestly I would rather the Hawks lose trying something different rather than lose doing the same ol same ol. Throw some different line ups out there. Cant get any worse than it did the other night… Move JJ to the sf, Crawford at the 2 and let Teague play the one…. At the least we get a pg who can put pressure on somebody and sets up his teammates for easy shots. Crawford can guard Barnes since he isn’t much of an offensive threat, and put JJ on Vince. He cant be any worse on him than Duck.

You guys still haven’t learned a thing about this team. When faced with the most adversity, this team has almost ALWAYS answered the challenge with a great defensive game. When people doubt this team the most, is when they rise up.

Don’t be surprised if the Hawks don’t have the lead in this game with under 5 minutes to go. And don’t be surprised if they play one of their top 5 defensive games of the year . . . or see a Hawk “supernova” by someone on offense.

That’s how this team has rolled the entire year.

I would be pleasantly shocked if JJ steps it up offensively tonight. His repertoire of running jumpers and hesitation-dribble layups just isn’t available against D-12. So unless he has one of those rare nights where he is deadeye out to 30 feet, I don’t see how he turns it on against the Magic. Not dissimilar from the issue that Gary Payton usually had when he played against LA in Shaq’s prime.

I haven’t forgotten that the Hawks were tied at 27 in the 2nd quarter yesterday, but I think they are playing a little smarter today than they did on Tuesday, at least on offense. They are definitely not playing as scared of Howard as they did in Game 1. Exploit the Josh-Lewis matchup, share the ball, drive inside, draw fouls, and don’t settle for jumpers. Josh sets up Marvin with a wide open rhythm jumper, which Marvin bricks. Now THERE’S where you can say the Hawks just “need to knock down shots”. In that case the scheme worked fine, but the execution wasn’t there from Marvin.

Najeh Davenpoop

The chances that Dwight continues hitting his hook shots and free throws is pretty unlikely. Down by 5, scoring points with some level of regularity, and the Magic shooters are not really in rhythm yet — I actually like the game plan and the energy so far. Hawks big guys just need to do a better job keeping their bodies between Howard and the hoop, refs need to call a fair game, and they need to continue sharing the ball and getting it to Smoove in the post.

sleepy

Big 3 by Crawford after Joe dribbled into heavy traffic out of the isolation. The fact that the Hawks are outrebounding Orlando just shows that they really came to play today. Now they just have to play smart. I’m telling you, drawing that 3rd foul on Howard now will completely change the game. He will sit the rest of this half, giving the Hawks a chance to extend this lead, and he will be playing somewhat timid coming out of halftime, giving the Hawks an opportunity to put the Magic on their heels even more. Come on Hawks. You are in a favorable position; take advantage.

Big Ray

I know I’m about 7 minutes of actual game play ahead, but I’m already thinking of how the Magic will try to counter what we’re doing (assuming we keep doing this and go into the half with a lead).

Will we continue to attack and move the ball (and players) around? Or will we lapse into a jump-shooting trance and start playing bad on both ends.

It will be critical to keep closing out on shooters (they really do NOT shoot well if we’re staying on top of them) and keep playing Howard tough, but one-on-one.

The telling stat for me in this game is the Hawks being 13/13 from the free throw line. That is fearlessness. No Hack-a-Dwight in the middle of the first quarter today. They are playing fearless and relentless trying to take it inside and get fouled, and it’s working. This is how the Hawks win games, not by standing around on the perimeter taking contested shots.

Question here…..3 plays ago……Orlando is given the ball to take it out behind their basket…….The player drops the ball against the back stop and it dribbles away, He then is given the ball again, I think by his own player…and takes it out.

Shouldn’t that be hawks ball under Magic basket?

Go Hawks!!.

