Hawks Squawks: Hawks 109, Lakers 92

– The Hawks dominated the Lakers in every which way. The offense was unstoppable. The defense was excellent. The bench was superb.

– The Lakers are tougher with Andrew Bynum (Achilles’) of course but that shouldn’t take away from the Hawks’ complete effort. “Any time you beat the Lakers, the defending (NBA) champions, it speaks volumes,” Woody said. “If we are committed for 48 minutes we can beat any team in the league, I really believe that.”

– It sure looked like it tonight. The defensive intensity, rotations, closeouts and rebounding were all on point. “Guys got after it,” Marvin said. “We took on the individual challenge to defend.”

– “I was satisfied with every position defensively,” Woody said, and how many times does he say that?

Kobe got 28 points but only eight after halftime. He showed why he’s the best during that 14-point second quarter, when the Hawks did pretty much everything they could to slow him but he just made tough shots.

– “They did a fantastic job,” he said. “They’re playing with a lot of energy and confidence.”

J.J. was just as good as Kobe with 25 points, eight assists and just one turnover. “Joe played like I thought he would play,” Woody said. “Kobe brings out the best in everybody.”

– “Just for the Lakers, period,” J.J. said. “Because they’ve been so dominant over the years.”

– After halftime, the Hawks hardly heard a peep from Lakers fans. “There were a lot of Lakers fans but that’s to be expected,” Mo said. “They’ve earned that. But it was good to have our fans cheer for us by the time the game ended. We definitely are going to need that support,”

– It’s not like the Lakers weren’t motivated. They are way clear of Dallas at the top of the Western Conference and probably won’t catch Cleveland for the league’s top record. But Kobe had said they were “on edge” after losing at New Orleans on Monday because they don’t want to relax heading to the playoffs.

– “They just outplayed us,” Phil Jackson said. “Regardless of inspiration, they beat us to balls, they were quicker to the offensive boards.”

– Good move by Woody to stick with Zaza over Al, who was strangely passive–why did he keep passing up those open jumpers Gasol was giving him?

– Zaza made a difference. It wasn’t just the 10 points and 10 rebounds, it was the way he made sure the Lakers got nothing easy when they came into his area. And no one fires up the guys on the bench like Zaza, whose highlight was a drive through the lane after a dunk after faking a pass.

– Mo (18 points, 7/9 FG) also was good off the bench. The Rook’ was solid. With those three getting it done it hardly mattered that Jamal had an off night shooting (5 of 14).

– “Our bench was huge again tonight,” Woody said. “They’ve been playing extremely well and we’re going to need them to play that way the rest of the way.”

– Woody seems to be trusting his reserves more. Tonight makes six straight games of at least 14-plus minutes for Mo, six straight games of 10-plus minutes for Zaza and two straight games of nine-plus minutes for Teague.

– “We are starting to get more opportunities to play,” Mo said. “We need to step in and get our rhythm as well (as the starters).”

– The Hawks had just five turnovers, none in the second half, and against six steals.

– J.J. had a swollen right thumb. “In the first quarter I was rasslin’ with Artest,” he said. “My thumb bent back. I was just keeping a heat pack on it.”

– I’m out, Hawks fans.

JT0 can get UP btw. Loved his breakaway dunk in the 2nd half. Awesome game from Joe too – neither Artest nor Kobe could do anything to him. He burned Kobe with a crossover real good in the 4th. Great bench play. Mo Evans…wow. Hope we can play like this in Cleveland on Friday.

I’m just glad to see the hawks play with some attitude. They didn’t let the lakers push them around got a couple of techs called a hard flagrant on gasol and just overall physical play. If they play like this. On friday lebron will be pouting just like kobe was tonight. Go hawks

Man this was awesome. That’s why it’s so maddening when they play down to their level of competition. Because the Hawks are capable of games like this on almost any night against any competition. Even mighty Cleveland and Orlando.

