– So which one of these teams is the experienced playoff group? Which one has a rookie running point? Which squad has guys who don’t seem to know it’s going to be more physical in the playoffs, especially on the road?
– “It is frustrating, man,” J.J. said. “It just seems like we don’t have the toughness. They were coming up with all the loose balls, and all the big rebounds. We couldn’t get stops when we needed to. It’s killing us.”
– The Hawks competed better in Game 4 than in Game 3 but it’s not like they could be much worse in that regard. They couldn’t overtake the Bucks because rookie Brandon Jennings had his way with them.
– Jennings has figured out the Hawks’ switching defense. If he wasn’t making jumpers, he was slithering to the rim to score. If he wasn’t doing that, he was dropping it off in the paint for teammates. And if that wasn’t there, the Bucks worked the ball around the perimeter, where Delfino inevitably was standing wide open to catch a pass for a 3.
– The Bucks worked over the Hawks. “Jennings has such quickness that when we get out on him he opens up stuff for his shooters,” Jamal said. “He gets around one person, he keeps his dribble, Delfino was getting shots Salmons was getting shots, Stackhouse was getting shots Ilyasova was getting shots. I think the penetration is hurting us a little bit.”
– More than a little bit. “It’s been tough because we switch a lot and they just get pretty much any penetration they wanted,” J.J. said. “They got us helter skelter, to where we are scrambling trying to find guys, and now we are at a disadvantage.”
– Is it time for the Hawks to adjust their defensive approach of switching all the time? “I don’t know,” Joe said. “I am sure we will come up with something. We have just got to get back playing with energy. They are getting layup after layup, you can’t have that in playoff basketball.”
– But this wasn’t about a lack of energy by the Hawks. They played hard, for the most part. It was about Jennings, Ridnour, Salmons and Delfino doing a much better job finding holes against the switches than they did in Games 1 and 2 and the Hawks sticking with the strategy.
– It’s not working. “I haven’t got my shot blocked as much,” Jennings said with a smile, referring to how he recklessly and ineffectively attacked the rim in Game 2. “I think just making smart decisions and learning as the series goes on and just moving the ball. We are a better team when everyone is moving the ball and touching the ball.”
– I didn’t get a chance to ask Woody if he’s considering adjusting the defensive strategy. If he doesn’t, I don’t see how Jennings, Ridnour, Salmons and Delfino don’t continue to take advantage.
– After it looked like Woody had the advantage in the first two games, Scott Skiles has taken it back. In this game, he went deep in his bench, got the Bucks sharing the ball and got something from everyone. “That’s pretty much our formula,” he said. “We need everybody to play as well that we can get. We’re not afraid to leave them out there during critical minutes.”
– The Bucks were better than the Hawks, and they were tougher, too. Yes the Bucks, especially Kurt Thomas , were getting away with holding, moving screens, and pushes. It took too long for the Hawks to respond in kind.
– “We know what to expect,” J.J. said. “We have got to stop complaining so much. We worry about them holding and scratching and clawing. We have just got to do the same thing. Stop worrying about what the refs are calling, and just play. We complain way too much.”
– The Hawks should have been mad about the way the Bucks got to the rim at will. Milwaukee shot 55 percent and scored 44 points in the paint, for crying out loud. In the playoffs. “We had too many breakdowns on the perimeter,” Smoove said. “Guys had to help and they knocked down jump shots. We had poor rotations and kept leaving Delfino at the 3-point line.”
– All of that is true but Josh isn’t blameless. I saw him watching guys score at the rim instead of challenging shots. He was back to being weak on closeouts. When J.J. was talking about guys complaining too much about calls, Smoove has to be at or near the top of the list.
– “We can’t let that get the best of us,” Jamal said. “A call is a call, it can’t be changed. You just have to go out there and compete.”
– Josh insisted he wasn’t frustrated about the physical play. “I was straight,” Smoove said. “People were not helping each other out and not communicating. That’s really why I was frustrated.”
– While the Bucks were getting easy shots, the Hawks were jacking up jumpers. They occasionally worked the inside-out game but there wasn’t much flow for long stretches of the game. “We are not being aggressive,” Joe said. “We are just sitting back on our heels. They are attacking, and we are just kind of sitting back watching.”
– The Hawks are 1-10 in postseason road games in the last three years. Haven’t these long, hard series gotten old? “I would have thought so a long time ago,” Joe said. “Obviously it hasn’t. I guess we just like going seven games. It kills us, man. We get banged up and we just get no rest.”
– The Magic swept Charlotte, by the way.
– The Hawks have won 15 straight at Philips but the Bucks have the confidence and momentum in the series. “I can’t wait until Friday to come back home and finish up the series, hopefully,” Jennings said. What does it mean for the Hawks that it sounds less like boasting, and more like a plan?
– “I still feel like there is no pressure on us,” Jennings said. “At the end of the day, everyone still expects us to lose the series. The best thing we can do is keep fighting and keep competing with them.”
– I’m out, Hawks fans.

If I hear the words “we like our core” from this moronic ownership group and GM one more time, I will puke. A good core is one like that of OKC, where there is still room to grow and put other pieces around it. This core has already maxed out it’s ability and will not sniff the finals or anything close to it.
I ask again, why the hell did we give Marvin’s duck butt a 5 year deal when nobody else wanted him? Completely inexcusable and a lazy job by Sund. I hate to say it, but we are headed for more rebuilding if JJ leaves and Marvin and Horford continue to regress.
What a pathetic organization.

Sund’s offseason moves may have helped this team during this year’s regular season, but they did nothing to bring us closer to a title. We are now hamstrung by Marvin’s contract for 4 more years, Bibby for 2 more, and Zaza for 3 more. And for what? To win 53 games, have another useless 7 game first round series, and then get blown out in the 2nd round by a superior team? Just such a disgraceful organization and ownership group. Thank god for Arthur Blank, TD, and Mike Smith. Without that group, all 4 major sports teams in this city would be massive disappointments.
Keep up the good work MC.

I think the group that took Mighty Boston to 7 games a few years ago could beat this group.
That team knew how much being in the playoffs meant, when to have fun, and when to get serious.

Mike Bibby is the determining factor to all of the teams problems. He can’t match up with his counterpart and it puts too much pressure on everyone else, killing us.
Is there a reason why Jennings dribbles around in circles when the likes of Al Horford and Pachulia play matador defense while he simply floats a shot with 3 seconds left on the clock. I can’t imagine a guy like Rondo allowing his centers out on an island like that just dying a slow death.

Bye Joe. Been fun watching you grow.
No one listens to or respects Woody.
No leadership.
Stupid stupid money spent on Marvin and Bibby. (Zaza i think is a solid backup)
Was downright embarassing. Currently living in Cleveland and friends with many Cavs fans, I had to go to a friends house to watch because it was on NBA TV. ended up having to apologize for such a poor performance. Was eye-opening to hear the other announcers talk about the immaturity of the Hawks, “get angry Josh Smith, get a technical!” There are so many things so obviously wrong about this team. Its hard to be a fan. My friends try to tell me not to get worked up over it but its frustrating. No one watches this team. If the players are going to act like they have something better to do, so are the fans.

We are built very well to succeed in the regular season when we’re playing in empty arenas, and the team needs no lift of motivation. But Woodsen just can’t seem to get these guy’s going and light a fire in them, and that is 100% his job. We’ve now seen this going on 3 straight years. Why should we expect it to change in the future? Let Woodys contract run out, and let’s part ways. We need a coach who can do some motivating. However if we can’t re-sign JJ it’s a mute point, as we’ll struggle to capture the 8 seed next season, and a sure quick departure from Cleveland, or Orlando will be our fate.
I still think we beat the Bucks in 7 due to the sole fact that we have home-court.
Orlando will dominate us. It won’t be much of a series.
And all this is coming from a die-hard Hawk fan who has supported Woody all season.

