Bucks at Atlanta Hawks: Game 1
Finally, it’s time. Now that I’ve partially recovered from the emotional trauma of stupidly getting my Blackberry wet yesterday and quietly weeping as I drifted into a fitful sleep . . . I’m ready. (Advice: Backup your smartphone data. Now.)
Got on The Google to find as much Hawks stuff as I could:
ESPN.com’s John Hollinger is picking the Hawks in 5, based in part on this research:
It turns out that in the first round, when the home-court team has won the regular-season series, it also has won the playoff series 41 straight times.
I repeat: 41 straight. Forty-one and oh.
The last team to defy the rule was the 1997-98 San Antonio Spurs, who lost the season series to Phoenix 3-1 but topped the Suns in a 4 versus 5 series in the playoffs; each team had won 56 games that season. It happened three other times in the 1990s, so the odds are slightly better than the daunting 41-0 figure indicates, but in the big picture we’re looking at a success rate of about 5 percent.
Brett LaGree at Hoppinion says Hawks in 5 while admitting that’s a hedge. Before that, he offered his take on what the numbers say about the series considering the Bucks added Salmons and lost Bogut:
It’s a good thing the Hawks play a certain style of basketball regardless of the opposition. There’s simply not much tape on the short-handed Bucks to watch in order to formulate a game plan specific to their current makeup.
One possible downside of the Hawks playing a certain style of basketball regardless of the opposition is the specter of Scott Skiles figuring out a way to stifle Atlanta’s isolation offense. The Bucks haven’t stopped Joe Johnson yet this season (27.3 PPG, 56.1 TS% in the three games) but they are unlikely to see him used in a wide variety of sets. Only Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James had more plays run for them in isolation than Johnson and of the top five players in the league is isolation plays, Johnson was fifth at creating points off of isolations.
My man Charlie G at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel breaks down the series and picks the Hawks in six:
The Hawks are riding a wave of confidence into the playoffs and believe they can handle the Bucks and challenge Orlando in a possible conference semifinal matchup. The loss of Bogut to a season-ending injury on April 3 was a severe blow to the Bucks, who have relied on his leadership all season and will miss his defensive presence, low-post scoring and shot-blocking ability. The Bucks will need a sensational playoff performance from three or four players to have a chance to stay with the extremely well-balanced Hawks lineup.
At Peachtree Hoops, THHB and Drew conclude a conversation about the series with Drew picking the Hawks in five and THHB calling it Hawks in six. Says THHB:
While I truly believe the Hawks, especially playing the Bucks without Bogut, can take the series in four games given their talent advantage– their history of not remaining focused from game to game may cause the series to extend out beyond a sweep. Considering that, plus that the Bucks under Scott Skiles always bring the effort and energy, and the likelihood of the Hawks taking care of business in Games 1 and 2 at home might allow the guard to be let down and MIL to take advantage a couple of times.
ATL_Hawk_Luv at Hawk Str8Talk skips the analysis to predict the Hawks in 5 and lists the reasons it’s important they “dispatch with an inferior team.” One of them:
Are the Hawks mentally tough? No one talks about this, but it matters to this blogger greatly that in 2 years – we haven’t lost a game by less than 10 points. It mattered vs. the vastly superior Celtics in ‘08, but it mattered even more that we couldn’t keep a game close on the road and at home vs. the inferior Heat.
Soaring Down South’s Kris Willis leaves open the possibility of the Bucks “landing a haymaker and stealing” one of the first two games but predicts Hawks in five:
While some pundits out there think that the Bucks are capable of pulling the upset even without Andrew Bogut I ultimately think that this was the best match up for the Hawks in the first round. With me it is not about disrespect to the Bucks because I will admit that I laughed at the thought that John Salmons was going to help this Bucks team in any way when that trade was made. The fact is that trade did work and with a healthy Bogut then this is a scary team. They simply however don’t match up well with the Hawks.
Hawks blog legend Sekou says Hawks in six:
The Bucks have to play above and beyond their means to beat the Hawks four times without Bogut. They’ll be well prepared, no Skiles-coached team shows up any other way, but the Hawks are deeper, healthier and better.
As for me, I’m calling it Hawks in five but I admit to basing that largely on the game at Milwaukee on Monday. The Bucks gave the Hawks what might be their best shot and the Hawks countered it even without Jamal. I’m counting on the Hawks maintaining that level of play forward and winning Game 3 or 4 in Brewtown and not losing at Philips. I say this even though I realize the Hawks are quite capable of making me look silly for it but there it is anyway.

