Milwaukee– The Hawks got their butts kicked. The details of the beatdown seem almost inconsequential in light of the aggregate effect of this blistering in the Bradley Center. The Bucks never got it handed to them like this at Philips Arena, where at least they fought back when the Hawks blitzed them.
– Forget the Xs and Os for a minute and consider the Hawks’ lack of intensity and poise. “It’s unacceptable to get blown out like this,” J.J. said. “We’ll look at the tape and correct our mistakes but more than anything it’s about coming out and playing with more effort.”
– The Hawks spouted some of those playoff cliches: The Bucks simply did what they had to do, the Hawks still own homecourt advantage, they still have a chance to win Game 4 on Monday for a road split. All of that is theoretically true but have the Hawks shown an indication that they can find the mettle it will take to win the next game? It would have been one thing if the Hawks competed and lost but failing to show up is something else.
– “Honestly I have no idea [why],” Joe said. “We knew what to expect and we knew what was at stake. For us to come out the way we played, that’s on the starters. It was unacceptable. Give the Bucks a lot of credit, they ot their team off to a fast start and never looked back.”
– Then again, the Hawks can’t afford to beat themselves up about this for too long. “I’m not taking anything away from the Bucks, they played extremely well tonight,” Woody said. “They did what they were supposed to do but we still hold a 2-1 lead and we still have an opportunity to steal one (in Milwaukee).”
– The Hawks have one road playoff victory in their last three postseasons. Their problems on the road continue to keep them from reaching the level of Cleveland, Orlando (which is looking to sweep Charlotte) and Boston. “We’ve struggled on the road even during the regular season,” J.J. said. “We’ve not been a great road team. We’ve got to find a way.”
– They can start by going back to feeding Smoove and Al inside. Woody had said he was surprised the Bucks didn’t show more resistance in the post in Game 2 after they had success pushing Josh and Al out in the second half of Game 1. The Bucks didn’t make that mistake again.
– “It’s no secret that in the first two games they sort of owned us in the paint,” Scott Skiles said. “We were able to take a few things away tonight.”
– The Hawks waited too long to get Al involved but he also wasn’t as sharp when deciding whether to pick-and-pop or go to the hole. Smoove just wasn’t at all in rhythm.
– The Hawks didn’t help matters by missing a bunch of shots near the rim. That’s how they had 20 offensive rebounds and managed only 12 second-chance points. “They got a lot of offensive rebounds but didn’t turn them into points this time,” Skiles said.
– The Hawks’ pick-and-roll defense was awful. After solid defensive efforts in Games 1 and 2 the Hawks were back to those familiar bad switches and lax closeouts. That meant layups and open 3-pointers all night for the Bucks.
– “Give them credit, they came out and made shots,” Marvin said. “At the same time we didn’t defend the way we usually do.” Marvin’s 1 for 7 shooting line looked bad but he had eight rebounds and probably was the best guy on closeouts.
– There were a few times when the Hawks were close to breaking through and needed patience and ball movement. Instead, J.J. went iso.
– The bench was better, I suppose, though does it really matter in a game like this? Or I guess I should say Zaza was better. Jamal (5 for 13) still can’t get into a rhythm.
– It was a nightmare game for Smoove. He smiled when Bucks fans heckled him near the bench as he sat watching the merciful end of the blowout loss. There wasn’t much he could say, though he was unapologetic afterward.
– “I didn’t say anything about their fans,” he said. “I didn’t say anything that wasn’t true. Some people have different opinions. I gave my opinion and I’m entitled to it. You asked me a question, I gave an honest answer.”
– Hey, I didn’t ask the question to begin with. Milwaukee media folks kept crediting me, too, but it wasn’t me!
– Win Game 4 and the Hawks can forget this one. Mo’s formula for doing it: “Go back to getting the ball inside, get quality shots and play defense first and foremost.”
– I’m out, Hawks fans.

im not sure how much of a “quality shot” we have inside going to Al Horford against Kurt Thomas.. he just doesnt have the skill or strength to be productive inside. we can get the most form him utilizing the pick and pop/roll game…

“Instead, JJ went ISO”. MC.
JJ was the only one making shots, so its hard to blame him for going ISO.
Except for game 4 against Miami last year (which we won by 10), we have been blown out in 9 of our 10 road playoff games last 3 postseasons. Unacceptable.
I’m tired of hearing the same cliche game after game from the players. No energy, no focus, blah blah blah.
The bucks kept it close in ATL in both games, without bogut and redd. And we can’t even keep it close in Milwaukee. And woody said we did not match their “physicalness”.
I don’t think physicality was the issue woody. But This is a TEAM loss, so hopefully we will play better in game 4.

For a team to be this schizo (dominant at home & below average on the road) falls on coaching…point blank. Hate to jump on the bash-Woody-wagon, but it seems to me that a team being as ill-prepared & discombobulated as the Hawks have been on the road since the top of the season is a coaching issue. I’m not crying doom. I still feel the Hawks will take the series, but it’ll be because we simply have better players than the Bucks do. I can’t say that for any team we’ll face in the 2nd round, where our coaching will be more of a factor. Unfortunately, that’s were we reach our ceiling.

I have a feeling that we may see the angry, all-business, got-something-to-prove Hawks in game 4. You could tell from Joe’s post-game interview that he even seemed a bit angry. All the dancing around and singing by the Bucks near the end of the game was just plain disrespectful, it reminded me of the whole LeBron-Joakim Noah incident. You know that the Hawks will be looking to avenge this Game 3 loss. They know that they are the better team and I think it is time to put these Bucks in their place and embarrass them on their own home floor.

OKC actually has looked pretty impressive against LA. Considering they completely dominated LA in Game 4, who had just lost to them in Game 3 and should have made adjustments, and almost made LA look lost, I’m starting to think they may actually have a chance at winning that series. However, I don’t see them being good enough to actually take the West even if they did beat LA. There are just too many dominant teams in their way with much more experience and savvy, whose coaches (e.g. sloan and popovich) who would never allow a 20+ point loss.

seventh. “Just a lack of focus and intensity” shameful – at some point you gotta call it lack of heart. JSmoove should think twice and be more tactful when choosing his words. No need to channel all that negative energy toward yourself on the road. That being said, I expect The Hawks to come out with more intensity.

I’m sorry folks, but Smoove and Horford have to take FULL RESPONSIBILITY for this loss. Just like how JJ’s passive play in a few of those games vs Miami in last year’s playoffs was on him, our PF and C have to be blamed for this loss.
Horford grabbed 3 rebounds. Smoove had 9 OFFENSIVE BOARDS, but didn’t break double figures scoring.
That’s what is unacceptable.
And MC . . go back and see what Smoove and Horford shot in the 1st half. At one point in that game, JJ was 5 – 8 FG . . . the rest of the Hawks were 5 – 20 FG.
It was the bad closeouts, combined with the lack of offense from Smoove, Horford, and Marvin . . and Crawford in that 1st half, that put us in the decifit that we were in.
See, the REAL PROBLEM is that Smoove and Horford aren’t reliable ISO post players. And when they miss shots, the Hawks are pretty much one and done on the offensive end. They have to be set up so that they can be effective.
JJ pretty much did everything he could to keep us somewhat in that game in the 1st half. I think he even had 5 FT attempts in the 1st half . . lol . . which is almost unheard of for JJ.
Nah . . . the frontline must take FULL RESPONSIBILITY for that debacle last night.

