Washington–The Hawks aren’t watching scoreboards in Milwaukee or anywhere else because, really, what’s the point? With just three games left in the regular season the Hawks still don’t know if they will get the Bucks, Heat, or Bobcats in the first round of the playoffs.
“We are just concentrated on what we need to do,” Woody said. “Everything else will take care of itself. I think this thing is going to come all the way down until Wednesday, I really do.”
Further muddling all the playoff jockeying is neither Milwaukee nor any of the “bad” teams are laying down.
The Bucks somehow have won four in a row since Bogut’s injury. The ramshackle Pistons followed up their victory over the Hawks by going into Miami and beating the Heat. The Wizards turned back the Celtics here last night thanks to Shaun Livingston (remember him?).
This game is shaping up like the last time the Hawks were here, and remember how hard they had to work for that W. In addition to Livingston, guys like Andray Blatche, JaVale McGee and Nick Young are giving the Wiz a lift. This is the kind of thing that can happen with bad teams when guys aren’t sure about their futures.
The Celtics are in Milwaukee late tonight. If they lose and the Hawks win, that will give the Hawks a two-game lead with two to play. But the Hawks have to finish ahead of Boston so they still wouldn’t have the No. 3 seed locked down. The Hawks play at Milwaukee on Monday and the Celtics don’t play again until Tuesday.
Eventually Woody might have to make a decision on resting his regulars for the season finale against the Cavs.
“It all depends on how it plays out,” he said. “I’m not big on resting guys but I did it last year and it didn’t hurt us.”

With Milwaukee winning without Bogut and eventually keeping the 5th seed, we would pribably better off finishing 4th than 3rd, thus avoiding Miami…

What the hello-pete, CUNNINGHAM, did you let the AJC put up ARENAS’ stats as WIZARDS leader for? The man’s doing penance in a government half-way house for God’s-sake. No matter that he is the leader. He’s suspended by the league and has been for months. His name shouldn’t be on the list. Watch out for SHAUN LIVINGSTON. He’s doing a pretty good job at the point. Otherwise my suggestion is do what the HAWKS always do to the WIZARDS. Jump on them early and stay there until the game’s over.

To add to what Big Ray said . the players have to be disciplined enough to do it as well and I just dont think Woody trusts Al and Smoove to execute that much over 48 minutes . They would pick up a bunch of offensive fouls setting screens and be out of the game . A coach will gravitate to what his players does well.

Mike Bibby is still one of the best pure shooting point guards in the league. If he can get open shots, he’ll know them down about 80% of the time. That’s one of the reasons I prefer to have him on the floor over Teague who needs a lot of work on his shot.

Considering how well they executed on offense and how sloppy the Wizards have been with turnovers and passing, the Hawks really should be up by a lot more than 2. It can’t be that hard to get a hand in Nick Young’s face. If they clamp down on defense just a little, they should be able to pull away.
Big Ray
April 10th, 2010

A few observations:
1) The entire team is having moments of lazy defense. But some of the more egregious examples are in the backcourt, to include Crawford on Nick Young and Joe Johnson on Mike Miller.
2) Josh looked better in the one-on-one situation that ended in a taken (and made) jumper, than Marvin did in the final seconds of the first half.
3) Teague pushes the ball and gets his teammates invovled. Still needs to work on the jumper. However, some of those “silly fouls” are results of him switching correctly or getting caught on a pick and roll. Example: him fouling Al Thornton. Put Bibby or Crawford in the same situation and either it’s a foul, or Thornton scores. Only Joe does well in those situations.
4) Our ball movement overall has been decent, thanks to Josh Smith and Mike Bibby, mostly.
5) The Wizards are a talented team that could not play as well as they are without the influence of Flip Saunders. They’ll be dangerous next season.

Very entertaining game so far. Josh Smith and Bibby are playing great. Lets hope Bibby continues to shoot well in the second half. Joe is solid out there. The bench came in and did a good job. I really wish Joe Smith would come in on his jumper some. He gets plenty of looks but he is out there too far. Teague missed a few shots but at least he was being aggressive. Dude is a very good passer. Guys knock down some of those wide open shots he is creating for them and he easily has about 5 dimes now. The only problem I see so far is our defense and the rebounding. Guys have got to block out and they have to put in more effort on the defensive end. Still a very entertaining game…. Blatche is a good player but he has that me me me type attitude. When he learns to become a team player I think his game will be even better. I forgot what game it was but he got mad at his teammate because he grabbed the rebound that would have game him a triple double. Then on the free throw line he asked YI to let him rebound the miss. It was very funny but that’s some Ricky Davis type stuff.

“should we go after shaun livingston this summer?”
With the problems Arenas is having, I’d be surprised if they let Livingston go, although he would help any contending team.
There’s a real possibility that LIVINGSTON would prefer to be elsewhere next year. That said, the WIZZIES haven’t offered anything other than a standard extension for the year to LIVINGSTON due to the stalemate over ownership. Nothings being done by IRENE or TED at this point while the franchise spins round the bowl headed toward a swisher finish. As I said last night, It’s a frickin’ mess. If D.C. doesn’t lock him up, he would be a great pick-up for the HAWKS. Couldn’t happen to a nicer club. HAWKS on top in a tight race.

