Milwaukee– The Hawks got their butts kicked. The details of the beatdown seem almost inconsequential in light of the aggregate effect of this blistering in the Bradley Center. The Bucks never got it handed to them like this at Philips Arena, where at least they fought back when the Hawks blitzed them.
– Forget the Xs and Os for a minute and consider the Hawks’ lack of intensity and poise. “It’s unacceptable to get blown out like this,” J.J. said. “We’ll look at the tape and correct our mistakes but more than anything it’s about coming out and playing with more effort.”
– The Hawks spouted some of those playoff cliches: The Bucks simply did what they had to do, the Hawks still own homecourt advantage, they still have a chance to win Game 4 on Monday for a road split. All of that is theoretically true but have the Hawks shown an indication that they can find the mettle it will take to win the next game? It would have been one thing if the Hawks competed and lost but failing to show up is something else.
– “Honestly I have no idea [why],” Joe said. “We knew what to expect and we knew what was at stake. For us to come out the way we played, that’s on the starters. It was unacceptable. Give the Bucks a lot of credit, they ot their team off to a fast start and never looked back.”
– Then again, the Hawks can’t afford to beat themselves up about this for too long. “I’m not taking anything away from the Bucks, they played extremely well tonight,” Woody said. “They did what they were supposed to do but we still hold a 2-1 lead and we still have an opportunity to steal one (in Milwaukee).”
– The Hawks have one road playoff victory in their last three postseasons. Their problems on the road continue to keep them from reaching the level of Cleveland, Orlando (which is looking to sweep Charlotte) and Boston. “We’ve struggled on the road even during the regular season,” J.J. said. “We’ve not been a great road team. We’ve got to find a way.”
– They can start by going back to feeding Smoove and Al inside. Woody had said he was surprised the Bucks didn’t show more resistance in the post in Game 2 after they had success pushing Josh and Al out in the second half of Game 1. The Bucks didn’t make that mistake again.
– “It’s no secret that in the first two games they sort of owned us in the paint,” Scott Skiles said. “We were able to take a few things away tonight.”
– The Hawks waited too long to get Al involved but he also wasn’t as sharp when deciding whether to pick-and-pop or go to the hole. Smoove just wasn’t at all in rhythm.
– The Hawks didn’t help matters by missing a bunch of shots near the rim. That’s how they had 20 offensive rebounds and managed only 12 second-chance points. “They got a lot of offensive rebounds but didn’t turn them into points this time,” Skiles said.
– The Hawks’ pick-and-roll defense was awful. After solid defensive efforts in Games 1 and 2 the Hawks were back to those familiar bad switches and lax closeouts. That meant layups and open 3-pointers all night for the Bucks.
– “Give them credit, they came out and made shots,” Marvin said. “At the same time we didn’t defend the way we usually do.” Marvin’s 1 for 7 shooting line looked bad but he had eight rebounds and probably was the best guy on closeouts.
– There were a few times when the Hawks were close to breaking through and needed patience and ball movement. Instead, J.J. went iso.
– The bench was better, I suppose, though does it really matter in a game like this? Or I guess I should say Zaza was better. Jamal (5 for 13) still can’t get into a rhythm.
– It was a nightmare game for Smoove. He smiled when Bucks fans heckled him near the bench as he sat watching the merciful end of the blowout loss. There wasn’t much he could say, though he was unapologetic afterward.
– “I didn’t say anything about their fans,” he said. “I didn’t say anything that wasn’t true. Some people have different opinions. I gave my opinion and I’m entitled to it. You asked me a question, I gave an honest answer.”
– Hey, I didn’t ask the question to begin with. Milwaukee media folks kept crediting me, too, but it wasn’t me!
– Win Game 4 and the Hawks can forget this one. Mo’s formula for doing it: “Go back to getting the ball inside, get quality shots and play defense first and foremost.”
– I’m out, Hawks fans.

We are fans right? We have been watching this team right? Why is it a surprise and panic that we lost game three like this? So what… They won one game. The real test is for Woodson to make adjustments for the next game. He will, we are mad, so I expect a win Monday. I would have love a sweep, but that is hard for any team to do. We will win in 5. I would love JC to step up though… He is playing horrible. Things will be fine. Stop being over dramatic.

I’ve never been this disgusted with the Hawks. Playing hard should never be a problem, but it is with this group, over and over again. I have never seen a bigger collection of head cases in all my life.
Really, the team should just shut up. I mean, don’t say anything. Al talked about how they would be “playing for our lifes” when they went to Milwaukee. Then they just don’t even bother to try. Josh starts ripping the city, then is a complete nonfactor.
F these guys. Seriously, F them. If they don’t care, why should we? I hope there is nothing but empty seats in Philips on Wednesday. This team does not deserve an ounce of support.
And, I really don’t care what they do on Monday. Saturday told me all I need to know. Those people who always mock this team and say they are a joke. Well, it turns out they were right.
Just a complete joke of a team showing their true colors.