I was thoroughly disgusted with how we played. We’re a better team and should never be embarrassed as bad as it was last night. I can deal with a loss, but we flat-out quit after the Bucks run in the 3rd. To me that is unacceptable. Monday is a must win. If we can’t win a road game at Milwaukee then we have no business even trying our luck against Orlando. That said I still think we somehow get it done, and take game 4. FYI I just received an e-mail from the Hawks offering $10 tickets to game 5. There is absolutely no excuse for you not to be at the highlight factory helping our Hawks win if you’re offered $10 tickets.

Well,
atleast the Hawks wasn’t the only “favorite” to dissapoint tonight. Hell, they didn’t even have the largest defeat, that reward goes to the world-class Lakers. And I know one-more thing, I’d rather take a L to the Bucks than take one to the Thunder wit the rapidly improving and “Michael Jordan” call-getting Kevin Durant.

Oklahoma City is a damn good team. Forget about them being a #8 seed vs Milwaukee’s #6. They are light years ahead of the Bucks. The West was so competitive that eighth seeded Thunder was only 7 games worse than the top seeded Lakers during the regular season.
OKC is the youngest team in the league and they already play with more composure and confidence than the Hawks do. Point is don’t draw a comparison between the Lakers and the Hawks because they both got blown out tonight. A good team would have still handled the Bucks. I don’t know if any team would have been able to beat the Thunder tonight.

I was stunned at what witnessed with the game last night. Where was the defense, what has happened to Jamaal’s shot and why did it look like Zaza made a better effort with more energy than Smoove and Al? So much of it is like a lot of people have said in that the coaches should have expected this and prepared the team to at least compete. The players had to know the Bucks have their backs against the wall and will come out fighting for their playoff lives. That said, we did not switch well, left the wrong people open and our fast break was just stifled.
I hope the guys do come out angry, embarrassed and ready to play on Monday because it doesn’t get any easier. If, and I expect they will, the Hawks get by the Bucks, the next team they face is going to be tougher at their home and probably steal one from us at the Highlight Factory. If we can’t at least compete away from home it is going to be a short playoff run. Jamaal, we need you!!!

Time for Sund to pull a Joe Dumars and trade in the 50 win coach (Carlisle) and his stupid switching for a real coach (hell bring on Avery he’s been to the finals before. Dirk is just soft and will never get there again. Just couldn’t take the heat).
Why in the hell is Bibby still in the NBA if he cant defend. Where was Jeff Teague? Why in the Hell were we doubling down in the post??? Kurt Thomas? Mbah a Moute? Just so they could do what they wanted to do this whole series!!! Jack uncontested jumpers!!!!!
I’m tired of it. You can say what you want, but this is the third postseason in a row where we’ve come out like this on the road and laid an egg. I’d say that’s a big enough sample space to make a definitive decision on the coaching staff/sum whack players who have no heart or will to be great (Marvin).

Marvin and Bibby should be demoted to the bench. And Smoove should be on the bench to start road games. I can’t believe after six years and playing ball ur whole lives you still act like scared sissies on the road. If they could they woulda peed in their pants cuz that’s what it looked like they wanted to do.
JJ and Zaza were the only dudes to show up last night. Jamal needs to get back on track I don’t care if it’s ur third playoff game. Jennings, Rose, and Durant are dropping 30+ nightly in the postseason.
If I were JJ, I wouldn’t come back unless we get a better starting PG and SF and get us a legit backup Seven footer and have zaza play backup the PF spot. And why in the hell are we switching everything on defense!!!! We’re not playing the Pheonix suns!!!! GET HIM OUTTA HERE!!!!

This is the main reason Woodson don’t have a contract, for some reason he just can’t motivate his players. When one of our guys takes it to the rack, we have to crash the Offensive boards and get those second-chance points, utilize our size and athleticism inside. Also, Mike Bibby was Defended much better off the pick in this game. He needs to take his shots decisively next game

A beautiful day in ATL – ready for a round of golf after major rain this past weekend.
Well a nightmare last night, but as one famous person said a few years back, “we was who we said we was”
That means we was the team with no toughness. Our so called center, was a no show. Forget the stat line, when is he going to show up as a big man? Hint? Never, he is not a center. He can not even dominate Thomas, who is 90 years old. I mean my fair wife is tougher than Al with clubs in her hand, ooops sorry getting away from the subject.
My friend Wooden has no center, and people are picking on him. Not to mention no point guard. This team lacks defensive intensity all year, and it has to do with lack of a true center and a fast enough point guard. And that monk Marvin, what a joke. MC were you watching the game with your eyes blind folded? How you givin the monk credit? Bibby falling on the floor was the funniest thing. He is soooo old. He was afraid to to take his shots. why?

You know, if we had come out, played solid defense, rebounded, shot the ball well, and still lost by 4, 6, or even 10 points – OK, no big deal. But to watch this no-account team tonight was sad, and a terrific indictment of the coach and his philosophies. How can you watch your team come out in the first half, play no offense, get down by 15 points and not call a timeout?
Why is it that Joe Johnson doesn’t have to play defense? How many times did Jennings go right by him tonight and score at will? sure he can shoot the eyes out of the ball, but this is a TEAM sport and everyone seemed to forget that tonight.
I’ve watched this team all my life and tonight was disgusting. Sorry, but the coach has to bear that responsibility – its his job to manage the team, its his job to prep the team, its his job to motivate the team. What he can’t do is play the game, and when your starters are in and aren’t playing team ball, put the kids in and give the starters the night off because they were clearly taking it. How many offensive rebounds did we get in the first half? where was the leadership in managing the ball tonight? You call that playing point Mike Bibby? Horford, you looked lost at times tonight.
I’m sorry, I can’t support this team and more importantly, this Coach. Mike you’ve done a fine job but you are clearly not the Coach of the future for this franchise. Take your money, go home, find another team to spend 10 years rebuilding and get on with your life. You’re done..

I like what Tee said. We could do without the ‘all caps’ emphasis though. Woody got us to 50 wins, congrats, but man, when are we gonna lace up our boots and go to battle. For real. We can’t even play consistent enuff to sweep scrubs like the freakin Bucks!! We gotta take ‘em in 5 if we’re gonna be half way respected as a legit contender. Woody is a soft, rookie and bench hatin chump too. I’m still pissed we got rid of Solo. He’s gonna be a solid backup for someone who knows how to use bench players. He’s not the only one either. We just don’t have a championship caliber coach yall. Bottom line. Let’s just enjoy the regular season and settle for mediocrity. Go hawks, blah, blah, blah..