Najeh Davenpoop

Woody needs to make sure the Hawks are not patting themselves on the back for this half. There’s a second half to be played, and as great as an 8-point halftime lead is, that takes 40 seconds to get erased against a Magic team firing on all cylinders. The Hawks have to come out with the same intensity after halftime and try to pick up foul #4 on Howard, who will no doubt be trying to avoid picking up that foul.

Like I said, that 3rd foul completely changed the game. If Howard is on the floor with 2 fouls the rest of that 2nd half, chances are the Magic create a big play or 2 and come back and tie it or take the lead; either way, chances are they would have the momentum. Right now all the momentum is on the Hawks’ side.

While I’ve been impressed by the Hawks tonight, but we have seen it before where they led Orlando in the half and wilted in the second. Hope they stick to what is working.

3 fouls each on Dwight and Gortat is huge, with really no major Hawks player in foul trouble.

Joe needs to play off the ball more, so he can hit wide open three’s like he got to end the half.

Love the lineup to end the half. I would stick with it to start the 2nd, and bring in Bibby later.

Can Hawks win this game after game 1’s monumental beatdown? Despite the horrendous calls by NBA refs?

Najeh Davenpoop

“Hawks took the lead with Bibby on the bench…..Hmmmmmm”

You’re not the only one to notice, dude. Without Bibby waving Nelson to the hoop like a damn 3rd base coach, a huge part of the Magic offense gets taken away. With no Howard to draw double teams and no Nelson penetrating at will, the Magic are just a jump shooting team like the Hawks on a bad day.

I’m all for bringing in a so-called “true center” who can come into the game off the bench and allow Horford to slide to the 4 to spark him offensively. As you point out, he is a much better offensive player at the 4. Someone like the Celtics’ Kendrick Perkins to come in and play 20 minutes off the bench at center would be ideal for this team. I’m just not willing to sacrifice either Horford or Smoove to make that happen — they are too talented and neither one is as good as they can be yet. I’m still a fan of those two starting at PF and C.

The Hawks are in pretty good shape right now. crawford is feeling it, Al was able to get a nice rest on the bench without the Hawks losing too much momentum. Marvin is playing better than usual, and, the Hawks are only down by 1. All they need to do is outscore the Magic by 2 in the final quarter to win this. Also, Ron Jeremy may end up playing Dwight the entire 4th quarter, which means Dwight may end up being too fatigued for those big dunks up and over defenders…

Isolation on every possession, and predictably, the Hawks haven’t got to the line and have missed shot after shot. 2/12 shooting, almost all off of isolation. I don’t get it. Despite a pretty well-coached game for 3 quarters, again, it’s his lack of a go-to-offensive play/scheme that kills our chances of winning.

The players don’t get off without blame.
Boneheaded mistakes + taking plays off, SMH.

You have to play 4 quarters without taking plays off. You have to play 4 quarters and minimize mistakes. The game is right there for the taking at the end of 3. You’d think these guys would come out with a focus we haven’t seen all season to try and pull this one out. They know they’ve struggled in 4th quarters, but they fall into the same trap they’ve fallen into in numerous 4th quarters all season – lack of ball movement/dribble dribble dribble.

My keys to this loss-

1) Josh’s pouting and total lack of defensive effort in the second half, coupled with his “I’m trying to make something happen” turnovers. His attitude put a real damper on the second half, right from the start. Disgusting.

2) Joe Johnson, bad on both ends (just who DID he defend?), and apparently getting worse from game to game. He ended up shooting 42% against Milwaukee, and is down in the mid 30s percentage wise against Orlando so far.

3) Our brilliant offensive game plan once again going away from Al Horford when the Magic have clearly not been able to stop him. I just love an offensive game plan that involves “let’s try and see if we can get Joe and Jamal to 20 points apiece tonight.”

4) Mike Bibby gave us nothing. Jamal Crawford came in for him and gave us some good shots before joining Joe off the deep end.

