Cavaliers at Atlanta Hawks: Sitting On It (UPDATE: Marvin to play, other starters to sit)

Cavs coach Mike Brown said today at shooataround that LeBron and Shaq
won’t play tonight. Woody said he hadn’t made up his mind: “Game-time decision.” But chances are Hawks starters won’t play or get only token minutes considering the Hawks can’t improve their playoff seeding and that’s the way Woody approached last season’s finale under similar circumstances.

(EDIT: In pregame, Woody said Marvin would start alongside Teague, Joe Smith, and Zaza.)

The consensus among Hawks players is they’re fine with sitting.

“If anything, it helps after such a long season, Al said.

These two will watch the game tonight. (AP Photo/Mark Duncan)

These two will watch the game tonight. (AP Photo/Mark Duncan)

For Brown, the main motivation behind sitting LeBron and Shaq is to avoid injury. “That had a lot to do with it,” he said.

This will be the fourth healthy scratch in a row for LeBron. Shaq just recently was cleared to return after missing six weeks with a thumb injury.

The Cavs will enter the playoffs with their full lineup of LeBron, Shaq, Mo Williams, Antawn Jamison and Anthony Parker having played together for just three full games. Brown wasn’t ready to say that’s not a worry because his team is so veteran.

“You worry,” Brown said. “As a coach you worry about a lot of things. You hope your worries don’t come true.”

After the shootaround, LeBron joked about whether his Atlanta fans want to see him play. Yeah, they do, and by the way does he feel for fans who bought tickets to games to see him as the main attraction? He shook his head: “I’ve played in every arena this year.”

That’s true, though I doubt it’s much solace for his fans who picked the wrong game to buy tickets. Some advice for those fans: If you want to see a star player on a good team, and his final visit is scheduled within the last week or so, best to catch him the first time he comes to town.

– There’s a feeling among the Hawks that the Heat might not go all out to beat the Nets tonight because Miami would rather face the Hawks than the Celtics. That’s not hard to believe. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra says manipulating the seeding would be “messing with the basketball gods” but, depending on how many lines you want to read between, the Hawks’ suspicions can be confirmed by looking at this Miami Herald story by Izzy:

Jermaine O’Neal, who missed one game and started only five against the Hawks (in the playoffs) last year because of a concussion, said the difference between the Hawks and Celtics is predictability.

“[The Hawks] can put you in a tough situation, especially in Atlanta,” O’Neal said. “They play at another level. But you never really know what to expect with those guys. But with Boston, you know it’s going to be very physical, it’s going to be a grind-out type of a game, every-possession-counts type of a game. So it’s kind of like, pick your poison, really.”

Of course, even if the Heat tanked it would need the Bucks to beat Boston tonight to “secure” the No. 6 seed. That should happen since the Celtics are likely to rest their starters, too, but you never know. Maybe the Bucks want the Hawks, too.

can’t believe more people don’t call out Bibby for being overweight.

The guy does NOT use his size to his advantage at all on the court.

1) He cannot post up players a la Baron Davis. B.Diddy uses his SIZE to post up SMALLER players. Bibby doesn’t do this
2) Because he is so big, he is too slow and immobile to GUARD other players. Seriously, someone faces him up, takes one dribble, and Bibby looks like the damn Statue of Liberty after the player has taken one dribble –> !@#$ing joke

So can someone tell me why Bibby feels the need to be so big??

It’s sad when you’re a top team’ but teams don’t respect you as a top team.

What O’neal was really saying is, Boston plays hard every night, even with all the injuries and aging.

The Hawks on the other hand can be beat, because 1 game they play perfect and inspired ball.

The next game they play like an expansion team.

You never know what you will get from those guys.

With that said we think we can beat them.

My message to Miami if they decide to manipulate the outcome of that game: Be careful what you wish for; THE STUNT COULD BACKFIRE The Hawk players would consider that a total disrespect of their accomplishment. They could use the action to feed their motivation especially since that series starts in the ATL.

Of course we would rather see the Bogut-less Bucks instead of the Heat, simply because Dwayne Wade has the ability to take over a game, and we all saw him single-handedly win a the NBA Finals a few years ago. Regardless, I still think we would dominate the Heat in a 7 game series, and I don’t think it would go down to game 7 this year. But really it all comes down to whether we can beat the Magic and Cavs in a 7 game series, which would take a miracle considering we don’t have a true 7ft Center to battle against D Howard and Shaq/Z. I think it all really comes down to Marvin and our bench. If Marvin shows up and Crawford shows out (dropping 50), and Mo/Teague/ZaZa play like they have been lately, I think we have a legitimate chance. Use Mario West as a perimeter Defensive specialist. Use Jason Collins to bang with Shaq/Z and Howard. Get Joe Smith involved. The Hawks can do this

The Hawks would play hard for 2 quarters then let the Heat come back, and then grind it out. The Hawks don’t dominate teams anymore. Every game we play we are winning, let the other team back, and the game comes down to the last 3 possessions

I do not think Miami will tank tonight just to face the Hawks. Really, it doesn’t matter. Heat are not good enough to beat either the Celtics or Hawks.