The Hawks can’t win on the road. They will go back to ATL down 3-2 and be lucky to eke out a series win at home. If they lose or split at home against whoever their next opponent is, they’re through.

I might be in the minority when I type that the coach is not the problem to the point that you guys make him out to be. I get the point that we had no business losing like this anywhere in the world to the Bucks but we will bounce back. On the other hand, we dont have the personnel to beat Orlando or Cleveland and that is on the front office not Mike Woodson as you guys will claim. Just look at the Cavs and Magic from 1-12 then look at us and its no contest.

That was the most depressing game Ive seen from the hawks in five years. I was angry through the half, furious in the third and disgusted but accepting in the fourth. What a bunch of crap. No fast breaks. No interior play. I have enjoyed this team and lost a lot of money on it and to see them not give a crap was so disheartening. This looks exactly like the miami series. Let them make fools of you on the road. Get your ass swept by Orlando..not because they are better but because you dont have the heart (or perhaps the caoch to provide/incite the heart). Uhg. Embarassment was the word of the day.

Didn’t we sign Joe to a 7 year contract in the beginning???? About the only good picks we have had since then are Josh and Al. Joe has seen us waste picks on Marvin Williams, Josh Childress and AC Law. He knows this organization is going nowhere given the owners are still in court. He is gone after this year, with this unwanted owner drama. Thanks for the memories Joe. Funny how he was the only one who actually tried this game.

I wish I could say this was unbelievable…but after watching Hawks playoff basketball the past two years with Coach Woody at the helm, this it is VERY much believable. I just wonder how much longer Hawks fans will have to suffer through this Jekyll and Hyde style of playoff basketball? When you consider how well the Hawks “CAN” and “HAVE” played in the past three regular seasons, there is absolutely NO REASON as to why they continue to suffer blow outs on the road in the playoffs…except there is a disconnect between the coach and players. Nothing personal against Woody, I imagine he is perhaps a very likable guy with certain basic coaching skills. However, this team’s performance in the playoffs the past two years, combined with the current tournament is a flat out indictment that Woody does not have what it takes to guide this team to play basketball at a championship level.Consider the numbers:
1 – Number of road playoff wins the past three seasons (includes this one)
10 – Number of road playoff games played the past three seasons (includes this one)
24 – Average margin of defeat in road playoff game losses past two seasons (not including this one)
If there was any doubt about the players tuning out Coach Woodson, it was crystal clear during one of the time outs in this game where Woody was “wired” and he was attempting to tell the guys to play harder, but they were walking and/or looking in the opposite direction! It was obvious they had tuned him out.
The good news is that old habits are hard to break and this team’s failure to play consistently at a level their talent suggests will no doubt continue. This will likely result in the Magic sending the Hawks home after a four game sweep in round 2. WHEN this happens, it would be HARD for Rick Sund to justify giving Woody a contract extension. He is out of excuses. No more being able to blame “youth” or “injuries” for his inability to deliver in the playoffs. His nine lives should be up before the end of next month. Although…you can never be quite sure what the Atlanta Spirit Group will do, just look at Don Waddell.

I have just instituted a policy aimed at “bailing out” top-tier NBA playoff teams that are “too big to fail. If the Hawks were to lose this series, the economy would collapse; therefore, my policy will provide $700 Billion so that the Atlanta Hawks can buy a road win in the playoffs.

As a Falcons fan, I think we have had the other teams coach get fired the week after we beat them at least 4 or 5 times. At first, its like “Yeah, we beat them SO bad, they fired their coach.” Then you realize it was more like “When the owner saw then get beat down by the lowly Falcons, he knew it was time for a change.”
If you win big, and no one bats an eyelash, you are good. If you win big, and people are freaking out and asking “WTF”…it kind of lacks vindication.

The Hawks were not only outplayed but outcoached in the 3 rd game. The coach does not play but Woodson should have recognized what game plan the Bucks were successfully deploying and should have devised a strategy to stop their run sooner. Obviously, the Bucks had several days to plan to play to their strengths-their guards obviously have more speed and can shoot high percentage three’s against the taller Hawk players. Shooting from the perimeter worked this time, now the question is what does Woodson have planned to stop their guards?

The Hawks didn’t bring their A game and they looked like a bunch of scrubs. Where was the defense? What are they gonna do now? Blame it on the red ATL jersey. Energy, huh? You just had 3 days off. You gotta be kidding right. Last night was a joke. We got punked.
The Hawks just missed a big opportunity last night.
“It’s not that good teams never lose a game in the postseason. They do. Cleveland fell way behind at Chicago but wound up nearly winning. The Lakers lost in Oklahoma City. The difference is, both those Game 3 losers gave themselves a chance. The Hawks fell behind and stayed there. They never put any game pressure, to use a Krzyzewski phrase, on the home team. They made it too easy.”-Mark Bradley

“The Hawks got their butts kicked. The details of the beatdown seem almost inconsequential in light of the aggregate effect of this blistering in the Bradley Center. The Bucks never got it handed to them like this at Philips Arena, where at least they fought back when the Hawks blitzed them.”
MC, this is what pisses me off. When you see other teams show more fight/heart than the Hawks. The Hawks say they are playing for something. Well honestly right now, it looks like their just playing in front of the home crowd. Not that I don’t appreciate defending home court. But it’s time to get this thang going on the road. Forget what the Lakers, Cavs, do. Show what the Hawks can do. Know what I’m saying?

Listen folks, lets just face reality here. This has been happening all year long and will continue because the Hawks coaching staff cannot make adjustments. They knew that Salmons & Jennings were the two players they had to stop yet fail to do so after 3 or 4 days of preparation while the Bucks shut down the hawks inside guys who had dominated the first two games. If you have not figured this out in 85 games you probably won’t in the playoffs. Its all a lack of motivation, focus, and adjustments and the Hawks are lacking in all three areas.

The Hawks will win this series, because they are one of the best teams in the NBA when they are at home, evidenced by wins over virtually every playoff team in Atlanta (except maybe the Thunder?)
Their problem is playing on the road, and for that reason, they have NO chance beating the Magic. What’s so bad is this is probably just a mental thing.
Woodie just has to turn this road-game situation into an “us against the world” thing. Give them a reason to play explosively on someone else’s court with the intensity they have at home. Come on Woodie, take a page out of Pat Riley’s book and get your team to play with some fight!

Interesting how Josh Smith seems to think Milwaukee is “Nowheresville” despite the fact that Milwaukee proper has a larger population than Atlanta proper. Drmaryb,
Although the Lakers got blown out too, the difference is this has been a disturbing trend for the hawks the last 3 postseasons.
We have been blown out 9 out of 10 road playoff games last 3 years. Plus the Lakers have homecourt in the west. We have home court in 1 round.
This is a team loss, but I agree win northcyde. Al, Josh and Marvin gave us nothing early on. And what’s up with Crawford?

