Some of my blog people are not in the mood to praise the Hawks even after that Game 6 triumph. I understand.
You think the Hawks shouldn’t have this much trouble with the Bogut-less Bucks. You remember the Game 3 surrender and the Game 5 collapse. You think Woody should have made defensive adjustments earlier in the series. And if the Hawks win today, some of you probably don’t want to hear about their resilience, their character, how they responded with their backs against the wall and all the other things they tend to say in these situations.
Well, like “they” say (and like I vowed I never would), it is what it is. The Hawks can win the series today.
“Every team goes through adversity at times,” Al said. “It’s all about how you handle it. Now we have a chance to make it right and win a series.”
I’ve heard rumblings that the Hawks lose in the long-term by winning today but I’ve got to think your fanhood instincts overwhelm your sourness and you cheer the Hawks on to a W. Shoot, you might even begin to believe they can take on the Magic, despite your misgivings and general grumpiness.
I would understand that, too.
– J.J. on the improved communication in Game 6 after things got snippy at times in Game 5: “It was a lot better. But we are always going to have arguing. That’s is because we are a family, we are brothers. We ain’t always going to get along. Everything ain’t going to be peaches and cream. We are going to get in each other’s face every now and then but that is just the way it is. At the end of the day we got love for each other, got each other’s back and each others’ best interest.”
– After Game 6 some in the Hawks locker room sarcastically asked if Jerry Stackhouse can sing the National Anthem today like he did on Friday. So it was pretty funny when I saw this line in Michael Hunt’s column about the pressure on the Bucks for Game 7: “Just think about how much poise it took for Stackhouse to sing the national anthem before Game 6 in that setting.”
Indeed.
– Have fun, Hawks fans,
MC

I’m vexed that were playing a game 7, however; there’s no way in Hell I’m going to miss this game!!!!
Me and my minnie me will be sitting in section 111 row L. Just like MC stated, I feel some kind of way about these Hawks, but there’s no way I could miss a game 7. I was at the first playoff series against Boston, and the seen was electric. That’s a feeling I will never forget; I have a feeling today’s game is going to be off the chain.
Me and my son will do our part.

I don’t think there’s any long term good that comes out of losing, unless you are tanking to get the #1 overall pick. If the Hawks squeak by today and get killed in Round 2, it will be up to Michael Gearon to realize that does not constitute progress from last year and act accordingly on Woody. If the Hawks take the Magic to seven games or upset them, I think it’s fair to say Woody would have redeemed himself for this lackluster Bucks series at that point.
Of course, as schizophrenic as our beloved team is, I’m not even taking today’s game for granted. All I know is it’s a sellout and we the fans are going to tear the roof off that motherf-ucker.

Wow, we are all excited about a game 7…against the Bucks???? I think relieved is a better way to put it. The reality is this, the Hawks are the better team, but are so poorly prepared that they win mostly on talent and determination ( or should I say sometimes determination).
Woody, while having been semi-decent at getting the team to this point, lacks “that next step” that coaches must have in order to maximize this teams talent. The fact that it took an elimination game to make an adjustment is just astonishing. We have all beaten this dead horse, but basketball (like any other professional sport) requires constant adjustments/changes in order to progress “to the next level”. They may win tonight, but if you look closely many of their opponents echo the same sentiments, Hawks are very easy to figure out. Win today, and the Magic will make short work of these Hawks…maybe even sweep.

[Interesting article from the 'Boston Globe']
Uncertainty trails Hawks
Today’s Game 7 between the Hawks and Bucks could be the most critical game for Atlanta in several years. And a loss could cost coach Mike Woodson his job.
The Hawks were badly exposed in Game 5 for their lack of half-court offense, and they have yet to win difficult road games in Woodson’s tenure. His contract expires at season’s end, and Hawks general manager Rick Sund told the Globe in January that the two sides would wait until the end of the season to discuss an extension.
Sund joined the Hawks in 2008 and did not hire Woodson, which is never a good sign for a coach on the hot seat. Woodson clashed with former general manager Billy Knight, who wanted to fire the coach but was then fired himself by the team’s ownership group.
The ownership group then hired Sund, who has a history of running teams on limited budgets, and signed forward Josh Smith to a manageable five-year contract.
The Hawks likely won’t bring in a high-priced coach such as Avery Johnson even though they appear to be on the cusp of being an elite team. So Woodson may return with a slight raise and a short-term contract or could be replaced by a coach who could harness the Hawks’ talent into a more consistent winner.
The consensus across the league is that Atlanta may have the deepest talent pool, but it lacks a bona fide center and Woodson’s rather simplistic offense only works when the Hawks run.

