Woody didn't help his case in Game 5.
– So it’s come to this for the Hawks: Woody invoking his days in Detroit, when the Pistons won a Game 6 at New Jersey and then clinched the series at home in the East semifinals. “We’re a long ways away from Detroit, I know,” he said. “But that’s how guys have got to think.”
– They can think it, and maybe that’s all they have to go on right now, but it doesn’t make it true. That Pistons team was led by tough-minded veterans. They’d already been to the East finals. They played defense with zeal in a system they were committed to. They shared the ball on offense and didn’t have a star who dominated the ball.
– The Hawks are nothing like that. They are facing elimination by a six seed missing its two best players and run by a rookie point guard. And they got to this point with a collapse that I’d call incredible except I saw similar Hawks folds so many times down the stretch.
– The only remarkable part about this one was it happened at home, where the Hawks usually pulled out these kind of games. Not this time. “This is like a bad dream,” Jamal said while slumped in a chair in the locker room.
– The Hawks led by nine with four minutes to play, and then they fell apart. “I thought we shot jumps shots and I thought we didn’t execute,” Woody said. “We really had control of the game. Our composure down the stretch, we really just let it get away.”
– Again, this is nothing we haven’t seen before from the Hawks.
– Now the Hawks go back to the Bradley Center, where they were blown out in Game 3 and couldn’t defend in either game. “We’re going to go win,” Al said. “No question about it. That’s the bottom line. We have to bring it back to Atlanta.”
– The Hawks fell into a trap with all their talk about earning home court advantage during the season and now using it in this series. I mean, they were talking that way after Game 3. Now they don’t have that advantage and face an elimination game on the road.
– Home wasn’t so great for the Hawks, anyway. There was a palpable nervousness in the arena throughout the first half and the Hawks looked tight. “Didn’t appear either team had the normal intensity for a Game 5,” Scott Skiles said. “I attribute that to we haven’t been in a game like this before.”
– In other words, the Bucks are relative playoffs neophytes. The Hawks aren’t. So why does this make two games out of five where the Bucks played with more poise when things got tight?
– The Hawks finally carved out some space from the Bucks in the third quarter, when Al made 4 of 5 shots and Marvin scored nine points while making 3 of 3 free throws. But then the fourth quarter came and the Hawks went back to their usual panicky offense.
– “We really weren’t getting good looks,” Al said. “We were forcing some stuff and got away from some of the things that were working for us earlier in the game. We kind of got exposed on the offensive end.”
– Not to be redundant, but we’ve seen this from the Hawks before.
– Probably if the Bucks hadn’t lost Bogut to an injury they wouldn’t even be the six seed. But if they had him in this series, it would be over already. “He’s an all-league caliber defender,” Skiles said. “We miss his ability to plug the middle. His shot-blocking, his rebounding his back-to-the-basket game. We don’t have that. But we are finding a way. We have to do it by committee.”
– Remember, Bogut wasn’t injured until April 3. The Bucks had to scramble to patch things together. They did it well enough to finish the seasons strong and put the Hawks on the ropes. “We didn’t have a lot of time to get continuity and a feel for each other,” Skiles said. “These guys just keep battling and going on.”
– It’s such a stark contrast to watch the Bucks, lacking the Hawks’ depth of offensive talent, quickly work the ball around the court until they find a gap in the Hawks’ D and get off a good shot. Then the Hawks pound the ball, stand around, force bad shots and generally have no offensive flow when they are met with resistance.
– Marvin scored 22 points and it didn’t matter. That’s because Joe, Bibby and Jamal combined to shoot 11 of 49.
– Jamal is having a bad series. He’s not the only one, of course, but he just hasn’t looked the same in his first postseason. “”It was good shots,” he said of his 4 for 14 night. “I was just short all night.”
- Joe fouled out for the first time since Jan., 2008, a span of 229 games. He’s fouled out in three of 699 regular-season games and never in the playoffs. Crawford missed all four shots after J.J. was gone with 2:15 to play. “We depend on him down the stretch but that’s no excuse,” Woody said. “We’ve got other guys that can score.”
– Woody’s future with the Hawks is in doubt. ASG’s Michael Gearon Jr. has made it clear that the team is being judged on its performance in the playoffs. I tried to talk to Gearon at halftime but he begged off and headed up to his suite.
– If the Hawks lose this series, chances are he’ll have something to say. Even if the Hawks advance to meet Orlando is anyone expecting them to suddenly figure things out?
– “It’s win or go home,” Jamal said. “That’s the slogan. That’s what it is.”
– I’m out, Hawks fans.