Here’s a question for y’all:
If the Hawks get to the 2nd round (which I think they will), how will they do compared to the Bobcats?
A: Worse (get swept and lose more than 1 game by 10 points)
B: Better (win at least one game)
C: Same (get swept but keep the margin within 10 points in at least 3 games)

Does anyone on the Hawks realize that Jennings is left handed. He goes left 90% of the time unless he is on the right wing. The only guy I saw trying to make him go right all night was Mo Evans.
Marvin Williams as a basketball player is a disgrace to anyone over 6′6. He gets his shot blocked by Salmons, and can’t finish with guys like Jennings back on a break.
If I see Horford or Zaza trying to defend Jennings on the perimeter one more time. Unbelievable.

I thought your team was going to smoke the Bucks. I was hoping to get the C’s instead of you guys. I thought … without Bogut, we wouldn’t have a chance! The Bucks saving grace might have been that they lost the first 2 games… nobody (including your team) thought we had a chance.
Josh Smith is an awesome player but he needs to grow up and not insult an entire city/state with his comments about Milwaukee. Maybe the Bucks have stepped up in support of their fans!?! Watching games 1 & 2 were like trying to watch somebody read a book at a library. Maybe, just maybe.. there is more to do in Atlanta than watch a team that could/will lose to a team without it’s leader (and team nobody thought would even make the playoffs). Josh, if you are reading… tell your fans to man up and go to game 5!
Here’s an idea, maybe the owners could offer a partial money back guarantee if they beat the Bucks? Oh wait, that didnt work in the past now did it! Good luck in Milwaukee when we finish the series (hopefully).

It’s time to knock Jennings on his azz when he goes to the hole. And they need to do it early in the game. Question is . . . who is tough enough to dish out a hard foul like that, without getting a flagrant?
Reading JJ’s comments didn’t give it justice. Actually seeing him comment and saying that we “don’t have the toughness”, spoke volumes about how he was feeling tonight. The way he said it, it was almost like he didn’t want to believe it, but finally realized it.
In other words . . . the Hawks are soft. A trait that most of us already knew.
People may not like this . . . but in Game 6 . . JJ may have to go SUPERNOVA for us to win. If we can’t stop the Bucks, and JJ has it going early, he needs to try to shoot for 40 points, and see if he can single-handedly rip the heart out of the Bucks.
The defense MUST IMPROVE by leaps and bounds though, regardless of what we do on offense. Even if you have to treat Jennings like he’s a star player, and double his azz, that’s what we have to do.
He’s feeling himself now, so now it’s time to punch his young azz in the mouth.
Marvin, you haven’t done anything all series, so maybe it should be YOU that dishes out the pain to Jennings.

In response to your question, Najeh, I choose option (B). Here is my reasoning:
The Bobcats had several critical problems which prevent them from having a solid chance at beating the Magic. First off, they are at a significant talent disadvantage offensively. The have a team with very few shooters, possibly the fewest shooters in the league. Their main perimeter threat is Stephen Jackson, who can be very inconsistent. Their other star player (Gerald Wallace) thrives primarily from attacking the paint, while their bigs are extremely limited offensively. Without a legitimate threat on the inside, Dwight Howard was relatively free to roam around the basket on defense during that series, which explain why he was racking up blocks at such a frequent rate. This coupled with the hard-nosed strategy by the Bobcats to attack the paint played right into the hands of Dwight while he was in the game. They did a good job of racking up quick fouls on dwight using this strategy as well, however, it did them little good, since, as I mentioned earlier, they have relatively no offensive threats on the inside, aside from Diaw (if you want to call him a true big man).
The other real achilles heal for the Bobcats was their inability to defend the perimeter against the magic’s endless array of shooters. This is what makes the Magic most dangerous, honestly, not Dwight Howard, although he is one of the reasons their perimeter offense is so potent, but the fact that 4 out of 5 guys that Orlando has on the floor at any given time can reliably known down the three ball. With a lineup that features tall, somewhat immoble men like Chandler, Mohammed, Wallace, and even Jackson (who looked a step slow chasing the magic guards), it is difficult for the Bobcats to stay in front of their men during cuts and switches while Jameer Nelson both penetrates and shoots very well. In the end, it was the three point shooting of the Magic and the inability to score by the Bobcats that got them ultimately swept.
Now, on to the Hawks. The Hawks have several advantages over the Bobcats. First and foremost, the Hawks have scorers and guards that can shoot reliably in Johnson, Crawford, and Bibby. The Hawks also have the quickness and mobility to guard Orlando’s perimeter players with Johnson, Teague (although he probably wouldn’t play much due to his offensive limitations), Evans, and even crawford. The Hawks also have the luxury of having Bigs that are versatile enough to guard a guy like Rashard Lewis on the perimeter who is typically to quick and deceptive for traditional 4’s.
Now, in terms of inside, the Hawks seemed to have finally figured out a strategy that works relatively well against Dwight Howard on offense (I’ll get to defense in a bit). Al Horford has something that most centers in this league do not: the ability to knock down the mid-range jumper and stretch the defense. Considering Al has become a deadly mid-range shooter for a big man, he can pull Dwight away from the basket on offense, which leaves the lane open for drives and limits Dwight’s ability to grab offensive rebounds. Keep in the mind that aside from Dwight Howard, the Magic have very weak interior defense, and Dwight’s rejections come mostly from help-side defense. If Dwight tries to help on a drive and leaves Al open, Al will most likely make him pay (just as he did in the last Magic-Hawks game at the Highlight Factory). If Dwight stays with Al, that leaves the lane open for much more penetration and the Hawks are quite effective at scoring in the paint. The Hawks can also expose Rashard Lewis in the post who has proven to be quite uncomfortable guarding post players with Josh Smith or Al Horford. This discussion could turn into a novel quickly, so I’m going to move on to defense now.
On defense, so many teams seem to overlook this, but I truly believe that the Magic’s biggest weapon is the three point shot, and I would rather give up a 3 than a dunk or contested shot by Dwight Howard, that is why I think it is absolutely critical to put the highest priority on defending the perimeter against the Magic. The Hawks signed their third-string backup big men for a reason, and they would do well to play Dwight straight up, regardless of whom is guarding them. Statistically, Al has done a pretty good job when defending Dwight individually in the post, and it would be foolish to gamble and double off of a three point shooter on Dwight. Follow the Charles Barkley strategy and play Dwight straight up. If the bigs get in foul trouble, there are more than enough fouls to go around with 4 centers on the team. If Dwight scores 50 and beats the Hawks single-handedly, so be it, but I don’t think he’s gifted enough offensively to do that.
Now, in terms of defending the perimeter, I would go with the following match-ups. Under no circumstances would I put Mike Bibby on Jameer Nelson. That is just a recipe for quick defeat. Joe should cover Jameer, while Marvin guards Vince Carter, and the Hawks can afford to hide mike bibby on Matt Barnes since he is clearly the Magic’s most limited offensive perimeter player. I’m not a big fan of this, but Josh would have to assigned to guard Rashard Lewis, he may not have the quickness on the perimeter to do so, but his efforts on the offensive and defensive glass help to give the Hawks an advantage in this match-up. Also, Mo Evans is versatile enough to defend just about any of the Magic’s perimeter players, which is a plus for the Hawks. Teague could get some quality minutes in this series for his defense on the quick cutting perimeter players from the Magic like JJ Redick and Nelson.
One last thing on defense, the Hawks cannot afford to use their traditional switching defense on the Magic considering this will result in easy baskets and and-1s for Dwight along with the big’s likely getting burned by some of the quick Magic guards (I can’t image Zaza trying to guard Nelson or Redick, that would be horrible). It might be effective to try a variant of that similar to the rotation scheme the Hawks used in their last meeting against the magic. However, we absolutely cannot afford to leave Dwight without a big man guarding him.
Now, I’m not saying the above strategies are full-proof or would allow the Hawks to win a series against the Magic ( I honestly think the Magic are the best team in the league right now, far better than cleveland, overall), but provided that this scheme is followed and the Hawks play to their strengths and take advantage of the transition game and the points in the paint, I think the Hawks could at least win one game in that series.
Of course, I doubt woody would use the scheme mentioned above. I’m not putting him down or anything like that, but the adjustments mentioned above seem to risque for Woodson considering his determined approach to stick with what the Hawks have done in the past.
I hope you enjoyed this novel.