Did anyone else hear Barkley ripping on the C’s last night? He said the only way they could win a series would be to play a team in the East NOT in the playoffs. Don’t know if I agree, but love to see the Celtics get cut on.

I’m sure the financial arm of the Atlanta Spirit is real happy with this scheduling. Cavs come to town and you have no chance to fill the arena. How lucky

If Miami does roll over tonight, that might be good for ticket sales in the first round. How many folks would come to see Wade in the playoffs? Now ask that same question about John Salmons? It’s not disrespect, it’s lack of a marquee name to sell tickets.

It comes down to the fact that Billy Knight was RIGHT in bringing Joe Johnson in here and he was right in trying to get rid of Mike Woodson. Now, I will agree Marvin has hurt us because Chris Paul would make this team incredible! ( Big whoops on Knight’s part) If we are lucky enough to make it to the 2nd round, the Magic will show us the door in 4! Why? Because Mike Woodson has no idea how to make adjustments. Say bye bye to Joe as well because he is no fool and wants to win a Championship and knows that will not happen with Woody at the helm.

wow. there are a lot of haters here. The Hawks are a very good team that doesnt always show up to play. They will definitely step their game up whether they play the Heat or Bucks. They will get out of the 1st round in 5. They are perfectly capable of beating the Magic or Cavs in the 2nd round. They have been winning all the games against both teams & had some cold spots in the games, particularly towards the end of the 4th that lost them the game. It will be a different story in the playoffs. Marvin will also step up to do more on the offensive end. The Hawks will make it to the Conference Finals against the Magic. Quote me

all of you bibby bashers need to give it up. he’s the only guy we have that keeps this bunch together. his play has improved considerably over the past month too. please be careful what you wish for–look at the games he’s been out–we look clueless. yes we could start teague but he’s not yet ready, we could start joe and jamal together that might work, joe and mo and a few other combos but at the end of the day–this team won 52 games–truthfully should have won 60. we have a really good team the way it is…it’s playoff time now–whoever gets hot can and will win the east.

true the favorites have to be the cavs and the magic–but if the hawks crank it up a notch or two we can win the eastern conference. we have the talent!!!!

as far as tonight goes–bucks or heat–obviously i would rather face the bucks. but sometimes we do play down to our competition so whoever we end up with let’s take care of the business at hand and worry about round 2’s opponent when we get there. go hawks it’s put up or shut now boys….everybody’s 0-0.

It’s amazing how perspectives can vary. I was just reading the Buck’s blog, and it says that they want no part of the Hawks in the playoffs (especially without Bogut) because of their overall length (”they’re like an AAU team”), their switching defense, their ability of their bigs to cover a guard when they do switch, Smoove’s ability to recover and block shots when you finally beat a switch, can’t stop Joe, the Hawks are harder to hate because they’re not very “villainy”, etc. Meanwhile, the Heat are supposed to prefer the Hawks.

O'Brien

April 14th, 2010
4:22 pm

If you’re Miami, why would you want Boston.

Miami went 0-3 against Boston (although all 3 games were close), and 3-1 against the Hawks. Plus they took the Hawks to game 7 last year. I think Miami would prefer ATL.

Manny T mentioned this on another blog. Who would the ASG like to see the Hawks play? Bucks or Heat? Heat and DWade bring extra revenue, more fans, prime time games etc, which is good for marketing.

From espn.com,

“Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers is leaning toward leaving the team after this season, sources told the Boston Herald, but he told the newspaper Tuesday that no final decision had been made about his future”.

For the record, if he does leave, he says it would be to spend more time with his family.

O'Brien

April 14th, 2010
4:27 pm

More reasons why Miami might prefer Hawks instead of Celtics.

1) Less travel time. From Miami to Atl is not a long trip.

2) Wade has more fans in ATL than he does in Boston.

3) Wade will get all the calls in ATL, while he would have to share the calls in Boston (KG and Pierce will get some).

O'Brien

Also, if Miami finishes 6th, then they will avoid Cleveland in the second round. And nobody (except maybe Boston) wants to play Cleveland in the second round.