Great job by the Bucks. You’ve got to hand it to Scott Skiles and his staff. It appears that the extra time in between games allowed them to make the necessary adjustments to be competitive. That is what good coaches do.
First, they adjusted by putting mbah ah moute on Smoove instead of delfino. Their logic was probably that they would let Joe get his numbers and try to contain everybody else. This obviously worked. With Smoove having little impact on the offensive end (let alone of the defensive end), the Hawks were clueless offensively and resorted to “iso Joe”. No production from Bibby, Marvin, Smoove, or our entire bench.
Second, our defensive execution was worse then our offense. The Bucks weren’t doing anything so abstract that could have caught us off guard, just simple screens and good ball movement. Our defensive rotations were god awful-especially to the open shooters on the wings and the help in the lane from dribble penetration. Something has to be done about our perimeter defense. Joe Johnson is a great defender but he cant guard Jennings on the perimeter and we all know Bibby cant guard anybody on the perimeter. In the first half alone, three times a screen was set on Joe at the top of the key and as usual Joe was late getting around it which resulted in Jennings with a wide open three and he made all three. No adjustment was made.
It seems the only adjustment Woody ever makes is increasing Joe’s minutes when the situation gets bad. I was lol’ing when Woody had Mo in the game with Joe and yet Joe was still guarding Jennings and Mo was guarding Salmons. Mo’s value lies in defense, particularly on the perimeter. It would seem obvious that Mo would be better able to guard Jennings and Joe to guard Salmons, who likes to play in the paint. Getting absolutely nothing from Marvin the whole year, inserting Mo into the starting lineup and moving Joe to the 3 would solve a lot of our problems-mainly defense on the perimeter, and Mo would probably give us more production on offense as well.
Its one game but man that was a beating.

Woody is Average.
Skiles is on a wholly different level. He actually yells instructions to his players and comes up with plays.
Joe Johnson is great but he can’t do it alone. He also sucks at being a leader, even though he’s been slightly better this playoffs.
This team sort of reminds me of the nuggets, who are kind of hollow and also suck on the road as well.
Hilarious to watch Woody stand there, emitting the “there goes my job, but i still am not going to make any adjustments” face.
These guys have no discipline and that’s in large part the coaches fault. We run 1 play on offense and defense for 48 minutes. I’ve never seen Woody make an adjustment and stick with it.

Why would Ryan not get better?
And you didn’t like the Curtis Lofton pick?
Grimes got 6 picks last year, TD signed him as an undrafted FA.
DeCoud in the 3rd round had himself a good season last season.
Chris Owens played well last year as well, he was snagged in the 3rd by TD.
Don’t know why we’re talking about the Falcons, but I don’t know why you’re attacking TD on Hawks blog. TD’s turned that organization down, and he’s got a core group on both sides of the ball that he’s building around. You can add Weatherspoon to that group, a vocal LB that could potentially be the face of this defense in the coming years.
But, we can take this to the Falcons blog.

Interesting stuff I’m seeing, as I’m currently rewatchng this game.
- With the score 4 – 3 Bucks . . and with him just making a jumper on the previous possession . . Bibby takes a very quick 17 foot shot with no one under the goal . . and I mean quick . . like with 6 seconds off the shot clock. The Hawks weren’t even set up yet.
Horford was just getting to the FT line. Smoove was out at the 3 point line. JJ was in the corner out by the 3 point line. And Marvin had barely crossed halfcourt. Bibby’s shot ends up not even hitting the rim, and the Bucks go the other way.
Jennings is going half speed with the Hawks trying to get back. Kurt Thomas is ahead of Jennings and immediately runs toward JJ to set a light moving screen on him. Almost like a rub screen. As JJ tries to get around that, Jennings takes a quick shot of his own with 20 seconds still on the clock. But it’s a wide open 3 that he drains.
northcyde
April 25th, 2010
1:24 pm
Damn
Score is 9 – 5 Bucks.
Smoove tries to force the issue by taking Moute off the dribble, but ends up running into a double team and loses the ball. Bucks race the other way in transition with Jennings having the ball. JJ gets back in time to pick up Jennings.
But guess what? Here comes Kurt Thomas AGAIN .. . this time trailing the play, and sets ANOTHER light screen on JJ. Jennings sees that, and pulls up for another 3 and drains it.
Score is now 12 – 5 bucks
And to Jon Barry’s credit, he correctly identifies that as a “transition pick and roll”, citing that there was no one to switch off to Jennings. And he’s right. He mentioned on the first 3 point make, that Milwaukee doesn’t necessarily want to play against the set Hawks halfcourt defense, because we may not know who to pick up.
The only possible player in the area when Jennings took that 2nd three . . was Smoove. But he had his back to Jennings, trying to pick up where his own man was. Horford was all the way down on the low block, expecting Thomas to eventually come down there.