As tempting as it may be to blame Woody or Joe for this loss, I’m going to pass. For three quarters, the Hawks had the blueprint and the energy. The bottom fell out in the 4th, and that falls on the entire team, but you can’t blame poor preparation (Woody) or poor energy (the players). The Hawks are a poor road team, and when the Magic started making their run in crunch time they fell back into the bad habits that plagued them all year instead of rolling with what had been working all game long.

Maybe I’m an idiot, but I see a silver lining. The Hawks showed that they can scheme for this team, match their energy, and outscore them if they get the ball inside and stay away from isolation. I’m confident enough that they won’t melt down like they did here if they are playing in front of the home crowd.

Hawks need a true center(b9 Bye Woddyg) that can clogged the middle, rebound and make players driving to the lane to alter their shots. So Hofford can move to the PF slot and get a small forward that can score with a Basketball IQ. The next coach should be a teacher as well as a disciplinarian that will develop all the players. Use a second unit that can jell. If Josh Smith has to be trade…..so be it. Good riddance Woody will not be back. Fire Woodson!

Najeh ,

Great post, but I have to admit I feel more negative.

Our energy was good, but Josh Smith came out in the second half and sapped a lot of it by not providing what he did in the first half. That hurt us, hurt our defense, hurt our rebounding, even hurt our offense.

The fact that we did what we’ve done all year long does NOT make me want to give the coach a pass. Making the same mistake consistently over the course of 82 games means you’ve had that many opportunities to learn from it. To continue making those mistakes in the playoffs does not make it any more okay, it actually makes it worse.

I’d like to see us pull what Milwaukee did on us. We’ll know how much of a chance we have at that in this next game. Lose the next one (and I don’t care if it’s in triple overtime) and this show is all but officially over.

If I’m the Hawks, I would strongly consider starting Evans or Teague in the backcourt in Bibby’s place to start next game, and let Crawford come off the bench and play a majority of those minutes. Bibby was flat-out awful in this game again as he’s been all postseason, and he pretty much single-handedly let the Magic back into the game starting the 2nd half. Let me clarify — I’m not saying making those mistakes is OK. I’m just attributing the mistakes to being on the road, not to coaching or effort. What I was trying to say is that if this exact same game is played in Philips Arena, I don’t think the Hawks get away from what worked all game and melt down in the 4th quarter.

There’s still no excuse for their poor road play, and that goes to a broader criticism of Woody and this team’s lack of leadership. But I think if this loss is attributable to being on the road as opposed to preparation and coaching, like I think it is, it’s a much more positive outlook for the Hawks going forward in this series.

Melvin,

I think fatigue has to be a factor. JJ and Josh played 43 minutes, while Mo played 7, and ZaZa 6. But mentally, the Hawks always find a way to struggle offensively and defensively in the fourth.

Hawks need a backup PG. On the 790 the zone interview, Horford said they need Bibby to help them get into their sets.

But when Bibby is playing like crap, we just cant leave him on the court. So we end up initiating the offense through JJ and Crawford, which contributes to the ISOs that we see in the fourth when the game gets tight. They ar SGs for a reason.

But JJ gave us nothing again (offensively or defensively). Thats 5 bad games in a row for our max contract wanna be elite JJ. I cant help but wonder if something is wrong with him (fatigue or his wrist/thumb).

And Josh did not have his head in the game.

Good game for Horford though. Unfortunately his 5th foul forced him out in the fourth quarter. And Marvin tried, but he is just not skilled enough.

Hawks looked good for 3 quarters, but once again, they go away from whats working, and score less than 19 points in the fourth. Along with bad defense.

I agree, Josh Smith can be a beast on defense and make some highlight plays, but when things are going bad he looks like a selfish 6 yr old. This is his 6th yr in the league and his basketball IQ is still heavily lacking. He still has no goto move and whines way too much.

I don’t think it has anything to do with selfishness.

I think there’s a lack of direction.

You don’t make the same mistake and have the same issues scoring the ball doing what you do if you’re being properly directed.

