Josh Smith: “Everybody knows there ain’t nothing to do in Milwaukee”

Nothing to do here?

Nothing to do here?

Woody figures the Hawks will encounter a “hostile environment” at Milwaukee’s Bradley Center for Game 3 oN Saturday. It might be particularly unwelcoming for Josh Smith after he pulled a Joakim Noah.

A reporter mentioned that Milwaukee is different from Miami, the Hawks’ first-round destination last year (and lemme tell you, this is another reason Hawks management was happy to draw Milwaukee instead of Miami this time).

So what will Smoove do in Brew City?

“Maybe go to Ruth’s Chris or something,” he said. (Sorry, Smoove, but the nearest locations are in Madison, Wisc. and Northbrook, Ill.)

“There’s pretty much nothing to do,” Smith said. “Miami has some really good restaurants. I never really did anything in Milwaukee. I would be happy to just find a restaurant. I’m not bashing the city but I’ve never actually did anything in Milwaukee so I really don’t know what is around there.”

By now Hawks PR Man Arthur Triche, seeing where this was headed, had creeped in to try and break up the party. But, Smoove being Smoove (”I don’t care!”) he wasn’t stopping.

Someone picked up on the Noah thread and asked Smith if he’d be taking any vacations in Milwaukee.

“Would you go there?” Smith asked. “Everybody knows there ain’t nothing to do in Milwaukee, man. Everybody knows that, (even) the people that live there.”

I’ve lived in Milwaukee (Sherman Park, then Eastside). It’s been a few years but I was never bored. But then I’m a low-key regular dude, not a millionaire celebrity athlete, so my “things to do” threshold may be somewhat lower than Smoove and Co.’s.

Josh’s tone was playful when he said these things but the folks in Milwaukee probably won’t be laughing. As I recall, they can be a bit prickly about the city’s image. Hey, it’s not easy being in Chicago’s shadow. They have Ruth’s Chris, you know.

Anyway, it will be all good for the Hawks if Smoove livens up Milwaukee the way Noah lit up Cleveland. But with a W, of course.

I was born in Milwaukee but spend my teenage years and adulthood here in the A. I still have family up there but my trips to visit are usually very short…because its Milwaukee. It’s a pretty vanilla (pun intended) town with a few nice family features (the lakefront, kids & art museums, etc) but its not even close to comparing to Atlanta.

Tell Josh to grab some frozen custard and a jumbo burger from Kopp’s.

Those are ignorant comments from Smith. I’ve had a chance to go to Milwaukee several times, and it is a suprisingly interesting and dynamic city. Great riverfront and downtown, with very cool Calatrava museum looking out over the lake. Maybe it’s not a big hip hop/ clubbing town, if that’s what he wants.

A few boos will only fire him up. No big deal.

Responding to the last blog topic, of course the Hawks shouldn’t be looking ahead, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t. I don’t think it’s realistic to expect this team to win a series against Orlando without home court advantage, but it is realistic to expect them to make it a 7 game series. The win against Orlando in March was no fluke. If they use the same defensive game plan, playing Howard straight up and not allowing the shooters to get into a rhythm, they should be able to scrape together enough offense to win the home games. If Howard somehow manages to score 30-40 points efficiently in the post and the Magic win, you tip your hat and go on to the next game.

His comments (he has the right to say what he feels – Milwaukee Fans have the right to boo the ish outta him,) add an interesting dynamic to a rather bland first round series. He knows know one on the Bucks can see him in the low post and he is a dominating across the board and filling up stat sheets so maybe he drawing attention to an otherwise low-profile series to generate a bigger buzz about himself. And on Mil roster who do they have that could shut him up honestly? We ask players to be honest and once they do some jackass with a microphone and a pencil tries to use it to make a stir. The funny part about it is this news will goto Milwaukee and never be heard again, because there is no media in Milwaukee, lol. Tim Legler may mention it once, but the next second he’ll be talking about Lebron, Dwight Howard, and Boston Diapers.

By the way, I’m loving that the Hawks aren’t getting any press from national media at the moment. I think going in as the underdogs, and getting a series to get confidence up while not overworking themselves will pay off huge in the series versus Orlando.

This posts is responding to a post Tiger Wooden made a few blogs back.