Hawks deserve a standing O for this game. I’m sure Lakers fans will use the absence of Bynum as an excuse, but Bynum has never been worth a 17-point swing. Wish I saw this game, but just looking at the box score and the blog posts, it’s pretty clear that the bench came to play and the defensive effort never let up. Great win.

Just saw some of these highlights. Looks like Zaza played even better than his stat line.

I was hoping for a Zaza vs. Kobe fight, but I guess Mo Evans and Ron Artest glaring at each other is better than nothing.

They didn’t say anything about the crowd during the highlight video, but I’m hoping the Hawks fans in attendance shut the Lakers fans up.

I did see one possession in the first half, when Joe Johnson was D-ing up Kobe and forced him into an airball. That may be as good as I’ve seen anyone defend Kobe on a possession in his career. Joe straight up embarrassed him.

Looking at the schedule a couple of weeks ago, this game shaped up great for the Hawks. Rested and catching the Lakers on the last game of a 5 game road swing.

The Hawks deserve some credit for their D, but the fact of the matter is that the Lakers missed a lot of open 3’s tonight. They couldn’t buy one from out there until the beginning of the 4th quarter when the game was pretty much out of reach.

5 of the next 7 on the road. Another chance for the Hawks to prove that they are contenders, not pretenders. Gotta be able to beat some good teams on the road to have any chance to advance in the playoffs.

Haven’t seen the last few games before this one. So is Woody finally making effective use of his bench or is the bench just playing more effectively when he uses them? Either way, I hope it continues. The team I saw tonight can make a serious run. Now, if someone could just get Marvin an adrenaline shot, this team would be in business.

Thanks Hawks, you really made us proud tonight. The Hawks played D with that F word that you often hear about but don’t always see. Of course that word is Focus. And although the Lakers seemed to hardly play any defense at all, you have to give it to the Hawks for being able to exploit what is normally a very good defensive team by executing at a high level on offense.

This was an awesome win for the Hawks. It did my heart good to see all of those Lakers fans in their Kobe Bryant jerseys having to shut the funk up. They came to Philips fully expecting to be able to talk smack to the Hawks fans after the game and it was nice to see them on TV, almost all of them looking like they wanted to cry.

If the Hawks can carry some of this momentum with them up to Cleveland, it could be a huge boost for them when the playoffs roll around in a few weeks.

Big Ray

That was an awesome game. The Hawks played ball for a full 4 quarters, and it showed.

Credit that to the team and the coaching staff. Don’t give one ounce of that to it being the Lakers and “Kobe bringing out the best in everybody.” What a bunch of hogwash.

Joe Johnson didn’t just outduel Kobe Bryant. He was a better leader, better teammate, and better player last night. Two of my favorite plays included Joe harassing Kobe into an airball, then Joe blowing right by him on the other end, and scoring at the rim. Take that!

Woody did a masterful job in this game. Not only did he make the right substitutions at the right time, but he kept those guys in the mix the whole time, rather than yanking them at the end of the first half, never to return in the second. And man, did they respond.

Zaza was great. He played well beyond his stat line, and nobody on this team gets in your face quicker than he does! When Mo Evans pushed Ron Artest (after Artest fouled him TWICE in the same play, and got away with it), and Artest came after him, it was Zaza who shoved him away. Make no mistake, Zaza wasn’t there to break up that impending fight. He was there to fight for his teammate. Say what you want about him. We need that guy.

For those who want to credit that loss, even partially, to the absence of Bynum, let me give you some perspective. The Lakers got to the NBA Finals (and didn’t lose easily to the Celtics) with that same lineup in ‘07-’08. Not only was Bynum missing, but they didn’t have Ron Artest, they had Trevor Ariza. So save the excuses. Nobody ever feels sorry for the mighty Lakers. They didn’t lose that game.

The Hawks won it.