So I have been reading all the posts and I am disgusted… Seriously guys? Hawks will destroy the Heat or Bucks easily. You really think that the Heat have a chance? That is amusing. They pretty much have the same caliber as last year. We have Jamal Crawford and a more improved/consistent group. If we play with heart and come out with something to prove, we will demolish the Heat in 5 games. Yes the heat are 3-1… But the regular season means nothing. Mark my words on that.

You do not think Jamal Crawford is not going to come out with a huge playoffs? First time ever going? We are going to surprise everyone this year. Yes, we have flaws. All teams have flaws. But we are young, athletic, and best of all…. the underdog. Most people think we will not make it out the second round, and some people say not even the first round if we get the Heat.

I really think most fans are truly ungrateful for the achievements this team has made. Al and Josh have grown greatly. Joe Johnson is phenomenal and I hope he stays. Bibby and Marvin have done sub par this year but I believe they will kick it up in the playoffs. JC is a great add on. The bench has been stepping up. If we stay healthy, we will give a good fight in the second round and potentially the eastern finals. I am not even worried about the first round. This team is very underrated and I like it. You will see in the playoffs. They will make a run for the eastern title.

If we’re going to make a big issue of if we’d rather play the Bucks or Heat in the 1st rd, it really doesn’t matter whether we win or not does it, since we’ll likely have to play the Cavs or Magic in the 2nd rd. Think about it, if we’re afraid of teams we might play in the 1st rd, we would be terrified of any team we’d have to play in the 2nd rd, since 2nd rd opponents are almost always better than 1st rd opponents.

We should be completely confident in our ability to dispatch any 1st rd opponent we face. Realistically, we should have the same attitude about any 2nd rd opponent, including Cleveland and Orlando. The only difference should be the number of gms it will take to get the job done.

Basically, HC Mike Woodson is the key to how far we go in the playoffs. If he dispenses with his personal bias’ toward certain players and plays his players sensibly, utilizes his bench effectively and counters moves made by his opponent, before halftime, we can beat anyone in this yrs playoffs, period.

Truth-serum (Granbad) is lying yet AGAIN. In the very chart that he posts, he says that Horfords rebounds are down when the post CLEARLY shows his rebounds UP from last year (9.3 to 9.9).

Truth-serum ALSO said early in the year (or maybe it was before the season stated) that he’d be FINE with Horford producing 15 and 10, though he doubted Al could do it. Well, here are his season numbers and he’s VERY CLOSE to 15 and 10 (14.2 and 9.9), and yet here is Truth-serum doing all he can to discredit an All-Star player. Maybe he forgot that he said it.

Truth-serum will apparently go to ANY lengths of lying to discredit our All-Star Center.

Best Hawks team ever. Best Hawks season that I remember. Bigdave was right. We’ve had our highs and some awful lows. We lost games we had no business losing. We won games everybody thought we would lose. We had thrillers, buzzer beaters, mean, nasty dunks, sweet passes, blockfests, swarming defence, and a bad ass 6th man of the year. Regular season I know was frustrating for us fans sometimes, but it’s been a thrilling one. And here are some of Hawks accomplishments this season:

50+ wins. What else can I say?

Hawks got a lot of monkeys off their back this year. Snapped the losing streak in Utah. Finally got some justice when they made the dreaded Texas Triangle trip. Hawks swept Utah, swept Celtics, swept Portland, swept Houston, swept Memphis, along with bottom feeders like Wizards.

Hawks split with West powerhouses LA, Denver, Phoenix, Dallas and Spurs. In fact, the only team Hawks have not beaten at least once this season is Cleveland. I hope they get that done tonight.

So I simply laugh when I read these negative posts. Wish you guys were around when Hawks were winning 13 games. Wonder what you would have said then.

Truth is Hawks are still jelling, still getting better. Hell, they won the 3rd seed without getting virtually anything from Marvin, and even Bibby to some extent. Imagine if those two bring their A game in the playoffs.

Don’t know about you folks, but I have had a blast of a season, and I’m riding this train to the very end!

Go,Hawks!

Blog from before Chicago-Bulls game (yes, I’m taking credit for once)

“It looks like Chicago needs this game against the Celtics tonight. The Raptors have better division wins…if I’ve figured this out,tie goes to the Raptors.

I think Chicago may put up a really good game tonight. I think they’ll win.

Have the Champagne ready…..or at least the popcorn. ”

I should have said peanuts…other than that, 100% correct.

Now, what’s happening tonight?

Listening to a Cleveland station online, most of the fans were complaining about Mike Brown being the team’s only weakness.

They said he is stubborn and slow to adjust. And he does not take advantage of matchups. i felt like they were talking about Woody lol. The only difference, was Brown (a defensive HC) has always gotten his team to play defense.

