– So which one of these teams is the experienced playoff group? Which one has a rookie running point? Which squad has guys who don’t seem to know it’s going to be more physical in the playoffs, especially on the road?
– “It is frustrating, man,” J.J. said. “It just seems like we don’t have the toughness. They were coming up with all the loose balls, and all the big rebounds. We couldn’t get stops when we needed to. It’s killing us.”
– The Hawks competed better in Game 4 than in Game 3 but it’s not like they could be much worse in that regard. They couldn’t overtake the Bucks because rookie Brandon Jennings had his way with them.
– Jennings has figured out the Hawks’ switching defense. If he wasn’t making jumpers, he was slithering to the rim to score. If he wasn’t doing that, he was dropping it off in the paint for teammates. And if that wasn’t there, the Bucks worked the ball around the perimeter, where Delfino inevitably was standing wide open to catch a pass for a 3.
– The Bucks worked over the Hawks. “Jennings has such quickness that when we get out on him he opens up stuff for his shooters,” Jamal said. “He gets around one person, he keeps his dribble, Delfino was getting shots Salmons was getting shots, Stackhouse was getting shots Ilyasova was getting shots. I think the penetration is hurting us a little bit.”
– More than a little bit. “It’s been tough because we switch a lot and they just get pretty much any penetration they wanted,” J.J. said. “They got us helter skelter, to where we are scrambling trying to find guys, and now we are at a disadvantage.”
– Is it time for the Hawks to adjust their defensive approach of switching all the time? “I don’t know,” Joe said. “I am sure we will come up with something. We have just got to get back playing with energy. They are getting layup after layup, you can’t have that in playoff basketball.”
– But this wasn’t about a lack of energy by the Hawks. They played hard, for the most part. It was about Jennings, Ridnour, Salmons and Delfino doing a much better job finding holes against the switches than they did in Games 1 and 2 and the Hawks sticking with the strategy.
– It’s not working. “I haven’t got my shot blocked as much,” Jennings said with a smile, referring to how he recklessly and ineffectively attacked the rim in Game 2. “I think just making smart decisions and learning as the series goes on and just moving the ball. We are a better team when everyone is moving the ball and touching the ball.”
– I didn’t get a chance to ask Woody if he’s considering adjusting the defensive strategy. If he doesn’t, I don’t see how Jennings, Ridnour, Salmons and Delfino don’t continue to take advantage.
– After it looked like Woody had the advantage in the first two games, Scott Skiles has taken it back. In this game, he went deep in his bench, got the Bucks sharing the ball and got something from everyone. “That’s pretty much our formula,” he said. “We need everybody to play as well that we can get. We’re not afraid to leave them out there during critical minutes.”
– The Bucks were better than the Hawks, and they were tougher, too. Yes the Bucks, especially Kurt Thomas , were getting away with holding, moving screens, and pushes. It took too long for the Hawks to respond in kind.
– “We know what to expect,” J.J. said. “We have got to stop complaining so much. We worry about them holding and scratching and clawing. We have just got to do the same thing. Stop worrying about what the refs are calling, and just play. We complain way too much.”
– The Hawks should have been mad about the way the Bucks got to the rim at will. Milwaukee shot 55 percent and scored 44 points in the paint, for crying out loud. In the playoffs. “We had too many breakdowns on the perimeter,” Smoove said. “Guys had to help and they knocked down jump shots. We had poor rotations and kept leaving Delfino at the 3-point line.”
– All of that is true but Josh isn’t blameless. I saw him watching guys score at the rim instead of challenging shots. He was back to being weak on closeouts. When J.J. was talking about guys complaining too much about calls, Smoove has to be at or near the top of the list.
– “We can’t let that get the best of us,” Jamal said. “A call is a call, it can’t be changed. You just have to go out there and compete.”
– Josh insisted he wasn’t frustrated about the physical play. “I was straight,” Smoove said. “People were not helping each other out and not communicating. That’s really why I was frustrated.”
– While the Bucks were getting easy shots, the Hawks were jacking up jumpers. They occasionally worked the inside-out game but there wasn’t much flow for long stretches of the game. “We are not being aggressive,” Joe said. “We are just sitting back on our heels. They are attacking, and we are just kind of sitting back watching.”
– The Hawks are 1-10 in postseason road games in the last three years. Haven’t these long, hard series gotten old? “I would have thought so a long time ago,” Joe said. “Obviously it hasn’t. I guess we just like going seven games. It kills us, man. We get banged up and we just get no rest.”
– The Magic swept Charlotte, by the way.
– The Hawks have won 15 straight at Philips but the Bucks have the confidence and momentum in the series. “I can’t wait until Friday to come back home and finish up the series, hopefully,” Jennings said. What does it mean for the Hawks that it sounds less like boasting, and more like a plan?
– “I still feel like there is no pressure on us,” Jennings said. “At the end of the day, everyone still expects us to lose the series. The best thing we can do is keep fighting and keep competing with them.”
– I’m out, Hawks fans.