So, dissenters – How CAN you break that up? That’s a TEAM over there – Coach included!

Hawks are balling as a TEAM! JJ doesn’t have to do it ALL anymore – qualified HELP has arrived! For that reason alone – Mr. Johnsdon will resign & will demand an extension for Mr. Woodson, in that process.
Some All-Stars & Super-Stars can’t play for just any coach. eg. (ESPN broke the news last Thursday @ 6pm).
Jeanie Buss, “phil Jackson WILL coach somewhere next year – There will be a lot of great jobs that will open up next year!”. I guess THE BLACK MAMBA” is at it again! That dude is UN-COACHABLE! Kobe is a complete Azz on and off the court. His teammates & coches find him intolerable! He’s probably pissed that King James is MVP two years in a row! What a sucker! Go Figure!

We need to do a better job on the defensive glass and a better job of overall collapsing on jennings and forcing the kickout as no one else on the team has been able to really make a basket .
Ersan Ilyasova came off the bench and basically who kept them in it on those little lay ins around the basket .
9 pts 5 boards off the bench for that guy
Bucks only 1 three pointer so far
shooting 38% from the field as a team
Keys to the second half
Offensively – lets just keep driving to the basket make good decisions with the basketball and force them to foul us.
defensively – lets tie up the details like the defensive glass and its almost time to break out the trap for both Jennings and Salmons . I would do it at the start of the 3rd and you know they will come out and try and bounce back . So Woody needs to throw something at him to keep the struggling while also getting the ball out of Jennings hands .
I love how everyone talking about Jennings handles . You are not juking anyone simply because you use your right hand especially when you never use your right hand so everyone is trying to force you to go right.
ABC is horrible

Everyone here knows the Bucks don’t give up. This game isn’t over. The article in the Boston Globe sums up my feelings, but why do we have to look to Boston to get a comprehensive feel for our own team?
Don’t kid yourself…if the Hawks screw up, Joe’s gone. He can’t take this dysfunctionality anymore than we can.
However, MaryB is right on one point. ADTHE.net is a great way to watch when you’re holed up in BFE. (You figure this one out yourself).
Plus, for whatever reason, Friday’s third quarter defense worked. That’s what we need!
This game….not over….Hawks could lose..”Watch what happens.”

We’ve just witnessed a perfect example of how our OFF has masked the problems caused by Woodson forcing the Hawks to play his beloved Switching DEF. When we’re hitting our jumpers and our overall OFF is clicking, it looks like the switching DEF is working. But when we stop hitting our jumpers and can’t score consistently, we see the other team erase a good portion of our lead,m because switching everything won’t allow us to consistently stop anyone.
If Woodson remains in his current state of stubborn stupidity and insists on switching everything, we’re going to lose this gm if we can’t continue hitting our outside shots. If Woodson doesn’t have the team come out after the half and play the straightup DEF we played last gm, he’s not going to make any OFF/DEF changes or adjustments down the stretch.

You do NOT have to score to effect the GAME! JJ is drawing dble-trple teams on the perimeter for the Love of God! He’s playing D & rebounding, (the little things that Super-Stars do to HELP their team win!
& for the idiots that tell Josh NOT to shoot jumpers & dribble? WTF? He’s an All-Star basketball player in the NBA! That’s what he do! Look at his stat sheet for assists!
Which brings me to the next question: what EXACTLY is it that YOU DO? For a living.