At any rate, your comments are sensible, for the most part. Hey Hawks Fans, I personally APOLOGIZE if there are any BUCKS TROLLS on your boards.
They don’t represent the full Milwaukee fan base and should know better since our franchise is still on life support and can still leave the city without a new arena and/or owner. I’m always curious to how the media and fans report and react to our victories, but I do my best not to comment because I HATE trolls on our boards so I give respect to get respect. These people TROLLING and trying to hype up “tying” a series are probably not real Bucks Fans but bandwagon fans that came on board once the Bucks became good. We couldn’t even sell out our opening night game THIS YEAR or last year, so I’m surprised that we suddenly have a FEAR THE DEER nation that is 1 million strong and bragging on other people’s boards.
Great series so far and once again…I’m sorry for the Trolls and let you know that our core fan base don’t mean any disrespect even after Josh disrespected our town. It’s all good because I can attack the player without attacking the people.

Until the Hawks figure out how to get stops (i.e. turn up the D) they are going to see the score run up on them. People, Skiles has found our Achilles Heel. He is exploiting it early and often. Brandon Jennings is making everyone forget about Michael Redd. We may be able to get him in the off-season.
Once again to quote a line in a recent movie “You know what? We are in trouble” and the coaching staff has not figured out a way to counter it. One of the analysis said that the biggest problem was that the players are not executing what the coaches have drawn up. Well, duh! When that happens most coaches will bring in others to try to find something that works. We had our most productive night but could not get stops. Why are we not using Joe Smith and maybe even Collins to send the message that if you come down the lane, you are going to regret it. Let them get banged up. Right now the switching defense is not working. How many times are you going to leave Delfino wide open in the corner with nobody within 10 feet? Jennings keeps going to his left and down the lane without anyone coming over. Marvin’s and Bibby’s defense consist of turning around and tell Al and Smoove, here he comes.
It wasn’t until the last 6 minutes of the 4th quarter did they figure out a way to curtail Salmons. They better come out on fire Wednesday night because if they lose, I doubt they will win on Friday. It wasn’t until last night that I realized the Bucks organization did not even sell game 6 tickets because even THEY did not believe there would be a game 6.
As Jamaal pointed out at the press conference the Celtics went to 7 games with us and then went on to win the title and the Lakers went to 7 games with their first round opponent and went on to win the championship. I have grown up watching both of those teams face adversity and succeed, go through transitions of players and coaches and still play well and lose games and come back and win in a series. The Hawks are no Lakers or Celtics.

Whoever wins game 5 is going to take this series I think. I thought the Hawks were going to sweep us after game 1 due to the inside dominance. I think the Hawks problem is that they are not going to Horford enough (foul trouble kept him limited in game 4). Would have been nice to see Bogut play the Hawks. We might have swept you guys with him based on the games played so far. However saying that the Hawks should win in 6-7 based on talent alone.
Not to Bones— Tough talk from a fan who should know that this series should be 3-1 or 4-0. The Magic would and will dismantle both of these teams. I think the Hawks future would be best to lose this series and pick up a better draft pick. Theres no possible way the Hawks can beat the Magic.

“I wish I knew,” he said. “It’s been that way against the Cleveland Cavaliers. It’s been a close game in the fourth and we can’t seem to find any offense.”
LOL so Woodson still has NOT figured out how to beat the Knicks, Magic (besides that one game), and now the Cavs. This guy DOES NOT MAKE ADJUSTMENTS FROM GAME TO GAME. You HEARD Hubie and Jon Barry say it last night — we lost the exact same way last night we did the 2 previous times vs. Cleveland. Look at those Orlando losses — same thing.
WOODY DOES NOT MAKE ADJUSTMENTS. He DOES NOT “give a !@#$ about the offense” and that shows when we go ice cold in the 4th quarter.
We were OUTREBOUNDED BY 19 WITHOUT Shaq and Varejao (who is an absolute PEST on the glass) playing. Where was Collins to guard Ilgauskas?
This is a !@#$ing joke. This is NOT an elite team. Cleveland is so physical and they go for rebounds. We settle for these !@#damn jumpshots, DON’T box out, and we have NO OFFENSIVE PLAN — JUST A FEW TALENTED SCORERS.
This is the BEST and most accurate post I’ve made on here.
FIRE MIKE WOODSON
We all know Woodson and Marvin suck, but Marvin is at least a serviceable defender (good, but not great).
However, what will ultimately lead to our demise in the playoffs is the fact that Bibby CANNOT guard anyone in this league. What this means is that Woodson, who already has stiff rotations, will give Bibby few minutes against the quicker PGs (which is every other starting and bench PG in this league), Crawford will get burnt out play 38 minutes at PG every night, and we will therefore suffer.
I SAID BEFORE THE SEASON BIBBY HAD TO LOSE WEIGHT AND GET QUICKER BUT HE IS OBVIOUSLY OUT OF SHAPE. LOOK AT HIS UPPER BODY. HE HAS NO SPEED AND CAN TAKE NO POINT GUARDS OFF THE DRIBBLE. ALSO, HE CANNOT STAY IN FRONT OF ANYONE, NOR DOES HE TRY

Explain to me why we have to pay Marvin 8 million a year until 2014, Bibby 6 million and Haha 5 million until 2012? Rick Sund is an idiot. Trade Josh Smith, he’s a mental liability on the court. Never know when he’s going to disregard all basketball knowledge and start trying to bank outside jumpers.

northcyde,
The problem for the Hawks, is even if JJ goes for 40, we still need to do a better job on defense. Thats 2 straight games where the Bucks have taken advantage of the switching defense (Samuel, where you at?), and it does not look like we made any adjustments.
The Bucks were one of the worst shooting teams in the league, but yet they shot over 50% both games. And when we did get a stop, we couldn’t get a score.
Woody and the players continue to say “we have to figure it out” or “we have to play with more energy”. But its more than that. I also think the Hawks are soft. Too many easy buckets. The best foul of the night was when the Bucks had a 3 on 1 advantage, and JJ made sure they didnt get the layup.
Those are the kind of fouls we need our guys to commit. All year, we’ve been giving up points in the paint, so its no surprise to see it continue in the playoffs. More than anything, we have to tighten on D.

This is bad. The Hawks are in major trouble. I do not think they will win this series.
Just like you all have already said, the defense is awful. And, like so many of you have said, Woodson did nothing to adjust to it. But, when you have Josh Smith just standing around and watching all the time, does it really matter?
Besides the defense, there was a two possession stretch with around 7 minutes left that drove me nuts. Hawks get two stops, and then Mo Evens, on consecutive trips, takes the shot. He misses both, of course, and the Hawks fail to take advantage of holding the Bucks scoreless for two possessions.
I’m done with Mo Evans. I stated on a past blog that I could take him or leave him. Well, I’ll pack his bags for him. Can’t have Mo Evans taking huge shots for this team. On one, he drives in, misses a short layup/jumper. The next, wide open jumper. Both misses were killers. Get the f’ing ball to Joe or Jamal when a basket needs to be made!
I think they lose in 6. This thought that they will magically turn on a switch and start playing better just because they are at home is absurd. The defense is not going to change. Bucks are going to continue to get easy looks. Remember, Woody saying “the sh#t works” in that Lang Whitaker article? Well, the sh#t doesn’t work after all.
Looks like the whole season was for nothing. The Hawks played harder last night, I’ll give them that. But, really, not going to sit here and praise a bunch of so called professionals for trying hard in a postseason game. That is to be expected.
Jamal Crawford said it best…he said that last night was the way Game 3 should have gone. Then, the Hawks should have won Game 4. Instead, they give no effort in Game 3 and get killed. Then, they can’t handle the pressure in Game 4. And, here we are, 2-2 heading back to Philips.
Will there be a crowd there on Wednesday? I’ll be there. But, can’t really say I am looking forward to it. Boys, I think we are about to see a debacle.

