Hawks Squawks Game 3: Bucks 107, Hawks 89

Milwaukee– The Hawks got their butts kicked. The details of the beatdown seem almost inconsequential in light of the aggregate effect of this blistering in the Bradley Center. The Bucks never got it handed to them like this at Philips Arena, where at least they fought back when the Hawks blitzed them.

– Forget the Xs and Os for a minute and consider the Hawks’ lack of intensity and poise. “It’s unacceptable to get blown out like this,” J.J. said. “We’ll look at the tape and correct our mistakes but more than anything it’s about coming out and playing with more effort.”

– The Hawks spouted some of those playoff cliches: The Bucks simply did what they had to do, the Hawks still own homecourt advantage, they still have a chance to win Game 4 on Monday for a road split. All of that is theoretically true but have the Hawks shown an indication that they can find the mettle it will take to win the next game? It would have been one thing if the Hawks competed and lost but failing to show up is something else.

– “Honestly I have no idea [why],” Joe said. “We knew what to expect and we knew what was at stake. For us to come out the way we played, that’s on the starters. It was unacceptable. Give the Bucks a lot of credit, they ot their team off to a fast start and never looked back.”

– Then again, the Hawks can’t afford to beat themselves up about this for too long. “I’m not taking anything away from the Bucks, they played extremely well tonight,” Woody said. “They did what they were supposed to do but we still hold a 2-1 lead and we still have an opportunity to steal one (in Milwaukee).”

– The Hawks have one road playoff victory in their last three postseasons. Their problems on the road continue to keep them from reaching the level of Cleveland, Orlando (which is looking to sweep Charlotte) and Boston. “We’ve struggled on the road even during the regular season,” J.J. said. “We’ve not been a great road team. We’ve got to find a way.”

– They can start by going back to feeding Smoove and Al inside. Woody had said he was surprised the Bucks didn’t show more resistance in the post in Game 2 after they had success pushing Josh and Al out in the second half of Game 1. The Bucks didn’t make that mistake again.

– “It’s no secret that in the first two games they sort of owned us in the paint,” Scott Skiles said. “We were able to take a few things away tonight.”

– The Hawks waited too long to get Al involved but he also wasn’t as sharp when deciding whether to pick-and-pop or go to the hole. Smoove just wasn’t at all in rhythm.

– The Hawks didn’t help matters by missing a bunch of shots near the rim. That’s how they had 20 offensive rebounds and managed only 12 second-chance points. “They got a lot of offensive rebounds but didn’t turn them into points this time,” Skiles said.

– The Hawks’ pick-and-roll defense was awful. After solid defensive efforts in Games 1 and 2 the Hawks were back to those familiar bad switches and lax closeouts. That meant layups and open 3-pointers all night for the Bucks.

– “Give them credit, they came out and made shots,” Marvin said. “At the same time we didn’t defend the way we usually do.” Marvin’s 1 for 7 shooting line looked bad but he had eight rebounds and probably was the best guy on closeouts.

– There were a few times when the Hawks were close to breaking through and needed patience and ball movement. Instead, J.J. went iso.

– The bench was better, I suppose, though does it really matter in a game like this? Or I guess I should say Zaza was better. Jamal (5 for 13) still can’t get into a rhythm.

– It was a nightmare game for Smoove. He smiled when Bucks fans heckled him near the bench as he sat watching the merciful end of the blowout loss. There wasn’t much he could say, though he was unapologetic afterward.

– “I didn’t say anything about their fans,” he said. “I didn’t say anything that wasn’t true. Some people have different opinions. I gave my opinion and I’m entitled to it. You asked me a question, I gave an honest answer.”

– Hey, I didn’t ask the question to begin with. Milwaukee media folks kept crediting me, too, but it wasn’t me!

– Win Game 4 and the Hawks can forget this one. Mo’s formula for doing it: “Go back to getting the ball inside, get quality shots and play defense first and foremost.”

– I’m out, Hawks fans.

“You should know by now not to argue with TS. where was He when horford had 20, 10 and 3 blocks in game 2?”