This was a great win and confidence builder for the Hawks. The guys played their hearts out and played as a team. The bench came in and did one of the best jobs they have done all season. We will definitely make more than 50 wins this season and if we play like we played tonight we should finish no worse than 5-3 in the final stretch. Woody did a great job tonight and having been at games for the Hawks were the ATL fans looked like the minority, the crowd tonight was overwhelmingly loud and for the home team. I loved that pan around the crowd to all the solemn Lakers fans. GO HAWKS!!!!!

The Hawks played all 48 minutes like the great team we all know they can be. The enitre team contributed, 7 players in double figures in scoring, the Captain showing the way on both ends of the floor, hell Jason Collins even matched Marvin Williams in scoring.

I loved how the LA faithful fell virtually silent from halftime on.

“So is Woody finally making effective use of his bench or is the bench just playing more effectively when he uses them? ”

Watch us play other good teams and you be the judge. The guy said we will shorten our rotation in the playoffs (what, we’re going from 7 players to 6.5?) but that Joe Smith and J.Collins should look out for minutes. He has no idea how to use his rotations. The only reason Mo got minutes was because Joe was hurt early. ZaZa took forever to get in in the 2nd half and Teague got “big” minutes compared to what he usually gets.

I don’t care what anyone says, the Hawks played like an elite team last night. As another blogger stated that game last night is maddening to a lot of us. We know the Hawks can duplicate last nights performance on any giving night, but mentally there are nights when they just don’t show up. (That’s every team in the NBA, but the Hawks seem to play down to their competition).

The entire team and coaching staff did an excellent job last night. Big Up to Woodrow, the team executed and played their azz off. This is one game that won’t be deleted from my DVR.

@JJM (12:13 am comment) … Would Marvin Williams be better coming off the bench? He was a 6th man in his only season at UNC and was made a starter probably by virtue of his projected talent/draft position/contract.
Granted, Mo might not be the best fit as a starter either, but consider something………until maybe drafting someone in June so M. Williams can be our 6th/7th man.

Did not see the game, but from reading the blogs and seeing highlights, this was a great win for the Hawks. Players played great, and Woody coached great.

This is the ZaZa Rick thought we were getting when we resigned him. If he can play like this in the playoffs, it will allow Woody to go with ZaZa, Al and Josh on the court together (depending on matchups). And if Al happens to get early fouls, ZaZa can step in and keep it going. We need that.

Great job defensively too. This just reinforces (to me) that JJ can be an elite defender when he wants to.

Starters played well, and bench played well.

I’m starting to think that starting Mo over Marvin might not be the thing to do. Because Mo might not be as effective on the starting 5, and Marvin might not be any better on the bench. We just need Marvin to play solid defense, crash the boards, and make the open shot. But he has to step his game up in the playoffs, especially in the second round.

Good job by Woody sticking with the bench again. And they have responded with their play. I did read a couple comments that make you wonder if the bench is taking a subtle jab at Woody for not playing them consistently until recently.

From espn.com, “”You can’t win the championship with five guys,” Pachulia said.”We have some great players on the bench. Why not use them?”

From ajc.com, “We are starting to get more opportunities to play,” Mo said.

Anyways, on to Cleveland for a date with the King. Last time we played them in Cleveland, it was the second of a back to back, and we had a chance to win that game (shot-clock malfunction). Hopefully Hawks can build on this effort on Friday, and beat the Cavs.

Great game for the Hawks. A complete effort all around. ZaZa was player of the game for good reason. The bench crew really has bonded together and has developed an identity. I was a little dissapointed with the number of Laker fans at the game (I guess I shouldn’t have been), but the team let us homers rub it in all their faces!!!!

A note, on a highlight package after Al gets his third foul in the second quarter the camera cuts to a serious looking ZaZa and Crawford leans over and is giving him a pep talk in his ear. Now, that is what I am talking about!!!!!

One more thing, Joe Johnson is the man.