Anyways, all that doesn’t matter now. Lets play the game, and let the chips fall where they may

A lot of milestones reached, streaks broken, and great moments this year:

- won @ Utah for the first time since Tupac was alive

- went 4 – 2 vs the Texas teams . . first winning record over them in ages

- mopped the floor with a good Celtics team

- turned the BIG 3 into the BIG 4

- went 21 – 9 vs the Western Conference

- beat every playoff team at least once, with the execption of Oklahoma City and Cleveland ( which may change tonight )

- winning record vs .500+ teams

- 4 buzzer beater wins

Just a lot of memorable moments about this season so far.

The bar in the NBA as per how many wins you need to get to the playoffs has been increasing every year. 2 years ago, Hawks squeaked into the 8th spot with a 37 win season. Last year they secured the 4th spot by winning 47. Now in the East, you need at least 41 wins to make the 8th seed in the East, and in the West, you must win like 50 ballgames to even make the 8th spot. Crazy, huh?

Just shows the NBA is getting better. Lots of new, young and good blood coming into the league. The OKC team is a perfect example. Young guns making big noise.

The strange thing about Teague is that both my impression and the impression of most scouting reports was that he was a much better scorer than point guard coming into the league. This year he has proven the opposite — his scoring, both when it comes to outside shooting and finishing at the rim, needs a lot of work, while his ability to play point guard, particularly in transition, is pretty good for a rookie.

Right you are. Funny, Mike Woodson was quoted saying something similar to that a couple of nights ago. Something to the affect that the bulk of Teague’s mistakes had to do with other guys not being ready for his passes. Joe and Zaza have been guilty of it. One thing is for certain though. When Teague is in the game with them and Jamal or JJ isn’t dominating the ball, they get fed.

Nunna Yo Biznezz ,

I agree with that, but I’m not stressin’ it anymore. Next year is his time. He needs to work on any shot he takes from the floor and keep going to the basket. Dude could run a pick and roll, I’m quite certain. And he’s quick enough to get to the basket just about when he wants to.

Big Ray, ZaZa for some reason tonight is actually converting on Teagues passes while Joe Smith continues to clank those jumpers he hasn’t hit all season. But we both agree, the rook gets the ball to this teammates. He had a beautiful pass in the open court to Mo tonight.

Teague this summer lock yourself in a gym and work on that jumper and that floater. If he improves both the kid will be a problem.

I have every reason to believe that he will come back next season shooting much better. In the meantime, he does get his teammates involved and has been learning to play more disciplined defense, instead of relying on his quickness/athleticism.

What’s all this talk about wanting to play the Heat beacause of ticket sales? Bottom line is D Wade can take over a game at anytime and you wouldn’t want to chance it, especially when they have won 3 out of 4 this year and took you to 7 games in the postseason last year. I would rather play the Bucks and have a possible sweep maybe the Bucks take one if they’re lucky. Let the Celtics deal with Wade. And if the Heat tank tonight against the Nets, that’ll give Atlanta more motivation to beat them anyway. I’m just saying, the Hawks have a better matchup against the Bogut-less Bucks. Get your sweep and rest up for the second round.

As Rick Flair would say, “In order to be the man, you have to beat the man!”, or “In order to be the best, you have to beat the best”. If the Hawks want to be be at the top, they should take on all comers…no need to try and look for matchups.

They should have won 60 games this season anyway. They gave away games to Chicago, Orlando, Dallas, Golden State, NY Knicks, Detroit, & Toronto. There were others that should have been won, but you have to figure, you’re going to lose one of two of the winnable games.

O'Brien

So Teague plays 27 minutes, and seems to be improving. Imagine that.

Even Woody said Teague wont have to worry about playing his game or making mistakes. And that goes a long way for a young rookie PG.

But people wil say that if Teague played like that all year, he would have gotten more minutes. And not accept the possibility that its hard to play that way when you only receive 9 mpg, and its a very inconsistent 9 mpg, and when you make a mistake, you get pulled.

In related news, Mario West has a +20 rating for tonight. WOW

Maybe the Cavs bench shut it down because they know it doesnt matter, while our bench know that they dont get much PT, so they have to make the most of it.

Either way, our bench does not look that bad.

The most important thing to me, is Teague’s potential should be obvious. He needs to work on his shots, and with consistent PT, he will force Woody to play him more.

I realize both teams are using mostly backup players, but you see the production you can get from Teague when he (1)gets a chance to play extended mins, (2) knows he doesn’t have to look over his shoulder everytime he makes a mistake and (3) gains confidence. If only Woodson could have put his ignorant bias against young PG’s in his back pocket and given Teague the mins, opportunities and room to make mistakes and grow.

