Atlanta Hawks at 76ers: Making Progress

Time for me to be macro again. The Hawks won 47 games last season. Beat Philly tonight and they’ll have 47 victories with 10 to go. Any way you look at it at right now, barring a complete and total collapse down the stretch that’s progress.

“Right now” is the hedge, of course, because it means more if the regular season leads to something better and not as much if it ends up going nowhere. But it’s something for now, and Woody deserves a moment to say he’s glad to see it.

“I am very, very proud,” he said. “I couldn’t be more pleased with a basketball team, considering where we started and I knew we would struggle because we were 18 and 19-year old kids trying to play a man’s game. And we grew. Ownership was patient, they let me and my staff continue to teach a system I believe in and now we see the benefits.”

Woody said matching last season’s victory total isn’t enough. Winning the division would be something to talk about. That’s likely not going to happen so the Hawks will have to put up 50 wins and take the next step in the postseason.

“Our goal was to win 50-plus games and win the division,” Woody said. “We are not outside of the realm of winning the division. Like I’ve been saying, Orlando is playing great we are probably going to have to win out and they are going to have to fall on their face for that to happen. But the goal is to still try to win our division, and in doing that win 50-plus games.”

A reporter actually asked Woody how would he prevent the Hawks from becoming complacent. Shoot, I can’t see how that would be a problem for the Hawks.

For one, the goal should be winning a championship and they haven’t come close to that. They also haven’t shown they are on the same level as the Cavs, Magic and Celtics.

“We haven’t done anything,” Woody said. “Last year we made a positive step based on two years ago when took Celtics to seven. Then we were able to host homecourt last season and win a first-round series. The next step to me is winning the division and getting to the Eastern Conference finals.

“So we haven’t done anything. Orlando, they have done something. Cleveland, they have the best record in the league the last two years. We still have a ways to go, man. We are still trying to learn to win at a high level, and as a coach I’ve got to continue to try to push them.”

– Woody’s message to the team at the shootaround was about finishing games strong. As noted in another nice piece by Ken S. the Hawks are having issues with that. They are “sloppy in that area,” Woody said, and “get so comfortable” with leads late. The Sixers, who are missing South Gwinnett High’s Lou Williams (back), should offer the Hawks a chance to see if they can keep a foe down once they get them there.

Looking fwd to tonight. I hope the confidence & national attention we gained from Wed’s win over ORL carries over into a thorough annihilation of Philly. Isn’t Lou Williams out of this game as well?

Who’s My Grand-Daddy?

Hello Poppy! I bet you didn’t know I could do it like that? (spoken with my Spanish accent)

Here goes: I posted you up last night while you were watching Big-Red -vs- Big Blue and I copied to paste in this page:

“It was so bad with all the Spirit-Belkin In-Fighting.

The funniest part of the whole thing was that picture of BK refusing the Out-Stretched Hand of the ENEMY in the Court-House Lobby! LOL! Pure & Classic Day Time DRAMA! I became a Billy Fan that day!

Its nice to see how far we have come even though the DIVORCE is all but almost forgotten.
Shouldn’t the next Owner sign a Pre-Nuptual or something?

Were LUCKY Joe still wanted to come here? And it’s still not settled? If Joe leaves? That may be the reason.
I wish that David Last-Name?? Guy bought our team, but he was shafted by the Seller.”

Breaking News: today in the Business section in regards to my very comments, and I have no inside track, but the story just broke a few minutes ago at 645pm – so please read the article:

COURT OF APPEALS AWARD $281M to DUPED – BUYER of ATLANTA TEAMS
David McDavid awarded that money in a ruling. TNT Ted Turner ordered to pay the man.

Q: How will the affect the current ownership status of Spirit Group that bought the teams out from under David McDavid (FLA Car Dealership Tycoon), when he clearly had right of first refusal to not buy the teams. Hawks and Thrashers?

Are the teams still for sale, due to the Spirit Group in-fighting and all? How will this affect Joe Johnson desire to re-sign here. Or, as a professional due you just play basketball and not worry about who owns the team?

Blue-Ray & Others
Please free to jump in with an opinion. This is huge!
I can’t believe I was still thinking about all the old stuff last night, A walk down memory lane is all I was doing, trying to re-trace the steps of how we got Joe & Woody here in Atlanta, and why people on here are so eager to see those two leave us. We need the coach and the player!

Two things stand out about Ken S.’s article.

1. Not one of the Hawks mentioned the actual cause of the late-game struggles — that teams have been shifting to the zone in the 4th quarter. That is disappointing. As soon as they find a reliable way to attack the zone, the “late-game struggles” will magically disappear.

