The Hawks like it here.
So how much conversation has there been among the Hawks regarding the rumors swirling around Woody’s future with the team?
“That’s the first I’ve heard about it when you told me,” Al said today at shootaround.
In addition to illustrating the often-insular world players occupy, the lack of buzz on the team about Woody’s status demonstrates that the familiar postures haven’t changed.
Rick Sund still is not going to do address Woody’s deal until after the season and there’s no guarantee an offer (even a “low-ball” one as described in the Yahoo! report) is forthcoming. ASG’s Michael Gearon Jr has suggested the Hawks’ postseason will have a bearing on that decision and others. Woody isn’t happy the Hawks haven’t started contract talks and has said so (though he also says he wants to return). The Hawks believe the lack of an extension hasn’t hurt Woody’s ability to coach the team.
The news to come out of the Yahoo! report is that there could be another job out there for Woody if he doesn’t return and the team’s willingness to sell their first-round draft pick for $3 million to raise money to re-sign J.J.. (That everything seems to be Joe-driven is causing great consternation for hawksdawgs at Peachtree Hoops.)
Meanwhile, the Hawks have a playoff series to finish. Asked about the Hawks’ confidence in coming back to Philips Arena, where they’ve won 14 in a row, Al said it “feels good to be back home” but then couldn’t help also talking about the Hawks’ troubles on the road.
“If we had the same swag that we have at home like we have on the road, we’d be a tough team,” he said. “But first we have to handle this game tonight. We are happy to come back here.”
– For all the consternation about the Hawks’ inability to win road playoff games (and I know most of that is because of what it would mean for the next round) this Milwaukee Journal Sentinel headline summed up Milwaukee’s issues: Bucks must win at least once in Atlanta to advance.
Forget for a minute that four games into the series, the Bucks are talking about what it will take to advance instead of how they can avoid elimination. The Hawks desperately need to win. The way they did that in Games 1 and 2 was by slowing Brandon Jennings and hammering the Bucks with Smoove and Al. Look for Milwaukee to use a similar approach against those two tonight:
The Bucks worked hard to frustrate Hawks center Al Horford and forward Josh Smith in Milwaukee, after those players were dominant in the first two games. Bucks forward Luc Richard Mbah a Moute defended Smith in Games 3 and 4 after primarily guarding Hawks guard Joe Johnson in Atlanta, and veteran center Kurt Thomas drew the assignment defending Horford.
And the Bucks have relied on help defense, with Jennings and other guards digging down on the ball when the Hawks’ big men begin to make their move in the paint. That did free up Atlanta’s perimeter players in Game 4, and the Hawks hit 10 of 19 three-pointers, led by Mike Bibby, who sank 5 of 7 attempts.
Smith still had 20 points and nine rebounds in 40 minutes in Game 4, but he wasn’t getting easy dunks off lob passes the way he did earlier in the series.
“He had a good game, and he scores in a variety of ways,” Bucks coach Scott Skiles said of the 6-foot-9 Smith, who was booed loudly by the Bradley Center crowd. “We’ve just got to keep him in front of us, try to make him take contested jump shots, try to keep him off the boards.
“We need to keep him from running out in transition, keep him from getting lobs after timeouts. We did that in both home games. Those are areas where at least we can have a little say-so in what he’s doing.”
– Woody has said he uses the switching defense to “hide” weak defenders. Brett LaGree, writing at Hoopinion, agrees but says switching also can make things harder for those weak defenders and the good ones:
It is hard to play good team defense without good defensive players.
Mike Bibby is a poor defender. Jamal Crawford is a terrible defender. Joe Johnson has amply demonstrated he cannot keep Brandon Jennings in front of him. Nor can Johnson fight through a Kurt Thomas screen. It’s no surprise that Mike Woodson has tried to address* these limitations. His singular method of address, to switch every screen, has pushed Josh Smith too often to the perimeter, exposing his primary defensive weakness (lateral movement) while simultaneously negating** his overwhelming strength (help defense).
*We’ll ignore, for the purposes of this discussion, how self-inflicted some of these limitations are.
**This is essentially what Orlando’s stretch 4 does to Smith when the Hawks play, and, typically, lose to the Magic.

I expect a huge Hawks win tonight. Not because I think they’ve learned anything from Gms 3 & 4 or b/c a loss by the Hawks put them on the brink of elimination. I believe they win simply b/c they’re at home. I assume this series goes 7 simply because it can and because the Hawks lack the intenstinal fortitude to get it done on the road.

I do not agree that Joe has not been able to keep Jennings in front of him. Joe really has not guarded Jennings that often, for one thing. And, in Game 2, Joe locked Jennings up on consecuative defensive series. Brett LaGree = another lazy writer who pays little attention. First SI calls Joe a good “3rd option” last year. Now, some hack is giving him grief for not playing D.
After doing nothing but p#ss and moan about the Hawks since Saturday, I’m starting to get anxious for tonight’s game. I’m worried, though. I do not like hearing all the assumptions that the Hawks will win just because the game is at Philips. Feeling that this game will probably be close. Who knows how the Hawks will respond to that?
Also, wondering how the crowd will react to this game. Will it be loud? Or, are people so down on the team that they either won’t be as loud? Or, will people just not be there? I am betting it is not a sellout tonight. And, if that’s the case, I can’t really get on the fans. The Hawks have done nothing to make people believe they are a different team.
Tired of hearing Hawk players talk about effort being the problem in Milwaukee. I still do not understand how that can be. And, I am still having a hard time getting past last Saturday’s lazy effort. The team was expected to be past all this.

The referee situation in the nba is absurd. Did anyone watch the cavs-bulls last night. I agree that we got blown out of game 3, but game 4 was nothing but acting on the part of the bucks, and lots of bias from the refs.

So what’s the proper defensive adjustment if the switch is not optimum with this particular collection of players and their skill sets?

I believe most of the fault can be laid on Woodson. In any playoff series it’s about match ups and adjustments. The Hawks don’t have the ability to switch personal and make another team adjust to them. The truth lies in Woody’s stubborn a!! and his unwillingness to develop/use his bench during the regular season. Now, when you need a quick- defensive minded player in the game (like Teague), you can’t use him because he hasn’t been battle tested (with regular season action). The rest of the bench is more than serviceable, but not being used PROPERLY as a asset…oh well, Woody will lose this series and be out next year (along with Joe Johnson).