If what they said is true, I did not realize that JJ was top 3 in isolation plays run for him.
As for the series, I think Hawks in 6 ( Bucks win game 3 and 4 at their house, but then Hawks close them out).
What I would like to see is the Hawks play the way they are capable of playing. Too often we play down to the competition.
In the Bulls-Cavs game, the Bulls look the way we did when we played the Celtics 2 postseasons ago.

Hawks in 5. I’m hoping for Hawks in 4 — a 5 game series means an extra $30 out of my pocket — but even if the Hawks’ season-long struggles with closing out games and zone defenses pop up again, this series shouldn’t go longer than 5.

GREAT Half by the HAWKS!! They definitely took advantage of match-ups inside. Good coaching by Woody, in terms of keeping defenders on the court. Even though Jennings has 20 points, we’re still not letting anyone else go off! We definitely need to keep up the defense in the 2nd and like you said O’Brien rest the starters in the 4th.

Well . . . we see what the problem is going to be this series. No one can guard Jennings. Not JJ, nor Bibby, nor Teague, nor Crawford . . Horford ( because of his size ) will at least force him to shoot a fadeaway or try to beat him off the dribble.
LOL . . 12 point game. Let’s see if this team can turn back up the energy.
I remember the game in which Michael Jordan scored 63 on Boston, but they still lost. This game kind of reminds me of that. Hopefully we can hold Jennings to under 50 . . lol.

Jennings has expended a HUGE amount of energy so why not when Crawford comes in you isolate him and use screens and just wear his lil @zz out ? Hes the only thing keeping this game close and we are not even going to attack him .
Id tell Crawford when hes on you I better not see a jumpshot from you take him to the rack and that will disrupt his offensive flow The last thing we want to do is allow him to rest .

Defense on Jennings has to change. Looks like you we’re going to have to force him to drive and dish. On the offensive side we’ve got to get the ball into Smoove earlier in the shot clock. But the main reason the lead is down to 12 is the lack of energy on the defensive side.

Jennings is pretty talented, but I think the Hawks are okay with him getting his, if he can’t get his teammates involved. He can’t beat us by himself.
Especially if our starting lineup keeps scoring the way they are. Everybody but JJ is shooting north of 50%. He looks a bit tired.

Joe can contain Jennings just fine, as we’ve seen already, but it shouldn’t be a necessity. He and the others are already keeping Salmons locked up, which helps.
I would not like to see this series with a healthy Andrew Bogut. It would definitely be more difficult. Having said that, I still think we could win it in 6 games.

Scoring drought again, and it has all of the same symptoms of the regular season: Joe and Jamal taking all of the shots, and missing most of the ones they are taking.
How aggravating is that? Still have a lead we can build on, though. Will the frontcourt continue to get ignored? Will we continue to shoot from the outside instead of sharing the ball and finding ways to cut through the defense (even if it’s a zone)?

That last 3-4 minutes debacle was on Josh smith . He was tired and Woody shouldve have taken him out much sooner as he was out of position offensively and just freelancing defensively . He can do that with the starters but when hes in with the bench he has to show more leadership.

I agree that Josh has to make his free throws. I agree that taking the ball up the court (instead of one of the guards) is risky (though it has resulted in both baskets and assists more often that you might want to admit to).
However….the day a couple of missed free throws and ZERO turnovers is worse than two guys taking all the shots and barely hitting a third of them (10 for 27)….how about some perspective…

LOL . . the Crawford dimension. An absolute HORRIBLE shot, but he drains the 3.
This game is still all about defense though. Hawks dodged some bullets on that last possession that could’ve cut it to 5.
Milwaukee has outscored us 44 – 30 in the 2nd half so far. Even if they end up losing by around 8 – 12 points, they can build on their 2nd half effort for Game 2.