The point is we won the game and when he put up 3 rebounds in 31 minutes we lost. So we will have to have a strong showing in the middle to win games in the latter rounds, which is T.S.’s point!

The frontline simply has to play smarter. We ask Smoove and Horford to do a lot for this team. I think everyone knows that. But they can’t take nights off or have mental lapses. If they do, the result is what happened last night.

Man . . . Smoove to A LOT of plays off last night though. It’s like someone kidnapped that dude, when you rewatch that game. He got a ton of offensive rebounds, but that’s about the only thing he did well last night. Just no effort out of him for some reason. Very uncharacteristic of him.

northcyde,

Bibby and Crawford are horrible defenders, so I can see what you’re saying about them playing man to man. But even if their guy goes off, so be it.

I think it would be worth giving it a try when the players are slacking on the switching, because even if Jennings gets 50, they would still have chance to slow down everybody else.

TS,

I agree that it would be nice to have a prototypical center, but until Rick Sund figures out a way to get us one, Horford is all we have.

T.S.

You still didn’t answer my hypothetical.
I had a reason for asking that way.
Please understand…I agree…to a certain point…with you.
We need anothr Big, a [5]. Free agency = maybe another shot @ Haywood.
I agree we need a Big, that is a “defensive goaltender”.
‘Please’, try, and open your mind to the possibility of a frontcout of:
Al + Josh & a Big playing together.
The ‘Big’ doesn’t necessarily have to start.
Kinda’ like Jamal doesn’t start / but he finishes.
Don’t pigeonhole Josh as a [4], just let him be
an athlete/basketball player. [Ron Artest]

[THIS IS FOR TS & EVERYONE !]

Wdsn’s switching def., it doesn’t matter what # you are.
Bibby’s gonna end up on Salmons anyway.
Offensively:
People say Josh can’t play the [3], He’s already playing the [5],
in case yawl havent noticed & Al is playin more outside / shooting
more & more mid-range jumpers. Josh is playing more & more on the block.
Who’s to say we couldn’t find a stretch [5] that could block some shots [defend the rim] yet switch off on guards defensively and still
shoot from outside the arc effectively streching the def. for Josh & Al.

All you Skiles lovers…Skiles is a good coach…but he had to endure some failure to get to that point. DON’T FORGET THIS IS HIS THIRD TEAM. Funny he was saying the same about his team when they played in Phillips…now he some kind of genius…jez!!

IT WAS A BLOW OUT LOSS…but it only counts as one game. In the playoff, anything can happen if you are not ready play. That’s why you work hard during the regular season…to get home court advantage.

How many of you geniuses had the Thunder tied up with the Lakers at this point of the series? So, based on the standards of the Lakers…should their coach be fired too…hmmmmmm?????

Grandad,

Interesting thoughts and I do firmly believe that if the Hawks had a “stretch 5″ or another versatile 4/5 guy, they would put said person in the lineup with Josh and Al.

As far as last nights game is concerned, It was really bad and Al and Josh did not play well. However, I fully expect them to bounce back in game 4 because those two have been bouncing back after bad games all season long. What is more concerning is how the rest of will fare. Guys who, let’s be honest, don’t normally make much of an impact. If we’re totally objective and honest about it, they were terrible in last nights game also, not just Josh and Al. How are the “other guys” going to respond in game 4? We shall see.

@Mike Is Back I agree! People act like just because we lost one game, the series is over and we’re down. Good thing for home court advantage because if we did NOT have it, I don’t know what the Hawks will do. Notice how the Hawks play well against better opponents than weaker ones. I believe the break kind of threw ATL off a little.

I know you can not make excuses esp. for a 3rd seed team, but it’s the NBA playoffs. A team is going to at least try to win. No team is going to just let you sweep them unless you just say there’s no hope. HELLO: Did anyone see the Heat/Celtics game 4 earlier. The Heat did not give up. The Bucks did the same.