And, if selfishness was the issue, you would’ve liked to see plays drawn up out of timeouts to get the ball moving and to get guys looks off a pass rather than off the dribble.

The truth is, this team is what it is. They do what they’ve been doing all along. They’ve got the talent to compete with any team in the NBA. But, they lack the direction that’s needed through crucial points in a playoff game to come up with big W’s, especially on the road. They’ve struggled getting buckets all season in the 4th, but you see the same issues plague this team.

We’ve seen throughout the regular season, and we’re still seeing it. It’s obvious he still hasn’t figured it out…

Joe does the same thing he always does in big games the last half of this yr. He shrinks from the moment. He cant make a decision. he dribbles and dribbles rather than using his advantage as soon as he comes off the pick or around the screen. IM sick to death of him and his same old tired act. And Josh just doesnt get it. How many times have commentators, former players, current playres, hell everybody said give the ball up on the fast break but what does he do. How many times do we see him whinning about a no call on one end while his man is streaking toward the other backet. Of course, let woody go, but let JJ go with him. Save the money, and trade Josh for a true 5 and build on Al, a true center, Jamal, and Teague

I don’t readily see a trade involving Josh Smith or Al Horford. But if one of them has to happen, I say trade Josh, and I’m a fan of his. But Al Horfords don’t come along all that often, and this guy still has upside, despite what many thought when he came in the league, and what many still think. He has all the intangibles, but doesn’t lack in athletic ability or anywhere else.

BUT…..

If you do that, Horford has to play PF. Unless you’re getting an Amare Stoudamire, Carlos Boozer, or some other PF type that won’t play center better than he can.

But that’s another story for another day, and I also don’t know that it’s a likely scenario. I’d say it’s not….

Sure. Let’s fire the players and give the coach an extension. Then we can all pay to go see the Atlanta Woodys.

If guys like Josh and Al are doing the same thing every time for the last six years, then somebody needs to cut the coach and the GM loose. Players are that hard-headed, you trade them. If the coach is that ineffective, then you get a different one. Woody allows too much freedom. And the players make the same mistakes because they simply aren’t disciplined and enforced. Don’t know what to tell ya, other than a coach always takes a fall for that, no matter how you see it. Only high-powered, proven, tenured coaches escape that fate (Popovich, Jackson, Sloan). Period.

south ga boy,

It is about direction, or lack there of.

“The whole league knows how to defend Iso Joe”

That’s exactly why it would help if *coach* would draw something up, or have an offensive system in place to help minimize these lulls.

I understand what you’re saying though. I get that players have to keep their composure and come to play hard every play. I said in an earlier post that players hold some blame in tonights loss as well. But, if you look at the bigger picture, it’s the lack of direction.

Ultimately, we’re not going to lose this series because J.Smith whined after a call. It comes down to what you’ve been taught. And, even after witnessing 4th quarter collapses throughout the regular season, we obviously haven’t installed a set of plays that we can go to in the 4th quarter should we stagnate. People comment about how selfish these guys are, but truthfully, when you have a system in place that allows players to go one on one exclusively in throughout the game, it points to a lack of direction from *coach*.

If *coach* knew that the lack of ball movement kills our offensive attack in the fourth quarter, he would’ve implemented something by now. The fact that we see them continue to do it, and the problem has yet to be addressed, points to what I’m getting at.

For those of you who want to trade Smoove for his occasional bonehead play, let me point you to something I saw recently that Amare Stoudemire said. When asked about how come he has improved so much on defense, he simply said that nobody up to this point had ever taught him how to play defense before.

Now maybe he’s right, maybe he’s making excuses, I don’t know. The reason I bring it up is that in the case of a super-talented player like Smoove, getting him to fix these boneheaded mistakes (which have been on the decline over the last couple of years anyway) can be as simple as finding a good coach, or even a good veteran leader that can work with him on those things.