I have tried to stick by Woody with the consistent improvements year-after-year, however it is obvious to me (and others) that he has taken us as far as we can go. Skiles is out-coaching him tactically as his team has made the key adjustments that has turn the tide in this series. Not to mention the fact that he for some reason cannot get the same focus and effort from his team on the road that he gets from them at home. Time for a change!

I think one of the Hawks key guys (particularly Joe or Josh) needs to publicly call out Woodson and his laughable coaching . Call out the ISOs and the switching.
If this happens, it would cause an uproar around the NBA and of course the vast majority of the league will agree that Woodson is clueless. Maybe then he’ll mix some things up, and try new/different things.
If that doesnt happen, Woodson will hold unto the grudge and limit the particular player’s minutes, look like a fool, and be ran out of town instantly.

I am wondering if people saw the same game that I watched…. I am wondering if people can get their heads out of their a**es and look at the progress…. Yeah we lost. BUT WE WERE COMPETITIVE…. WE WORKED OUR BUTTS OFF. It had nothing to do with effort or the players “lack” of defense. It had to do with BAD COACHING.
Switch defense does not work for this team. The reason why is our weak defenders. (Zaza, Jamal, Bibby) They are picking us apart and the guys are getting confused out there. At least 15 points that game was from confusion on switch D. At least another 8 that I saw were from center vs PG. Yet, with the bad coaching and non receptiveness of Mike Woodson…. The guys played with heart. They gave a fight. They did get frustrated…. but wouldnt you if you gave 100% but lost because of loops holes in your defensive scheme?
Fans? You are no fans…. A fan realizes when a team improved and they did. The Bucks got a lot of lucky shots guys. Bucks were shooting like madmen guys. Give these Hawks a break. We missed some open shots and layups… If those were made we would have at least tied and go to overtime…. But again… The effort was there.
I am damn proud of the Hawks last night.
Woodson needs to get rid of that switch D or we will not last in these playoffs. Horford didn’t perform because he got in foul trouble early…. Why? Switch D. Why did Jennings get easy layups? Switch D. Why did Delfino get open? Switch D. Look at the facts and stop bashing our players. Maybe Joe is leaving not only because of weak performances, but it could also be because of our awful so called fan base… Well not really, only a couple of morons out there.
Go Hawks. Win it in six. Mike Woodson, the pressure is on you now. Play with what you got. Make adjustments or get a new job.

I will agree that he had a few nice takes to the hoop. But, he is not playing up to his ability. He isn’t. I don’t know what the problem is. Is he worried too much about refs? Is he expecting the Bucks to just roll over? Is he choking? I don’t know. I just know he is better than what he is playing.

The Hawks will still win this series, they just need to play with more intensity on the road at some point. There always seems to be something plaguing this team. Eventually they’ll get over it. Just late bloomers.
The problem remains that for several years the resident “basketball expert” refused to see the writing on the wall and get an elite PG when they had the chance. Now unless by some miracle they can find a young free agent who will leave thier team…. The Hawks simply aren’t going to get an elite PG.
For that matter how good would this team be if Bogut was playing center and Horford was at PF?

No effort for two games from Josh, Al or Marvin on D, which leads to poor offensive ball movement when they aren’t mentally involved. Josh obviously was embarrassed by what he said and played like he choked on the crow he had to eat. Why must he let his ignorance translate to self destruction on the court?
I assume we’ll play well at home. I assume we’ll lose game 6. Game 7 might just go to the team that deserves it more. Sadly that’s the Bucks. They’ve played hard, they’ve played well. They’ve maximized their talent with hard work and effort. Something our team still claims they need to figure out. If they had Bogut right now we’d be down 3-1 no doubt headed for a 4-1 loss in the series. Sad thing is they don’t need him for an honest shot at ending our season.

“Effective as it was, the Bucks didn’t win because they made one change anymore than the Hawks lost simply because they were playing on the road. In Games 3 and 4, Milwaukee also did a far better job of using the consistency with which the Hawks switch screens both on- and off-the-ball to create advantageous matchups for their offense which led to them making a higher percentage of their shots, which, in turn, helped reduce Atlanta’s fast-break opportunities.”

If our C’s and PF’s can’t guard the opposing teams PG’s and SG’s out on the court, and our SG’s and PG’s can’t guard the opposing teams C’s and PF’s under the basket, rather than make any changes or adjustments, JUST BLAME THE PLAYERS DURING THE POST GM INTERVIEWS. !!!!!!!!STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The HAWKS played with more intensity last night, but not better execution. Woody, didn’t stick to his rotation plan that had been working all year. Woody left Evans in for a good stretch in the 4th, but that was the only positive move I saw from him. As a team, we need to learn from the Bucks. Coaches down to the players need to respect how the Bucks play with desperation. We missed shots in a key sequence in the 4th which could have tied the game. That was the one stretch where I saw us play with the right kind of attitude, but we didn’t play with the right kind of focus.
We need to show some more desperation or just be a lot strict with our execution. The ball needs to get in Josh’s hands at the middle post elbow every possession. The Bucks are either zoning or doubling Josh everytime he gets the ball. We keep running plays that don’t take advantage of that. The Bucks are looking to get a guard matched up with a center or forward on every possession. We keep seeing that matchup because the Bucks are desparate to do it on every possession. We have to be as deliberate and desparate on every one of our possessions.
If we can beat the Bucks, we’ll need to be ready to execute the same way against Orlando
GO HAWKS!!!

Yes I do understand your point. What I was trying to explain is that with better coaching it would not only be effort, but we would have beat them by at least 10 points. We would be having a different conversation now. Playoffs is a different beast, you are not playing a team 4 times in the year with 10-12 games in between. You are playing games back to back. Talent can only take you so far in that. Coaching comes in big time in the playoffs…. You make adjustments every game and try to give yourself the advantage. That is why Lebron will not get a ring this year or any year under his head coach.

How many times did Mo Evans get the ball with the game on the line!? I can count about 6 other players id rather have the ball than him. I dont get it. And Marvin Williams is useless. You have to resign Joe. Its a must because if he leaves we’re still over the cap. We cant sign anyone good enough to make up for his production. Resigned both Marvin and Bibbs like woody said he wanted?
brought in another big in collins who did well against the likes of shaq and other centers in games the previous 2 years to help us with matchup problems during the season and the playoffs?
What difference does it make when woody would have Kurt Thomas on our bench next to Joe Smith,if thomas were available? He would not be playing!
Stackhouse nor jamison would be playing either!!
back in 2008 when jason collins was traded from the nets, here is what was said and bout his numbers:club General Manager and Vice President of Basketball Operations Chris Wallace announced today.
“We are pleased to add a veteran big man with Jason’s team defensive skills and outstanding intangibles to the Grizzlies,” Wallace said. “He has considerable playoff experience with the Nets and will add depth and a defensive presence at the center position. The entire organization wishes Stromile all the best with the Nets.”
Currently in his seventh season, Collins owns career averages of 4.4 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 510 games (404 starts). A strong post defender, Collins had spent his entire NBA career with the Nets after they acquired his draft rights (18th selection in the first round of the 2001 NBA Draft) along with Richard Jefferson and Brandon Armstrong from the Houston Rockets for the draft rights to Eddie Griffin on June 27, 2001.
Collins, who attended Stanford, was the starting center for two NBA Finals teams (2002, 2003) and averaged 3.7 points and 4.4 rebounds in 23.7 minutes in 75 career playoff games (58 starts) with the Nets.
He was the starting center when the nets were last in the playoffs and he has the experience..Why blame sund when its the coaches decision to put or not put him in?
As for Joe Smith, here is what he has done the past 2 years in the playoffs for the CAVS..