Why are se switching every screen? It works at times. I have always thought you do it when you can’t get through the pick. I know Woodson’s philosophy is switching every screen, but I am tired of watching Zaza or Al guard Jennings or Salmons. Our defense is so predictable because all Jennings has to do is wait on a ball screen from a big guy and then he can blow by Zaza or Al. It does not matter that he dribbles out the shotclock because he is being given exactly what he wants. I know we have switched all season, but we need to make an adjustment and stop it. Have Zaza or Al jump out and help until Bibby or Jamal can get through the pick. IT is not even like Jennings comes off the screen full blast when we don’t have time to recover. He usually pulls the ball out and waits for one of our bigs to get on him. It was nauseating watching this over and over last night.

I’m certain you’ve all noticed how announcers will corner HC’s at halftime and ask them questions about how the gm is going for their teams? But have you noticed when it comes to the Hawks, those same announcers choose to corner our assistant coaches, rather than our HC, to get that same information?
I guess the announcers have figured out if they want to get explanations and/or proposed strategies, rather than excuses, they’d better consult someone other than Woodson.
To be honest, none of us should at all surprised or upset at what’s going on with the Hawks. It’s not like we haven’t seen the same drama played out by Woodson and the team over the last 2 regular seasons and last yrs playoffs. If we’re really lucky, we’ll struggle through and win this 1st rd series, and get embarrassed in the 2nd rd, just like last yr.
We have to be honest with ourselves. Can we really expect JJ to want to resign and endure more of the frustration and consistent inconsistency that’s certain to come if Woodson is retained? Even though Horford and Smoove have played the entire season at an Allstar level, and we’ve added JCrawford, who’s the certain 6th man of the yr, we’re having the same problems we’ve had in previous yrs with scoring, defending, bench utilization, player development, accountability, motivation, making adjustments, changes and/or utilizing strategy when called for, especially during gms.
WOODSON IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF THE PETER PRINCIPLE. The talent, depth, youth, demands, requirements and expectations of this talented Hawks team and its players are far beyond HC Mike Woodson’s ability to manage or effectively coach. We can only hope GM RSund is aware of our HC problems and makes the correct decision by not renewing Woodson’s contract. We can’t hope to get better on the court until we get better on the sidelines, and that means better coaching.

Here is what I don’t understand . BJennings basically beat the Hawks because they could not contain him because of his speed. JTeague is just as fast as Jenning and both are basically rookies yet Woodson refused give him any playing time. Woodson continues to hang his big men out to dry while Teague who has the best chance of staying in front of Jennings plays zero minutes. Folks, the key problem with this team is coaching period. If I were JTeague, I would be highly fustrated right now sitting there watching another totally destroy my team because my coach has zero confidence in me to at least use my speed to slow the guy down. You can see the fustration on the players faces.

The Hawks road trip was terrible, plain and simple. They want respect but honestly they haven’t earned it fully. Grapevine says that Charles Barkley stated that if the Hawks don’t win Game 4 then they are pretenders.Well guess what they lost.

Those of you who bring up the Hawks’ 53-win regular season are missing the point too. The Bucks played basically their entire season without their best offensive player, ran their offense through a rookie who shot under 40% for the season and their journeyman defensive matador backup PG, and still managed to win 46 games — only 7 less than Atlanta.
For the sake of comparison, it would be like if Joe Johnson got injured to start the season, contributed basically nothing, and the Hawks started Teague and Crawford in the back court every game and ran the offense through them, with Bibby coming off the bench to split time with Teague.
How many wins would the Hawks have, with Woody as the head coach, if they started Teague-Crawford-Williams-Smith-Horford all season with Bibby splitting time with Teague off the bench?
Would they even make the playoffs?

Bibby is a lost cause. He has never been the same since the travesty in 2002. He has his spurts, but all he cares is about the money… He gave up on the NBA. And that is our PG? I still do not understand how Woodson works… to be honest with you I hope after this year I would not have to worry.