Only thing that is difference in the Hawks loss last night is that we didn’t fight back cause once we got the lead down to 9 we did not hold onto it like the Bucks did. When the Hawks are down, they need to continue to play. If they get down like this again by 20+ points, I seriously think they need to just call timeout & just continue to play HARD, DETERMINED, FOCUSED, COMMITTED & FOCUSED!! They need to play like there is no tomorrow because if they don’t, then Orlando nor the league or commentators will take them seriously.

We need to take game 4, so we can go home to Philips and take game 5 & let it be instead of taking it to 6 games because we need all the rest we can get it. Besides we need to get 5 games cause Magic just may sweep the Bobcats if not, they will take game 5.

We are a veteran playoff team, the loss was unacceptable, passed embarrassing. We need to play like we did in game 1 & 2. Get back to that cause thats what got us our two wins. If we play like we do at home, then we will be 3-1. See how the Cavaliers bounced back from their game 3 loss to the Bulls. We need to do that.

I still believe in the Hawks, BUT does anyone else? Make people who don’t believe in you do! We need this game tomorrow & give us hope. And no one needs to stay focused on this loss esp. Hawks, they need to think about and be ready and just stay calm for tomorrow’s game. And don’t think about Game 5. The Hawks need to think about game 4 ONLY!!!!!!!!

Lebron James
Press Conference

He commented that antwan Jamison & josh Smith are not PF’s but that’s the posiotion they play on their teams to help their teams be sucessfull. He further stated that Josh is too big to be guarded by a #3, because he can put the ball on the floor and blow past them or hour can post up the smaller #3.
LeBron also said that there isn’t a PF in the league who can keep up with his speed & quickness if he attacks the rim. At the 5? They’re too slow & can’t stop him either. He called Josh a Hybrid that can do everything well. (That was not a qoute, just a re-collection of the presser)

He actually was asked about Jamison’s un-orthodoxed style of play & brought of Josh’s game & similarities.

I thougjt that was interesting to see what other star players think of Josh. He is definitely a SPECIAL player.

I also appreciated Jamison’s press conference in saying that he doesn’t need to score to affect the game. But, the one thing that can never happen is to be on the court and do nothing to help your team win.
Diving for loose balls, rebounding, setting screens, etc. Which made me think of Marvin,
Has anyone ever seen him set a screen for his teammate?

Josh

Is like a swiss army knife – he can do it all! Because he blocks so many shots at the rim – he covers up
For the center, or maybe even steals some blocks from the center position at least on the weak side of the play anyways.

I posted a pretty good comment on LeBron’s press conference where he described Josh as a HYBRID player who plays the PF on his team and how that makes him unstoppable & un-orthodoxed when opponents try to game plan for the Hawks – in so many words. I know you guys will watch that presser today from LeBron.

Really good stuff! LeBron is as mentally tough as he is physically.

Truth-serum,

Yes, Al had an atrocious game that cannot be defended in my mind. An absolutely awful game. Maybe his worst all year.

But in three games he has NINE blocked shots. Your BIGGEST gripe about him has historically been “He ranks 25th in blocked shots” (even when he ranks 17th).

Horford is currently tied for second (with LeBron) in blocks for the playoffs.

That’s among ALL players.

And you can’t even acknowledge it.

Pitiful.

Here’s some Horford reality:

Playoff rankings for centers:

Scoring: Tied for 1st (with Nene and Noah)

Rebounds: 7th (despite a 3 rebound game) Note: There are 16 starting centers in the playoffs.

Blocks: 2nd

Steals: Tied for 1st (with Noah)

FG %: 2nd

FT %: 3rd

Those are some pretty impressive rankings. All found at http://www.nba.com/statistics/player/

In fairness, Horford IS playing against their second-string center. So he SHOULD have good numbers (and he SHOULD have had MANY more than 3 rebounds).

But it should be acknowledged that he is, other than last night, having a good series. And that he was a large part of our two wins.

Grand Daddy – I see you are back to your old tricks. I of-course enjoy your intelligent diatribes, after a good day of golfing, at least the parts that make sense and I understand. My friend Wooden did his best, but when your so called center gets 3 rebounds, and 2 points in first half, no amount of screaming will help. Al decided to take the day off.
Did you notice he played better in 2nd half? Do you credit Wooden for that, or just think it happened coincidentally?