Anyway, I think it’s foolish to trade someone as talented as Smoove who affects the game in so many ways positively because he does dumb sh-t every once in a while. Maybe if the Hawks had a point guard, other players wouldn’t feel so compelled to try to make things happen on their own.

He finished the series against Milwaukee with regular season type stats. But he also finished shooting 42% against them. He’s shooting somewhere around 34% against Orlando.

Of course, Jamal Crawford is doing even worse, shooting 35% or so for the playoffs overall. I’d make as much noise about it, but after hearing so much about how great JJ is and how we just GOTTA sign him to a gajillion-billion-trillion dollar contract, I’m just not quite as disappointed in one as I am the other, despite the fact that I feel both have let me down big time.

Clearly poor execution in the 4th killed the HAWKS. They missed several shots they can make, but they were still contested shots. Orlando on the other hand executed very well and got several easy shots to put the HAWKS away. Horford hitting the outside shot really made a difference in what Howard could do in the paint. If Howard goes back to his normal free-throw percentage and one of those calls against Collins goes the other way, I think we really come close if not win this game. It seems like Orlando made a lot of 3’s but they were only 9-23. (not a bad percentage, but definitely not great)

JJ still isn’t shooting well but Orlando is really making an effort to over play his jumper and make him drive to Howard. The HAWKS have to keep running the pick and pop with Horford to keep Howard away from the basket. The HAWKS actually out rebounded Orlando tonight, especially on the offensive glass. If Horford hits his shots we can continue to exploit the boards.

To me, this roster doesn’t really need significant change beyond bringing in a Kendrick Perkins-like player, preferably an experienced veteran, to play 20 minutes a game at center and allow Horford to slide over to PF for a while. What this team needs is a coaching change and to turn the point guard reins over to Teague. It’s not like the Hawks have been getting beat in these playoffs because of size or talent deficiency, the way the Utah Jazz have against the Lakers. They have been getting beat because of mental mistakes and lack of mental toughness, which speaks to poor coaching and a lack of veteran leadership. I don’t deny that he helped kill the Hawks with his turnovers tonight, but I think he has a lot more games where his impact is a big net positive than a big net negative.

Also, if you want to trade him, which center do you trade him for that makes the Hawks better? Keep in mind that for all his faults, you are talking about trading a guy who is second-team All Defense, the most willing passer on this team, arguably the league’s best help defender, and the only triple-double threat the Hawks have. Which center out there is available that will impact the Hawks the way he does?

If there is a player who will have the positive impact he does at the center position, then I am for it. I just don’t see that guy being available.

As for Josh, he doesn’t often kill us in games like this. When’s the last time he had 5 turnovers in a game, much less in a half?

It’s just that when he does play bad…it’s pretty bad, and it’s very frustrating to watch.

Najeh ,

For me, it’s about if forced to choose. I’m all for getting a better coach in here, first. All for it. And I have to think that this entered Rick Sund’s mind when Memphis offered Josh $58 million. If forced to choose, you already know now what you’ll get out of Horford from night to night, regardless of whether or not you change the coach. Can you count on Josh to play smarter even if you don’t get a different coach? Again, I don’t want to be rid of the guy, I like him a lot. But if that hard, tough situation ever comes up….do you stick with the electric PF who fills the stat sheet but can play you right out of a game, or do you stick with the PF who can also man the pivot for you night after night, if you need him to?

Tough….but I know which way I’d go. It’s just hypothetical, though. For now. I think. ;)

Nah, I agree with you on Josh playing the 3. That’s a terrible idea. I’m saying keep Josh and Al starting, reduce their minutes, and play your Perkins-type player off the bench at center allowing Horford to slide to the 4. The split would end up being similar to how the Hawks’ backcourt works now, with Joe, Jamal, and Bibby splitting pretty much all of the available minutes at the PG and SG positions. Josh, Al, and this Perkins-type player would split pretty much all the available minutes at the PF and C positions, and the coach would be able to mix and match these three players at those two positions based on matchups and whoever has the hot hand. Zaza would then become the 4th big man, getting spot minutes like Joe Smith does now, and everyone behind him on the depth chart would pretty much be irrelevant.