This is what I mean when I say some of Woodson’s coaching philosophies and ideas have held this team back, as well as some of its players.

Could it be that maybe a rookie pg is this aggressive in a game that does not feature the team’s top 3 scorers in it?

I wonder how much Woody would appreciate Teague taking more shots (whether he was hitting them or not) if Joe, Jamal, and/or Josh were in the game? I mean, for a while there even Bibby wasn’t taking many shots before Woody smacked him in the butt and told him to start shooting again, rather than let Joe and Jamal do it all.

People can call this a scrub game as much as they like but Jamison played and he is a starter, Parker is a starter, Hickson is a starter, Delonte plays big minutes for them, Jawad Williams was in the rotation and etc. Cleveland has played most of their main guys while the Hawks haven’t.

@Truth with Crawford based on how our starters played this year we are not getting 4th but are fighting with Charlotte and the Bucks duking it out in the 5th 6th 7th range. Our starting 5 has regressed as a unit the addition of Crawford has actually hidden that as people automatically place him as a 6th starter .

Hey Melvin,

where you from?

Big Ray

April 14th, 2010

Truth Serum ,

Well, we shall see what happens. Yeah, we could have gone a different way with Flip vs. Crawford. I think the deal was there though, so Sund took it. Seriously, offloading Acie and Speedy for a guy who gets you 18ppg off the bench? Hard to beat.

I wanted us to sign Rasheed Wallace early on. Now I’m glad Sund didn’t do it. Dude is 6′11″ and can defend like crazy, but he refuses to do it. Instead of protecting the rim and dunking, he hangs around and shoots 3s.

I think Horford has some appreciative fans like myself and Sautee. The guy came into the league and gets asked to play a different position. He’s actually not a weak defender at all, we disagree there. There is a reason why he doesn’t always protect the rim. It’s called a switching defense. If you put Dwight Howard in the switch defense, which requires that a guy move around and often end up playing against quicker guards and what not, there’s no way he would be able to block as many shots.

In fact, Josh Smith should be blocking 3 shots per game, but he can’t because he has to switch off, too. Josh blocks as many as he does because he will leave the man he is supposed to be guarding and go after somebody else’s shot. At the same time, he lets guys like Troy Murphy, Rashard Lewis, and Michael Beasley shoot jumpers over him all day long. Which hurts worse?

I’m not making excuses, that’s the way Woody has those guys playing defense, and he said out of his own mouth that he does this to protect or hide guys like Bibby and Jamal, who don’t “D” up their man so well. Leave Horford in the paint and he might actually block 2 shots per game and lay some hard fouls. But we can’t do that. Even Detroit didn’t do that, and that’s where the switching defense came from. The difference was, Detroit had 5 guys in the starting lineup who could all guard their own positions, so switching wasn’t a problem. ‘Sheed had Big Ben’s back and Josh has Al’s back.

I know we disagree on Horford’s ability to defend, but I see that he doesn’t defend his position or the rim every night. He has to defend wherever the switch defense takes him. Ask guys around the league if he’s easy to score on. The Celtics absolutely hate him.

I wish we had a prototypical, franchise center, but we don’t. And I don’t know how we’re going to get one without gutting half the roster (and that’s still if a team will go for such a trade).

New Jersey has a franchise cornerstone center in Brook Lopez and a near all-star level point guard in Devin Harris, two of the biggest pieces of the puzzle. It was good for how many wins this year? See what I’m saying…there’s just more to it.

But I’ll say this: Woody’s switch defense was part of a team that has won 52 games (soon to be 53). And Horford’s defense is part of that same team. Can’t have one without the other, can’t have it both ways.

Which is the same thing with Josh. He takes too many shots that are out of his range.

Ree Roe,

Thanks for stopping by and speaking up.

Teague’s performance does not mean he should be a starter. it just means that he has potential, and brings something different to the table that Bibby does not. Speed, defense, and the ability to get guys easy shots.

And it also suggests that he deserves more consistent PT, which will give him the chance to improve. owever, it also reinforces that he needs to work on his jumper.

It’s a commonly known fact that benches play better at home than on the road across the board in the NBA, so I don’t put too much stock in individual performances in this game. That said, 25-15-5 is a great line against any NBA opponent. Teague proved that he can play well if he is given quality minutes. I’m not tryin to come at anybody here right now, but it took you guys this long to notice what the kid can do? Just forget about the points and assists and even the turnovers right now. Throw all the stats out of the window.