To Zach: “How is that possible?” First of all, if you look at NBA box scores, the Bucks are always on the wrong side of Free Throw Attempts, and if you saw the Cleveland-Milwaukee game last night, you would understand. The Cavs took the game into the paint and the Bucks foul like mad man – which may not be bad against the Cavs, they are not a good free throw shooting team. Within these comments (and in past comments), fans line up to claim the league has special rules for Lebron when it comes to fouling. Get off of it – none of you see enough games to be able to make that comment. The man is a freight train going to the hoop and most of time there is a lot of contact, which gets called and many times does not. You all should “buck up” on those comments, they are lame.

How many times have you typed that same thing this year. Get over it. the guy is a bum. People don’t just become decent players in the playoffs. They would show some signs. Mo should no doubt be starting at the 2. He brings more energy and defensive presence and hustle, let alone scoring ability than Marvin does. Marvin will be the same guy starting or off the bench. He just does not have IT. Everyone else on our team who has had a bad year, Mo, Bibby and Zaza have already proved in their careers that they have the ability to step up. Marvin has not.

terrell,

“Marvin stinks! All we need is a sf, and we’d be scary.”

We’ve got one. Joe Johnson.

Great game by the Hawks last night. Building was electric. One thing that does concern me is Josh starting to take more long jumpers. Please continue to play the game you have played all year Josh. No one doubts that if you practice you can hit that shot, but there is no need to add that shot to your game now. Mo Evans should be starting. If Al continues to hit that 15 to 20 foot jumper in the playoffs, we could be very dangerous. To all the Bibby haters, Bibby is a clutch player and will assert himself in the playoffs. He will still be a defensive liability, but he will make up for it on the offensive end. Good job by Woodson. Mo and Zaza both play with a chip on their shoulder, and it is just what this team needs. We need a couple of bad guys to even out all these nice guys we have on the team. Good job Hawks. MC please stop quoting Marvin in your articles. @ Zach–remember the cavs drive the ball to the goal so they get to shoot a lot of free throws. that is the most un-balanced number i’ve ever seen. WOW!

keeping on the same topic–i heard kevin garnett and paul pierce and even rivers belly-aching over how many free throws durrant shot against them last night. let me say this–if i was a celtics fan or player i would never i repeat never complain about officiating. they have gotten call after call decade after decade..so please shut the heck up.

i’m a falcons, hawks and braves fan in that order–and i never complain about the braves not getting the ball and strike calls–i know we got some slack over the past few years too…but not anywhere close to what the celtics, bulls, lakers, cavs, niners and cowboys get every year.

Be that as it is Ray, it is hard to make definitive and conclusive analysis when time, growth and intangibles are involved.

I agree with you on the win, excellent. I loved the toughness and resiliency we showed where it mattered, in the paint. Those were great hard fouls from Zaza and Marvin and Mo too. Physical play in the paint …my kinda of team! People being knocked on their butts trying to penetrate our lanes. Kobe wasn’t smiling either….

Would Bynum have been a physical presence and factor? No doubt. We aren’t the lakers but as Ive been saying since day 1, we are a physical center away from competing from a championship!

It ridicules that I keep getting these dumb questions from guys like Grandad and Sautee that ask” what have you got again Horford?” I don’t know how I can be any clearer. Take our last to games against the 2 teams that were last years finalists. We beat Orlando in part because horford was forced to the bench, was ineffective and had his minutes restricted. Last night was the same results. Horford’s block shots to personal foul ratio is upside down and if it were a mortgage it would be in danger of foreclosure. His steals to turn over ratio is also lacking. Did I mention he fluctuates between #18 and # 29 on the block shot lists for centers?Awful defender. I’m not dishing him but I’m not going to mention every time I present his defensive numbers that I think he is a very good power forward ( not as good as Josh), in order to circumvent the accusations of hating horford. We wont win a championship with him as center…Have I said this before?

The bottom line is defense wins championships. Last night we defended the paint and the rim like a first class team who is in the hunt for a championship. Horford is not physical enough to get that job done, no, not on the defensive end.