JJ cannot keep up with Jennings for the entire game. He can keep up with him in stretches, but that would take too much out of JJ defensively, and we will need him to be fresh on offense.

What I can’t understand is why a supposed defensive minded head coach, cannot come up with more schemes than a constant switching defense that leave us exposed (zone maybe). Also wasn’t joe smith brought in for the playoffs and he gets no playing time in game four, especially with Horford in foul trouble all night. Hmmm..

Sec 303 . . I hear what you’re saying about the fans. But if they don’t show up tonight . . for a critical playoff game . . then move the team to Louisville or somewhere. As a “fan”, you don’t pull that bandwagon type ish in the MIDDLE OF THE PLAYOFFS.
I know you’ll be there, because you’re one of the loyal ones. I tried my best to make the 300 mile trip tonight to Philips Arena, but I won’t be able to do it.
As for the rest of your post, you’re right. I guess Legree doesn’t see that they’re screening JJ every chance they get, in order to get Horford or some other big matched up on Jennings.
For me though, I’ll believe it when I see it, if the Bucks can win a game in Philips. They won’t be scared, but they also know that if the series is to be won by them, they need to take THIS GAME, and then try to close it out in Game 6 in Milwaukee.
I expect a win tonight, much like what happened in Game 2. I expect the Hawks to really be sharp tonight. And watch . . . the switching defense will WORK for some reason at home.

I disagree with Mr. LaGree:
“Mike Bibby is a poor defender. Jamal Crawford is a terrible defender.”
In my opinion:
Mike Bibby cannot defend anyone [anymore]. Jamal is a willing defender.
Jamal’s rep is that he is a horrible defender, but since he arrived here, it seems to me he has made a concerted effort to improve.
Poor old Bibby, physically, is just is not up to the task anymore.

Woody is a defensive minded coach, who continuously preaches defense. But it seems to me (and my untrained basketball eye), that whenever a team figures out how to exploit the switching defense (like Milwaukee did, like Charlotte did, like the Spurs did, just to name a few), I haven’t seen any adjustments from Woody.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but his defensive adjustment is to tell the players that they need to rotate faster, or defend with more energy. What about trying a zone defense? Trying to D up man to man? Or switch everything except Bibby’s guy (for example)? Is switching the only kind of defense Woody knows? And how do you know something else wont work if you never try it?
My two cents: If Teague had gotten more PT during the season, then he would not be such a liability when he comes into the game. And his defense would be a change of pace for the opponent. (Keep in mind, Jameer Nelson lit up the Bobcats. If he is on, Bibby and the Hawks will be in even more trouble next round).
But Woody was so concerned about the regular season record, that he ignored the possibility of what might happen in the playoffs. What happens if Bibby is not making shots? What happens if one of our guards get hurt?
That being said, I expect the Hawks to win big tonight.

Woodson should have been fired after last year. I’ve never seen a team so unprepared as the Hawks were this past Saturday. A high school basketball coach could be randomly picked to coach the Hawks and do, at a minimum, no worse than Woody and probably much better. Either the players are incredibly dumb and unable to grasp the concept of making adjustments as the game goes on, or the coach hasn’t prepared them. Woody must go.

My issue/fear with tonite:We don’t have the defensive game plan or personnel to stop a late dribble-drive (and/or kick-out) with B. Jennings running the point.

Hawks are too unpredictable.
It makes no sense to play Mike Bibby for several reasons:
1. He is an inconsistent scorer. Aside from hitting threes in the first quarter, rarely does he provide more than 4-9 points.
2. His defense is appalling. He’s too slow to cover any decent point guard in this league. off the top of my head Jason Kidd (37) and Andre Miller (34) are much faster and in much better shape. Both are leaders and they rack up assists on a nightly basis. Bibby would have to score 20 points a night just to even out all the open looks he gives his opponents on a nightly basis.
Say what you will about the unseasoned rookie, but Teague can stay in front of his man, and he doesn’t look to score. He’s a creative passer and can bring most of the things Jennings brings. Jennings is so damn inconsistent, all you’ve got to do is get a body on him. thats impossible do with Bibby in the game.
3. Too slow to run the fast-break, which Hawks need night in and night out in order to win ball games. He slows the offense down, because he is slow, and we’re not a great half-court team.
I hate Mike Bibby. Al Horford at Center is a very minor issue compared to Bibby at point guard. This is a point guard league, and we aint got one.

Lewis,
I think we actually do have a point guard that would probably be pretty good at this point had he not been underused during the regular season. JT0 is a good distributor, fast enough to run the break (heck he might outrun his wing players along with the defense), and quick enough to cause Jennings some frustration. He has a decent jumper judging from his days at Wake, but it is unproven against NBA level defense and will continue to be until he gets more playing time.

GRAMDAD-that had to be a misprint. Bibby is the one that’s a horrible defender. Crawford makes up for all of his DEF shortcomings with his consistent and dynamic overall OFF production. Until Crawford is allowed to fight over picks and play his man straight up, we can’t determine how much his DEf has or hasn’t improved.
If Woodson was able to think and reason beyond his limitations, he’d recognize the advantage of having Horford feed JJ on the post rather than the other way around. JJ is a matchup problem for anyone they use to guard him in the post, while Horford is having problems scoring in the paint against KThomas. In the 1st gm in Milwaukee, Horford also had trouble in the paint against KThomas, but then he went outside and lit him up.
Playing Horford outside will take Thomas away from the basket and hurt their rebounding. You’d think Woodson would have enough sense to see the Bucks fighting over our picks and getting all those illegal pick calls against Horford and Zaza. If we fight over their picks, instead of switching everything, we can get those same illegal pick calls.
Isn’t it ironic that Woodson, who has an obvious bias and disdane for rookie PG’s, is too stupid and incompetent to come up with a way to stop a rookie PG from shredding his teams DEF. What makes it even more ironic is the fact his only possible solution is JTeague, a rookie PG sitting on his bench that he refuses to even play. STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES!!!!!

