Atlanta Hawks Squawks Game 5: Bucks 91, Hawks 87

Woody didn't help his case in Game 5.

Woody didn't help his case in Game 5.

– So it’s come to this for the Hawks: Woody invoking his days in Detroit, when the Pistons won a Game 6 at New Jersey and then clinched the series at home in the East semifinals. “We’re a long ways away from Detroit, I know,” he said. “But that’s how guys have got to think.”

– They can think it, and maybe that’s all they have to go on right now, but it doesn’t make it true. That Pistons team was led by tough-minded veterans. They’d already been to the East finals. They played defense with zeal in a system they were committed to. They shared the ball on offense and didn’t have a star who dominated the ball.

– The Hawks are nothing like that. They are facing elimination by a six seed missing its two best players and run by a rookie point guard. And they got to this point with a collapse that I’d call incredible except I saw similar Hawks folds so many times down the stretch.

– The only remarkable part about this one was it happened at home, where the Hawks usually pulled out these kind of games. Not this time. “This is like a bad dream,” Jamal said while slumped in a chair in the locker room.

– The Hawks led by nine with four minutes to play, and then they fell apart. “I thought we shot jumps shots and I thought we didn’t execute,” Woody said. “We really had control of the game. Our composure down the stretch, we really just let it get away.”

– Again, this is nothing we haven’t seen before from the Hawks.

– Now the Hawks go back to the Bradley Center, where they were blown out in Game 3 and couldn’t defend in either game. “We’re going to go win,” Al said. “No question about it. That’s the bottom line. We have to bring it back to Atlanta.”

– The Hawks fell into a trap with all their talk about earning home court advantage during the season and now using it in this series. I mean, they were talking that way after Game 3. Now they don’t have that advantage and face an elimination game on the road.

– Home wasn’t so great for the Hawks, anyway. There was a palpable nervousness in the arena throughout the first half and the Hawks looked tight. “Didn’t appear either team had the normal intensity for a Game 5,” Scott Skiles said. “I attribute that to we haven’t been in a game like this before.”

– In other words, the Bucks are relative playoffs neophytes. The Hawks aren’t. So why does this make two games out of five where the Bucks played with more poise when things got tight?

– The Hawks finally carved out some space from the Bucks in the third quarter, when Al made 4 of 5 shots and Marvin scored nine points while making 3 of 3 free throws. But then the fourth quarter came and the Hawks went back to their usual panicky offense.

– “We really weren’t getting good looks,” Al said. “We were forcing some stuff and got away from some of the things that were working for us earlier in the game. We kind of got exposed on the offensive end.”

– Not to be redundant, but we’ve seen this from the Hawks before.

– Probably if the Bucks hadn’t lost Bogut to an injury they wouldn’t even be the six seed. But if they had him in this series, it would be over already. “He’s an all-league caliber defender,” Skiles said. “We miss his ability to plug the middle. His shot-blocking, his rebounding his back-to-the-basket game. We don’t have that. But we are finding a way. We have to do it by committee.”

– Remember, Bogut wasn’t injured until April 3. The Bucks had to scramble to patch things together. They did it well enough to finish the seasons strong and put the Hawks on the ropes. “We didn’t have a lot of time to get continuity and a feel for each other,” Skiles said. “These guys just keep battling and going on.”

– It’s such a stark contrast to watch the Bucks, lacking the Hawks’ depth of offensive talent, quickly work the ball around the court until they find a gap in the Hawks’ D and get off a good shot. Then the Hawks pound the ball, stand around, force bad shots and generally have no offensive flow when they are met with resistance.

– Marvin scored 22 points and it didn’t matter. That’s because Joe, Bibby and Jamal combined to shoot 11 of 49.

– Jamal is having a bad series. He’s not the only one, of course, but he just hasn’t looked the same in his first postseason. “”It was good shots,” he said of his 4 for 14 night. “I was just short all night.”

- Joe fouled out for the first time since Jan., 2008, a span of 229 games. He’s fouled out in three of 699 regular-season games and never in the playoffs. Crawford missed all four shots after J.J. was gone with 2:15 to play. “We depend on him down the stretch but that’s no excuse,” Woody said. “We’ve got other guys that can score.”

– Woody’s future with the Hawks is in doubt. ASG’s Michael Gearon Jr. has made it clear that the team is being judged on its performance in the playoffs. I tried to talk to Gearon at halftime but he begged off and headed up to his suite.