I don’t attribute ALL of Josh’s mental lapses to this, but I think they get cut down significantly with better coaching, yeah.

But Najeh, I see 2 prominent problems with that. 1. You would reduce Johs’s minutes and to be effective the “perkins type player” needs to be in at the begining of the game and at the end when we need a true 5 to go up against the Howards, NeNe’s, Bogut’s, Bosh’s, Shaq’s, etc,etc of the game. We dont need Perkins to go against their back-up 5, thats what we have the 3 slugs on our bench now to do. 2nd, there is no way our cheap ars ownership group could eer afford to pay for that type of player or Josh either to come off the bench and give JJ the max money he wants. We have retards for owners, so I just dont think your scenario is possible.

I’m thinking trade value. Josh’s value will never be any higher.
I’m not saying trade him for a [5] either.
Put together a package, with Josh as the centerpiece, That could
possibly bring in an Elite/Alpha Dog type player.

But I actually like Josh and he plays harder than most of our Hawks!

And Najeh, we cant get a “perkins” without giving up something significant and what do we have as trade bait other than Al or Josh. Nobody wants Marvin and his dumbass contract. We couldnt get a used Jock strap for Zsa Zsa or Bibby with their play and contracts. We either keep Joe with a big contract or he walks. We want to keep Jamal. So what pieces do we have that anyone else would be willing to give up a good 5 for except Josh or Al. I will concede that Josh is more talented but Al has maturity, a ture power forward talent and body, and he wont make dumb mistakes. So Josh is the only thing we have that we can trade to get a 5. You can forget free agency with this bunch.

Extremely impressed with Al Horford’s showing in the playoffs. Over the next several years it seems the only chance of getting out of what’s rapidly becoming one of the toughest divisions in the league is to build this team around Horford @ 4. With Charlotte taking leaps, Miami on the cusp of reloading, and Superman & company in Orlando, we’re dead in the water if Sund essentially sits on his hands this summer. Horford has the temperment, the budding skills, and the leadership qualities to be the cornerstone of the franchise for the next 10 years; no one else on our side even comes close. There’s been so much talk about how important it is to ‘maintain the core’ of the Hawks. Seems there’s only ONE core, and he’s Horford.

Granddad, I agree that we have to think outside the box and Josh is the big piece that we have to trade, and i think your right that his trade value will never be any higher. We cant keep trying to drive this square (drafting a bunch of forwards, f… you very much Billy Knight) peg into a round hole. To continue to do so is insanity. Our front line, as constituted, do not have the heith to compete on a nightly basis with the elite teams in this league. something has to give and its either Al or Josh.

Easy venomspitter, not everybody else. Gotta keep Jamal wither to start or come off the bench. Don’t know where we would be without him this yr. I really think that Teague has the skills to, at least, check the quick guards on the top teams in the Eastern conference. Everyone else is up for possible trade as far as Im concerned, but the honest truth is that nobody else will give up anything of any value for any of our players except Josh.

Not necessarily. The key is there are not that many players like Howard in the league that the Hawks really need a true center to defend. Among the players you mentioned, Nene is not really an offensive centerpiece who needs a big time defender guarding him, and Bosh is a finesse forward who got manhandled by Horford every time they matched up this year. The Magic, Cavs, Bucks, and Lakers of course all require a lot of defensive attention for their centers, but how many teams have true centers of their caliber? Not many. In most games, Josh and Al will still be finishing the game on the floor in crunch time.