Wooden is not the problem. Put your personal prejudice aside and be rational. Be specific. Otherwise you are just sounding like Wabe who is a lost soul any way.

I see you also believe we lack a true center. That is the root of Hawks defensive issues. I have a solution, allow Al to become a small forward (he has a relatively dependable outside jumper), get a real center and play Marvin off the bench.

What you say Zaza gets upset? I say Zaza can always caddy for me. He may be better at that than playing basketball. ahh i forgot, he has a restaurant and spends 90% of his time there as opposed to on a court getting his fat body in shape.

No matter, hope your Sunday has been well, and you enjoyed our beautiful weather and got a round of golf in.

Just for a summary:

In 9 playoff road losses, these are his numbers:

11.2 ppg . . ( 32 – 114 ) 28% FG . . ( 36 – 50 ) 72% FT
6.8 rebs
1.8 asst
1.8 blks
1.1 stls

*****************

His numbers in 8 playoff home wins:

20.4 ppg . . ( 59 – 104 ) 56.7% FG . . ( 41 – 50 ) 82% FT
9.0 rebs
4.0 asst
2.5 blks
1.6 stls

This is incredible actually. I know players tend to play better at home . . but damn. You might see this kind of disparity in a role player, but not usually for a starter. The difference in shooting percentage is mind boggling.

Truth-serum,

First, thanks for at least acknowledging that you want him to succeed. Most times it doesn’t seem so, from your language about him. I don’t understand wanting someone to succeed but mocking their name, but hey, to each his own.

You said this: “You have to deny the interior basket ,alter shots and force the opposition to become a jump shooting team if you are going to compete for a championship. Period.”

I DO think that is important. However, it’s NOT everything. Let’s look at the last two Champs, and their Finals stats, and here’s what you get:

2008: Boston over LA in 6 games. Kendrick Perkins averaged 0.83 blocks per game while KG averaged 1.0. Both less than Al’s season average this year (1.11 / gm). Yet they beat the Lakers in six.

2009: LA over Orlando in 5 games. Pau Gasol averaged a pretty good 1.8 blocks per game while Andrew Bynum averaged 0.6

So don’t put TOO much onto blocking shots and protecting the paint. Did it help the Magic to have the best shot blocker in the league last year? No, they lost in 5 games. Despite Howard’s 5 blocks / game average.

LOL, they even lost game 4 when he blocked NINE shots. So, while blocked shots are important for the message they send, it’s NOT the most important defensive stat, IMHO.

And did you see the link that Najeh posted to the Raptors site? Here’s the link if you want to see it: http://www.raptorblog.com/100422b.php

It shows Horford as the best post defender in the league against his man in the post. Same as northcyde’s earlier stats showed. You can try to refute it all you want. That toothpaste is out of the tube.

AS JOSH SMITH GOES,SO GOES THE HAWKS?
Lets look at j-smoove,and no im not gonna put up long stats, just put up da link and let peeps check it out..
Right now his leaping ability compliments his defense, because he is able to get a great lift off the floor to help him lead all forwards in blocks and become the runner up defensive player of the game..
He is great at taking rebounds and heading up court to start more transition opps that even bibbs does..And lets not forget he is a decent passer and great finisher as well..

On the flip side,he has a high dribble, and is easily turnover prone on the breaks, when he should just give the ball up to his guards..

Teams use to bait him to settle for the long jumper, and he fell into the trap..Now this year he is playing like an all-star,and if it takes someone to tell him something in his ear,to get him fired up and play just as well on the road as he does at home then heck,i’ll do it!!

Hey J-Smoove,you are not an all star!!
they did not pick u….they looked right over you..
you need to remind them of who you are and not picking you to be on the greatest stage in the nba next to the finals was the biggest mistake of the history of the NBA..

remember how people now look back and say,”who the heck was the knuckle head coach who cut michael jordan in high school??
you need to give the world a reason to ask that question now for you and to the fans and the nba coaches..

also remember something else my friend..
its fine to be an all star..many stars are made when they become all stars..

BUT……………………….

