Atlanta Hawks at Pistons: Bibby’s back, J.J. rests, Pistons show life

Bibby is back in the starting lineup vs. the Pistons. Zaza is available. Collins is not. J.J. is out until at least Friday vs. Toronto. Woody said: “If Joe had to play, he could play. But this gives Joe an opportunity to rest as well. He’s not played as many minutes as last year but he’s still top 10 in minutes played (he’s actually 11th). That’s OK. He’s not burned as much as last year and hopefully that will help for the playoffs.”

Rip Hamilton (ankle) is out for the Pistons. So are Tayshaun Prince (personal), Jason Maxiell (back) and Chris Wilcox (hamstring).

– Other than the daily injury tidbits, it seems the Hawks are in a sorta holding pattern. The Magic clinched the Southeast. The Hawks’ race with Boston for No. 3 in the East looks like it could come down to the final couple games. There’s lots happening elsewhere, though, starting with the Pistons.

Coach John Kuester apparently finally lost it and lit up his team during a practice. Charlie Villanueva, a $35 million bust (both for the Pistons and my fantasy team, though at least I didn’t pay him), took to Twitter to complain about it. So did rookie Austin Daye. And then both players missed the team flight to Philly on Monday. That’s an overpaid vet and a rook on a bad team complaining about their coach getting mad and then making matters worse by missing the flight. Nice.

What happens after all of that? Naturally, the Pistons beat the Sixers last night to end an 11-game losing streak with Villanueva going for 25 points and Daye for nine. So the Pistons might be rejuvenated just in time to welcome the Hawks to The Palace (though Prince did play at Philly).

– The Hawks could use a W since the Chris Bosh-less Raptors will be hard-pressed to put up a fight against Boston tonight. The Celtics are a good road team and they are still smarting after losing to the the Knicks a couple nights after they beat the Cavs.

– Don’t look now but as my boy Perk notes Dwyane Wade is ticked off. He’s balling and the Heat is climbing in the standings at the same time Milwaukee is just trying to survive after Bogut’s surgery. The Heat has unofficially replaced the Bucks as the team the Hawks don’t want to see in the first round.

Wow! The injury bug is biting everybody, even I got stung last nite on the back of my scalp while sitting in my
Living room watching the Hawks get a beat-down.

I’m on the injured reserve list, in case Bibby goes back down. Hey Coach! Put me in! LoL

It was a yellow-jacket. Does that make me a ramblin’ wreck?

Bottom line is the team that stays healthy has a chance to win. Naggiing injuries? You got to play through that.

MJ had a toe injury & he cut a hole in his Air-Jordans for the play-offs! Warriors never quit. Re-Hab is for quitters & The Hawks aint no quitters!

Hawks missed Bibby last night. They looked so ragged on offence, turnover after turnover, compacted by bad defence. They must step up tonight!

Go, Hawks, Go! Let’s get 50 wins tonight!

Bill Simmons on Sheed:

very entertaining as usual, however, he is fooling no one: as a die hard Celts fan he has written this as a desperate attempt to breathe some life into Sheed on time for the playoffs… Hope is the last thing to die…

From the previous blog.

Clyde,

This is Marvin’s 5th year.

northcyde,

Odom is a great example. I think Odom has the potential to be a top 10 PF, and a top 10 SF at the same time. But he disappears sometimes, no matter how Kobe or Phil Jackson gets on him.

My issue with Marvin though, is I dont think we should have given him a 5 year deal at $7.5 mil per, when we still didn’t know what to expect, because he only had 1 good year out of 4.

But I agree with you. There is nothing Woody can do or say to get Marvin going. it is all on Marvin. And as long as he is the 5th or 6th option on offense, I dont know if he will ever reach his potential here.

Let’s go Hawks. Keep the one game lead on the Celtics.

Man, Bibby is on fiyah.

Since Marvin is being matched up with Austin Daye, it would be nice to see him have a good game. But I wont hold my breath.

Hawks looking good so far. I like it.

With Josh having 2 fouls already, I wonder if he will sit for the rest of the half?

Hawks had a big lead, and now we’re trailing. That’s not good.

I think Woody should put Teague in. Why have Bibby play the entire first quarter, when we will need him in the second quarter and second half?

Sloppy play. Lack of team fundamentals (plays).

We just run around looking for basic two men plays which are poorly executed and too evident.

A moderately alert defense gets us into trouble when we miss JJ and Craw is not clicking on all cylinders…

Bibby came out on fire. Pistons are getting to the rim at ease though. And I see some are still blaming the other pg for the terrible defense by our front line in last nights game. Funny thing is last game against the Pistons and Bobcats the starting pg stunk it up but I guess we over look things such as that

Ree Roe,

There is no way of knowing if Bibb would have made a difference last night? Must i remind you what Bibby’s total against Charlotte is? 13 points and 8 assists in 3 games COMBINED. that works out to an average of 4 pts and less than 3 assists.

I seriously don’t understand why teams don’t play zone against the Hawks for all 48 minutes. If they did, I’d be willing to bet the Hawks don’t crack 75 points per game. So much for #3 in the league in offensive efficiency.

And it’s not like they handle the zone any better with Joe Johnson.

It’s so OBVIOUS Marvin HATES dribbling. LOL he was double teamed and had NO idea what to do.

“Boy did this game turn around,” says Bob.

Yeah, exactly at the time Detroit started playing zone.

I wonder what the people who think Woody does no wrong have to say about this. You think Milwaukee and Miami don’t have game film on the Hawks’ absolutely pathetic offense against the zone? You think the Hawks won’t see quarter after quarter of zone in the playoffs? Woody has had at least three months to figure out an answer (that’s about how long teams have been zoning up the Hawks), and so far he has come up with NOTHING.

Najeh,

The key for the Hawks is their defense. When they defend well, they can rebound and start their fast break game.

Early in the year, we were near the top in fast break points. But I wouldnt be surprised if our fast break scoring is way down as our defense has gotten worse.

I can’t wait for the playoffs, because the book is out on the Hawks.

“The key for the Hawks is their defense. When they defend well, they can rebound and start their fast break game.”

You are right, but the common cliche is that the game slows down in the playoffs and teams who execute in the half court best end up winning. The Hawks’ half court execution against the zone is absolutely pitiful, and they can’t count on being able to win the turnover battle against good teams in the playoffs. Not to mention, it’s not like they take great care of the ball against the zone anyway.

The zone and the 3 are the great equalizers in basketball. They are the reasons why sh-tty college teams beat teams with multiple lottery picks every year in the NCAA tournament, and they can very easily be the reason why a team with inferior talent dispatches the Hawks in the first round, if they don’t figure it out quick.

Crawford does need to pass the ball though. But so far, once he puts his head down, he’s not giving it up.

On the other side though, if JJ was 2-8, some might say the rest of the team is not shooting so wel anyway. And some might say JJ needs the shots to get going.

Hawks playing a lot of one on one right now. Very little ball movement.