I believe that Hawks biggest problem is when they take too much time off the clock trying to set up a score and then usually have to throw up a prayer shot. They need to move the ball more quickly on the offensive end and take the first shot that is open. They need to be able to slow down the Bucks offense and make them force more shots. If they do these two things then you will see a great result.

Forget stopping Jennings as a scorer. He is the engine that runs the Bucks machine. Let him score from long-range however he wishes but don’t allow him to get the others involved by getting into the lane where he can either have an easy shot, dish, or allow an easy putback by the Buck whose defender had to slide over and help on Jennings. He is not a great long-range shooter so let him have at it. If he makes some, no problem. He had 20 points and no assists at halftime of Game 1 we see how that game turned out. If he scores from deep, it will feed his ego and he can shoot them right out of the game. Just lock everyone else down. Also, force Jennings to go right as his tendency is to create things to the left. Just DO NOT let Delfino or Salmons get off and we’ll be fine. (Well as fine as we can be with Woody coaching)

Don’t give me that edutainment speech just get our boy, in the case Teague, on the court. We need a coach similar to Mike Smith to coach the Hawks. Someone who gets on his players behinds and makes adjustments when necessary.
If Brandon Jennings is killing you by getting in the paint, you pull Teague to the side and tell him your only job on thios court tonight is to stop him and PUT HIM IN!!!!! Who gives a flying flip if he can’t shoot or run the point. Move JJ to SF and Let Jamal run the point.
Lastly, Woodson must stop switching on the point guard…..when Jennings comes in then Teague, or Mario for that matter, should be meeting him at the scorers table.

It seems apparent that Woody’s contract will come down to how well the Hawks do in the playoffs, and that has been the intent of management all along. What other reason could there be for not initiating negotiations for a contract extention. The Hawks will have to win this serises and compete in the next for his extention to be assured. If the Hawks lose to the bucks, then Woody will probably be gone. If we beat the bucks then get swept out of the playoffs against the Magic then Wody will probably be gone. They will have to win at least two games in the next round for Woody to hope to stay. We do not have the injury excuse like we did last year against the Cleveland Lebrons. Time to put up or shut up.

Has anyone else wondered if Woodson’s coaching staff is as dense and unimaginative as he is, or do they know offering suggestions to his stubborn butt has proven to be a waste of time? I find it hard to believe that at least one of his assistants hasn’t noticed how ineffective Woody’s beloved switching DEF has been. I also can’t believe not a single one of them hasn’t thought that using Teague, instead of Zaza, Horford, Smoove or JJ, to guard Jennings might help improve our overall DEF effort.
Isn’t it funny how we Hawk fans are complaining about Woodson’s unwillingness to make adjustments and utilize stategies, when he’s obviously too stubborn and mule headed to admit something needs changing or adjusting, or listen to anyone that does. You’re not the only one. I believe the assistants will be let go with Woody.
Either they don’t know what they’re doing or they’re incapable of speaking up.
Whatever it is, they’re not getting the job done. Sund needs to step in.
There is more than one way to play offense and defense. I’m just not sure they know that.

we have got to be more physical with their small guards, jennings or ridenour: a few aggressive fouls by marvin or zaza(who are contributing nothing right now in this series, big shocker) let them take the fouls and let little erkle jennings start looking over his shoulder instead of dribbling around the court until he finds an outlet or outruns the defense for a layup. I agree with Nick S, why did we draft teague?he is very fast, hello, let him have a go at shadowing jennings, harassing him the way jennings abuses bibby. got to tell josh to quit launching 25 ft plus jumpers, not your strength big boy.
crisp passes, and for once, Block out on the boards!!I was appalled at all of the cheap second and third shots the bucks got because of three guys on the boards blocking out horford and mr.stand around marvin. Now it is time to get super aggressive and shut these guys down. Do it Hawks!!!!!!!!

But who has Teague stopped all year? In Game 1, Jennings lit him up too.
I’m not against trying Teague vs Jennings, but some of you act like he’s the obvious solution to the problem. What happens when Jennings doesn’t have the ball? Teague’s off the ball defense has been horrible as well this year.
Like I said . . I’m not against trying him. But if he gets torched, or looks lost ( like he has all year ), then all of the Teague talk needs to cease.
I’m hoping you guys are right though, just for sanity sake.

If Teague does get abused, then you move on to the next possible solution. Maybe Mario, or even playing straight up man defense. Maybe none of it works, but at least it’s something different than the switching defense which is proven to be ineffective against him. At the very least it will give Jennings some different looks which should slow him down somewhat.

No northclyde, no one’s saying JT0’s the solution to the problem for sure, but his quickness gives us the best chance of staying in front of him.
You yourself have said that we need to negate Jennings production. You’ve also suggested doubling Jennings. But, we tryed that at times the last game. The only problem was we were doubling him too far out, which left Delfino and Illyasova open in the corners. I think our best bet of slowing him down is to throw different bodies at him. Doubling him isn’t off the table, but we need to mix up what we do. As others have mentioned, we’re too predictable at the moment. Jennings knows he can dictate the matchup he gets because we’re constantly switching. JT0’s done a good job fighting through screens, and I think should be given a nod. Maybe he’s the counter.
If you noticed in the games that JT0 did check Jennings, Jennings may have gotten buckets, but they were tough buckets. Teague stayed in front of him, you just have to credit Jennings for making tough shots.
It’s worth a shot.
The status-quo isn’t working.

Everyone is too focused on thinking ONE PLAYER is gonna stop someone that handles the ball a much as Jennings . This is just STUPID
Its like the Bucks saying that the Salmons sucks at defense because Joe is scoring when Joe is gonna get his no matter simply because the amount of touches he is gonna get due to the way our defense is setup .
This is not like someone with limited chances(Stack,Ridnour, any of the bigs ) being allowed to go off and go crazy .
Someone please tell me who else did you guys think was gonna do the scoring for this Bucks team with Bogut out ?
The only way to attack a point guard scoring that well is to do it on BOTH ENDS of the floor. We keep magically think we are gonna find this mythical player that can shut down the primary scorer of a team without attacking him on both ends of the floor .
It simply aint gonna happen .
In game 3 jennings had 13 pts and in game 4 Delfino is the one who did us in .
People need to stop trying to blame this on Jennings scoring and start blaming the real culprits the disappearance of AL and Smoove on the road for long stretches of time .
Now we are back to the hey we have a dominate low post game …………but it only seems to work at home . That is another argument within itself .
lets go out play in attack mode these next two games and it get this series over with

its not just Jennings i’m worried about. It’s Dererk Fisher, Jameer Nelson, Russel Westbrook, Tony Parker, Mo Williams, Jason Kidd, Andre Miller, Deron Williams, Steve Nash, Chauncy Billups, Derek Rose, Rajon Rondo, Raymond Felton…
Mike Bibby is the worst PG in the playoffs. I can hit open looks, play no defense and pass the ball to Joe and lob it to Josh as well.