You folks may not care for Jon Barry too much, but he’s EXACTLY right about the Hawks. Horford is on a roll inside, the Bucks can’t stop him. How do the Hawks start the 3rd period? The coach does NOT go away from what’s working! The PLAYERS do! The last time I checked, Mr. Woodson was wearing one of them – Steve Harvey Suits! He does not run plays anymoren he draws them up!
This is NOT X-Box 360 where you control the game with a JOY-STICK! That’s why they call it a Joy-Stick! When you have one? You’re in complete control of the game! LOL!
Remember, the other team has a Game- Plan too! & its designed to stop yours! When a play breaks down, you have 24 seconds (can you count that high?) 24 seconds to improvise & pull off the best play possible!

Reflective of a coach without a sound system and no apparent philosophy,
one who has built this team without a solid foundation, therfore lending
itself to vast spectrum of performance.

Woody says now he’ll try to come up with a game plan against Orlando…hasn’t had time because of Milwaukee……I hope at least one person has been assigned to scout Orlando fulltime and has already come up with a game plan. Woody gets credit for recovering here….and Hawks defense worked!
My take….Hawks had to extend themselves in playing a team that was doing its best and would have clawed its way to victory any way possible. I think, the Hawks may be tired and they may have a jaded attitude, but if they keep playing like they have,,,,
They’ll face Cleveland (or Boston!) in the finals.

Well, the most important thing is we won, and advance to the second round. Good job guys.
Orlando is a much better team than Milwaukee, but given the Jekyl and Hyde nature of these Hawks, it would not surprise me to see them look good against Orlando.
I hope Woody and his team looked at the Magic-Bobcats series, because Dwight was in foul trouble almost every game.
Also, if I’m Woody, I would go on the offensive like Phil does. Tomorrow, when meeting with the media and they ask about playing the Magic, I would comment on how the refs are doing a good job of minimizing the contact underneath the basket, and making the foul calls.

So, let’s move on people & show some respect for each other! Put the personal crap & agendas aside & Just enjoy these young Hawks! They are STILL learning how to WIN!
We probably won’t WIN it ALL – this year! But, WHY NOT US? WHY NOT BELIEVE?
Look at Dallas. They were the #2 seed out West & enjoyed a 13 Game Winning streak with our Jet-Terry (whom we traded for their #10th pick = Acie Law). They won on that deal! But, they were at home today watching the Hawks play another game! I am sure Rick Carlisle would LOVE to be in Mr. Woodons shoes – Game Planning for another play-off series!
Let’s move on & enjoy the extended series play!

The Hawks played well this game. Their series was awful though. It didn’t really matter, Orlando would have destroyed Milwaukee or Atlanta next round. I’d wish you good luck, but it’s a waste of breath and Woodson is possibly the worst coach in the playoffs… next to Carlisle.
Also, you guys don’t really want Avery Johnson. Regardless of how well he coaches, could you honestly tolerate listening to his voice all season? It’s bad enough when he’s a guest analyst.

Crawdaddy! Horford, we expected to stand up. Crawford came into the game with the Hawks down and sat down with us up 15. Second half, with JJ struggling, he takes a runout and dishes to JJ to let him finish. Unselfish play. End of game interview: “we’ve got work to do”. Not satisfied with this small success; ready to take us to the next level.
I’m expecting a much different series than the one last year. A war, if you will. They’ll be no taking Orlando for granted…we know how tough they are. If we play like we did today and Friday, itll go 7. If it does, win, lose or draw…I’ll eat my Fire Woody hat.

My dad was the the biggest Hawks fan I ever knew. He passed away on April 6th, but I know that he would have been proud of the way that the Hawks played tonight. My father had a saying that I’ve learned to trust, he used to tell me that it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish. From humble beginnings (13-69) in 2004/2005, the Hawks have gone on to become the third best team in the Eastern Conference and reach the EC semis for the second time in as many years. What gets lost is that this team has come a long way. They’ve exceeded every expectation of every expert coming into the season. I remember when ESPN had the Wizards fighting the Heat for the FOURTH seed in the east. The Atlanta Hawks for the 3rd seed wasn’t even in the equation, and yet… What I’m trying to say, and I beg you friends forgive me if I say it badly my mind doesn’t work very well anymore, is that it took ten years, millions of dollars, and a lot of pain and misery, but we’ve got a good team, and they won a great victory. Could the victory have come quicker? yes. Could the victory have been prettier? yes. Should this series have taken two weeks to finish? hell no. But it was a victory nonetheless, and we should be proud of the team that we have. I know I am.