08-09 CLE 13 0 217 23-50 3-5 23-29 10 38 48 3 6 7 7 25 72
And we can’t use he nor his production game by game or right now? Heck yea, but, your coach is not implimenting him along with his experience and productivity into the game.
Jamaal Crawford is the only one who gets consistenct minutes..And thats fine,i agree with that..
Joe Smith and Collins, were not here last year and woody stressed that these type of players (who were vets, productive, and had playoffs experience) were what he needed..
But,he for whatever reasons are not adding them in the mix for the bucks to configure.(When they,(skiles and staff, break down the tapes)..
Note to woody:We have digital vids, recorders,DVR AND DVD’S now,so throw away the VCR fred flintstone,i meant woody..

Its just that we’re being outcoached by a coach who does not know how to
use his players to his advantage, nor knows how to adjust and does the same thing over and over and over again expecting a different outcome..I think its called,”INSANITY”!!

And last nights comments (by woodson),on how the bucks defended home court and how we do as well shows that this team does take the personality of its coach along with his beliefs, that as long as were home we’ll be ok..And he kept harporing on our 53 wins this season..
53 wins was great woody,no doubt about it..But guess what? It means squat when your in the playoffs(unless your looking at your home court advantage)..The playoffs are a different season, and you have to break down you opponents game and adjust your scheme as well..And,guess what? We don’t!!
This guy is clueless and now with his 1-10 playoff road record, and “strange”post games comments,he will never have a head coaching position again..He is not a young coach, whom you would say,”well,he has time to learn, improve, and change”..Woody is settled in his ways..
And his ways are not helping his team, its hurting them..And its hurting us all..

Woody is a basketball genius. His move rival those of Phil Jackson, Pat Riley, and the legendary Red Aurebach…NOT!!!! Unfortunately, he is making very little of the talent that he has on the team and bench. Basketball, like any other sport, is about adjustments. You either make the right adjustments quickly, or you will adjusted…out the door.
Jennings is absolutely killing the Hawks, so why not employ Teague and West into the lineup and make him work for every bucket. This is the playoffs, there should be ZERO layups!!!!!!! Knock the sh!!! out of these guys and absolutely, positively no layups!!!!!!!!!!!! Let them know you mean business or you going home quickly.

That’s the danger with young teams…once they start looking a head…its near impossible to get there focus back. Woody keeps gamble with that Bibby and JC line up at critical times in the game…and he keep getting burned.
@Newkid, I owe you an apology on Marvin…you was right…he needs a change of scenery. AS FAR AS I’M CONCERN…Woody should put Marvin in street clothes for the rest of this series…just like does the rest of his under achievers…and Zaza too…split that time between MO and Joe Smith…I guarantee you we would get more production than what we are getting now…two key guys are giving us nothing. I know Al is struggle too…at lease he is competing.

I still think the Hawks will win this series, because I think they will win game 5 tomorrow night, and put a lot of pressure on the Bucks to win game 6.
That being said, assuming the Hawks win, I have very little confidence in them that they can win a road game against the Magic. And we have seen the Magic win in ATL before, so I dont know what to expect going forward.
Woody and the Hawks need to figure out a backup plan for when the players are not executing the switching correctly. Because right now, our plan B is to play with more energy, and execute plan A better.

“But, he is not playing up to his ability. He isn’t. I don’t know what the problem is. ”
The Bucks crowd got into his head. Plain and simple. He knew the boos were coming and instead of just playing his game, he tried to go out there and shut them up. Bottom line is, you need ice in your veins to be able to do that. He is too much of a hothead to pull that off.

Mike is Back, Marvin is a problem. He was just terrible last night. I don’t understand that guy. He is capable of playing well. He just does not seem to have the ability to get himself to do that every night.
He can’t be such a nonfactor. I sit here getting on Josh Smith, but at least he made some plays. Marvin does nothing. It might be time for him to leave here. I wonder if there is any market for him.
I about threw my remote control across the room when he drove in and was called for the charge in the 2nd quarter last night. And, I counted at least three times that he failed to get out on Delfino. Marvin never seems to respond well to tough, physical games like last night’s.

Why are se switching every screen? It works at times. I have always thought you do it when you can’t get through the pick. I know Woodson’s philosophy is switching every screen, but I am tired of watching Zaza or Al guard Jennings or Salmons. Our defense is so predictable because all Jennings has to do is wait on a ball screen from a big guy and then he can blow by Zaza or Al. It does not matter that he dribbles out the shotclock because he is being given exactly what he wants. I know we have switched all season, but we need to make an adjustment and stop it. Have Zaza or Al jump out and help until Bibby or Jamal can get through the pick. IT is not even like Jennings comes off the screen full blast when we don’t have time to recover. He usually pulls the ball out and waits for one of our bigs to get on him. It was nauseating watching this over and over last night.

I’m certain you’ve all noticed how announcers will corner HC’s at halftime and ask them questions about how the gm is going for their teams? But have you noticed when it comes to the Hawks, those same announcers choose to corner our assistant coaches, rather than our HC, to get that same information?
I guess the announcers have figured out if they want to get explanations and/or proposed strategies, rather than excuses, they’d better consult someone other than Woodson.
To be honest, none of us should at all surprised or upset at what’s going on with the Hawks. It’s not like we haven’t seen the same drama played out by Woodson and the team over the last 2 regular seasons and last yrs playoffs. If we’re really lucky, we’ll struggle through and win this 1st rd series, and get embarrassed in the 2nd rd, just like last yr.
We have to be honest with ourselves. Can we really expect JJ to want to resign and endure more of the frustration and consistent inconsistency that’s certain to come if Woodson is retained? Even though Horford and Smoove have played the entire season at an Allstar level, and we’ve added JCrawford, who’s the certain 6th man of the yr, we’re having the same problems we’ve had in previous yrs with scoring, defending, bench utilization, player development, accountability, motivation, making adjustments, changes and/or utilizing strategy when called for, especially during gms.
WOODSON IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF THE PETER PRINCIPLE. The talent, depth, youth, demands, requirements and expectations of this talented Hawks team and its players are far beyond HC Mike Woodson’s ability to manage or effectively coach. We can only hope GM RSund is aware of our HC problems and makes the correct decision by not renewing Woodson’s contract. We can’t hope to get better on the court until we get better on the sidelines, and that means better coaching.

Here is what I don’t understand . BJennings basically beat the Hawks because they could not contain him because of his speed. JTeague is just as fast as Jenning and both are basically rookies yet Woodson refused give him any playing time. Woodson continues to hang his big men out to dry while Teague who has the best chance of staying in front of Jennings plays zero minutes. Folks, the key problem with this team is coaching period. If I were JTeague, I would be highly fustrated right now sitting there watching another totally destroy my team because my coach has zero confidence in me to at least use my speed to slow the guy down. You can see the fustration on the players faces.

Those of you who bring up the Hawks’ 53-win regular season are missing the point too. The Bucks played basically their entire season without their best offensive player, ran their offense through a rookie who shot under 40% for the season and their journeyman defensive matador backup PG, and still managed to win 46 games — only 7 less than Atlanta.
For the sake of comparison, it would be like if Joe Johnson got injured to start the season, contributed basically nothing, and the Hawks started Teague and Crawford in the back court every game and ran the offense through them, with Bibby coming off the bench to split time with Teague.
How many wins would the Hawks have, with Woody as the head coach, if they started Teague-Crawford-Williams-Smith-Horford all season with Bibby splitting time with Teague off the bench?
Would they even make the playoffs?