How about the Hawks stop being so darn lazy and switching everything. It’s not a good defense! The Bucks obviously want us to switch and we just go right ahead and put any slow big we have on Jennings so he flies right to the rim. Stop letting the Bucks DICTATE what you do on defense! If you put any of the other playoff coaches on our bench, this series would have already been over. Unfortunately, the Hawks have no shot at winning anything more than this series b/c of Home Court. Maybe we can go get Marc Jackson out of broadcasting or something. Oh, and we still need a true superstar. Joe isn’t the guy. Go get WADE!

well i believe the time to keep asking for Teague has passed. He is not playing this year, unless it’s garbage time. Our head coach Wooden knows of all of Teague’s deficiencies. You all are panicking. You think i win grand slams if i panic? No. You stay with your strengths, what got you 53 wins.
Count it, 53 wins, number 3 seed in the east, with Bibby as the point guard. Now again this is for people like Wabe who seem to like to repeat themselves, Teague is not NBA ready. He needs to go to the minors and get experience. The kid fouls, can not shoot straight, and is a turnover waiting to happen.
Is Bibby a bad defender? Is Atlanta summer hot? Of-course he is bad. But look at his +/-, it usually is in the + column. That is what head coach wooden sees. Bibby is stable, shoots, and rarely turns the ball over.
ok, all together, we need a true center.

Northcyde,
I am a teague fan, but I agree with u. If Jennings is having his way, and teague is not getting the job done, then get him outta there.
That being said, if I’m woody, I would consider starting Teague (in game 6). That way, he is out there with the starters to help him out, giving Jennings (and skiles ) a different look.
And teague will help us get out and run, which is what we do best.
Plus Nelson lit up the bobcats, and if he continues to play at that level, then he will light bibby up too. So its possible teague could help us next round too.
But that’s why I blame woody for not giving teague more burn during the regular season. If he had, I don’t think teague would be such a liability.

no one is saying teague is the answer…but what we are doing now is not working. jennings is not the only problem, but he and ridenour are creating lot’s of opportunities for the other shooters by driving the lane, dribbling around the court until he finds the open man or shoots the layup. different looks and speed will help. In game two, jj harassed jennings into multiple turnovers. He did not make a difference in that game, and it began with going after his little punk a**.Same with salmons. His fall away jumper is so scripted, drive the lane, fall away for an easy jumper. When he is aggressively defensed, his shot is consistently off. Just tired of seeing wide open threes with nobody within ten feet of the shooter. I bet if you let teague get into the game, he will produce for you, and if not, hell, pull him.He can’t have more turnovers than bibby has in the last few games(if someone is guarding him tight, he is ineffective.only deadly when wide open.)biby has been a real nightmare the last two games handlng the ball. i agree with O’brien, if teague is not ready, shame on woodson for wasting him this season. tired of first round picks not producing(except Horford)
Get Physical with these jokers, let some of the second team deliver some meaningful fouls that will send a message(no frickin layups) and get out and run. delfino did us in because everyone is chasing flippin jennings as he dribbles for days, and then delfino or anyone else is wide open. And for goodness sake marvin, play some ball, get a rebound, something. I would rather see you foul out than Horford. at least horford will take it inside with authority.

For one, Teague should have gotten a lot more minutes during the regular season so that he’d be ready to play significant minutes come playoff time.
Probably should have played Mario 5-10 min instead of 1 min a game if nothing else he could wear down their ball-handlers w/ his swarming defense.
Since we know the Bucks are under-sized w/o Bogut I would go w/ a 3 guard line-up rotating between Joe, Mo, Bibby, Teague, & Mario. I would have Teague or Mario in the game whenever Jennings is on the court & tell them that their responsibility is to guard Jennings. Don’t worry about Offense, look to get the ball to Joe, Al, or Smoove.
Being able to rotate between Teague & Mario is great, b/c when U play the kind of D that I want them to play on Jennings U will get called for some fouls.

You want Thomas taking that shot because he cant make enough to beat you . Does anyone think Thomas would go for 30-40 from the Elbow ?
All you have to do is to have AL and Smoove to show on the screen and roll and then get back to there man and allow the guards time to recover . The responsibility is on the guards to keep working hard to recover to there man . of course jennings will hit a few shots but over the long haul it takes away the special match ups that they have been trying to exploit .
I just find it amazing that Woody is claiming to be protecting them without even giving them a chance at first . I have a feeling that pride would click in with the two veteran point guards and we would get some positive results . What coach protects me from a point guard by matching me up with a guy usually 6 inches taller and 40 lbs bigger lol .
Woody simply is under the belief that oohhh we have so many guys similar in size that we can just switch everything and confuse the offense but the fact is that the switching is predictable and thats why it doesnt work .
Could someone please tell me when was the last time with as much as we switch that we sprung a surprise trap on someone ?
One possession we should switch
next possession we surprise and trap the ballhandler all together on the pick and roll
next possession we play it straight up and the guard goes over the top of the screen
next possession the big shows hard and forces the guard to turn away from the basket and to take it towards the sideline until the guard recovers
Salmons is averaging 20 ppg on 50% shooting and has gotten to the line 18 times while only making ONE 3pt shot this entire series . Maybe we should hide whoever is guarding him and let Bibs and Craw play Jennings straight up

Zaza was playing the switch like how the Hawks used to play it 3 years ago. He follows the guard off the screen for about a second or two, then switches back to find his man, while the original defender picked up the guard up top.
But with Horford, he’s not switching back. He’s staying with the guard.