I think we’ve waited all season to see whether the Hawks stood a legitimate chance to make it to the ECF. I think last nights game answered that question, at least for me.
I don’t think you can try to spin this “reaction” any other way. Everybody that has talked Hawks basketball was disappointed in the Hawks for not taking control of this series. There’s no offensive chemistry and way too many lapses on defense to take them seriously.
As much as I hate Jon Barry, it pains me to say that we’re proving him right. It hurts to HEAR him talk about the Hawks Jekyll and Hyde effect, but then the Hawks have to come out and SHOW us what he’s talking about.
It’s just upsetting, considering how we were talking about mismatches at every position in games one and two.

Najeh . . . the saving grace for Milwaukee, was the Salmons trade. That’s when the team took off. That gave them another guy who could create his own offense off the dribble, and also shoot open jumpers. Salmons has stepped up, and played at a higher level than Jamal Crawford has this year. That’s not a diss on Jamal, it’s just illustrating how well Salmons has played .
And unbelievably, the Stackhouse acquisition ended up being just what that team needed to round out their bench.
What you see Milwaukee doing now, is playing to their strengths as a team. And that is letting their guards dictate the tempo by utilizing their shot creation skills. Salmons, Jennings, Ridnour, and even Stackhouse can ALL create their own shot.
The adjustment Woody needs to make, is to make a concerted effort to shut down Jennings . . and even rough him up a little. If that means that we need to double team that dude to get the ball out of his hands, then so be it. But we can’t let him dictate tempo and the pace of the game.

Section 303, guys have been saying it for years on the blog…but I would always abstain. At this point…aside from his draft position and who we missed out on in the draft that year…THE TEAM SIMPLY CANNOT CONTINUE…to get that type of listless production out of the SF position…Not from a starter…not if you are serious about challenging for a ring. THAT lies directly on the coach.
O’Brien, we all still feel the Hawks will win the series…but if you are talking becoming an Elite team…it goes deeper than that…you are looking for your keys guys to step their level of play up in the playoff. JJ keep saying the right things…However he may have to do the unthinkable…and start getting in guys grill and saying it during the game. I can see Marvin on the bench crying like Big Baby. lol

Not using Teague on Jennings is a crime. Not using Mario is not being resourceful. Not varying your offense or defense all night is just asking to be exploited.
We need effort, we need intensity, we need our coach to use what he has available!
Be patient JeJe, Woodson is doing it to himself. Now is his opportunity…seems it’s squandered! No change soon and the bleeding will start in the near postseason.

The all out pessimism on this board is almost funny though. But that’s the nature of the playoffs. Anxiety at its highest.
I’ll state this again, because I’ve been saying it for 3 months now. Almost every time the Hawks have faced a little adversity, and a potential 3 game losing streak, they have found a way to win that game. Almost every time.
It’s no doubt in my mind that we’ll win Game 5 . . . I just want to see how the defense comes out to play. I want to see if the coach does make a defensive adjustment. That’s the biggest thing I’m looking at for Game 5.

Just a simple question northclyde, how many games did you see this series going?
Like I said, it’s all about expectations. If you expected to see the Hawks drop two in Milwaukee, then you might not be as disappointed or pesamistic about the Hawks. But, others may have expected more from this team. I myself didn’t expect this series to get past 5.

Maybe I demand excellence? I don’t demand wins, but I do demand consistent professional effort. We didn’t get it. The series could’ve been over or at least ending Wednesday.
Until we learn “HEART” we’ll be out in 4-5 in the second round. That to me is a dissappointment and failure. I love my Hawks, but I can’t sit idle while they beat themselves.

northcyde, I hope you are right. Normally, I would agree with what you are saying. But, I don’t in this case. Something is wrong. The Bucks are continually getting easy baskets, the defense is awful, and the Hawks are playing tight with the ball. The pressure is clearly on the Hawks Wednesday night. I have my doubts how they will respond to it.
Gosh, this could all fall apart real quick. All the building of the past 5-6 seasons could crumble. Lose this series, I doubt Joe is back. I doubt Woodson is back. Suddenly, it’s 2004-2005 all over again.
I sound a lot like Chicken Little, but that’s what I tihnk happens if this series is lost.

Ken, I gotta to agree with you on Teague. I remember when AI was busting loose on the Lakers in the playoff…Phil used the quickest PG he had…to help slow him down…just so happen he was a rookie…that was TLue…when TLue played for the Hawks…my wife use to call Chew Lue…that always crack me up…Anyway it worked. At this point what other option do we have?
Jennings is the cast alas that open up everything for the Bucks. We gotta take away Jennings and Salmons…make somebody else beat us jez…Its times to make Skiles sweat some…take his main two scores away. There is no danger in playing Teague on Jenning…he is eating us alive…ANYWAY. lol
The Hawks will have the same problem with JNelson…might as well get THE ROOK ready…you are still going to need him…if you are serious about advancing to the next round and playing Orlando.