I think you misunderstood my two posts. My posts about OKC had absolutely NOTHING to do with JT0. My post that I referenced OKC dealt with what Scott Brooks was doing to get his team to excel on both the OFFENSIVE and DEFENSIVE ends of the floor. The point I was trying to make is that even with a budding superstar, he doesn’t choose to just walk the ball up the court and hand it off to Durant so he can go one on five. Brooks finds creative ways (ie. running durant off screens, etc.) to get Durant open looks.

As for the JT0 debate, just squash it. We’re clearly on two different ends of the spectrum, and it’s pretty useless to continue to argue hypotheticals. It is what it is. He’s a rookie that WILL NEED MINUTES to develop his game regardless of what any of us say. Whether you agree with the pick or not, it’s obvious he’ll need the minutes to develop. Blaming the kid for that doesn’t seem to make much sense, because ultimately the Hawks took him at #19. I’ll say it again, they wouldn’t have taken him if he wasn’t needed. There’s obviously a plan in place to get a young PG into the rotation once Bibby’s gone, and as of now, we can assume JT0 will fill that role. If you truly want the kid to succeed, you wouldn’t make baseless comments such as “he should’ve stayed in college.” But instead, you’d root for the kid to get some PT and get the opportunity to prove himself on the court.

This argument is really one that’s better suited for next season at this point. Even I’m a bit worn out with the JT0-minutes argument at this point. Playoff basketball should be about W’s, by any means necessary.

If a team is looking for bulletin board material to hype them up in the playoffs, being down 0-2, then something is wrong with that team and the coaching staff.

If Josh had come out and said “Milwaukee is his favorite city to visit”, would that have made any difference to how the Bucks play?

The bottom line is both teams have to come out and play. And whatever happens will not be because of Josh’s comments. Sure, fans will boo him, but the important thing wil be for Josh to continue to do what he has been doing.

Lakers and Cavs both lost road games last night, and I would not be surprised to see Orlando, Boston and ATL all lose game 3 on the road.

Milwaukee only has sausage, beer, and is boring? Well if we are going off stereotypes, Atlanta is racist, full of rednecks, and is a giant, sprawling ghetto. For christsakes, you even have a glorious stone monument to the generals that fought to defend your precious slavery. But, I guess that’s cool for dumb athletes like Josh Smith who probally would be bagging my groceries if he wasn’t born tall. “The Civil War? Didn’t we fight that war against Germany or some s–t over tea and Communism? I don’t know, I didn’t pay attention to history class because I can put a ball in a hole.” That is what Josh Smith knows at least.

I hate to go off like that (because I know most people in Georgia are nice people), but YOU started it. What is there to do in Atlanta that you can’t in Milwaukee anyway? You hardly are NYC or L.A, let alone the most exciting city in the South. Enjoy having a fad rap scene and NASCAR as the only things to fall back on culturally. It stings when somebody fights fire with fire, eh?

Why do these guys even care what there is to DO in Milwaukee? You’re there to win a basketball game, not party until dawn. Grow up already and do your job like a pro. I guarantee you Mike Jordan, Magic Johnson, Kareen Abdul-Jabbar and Larry Bird weren’t focused on the nightlife in whatever playoff town they were visiting. Their only focus was to beat the snot out of whoever they were playing. Just proves that Smith isn’t quite as mature or focused as he needs to be on what really matters.

sorry Sage. I tend to not make comments like this often, but it just gets tiring having players/fanbases attack and mock Milwaukee at every turn. Is it so hard for them to come back with a classy answer to a loaded question like that? They are getting paid millions of dollars to travel around. If that was me giving the answer with millions in my pocket, I would say some nice things and try to endear myself–whether it’s to people in New York, Atlanta, Milwaukee, Cedar Rapids, or some random city in the middle of Texas. Then again, I am a nice person who finds value in everything and every place. I reckon that an average NBA player is too dumb and uneducated to be wasting time in local museums when they are on the road.

Nothing personal against Atlanta, but I just thought I would exhibit that all places can be attacked using stereotypes. People down in Atlanta shouldn’t be throwing stones because the South is one of the most stereotyped places in the entire world. Nice joke at the end there! lol

Never been to Milwaukee but lived in Los Angeles for 18 years as a young man. While I was there I met three people from Wisconsin. They were all gorgeous women. I fell in love with each in turn and married one. They had all moved to L.A. because there was nothing to do in Wisconsin. Perhaps all the beautiful women from Milwaukee moved to L.A.