The Hawks STILL have zero road toughness, despite the improvements in wins each year. That’s why nobody being objective seriously believes that the Hawks are a title contender. Bring in Jack Llewelyn (Smoltz’s sports psychologist) and figure out why the Jekyll-and-Hyde act is happening when the game isn’t at Philips Arena.
Solve the road woes. THEN we can debate if the Hawks can win it all…

If you wanna whine about anything defensive, whine about the poor rotations. There’s no winning with you bro. On some nights, you whine about one guy’s inability to block the paint, but then when the Bucks SHOOT LIGHTS OUT, it’s still Horford to blame.
How many times did I see Delfino open in the corner for 3? Poor rotation.
Jennings killed us a couple times from beyond the arc.

I remember the “Memorial Day Massacre” back in the early 1980’s. Boston and LA opened the NBA Finals on that day. Because it was on Memorial Day I was not working and the game was played on live TV rather than on tape delay as was the fashion at that time. I do not remember the score. I think Boston won the game. What I remember is that the team that won that day looked totally unbeatable. They won by around 30 points. The other team looked to be in total disarray. They could not shoot. They could not pass. They could not rebound. They were totally outclassed.
But I also remember that the team that lost that game went on to win the championship. The point is that the team did not let their lack of performance in one game destroy them. Plenty of bloggers have allowed one game to be the basis for bashing their favorite whipping boy. It does not matter if that whipping boy is the coach, the point guard, the center, the power forward, the former number two draft pick, or whoever they chose to bash. That is fine. This is the place for that. And it may turn out that they are right. Or it may turn out that they will turn out to be wrong. This team has the potential to go on to win it all if every thing goes right. Some of us are terminally pessimistic. Some cannot surrender their optimism. I guess I belong to the latter group.
I like the Milwaukee fans who showed up to support their team last night. I like the fans in OKC who have never had the opportunity to witness a major league sport post season before but now have the opportunity to show their love. I do not like Jon Barry but I did like his description of the fans in Sacramento back in the day. I loved seeing the Bulls hand LBJ an embarrassing loss. I loved seeing Orlando win a game when Superman was ineffectual and fouled out of the game. I love what Larry Brown has done in Charlotte even though I do not like him I respect his coaching ability. I loved seeing the Trailblazers tie the series with the Suns. In the West I am pulling for them and OKC and Utah. Jerry Sloan is great. I don’t really care about the Texas shootout but I respect Pops a great deal. Dallas scares me as a possible comparison to my Hawks because they have won more than 50 games in each of the past 10 years without ever winning a championship.
We in Atlanta will get at least one more chance to attend a playoff game in the first round. Can the fans show the love of the fans in OKC, Milwaukee, Sacramento and Portland?

MC, I sit through the entire game…it was miserable and disappointing to watch…However I never expected the Hawks to sweep the bucks…I think I stated as much when we started talking about Orlando.
Basically, the Bucks did to the Hawks…what the Hawks did to Buck…they attacked us at our weakness. They attacked Bibby and Crawford on defense…that was smart…plus they took away Josh…Because they knew, they had a better match-up with Al against Thomas. It amazing how these wagon riders comes out in droves when the team has a bad game. Kurt Thomas is a savvy vets with years of experience guarding the elite Bigs of the league…he made a living frustrating young Bigs like Al. Al finally figured it out and started going to his jump shot…but by then the flood gates was open.
The biggest disappointment besides the continued struggles of Crawford had to be Josh. I mean you run your mouth ABOUT the opponent’s hometown…then you become listless when the team come out and punch you in the mouth first. I watch numerous plays where Josh was disengaged, didn’t hustle for the loose ball, didn’t hustle back on defense, and just stood around. Okay, the whole team was struggling, BUT, don’t run mouth and come out with an effort like that.
However, Hawks fans its not the end of the world…GET OVER IT…AND STOP YOUR WHINING. They will bounce back. I expected the Hawks to win one of those two home games…and I still do. I expect the Hawks to come out with a much better effort Monday, and go up 3-1 in the series.
Woody, has to make some adjustment at the guard position…Josh will be fine…its a learning experience. What ever momentum we had come out of game two was lost with a four day layoff. If Teague had butterflies the size of golf balls…THEN CRAWFORD GOT BUTTERFLIES SIZES OF BASEBALLS…he needs to shake off the butterflies and STEP THE F UP…we need him. Woody its time to give MO and Teague some PT…Skiles will keep attacking that line-up until we make a change.
I’M CALLING A WIN ON MONDAY….GO HAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, the fans in Milwaukee > the fans in Atlanta. They don’t have as much to do and you can actually get to the arenas without spending hours in traffic. It made me wonder if the fact that their fans were blatantly louder than ours had anything to do with the Hawks fragile mentality. That said, I can’t respect a coach who makes no adjustments. We were within 9 twice and did nothing. Bibby is the root of all evil on defense. When Marvin isn’t aggressive our offense doesn’t go. Move Bibby out of the lineup. Put in Jamal at PG. Johnson to SF and Evans at SG. Have Zaza back up Horford or Smoov but don’t take both of them out at the same time.

Good job, Smoove. All you had to do was keep your mouth shut and let us steal these 2 games. Now we are bound to lose every game in Milwaukee because of your idiot mouth. It’d be one thing if the Bucks were talking trash about our team or city, but they weren’t.
And I think MC owes us an apology: the guy came out with numerous articles/blogs about how severely overmatched the Bucks were, and now we lose. So where’s your explanation for that one?
This team last night looked like the Hawks I usually can expect — horrendous defense, 3 on 5 the whole game with Bibby and Marvin doing nothing. Seriously: can Marvin convert a fast-break layup? Why the hell is this guy always on the ground? WTF did Bibby do last night? Really, the team should just shut up. I mean, don’t say anything. Al talked about how they would be “playing for our lifes” when they went to Milwaukee. Then they just don’t even bother to try. Josh starts ripping the city, then is a complete nonfactor.
F these guys. Seriously, F them. If they don’t care, why should we? I hope there is nothing but empty seats in Philips on Wednesday. This team does not deserve an ounce of support.