Calm down, Hawks fans.
The Bucks did exactly what they were supposed to do — they protected their home-court. Since they had the 2 games at home, we decided not to show up since the Bucks were SUPPOSED to win.
I could give a !@#$ less about the offense — it’s all about defense. Did you see us close out on the shooters the last 2 games? How we rebounded the basketball? We clearly have the best frontline in the NBA, and bibby has been lights-out for us.

northcyde,
I’m confident the Hawks will win game 5 too. But the saving grace for the Hawks when it comes to winning game 5 is that its at home in ATL. If game 5 was in Milwaukee, then it would be a toss up.
I agree that Woody should try doubling Jennings for a change, and make him give up the ball early. But I remember last year, Woody refused to double Wade (despite the urging of his assistants). So Wade averaged 29 ppg for the series, and we were pushed to a game 7.
One issue when it comes to doubling though, is will the Hawks communicate on defense, and rotate in time to the open man in case Bucks swing the ball around.
And say what you want about the fan-base, but is it too much to expect a 53 win team, having been to the playoffs 3 straight years, and 4 all star caliber players on the roster, to beat the Bucks in 5 games or less?
Saw this in the Milwaukee paper (www.jsonline.com);
“The Milwaukee Bucks are so far ahead of the Hawks in terms of effort, smarts, heart, coaching and anything else you’d care to mention outside raw talent that who knows where this first-round playoff series would stand had Andrew Bogut been available”.

This series ain’t looking good.
Woody is just over-matched.
Somehow on offense Joe is able to get 25-30, despite the bucks effort to clog the paint with their bigs and bring a soft double team from their wings. He is basically drawing their whole team. But, because of our VERY POOR spacing and lack of off-ball movement we are not taking advantage of this. Everybody is standing around hoping Joe will be the saving grace (and he would with a little help. The man has had a hell of a series). This should be fundamental, in fact you would think a team would welcome one player drawing 5 defenders but we fail to take advantage of this. I think the series will have to come down to Josh and Al. You know Joe will get his, but J and A have to command some defensive attention bc right now Kurt Thomas and Mbah Ah Moute are shutting both of them down 1-on-1. One thing I did like in g4 Josh at the top of the key semi Lebron-esque with the ball making a play. He was able to get in the paint both times and finish off of his drive. Jamal Crawford also needs the ball in his hands more to make plays and penetrate, at this point Bibby is a liability on offense and defense.
On defense, the Bucks are anticipating our switches. In fact, they welcome them now. And again no adjustments from Woodson. One set I saw them run was running Jennings down the baseline and setting a back-pick to draw a switch from the opposite wing player, which is where we like to hide Bibby, and then usually Jennings would get in the paint and get a layup or kick it out for an open 3.
We struggle with quick PG. Joe tries hard but cant guard Jennings and Bibby cant guard anybody. The obvious adjustment to me would be to start/play Mo significant minutes who’s main role would be to shut down Jennings penetration. I like our match-ups everywhere else. Teague/Mario West would accomplish the same thing, the goal is to get some quickness in our backcourt as Joe and Bibby are both a little flat-footed.
Woodson seems like a good person but hes a terrible basketball coach.

I saw it going 5 . . IF . . we could win a game in Milwaukee . . which I wasn’t necessarily convinced that we could do. Now, I definitely expect the series to go 7 games, unless JJ plays at a Lebron level in Game 6 or if this defense suffocates Milwaukee in that game.
So to me, this series was always going 5 or 7 games, because I know how this team plays on the road. They just can’t be trusted on the road. JJ may have to literally play like a superhero, in order for us to win Game 6. But he can be mediocre in Game 5, and see us win, because our role players play better at home.
The fact is . . just about this entire fan base thinks Milwaukee is a garbage team without Bogut ( who arguably wasn’t their best player anyway . . . that would be Salmons ). Bogut was a key piece to their interior offense and to their defense. But Salmons has probably been the MVP of that team in the 2nd half of the year.
This Milwaukee team is NOT garbage, unlike how some want to believe. And the Hawks are NOT a potential 60 win team that underachieved, like some want to believe.

your being delusional dude, Bogut was and is their best player currently and even at the beginning of the season with Michael Redd. 7-0 footer that average double digit rebounds multiple blocked shots a game and gives a low post scoring presence that they are currently missing in this series and still making it competitive. Even without Redd and Bogut the Bucks aren’t garbage, but they are BY FAR, the worst team in the playoffs based on talent. Now coaching is a whole different story.