In regard to Horford, I knew precisely what you meant. He has not developed that move yet, but I have faith he’ll work on it this summer. I don’t know if he’ll do it in this postseason, though. Now is not the time to work on that.
This is what happens when a guy has limited moves, and isn’t counted on to score all that much. I’m sure he’ll have it down pat for next year. As stated before, that doesn’t help us right now .
What’s bad is that teams have know about this for some time. I remember Hubie Brown talking about it a lot earlier in the season.

It was the defense in general and the bad turnovers.

A win is a win is a win. The first quarter and half count just as much as the third quarter and second half. The Bucks didn’t play well enough, long enough to win this game.
The Hawks lost intensity at both ends of the floor after building a huge lead. I don’t think anyone should act as if that is a rare thing in the NBA. That said, I don’t see any red flags that would indicate that the Bucks can win this series.

Yeah, Cavs were up big vs Bulls and Bulls cut the lead down, just like tonight. I hope the team and Woody learn from this ballgame. You can’t get complacent and go away from what is working.
Folks saying Bucks are going to get confidence from this game. I don’t see it. I think Hawks are going to get a nasty jolt saying you can’t take this team for granted. This was a hard fought win.
Jamal played badly, in my opinion, even though he scored 17. He was tentative, turned the ball over when he should have shot it. I think it was just playoff jitters. Now he can relax and realize that it’s just another ball game, something I’m great at playing. He played great defence, though.

Another guy who migh be available this offseason is Udonis Haslem. I would love to see him as a Hawk next year.

The problem arises when ESPN[gang] fails to acknowledge the same with LbJ, i e – Stern’s: “Chosen One”.

Jamal is who he is . . a streak shooter who can put up points in bunches. I don’t expect consistent offense out of him, like I do JJ. If Jamal keeps having at least a monster quarter that sparks a run, then I won’t be too unhappy with him. Not a good game by any means, but did go 3- 5 from three. So I’ll take what I can get from Jamal. I just don’t want him to continue to sell us out, like Flip did in the playoffs last year.
21 shots for JJ. Made 10. At least he’s staying aggressive.

Will we have to listen to Jon Barry hating a$$ everytime we are on ESPN?! GIVE ME Mark Jackson. Man Jon hates on us so much, even when we were up by 24.
I would love to see us put 4 good quarters together. This ish is getting old. Glad for the win but this aint gon fly in the second round..if we make there.

Skiles is a good coach. But like most coaches, he has good points and bad points. Skiles has his limits as well. Can he get a team to the playoffs three years in a row? Hasn’t done it yet, but Woody is on his third year. Of course, having a lot of the same guys (the important ones) and not getting fired helps. Anyway, Skiles ain’t perfect, and he wore things out in Chicago. I do think they were idiots for letting him go, is Del Negro better? Hah…
As for not sitting Jennings….
I recall plenty of people making lots of noise about playing JJ half to death last year. The oh-so-quick retort from Woody’s best friends on this blog was that he didn’t have anything else reliable or productive on this roster.
So…what did Skiles have?
Woody had this team prepared. They did what they usually do in the second half, unfortunately. But, their superior talent, experience, and defense won the day. And they won by double digits.
Skiles had a less talented team prepared to give us a fight.
I’ve seen better coaches make more critical mistakes, so I can’t get too down on Skiles, and really…I don’t care, because he’s not OUR coach, so who gives a rip?
Much worse mistake: you’re in the conference finals and then the NBA Finals, but you sit the pg who got you there, and play the guy coming back off of injury.

Im a little disappointed. However O.K. win hawks could have done better in the 2nd half! Cmon hawks show no mercy game 2! Don’t take ANYTHING for granted!

I am not trying to take the side of ESPN but it is true that we throw away games. We are not going to get respect as a team until we make it to the ECF. So I say take this BS and turn it into a positive. I think that this was a good thing because we blew out the Heat last year by 26 points and got blown out the next home game because of arrogance. This game helps us come into the second game and destroy them. At least I do not have to listen to John Berry’s BS commentary next game.