With Game 7 looming, Horford stepping up for Hawks
Posted May 1 2010 6:09PM
ATLANTA — These are the moments Al Horford lives for.
Game 7 of a first round playoff series on your home floor. Everybody watching. Pressure on. Season on the line. All or nothing. Win and move on or lose and go fishing.
That’s Horford’s time, same ways it’s always been for the Hawks’ center and emerging leader. Just three years into his NBA career Horford is already an All-Star and the undeniable leader of his team.
If the Hawks are indeed going to finish what they started against the Milwaukee Bucks in Game 7 Sunday at Philips Arena, they’ll need a heavy dose of Horford’s game and leadership to move on.
“I think this is big moment for Al, not only in terms of his play but as a leadership opportunity for him,” Hawks coach Mike Woodson said. “Everybody I talk to that watches Al play, they love everything about him. They think he has those elite leadership qualities that just jump out at you as you watch him or watch him on tape. So it would be huge for him to step up and have a big time game on a big time stage.”
There is no bigger stage than Game 7, with a trip to the Eastern Conference semifinals against Orlando on the line.
Horford is well aware of what is at stake, having rallied his crew from a Game 5 meltdown on their home floor to a rousing Game 6 win on the road to stave off elimination and force this deciding game on their home floor.
“We had to dig down to get to this point,” Horford said of the way the Hawks snapped a three-game losing streak to get to this point. “I know a lot of people thought we were done. It didn’t look good. But we bounced back and showed what this team is all about. And that says more to me than anything. It was gut-check time and we showed up.”
It helps when your 24-year-old steadying force is leading the way. Horford had 15 points and 15 rebounds in the Hawks’ 83-69 Game 6 win. Even though the Hawks couldn’t hold on down the stretch in Game 5, Horford did finish his night with a playoff career-high 25 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks.
This series, after all, was supposed to be a showcase opportunity for Horford anyway. With Bucks center Andrew Bogut sitting out the postseason because of injury, Horford was expected to have his way with the Bucks inside.
Horford has been dominant at times, averaging 15.5 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks while shooting 54 percent from the floor and 77 percent from the free throw line. But he’s met stiff resistance from Bucks veteran big men Kurt Thomas and Dan Gadzuric. He’s been under constant fire from the crafty Thomas, who has done his best to get under Horford’s skin, turning their low-post jostling into near wrestling matches at some points.
Horford has managed to keep his cool through it all, while also serving as the Hawks’ emotional center during the crisis that was their three-game slide in this series.
“Pretty much every team meeting we’ve ever had Al has called it,” said Hawks forward Marvin Williams. “It goes back further than just this series, really. Three years ago during his rookie season when we played Boston, he was the one who brought in the inspirational video and put it on when we were down [2-0] in that series and clawed our way back to take them to seven games.”
Williams said Horford called a team meeting after a deflating road loss to Golden State Feb. 21, covering all the bases before the Hawks played at Utah the next night. They beat the Jazz on the road for the first time in 17 years.
“He is that vocal guy,” Williams continued. “Smoove [Josh Smith] is vocal, too. He gets after it sometimes. But Al is a leader in a different way. He’s the most vocal guy on this team. [Hawks captain and All-Star] Joe [Johnson] is more of a lead by example kind of guy. Al has always been our most vocal leader even though he’s younger and hasn’t been in the league as long as some of these other guys.”
Horford’s relative lack of experience is the only thing that has kept him from stepping up sooner. With Johnson and Mike Bibby established as captains, he’s had to navigate his way around a locker room that also includes seasoned veterans like Joe Smith and Jason Collins.
Woodson, however, isn’t concerned with age or any other mitigating factor where Horford is concerned. He knows that Horford has suppressed some of his natural leadership qualities in order to blend in better and be a good teammate.
But enough is enough.
“This is Al’s third year, he’s earned his keep and proven himself,” Woodson said. “He’s battle tested. Every step this team has taken, into the playoffs and everything else, we’ve done with Al Horford holding down the middle for us. So I don’t think there is any question that we need his leadership, on and off the floor.”