2. Al Horford came about as close to calling out his teammates as any Hawk has all season. That gives some ammo to the blog people who complain that the guards hog the ball.

Truth . . . I will give you this much in the Horford defensive debate.

82games.com has another stat on there called iFG% ( inside field goal % ). Unlike the eFG%, which adjusts 3 point shooting into the regular FG%, the iFG% only takes into account shots taken at point blank range around the rim.

When you look at Horford’s opponent iFG% . . . . it’s 61%

That’s pretty bad for Horford, defensively speaking. Guys like Howard, Okur, and even Dalembert, all have iFG% of less than 50%.

Even when you take Zaza into account, whose defensive eFG% is 53% ( much better than I thought ) . . . I believe ( if memory serves me correctly ) his iFG% is also 53% . . 8 percentage points less than Horford.

Now no one in their right mind would say that Zaza is better defensively at center than Horford. But the numbers do who that if an opposing center gets within point blank range at the rim, Zaza may have a better chance at deterrng a shot than Horford.

( Zaza’s “nimbers” may be a little misleading though, seeing that he mainly plays against backup centers. )

*********
So while overall, the numbers show that Horford is a top 5 defensive center, you have a valid point about Horford’s defense around the rim and inability to alter shots. That 61% number is high. I’ll have to look through al the other centers, to see if it is about the norm, or way too high.

In case anyone is wondering, Smoove’s defensive iFG% . . . . is 41%

Honestly, Wdsn deserves a modicum of credit.
He deserves praise for acknowledging their goal of a div. title.
I said earlier, he has done a nice job of keeping the team
both focused & challenging their competitive spirit.
I was most proud of his quote concerning complacency:
[paraphrase] We haven’t done anything yet.
With that being said, this next line led to my bemusement:
[Unfair excerpt]
“let me and my staff continue to teach a system I believe in”
Defensively…Okay, I can go along with that.
Offense…That’s where I became bewildered? System/Philosophy/etc.?
Overall, that was a positive post for me.
Congrats Mr. Woodson.

Jeff Teague is clearly next year’s attraction. The kid’s done for the year, and has been. He can come in, play his token minutes, hit the only shot he takes, grab a rebound, get a steal or an assist…..and he’s done. Next year we’ll actually get to see him play. I assume.

There is entirely too much job security right now on this team for anyone to be feeling real good about team in its current form ever advancing past the second rd . I’m not gonna blame it all on Woody. These guys aren’t playing like they want to win. Or rather, enough of them aren’t playing like they want to win, all at the same time. One will play hard, then another will play hard, but not together.

I have this to say: I think that barring a playoff collapse of disastrous proportions, Woody will get an extension.

On the flip side of that coin, more succesful coaches have been fired after successive winning seasons because they couldn’t get the team past a certain point. Consecutive 50 win seasons (or thereabouts) weren’t enough to keep Flip Saunders employed in Detroit, and that’s a fact.

But that bridge can’t be crossed until we get there…

Question is . . . when JJ tries to take over from a scoring standpoint, will the fans moan and groan because he’s not passing anymore?

Great job by Smoove to close the quarter. And he’s still ballin.

Another clank by Craw . . he’s ice cold.

JJ with only 8 shots. But this is how some of you like him to play.

Northcyde ,

Could care less what anybody else thinks. Joe has passed the ball while his shot isn’t falling, but when your best player and team captain sees how things are going into the 4th quarter, he knows what he needs to do.

I expect him to try and take over, and if he can’t hit the shots, then find ways to get to the line. Failing that, make the passes in between. I’d go to Al first, Josh second, and try to feed Bibby for open looks.

But it’s also on his teammates to do things like set screens and make hard cuts. If they don’t, it won’t matter how Joe plays. We’ll just lose.

Big Ray

March 26th, 2010

Check that…got to Smoove first as he has the hot hand and is hitting his free throws. Go to Al second, or if the opportunity presents itself, as we could use more than one hot hand right about now.

The Hawks won 47 games last year. They added the SMOY Crawford, and they have been the healthiest team all year. And you think Woody is COY? I doubt if he finishes in the top 5.

It would be nice to see the Hawks go on a run.

And that is why Josh HAS to give the ball up sometimes. i dont care how good of a passer he is, he has to know when to give it up on the break like that.