We can’t stop Jennings, but his teammates are missing all kinds of shots.
Waiting for a dose of that mental toughness this team is supposed to have.
Not seeing that Joe Johnson “supernova” explosion of take-over-the-game type of play. I don’t think we’re going to see that, but I’ll settle for a second half of him shooting better than 50%, and some screens set so he can actually take open shots.
Skinny 3 point lead at the half.

you can yell loud as u want, even if u were sitting next to woody,he would not hear u nor would he stop the switching..
I like the pass that josh threw to horford to end the half..it showed me 2 things.
1.josh is trying to open up our fast break game and catch them napping after made baskets, cause its been there all series long..
2.he wants to play aggresive and i think we got them there..
skiles threw the wrinkle in against us by playing both ridenhour and jennings together..that gave them the advantage when we switch on defense..
trust me,he only threw it in (skiles with the 2 speedy guards)for a minute in the 1st half.
and in the 2nd half and in game 6 on friday we will see tons of it..
we need and inside game coming out in the 3rd..
we need to back to marvin attacking the basket..
josh getting passes as he is cutting towards the basket..
horford 5 feet and closer before he even gets the ball thrown his way..
bibby driving and kicking out to joe for the drive or the 3 ball..
and if anyone of those plays are contested before we shoot, then, kick out to bibbs near the 3 point line..and every offensive shot must be met with us pounding the boards for any offensive rebounds..

Despite all of the whining and complaining ( mainly based on the first 6 minutes of the game ), the Hawks have been very good defensively tonight. They’re closing out better, not totally switching every play, and reboundng the basketball.
Just need for JJ to stop selling us out a little bit, and the rest of the team to mimimize the turnovers.
Keep this defensive effort up in the 2nd half, and we’ll pull this game out . . even if the offense is ugly.

True. You make a valid point.
But, I know of all people, you remember some of the same criticism J.Smith took when he was developing. He was probably one of the most criticized players on the roster up until this season.
I get the comparison. It makes sense.
But, I personally don’t blame those who come off a bit hard on Marvin. The guy showcases his abilities every now and then, so we know he’s capable of these types of nights. I just question the guys focus and self-esteem. It’s hard to understand why he’s so up and down.

all the blame on Joe if we lose?
pfff.. are you serious? what plays were we running there… Joe just did what he always does.. try to drive and find a teammate or finish. out of an iso… the defender just made a play, b/c it was predictable.
*****************
Bigdave . . . we’ve been running ISO-JJ for 5 years. He’s the captain and the leader of this team. No way in hell can he self-destruct like that. Either shoot the damn ball, or pass the damn ball. But don’t turn it over like that. He officially took 1 SHOT in the 4th quarter. But those 3 turnovers were killers. Then he backs off of Salmons on a 3 . . and fouls Jennings on a jumper with the shot clock running down?
And that ish is on Woody?
And you know I’m one of the biggest JJ supporters around . . and still am.
But you have to call ish like it is. He self destructed big time toward the end of that game. He has to take FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS.
This is his team . . he can’t melt down like that. He’s been in that situation hundreds of times. That’s the worst meltdown I’ve ever seen out of him.
Now he REALLY has to go “supernova” in Game 6, because no one believes now that the Hawks can pull this out.
It’ll be a shame if that’s how his last game in ATL ended. So now, he must atone for that ish on Friday night.

JJ: 6-16
Crawford: 4-18.
It’s hard to win like that when 2 of our best shooters shoot that bad. Why was JJ and Crawford taking that many shots anyway? Either way, we don’t have any offensive system, so we tighten up when the game gets close.
northcyde,
When Dirk (who was MVP that year) played like crap against Golden State, most people still blamed Avery Johnson. And Avery deserved a lot of blame because he made the crucial mistake of changing his lineup to match Golden State. But he basically got all the blame nonetheless.
My point is, its always easier to replace a coach, because you cannot replace your star player, no matter how he self-destructs.
And we cannot replace JJ. Woody, on the other hand…

Change the team name to the Tin Men. If they only had a heart … This time of year, it takes mental and physical toughness (Spurs, Jazz, Celtics) and the Hawks are again exposed as a soft team in both areas. Time to rework this roster and bring in some harda$$ guys who can dish it out in the blocks. And a coach who will instill that toughness.

I know we Hawks fans are shocked. The way they played tonight and the last two games at Milwaukee has exposed this team as a “Nothing”. sure, they can come back to win the series, but since they play with no heart, can we just say the Bucks can play Orlando. I just hate to see us go up to Mil. and look terrible on Friday. By the way, that place is going to be rocking Friday night, nothing like Atlanta has ever seen. By the first quarter, the Hawks will be toast!!!!! Well, maybe next year. I hop;e I am wrong, but this team has no heart. What happen to Joe “I shot about 30 times a game” Johnson?

Looks awfully easy from the couch, you insolent fools. In three years when you’ve gotten the coach fired (because that’s so EASY), and the team is struggling to make it to .500 in fits and starts because it’s not all that darn easy to put a team together, you’ll can kick back and be real proud of the moment when ol’ Woody got fired because year-over-year improvement in the regular season standings, and year-over-year improvement with one setback in the playoffs just wasn’t good enough.

The Defense is the Main problem, but AL taking 21 shots is terrible. The Hawks played LAZY selfish ball tonight. AL screamed at Josh for that 3, but he wouldnt pass out of the double team for nothing. Hawks make one 3 pointer not counting the Al bank shot. Bibby gave NOTHING nada zelch and was Benched. Why not the same for Jamal?? He is a FA also that is LOOKING for big money this offseason. Maybe with that 6th man award he tanked knowing that will get him paid this off season. The Hawks dont run plays not because they dont have them, the players REFUSE to run them. A ZONE woould help the WEAK defenders more than that DAMN SWITCHING. This game could be a blessing in that it will make these guys come together and win on the road OR the damage has been done and a BLOWUP is in order.

Its not Wooddy’s fault people. He’s not out on the court playing defense. The main mistake he made was not playing his bench enough. Bibby cannot guard anyone. If Teague had a jumpshot, he would get more minutes

We might get rid of Woody, but we’re stuck with Marvin, Bibby. and Zaza, for 11 more years combined. Yikes!