“And Najeh, we cant get a “perkins” without giving up something significant and what do we have as trade bait other than Al or Josh. ”

Again, not necessarily true. The true center the Hawks acquire doesn’t have to be a star. I mean, sh-t, the real Perkins ain’t no star, he’s just a perfect role player. Teams pick up key acquisitions like this with mid-level exceptions, by trading expiring contracts and future picks, and/or using non-lottery draft picks all the time. The real Perkins was the #28 pick in the draft. The Bucks got Kurt Thomas as a salary cap throw-in. The Pistons in 2004 got Rasheed Wallace in exchange for a first round pick (used on Smoove) and expiring contracts. The Mavs this year traded for Brendan Haywood and Caron Butler while giving up an out-of-favor Josh Howard and expiring contracts.

The point is, these kind of players can be had at reasonable prices without having to give up Josh or Al. It just takes a creative GM to find them.

“there is no way our cheap ars ownership group could eer afford to pay for that type of player or Josh either to come off the bench and give JJ the max money he wants. We have retards for owners, so I just dont think your scenario is possible.”

This is the big wild card, whether the ownership puts their money where Michael Gearon’s mouth is. For example, Brendan Haywood is a free agent and can probably be signed with a mid-level exception, but will the DASG do what it takes to bring him here? He would be ideal for the role I’m talking about.

WEll of course O’brien, but the question is why and who ? The “who” is usually JJ with Josh a close second. The “why” is because they lack the mental discipline to pass the ball or drive the lane and shoot/kick. Mostly, what they do is hold the ball (josh) or dribble, dribble, dribble and wait for the double team to come over with 4 sec left on shot clock and have to throw up a prayer. I agree 100% with Jamal and you but why does it happen over and over in the big games against elite teams when we need them to move the ball or drive to score or draw the foul or kick it out to the open man. Why is that so hard to execute or at least attempt to execute. Those 2 have the most talent on the team and the least mental discipline. To put it into football terms, they can score TD’s almost at will but they will consistantly get called back on stupid penalties

Did you know that against the Spurs in the these playoffs, Haywood only averaged 6 and 6 in 23 mpg. His career average is 8 and 6. If he is willing to take a short term contract, then he would be worth looking into.

But at 30 years old, this might be his last big contract, so he may want something long term.

Najeh, nobody on this blog repects your NBA IQ more than me, and Im sincere when I say that, but I truly think that, even if ASG thru Sund could pull off the mid-level exception for your type of player, I still feel like its putting neosporin on skin cancer. And you have to admit, when you say “magic, cavs, bucks, and Lakers require a lot of defensive attention” is the core of my point. We can keep going down the road we are on with our current roster configuration with possible upgrades here or there, and still win 50+ games every yr and continue to get bounced out of the playoff’s in round 2 yr after yr. We can do that, but getting to the level of the Lakers, Cav’s, and most importantly the Magic is going to take a large re-make of the team, not patchwork. Josh has had 6 yrs and I cant see in him the Kobe like or Lebron like mental toughness to win a championship. I cant see JJ raising the level of his game to be the max-contract leader a team needs to take them to the promise land. Its just not in his personality, and his game has gone downhill from the Celtic series 2 yrs ago. That was JJ’s highwater mark, and “why,” its because he’s trying to be someone he’s not. Billy knight screwed this team several yrs ago with his drafting. There is a saying “the outcome of the battle is determined by the layout of the land.” We have too many forwards. We have no true starting center, and we dont know whether we have a true point guard in Teague, but we definately know we dont have one in Bibby. I just dont think you can tweak the roster and overcome all that “ROSTER ADVERSITY”

Darrell put the acid down. The Nets would never trade a top flight point guard and one of the 2 or 3 best young true centers in the league for Josh and whoever. secondly, your assuming they would get the no. 1 overall to get Wall, and of course there will only be, I think, about a 30% chance that they get the no 1, even with the worst record in the league. Your forgetting those damnable ping pong balls and David Stern cant pick out the frozen card last at the bottom of the bowl like he used to be able to do. Can you say Patrick Ewing.

south ga boy, you may be right that no amount of additional pieces can be added to this core to have them competing at the level of the Cavs, Lakers, and Magic, and I can’t fault your logic in coming to that conclusion. But while upgrading the role players around the current core may or may not ever lift this team to championship-level, I am almost certain that upgrading the coach will lift this team significantly past their current level. I’d just prefer to make that change and see how far they go before breaking up the core of players. If nothing else, it’s a hell of a lot harder to dismantle and reassemble your roster and come out on top than it is to upgrade the coach.