I don’t care about what there is to do in Milwaukee, I’m only worried about Salmon’s and Jenning’s. The HAWKS better remember what they did to the Celtics 2 years ago and come with their ‘A’ games. Sweep or no sweep I don’t want a let down. Cleveland and LA just got their wake-up calls, so the HAWKS should be for warned!!

I really expect the bench to come out and play a lot better tomorrow night. They really haven’t shown what they can do these last two games and have been completely out played by the Bucks’ bench. I think part of the reason they haven’t been playing well, is they’ve come in the game with big leads and weren’t focused. They need to change their mentality and come with intensity and execution as soon as they touch the court.

GO HAWKS!!

Plus Milwaukee just isn’t much of an NBA city anymore. But then again, it’s not like Hawks games sell out unless Lebron is in town.

Most of the Brewers (and Packers) have pretty nice things to say about Milwaukee. Josh Smith can go to Ryan Braun’s new restaurant in the Third Ward. It’s on a river. One of those nice natural features Atlanta lacks.

Was born and grew up in Milwaukee, and have also lived in Tokyo (1.5 years), Washington D.C. (4 years), Chicago (2 years), Miami (7 years) and Atlanta (6 years). Each place has its pluses and minuses – to say Milwaukee “sucks’ or there is “nothing to do” really shows a myopic focus on “fun”. I enjoyed skipping the velvet ropes at the Shore Club and Opium in the day in Miami, hitting an underground back alley bar in Ginza and eating dinner on the Potomac while President Clinton and his family sat two tables away. And yes, Atlanta has a great nightlife and dining scene. But just taking some time to sit at a bar or patio in Milwaukee, eat a brat with a $1 draft with a bunch of salt of the earth neighborhood folks and talk Packers or Bucks are pleasures in their own right (not to mention some of the absolute best German restaurants in the US). Ok, Atlanta is a great city – one of my favorites – but it says a fair amount about the character of a person when they are unable to enrich themselves by finding something interesting to do in a city. Even a city as apparently bland as Milwaukee.

It’s funny that earlier this month, in an interview with Bob Costas, no less a sports legend than Henry Aaron said that Milwaukee is still his favorite city. I suspect that years into the future, more people will know Henry Aaron’s name(and value his opinions)and Josh will just be another NBA player named Smith. I’ve lived in northern California and Wisconsin and wouldn’t live in the south for any reason but that’s nothing more than personal preference. I’ve got to be near big water and Atlanta’s got nothing like that. Since Josh Smith has never lived anywhere else but Georgia, except for the year he spent in Virginia at Oak Hill, I’d say his perspective is rather limited. But I’m glad he helps perpetuate these simplistic stereotypes of Milwaukee and Wisconsin alive because it keeps people with limited intellects like him away and that helps keep this beautiful part of the planet from getting too overpopulated.

Anyone ever think that maybe him and the other players are a little agitated about the miserable playoff scheduling? Even if it was a joke, might there be a little seriousness/anger in the fact that they’ve got to spend 5 days in Milwaukee to play 2 games? (one on ESPN, one on NBATV, not that it matters, as this will likely go down as the least watched playoff series this year). I understand they’re drawing it out for the purpose of revenue, but don’t you lose money when people/players lose interest? I fiercely followed the playoffs for a few weeks last year. By the time the conference finals ended, I was over it.

Momentum is pretty damn near impossible to maintain when playoff games are scheduled this way.

Speaking of making money. Just read an article about how the NFL draft’s ratings > NBA playoffs last night.

One great casino—-great entertainment, great food, and lots of fine looking women. Lots of nba, mlb and nfl players show up regularly there and they dont think Milw is a bad place at all.

One poster claimed Ray Allen was bored and didnt like Milw—–garbage baby. Ray was a well respected guy in the community and shared a great relationship with the area. people (young players) like to party and drugs are never more than a bartender, bouncer or parking lot away. I don’t know if any of you remember being in your early 20’s, but the Hawks players abilitity to be “ballers” in those intensely popular nightclubs makes me nervous as hell. It only takes being pulled over in your friends car with a couple xanax and having that information publicized to ruin one’s career.

The Hawks lack of focus and intensity sometimes leaves you wondering how drunk or stoned they got the night before, but I don’t think the Hawks players party as hard as some of you seem to think. If they do, they’re probably pretty careful about it, because it sure as hell is easy to get in trouble. That said, I think the core is mature and paid enough to realize they can do whatever the hell they want when their careers end, that the present is not a time to be getting crunk in between games. Ben Roethlisberger and many others have made this all too obvious.