Great game, and as usual, good blogging Ray!

Yes, I agree. Great win for the Hawks.

But it really ticks me off that this team will “get up” for quality opponents, then look completely lethargic against lesser clubs. There is no excuse that. This team could easily be over 50 wins already (unnesessary losses to Golden State, Detroit, Philly, Toronto, two to New York, etc). And mind you, the Hawks had 4th quarter LEADS in the majority of these games.

I don’t know if it’s coaching, or if this team is just really immature still. Whatever it is, I’m not so sure they can beat Milwaukee or the Heat in a seven game series because of this ongoing problem.

Daniel

Blue- I would say that the team’s tendency to play up and down is due to immaturity, but it is vastly improving. Moving into the rare air of consistent, confident focused play night in and night out despite the competition is really the final step this team needs to take.

I think yawl should boo Marv during the play-offs,
that should help.

Im glad you arent on my team! Its one thing to have a criticism, it another to be contrary to team spirit. As you know, I think horford should come off the bench because of his weak defense but Id never boo him or ask others who share my opinion to boo him. Horford is doing what he’s told and the best he can, for that I applaud him. I also applaud Marvin. Woody has his roles to fill and hes winning by role playing.

For you call for hate I Boo you Grandad. Lets stay unified. Its ok to criticize but leave the hate at the bubba crew conventions or tea parties, which ever you attend.

Their is always agruments against Horford playing out of position and not being a true center, but my arguement is this……..Al’s size and youth allows him to run the floor quickly, make quick moves under the basket, hit 15 footers with ease, and allows him to be quicker than most other true centers in the league. Al has versatility that other centers don’t.

I know the Hawks inconsistency is a problem, but are you serious?

The Hawks can’t beat the Bucks or Miami is a seven game series? In your opionion.

Be clear the Hawks can beat any team in the NBA in a 7 game series when they play the way they did last night including Clev, LA & Orl.

Blue,

If the Hawks did NOT have home court in the first round, I would be concerned. But with 4 games in ATL, I dont care who the first round opponent is, I am confident that the Hawks will take care of business and advance.

However, if the Hawks do not advance pass the first round, then I will call Clyde to see if there is room on his “FIRE WOODY” wagon.

Rod from CP,

I’m not saying that Marvin will step up in the playoffs. And I’m not holding my breath. But as a Hawks fan, I will continue to root for him (although I think Sund made the wrong move signing Marvin to the contract he did).

Grandad,

Boo Marvin? No way should we boo one of our own players (regardless of how bad he has played). And its not like he is making us lose games by himself. I can understand if you dont want to cheer for him. But don’t boo him.

And for the record, I dont think booing will help anyway. I dont think anything or anyone can help Marvin. Only Marvin can help Marvin. He is who BK didn’t think he was.

My point is you just don’t know what Hawks team will show up from night-to-night brother.

As last night proved, when these guys are focused, they can beat anybody …………. I repeat …….. ANYBODY in this league.

However, as cliche as it sounds, they are notorious for playing “down” to the level of their competition. Sure, the Heat and the Bucks are both inferior teams, but that’s what troubles me. Why did the Hawks need seven games to defeat the Heat in Round 1 last year? I really hope they’re able to turn it up a notch and go hard once the playoffs start. Because a first-round exit would be catastrophic.

You make a good point about the 4 home games. I just don’t want them to play around with D-Wade and company, or the Bucks for that matter. If the Hawks have these guys down, they need to go for the jugular and quit playing around. If the Hawks make it to the second round, then at least win a couple of games against Orlando or Cleveland, I will consider this to be a successful season. Bring in a couple more key pieces in the off season, then try to go further next year …. All realistic goals I believe.

EXCELLENT WIN LAST NIGHT! The way we played, especially on DEF, we would have beaten anybody, including Cleveland. HC Mike Woodson deserves credit for doing some good coaching and for making some solid decisions. He used Bibby the way he should have when he was knocking down those jumpers and benched him when he wasn’t. He played Teague at the right time and took advantage of his speed, quickness and DEF. He also didn’t force us to rely on, or get hurt by, his beloved switching DEF.