There goes that home court that Woody kept talking about. Now, maybe he’ll take this more seriously and play to win not play to not lose. I was very disappointed in Joe. I think his fustrations with the non foul calls made him get the best of him but you can’t lead from the bench. And I just don’t get Jamal. He’s been almost a complete waste in these playoffs. I expected much more from him. That being said, I don’t see the Bucks winning four straight games so this thing goes to 7. But they need to get their “ish” together.

Wabe,
His answer was …”well, Iso has been a good thing for us and we’ve won a lot of games that way”
It’s just like Mrs.Sautee said at midseason:
Joe’s really good but he’s not NEARLY as good as Woody THINKS he is”

Can we please stop with all the multiple lines of “FIRE WOODY”.
First of all, the series is not over, and second of all, you can say “Fire Woody” in one line, like Clyde does.

Well, O’brien , he could be a model teammate and just say “JJ lost his composure and left us out on the floor by ourselves by fouling out” …..or….”Jamal proved to be anything but a Sixth Man of the Year down the stretch, and failed us completely”
Would that be better?

This game is on every player. the shot selection under the last 4 minutes were atrocious!! We played erratic like we were down by nine instead of up by nine.
JT0 gets one minute of burn time, has a great defensive stop and thats it???!!
No true point guard to create shots for every one else….blah blah blah. The same ole problems. Josh Smith looked lost. Like this was his first time in the playoffs. He did fair but he looked like his mind was somewhere else.
FIRE WOODY…..FIRE ASG……..STILL FIRE MARVIN!!!!..He will suck in game 6!

Even if he does have that much faith in JJ, why does it always have to be off the dribble?
Run the guy off some screens, get him some open looks when we need to drain some shots.
But, instead, we rely on playground tactics. Get the ball to the best player and hope his dribbling act pulls us through. Let him play hero.

Not a totally shocking result Wednesday night . . . Hawks trash the opposing team’s city (Milwaukee) . . . . and all the AJC writers, etc., predict a sweep or easy Hawks win in the series . . . perfect motivation to inspire the Bucks to play harder and win . . . remember, always “respect your opponent”. Bucks are playing very good basketball right now, too. Atlanta out-coached, outplayed and out-hustled. It ain’t over . . . but methinks it’s over. Bucks win in six.

I said this would happen and cats on this blog murked me ……. Nevertheless, the series is definitely over now. Bye Woody and Joe. See you next season at the end of the bench Marvin and Bibby. And I’ve come to the conclusion that we may have to talk trading Josh Smith while his stock is still high around the league. He’s an athletic beast, but his basketball IQ is extremely low. He should be able to net us a pure, serviceable center along with a solid point guard … damn Hawks, just damn!

I am so sick of hearing people talk about Teague and his damn jump shot.
Look, what does having a jump shot do for the defensive end of the floor? Mike Bibby and his wonderful jump shot gave us what for nearly 27 minutes?
Stop being irretrievably stupid and recognize things for what they are: Teague doesn’t get played because Woody planned it that way.
Brandon Jennings has WHAT kind of jumper? The kid shot 37% for the year, yet he stayed on the court while Luke Ridnour (actually a better shooter than Jennings) came off the bench. Jennings gets many of his points because he’s quick and gets to the bucket.
Wow, sounds just a bit like Jeff Teague. This logic DOES NOT WORK. We don’t have a backup point guard because we refused to develop one, plain and freaking simple.

thats b/c they have been taught that things subtleties like energy, effort, etc win at the pro level. not so fast not, in the playoffs where you actually have to execute… see those are keys to success on the college level. you never hear hardcore execution or x’s and o’s, and anything skill based discussed. why, b/c they have been looking the other way on that. taught things like play hard.. and elementary stuff like that. you can tell by the skill level of our players. our bigs are just taught to give effort, and energy. while there skill suffers. Al cant score.. Josh cant score.. Marvin cant score.. and these guys have the natural ability to be polished but they arent.. they’ve given all they got under this guy. this man has had some talent come through here. guys that thrived at the college level. good guys, who work hard. get here and there careers are done. why.. cause the man cant teach them anything.. he likes vets cause they are already developed players, and as you’ve witnessed relies on them heavily.

Just as stupid is the ignorant comments about Josh Smith’s IQ.
“He’s no superstar, but he wants to take superstar shots.”
Really? So what’s your explanation for Joe Johnson (fouls out after shooting 6 for 16) and Jamal Crawford (shoots 4 for 18), and the fact that Josh averaged more assists per game than our starting point guard in the regular season, and has tied with him in the playoffs.
Josh taking shots like this towards the end of the game is what HAPPENS when your SUPERSTAR has fouled out, and your second best scorer shoots 4 for 18!

The Bucks played spirited,,hard defense the entire game. That’s why they won. The Hawks were up by 13 at one point, 9 late in the game, yet it just disintegrated, just enough to put the game out of reach, sort of like some other games. Part of a coach’s job is to prevent meltdowns like this. (Or better yet, coach a team to play spirited, intelligent defense the entire game .
Really great to watch the Hawks’ approach to “playoff basketball.” The Hawks play tough, making hard, unneccessary fouls. The Bucks play tough, cutting off avenues of approach and making shots difficult.
A lot has been said on this blog about how this is Woody’s team and how Woodson has improved the team, etc. The main perpetrators of this fantasy are Mary B and NorthClyde. Tonight, it should be obvious to even these two diehard Woody fans that there is something terribly wrong with a very talented club. The only problem is Woody hung on long enough to screw up this entire year, so yeah, I’m bitter. This is my club too. .

ELITE Teams don’t lose first round playoff series. I know we haven’t lost yet, but it is all but done. The Hawks owe us an apology for their apathetic play on the court. We have spent our hard earned money to hear them complain all year about fan support, while they make millions while giving lackluster effort against quality team. Being happy about 50 wins and getting bounced in the first round is LOSER talk. Rome may not have been built in a day, but we are not even close to Rome. If Joe wants to leave…then goodbye. He is a good player, but not great. He will not lead a team to a championship. Crawford is not even close to Joe. Horford has the most heart on our team and I like Marvin’s hustle. Unfortunately, I see the team hustling backwards. Maybe you can tell that I am pissed – DISSAPPOINTED FAN.