Charles Barkley’s the one who ha the best times in Atlanta, drugs, prostitutes, but hey, his career is over so i don’t care what he does.

2) Tomorrow the Bucks play the Hawks
3) The Brewers are playing the Cubs this weekend
4) The Milwaukee Art Museum (one of the most beautiful art museums in the world) is showing one of Raphael’s masterpieces (The Woman with the Veil)
5) Steaks at Carnivor or Mo’s are as good as the best in the country. You have to go to Argentina or Japan (true Kobe beef) to find better steaks
Just a short list of what the city has to offer. I could go on, but I am hoping you get the picture.

Your comment is that what Black People can call fun—-as applicable to Milwaukee.

Sorry but as previous posts point out that Milw is 35-40% Black. Milwaukee is loaded with outstanding restaurants and many great watering holes. As I mentioned before there is a great casino downtown—-last time I was there I indeed saw many Black people enjoying themselves there.

Frankly, Ive been to Atlanta many times and aside from cnn and coca cola downtown is boring and actually a little frightening.

I grew up in Atlanta, and I still enjoy visiting family there. That being said, I’ve spent a lot of time in Milwaukee too, and it’s a great town. What I don’t understand is where all the hate for Cleveland comes from. I married a Clevelander, and I have to say, I’ve had as much fun in Cleveland as anywhere. It has Major League Sports, great culture (fantastic art museum and a world class symphony orchestra), wonderful Universities close by, a great microbrewery, and pretty darn good shopping and eating, as well as one of the greatest park systems in the country. I think a lot of people comment on things they really aren’t familiar with.

Nobody wants a war with Milwaukee…okay? I think the reason Josh’s comments are significant is that he probably won’t be out partying and living high til 3 a.m. on game night. And that’s good for the Hawks. Josh Smith, who is really a unique outstanding, great basketball player who thinks for himself and is now coming into his own, used to have a good game, then a horrible game, then a good game, back and forth back and forth. It wouldn’t be out of the ordinary to suggest maybe he celebrated somewhat. I would like to envision Josh under the covers, counting his stats to go to sleep.

I always hate these city comparisons, because every city has cool places, good areas, crappy places and bad areas. San Diego has a terrible Mexican slum. Santa Barbara has a law that allows homeless people to sleep on your lawn legally. On the other side, Cleveland has the Rock and Roll HOF, and right down the road in scenic Canton is the NFL HOF. So you take the bad with the good. I guess the only perfect town in the USA is Athens :) .

I had some good pizza in Milwaukee. And I can even remember having a good steak there, too.

I was a college student back then- and severely underaged. But I remember this bar that looked the other way when we ordered pitchers of beer in Milwaukee. And I remember some pretty girls, but they walked a little hard.

But I was living and going to school in Chicago. And I was in Milwaukee to visit friends who would always come to Chicago for fun.

Oh, and for the Atlanta Hawks to be bored in Milwaukee may actually be a good thing. Josh Smith might just stay with the team and focus on the game.

@UGA slobberknocker, you had me up to the Athens line…Go Jackets!
@Ant Banks, I actually would take Milwaukee over those two. You can throw Las Vegas and DC in that bag with Miami and LA, as towns I don’t need to spend anymore time in. Been there, done that.
There have been some interesting posts here, but the grammar has been atrocious. Some of you guys need to head back to English 101.

The real culprits who incite controversy (about players’ comments, whether it’s Noah or Josh) are not the brain-farts who react with hate language, but the writers who stir it up. Since the source of the Josh story came from Milwaukee, no doubt they are just looking for an edge to help their team. Perhaps some good old fashion team execution would be a better alternative then the PR stunts. I remember the Boston Boo Birds going against Bibby for some off-comments he made. It only motivated him as he had some of his best games against Boston. Maybe Josh will do likewise and the stunt will be back-fire.

I live in Milwaukee, and its 40% African American look it up, and most of us have relatives from down south. I’ve been to Atlanta and had a good time, so I can’t say anything bad about the city, but seriously I don’t think half of the people on this blog have ever even been out of the south. Now to get to my point, The Hawks aren’t the best road team in the league, even without Bogut, Bucks will win this next game, and maybe even the game on Monday.

Laverne & Shirley

The Bucks were in a sing-a-long earlier today and sang, “We’re gonna make it after all!”