I loved the way he left Zaza in the gm when he was dominating Gasol, especially on DEF. I also want to take my hat off to AHorford for showing his maturity and understanding of the gm. Gasol’s length gave him trouble inside in the 1st half, so in the 2nd half, especially down the stretch, he went outside and starting hitting his deadly jumper. THIS WAS THE MOST COMPLETE TEAM WIN OF THE ENTIRE SEASON, AND EVERYONE HAD A HAND IN THE OUTCOME.

Anyone finding anything or anyone to complain about in last nights dominating win is just a HATER, plain and simple. I like what Crawford said before the gm. He basically said that in the playoffs we won’t have to worry about the problems we seem to have against lesser teams like the Knicks and the Warriors because lesser teams like them won’t be in the playoffs.

We’ve certainly started gearing up against the better teams, and the showdown against the Cavaliers in Cleveland will be a perfect test for us. Cleveland has to win that gm decidedly, after getting some home cooking and still struggling to win the last 2 against us. They must prove to themselves they can prevent us from entering the playoffs and doing to them what Orlando did to them last yr.

We have minimal post presence on this team.

This means that Joe, Crawford, Bibby, and Mo have to keep making shots for us to win games. Yesterday’s game was a prime example of feeding off the crowd energy, and the Hawks always enjoy playing the Lakers at home.

However, anyone who is satisfied with Horford’s post game must be kidding. The guy holds the ball for 10 seconds then takes one of those egergious awkward fadeaway jumpers against great players like Duncan & Gasol. This guy needs to get better moves…fast.

The Hawks are very deep but not as deep as Orlando and Cleveland. I don’t forsee this team winning games on the road in the playoffs because everyone has to be clicking (besides Marvin — he is !@#$ing garbage) for us to win big games

I hope he doesnt tear a foot out of socket this year. I noticed that of the horford defenders on this site refer to his offense as the measurement of their stamp of approval when I can scream DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS TILL THE ROOSTERS CROW! Its about defense, not trying to dis your hero nor his….14 pts.

“I also want to take my hat off to AHorford for showing his maturity and understanding of the gm. Gasol’s length gave him trouble inside in the 1st half, so in the 2nd half…”

He rode the pine during the crucial moments when the game was on the line. I glad he understood and was not offended that we needed a defensive presence and the back up center is a better defender than he so he accepted his role….picking splitters out of his azzzz.

Big Ups to Zaza for playing defense and shutting down the lane, cant blame that on bibby. Loved the hard foul from Marv too….Men in the paint! Zaza is not the solution to our lack of defense but he is a better choice than using a power forward to protect the rack….Send in the f-ing Marines not the boy scouts!

I always find it hilarious how people give Woody props for coaching a good game . . . but only if we beat a real good team.

Zaza’s great play enabled Woody to do what he always do . . . keep players out of the game in the 1st half who have 2 fouls. This is something that he’s been criticized heavily for over the years. But he does it to obviously protect his essential players. If the bench player steps up, Woody has ALWAYS given that player extended minutes. Zaza’s excellent 2nd quarter, plus the fact that we built a lead on them, enabled Woody to do just that.

In the 2nd half, Horford and JJ took over the quarter, and extended the lead. So with us being up 16 late, Woody has the luxury to insert Teague into the lineup, something that he ALWAYS does, if we’re up big in the 2nd half.

And with Mo Evans playing extremely well, and Marvin having no impact on the game, it was an easy call for Woody to give Mo the extended minutes . . . then leave him in the game after it was obvious that the Lakers weren’t going to make a run late.

The facts are that the bench played well enough to earn Woody’s trust last night. It’s the best collective game that they’ve played all year. And it’s nice to see Zaza and Mo playing well as we approach the playoffs.