From a PURE PG PERSPECTIVE, JT0 offers us more today and has offered us more ALL SEASON then Mike Bibby. Bibby’s a seasoned-vet who is no doubt smarter than the rook at this point, but the quickness and ability to penetrate/set up others that JT0 brings to the table instantly makes him a more viable option to run POINT! NOT BRING THE BALL UP AND HAND IT OFF TO JJ/JAMAL.

I know it’s foolish to take this one performance and use it to justify a need for more minutes. But, you’d also be foolish to ignore the kid’s potential. All of the BS arguments that some try to sway others with on this blog (”JT0 would get more PT if he was any good) are proving to be more ignorant with every extra minute JT0 clocks. It’s not the kid’s talent that’s holding him back at this point…

Ree Roe,

I think this was his first start at home. And we know that bench players play better at home.

However, if you had a chance to watch the game, you would see that he was aggressive on offense and defense. And he was a one man fast break. He got guys easy shots (should have probably had 20 assists tonight).

I think the main issue is when he is on the court, he defers to the other guys (which is understandable). How aggressive can he be when Jamal is on the court? And we know the offense is designed for JJ and Crawford to be the main ball handler.

But he showed lots of potential, and I think consistent PT will help him improve faster.

Ree Roe ,

What is your definition of significant minutes?

Wabe ,

Some of us have seen the potential the kid has, including Mike Woodson and the entire Hawks organization. What I don’t understand is how in one breath a person can say they see the potential, but then also say he shouldn’t play anymore than he does. How exactly does the potential get brought to bear, then?

What I can’t understand is that people just don’t believe that Woody never intended to play the rook anymore than he did because he didn’t want to do it in a pivotal year like this one, sacrificing team goals for the development of one player. I still thought the kid should have played more minutes, but 53 wins has me shut up. Now if Bibby goes down in a heap in the playoffs due to injury and Teague ain’t ready to step in, then we have a valid argument (should have played the kid more). Until then, I have to roll with Woody’s decision.

And it’s a good thing you clarified “increased minutes” over “must start immediately”. I have NEVER seen a bunch of people get the wrong idea so blatantly in my life. Wait, yes I have. Politics….

CP-If you’ll remember, Teague had that jumpshot down and working throughout training camp and preseason, but both he and his jumpshot got all but ignore by Woodson when the season started. I believe he was either the Hawks leading or 2nd leading preseason scorer. I can remember Sekou Smith making numerous comments about him having such an outstanding midrange gm and shot. We saw that tonight.

A PG with speed, quickness, penetrating ability and DEF will do more to advance the Hawks than a very limited and inconsistent 3pt shooting PG that does none of those things. Let’s hope Woodson recognizes that during the playoffs and gives Teague more mins, instead of riding Bibby into the ground no matter how he’s performing.

We’ve all started to see a trend where Bibby starts out on fire, then does very little after the 1st quarter. His 2nd half scoring is almost nonexistent, along with his DEF, which makes him a total liability. Replacing him with JCrawford does wonders for our OFF, but it doesn’t improve our DEF significantly. That’s where Teague can make his biggest difference, and Woodson has to get over himself and start realizing that.

How in the hell can a so called DEF minded HC keep relying on his 2 worst DEF guards(Bibby & Crawford), when DEF is needed, while completely ignoring his best on the ball defender(Teague), especially in the 2nd half? Here is an example of the backward though process Woodson often displays.

He waits until the last gm of the season to test his backup rookie PG and see if he can give him anything during the playoffs. Wouldn’t early in the regular season have been a better time to find that out, so he’d have time to work with him on developing his skills and confidence? A$$ backward thinking.

Rotation set: Woodson has settled on a rotation that includes reserves Crawford, Evans and Zaza Pachulia. Beyond those three, Woodson said the rotation for the playoffs is “up in the air.” Teague, Joe Smith, Jason Collins, and Mario West might play “in certain situations.”

I hope JJ’s thumb is ready for battle because the Bucks aren’t going to lay down! I don’t like predictions so I will just talk in terms of hope and expectation. I hope the HAWKS win in 5, but I expect them to win in 6. I think we’re a mature enough team not take the Buck’s lightly, but also aware that Salmons gives us a lot of problems. I am looking forward to seeing how Horford and Smoove play this series. With Horford being able to knock down jump shots and Smoove attacking inside (with NO back to back games), it should be fun to watch!

But all eyes will be on CRAWFORD!!!

I hear ya Big Ray.

I’ve never wanted Woody to jeapordize the team’s chances at getting a W by developing the rook. I just never thought it’d come to that. I just can’t buy that argument after watching our starters blow so many 4th quarter leads. There have been way too many other issues (lack of ball movement, lapses on defense) that have gone unaddressed THAT HAVE jeapordized our chances of winning games. I won’t ever get how people can seriously believe JT0 getting 5-6 extra minutes would.