That kid Jennings is fast and has a poor jumper. Watching Teague the last game of the year…. what if he would have been developed from the beginning. Lastly, I hope our team does not give up on them like YOU fans have! I am mad as hell, but I have to believe they can pull this thing out. They are a much better team than Milwaukee. Where are all of you WOODY LOVERS now? What good is winning 53gms and having the 3rd seed doing us now? This is why Woodson was so upset at not receiving an extension before the season. He didn’t want to be judged this season based on his ability to coach during the playoffs.
During the entire 2nd half, he basically used 6 players, which didn’t worked the last 2 times he tried it. You heard KMcHale say how teams will take on the attitude and character of their HC. Well, this team is inconsistent, makes the same stupid mistakes and ends up with the same results, and can’t explain why, just like HC Mike Woodson.

O’Brien, you took the words right out of my mouth.
How many times do we have to see the same issues go unaddressed (late game breakdowns, offense stagnates) before the coach addresses it?
Despite all of the 4th quarter struggles, we’ve seen absolutely no tactical changes. We STILL approach every problem with the same set of solutions. Despite all of the leads we’ve blown, we still rely on ISO-ball to close out games. Despite all of the criticism pointed at the Hawks lack of offensive chemistry, we continue to exercise the same approach on offense?
As someone said earlier, I think it was Melvin, Woodson is a one-trick pony.

Arthur Blank is not a Sports man. He’s having a hard enough time with the Falcons. I am a season ticket holder for the Falcons too. Sometimes I am disappointed in them too. At least they play hard. I’m not giving up on the Hawks, but it’s sure hard to have faith after seeing a performance like tonight. Woodson deserves credit for improving this team. I do agree with Blue that we need money to pay for a superstar. Lenny Wilkens said that he did not like coaching superstars, but superstars combined with the right role players win championships. Atlanta has one team with a championship, the Braves. I would challenge anyone on this blog to tell me that they believe that the Hawks are moving closer to one. We have to figure this out. It’s strange that teams can be in the gutter and rise to be ELITE teams, but we cannot. It annoys me that ESPN ignores us, sports radio doesn’t discuss us. It’s like we are the on 50 win team that doesn’t exist. Many people will say that they aren’t surprised if we lose this round. I will have to endure the jeers tomorrow at work because everybody knows how I feel about the Hawks and are waiting to say “I told you so”.

Can you read? Yes or no?
I said that Josh Smith taking shots at the end of the 4th quarter is what you get when you don’t have somebody better to take them. Who was supposed to get the ball? Joe Johnson? He fouled out. Jamal Crawford? 4-18. What “superstar” was supposed to be taking the shot right then, tell me that? I’m not saying it was a smart shot. But it’s funny, if it’s a made shot, is it still stupid?
Jamal 4-18
JJ 6-16
How many of those shots were smart? How about the three straight misses by Joe, two of them 3 point attempts at all the wrong time? Huh? What? No answer? I’m listening….
Venom Spitter ,
I know he doesn’t make all of the smartest plays, but no way is he the dumbest guy on the team. I just don’t agree. Josh makes too many good plays that really help this team for that to be the case. I’m not making excuses for what he did tonight. Did his play overall do us any worse than our top two scorers?
You take one or two 4th quarter gaffes and turn them into “the guy is dumb as a box of rocks” conclusion. Yeah, okay. I guess we would have won 60 games without him, huh. Trade him away. Then watch us give up more points than the New Jersey Nets.

I see all of the NBA TV analysts are still picking the Hawks in 7. I think all the talent is there, but there needs to be an obvious change in coaching. I suggest a more gritty, hard-nosed coach because these guys are not discplined at all. Apparently, there are too many chiefs and not enough indians. Who’s the blame for that? Woody, of course. The last press conference he said that he didn’t mind the bickering. That’s a problem. People bicker when they don’t know their roles and that is obvious from watching Joe getting into shouting matches with several of his teammates the last three games. I think that all of the love and biased writing from local reporters have got some of these players feeling themselves and it’s time that everyone checked their egos and started playing as a team. This has really gotten out of hand.

Another home loss where it is tight in the 4th quarter and we fail yet again to score 20 points in the final stanza. Look at all our home losses against the elite teams this year and you see the same pattern. We melt down offensively in crunch time against the good teams. The flaw showed itself again tonight. There is no “go to” guy or leader on this team in crunch time…someone to settle things and get us a good shot….Horford was about the closest we had…Joe fouled out and allowed himself to be taken out of his game while he was in there…Jamal kept hitting the front rim a sure sign he was feeling the pressure…Josh never takes it to the hole when it counted…where was that fire we played with against Boston a couple of years back…spells doom on Friday night.

We have the only “coach” in the league that truly believes that his 4’s and 5’s can check 1’s and 2’s on the perimeter!! I mean doesn’t that effectively take away our size advantage on the post when our big men are trying to check guards out on the perimeter. Doesn’t that take away from our rebounding. Doesn’t that negate Josh Smith’s shot blocking help defense in the paint?
How can our “superstar” end the game on the bench, fouled out, with 13 points?
How many times did “coach” ignore the isolation post play with Rignour trying to match Marvin Williams?
Hey “coach” wasn’t Marvin our hot man. When we went through a scoring drought of Iso-Joe’s did you not have a play to get Marvin the ball? Maybe Horford the ball in the post?
Hey “Coach” what is our offensive identity by the way? Bet on a run out off a defensive play?
Hey “Coach” since game 3 have you not recognized that Skiles has made an adjustment against your collegiate switching D?
Hey “Coach”….”Coach”???? Anybody home? Guess you’ve gone fishing… for some reason you seem to always checkout in crunch time. I know where our players get it from!!

Salmons comes through in crunch time because his coach doesn’t make him play 1-on-5.

The one big game in which Marvin steps up and plays his azz off, he sits on the bench for half the fourth quarter while Jamal Crawford, who has struggled THIS ENTIRE SERIES, is shooting brick after brick.

This team most likely will not have Woodson, JJ, Mo Evans, moving Jamal to start. There goes the bench. There goes the overall team defense.. Thats probably top 3 worst defensive backcourts in the league

For the past five games, I’ve been screaming for Woodson to run a rotating tandem of Teague and West at Jennings from the second Jennings touchs the ball.
By the fourth quarter, Jennings would be toast. Instead, Woodson just lets the guy walk down the court with the ball unmolested.
This isn’t rocket science. I guess Woodson failed science or had someone lese take the test for him. What an idiot.
Oh yeah, FIRE WOODY!