– If the Hawks lose this series, chances are he’ll have something to say. Even if the Hawks advance to meet Orlando is anyone expecting them to suddenly figure things out?

– “It’s win or go home,” Jamal said. “That’s the slogan. That’s what it is.”

– I’m out, Hawks fans.

That is 15 games this year in which the Hawks scored 18 points or less in the fourth quarter. Their record in those games? 3-12.

Whenever we mentioned these kinds of droughts, some people were quick to point out how the Hawks were 4th in offensive efficiency. Well, where has that offensive efficiency gotten us? On the brink of elimination to a team with a first year HC, a rookie PG, and missing its 2 best players.

(By the way, which Bucks starter would start for the Hawks right now?).

From Rosen: “And exactly how did the Hawks try to manifest their spectacular advantage in talent? By running an endless series of isolations — 42 to be exact, which accounted for nearly half of their 83 total shots, which produced 40 points”….”Compare this situation with the Bucks, who ran 17 isos that generated only nine points”.

When the going gets tough, people resort to what they know. When the game gets tight, the Hawks go back to what they do, which makes me think is also what they practice. And when something happens that often, the HC ultimately takes the blame (although JJ and Crawford stunk it up tonight).

Michael Cunningham – I for one very much appreciate your

LC – Mr, Gearon didn’t compare our current day Hawks to the
80’s Celtics, he said they [Celtics] were the model with which
he hoped to build [our Hawks].

To All – Joe may not be a super-star but he is a complete player.
There is no way to adequately replace him under the current system.

Mark Bradley / says if we lose this series / the Hawks will dismantle
their roster & fire the coach.
Dismantling the roster would be assinine.
Firing the coach goes w/o question.

What’s really funny is those of us who railed against Wdsn for not playing Teague [beginning with the 1st game] are watching a scenario
play out that would be comical if it were not so sad. Wdsn probably wishing that he had prepared the young man for the play-offs. The
very 1st play-off series & he’s undone by a super-quick pt. guard.
There is a bit of irony that his lack of trust for rookie pt. guards
will probably sound his death knell as a coach for the Hawks.

JeJe, I agree with you. Yes, I said it! I agree with you. There is no urgency with these guys. Really, they need to grow a pair of balls. I hate the word choke in sports, but that is what the Hawks are doing.

I thought I had grown up past the point where my sports teams winning or losing had an impact on my mood. I haven’t. I am just sick to my stomach today. As someone who was there on the ground floor of this rebuilding process, I feel like it was all for nothing. This organization is going to be blown up when, not if, but when the Hawks lose on Friday.

And, I think all of these guys are expendable. There is not one player on that roster who we can’t live without.

Wondering if anyone can help me out with this….is there a way to get out of season tickets, even if you have already paid? I really do not want anything more to do with the Hawks.

Rich the Cleveland fan is right. Najeh is on point as usual. The Bucks have no inside presence with Bogut out, they are destroying us on the perimeter. They actually allow the zone defencse in the NBA now but Woodson have the Hawks switchand several times during the game you have Horford gaurding jennings on the perimeter. That takes Horford away from the basket and takes away rebounding and him defending the paint and Jennings takes him to the hole all day everyday. Scott Skiles have done a great job designing those mismatches, Woodson have been unable to and refuses to adjust. All of you who are screaming for Avery Johnson, he was out couched as well against the Heat in that Championship series. I knew in the first quarter the hawks would lose that game. I have seen the story of how the fall apart all season. The Hawks couild have easily won the South. They should have won 60 games. They threw away 10 games this season playing just like they did last night. Rick Sund you did the right thing by not resigning Woodson. I hope you can find a Good coach to lead this team. The team does not need to be dismantled, we just need another coach. Maybe thats why Marvin have no blossomed into the player he should be for us.

Najeh Davenpoop

I don’t want to sound like Fake Rick Sund, but don’t for a minute think this team has maxed out its potential. The players laid an egg and deserve to be raked over the coals like we’ve all been doing, but the entire front court is young enough that they can all be expected to improve. Josh can improve his post moves and decision making, Al can improve his post moves and assume the vacant vocal leadership role on this team, and Marvin can improve his long range jumper and on ball defense to be the Hawks’ version of Bruce Bowen. I think it’s also reasonable to expect Teague to exceed what Bibby has given the Hawks over his tenure here, although he may never be that caliber of jump shooter. Joe, Jamal, and Zaza are too old at this point to be expected to improve, but all can be expected to be productive. In other words, the people crying out to break up this team are wrong. The players are not the problem; what the Hawks need personnel-wise is a couple of Kurt Thomases to toughen this team up.