Even though Gearon wouldn’t talk to MC tonight, everybody should go back and read some of these gem answers from him last week, http://blogs.ajc.com/hawks/2010/04/19/atlanta-hawks-asgs-michael-gearon-jr-talks-hawks/?cxntfid=blogs_hawks.
He actually has the nerve to compare this team to the celtics team with Bird, McHale, Parrish, and Ainge. What a freaking idiot. Why are ATL fans so damn tortured.

This is a re-post from the other blog.
**********************************************
Let me ask some of you a question:
What did the Bucks do, scheme-wise in those final 4 minutes, to help them get a victory?
A: NOT A DAMN THING
*************
They won that game, simply because the players kept scrapping and they made plays.
- Salmons taking a standstill 3 and making it, because JJ backed off of him
- Kurt Thomas drawing an offensive foul ( charge ) from JJ on that out of control drive
- Jennings doing a Chauncey Billups-esque pump fake on JJ, to draw a foul . . 21 feet away from the basket
- Salmons drive to get to the FT line after Ilyasova got to a missed FT before Smoove did . . . ( because Smoove didn’t box him out )
- Delfino taking and making an early in the shot clock standstill 3, after Ilyasova got an offensive rebound. . . which was the DAGGER, because it put them up 4
Those are all either heads-up plays . . or hustle plays . . plays that their PLAYERS made. Meanwhile, we’re running into people, blowing wide open lay-ups, taking wild jumpshots, and ironically . . looking like a (( bleepin )) deer in headlights.
And I’m pizzed at JJ for what he DIDN’T do.
You CANNOT take 2 shots total in the 4th quarter of a playoff game, and commit all of those turnovers . . plus break down defensively. I don’t care if he was having a bad shooting game. or not. He’s the floor leader in that situation. Get your damn shots up or get to the line. But don’t defer. Don’t play that passive ish like you played during last playoffs. And if a dude is playing you too tight, just shoot over him.
And those defensive breakdowns . . . wow. I expect that from Mike Bibby, not JJ. For all the good JJ did in that 3rd quarter to help build the lead, he was a huge culprit in the disintegration that lead in the 4th.
********************
As for Woody . . my stance has always been that you can’t solely give credit to the players if we win, but solely blame Woody if we lose. Woody has a hand in ALL LOSSES, but so do these players. When you see a team make mistake after mistake coming down the stretch of games, you have to put some of that on the players.
A lot of it actually. Especially the mental errors. And in a game like this. These players had a complete mental breakdown. And the reason you know that, is because it happened on BOTH ENDS OF THE FLOOR . . . not just the offensive end.

The Chuckster’s take was mind-boggling, but I can’t say I disagree with any of his reasoning.
Do the Hawks actually dislike each other? I’d love to find out.
Maybe they just dislike the fact that their scheme, or lack thereof, makes everything ten times as hard as it needs to be.

It’s funny he would call the Hawks “Denver East”, especially since Denver’s chemistry issues really only started cropping up again after their coach left the team due to his illness.

Woody has no offensive game plan…so the Hawks run playground offense. Woody has no control or authority…so the Hawks do whatever the hell they want when they want(i.e. Iso Joe, Jamal bricks, Smoove threes, etc.). No coaching leads to no execution. No execution leads to helter skelter offense. Helter Skelter offense leads to breakdown after breakdown at the ends of games.

I know I dont write on here much, but I will go ahead and say I am a loyal fan of all things atlanta. I have been to every hawks playoff game since we made the run the past three years and average about 15 hawks games a year. I also reminisce with the jax and rider days. Tonight at the game though was just unspeakable. When I have a hawks fan trying to fight me in the fourth quarter for standing up and rooting the JJ less hawks when he cant see cause he refuses to stand up an do the same. Having a hawks fan throwing punches at me because I am loyal enough to stand up at games speakes volumes of this fan base. I dont even hardly blame the team or the coach. I am a poor GT student who manages to secure tickets to at least 15 games a season and hasnt missed a playoff game since the Woodson era began. If I cant stand up and cheer on the hawks in the upper deck then what can I do. Screw the guy who is responsible for my blackeye and called security 3 times because my friends and I were standing and trying to will this Hawks team to a game 5 victory… The fourth game against the Celtics this season when we were going for the sweep I had similar yet more docile fans telling me to sit down. This is why the arena is empty cause a fan cant stand up, cheer, and have a good time. Peace b*tches. I’m out. I would love to attend a game 7 but I feel like the team is much like the d*uche sitting behind me tonight. Unwilling to get up when it matters the most.