Very next possession.
Hawks set up in their halfcourt offense, but it eventually ends up in an ISO situation for JJ. He misses a 17 foot jumper, and the Bucks go the other way. And I be damn if they didn’t try to do the SAME THING AGAIN !!
The difference, is that instead of Horford running all the way down on the block, he’s running with Thomas, enabling him to at least be in position to guard Jennings at the top of the key. So when screen on Smoove ( who had initially picked up Jennings in transition ) happened, Horford is there to pick up Jennings off the switch.
Horford plays good defense on Jennings, who is reluctant to take a jumper over Horford, and can’t get by him to get into the lane. The ball eventually ends up in Salmons hands. Thomas comes over to screen JJ, but Smoove picks up Salmons off the screen. As Salmons drives baseline, JJ cheats down to help double Salmons, who passes out to Thomas for a wide open 18 footer.
Smoove gestures to JJ as if to say . . why did you do that?
Score: 14 – 5 Bucks

On that last play, people simply have to understand the personnel out on the court. That’s Kurt Thomas’ shot. Can’t leave him open like that.
Next possession, Smoove receives a pass from JJ, but he misses a point blank shot. He may have gotten fouled, but it was no call.
I tell you what folks, the Bucks are screening THE HELL out of JJ when they are on offense.
Once again, the culprit is Kurt Thomas. JJ was following Salmons without the ball, and Kurt sets a screen on JJ that he tries to get around. But JJ did something real silly, he grabbed a hold to Salmons as he was receiving the ball. Salmons then takes a quick jumper and nails it, with JJ getting a foul called on him.
The Hawks aren’t talking on defense, and look confused as hell on those switches. Whomever is picking up Kurt Thomas down on the other end needs to STAY WITH HIM.
Before Salmons received that pass, Smoove was initially on Thomas, and Bibby on Delfino. As Delfino cut through the lane, Bibby was trailing him. But Smoove trailed him too . . and actually pointed at Bibby to stay in the lane to go toward Salmons coming around the pick and roll. But Smoove should’ve never switched in the first place. There was no need for him to switch that out in that situation.
Kurt Thomas initially killed this team, simply by setting screens for shooters. His screening, combined with nobody on Thomas, was literally responsible for 2 threes, a three point play, and an open jumpshot by him.
LOL . . . that’s 11 points that you can directly attribute to Kurt Thomas. Unbelievable.
northcyde

JJ is a culprit in all of this too. There is no reason for him to try to help double everybody, leaving shooters open out on the perimeter.
Stackhouse has Crawford posted up on the baseline. Big time advantage for Stack. But JJ casually goes toward Stackhouse, trying to play in between Stack and Jennings, who is out at the top of the 3 point arc. Once JJ shades more toward Stack, Jerry simply passes the ball out to Jennings, who knocks down another 3.
24 – 11 Bucks . . . and Milwaukee has made 9 out of their first 11 shots.

Jeje,
“This team last night looked like the Hawks I usually can expect — horrendous defense, 3 on 5 the whole game with Bibby and Marvin doing nothing. Seriously: can Marvin convert a fast-break layup? Why the hell is this guy always on the ground? WTF did Bibby do last night? Marvin does nothing all game, hoping to hide behind the other superior starters – then he picks up garbage points in the 4th.”
I have never seen a guy with his size and wingspan who can’t finish. His was on a one on one break with Jennings and he ended up on the ground. Amazing.

Alll about defense folks. I wonder how much talking this team does out on the court?
And the Bucks purposely tried to play fast once we missed shots, taking the first available open shot.
Milwaukee made a ton of shots in that 1st quarter though. Shot 68%
Wow @ Josh Smith’s awareness on defense in that 1st quarter. And JJ was only slightly better. Both have to do a better job at knowing who you are leaving open on the perimeter.
Toward the end of the quarter, there was a play in which Ilyasova starts out down on the block, but drifts out toward the 3 point line. As Salmons was driving down the left side ( with Horford on him ), Smoove stays down on the block to help double Salmons. So Salmons just casually tosses the ball out to a wide open Ilyasova who knocks down a 3 ( with Smoove jogging out toward him as he shot the ball ).
Gotta do better Josh. Know who you are guarding. Stay with your man, unless you’re being screened off of him.

northcyde,
Yeah, if this team is not getting stops and getting out on the break, they struggle more often than not.
JJ has the potential to be a lock down defender, but I wonder if on nights when he feels like he has to shoulder the offensive load, if he slackens up on defense.
Do you think it would have been worth it to go from switching everything to playing straight-up man to man, since we seemed confused, and we’re communicating on defense?

O’Brien. I don’t know. Because if we play them straight up, then whomever Bibby or Crawford is guarding, will have a field day. But that still won’t solve the problem about what happens when one of the Hawks are screened off.
The purpose of the whole switching defense concept, is to eliminate the effectiveness of the pick and roll and pick and pop offenses. But I don’t know what they were doing in this game. There wasn’t much ball pressure at all, and almost all of their double teams were weak as hell. When you add that to the brain lapses we had in that 1st quarter, it was a recipe of disaster.
Just no energy and effort out of that team. Even the Mo Evans brick lay-up. That is usually a play that Mo looks to dunk the basketball, not lay it up.