The Hawks lack definitive leadership. Talent is nothing without drive, consistency, and one total commitment to winning. The Hawks passion to fight for every inch, and personal sacrifice, is disgrace to the many thousands of fans which has support them for years. To watch them in person or on television is mentally exhausting. Their constantly trying which worth is equal to Practice. How does it feels to be stealing from fans throughout Georgia and other regions around the world? Get your (ACT) together. From upper management to all players in the organization, PUT OUT, or MOVE ON. P.S. for management (Hit the NBA circuit find a Tough, unyielding, direct, LEADER).

Let me ask some of you a question:
What did the Bucks do, scheme-wise in those final 4 minutes, to help them get a victory?
A: NOT A DAMN THING
*************
They won that game, simply because the players kept scrapping and they made plays.
- Salmons taking a standstill 3 and making it, because JJ backed off of him
- Drawing an offensive foul ( charge ) from JJ on that out of control drive
- Jennings doing a Chauncey Billups-esque pump fake on JJ, to draw a foul . . 21 feet away from the basket
- Salmons drive to get to the FT line as the shot clock was winding down
- Ilyasova getting to a missed FT before Smoove ( because Smoove didn’t box him out )
- Ilyasova taking /nd making an early in the shot clock standstill 3, which was the DAGGER, because it put them up 4
Those are all either heads-up plays . . or hustle plays . . plays that their PLAYERS made. Meanwhile, we’re running into people, blowing wide open lay-ups, taking wild jumpshots, and ironically . . looking like a (( bleepin )) deer in headlights.
And I’m pizzed at JJ for what he DIDN’T do.
You CANNOT take 1 or 2 shots total in the 4th quarter of a playoff game. I don’t care if he was having a bad shooting game. or not. He’s the floor leader in that situation. Get your damn shots up or get to the line. But don’t defer. Don’t play that passive ish like you played during last playoffs.
And those defensive breakdowns . . . wow. I expect that from Mike Bibby, not JJ. For all the good JJ did in that 3rd quarter to help build the lead, he was a huge culprit in the disentegration of that lead.
As for Woody . . my stance has always been that you can’t solely give credit to the players if we win, but solely blame Woody if we lose. Woody has a hand in ALL LOSSES, but so do these players. When you see a team make mistake after mistake coming down the stretch of games, you have to put some of that on the players.
A lot of it actually. Especially the mental errors.
Damn . . and it’s a full moon out tonight too?
This was a Rex Grossman, Jake Delhomme type moment.

The fat lady is warming up and not just for this series. Short of getting a big free agent that the ASG has so far proven unwilling or unable to pay for, you may as well get ready for another “rebuilding” period.

If we’ve learned anything this season, especially during this playoff series, it’s that HC Mike Woodson isn’t going to change anything about the way he coaches. He’s proven in this series alone that he’ll let this team go down the drain before admitting his halfcourt/ISO OFF and switching DEF just aren’t working. If Bibby isn’t scoring(2PTS), isn’t creating easy scoring opportunities for others(2ASSISTS), isn’t playing any form of recognizable DEF(which is his signature), and you desperately need DEF, why would you play him 27mins and your quickest, fastest and best on the ball defender only (1)ONE min?
I’ve called Woodson stupid, moron, dumbass etc, for not making needed OFF and DEF adjustments. But you know what, I don’t think he has any adjustment options in place that he can go to, so he just stands on the sidelines barking at the officials while leaving it in the hands of his players to do whatever they can, and routinely blames them if they fail.
Therefore, if the DEF shuts down his limited OFF, the players are left to their own devices, and end up resorting to sandlot ISO’s, no ball movement and no accountability or intervention whatsoever from Woodson. HC MIKE WOODSON HAS BEEN EXPOSED. Isn’t it odd that Woodson has complete control over what DEF we play, and stubbornly insists on playing one that’s getting us killed, but appears to have absolutely no control over how we run our OFF.
In the 4th quarter of gms, I have no doubt certain players are tired, literally and figutively, and sick of being left out to dry and blamed for everything that’s not working, especially when their halfcourt OFF has no built in options for them to work with. Let’s face it, the fate of this franchise won’t be based on whether JJ resigns or not. It will be based on GM RSund decision on HC MWoodson.
Over the last 5yrs, Woodson has screwed every rookie drafted, and over the last 3yrs he’s screwed every FA’s we’ve signed except Flip Murray and Jamal Crawford. The only way we’re going to get veteran players is through trades, and if they have good seasons we won’t be able to retain most of them when their contract runs out.
We’ve already seen JJ’s resolve when he wants out, and he was in a far, far better situation in Phoenix than he’s in now. He’s gone people, and so is JoSmith and likely MEvans. Look, it JJ leaves, and we get rid of Woodson, we can still do as well as we did this yr. I believe a new HC with a more modern OFF/DEF philosophy and system will allow us to get more production out of Marvin. Bench Bibby and sign or draft a SG that plays DEF, then try to resign RMorris, MEvans, and/or JChildress as our starting SF. A bench with Zaza, Bibby, MEvans, RMorris, JCrawford and MWilliams ain’t bad at all.

Sooooo disappointed in last nights lost. I may sound crazy for this, because if you have an opportunity to win a championship, you go for it. With that being said, I believe Joe’s fourth quarter meltdown was all apart of the plan. If we made it to the Eastern conference champions or potentially to the Finals, would Rick Sund FIRE WOODY? I highly doubt that the hawks organization would do that. These players know they won’t go anywhere with Woody. the plan is on, we will lose to the Bucks! if woody goes then JJ stays. these players recognize the lack of talent they have as a coach.
Woody's the man!

To keep woody happy, the hawks better step up with some big time cash—a raise and a big bonus for getting this young team to the playoffs without a legitimate big name superstar. If not, he may get mad and take the Philadelphia job. The hawks owners need to spend some money to get D-Wade next year to increase scoring.

With Jennings penetrating and running circles around the Hawks’ defense, will someone please explain to me how Woodson can justify playing Teague :05 and 1:28 respectively during the past two games? Woodson’s inability to develop rookies and make in-game adjustments are reason enough for him to be gone.