I know you’re not addressing me directly, but let me respond regardless. I gave Woody credit throughout the regular season for keeping the Hawks winning, especially when they beat good teams like the March 24 game against the Magic. Woody still retains the solid B he earned for the regular season.
Unfortunately, he is an F- in the playoffs, and Scott Skiles is straight up embarrassing him. I can’t rationalize keeping him around after being this overmatched in the most important games of the season.

They’re definitely DENVER EAST. I’ve said all year that they play EXACTLY like the Nuggets.
And the Nuggets coach is head and shoulders better than ours. Yet, they do the same things and have the same mental breakdowns that we do. They don’t collapse like we do. They simply go through games in which they just do a lot of stupid stuff that causes them to lose games.
Utah plays like that too, even though they have better fundamental structure than both Denver and Atlanta. Utah is a totally different team on the road, but can beat anybody at home.
But the Hawks twin brother is definitely Denver. And like Barkley said Monday night after Denver lost . . . people can’t blame the George Karl sickness and him not being there, on why Denver is down in that series. Denver has played like that ALL YEAR, even with Karl running the show.
That’s why I say that people better start taking a long hard look at these players, and see how they play in certain situations. Coach can’t go out on the floor and hold their hand. They can call better plays and direct the ball be thrown to different people.
But the coach can’t execute the play . . . or have that player box out for a rebound . . . or have that player pass the ball before the trap comes . . . or make that player make a wide open lay-up . . . or make that player hustle after a loose ball.
That stuff is on the players. And if they don’t do that, then that’s on them.
Blame the coach for the play-calling and personnel. Blame the players for the execution and the desire to win.

I’m reading through the posts here and have noticed complaints about Al shooting too many shots tonight. How can you people think he’s taking too many shots when he is shooting at 50+% from the field? What the Hawks did with Al Horford tonight was great. They made an effort to get the ball inside and let Al take advantage of mismatches and get high percentage shots. That was one of the positives from this game. Horford is the most efficient scorer on the team and when he is getting high percentage shots and converting them, there is no need to complain. He definitely had the best all-around performance of any player on the court tonight.

I’m a fan of the Cavaliers and am just trolling around the Hawks forums after this loss. I’m not here to make fun of anything but to simple ask a question that I’ve had since last year, how can a guy who thinks it’s a good idea to swtich EVERYTHING on defense, including switching 1s and 5s, be a head coach? It’s stunning. Mike Brown takes a lot of heat for forcing LeBron to go 1 on 5, but at least he saves that for the fourth and not the whole game. And at least Brown has a defensive scheme that works. Woodson asks his players to go 1 on 5 the entire night and asks Al Horford to guard Brandon Jennings. I mean…everything about his coaching is wrong. How did he EVER get a job? Just answer that if you can.

Najeh . . . I’d be a fool to say that Skiles isn’t outcoaching Woody in this series. You’ll never get me to say that he isn’t.
LOL . . but this was an epic collapse mainly because we made catastrophic mental mistakes, and they simply scrapped and clawed and hustled their way to giving themselves a chance at victory.
I mean . . . they only made 6 shots in the quarter. Six.
But they were 15 – 18 from the FT line . . . while we didn’t shoot not one damn FT.
Even when we drove the basketball, we were either turning it over, or missing lay-ups, or committing offensive fouls.
Simple basketball execution. I mean damn . . . Can’t make a lay-up? . . Can’t close out a shooter without fouling? . . Can’t box out on a FT?
And Rich . . . we don’t go 1 on 5 the entire night. We save that for the 4th quarter just like you guys do. It’s just that for some reason tonight, JJ completely melted down, and couldn’t even get his shots up without turning the ball over or committing offensive fouls.
Woody got the job because no other coach wanted the job . . . and because our organization didn’t want to pay for a big name head coach. The switching defense almost beat you guys twice during the regular season. It’s an effective defense at times. Hell . .it was effective tonight. The Bucks only shot 40.5% and Jennings, after starting 5 – 7 FG, shot 3 – 13 FG the rest of the way.
This squad just mentally broke down tonight, after having this game in complete control.