That maybe true, but hey Bucks! You’re NOT gonna make it out of the 1st Round! LOL!

Interesting enough that the two seeded teams with less wins than Milwaukee – have found a way to steal a game from the Cavs & Magic. That bodes well for the Hawks should we sweep the Bucks. We get more tape to review & a chance to see how their new additions and returning players are playing.
It also, means that they will have expended more energy to get out of this round #1.

I for one, can’t help but wonder how wicked the nay-sayers would be if we lost to a #7 or #8 seed after being a #1 or #2? Hopefully, we will not have to see that show on here!

We probably could WIN it all and still draw the IRE of some on here! Go Figure.

Josh should have been a bit more tactful, but can’t hate on the dude for speaking his mind. Hope that does not fire up the Bucks!

About things to do in Milwaukee, all I’ve been hearing is food, beer, museum, pizza…I would think you can get all that anywhere in America??? That’s all you’all got? How about cold, miserable weather 10 months in a year?

Orlando/Charlotte. What a boringly brutal and ugly series!

Go Hawks. I’m only going to look ahead if Hawks win Game 3. Lots of the upper seeded teams are now beginning to lose that third game away. Hope Hawks are taking notes.

This is just a case of ignorance and bias that people have about cities smaller than where they are from or live. They just assume there’s nothing to do in the smaller city, without REALLY checking into it.

Unless your town is truly so small, that it has like 1 or 2 high schools, and wal-mart is basically one of the only shopping options in town..no malls…1 club (if that many)…I really dont understand how people can say its “nothing to do” in any metro area…let alone ones with millions of people like. MILWAUKEE.

I’m from Savannah and I get that attitude from ATL people all the time, yet I’ve been to clubs in Savannah, Augusta, Albany and Macon where I’ve had just as good of a time and saw just as many fine broad as I did in ATL clubs.

ATL clubs are overrated. It’s not that they suck, it’s just that for the most part they arent any better than clubs in several other cities, even including the ones in mid-sized cities within the state, let alone other metropolises with millions of people across the country.

LOL……nice game atlanta! Lose by 25 to a team without its best player. You might make it out of the 1st round but that is your ceiling. Josh smith will be finding him himself a fun exciting town very soon after the Bucks players themselves will. Atlanta has no chance after this round and lucked out with their first round draw.

I think it is admirable that a professional athlete is looking for interesting things to occupy his time between games. As a Milwaukee resident, I am happy to assist Mr. Smith in his search. Perhaps the Milwaukee Public Museum’s current exhibit on the Dead Sea Scrolls, the first time the artifacts have ever been assembled for public viewing, would be of interest to an individual of Mr. Smith’s breadth. It is just a short walk from his hotel and can satisfy his curiosity about the roots of his faith. When he completes that comtemplative journey, Mr. Smith might stroll along the river walk a few blocks east. There he could enjoy pleasant reflective moments of game 3 over a freshly-brewed cup of espresso or a cool Milwaukee micro brew. I tried to do this in Downtown Atlanta, but try as I might, I couldn’t find the Atlanta Riverwalk, nor even a river. Should I happen to meet Mr. Smith in Milwaukee, I’d love to take him for a ride on my boat. He will find me at my home on the river, just two blocks from his hotel. We can cruise down to any of about twenty restaurants of all types and prices, and patrons of varying interests and ages. But, should his appetite have been befouled by his unhappy performance in Game 3, we can always forgo food, and cruise out onto Lake Michigan. If he has the time, we could cruise down to Chicago or up and over to Detrot or Cleveland, if he hungers for the urban excitement that we in Milwaukee refer to as “the Ray Lewis Buckhead Experience.” We let that kind of things-to-do-for-professional-athletes activities to great places like Atlanta. In fact, Milwaukeans have always given Atlanta things that we don’t wish to have: the Milwaukee Hawks and the Milwaukee Braves, just to name two pieces of history. (Eddie Mathews and Henry Aaron did their best work in Milwaukee. Two pretty good professional athletes that lived here happily, as well.) By the way, Mr. Smith, if I have interested you to seek more sports history about your team’s roots, or about other noteable athletic events, within a block of the Bradley Center, you might stop by the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame. It’s always open. You will be walking right past it on the short walk back to the hotel following your Game 4 loss. Reading the plaques may be a small distraction to tonight’s outcome. To win this series, you will have to do it on your home court. For you, Milwaukee will be far worse than boring.

It's what u make it...