I don’t think you can try to spin this “reaction” any other way. Everybody that has talked Hawks basketball was disappointed in the Hawks for not taking control of this series. There’s no offensive chemistry and way too many lapses on defense to take them seriously.
As much as I hate Jon Barry, it pains me to say that we’re proving him right. It hurts to HEAR him talk about the Hawks Jekyll and Hyde effect, but then the Hawks have to come out and SHOW us what he’s talking about.

Najeh . . . the saving grace for Milwaukee, was the Salmons trade. That’s when the team took off. That gave them another guy who could create his own offense off the dribble, and also shoot open jumpers. Salmons has stepped up, and played at a higher level than Jamal Crawford has this year. That’s not a diss on Jamal, it’s just illustrating how well Salmons has played .
And unbelievably, the Stackhouse acquisition ended up being just what that team needed to round out their bench.
What you see Milwaukee doing now, is playing to their strengths as a team. And that is letting their guards dictate the tempo by utilizing their shot creation skills. Salmons, Jennings, Ridnour, and even Stackhouse can ALL create their own shot.
The adjustment Woody needs to make, is to make a concerted effort to shut down Jennings . . and even rough him up a little. If that means that we need to double team that dude to get the ball out of his hands, then so be it. But we can’t let him dictate tempo and the pace of the game.

Section 303, guys have been saying it for years on the blog…but I would always abstain. At this point…aside from his draft position and who we missed out on in the draft that year…THE TEAM SIMPLY CANNOT CONTINUE…to get that type of listless production out of the SF position…Not from a starter…not if you are serious about challenging for a ring. THAT lies directly on the coach.
O’Brien, we all still feel the Hawks will win the series…but if you are talking becoming an Elite team…it goes deeper than that…you are looking for your keys guys to step their level of play up in the playoff. The all out pessimism on this board is almost funny though. But that’s the nature of the playoffs. Anxiety at its highest.
I’ll state this again, because I’ve been saying it for 3 months now. Almost every time the Hawks have faced a little adversity, and a potential 3 game losing streak, they have found a way to win that game. Almost every time.
It’s no doubt in my mind that we’ll win Game 5 . . . I just want to see how the defense comes out to play. I want to see if the coach does make a defensive adjustment. That’s the biggest thing I’m looking at for Game 5.

Maybe I demand excellence? I don’t demand wins, but I do demand consistent professional effort. We didn’t get it. The series could’ve been over or at least ending Wednesday.

I have my doubts how they will respond to it.
Gosh, this could all fall apart real quick. All the building of the past 5-6 seasons could crumble. Lose this series, I doubt Joe is back. I doubt Woodson is back. Suddenly, it’s 2004-2005 all over again.

At this point what other option do we have?
Jennings is the cast alas that open up everything for the Bucks. We gotta take away Jennings and Salmons…make somebody else beat us jez…Its times to make Skiles sweat some…take his main two scores away. There is no danger in playing Teague on Jenning…he is eating us alive…ANYWAY. lol

I’m confident the Hawks will win game 5 too. But the saving grace for the Hawks when it comes to winning game 5 is that its at home in ATL. If game 5 was in Milwaukee, then it would be a toss up.
I agree that Woody should try doubling Jennings for a change, and make him give up the ball early. But I remember last year, Woody refused to double Wade (despite the urging of his assistants). So Wade averaged 29 ppg for the series, and we were pushed to a game 7.
One issue when it comes to doubling though, is will the Hawks communicate on defense, and rotate in time to the open man in case Bucks swing the ball around.
And say what you want about the fan-base, but is it too much to expect a 53 win team, having been to the playoffs 3 straight years, and 4 all star caliber players on the roster, to beat the Bucks in 5 games or less?
Saw this in the Milwaukee paper (www.jsonline.com);

This series ain’t looking good.
Woody is just over-matched.
Somehow on offense Joe is able to get 25-30, despite the bucks effort to clog the paint with their bigs and bring a soft double team from their wings. He is basically drawing their whole team. But, because of our VERY POOR spacing and lack of off-ball movement we are not taking advantage of this. Everybody is standing around hoping Joe will be the saving grace (and he would with a little help. The man has had a hell of a series). This should be fundamental, in fact you would think a team would welcome one player drawing 5 defenders but we fail to take advantage of this. I think the series will have to come down to Josh and Al. You know Joe will get his, but J and A have to command some defensive attention bc right now Kurt Thomas and Mbah Ah Moute are shutting both of them down 1-on-1. One thing I did like in g4 Josh at the top of the key semi Lebron-esque with the ball making a play. He was able to get in the paint both times and finish off of his drive. Jamal Crawford also needs the ball in his hands more to make plays and penetrate, at this point Bibby is a liability on offense and defense.
On defense, the Bucks are anticipating our switches. In fact, they welcome them now. And again no adjustments from Woodson. One set I saw them run was running Jennings down the baseline and setting a back-pick to draw a switch from the opposite wing player, which is where we like to hide Bibby, and then usually Jennings would get in the paint and get a layup or kick it out for an open 3.
We struggle with quick PG. Joe tries hard but cant guard Jennings and Bibby cant guard anybody. The obvious adjustment to me would be to start/play Mo significant minutes who’s main role would be to shut down Jennings penetration. I like our match-ups everywhere else. Teague/Mario West would accomplish the same thing, the goal is to get some quickness in our backcourt as Joe and Bibby are both a little flat-footed.
Woodson seems like a good person but hes a terrible basketball coach.

I saw it going 5 . . IF . . we could win a game in Milwaukee . . which I wasn’t necessarily convinced that we could do. Now, I definitely expect the series to go 7 games, unless JJ plays at a Lebron level in Game 6 or if this defense suffocates Milwaukee in that game.
So to me, this series was always going 5 or 7 games, because I know how this team plays on the road. They just can’t be trusted on the road. JJ may have to literally play like a superhero, in order for us to win Game 6. But he can be mediocre in Game 5, and see us win, because our role players play better at home.
The fact is . . just about this entire fan base thinks Milwaukee is a garbage team without Bogut ( who arguably wasn’t their best player anyway . . . that would be Salmons ). Bogut was a key piece to their interior offense and to their defense. But Salmons has probably been the MVP of that team in the 2nd half of the year.

your being delusional dude, Bogut was and is their best player currently and even at the beginning of the season with Michael Redd. 7-0 footer that average double digit rebounds multiple blocked shots a game and gives a low post scoring presence that they are currently missing in this series and still making it competitive. Even without Redd and Bogut the Bucks aren’t garbage, but they are BY FAR, the worst team in the playoffs based on talent. Now coaching is a whole different story.

Memo to the Hawks Coaching Staff:
If you are not going to double Jennings, which we know you won’t do, please tell the player that is guarding him to force him to his right. He goes left a high percentage of the time. Mo Evans and Josh were the only two players I saw yesterday, who forced him right, and every time he picked up his dribble or passed the ball, except once. Maybe this advice will help you figure it out, since you have no clue. Energy and effort have nothing to do with a scouting report.

Scoop . . . what has Redd and Bogut done together . . other than stay injured all the time?
In the games that Redd played in this year, he was a shadow of his former high scoring self. He was constantly having nagging injuries that was keeping him out of the lineup. And he only shot 35% FG in only 18 games.
The Bucks were 6 – 12 with Redd in the lineup this year.
Bogut played well all year . . well enough to be considered to be in the running for Al’s All-Star spot. But Bogut wasn’t a dependable lead scorer, and had trouble creating his own shot at times.
Enter Salmons
The Bucks were 24 – 28 before Salmons came to the team.
The Bucks finished the season 22 – 8 with Salmons on the squad . . . with Salmons averaging almost 20 ppg. Salmons gave that team a legit go to scorer and shot creator, taking a ton of pressure off of Bogut.