One more thing: even though Al Horford is often a better man-to-man defender than Josh Smith, it’s Smith who seems to give Andray Blatche more trouble on defense.
Smith is quicker and bothers his shot more. Blatche is a little quick for Horford. At the same time, Horford gives that narrow-arse McGee fits…

A lot of that falls on Jamal. Incorrect rotations, then a half-hearted attempt at running at Young. As if that will make him miss….
Bad thing is, nobody else is defending him any better.

Smoove will probably be back in at around the 7:00 minute mark. I think Woodson is just sticking with Pachulia right now since he’s had a nice night on the glass and is playing pretty solid defense on the Wizards front line.

I think Woody is saving Smoove for the last 6-8 minutes.
He has been doing that pretty consistently lately.
One big reason is because he knows he is going to have to sit Marvin down. So he has to have somebody else in the game until then. Right now, the lineup features bench players Zaza and Mo. Look to see Smoove back in AT LEAST by the 5 minute mark.
That, and Zaza has been more active on the glass this game. And he’s throwing his weight around with McGee and Blatche, which they can’t handle so well.

The Wizards do have some good young pieces, but they are still lacking a go-to guy at any position. Nick Young strikes me more as a Jamal Crawford type, a streaky scorer who is better suited to a bench role. I like Livingston and Blatche, and McGee shows some promise although he needs to get more physical.
Their draft pick this year will go a long way towards determining who they keep and who they trade.

4 minutes left and still no Smoove. I guess he just likes the bigger lineup with Zaza out there guarding McGee and Horford on Blatche. Can’t really argue, since it’s worked in this quarter — the Hawks are finally looking like they care about playing D. Wonder how Smoove’s taking it though.

Blatche’s recently-increased scoring average is really kind of deceiving. This guy is averaging a lot of points, but he’’s really more of a volume shooter. Tonight, he’s taken 23 shots already and has 22 points. If Al Horford had taken 23 shots, it’s almost a guarantee that he’d have more than 22 points.

Blatche strikes me as the kind of player who would be really good if he was on a team with a strong coach and a couple of veteran presences in the locker room who could get him to play smart. He’s got a ton of talent. In a situation like the one he’s in, though, he’s got a really good chance of becoming the next Antoine Walker or Derrick Coleman, a super-talented forward who never quite figures out how to win.

No KG tonite?
Boston tanked the season about seven years ago to try & get that extra
Ping-Pong ball for the Lottery Pick to grab Dwight Howard & ended up with the
#5 pick instead.
Stern was pissed & chastised the GM. I think Doc was the Coach then. Then they got
KG in a block-buster. That was Kevin McHale throwing an assist to Bird.
Then McHale got busted for tampering with Joe Smith on a re-sign deal & lost a 1st round
Draft pick the next year.
Looks like Boston is tanking again & conceeding the three seed to Atlanta to avoid the
Heat in round 1.
Just reminiscing.

Boston is really controlling Milwaukee so far tonight. Even though it is just a three point game, the Celtics look like they have been dictating the tempo for the majority of the game. Great Win tonight! Even though the Wizards are a weak team, they did take it to Boston last night and played well for most of the game tonight. Good job by Woody in finding a good defensive group and letting them finish the game. Evans was playing much better defense than Marvin and Zaza was playing well as an enforcer. The fourth quarter defense was very good and I liked the offensive ball movement. (many more pick and rolls)

Ben I would actually like Boston to win tonight’s game, because I would like the Heat to move past the Bucks into the 5th spot. If the HAWKS win out they will have the 3rd spot regardless, but we need some more losses by Milwaukee so we can play them. This makes the next two games BIG, because we need to beat Milwaukee to give them another loss and also send a message that we are serious about taking care of them in the first round. I think we can beat either Miami or Milwaukee in a 7 game series, but I don’t want a long series. I think it would take at least 6 games to beat Miami and it would be true war! I don’t think Miami was very happy about losing last year and they know they can beat us! We haven’t played well against Milwaukee, but they are missing their center and they don’t have Wade!

This Washington team is going to be trouble next season. Especially if they can remain healthy and get rid of Gilbert Arenas (maybe that’s hoping for too much, if you’re a Wiz fan).
RAY:
Google to “hoops hype WIZARDS salaries” and look up the contracted players for next season. There are eight including a team option on JOSH HOWARD, a player option for QUINTON ROSS, and an 80% scale offer on RANDY FOYE. I don’t expect any of the three to be in a D.C. uniform next season for various reasons.
ARENAS will be in a WIZARDS uni for at least the next two years when he has a player option. If he exercises that he’ll have 45 million left for two years, and the WIZZIES may be able to do something. Until then, no.