Like you said though, 53 wins is a hell of an acheivement. I’m willing to wait to see the kid play. I’m just sick of hearing the bogus “he does’t have enough talent to play with the big boys” argument. But as you said, Woody himself has said that he sees JT0 leading this team in the future. So, I guess I gotta take his word for it.

I’ve been on the highway for the last 2 hrs and I saw the boxscore for tonight via my phone. After that, I read through this blog.

LMAO @ the comments.

WOW . . . this is all I was asking for out of Teague. I just wanted to see ONE TIME if this kid could ball or not. Just show me some of the talent that people hyped him up for.

I don’t give a damn who you play against. 24 pts ( 11 – 19 FG ) and 15 assists is DAMN IMPRESSIVE. Condense that down to his usual 7 – 9 minute a game output, and you’re talking about 6 pts – 4 assists. And I’d take that all day if he were able to do that in a short stretch.

It’s funny how people got on me when I asked the dude to give me 14 pts – 7 assists in 22 minutes . . . or 14 pts – 4 assists in that same time frame . . . but try to call me out when he goes HAM like he did tonight.

Now Jeff . . . channel this performance in the playoffs, and play at a HIGH LEVEL in the 2nd quarter when you get into a game. We know you can do it. You’re going to have 6 – 8 minutes to make that initial impact on the game.

Go ahead and go out and DO IT.

No more looking like you’re scared.

No more timid play.

Just go out there and PLAY YOUR GAME.

The “Rook” got baptized tonight. So I now want to see a “born again” Teague come the playoffs. Play with confidence, not with apprehension.

Northclyde,

I don’t think you can expect the kid to get right into a game and make have a serious impact on it if he’s not even in the game long enough to settle down. You can’t expect to see consistent numbers from a kid that gets inconsistent minutes.

JT0 did much of his damage tonight in the 2nd half. He was almost at 10 assists at halftime, but he definately got more aggressive looking for his own shot in the 2nd half. As many here have already mentioned, in most cases this season, JT0 hasn’t really had the chance to be as aggressive – simply because the offense is running through JJ/Jamal or some of the frontcourt guys. But tonight, he was able to play aggressive. And once he turned it up a notch, he was pretty impressive(relentless getting to the hoop). He also did a pretty good job staying in front of a much bigger Delonte West.

Tiger Woo–

You obviously didn’t watch any of the Heat game if you are guessing the fix wasn’t in.

The only problem is that Jersey’s starters are worse than the Heat’s backups.

They (Heat) shot 38% from the floor, jacked up twice as many 3 pointers as usual, committed an obvious charge late in regulation when a basket wins them the game and the Nets scored over half their points on layups and dunks.

To hell with them – glad they had to go longer and have to play double OT – too bad somebody didn’t get hurt – would have been what they deserved.

Anyway, I’m just glad the Hawks weren’t a position like that – I will admit, it’s pretty much a no-win deal, but get real Miami!!!!

I really wish I saw this game, because it sounds like Teague showed what he can do. I think for the Playoffs, Woody needs to stick with 5-8mins in the first half for Teague but start giving him 4-5 minutes in the 2nd half. (probably at the end of the 3rd) Teague needs to come in the game and concentrate on defense 1st and penetrating 2nd. I suspect that the Bucks will start double teaming Crawford, when he’s on the floor without JJ, so Teague can take advantage by getting in the lane. Woody’s going to ride Bibby hard, so the best we can hope for is he sticks with the plan that got him this far. Hopefully add a few more minutes.

Comparing the final regular season records for the Hawks and the former BIG 3 only the Hawks won more games this year than last year. Boston declined the most by winning 12 fewer games this year than last year. I actually think the Heat should be favored to defeat Boston this year in the first round. Boston’s decline should be obvious to all. The one area where they were able to maintain good results was their road record (26-15). I think this reflects the veteran status which gave them the ability to no panic late in the game on the road.

Cleveland won 5 fewer but the team’s personnel changed and I think they should be favored to win the East this year. However I think either the Hawks or the Magic will give them a run for it AND it will not be a big surprise if either were to defeat them in the ECF’s this year. And I will be cheering for either team to do so because until they got Antawn Jamison I was agreeing with Sir Charles that Orlando was the team to win the East. Or maybe my personal prejudice is showing because I do not like LBJ’s game.

Orlando’s final record exactly matches last year’s record. I think it is difficult to judge Orlando because of the exchange of Turkoglu for Carter. Last year I thought Turkoglu was the Magic’s best player. Carter is not an improvement. However, Jameer Nelson is definitely an improvement over Rafer Alston. So it would not surprise me at all if the Magic comes out of the East again.