Now, as for the Milwaukee Bucks, I can’t say how impressed I was with the play of the Bucks. They were green at the point, old on the bench, and their best player was in a cast that went up past his elbow when this series started. Nevertheless, the took a team that was stronger, deeper, faster, and more experienced, and forced them into an elimination game on their own home court. The metal shown by that team is worthy of song. They don’t have anything to hang their heads about. For what it’s worth, I hope the Bucks draw somebody else next year.

Just got back from the game. Glad to see us close out those pesky Bucks.
- The defensive adjustments made by Woodson clearly stifled any shot the Bucks had in this series. We played 8 pretty solid quarters of basketball after making the adjustment after our game 5 loss at home.
- Joe Johnson goes 4-14 for 8 points. But we still cruised. Charles Barkley made an interesting point on 790 AM before the game about JJ’s contract situation. He feels as though if you’re going to pay any one guy 15+ million dollars, that one player better make you an instant contender. But, he doesn’t feel as if JJ is or ever will be that guy for us. I’ll let you guys toss that one around.
- After a slow start in the playoffs, Jamal seems to have gotten back to being Jamal. He followed up his big game 6 with another great performance today.
- I was sitting with one of my boys at the game, and he turns and tells me, “Look at Mike Bibby. He just stands there in the corner every time down the floor.” Although this was very much true to me, he still managed to make a meaningful impact in today’s games. I’ll take that over the night he goes MIA.
-Horford and J.Smith – got the job done. I won’t mention any numbers and what not, because the only thing you’ll hear about is how the Bucks are completely outmatched in the paint. We’ll just see what these two are made of come time to play the Magic.
- Marvin seems to come out into games with a lot of energy. But, as the game progresses, he fades into the background and seems content with doing all of the little things (entry passes, defense, rebounding).
- Brandon Jennings is special. He’s a hell of a player to watch. He shakes and bakes 24/7.
Can’t wait till Tuesday. Nobody’s giving us much of a chance. We’ll see how it plays out.

as i said on friday this was there first taste of adversity this year in essence as they cruised through a 53 game win season without injury thereby they were never really tested and the coach was able to put it on auto-pilot for the most part and sweop under the rug some games that might have been won on guile and changing what works when it wasnt instead of always preaching that it took more effort. sometimes when the strategy isnt there it doesnt matter how much effort there is, it isnt going to work when your flaws are being targeted. good for woody he finallly used some guile and good for these guys to stick together and win the big ones when it counted. they now get to play the former east champions healthy and test their mettle further. because of injuries their flop last year against the cavs was forgiven or they were given a pass and they took it. no passes this year.

1st things 1st – You must live in Clarksville.
I lived there for a # of yrs.
Lets go Peay!
Secondly – I [& C.Billups] were talking more about player movement.
*[during Iso]
If players that are not involved, whether it be [P & R] or simple
‘Iso Joe’ (Wdsn’s favorite), it is requisite for said players to
create movement [e.g., sreening away from ball, cutting, flashing, etc]
as to occupy defenders in order to take them out of help pos. & to eliminate traps & double teams.
I think C. Billups was speaking of player movement, whereas I added the ball movement when I posted:
“two fundamental concepts in basketball: [offensively]
*player movement [&]
*ball movement”
Not argueing, just statin’ my case.
By the way, I’ve still got kin folks & many many friends in Clarksville

Glad to see us cap this series off with a convincing win.
I don’t understand all the hateful squalling about Woodson. We know what he’s about by now, there are no surprises. That, and management has already stated that judgement comes largely from the playoff performance/result. Leave it be, because that performance opportunity is not yet over (fortunately).
I was glad to see 5 major things:
1) Al Horford beasting with a big double double.
2) Jamal Crawford in the groove again, and providing the offensive firepower we needed.
3) Mike Bibby making shots and scrapping for rebounds.
4) Woody’s defensive adjustments holding up for the 2nd game in a row, and the team really digging in hard defensively.
5)These guys SHARING THE BALL.