Northcyde,
I respect the fact that you put in the effort to back up your opinions with stats, but it all depends on how you interpret them. The reason why the Bucks soared after acquiring Salmons is bc he filled what they were missing from Redd. You said yourself that he was a shadow of his former self this year and hadn’t really contributed. Bring in Salmons and now the team is reaching its potential. Exit Bogut and you have a very mediocre team that should be swept by a 50 win playoff team unless you cant defend like the Hawks.

Why is everyone expecting anything different than what we’ve seen for the past few years? The Hawks are the most up and down team in the NBA. They can beat anyone, but can lose to anybody. Besides, look at it like this:
Skiles > Woody(by a long shot)
Jennings (and Ridenhour) > Bibby,
Salmons Duck and Mo
Mbah a Moute and Illyosova > Josh Smith by himself(Woody refuses to play Joe Smith)
Horford > Thomas (but if Bogut were playing, I’d say Milwaukee should be the favorite)
But yet we’re dissappointed about being tied 2-2? Please. I expected it. Where have you guys been for the past few years? Nothing new here.

The Hawks don’t need to double anyone on the Bucks team. Someone with some juice needs to try and get it through Woodson’s stupid head that it would be better for the team defensively if we stopped switching everything. It makes perfect sense to everyone but old dumbA$$ Woodson that it’s better for our players, and the team overall, to have our guards fight over picks and stay with their man. That would allow our 2 best shotblockers to remain close to the lane and protect the basket against their penetration, rather than the other way around.
After the 1st 2 gms, the Bucks have obviously made adjustments that have made a tremendous difference for them. First, they’ve decided to pressure Bibby, which forces us to start our OFF above the 3pt line. They also know if he does any damage, it will usually be in the 1st quarter or half. He almost completely disappears in the 2nd half and becomes a total liability for us. Secondly, they use the pick and roll to force a switch and take advantage of our PF and C out on the perimeter, or attack Bibby directly if he ends up on the ball.
Woodson blamed the players lack of energy and effort for our 1st loss. Well, we got energy, effort and OFF in our 2nd loss, but we got absolutely nothing from Woodson. He continued to play Bibby and his beloved switching DEF throughout the 2nd half, which forced Horford, Smooth and Zaza to try and stop BJennings.
Can anyone tell me why JoSmith got a DNP CD, especially with Horford and Zaza getting into early foul trouble, or why he played only 4:06mins in our 1st loss?

Ken Strickland,
Totally agree with your first statement. I have no idea why we are doubling anyone on the Bucks. Maybe Jennings (to get the ball out of his hands), maybe Salmons (if he gets hot), but thats it. No one else is good enough offensively to command a double team, adn the only strength that Delfino, or the rooke Illyasovea have is the ability to knock down jump shots. Switching on everything will only leave these guys open on the perimeter.

Ok folks I read just about all of the post about the hawks defensive problems. Now I posted this team will never be able to play defense until they get a center. No people Al Horford is not a center. First off no matter what sport you play football, basketball, soccer, hockey the guy closest to the net must be defensive minded!!!! This is the anchor of the defense man!!!! dont you get this!!!. Ok NT in football is the most important part of the defense man!! look at the NFL draft 2 of top 3 picks were DT’s. Yes Marvin is a dog yes, Yes Bibby is old and yes Zaza,Bibby, and Marvin just ripped us off. But a real rebounding defensive center that controls the paint is what we need. I love Horford but he is a PF!!!. I ve screaming since the trade deadline last year to trade Marvin for either Tyson Chandler,Sam Dalmebert,Marcus Camby,Brendan Haywood all who were available. Doesnt mean we would have won a title but gosh these guys would have been able to at least hold there in own the paint man!!! Look at how Chandler nuetralized Howard during that series. He kept him in foul trouble and off the glass. No they cant stop him but at least they can hold there own. Ok im out I love the Hawks but there fundamentally set up wrong. See you guys next year. O’Brien . . . with the way Kirk Hinrich is playing lately, they probably miss him a lot. But I think they miss Ben Gordon more, because he was the one guy who could get red hot and give them that extra scoring punch.
As far as what can we do on the road to turn things around, I only see 3 possible things:
1) Throw multiple defensive looks at the Bucks and find a defensive personnel grouping to play in the game down the stretch. The switching defense is tailor-made made for JJ, Smoove, and Marvin. And Horford has to be part of that group. So it’s gonna be up to Bibby, Crawford, or Teague ( when he gers in ) or Mario, to defend well at the 1. Even if they play straight up, JJ, Horford, Marvin, and Smoove have to be on the floor, along with whomever at the 1. But I’d definitely double team Jennings, to disrupt his good vibe. Which leads me to #2 . . .
2) Knock Jennings and Co ON THEIR AZZ. At some point, the lay-up/3 point ish has to stop. Somebody has to give that hard foul on somebody, to take some of that spunk out of them. And not only that, somebody could set a hard scren on him. He’s their engine right now. So if you slow the engine down, you slow them down.
3) JJ may have to go for 40+ points in Game 6. Sometimes, the star players simply have to will his squad to victory. And JJ is about the only guy that can be trusted to deliver in this series. So we may be put in a situation in which those other guys will just have to suck it up and play defense, while JJ tries to take over the game, ala what he did in Game 4 of the Boston series.

And people keep talking about Horford not being a true center, and how he’s the problem. But in reality, it’s Josh Smith that throws this team out of balance. That’s always been the case.
Smoove represents everything that is great about this team, and everything that is wrong about this team . . at the same time. His athleticism and speed makes him one of the most exciting PFs to watch in the league. But his lack of toughness at the 4, makes him a liability at times.
It would be foolish to start Zaza simply because he has “center size”, and bench Horford or Smoove, because Zaza is a sub par center. Both of those guys are way too talented to be benched in favor of Zaza. So we roll with what we have, and try to make due.

Im a Bucks fan who went to both games in milwaukee, and i have to say, after the first two games in ATL, i thought we were done. but my how a week’s time can change a series. you hawks fans probably noticed by now that we were able to draw 18k in a heartbeat and dismantle your defense. This isnt an attack on the Hawks or anything, but look at who kept you in the game last night, JJ and Bibby. If i were the hawks, i would look at your defense and try to see that when Jennings goes into the lane and you guys swarm him, he just has to kick it out to Salmons, Ersan, or Delfino for the easy 3. The Bucks have been crashing the boards this whole series, not just games 3 & 4. And with Josh Smith being an idiot and lighting a fire under the Bucks really awoken the sleeping giant in the Bucks. In final, watch out, because the Bucks have a MUCH better chance at winning in Phillips than the Hawks do at the BC. The ONLY WAY the hawks will win this is because of homecourt advantage. The only series that should have been a sweep was a sweep already (Charlotte vs. Orlando). The Bulls are not out-manned or out-husted enough on any given night to be swept and the Cavs are not invincible or great enough to just walk through anyone. The bottom line is that Orlando > Cleveland and far better than Charlotte. Look at them on paper, look at them in action, look at their style of play, the proof is all over the place. Don’t know how many of you are watching the Lakers-Thunder game, but Doug Collins just elaborated on why the minutes young players get at the end of games, even blowout games, go a long way towards boosting their confidence and making them better players. He said this in relation to Eric Maynor, the Thunder’s rookie point guard who had a solid run at the end of the previous game, a blowout that the Thunder won. Maynor was traded mid-season to the Thunder, who gave him a consistent 15 minutes per game and watched his stats steadily increase towards the end of the season.
Jeff Teague put up 25 points and 15 dimes in the final game of the season.
Nobody on the Hawks can guard Brandon Jennings — at least, nobody who has played so far.