Great job by the Bucks. You’ve got to hand it to Scott Skiles and his staff. It appears that the extra time in between games allowed them to make the necessary adjustments to be competitive. That is what good coaches do.
First, they adjusted by putting mbah ah moute on Smoove instead of delfino. Their logic was probably that they would let Joe get his numbers and try to contain everybody else. This obviously worked. With Smoove having little impact on the offensive end (let alone of the defensive end), the Hawks were clueless offensively and resorted to “iso Joe”. No production from Bibby, Marvin, Smoove, or our entire bench.
Second, our defensive execution was worse then our offense. The Bucks weren’t doing anything so abstract that could have caught us off guard, just simple screens and good ball movement. Our defensive rotations were god awful-especially to the open shooters on the wings and the help in the lane from dribble penetration. Something has to be done about our perimeter defense. Joe Johnson is a great defender but he cant guard Jennings on the perimeter and we all know Bibby cant guard anybody on the perimeter. In the first half alone, three times a screen was set on Joe at the top of the key and as usual Joe was late getting around it which resulted in Jennings with a wide open three and he made all three. No adjustment was made.
It seems the only adjustment Woody ever makes is increasing Joe’s minutes when the situation gets bad. I was lol’ing when Woody had Mo in the game with Joe and yet Joe was still guarding Jennings and Mo was guarding Salmons. Mo’s value lies in defense, particularly on the perimeter. It would seem obvious that Mo would be better able to guard Jennings and Joe to guard Salmons, who likes to play in the paint. Getting absolutely nothing from Marvin the whole year, inserting Mo into the starting lineup and moving Joe to the 3 would solve a lot of our problems-mainly defense on the perimeter, and Mo would probably give us more production on offense as well.
Its one game but man that was a beating.

Grimes got 6 picks last year, TD signed him as an undrafted FA.
DeCoud in the 3rd round had himself a good season last season.
Chris Owens played well last year as well, he was snagged in the 3rd by TD.
Don’t know why we’re talking about the Falcons, but I don’t know why you’re attacking TD on Hawks blog. TD’s turned that organization down, and he’s got a core group on both sides of the ball that he’s building around. Interesting stuff I’m seeing, as I’m currently rewatchng this game.
- With the score 4 – 3 Bucks . . and with him just making a jumper on the previous possession . . Bibby takes a very quick 17 foot shot with no one under the goal . . and I mean quick . . like with 6 seconds off the shot clock. The Hawks weren’t even set up yet.
Horford was just getting to the FT line. Smoove was out at the 3 point line. JJ was in the corner out by the 3 point line. And Marvin had barely crossed halfcourt. Bibby’s shot ends up not even hitting the rim, and the Bucks go the other way.
Jennings is going half speed with the Hawks trying to get back. Kurt Thomas is ahead of Jennings and immediately runs toward JJ to set a light moving screen on him. Almost like a rub screen. As JJ tries to get around that, Jennings takes a quick shot of his own with 20 seconds still on the clock. But it’s a wide open 3 that he drains.
northcyde
April 25th, 2010
1:24 pm
Damn
Score is 9 – 5 Bucks.
Smoove tries to force the issue by taking Moute off the dribble, but ends up running into a double team and loses the ball. Bucks race the other way in transition with Jennings having the ball. JJ gets back in time to pick up Jennings.
But guess what? Here comes Kurt Thomas AGAIN .. . this time trailing the play, and sets ANOTHER light screen on JJ. Jennings sees that, and pulls up for another 3 and drains it.
Score is now 12 – 5 bucks
And to Jon Barry’s credit, he correctly identifies that as a “transition pick and roll”, citing that there was no one to switch off to Jennings. And he’s right. He mentioned on the first 3 point make, that Milwaukee doesn’t necessarily want to play against the set Hawks halfcourt defense, because we may not know who to pick up.
The only possible player in the area when Jennings took that 2nd three . . was Smoove. But he had his back to Jennings, trying to pick up where his own man was. Horford was all the way down on the low block, expecting Thomas to eventually come down there.

Very next possession.
Hawks set up in their halfcourt offense, but it eventually ends up in an ISO situation for JJ. He misses a 17 foot jumper, and the Bucks go the other way. And I be damn if they didn’t try to do the SAME THING AGAIN !!
The difference, is that instead of Horford running all the way down on the block, he’s running with Thomas, enabling him to at least be in position to guard Jennings at the top of the key. So when screen on Smoove ( who had initially picked up Jennings in transition ) happened, Horford is there to pick up Jennings off the switch.
Horford plays good defense on Jennings, who is reluctant to take a jumper over Horford, and can’t get by him to get into the lane. The ball eventually ends up in Salmons hands. Thomas comes over to screen JJ, but Smoove picks up Salmons off the screen. As Salmons drives baseline, JJ cheats down to help double Salmons, who passes out to Thomas for a wide open 18 footer.
Smoove gestures to JJ as if to say . . why did you do that?

On that last play, people simply have to understand the personnel out on the court. That’s Kurt Thomas’ shot. Can’t leave him open like that.
Next possession, Smoove receives a pass from JJ, but he misses a point blank shot. He may have gotten fouled, but it was no call.
I tell you what folks, the Bucks are screening THE HELL out of JJ when they are on offense.
Once again, the culprit is Kurt Thomas. JJ was following Salmons without the ball, and Kurt sets a screen on JJ that he tries to get around. But JJ did something real silly, he grabbed a hold to Salmons as he was receiving the ball. Salmons then takes a quick jumper and nails it, with JJ getting a foul called on him.
The Hawks aren’t talking on defense, and look confused as hell on those switches. Whomever is picking up Kurt Thomas down on the other end needs to STAY WITH HIM.
Before Salmons received that pass, Smoove was initially on Thomas, and Bibby on Delfino. As Delfino cut through the lane, Bibby was trailing him. But Smoove trailed him too . . and actually pointed at Bibby to stay in the lane to go toward Salmons coming around the pick and roll. But Smoove should’ve never switched in the first place. There was no need for him to switch that out in that situation.
Kurt Thomas initially killed this team, simply by setting screens for shooters. His screening, combined with nobody on Thomas, was literally responsible for 2 threes, a three point play, and an open jumpshot by him.
LOL . . . that’s 11 points that you can directly attribute to Kurt Thomas. Unbelievable.
northcyde

JJ is a culprit in all of this too. There is no reason for him to try to help double everybody, leaving shooters open out on the perimeter.
Stackhouse has Crawford posted up on the baseline. Big time advantage for Stack. But JJ casually goes toward Stackhouse, trying to play in between Stack and Jennings, who is out at the top of the 3 point arc. Once JJ shades more toward Stack, Jerry simply passes the ball out to Jennings, who knocks down another 3.
24 – 11 Bucks . . . and Milwaukee has made 9 out of their first 11 shots.

Alll about defense folks. I wonder how much talking this team does out on the court?
And the Bucks purposely tried to play fast once we missed shots, taking the first available open shot.
Milwaukee made a ton of shots in that 1st quarter though. Shot 68%
Wow @ Josh Smith’s awareness on defense in that 1st quarter. And JJ was only slightly better. Both have to do a better job at knowing who you are leaving open on the perimeter.
Toward the end of the quarter, there was a play in which Ilyasova starts out down on the block, but drifts out toward the 3 point line. As Salmons was driving down the left side ( with Horford on him ), Smoove stays down on the block to help double Salmons. So Salmons just casually tosses the ball out to a wide open Ilyasova who knocks down a 3 ( with Smoove jogging out toward him as he shot the ball ).
Gotta do better Josh. Know who you are guarding. Stay with your man, unless you’re being screened off of him.