Woody knows his team. He always has.

Has anyone else notice Teague lately? His game has vastly improved. He doesn’t look lost on the court anymore. He is emerging as an “in the paint threat” and is playing with more confidence and authority. I see his game resembling more of a Tony Parker type. He seems to be more effective with Crawford in the lineup with him because he plays better in a faster tempo compared to the Bibby/JJ slower tempo. Maybe his past problem was trying to emulate Bibby. Clearly, walking with the ball is not his game. He needs to be running, dashing, and slashing to be effective.

Last nights win made me feel like I felt the 1st part of the season when we were playing solid team ball and creaming teams. Horford hit the nail on the head when he mentioned the lack of ball movement as our biggest problem, particularly in the 4th quarter of gms. We maintained good ball movement last night and got just about whatever shots we wanted. I loved how JJ responded to the way he was being physically played by RArtest. He took the challenge, but didn’t completely disrupt ball movement in the process.

To be honest, while RArtest is still a physical presence defensively, JJ exposed the fact he’s lost the quickness and foot speed that made him an All DEF demon. There were time when JJ went by him like he wasn’t there, and without having to pound the ball. And Marvin did an excellent job of relegating LOdom to being a nonfactor. Without Kobe making one difficult shot after another, and Farmer hitting those 3’s, they would have suffered their biggest whipping and embarrassment of the season.

THIS IS WHAT I’VE WANTED TO SEE CONSISTENTLY ALL SEASON FROM THE PLAYERS, ESPECIALLY JJ, AND WOODSON. If Woodson can continue the good job of coaching he did against LA and Orlando, I’d recommend he get a 10yr contract extension. I just what him to get more involved in doing the things this teams needs from him.

When raising a baby, there are basic things you must do and things you don’t have to do, because the baby is too young to ask questions or make decision or pose any problems beyond existing. As the child starts to think, question and becomes more aware of his surrounding, the parent has to take on more responsibility.

The same process goes into coaching a flegling team like the Hawks were when Woodson became the HC. This team has become more self sufficient, started to question things, and is more aware of its potential, expectations and abilities. But like a young teenager, it still needs input, direction and encouragement.

If Woodson consistently uses our bench, properly utilizes each players talents and strengths, while limiting the effects of their limitations, makes proper adjustments and changes when needed, and employs them during gms, I have no doubt we can win it all, and I’m not just blowing smoke.

We’ve reached the part of the season where all of the banter and BS about Bibby, JJ, Zaza, Teague, Marvin, Horford, Smoove and Woodson’s shortcoming are nonissues, because we’re going to need each one of them to get past the 1st rd and advance. We don’t have to win the Cleveland gm, just push them to the limit. They know those back to back wins against us were gifts, partly from by us, and partly from home cooking by the refs and clock operator. All I can say is, GOOOOO HAWKS!!!!!!

What would you debate about if everyone felt the same way?. Its like the good Dr said, if you don’t like what people are posting just roll on by. Criticizing them for criticizing the players or coach does nothing.

As far as the game went, great win. What I enjoyed most is that they went into the fourth with a lead and continued to play the way they did to get it. They didn’t go away from whats working. They moved the ball and everyone got involved. That’s the type of basketball I want to see from this team.

Last week Orlando, then last night the Lakers. Could Friday night be Cleveland’s turn to get pecked by the birds, and in Cleveland? Huge opportunity for our side to make a playoffs statement (”You really don’t want us to finish in the 4th spot in the East, do you?”) to the odds on favorite to win the East. The Cavs doubtlessly took note of what occurred in Philips last night; they know what happened in Philips last week against the Magic; and they know the Hawks got jobbed in a game against Cleveland a few months back. LeBron and his mates – not to mention the crowd – will be up big time for tomorrow night’s game. What a statement it would be if we were to fly in and rip them a new one (and by a Laker like margin), then return to the bird’s nest (Philips) and soundly thrash Detroit on Saturday. Next on the horizon: men’s pro basketball in Atlanta in June.