Anyone who handles the ball as much as Brandon Jennings with as much free reign and who only has to play one end of the court is gonna get there points .
We really need to stop talking about shutting someone who has the ball that much down defensively its simply not gonna happen .
Players rarely wear down when they are only playing one end of the court.
So we put teague on him and then what ? Teague never gets the rock so Brandon is resting on defense and then getting the ball and waiting on us to switch and then going to work. There is no reason to put Teague int the game to have him switch and guard Kurt Thomas
Right now I would go at both Ridnour and Jennings with Crawford at the point guard when he comes into the game . Just tell him not to switch and to just go over the top of course he will get beat a couple of times but then later in the game you can switch late in the clock and catch them off guard or better yet how about just doubling them on those screens at certain times of the game and forcing those bigmen to make a few shots on consecutive possessions .
Joe 41 mpg – 18 total fta
Josh 36 mpg 17 total fta
Jamal 28 mpg 16 total fta

Too many comments on here don’t give the Bucks enough credit. After making the trade for Salmons, Milwaukee has been one of, if not the, hottest team in the NBA. They’re still winning games without Bogut. Don’t sell the Bucks short just because they’ve been sitting at the bottom of the standings the past couple of seasons. Am I a Bucks fan? Of course…Milwaukee born and raised. However I will say this: as many of you agree, the winner of game 5 will win the series. If Milwaukee can squeeze out a W in Atlanta, they should be able to win the series at home in game 6. If Atlanta wins game 5, the series will go to 7, and the Hawks will win it at home. Atlanta is leaps and bounds stronger, faster and more athletic than Milwaukee, but that doesn’t mean they’ll win the series.

This is the type of basketball you get with undisciplined players. Not passing the ball, NOT being smart on the court and I don’t think its any better on the sideline either. Just think of all the great teams from the past I mean 80’s and early 90’s making the extra pass. It’s hard to defend great ball movement. These player look like they play street ball. They need to pass the ball 5 times before anyone shoots the ball, just like a little leauge team would? This is why the NBA has lost fans for years, no one knows how to play the games of basketball anymore.Esp the Hawks

“Too many comments on here don’t give the Bucks enough credit.”
“Atlanta is leaps and bounds stronger, faster and more athletic than Milwaukee, but that doesn’t mean they’ll win the series.”
The comments on here don’t give the Bucks credit because as hot as they may have been, like you admit yourself, they don’t hold a candle to the Hawks talent-wise. A player can’t change his talent, but he can change his mentality for the better. A team may not be able to change their talent within a season, but they can change their schemes for the better. If the Hawks were losing because they were inferior in talent — like they will be in Round 2 — we may be disappointed, but we would accept it. The Hawks are losing despite having far superior talent, and that is unacceptable.
The Bucks have a ton of heart and play smart basketball, but a 53-win team with 2 All-Stars, the 6th man of the year, and a DPOY candidate should be able to put that team away regardless — just like the Cavs did to the scrappy Bulls. The single thing that annoys every single sports fan is when a player or team doesn’t get the most out of their talent. Right now that’s the Hawks’ problem.

Boy oh Boy, would it be nice to see the Hawks move the ball AND move without the ball as much as Milwaukee does! I think Skiles is showing “Woody the Wood——” how to coach.

I hope someone from the Hawks reads this blog…..
Coach W- Marvin comes across as a good kid, but Please, Please limit his minutes/remove him from the starting lineup – he just can’t shake off this bad season and now is crunch time we are literally playing 4 or 5.
(1) when an opponent drives the lane for a layup (especially during the playoffs)- make them pay! I’m not advocating flagrants either.
(2) Jeff Teague or Mario West can at least slow down Jennings because Mike B. just isnt quick enough.
(3) Tell Josh this is the playoffs and to immediately stop the whining-get back on D man!
(4) The switching D doesn’t work on the Bucks-how about straight man to man or zone?
(5) Doesn’t Joe Smith have playoff experience?
Last but not least, Joe Johnson is playing playoff basketball but his teammates seem to think this is game 32 of the regular season because there is no killer instinct or drive to win the Championship-seems they are measuring there success to get past Orlando only…….

Idk who’s the bigger idiot? Woody for starting Marvin, or Sund for giving him an extension? I’d have to say BOTH.

big dave, yes i caught it the run ricky run show you mentioned on ricky williams. i have really liked ricky so i watched to see what he has gone through. it was very enlightening. does seem schizoid personality to me, alone with very profound deep thoughts. boy, did his coach abuse him before he left the game the first time and i lost any respect for mike wallace which i didnt have much for. he didnt come close to empathy or compassion in that segment but a complete azz. good show, great quality.
now, maybe we will do to the bucks what the lakers did last night to the thunder.

No way Doc. It aint happening. The Lakers blew out the Thunder. When was the last time the Hawks blew out anybody? They always let you back in the game. No matter how big the lead. The Lakers also have Phil Jackson, who knows how to make adjustments.

Whatz good Doc? I agree with your assesment on Mike Wallace, he was a total azz, with not a ounce of compassion. This guy was sexually abused by his father, and Mike Wallace down played the situation.

I think Hawks win by 10+ tonight. The crowd will be hyped, and players will feed off the energy. Most importantly, the Bucks wont shoot such a high percentage like they did in game 3 and 4.
Cavs, Magic and Celtics are all through to the next round. Since the Magic are resting, Hawks need to win the next 2 games, because we dont have as many off days in the second round…

WHAT’S UP DOC-It appeared to me that Mike Wallace thought he was dealing strickly with a hardnosed, feel no pain football player than a troubled human being that’s overcome so much pain and adversity while still managing to cope with personal issues. Kind of makes you wonder if he was trying to take the shock jock approach. It would have been far more revealing and rewarding if Barbara Walters or Oprah had done that interview.
They are the best at doing those kinds of indepth, probing interviews that deal with personal tragedy.

If we win this series, what exactly will we have accomplished if we get embarrassed in the 2nd rd, like we did last yr? If we win this series and advance to the 2nd rd, and Woodson gets resigned, everyone loses in the longrun but him. If we lose this series and Woodson is let go, he’s the only one that actually loses in the long run. Therefore, if his fate is based how us advancing past the 1st rd, I hope we lose this series to the Bucks. Lets face it, even if we win this series, we’re only going to get embarrassed by whoever we play in the 2nd rd.
Think about it, with Woodson as our HC we certainly can’t expect to improve through the draft. Marvin is the last draft pick Woodson has given an opportunity to develop, and he’s regressed after 5yrs. We certainly can’t expect to improve much by adding more talent through free agency, since Woody can’t bring himself to extend his bench use beyond 7 primary players.
Our starting 5, plus Zaza, have been together for 3yrs, and except for Bibby, 4 of our starters, plus Zaza, have been together for 5yrs. Yet, we still hear the same stupid excuses from Woodson, WE’RE STILL LEARNING TO WIN or WE’RE STILL A YOUNG INEXPERIENCED TEAM. Does he really think everyone else is as stupid and deep in denial as he and his supporters obviously are?
Can anyone name another HC that would be stupid enough to start MBibby, let alone play him 27.5MPG, with this yrs poor OFF output and nonexistent DEF output, especially with an option like JTeague on the bench? Let’s double Woodson’s level of stupidity by asking if there’s another HC stupid enough to start 2 veteran players that have been as inconsistent and nonproductive as MBibby and MWilliams have been this season?
You’d think this fool would have experimented with benching each player at least once during the season to see if it would benefit the player and/or the team. Instead, his philosophy has been to refuse making any changes or adjustments, even if it’s temporary. He just believes in maintaining the status quo and letting the chips fall where the may, even if it’s hurting the team.
It seems to be easier for him to make excuses, even if it’s the same lame, unacceptable, repetitive excuses, than to actually be a responsible HC that makes changes and/or adjustments. What kind sick mentality holds his rookies accoutable for everything they do DURING the gm, yet refuses to hold a single veteran player accountable for what they do DURING the gm, then blames the players for everything that went wrong AFTER the gm? STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES. FIRE WOODY, FIRE WOODY, FIRE WOODY!!!