Yeah, if this team is not getting stops and getting out on the break, they struggle more often than not.
JJ has the potential to be a lock down defender, but I wonder if on nights when he feels like he has to shoulder the offensive load, if he slackens up on defense.
Do you think it would have been worth it to go from switching everything to playing straight-up man to man, since we seemed confused, and we’re communicating on defense?

O’Brien. I don’t know. Because if we play them straight up, then whomever Bibby or Crawford is guarding, will have a field day. But that still won’t solve the problem about what happens when one of the Hawks are screened off.
The purpose of the whole switching defense concept, is to eliminate the effectiveness of the pick and roll and pick and pop offenses. But I don’t know what they were doing in this game. There wasn’t much ball pressure at all, and almost all of their double teams were weak as hell. When you add that to the brain lapses we had in that 1st quarter, it was a recipe of disaster.
Just no energy and effort out of that team. Even the Mo Evans brick lay-up. That is usually a play that Mo looks to dunk the basketball, not lay it up.

The point is we won the game and when he put up 3 rebounds in 31 minutes we lost. So we will have to have a strong showing in the middle to win games in the latter rounds, which is T.S.’s point!

The frontline simply has to play smarter. We ask Smoove and Horford to do a lot for this team. I think everyone knows that. But they can’t take nights off or have mental lapses. If they do, the result is what happened last night.
Man . . . Smoove to A LOT of plays off last night though. It’s like someone kidnapped that dude, when you rewatch that game. He got a ton of offensive rebounds, but that’s about the only thing he did well last night. Just no effort out of him for some reason. Very uncharacteristic of him.

northcyde,
Bibby and Crawford are horrible defenders, so I can see what you’re saying about them playing man to man. But even if their guy goes off, so be it.
I think it would be worth giving it a try when the players are slacking on the switching, because even if Jennings gets 50, they would still have chance to slow down everybody else.
TS,
I agree that it would be nice to have a prototypical center, but until Rick Sund figures out a way to get us one, Horford is all we have.

You still didn’t answer my hypothetical.
I had a reason for asking that way.
Please understand…I agree…to a certain point…with you.
We need anothr Big, a [5]. Free agency = maybe another shot @ Haywood.
I agree we need a Big, that is a “defensive goaltender”.
‘Please’, try, and open your mind to the possibility of a frontcout of:
Al + Josh & a Big playing together.
The ‘Big’ doesn’t necessarily have to start.
Kinda’ like Jamal doesn’t start / but he finishes.
Don’t pigeonhole Josh as a [4], just let him be
an athlete/basketball player. [Ron Artest]
[THIS IS FOR TS & EVERYONE !]
Wdsn’s switching def., it doesn’t matter what # you are.
Bibby’s gonna end up on Salmons anyway.
Offensively:
People say Josh can’t play the [3], He’s already playing the [5],
in case yawl havent noticed & Al is playin more outside / shooting
more & more mid-range jumpers. Josh is playing more & more on the block.
Who’s to say we couldn’t find a stretch [5] that could block some shots [defend the rim] yet switch off on guards defensively and still
shoot from outside the arc effectively streching the def. for Josh & Al.

Grandad,
Interesting thoughts and I do firmly believe that if the Hawks had a “stretch 5″ or another versatile 4/5 guy, they would put said person in the lineup with Josh and Al.
As far as last nights game is concerned, It was really bad and Al and Josh did not play well. However, I fully expect them to bounce back in game 4 because those two have been bouncing back after bad games all season long. What is more concerning is how the rest of will fare. Guys who, let’s be honest, don’t normally make much of an impact. If we’re totally objective and honest about it, they were terrible in last nights game also, not just Josh and Al. How are the “other guys” going to respond in game 4? We shall see.

@Mike Is Back I agree! People act like just because we lost one game, the series is over and we’re down. Good thing for home court advantage because if we did NOT have it, I don’t know what the Hawks will do. Notice how the Hawks play well against better opponents than weaker ones. I believe the break kind of threw ATL off a little.
I know you can not make excuses esp. for a 3rd seed team, but it’s the NBA playoffs. A team is going to at least try to win. No team is going to just let you sweep them unless you just say there’s no hope. HELLO: Did anyone see the Heat/Celtics game 4 earlier. The Heat did not give up. The Bucks did the same.
Only thing that is difference in the Hawks loss last night is that we didn’t fight back cause once we got the lead down to 9 we did not hold onto it like the Bucks did. When the Hawks are down, they need to continue to play. If they get down like this again by 20+ points, I seriously think they need to just call timeout & just continue to play HARD, DETERMINED, FOCUSED, COMMITTED & FOCUSED!! They need to play like there is no tomorrow because if they don’t, then Orlando nor the league or commentators will take them seriously.
We need to take game 4, so we can go home to Philips and take game 5 & let it be instead of taking it to 6 games because we need all the rest we can get it. Besides we need to get 5 games cause Magic just may sweep the Bobcats if not, they will take game 5.
We are a veteran playoff team, the loss was unacceptable, passed embarrassing. We need to play like we did in game 1 & 2. Get back to that cause thats what got us our two wins. If we play like we do at home, then we will be 3-1. See how the Cavaliers bounced back from their game 3 loss to the Bulls. We need to do that.
I still believe in the Hawks, BUT does anyone else? Make people who don’t believe in you do! We need this game tomorrow & give us hope. And no one needs to stay focused on this loss esp. Hawks, they need to think about and be ready and just stay calm for tomorrow’s game. And don’t think about Game 5. The Hawks need to think about game 4 ONLY!!!!!!!!

Lebron James
Press Conference
He commented that antwan Jamison & josh Smith are not PF’s but that’s the posiotion they play on their teams to help their teams be sucessfull. He further stated that Josh is too big to be guarded by a #3, because he can put the ball on the floor and blow past them or hour can post up the smaller #3.
LeBron also said that there isn’t a PF in the league who can keep up with his speed & quickness if he attacks the rim. At the 5? They’re too slow & can’t stop him either. He called Josh a Hybrid that can do everything well. (That was not a qoute, just a re-collection of the presser)
He actually was asked about Jamison’s un-orthodoxed style of play & brought of Josh’s game & similarities.
I thougjt that was interesting to see what other star players think of Josh. He is definitely a SPECIAL player.
I also appreciated Jamison’s press conference in saying that he doesn’t need to score to affect the game. But, the one thing that can never happen is to be on the court and do nothing to help your team win.
Diving for loose balls, rebounding, setting screens, etc. Which made me think of Marvin,

Is like a swiss army knife – he can do it all! Because he blocks so many shots at the rim – he covers up
For the center, or maybe even steals some blocks from the center position at least on the weak side of the play anyways.
I posted a pretty good comment on LeBron’s press conference where he described Josh as a HYBRID player who plays the PF on his team and how that makes him unstoppable & un-orthodoxed when opponents try to game plan for the Hawks – in so many words. I know you guys will watch that presser today from LeBron.