Of course, none of that growth mentioned above can be expected to happen under Woodson. Nothing against him as a person — he has always come across as an honest, stand up guy — but he has done everyhing he can with this team. Just like Detroit fired Rick Carlisle after two 50-win seasons, the Hawks need someone else to take them to the next level.

Wow, SEKOU confirmed everything this morning. Finally, somebody in the media has put Woodrow on blast. He stated only two players showed up to see Jamal receive his 6th man award and neither player was a starter. He stated the older players (JJ & Bibby) don’t trust the younger players. There’s a disconnect between Josh and the team.
When asked if Jennings would have the same rookie season in Atlanta, Sekou stated NO. Woody does not believe in playing rookie pg. He stated Teague should have gotten major burn. Furthermore he stated this team was divided. When asked about Woodrow’s replacement, he stated Larry Drew was a different coach.

Hmmmm, now we know THIS IS WOODY BALL FOLKS.

Wabe

April 29th, 2010
9:50 am

Northclyde, you said that it’s on the players for making the same mistake game after game going down the stretch?

They execute what they practice. And when you see players constantly hollering at each other with their hands up looking for the ball, it’s obvious they’re just taking turns trying to get buckets. Just think about it, with 18 seconds or so left, we call a timeout, and Jamal comes down the floor and tosses it to Horford for a 3 at the top of the key? That’s what Woody drew up? That’s the best shot we could get? Credit Horford for making it, but that wasn’t a good look, and I’ll bet Woody told Jamal to look for his own shot at the top of the key. Hell, the Bucks knew that themselves, why do you think they doubled down on Jamal?

When you have a trend (a pattern) that indicates we tend to stagnate in the 4th quarter, and you see little to no tactical change from *coach* to help address the issue, you can’t help but point to the *coach’s* approach. The Hawks half-court offense is “atrocious” as Charles Barkley said, and it’s been that way for quite some time. Yet, we still see the same showing game after game. Nothing changes, from coaching to the players execution. I don’t think you can lose 3 games straight in the playoffs and come out and *hope* to execute a little better in the next game. Sad to say this, but, that’s what we’ll end up seeing…

“Switching is what we do…”
“ISO-JJ is how we go out…its worked well for us in some games…”

Are you kidding me?

“We just have to figure it out…”

Have you figured it out yet?

Section 303

April 29th, 2010

Nejeh, I sort of agree, but not really.

Losing this series (and, they’re losing this series) is a major step backwards. I am going to assume Joe is out of here. He just looks tired of trying to get guys to play hard. When that happens, you really think the team will be better, even if Woodson is gone?

Josh Smith is never going to be able to carry a team. One, it’s hard for a PF to do that. Two, Josh is just a no show too many nights to ever be the main guy on any team. He coasts a lot.

Marvin….he is a poter child for what a head case athlete looks like. He was great last night, but you think he will do that again Friday? No, you know he won’t. That guy is just a mental midget and is not capable of getting himself to play at a high level night in, night out.

Al…he’s good. But, again, he’s going to be the main guy? No.

Jamal Crawford, who you didn’t mention, is driving me nuts. I wondered all year why Golden State would want to let him go. Now, I’m starting to see why. He was horrible last night. I mean, just f’ing awful. He missed open jumpers, layups, everything. Assuming Joe is gone, he becomes the main scoring option…yikes!

Bibby and Zaza….anyway we can unload these two? Bibby is becoming a baby. Zaza has been sh#t ever since he had that temper tantrum with Woodson in Game 2. You know, Zaza, if you are going to publically get into a fight with your coach, you better f’ing play well after it. He goes and rants at Woodson, but then craps his pants after.

Agree that Woodson needs to go. But, I still say the loss of this series is on the players. They mentally shut down for Game 3. And, once an athlete shuts down, you can’t just magically flip the switch and get your high level back. Game 3 is when the Hawks lost this series. And, I think, showed their true colors.

Section 303, I’m not saying any of those players will carry the Hawks necessarily, just that it’s not accurate to expect that this team can’t and won’t improve significantly from where they are.

As far as them being head cases and having trust issues, that can be solved with veteran leadership and a coach that knows what he’s doing. If Rasheed Wallace and Stephen Jackson can win titles, so can Josh Smith.