The Hawks improved by 6 games over last year. They won three more games at home and three more games on the road where there record was 19-22. But the lack of focus on the road is the team’s biggest weakness. At home they matched the Magic’s win total and were only one lost before Cleveland. Had the Hawks matched the Magic’s road record (26-16) then they would have also matched Orlando’s overall record. How many of those blown fourth quarter losses were road games?

If I were to place bets on the East I would bet on the top three seeds plus Miami to win in the fist round. In the second round I would bet on the top two teams to prevail. And I would also take a plunge on the Magic to defeat the Cav’s once again. But as a non betting Hawks fan I think the Hawks have a definite shot to surprise the odds.

WABE-BIG RAY-how can anyone say there was the remotest possibility of us losing a single gm by giving Teague extended mins and opportunities to develop JTeague during the regular season? It’s not like Bibby was lighting it up offensively or defensively. Please explain to me how we were at risk of losing gms by giving more mins to Teague. Then explain how a so called DEF minded HC shielded us from any unnecessary loses by playing Bibby, a veteran PG that lacked:
(1) speed, quickness and the ability to penetrate and breakdown DEF,

(2) the ability to consistently create easy scoring opportunities for others,

(3 the ability to consistently push the ball on fastbreaks and/or take it all the way to the basket,

(4) the ability to play DEF(his HC felt the need to impliment a gimmick swithching DEF to compensate for his DEF shortcomings),

(5) the ability to adequately compensate for his DEF inadequacies by providing solid, consistent OFF production, like JCrawford does.

Bottomline, Woodson’s approach and philosophy toward handling JTeague guaranteed the team would get nothing more than very limited and inconsistent production and development from him. If anyone thinks it benefited the team more to play Bibby 27.4MPG, and end up getting .08SPG, 3.9APG, 9.1PPG on .416FG%, along with NO DEF, is not being realistic.

Teague managed 1.7APG, .05SPG, and scored 3.2PPG, with a .396 FG% in 10.1 very limited and inconsistent mins. I don’t see any logical justification for Woodson not giving him an additional 7-8 consistent MPG, which would have solidified his development and confidence, plus given us the speed, quickness, penetrating ability and DEF we’ve never gotten from Bibby.

If Woodson is resigned, it’ll be interesting to see if he’ll repeat this yrs philosophy of limiting JTeague’s mins, opportunities and development, while continuing to be stubborn and insist on playing Bibby extended mins and have the team carry him for another yr.

Ken Strickland,

I’m not sure if you misunderstood my post, but here’s what I said:

“I’ve never wanted Woody to jeapordize the team’s chances at getting a W by developing the rook. I just never thought it’d come to that. I just can’t buy that argument after watching our starters blow so many 4th quarter leads.”

I’ve always felt that there were numerous nights where we basically got next to nothing from Bibby. I never thought that letting the rook clock some extra minutes would do anything to hinder our chances of getting a W. That’s the point I was trying to make.

I appreciate every one of those 53 wins. But, it seems that some of the arguments some make here suggest that we would’ve had around 43 wins if we let the rook clock more minutes instead of the 53 we got – WHICH I DON’T BUY.

WilmaFlinstone

Im glad woody had the sense to give teague a lot of minutes last night. Now woody knows the mistake he made by not giving teague more minutes during the season. Had teague been given more quality minutes and had played a lot throughout the course of the season, Teague would have been the equivalent of Chris Paul and the Hawks problems at point guard would have been resolved.

Ken Strickland

WABE-you certainly got it right, I definitely misread your post, and I apologize for that mistake. I’m actually glad that I did, because there are still fans who think like Woodson when it comes to Bibby. Bibby is a complete liability if he’s not hitting his jumpers, and he’s a DEF liability no matter what.

I don’t buy into his INTANGLES as an excuse for him playing 27.5MPG and giving us limited scoring, assists, no penetration, creativity, or creating easy baskets for others, and absolutely no DEF. It’s just downright stupid to think we can continue to compete with the BIG BOYS with a slow, unathletic PG, with so many limitations on both ends of the court, playing so many mins.

The Orlando Magic’s entire OFF philosophy is based on penetrate and dish, and we’ve been unable to compete against them over the last 3yrs because of our inability to defend against it. And what is Woodson’s counter? He insists on using MBibby, our worst DEF player, to somehow stop JNelson’s penetration, or have JJ, AHorford, Zaza, JSmith or JoSmith try to stop him. This is his solution, rather than taking advantage of the speed, quickness, penetrating ability and DEF skills of ROOKIE PG JTeague, our best on the ball defender. STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES!!