Truth-serum,
Yes, Al had an atrocious game that cannot be defended in my mind. An absolutely awful game. Maybe his worst all year.
But in three games he has NINE blocked shots. Your BIGGEST gripe about him has historically been “He ranks 25th in blocked shots” (even when he ranks 17th).
Horford is currently tied for second (with LeBron) in blocks for the playoffs.
That’s among ALL players.
And you can’t even acknowledge it.

Here’s some Horford reality:
Playoff rankings for centers:
Scoring: Tied for 1st (with Nene and Noah)
Rebounds: 7th (despite a 3 rebound game) Note: There are 16 starting centers in the playoffs.
Blocks: 2nd
Steals: Tied for 1st (with Noah)
FG %: 2nd
FT %: 3rd
Those are some pretty impressive rankings. All found at http://www.nba.com/statistics/player/
In fairness, Horford IS playing against their second-string center. So he SHOULD have good numbers (and he SHOULD have had MANY more than 3 rebounds).
But it should be acknowledged that he is, other than last night, having a good series. And that he was a large part of our two wins.

Grand Daddy – I see you are back to your old tricks. I of-course enjoy your intelligent diatribes, after a good day of golfing, at least the parts that make sense and I understand. My friend Wooden did his best, but when your so called center gets 3 rebounds, and 2 points in first half, no amount of screaming will help. Al decided to take the day off.
Did you notice he played better in 2nd half? Do you credit Wooden for that, or just think it happened coincidentally?
Wooden is not the problem. Put your personal prejudice aside and be rational. Be specific. Otherwise you are just sounding like Wabe who is a lost soul any way.
I see you also believe we lack a true center. That is the root of Hawks defensive issues. I have a solution, allow Al to become a small forward (he has a relatively dependable outside jumper), get a real center and play Marvin off the bench.
What you say Zaza gets upset? I say Zaza can always caddy for me. He may be better at that than playing basketball. ahh i forgot, he has a restaurant and spends 90% of his time there as opposed to on a court getting his fat body in shape.
No matter, hope your Sunday has been well, and you enjoyed our beautiful weather and got a round of golf in.

Truth-serum,
First, thanks for at least acknowledging that you want him to succeed. Most times it doesn’t seem so, from your language about him. I don’t understand wanting someone to succeed but mocking their name, but hey, to each his own.
You said this: “You have to deny the interior basket ,alter shots and force the opposition to become a jump shooting team if you are going to compete for a championship. Period.”
I DO think that is important. However, it’s NOT everything. Let’s look at the last two Champs, and their Finals stats, and here’s what you get:
2008: Boston over LA in 6 games. Kendrick Perkins averaged 0.83 blocks per game while KG averaged 1.0. Both less than Al’s season average this year (1.11 / gm). Yet they beat the Lakers in six.
2009: LA over Orlando in 5 games. Pau Gasol averaged a pretty good 1.8 blocks per game while Andrew Bynum averaged 0.6
So don’t put TOO much onto blocking shots and protecting the paint. Did it help the Magic to have the best shot blocker in the league last year? No, they lost in 5 games. Despite Howard’s 5 blocks / game average.
LOL, they even lost game 4 when he blocked NINE shots. So, while blocked shots are important for the message they send, it’s NOT the most important defensive stat, IMHO.
And did you see the link that Najeh posted to the Raptors site? Here’s the link if you want to see it: http://www.raptorblog.com/100422b.php
It shows Horford as the best post defender in the league against his man in the post. Same as northcyde’s earlier stats showed. You can try to refute it all you want. That toothpaste is out of the tube.

AS JOSH SMITH GOES,SO GOES THE HAWKS?
Lets look at j-smoove,and no im not gonna put up long stats, just put up da link and let peeps check it out..
Right now his leaping ability compliments his defense, because he is able to get a great lift off the floor to help him lead all forwards in blocks and become the runner up defensive player of the game..
He is great at taking rebounds and heading up court to start more transition opps that even bibbs does..And lets not forget he is a decent passer and great finisher as well..
On the flip side,he has a high dribble, and is easily turnover prone on the breaks, when he should just give the ball up to his guards..
Teams use to bait him to settle for the long jumper, and he fell into the trap..Now this year he is playing like an all-star,and if it takes someone to tell him something in his ear,to get him fired up and play just as well on the road as he does at home then heck,i’ll do it!!
Hey J-Smoove,you are not an all star!!
they did not pick u….they looked right over you..
you need to remind them of who you are and not picking you to be on the greatest stage in the nba next to the finals was the biggest mistake of the history of the NBA..
remember how people now look back and say,”who the heck was the knuckle head coach who cut michael jordan in high school??
you need to give the world a reason to ask that question now for you and to the fans and the nba coaches..
also remember something else my friend..
its fine to be an all star..many stars are made when they become all stars..
BUT……………………….
SUPERSTARS ARE MADE IN THE PLAYOFFS!!

I think Truth wants Horford to be a Josh Smith like weak side defender, as well as a solid post player. Well . . . maybe he can’t cover the paint and the weak side like Smoove can. That’s still not an indictment on Horford, and the job he does do when guarding his own man on the defensive end.
To me, it’s more important for Horford to try to dominate on the boards on a nightly basis, than to be some shot blocking deterrent at the rim or a great weak side help defender.
The 3 rebounds is inexcusable though. I want to see Horford try to go out and get 23 rebounds next game. Or at least split the difference, and get 13.
When JJ and Marvin leads us in defensive rebounding ( 5 ) in a game . . and Horford and Smoove grabs 4 total defensive rebounds between them . . . that’s a problem. No way we’re winning a game when that happens.

Try & think of Josh, Al, Joe & Jamal + one as five athletes functioning as a single *organism. [or unit] (use any *metaphor you please)
Don’t put a # on them – now just let them play basketball.

They will learn to space themselves, they really already know. They have been learning ea. other for 3, 4, 5 yrs. now.
Chemistry has been developed and that is why I don’t think Joe will

This is why we should be relunctant to trade Bibby, Marv or Zaza.
**Childress left and we should probably trade his rights if given the chance. Because he left – on his own.
TS – try and realize that Josh and Al love and enjoy playing together as teammates. You can see it.
**NOTE (Marv was close friends with Childress/thats why disrupting
chemistry is dangerous/Marv was better when Childress was here)
So…yes Al needs some help…but not @ ‘HIS’ [Al's] expense!
Lets get him some help to make both he & the Hawks better next yr.