We still lost, Woody still isn’t as good of a coach as you have been claiming all year long, and Joe just took a huge crap on the big stage when we needed him most. You placing blame on Joe a couple of times in the playoffs (and being rather mild about it, too) is a mere flea on the ass of the number of posts where you have defended him against any and all criticisms, no matter how big or small, throughout the entire season.

Credit the Bucks for their gutsy 91-87 win that gained them a commanding 3-2 advantage as the series returns to Milwaukee. The Bucks fashioned their victory by making big plays at both ends of the court, never giving up, and getting terrific play from their bench players.
At the same time, discredit the Atlanta Hawks for their impatience, for their pathetic cheap-shot attempts to try and prove that they’re really a bunch of tough guys, and for their dismal team-wide performance in the clutch.
Here are the specifics:
Brandon Jennings got the Bucks rolling by nailing four consecutive jumpers right out of the gate. After his initial hot streak, however, he only hit 2-of-11 springers. In fact, after Zaza Pachulia blasted him to the floor and incurred a flagrant foul 1:13 into the second quarter, the rookie virtually disappeared.
After making the two resulting freebies from the stripe, Jennings had 14 points in 13 minutes. And except for the four free throws he converted in the endgame, he scored only seven more in 28 minutes. Also, Jennings nearly ruined Milwaukee’s chances to win the game by foolishly over-handling the ball.
But the young man did make those critical foul shots, and he did get the Bucks on the scoreboard early and often.
Carlos Delfino was MIA for most of the game, until he unexpectedly materialized to drop a crucial trey and grab an important rebound in the waning moments of the game.
Kurt Thomas didn’t score a single point, but was the only big man who could control Al Horford.
Luke Ridnour came off the bench — 5-7, 4 steals, 15 points — to hit several big buckets and do what Jennings was unable to do, i.e., organize the offense.
My man Ersan Ilyasova was usually a step slow and a step wrong on defense, but he hustled his way to 3-of-5 shooting, 7 rebounds, one assist, one steal and 7 points in 22 minutes. Plus he made a pair of incredible shots, one incredible pass, and came up with an incredible offensive rebound.
Luc Mbah a Moute played rock-hard defense.
Dan Gadzuric distinguished himself by scoring a pair of charity layups, and by getting hit in the back of the head by a pass from John Salmons.
And the game ball goes to John Salmons, whose numbers weren’t overwhelming — 6-17 (including 2-3 from beyond the arc), 5 assists, 19 points. Still, Salmons was Milwaukee’s go-to scorer down the stretch, and he also stifled Joe Johnson’s tricky offensive slants when the game was on the line.
Even though they lacked a shot-blocker to close down the middle, even though they were slower, less athletic, and significantly less talented than Atlanta, the Bucks persevered on the basis of their hustle and their heart. In other words, they have all the characteristics of their coach, the redoubtable Scott Skiles.
Meanwhile, the Hawks were a disgrace.
They rarely moved the ball from side-to-side, and were more interested in blocking shots than in playing solid defense.
And exactly how did the Hawks try to manifest their spectacular advantage in talent? By running an endless series of isolations — 42 to be exact, which accounted for nearly half of their 83 total shots. Josh Smith, Marvin Williams, Al Horford, Iso-Joe Johnson and Jamal Crawford all were allowed to dribble this way and that way until they could find what they believed to be an acceptable shot. All of these individualistic exhibitions produced 40 points.
Compare this situation with the Bucks, who ran 17 isos that generated only nine points.
Only Williams (8-10, 22 points) and Horford (11-21, 25 points) rose to the occasion. Otherwise, Mike Bibby was 1-5 and useless; JJ was 6-16 and was smothered by Salmons; Josh Smith was 3-8 with 3 blocks and was mostly AWOL, and Crawford had a John Starks-type performance, shooting a ludicrous 4-18.
The Hawks as a group also showed their true colors — yellow-on-yellow — by missing multiple shots in the clutch, with Crawford being the primary villain in this department.
For Atlanta to lose such an important game at home to a decidedly inferior team like the Bucks is nothing short of shameful. Moreover, Scott Skiles would absolutely destroy Mike Woodson in a game of one-on-one.
Yep. Called Josh out on his “going for the big play” style of defense.
Pointed out how Joe got stifled by a journeyman shooting guard who has been traded twice in 2 years. But there is a reason for that:
You play the way you practice. If you don’t run a series of pick-and-rolls and screens in practice, you won’t do it in games. Joe gets left to play 1-on-whatever, and come what may. Brilliant scheme…