Congrats to Horf, Craw and Marvin! FIRE WOODY. Why? Because the Hawks should have won the Bucks series in 5 games or less, they should have won 58 games or more during the regular season, they should never or rarely have Horf and Smoove chasing quick guards on the perimeter, they should have developed Teague, they should have given (or forced) Marvin into a bigger role on the team, they should play Joe Smith, they should force Joe, Bibby and Crawford to pass the ball when they don’t have open shots, and on and on. And whose fault is all of this? // WOODY // therefore FIRE WOODY!!!

Any way, time to forget about the past and move on. Hint, that is what i am doing after this past weekend of golf. i really wanted to watch Hawks instead of play on Sunday, there now you have the reason.
Hawks seem to have gotten their 6th man back, just in time. Hawks defense seems to be alive and well. Brother Wooden will devise new plans for Orlando. I am extremely hopeful Hawks will steal one game from rusty Orlando team. Hawks will then make it to finals, where an injured LeBron can not stop them. This scenario is very realistic now. My brother Wooden will then be signed to a 5 year contract.

The Hawks really aren’t expected to reach the finals – it’s going to be very difficult to overcome the home court advantage that Orlando and Cleveland will have in a Hawks matchup.
Now, to answer your question, I’m just looking for a respectable showing against Orlando. Regardless of the coach, I really think the Hawks need to add some key pieces (like Cleveland and Orlando did) to make it to the next level.

tiger woo, not stupid in the least my friend. Those three came to play today and played with passion, intelligence and showed teamwork. Joe and Bibby pounded as always more than should be tolerated. And Smoove missed some assignments and made some mental mistakes. Woody has held back the Hawks for at least the last 2 years IMO and the org will be much better off when he leaves. Doing well (winning more games each year) does not accurately measure Woody’s impact or lack thereof. I think the team should have won more games each year if you or I had been coaching it. Assessing how well the players perform vs how well one thinks they should perform is more important when assessing the impact of a coach. In that assessment, Woody fails. Of course many say the coach cannot make the players perform. Well, the coach should put them in a position to take advantage of their strengths while covering their weaknesses. If they don’t do what he says, they should be benched even in favor of lesser players. If this had been done consistently, they would be doing what he wants by now. And if they ARE doing what he wants, (see Bucks games 3 – 5) he is an idiot. I hope Sund can do what is best for the Hawks but of course only time will tell.

R U Kidding me? You would rather have Noah than Home Court advantage? Well maybe you can have him – last I heard? He was at Home watching Horford play another game?
I’m reading between the lines here, so please correct me if I’m wrong? But, to get Noah? You would have had to take him with #2 pick! Have you heard his post game speeches & have you seen his attire for that professional press-conference? He needs a barber & besides, whay happened to the NBA dress code for pro athetes enacted by Stern 9 years ago?

Having said that, I would LOVE to have Noah here in Atlanta! But, how can we get him? I mean Chicago wouldbe nuts to let him leave! Who would we have to give up?
I would like to explore that? I would give our 1st round pick over the next 2 years + cash + our whole bench less Crawford. I would give Marvin too!
But, I never take Noah over Horford. Especially, if you’re talking that draft night pick over Horford at #2.

I LOVE that kid! He deserves MVP! I like that old-skool tie pin. He must have great grand parents to be wearing that thing!
The 2nd MOST votes for MVP ever behind SHAQ being #1 in HISTORY of the NBA! I guess the internet has made that huge difference when it comes to voting! I remember back in the day, we had to go to McDonald’s to vote!

beone,
All I am saying is I can’t understand how people can call for Woody’s firing after the team just advanced in the playoffs. I realize people don’t like his style and express those sentiments with a lot of emotion on here, but doesn’t the guy deserve a little credit – just a little?