Heh heh.
From today’s Daily Dime on ESPN:
For Chauncey Billups, the fact that the Nuggets play a lot of one-on-one ball isn’t an issue, per se. After all, the Nuggets finished the season ranked fifth in offensive efficiency. “The problem with the isolation is not the actual isolation,” Billups said. “It’s the lack of movement.” According to Billups, the Nuggets need to do a better job off the ball to help maximize the one-on-one advantages they have against Utah. “A lack of [movement] just lets one guy play against three or four.”
Sounds like a team we know, doesn’t it?

Unacceptable performance against a team which sans-Bogut is not playoff material.
More classical teams, which play man to man D have real offensive schemes sometimes get away with poor effort simply because they are mechanised and execute stuff which allows them to keep up with inferior teams and eventually man up to close games.
Teams like the Hawks who play the switching D and depend from it being effective to produce easy transition buckets and make runs absolutely cannot win when the effort is not there.
The switching D is only effective when there is maximum (at least high) effort.
We have seen this many times.
I blame the players for the lack of effort but I also blame the coach because his game plan is one dimentional. If it doesn’t work there’s nothing else available.
For the ones who may look at this as an oportunity to say that then the blame is mainly on the players I have this answer:
Woody’s game plan is exactly like comunism.
It is based on the false principle that everyone will contribute equally, willingfuly and all the time for the common good.
Both don’t take into consideration human nature which basically completely overrules that principle.

Is that on the coach, on the players, or a combination of both?
How about them #2 seed Mavericks? With Dirk, Terry, Butler, Haywood and JKidd, they were one of the picks to challenge the Lakers in the West, and now they are on the brink of elimination, down 3-1.
They had a 14 pt 3rd quarter lead, and lost the game. We saw Avery and his Mavericks lose in the first round (twice), and now Rick Carlisle will probably lose in the first round too. Is it coaching? Is it Dirk is too soft?
I’ll say this. I’m glad the Hawks play in the East, because its tough out West.

Good question.
The Mavs just don’t have the right players around Dirk to win it all. Caron Butler is a start. Jason Kidd would have been to complete a Big 3 combo 7 years ago, but at 37 he’s 5 years past his prime.
In order to win it all you need a dominate 1-2 punch, or a Big 3 combo. Right now the Mavs have 2/3 of a Big 3 combo.

The HAWKS have to crowd the shooters and make sure that Smoove and/or Horford are always near the paint. The offensive has to start with Josh in the post and Josh needs to work a lot harder to get and hold position. Bibby needs to be the one delivering him the ball, because Marvin, JJ and Horford haven’t been doing a great job of getting him the ball quickly enough. The Bucks aren’t a great shooting team, but like every team they’re pretty good when they get things going. Lastly, Marvin has to attack the rim. Bucks have no shot blockers and they are worried about Smith/Horford getting offensive rebounds.
GO HAWKS!!!

Also, the HAWKS need to find away to get Crawford going. It appears that the Bucks are crowding him and forcing him to drive instead of pulling up for jumpshots. Basically they’re double-teaming him and he hasn’t responded well. The second unit has to do a better job of moving the ball and creating some more space for him to work. The Bucks are going to run out at every shooter, so the 2nd unit is just going to have to start knocking down shots.

Wabe, Najeh,
I give Woody a hard time for the same thing that Rick is getting blasted for. But I will also admit that coaches have it tough trying to find the right combination. Because if Carlisle played his young, talented and fast rookie, and they lost the game, the media might blast him for not playing his veteran PG.
Wabe

I hear that O’Brien.
It is a bit different for Carlisle at this point though. But, there is one similarity. Both have vet PG’s that have been some of the best in the business, but at their age, it’s pretty tough to ask them to stay in front of the likes of Tony Parker and Brandon Jennings. Both Parker and Jennings are quick, and it’s a tough task for Kidd/Bibby to stay in front of them.
In our case, we’ve neutralized Jennings ability to get into the lane because Horford/Smoove sent the message loud and clear in games 1 and 2 that Jennings wouldn’t get anything easy going to the rim, even if he happens to blow past Bibby.
But, for the Mavs, a team that has a “dominant defender at center”, they can’t seem to stop Parker/Hill/Ginobli from penetrating into the lane and scoring. In other words, they’re screwed. The Spurs are getting to the bucket relentlessly. And for a team that should have a size advantage over them, the Mavs aren’t doing a good job of protecting the paint.
Just think about it, the Spurs have been penetrating and getting buckets towards the rim, whereas the Mavs have become a perimeter team. Dirk continues to settle for fade-away jumpers. Kidd has become a spot-up 3-point shooter. Terry’s been that way forever. Caron’s impact on the team hasn’t been as great as I thought it’d be, but that may be due to the lack of touches.
For all the talk about how Haywood and Butler would make them a tougher team, I don’t see it. They’re still playing soft, scared of contact. If you’re fade-away jumpers aren’t falling, you need to take the ball to the rim and at the least try to draw contact. They’re just settling for jumpers.

The Mavs need someone that’ll get them easy buckets.
Haywood maybe a decent option to help defend some of the bigger 5’s in the league, but he’s not a guy that gets them easy buckets.
Dirk is an MVP-type player in this league. But, even if the guy’s going for 30, it’s usually a tough 30.
Kidd/Terry are just spot-up shooters at this point.
They need someone in the paint that can get them easy buckets.

Same thing about the Hawks. THIS TEAM GETS NO EASY BASKETS. It takes Joe 2 crossovers and an awkward runner where he is fouled twice to get an easy hoop. This team cannot score on the road. We get the Smoove oops at home but not the road

In the case of the Mavs, for the last couple of years they were able to get by with switching Kidd onto the SG and matching up someone like Jason Terry onto opposing PGs. Kidd was after all a great defensive player in his prime. Now it doesn’t even look like Kidd is quick enough to guard SGs, let alone players at his own position.
In the case of the Hawks, as long as they are running the switching D, they will need a point guard who is quick enough to disrupt passing lanes, so that hopefully he can disrupt entry passes before he gets posted up by someone much bigger. Teague can be that guy, but Bibby definitely can’t.

Also, our defense is even tougher when we play 3 on 5. Actually, it’s 3 on 7 because Marvin and Bibby are so bad that they count as players on the other team. I knew Joe would show up because Joe is Joe. I’m surprised at Jamal Crawford because hes a 10-year vet, but he was nervous since it is his first playoff appearance. Horford and Smooth have no excuses, but being it was a road game I can understand why they were uncomfortable. Bottom line: Hawks are in command leading 2-1 and if they snatch tonight game, the HAWKS WILL HAVE A STRANGLEHOLD ON THE SERIES AT 3-1. That will almost certainly give the hawks a 99.9% chance of winning the series. Hawks take it in 6.

HIRE AVERY JOHNSON, CHARLES BARKLEY, DOMINIQUE WILKINS, KENNY SMITH or Byron Scott as the next Hawks head coach. I think either of those candidates (Bozos) would do much better than coach Woodsen. Woody is completely clueless. Woody is allowing Marvin Williams to start and Marvin is playing as though he is deaf, dumb and blind.