Northcyde ,

Thanks for the link to the SLAM article.

I’d say that Woody approaches the game pretty consistently. I don’t know if I’d say he coached all of our blowouts the same. And yeah, I give his performance in this Lakers game more weight than I do in other wins and/or blowouts. Why? Well….blowing out the Lakers is a lot different than blowing out the Nets. So if you ask me, Woody had to do a few things differently.

I wouldn’t scoff too much at people giving the man props, considering the fact that you seem to view those of us who both criticize AND praise him, as being the same as those who only bash him, and never give him credit.

Truth Serum ,

I think if Zaza hadn’t played so well, Horford would have been back in that game much sooner. Fortunately “hamburger Zaza” was fabulous. Oh yeah, don’t think I forgot that nickname you used to give him!

Horford had a good second half, and I love that 18 foot jumper he has developed. He may not be a traditional center, but I notice NO CENTER has been able to stop him when he pulls them outside like that. If only Josh could shoot the jumper as reliably. Speaking of Josh, we won despite a rather below average game from him. His passing skills were on display again.

It wasn’t just our defense near the rim that won the game. It was our defense along the perimeter. We made the Lakers shoot jumpers, and although Kobe hit some, as did Artest and Farmar….they missed them for the most part.

We can talk about defending the rim until we’re blue in the face, but the ultimate defense begins at the point of attack, which is on the ball, at the perimeter . If we can’t stop guards and small forwards from penetrating, we’re in trouble. Why? Because no team can play 2 on 5. No tandem of center and power forward can or should be expected to defend the entire opposing team all game long. When Dwight Howard gets into foul trouble, it’s because his teammates are allowing their guys to get pas them, and Dwight has to leave his man and defend them. The teams that have the most luck against the Magic are teams that make Dwight defend his own man. Because if he’s doing that, then even he can’t defend the rim.

It ain’t magic, just tactics.

northcyde I’ve seen people who criticize Marvin give him credit when he actually performs. The problem is he hasn’t performed well consistently this year. I’ve seen rod from cp give him credit plenty of times but he makes it known that he doesn’t get excited about good games from Marvin because he tends to disappear again which is true.. I think if Marvin performed around the level he did last year it wouldn’t be so much criticism. Even the biggest Marvin supporters have to admit he hasn’t been good this year. A lot of us root for him but it gets to a point where one gets tired of lackluster performances and the excuses made for him. This isn’t his first or second or even third year. Zaza did not have a great offensive game but he was a presence for sure defensively. Horford played only 26 minutes not because of the great offensive explosion of Z-LOL, (excuse me? how many points did he score?) but because we could not allow horford to give free passes to the basket like he does.

secondly if his game is better suited for te12-15 ft away from the basket then he is a power forward and not a center.

NORTHCYDE-I just read your 1:25PM post, and man, you see and processs only what you want to see and what supports your contentions, especially when it comes to your beloved Woody. I’ll let it go at that.

I don’t know where some of you get the idea that Marvin contributed nothing to our win over the Lakers. It seems you have a totally one sided understanding and approach to basketball, snd that’s on the OFF end. If Marvin doesn’t score a bunch of points and get a bunch of REB’s, you don’t feel he contributed anything. Yet, Bibby has scored 2pts, had 2-3 assists and played NO D in 2 or 3gms, and you always bring up these intangibles to justify supporting him.

You seem to be looking for excuses to criticize and demean one player, while at the same time you’re looking for excuses to support another. It seems your interest and involvement is centered more around certain players on the team rather than the overall team.

As a starter, LOdom is averaging 11.9PPG, 11.6 RPG, 4.4APG and his shooting percentage is .456. Marvins DEF held him in check, to the tune of 7PTS on 3-9 shooting(.333), 10REBS, 2ASTS. He made him a nonfactor. His DEF on Odom forced RArtest to become more involved offensively.