SUPERSTARS ARE MADE IN THE PLAYOFFS!!

I think Truth wants Horford to be a Josh Smith like weak side defender, as well as a solid post player. Well . . . maybe he can’t cover the paint and the weak side like Smoove can. That’s still not an indictment on Horford, and the job he does do when guarding his own man on the defensive end.

To me, it’s more important for Horford to try to dominate on the boards on a nightly basis, than to be some shot blocking deterrent at the rim or a great weak side help defender.

The 3 rebounds is inexcusable though. I want to see Horford try to go out and get 23 rebounds next game. Or at least split the difference, and get 13.

When JJ and Marvin leads us in defensive rebounding ( 5 ) in a game . . and Horford and Smoove grabs 4 total defensive rebounds between them . . . that’s a problem. No way we’re winning a game when that happens.

Najara clothes-lined Ginobli and was ejected! Coach said maybe I should play him more, at least he
Played with passion?

People were up 2 – 1 and will win tomorrow! We’ll be 3-1 then. Coqch Woodson didn’t lose that game last-night…the players laid that TURD the size of Stone Mountain, GA.

Yep Jeje . . I’m jobless . . . just like the people who keep tabs on what the f— I’m doing on the internet.

And I said that I post half the time FROM MY PHONE while at my job. You know . . those 21st century inventions in which you can access the internet from your phone, even type on it? LOL . . so that means that my job is pretty easy. But on the weekends, I’m at the house.

If you want me to JeJe, I’ll post from the Nelly/Murphy Lee concert at the club later on, since you like checking up on me. I could give a damn about Nelly, but my lady likes him, so I’ll let her be a groupie tonight.

LOL @ dudes paying attention to what other dudes do. But then again, this is Atlanta.

It is Woody’s fault. He the one that puts folks in the game. Bibby didn’t do sh#t last game but Woody kept his sorry a$$ in the game. Marvin and Horford didn’t do anything either but he kept them in the game. I blame the coach for that. You got a bench you need to use it if your starters ain’t getting the job done.

What those stats listed above indicate to me is that this team relys heavily (and probably too much) on Josh. Not trying to bash anyone, but some other guys really need to step up and stop allowing two or three guys to have to shoulder the load.

Bump – That Fool! (Woe I went back to the ’70’s for that one). LOL!
That guy simply trolls the internet looking for NorthCyde – so, he can get at you.
He needs your attention for some reason. Heck, he might be a punk!

But, don’t worry NCyde, I got your back like a “Bobby – Knight” Tight Red Sweater.

ATTENTION! ATTENTION! Atlanta Hawks: PLAY LIKE THE 3RD SEED. DON’T PLAY LIKE THE 6TH SEED! PLAY LIKE THE 3RD SEED. YOU HAVE THE CHANCE TO CLOSE THIS SERIES OUT AND REST ON WEDNESDAY AT HOME SO MONDAY NIGHT PLAY LIKE THE 3RD SEED OR ELSE BE TIRED AND TAKE THE WORST SHOOTING TEAM IN THE LEAGUE TO SEVEN GAMES!!

HAWKS, HAWKS, HAWKS PLAY LIKE THE 3RD SEED! ITS DISAPPOINTING ENOUGH YOU LOSE YOUR WINNING MENTALITY AND PASSION FOR THE GAME WHEN YOU’RE EVEN DOWN BY 12 POINTS

THIS IS NOT THE HAWKS TEAM BEFORE ALL STAR BREAK WHERE THEY WENT COLD!!

West. Coast teams are getting butt – whippins out there. Not even competing with all the 50 wins teams – I didn’t expect to see so many 3-1 series. Go – Figure! Dallas & Denver laying down!

TigerWoods:

my point was not to bash Wdsn on that occasion this AM, although taking opportunities @ cheap humor never dissuades me from expedience.
if I made it seem as if “our” last game was his [Wdsn's] blame,
then I willingly correct myself.
I do think Bibby got off easy from “our” fans & the Josh/Al tandem
took an unwarranted amount of abuse, given their consistenly strong effort all season.
TW – I hope all is well.