Josh + B-ball IQ is fine.
Self discipline can be trained. If and only “if” he wants to change
and, this is important, he recognizes the need to change.
He seems like a good kid.
An astute Coach could help him see that, as opposed to…all that;
lets call it, “tough love” [yelling/bullying].
He loses concentration very easy. So easy he forgets the game
continues as he pitches a fit. (tough love = sit on the bench)
Now are you ready to play or do you want to continue your bickering?
The Coach, a real Coach, should recognize that and get him off the floor when he loses concentration.Officials easily take him out of the game [mentally & emotionally].
You know the other team is baiting him.
[DH] knows him better than anyone.
Josh will be fine with the new guy & if there’s not a new guy?

Well, You may be right, and Im cerainly in favor of a new coach. Im not a Woody hater like some on this blog. I appreciate the fact that he was given nothing to work with 6 yrs ago except some lottery picks, a terrible judge of talent in a GM with a bonehead mnodel on how to make an elite team, and the most dysfunctional, hoopty (and Im a white dude)., cheap, lawsuit driven, sorry excuse for “so called” owners pro sports has ever known. And the team did improve every yr, so rather than tell Woody goodbye and give him a loaded gun and a “how to” suicide book on the way out the door like some Hawks fans would do, I say tell Woody goodbye and at least thank him for taking a team from 13 wins to 50+ with very limited resources. Get a new coach and maybe try your idea for another yr, but i dont have much confidence that it will even get us to a conference finals muych less a champoinship. And What if Bosh, or God forbid Lebron, went to the Heat to play with D-Wade. Hell, we couldnt get past 3rd place in our own division. I want a championship, as I know you and everyone else does too, and Im afraid we need to move Josh for a true 5. Im willing to take a risk, not blow the team up but more than a bandaid, because its going to take risks in this division with the free agents out there and the no state tax in Fla if we want to be able to compete with the Magic. We cant do it the way we are now.

Granddad, I wish I believed you were right about Josh but I just dont think so. I do believe Josh is a good guy. Helping the family of the young man that was tragically died here in Atl is a sign that he has a good heart. But, when it comes to basketball his emotion rules over his intellect time and time again, and I dont think John Wooden, Lenny Wilkens, or Red Augherback could get him to play under control and think before he acts. And we cant keep saying “oh he’s young” anymore. He’s had 6 yrs in the league, he’s 24, and has a lot of NBA games under his belt now. We love his talent and his ability to make us come up out of our chair with a “holy sh%t did you see what Smoove just did” moments. BUt, we cant keep ignoring his lack of desire on defense “all” the time, or the stupid pass, or shooting when he could have drove to the hoop and gotten a better shot or at least a foul, or the constant complaining to the ref’s when he should be getting back on defense. I just cant keep making excuses or overlooking all his faults anymore. Its a hard truth, because he’s my fav player, but the team wont get any better until they move him in a trade for a real center and move Al to the 4. Im convinced of it.

Is it
Marcus Camby / Brad Miller / Ben Wallace / Andrew Bynum, / Mehmet Okur / Chris Kaman /
Nenad Krstic / Tyson Chandler / Samuel Dalembert / Kwame Brown / Jeff Foster / Brendan Haywood /
Erick Dampier / Rasho Nesterovic / Andris Biedrins / Shaquille O’Neal / Al Jefferson
or pick one from the 103 players who played the center position in the NBA this season