I absolutely love Joakim Noah’s intangibles. Not to replace Al
[remember they were teammates @ 2 x Champions @ *the swamp school*]
but he would only enhance what we already have.
He has energy, passion, work ethic, a champion’s pedigree [father],
a don’t take no crap attitude [ask LbJ], runs like an *elk, infectious enthusiasm, Al speaks highly of him, grabs about 12 boards a game,
blocks about 2.5 per, teammates love him,…whats not to like?
*elk…couldn’t use *deer [for a simile] after disposing of them today.
Rodman is probably my all-time favorite player for alot of the same reasons. Then again Shane Battier is my favorite current non Hawk.
Yeah, I would prefer he had a haircut, much like I wish Dennis were not crazy. But then again I’m a big fan of Artest…maybe I’m a fan of crazy. Just so you know / Al’s my favorite Hawk, therefore I would never have taken [JN] over Al. (another clean cut / non crazy).
Perhaps I’m more normal than I think, @ least I’m talking to you, Right!

I doubt they would give him up / they love him up there.
Only way is if Joe does leave…S & T / Chicago.
[JN] & they would want us to take on Kirk Hinrich [contract].
Rather have Joe.
But I would explore alternatives, because I like him so much.

tiger woo, I think there are many coaches that are worse – Bob Wetzel, I. Thomas, Dunleavy, etc but IMO I don’t believe the Hawks are nearly as good as they should be. A stronger coach – Nate McMillan, Fratello, H Brown, J Sloan, Scott Skiles, etc would go further with this team than Woody ever will. They also likely wouldn’t last as long with the Hawks because after a while the players would likely be fed up with them. But if such a coach gets them to the finals or thereabouts, that is ok with me. So I give Woody some credit for getting them to the 2nd round but unless they get to the Conf Finals or beyond, I say they have significantly underachieved with the primary reason being Woodson.

Good enough, beone – but let me ask you this . . . are we better than Orlando and Cleveland – talent wise? Getting past the 2nd round without the home-court advantage would be over-achieving. I’m just looking for a competitive series with Orlando – at least 6 games. If we can steal a road win, it could get interesting.

Against Orlando, a team that’s kicked our butt all yr, Woodson won’t have the luxury of waiting until the last min to make much needed adjustments, and then expect the players to save his stubborn butt again.
They’ve destroyed our switching DEF each time we’ve played, so it would be wise for Woodson to abandon it completely against them. But we all know he’s too stubborn and mule headed to do that. I’d let Horford play Howard with limited help, make certain none of his teammates hurt us, and take away their 3pt shooting. I’d dress RMorris instead of MWest, and use Horford, Zaza, Collins and Morris to wear him down and get him in fowl trouble.
Since DHoward is the only interior DEF starter they have, and he covers up his teammates poor DEF, we need to quickly move the ball. which would force him to rotate with the ball to give help. Horford needs to rely heavily on hitting that medium range jumper and force Howard to come out and play him. When he does, Horford can fake and go to the basket on him. Most of Howard’s fouls are outside the lane.

If the hawks share the basketball the rest of the way, they will win the title this season. Hopefully by next season, woody will implement plays specifically designed to utilize the talents of our skilled players. My guess is by then we might be attempting BACK-TO-BACK titles if woody is serious about finding plays for Jamal, Joe, Marvin, Bibby, Smoove and Horford. I am predicting back to back titles for the hawks once these plays are designed. We should win the title this year because the competition is so soft. Go Hawks. Hawks will sweep Orlando in four games. That is quite a difference than getting our butts kicked by the Bucks.

Yeah, I wish we could land Noah too. I agree with you that we NEED more & better players to round out this team. I don’t know what another coach could have done with that sorry bench tho.
The starters need back-up help. I almost see J-Cross as a starter/closer rather than a true bench guy.
I admitt we switch too much. & maybe run too many ISO’s. But who else would you have take those shots on this roster? You saw Maurice take 4 point blank short jumpers in the 4th qrtr. Melt-Down in Game 5! Switches merely help the perimeter guards who don’t guard well.
T
He roster has serious flaws G_Daddy. Rick Carlisle has the same problem in Dallas. People want him here. Woody learned them switches from Larry Brown – that’s his staple defensive scheme – yet people want Larry Brown here? We just need better players Pops!
Ala Magic & Cleveland…Lakers! Bulls looked nice in series, but they only got Rose & Noah. Their coach Del Negro is nice too- so, should he be fired too?

The Hawks should hire Michael Jordan to replace Woody as a player-coach. I know michael is the owner of the bobcats, but during his off days Michael could probably help the hawks and take them to the next level.