The good thing is, this is as bad as the Hawks can play. Realistically, they probably go 6-4 in those games, maybe 7-3. But they are now effectively 2 games behind Boston, so if they go 7-3 they need Boston to go 5-5. Boston’s remaining schedule looks like this:

Home: San Antonio, Oklahoma City, Houston, Cleveland, Washington, Milwaukee
Away: New York, Chicago, Milwaukee, Toronto

Not an easy home schedule, but three of those road games are gimmes, and they only have to split the home games to beat Atlanta if Atlanta goes 7-3. I could easily see them beating SA, OKC, MIL, and WAS at home and clinching the 3rd seed.

Long story short, this loss puts the Hawks way behind the 8-ball.

VenomSpitter I understand what you’re saying but who is the coach is more important who isn’t the coach! From what I’ve seen Eddie Jordan is a far better coach than Woody, but Eddie’s team is terrible. Eddie’s system takes time to learn, which could be the problem with Philly, but in this league that isn’t an excuse. He’s probably going to be fired. Depending on what happens this summer, I will be for or against Woody staying. As for tonight (I didn’t see the game, I just listened) it sounded like this game fell on the players. A brief thought:

Al has improved.

Josh has improved.

Craw is better than Flip.

JJ remains JJ.

We have been virtually injury free.

The result: we will probably finish with 3 to 5 wins more than last year when we had a LOT of injuries.

Why?

Several reasons come up:

we have now a higher profile: consequently other teams scout us with more attention and exploit Woody’s thin system:

On offense: exploit the switching defense finding the best match ups, rotate for easy threes, look for
offensive rebounds since ATL’s bigs switch to the perimeter.

On defense: play zone down the line, deny entry passes and wait for bad shooting nights by Craw.

A top Euro ball team could beat the Hawks just like the international national teams beat the USA a few times before the Hawks starte to prepare better and form a team with am OFFENSIVE SYSTEM since the Hawks play like those bad USA teams:

ISO offense with an inability to beat zone defense and bad perimeter defense against teams that rotate the ball and look for the open 3.

@ RICKSUND you might be the dumbest individual i’ve seen. Elite means you are in a good enough position from the start of the regular season to win a championship. Obviously the Hawks only have semi-final talent. Wow what you do in the regular season determines whether ur elite or not? Its all about the playoffs and how far you advance and if at all winning a championship. What’s the good of winning 50 games when you don’t go far in the playoffs? Huh try to come up with another “why the Hawks are elite excuse” I’m a hawks fan and its sad to say but they’re not ELITE! Don’t listen to mr genius Rick Sund!

LOL . . . you guys still haven’t figured this team out yet, I see.

This team falls under the same spell that some of you fans do. They simply think that they ( the Hawks )are better than what they really are. And because of that, they feel that they can “turn it on” at any time and win the game. They get away with it sometimes, but they can’t do it enough to warrant believing that.

This is exactly how Denver, Utah, and Phoenix play on the road. Orlando too, to a certain extent.

Now if it’s a game vs a powerhouse team, they know that they’ll have to scrap and claw and fight to win the game. So they play hard and come out focused and win the game or at least make the game highly competitive. Some of the best road games the Hawks have played all year, have come against playoff caliber teams.

And actually, the Lakers are NOTORIOUS for playing down to their opponent. The difference, is that they ( and Cleveland ) CAN turn it on, and eventually win the game. And they can do it, because they can actually shut down their opponent for a 4 minute stretch in a game, and take it over.

Woody stays on this team about defense, because he KNOWS we’re not anywhere near where we need to be. If you play defense and generate turnovers or get consecutive stops, you can create offense.

It is what it is.

Well, that was annoying. We let a team that has no business beating us…well, beat us. Woody keeps saying “This is the NBA, no win is a given.” While this is true, why do we play we did tonight?

A few things that point to us losing:

1)We had 19 turnovers, which is a lot for us. They had 15 with a rookie pg starting and playing 38 minutes.

2) They had 25 assists. We crawled our way to 18 assists. It was embarrassing how much better their ball movement was.

3) We shot 47%, they shot 50%. They have a total of THREE guys on their team who can actually shoot: Jodie Meeks, Louis Williams, and Jason Kapono. In case you were wondering, Iguodala is not a shooter, he’s a corer. Williams didn’t play, Meeks played 3 whole minutes, and Kapono got 14 points off of 5 for 12 shooting. We have no excuse for this, other than really crappy defense.

4)They had 15 steals, we had 5. Seven of their 15 steals were by rookie Jrue Holiday. Again, I’m embarrassed.

5) All else was equal. We couldn’t complain about refs, we went to the line about as much as they did. Rebounding was almost dead even. We made more 3-pointers. Our offense was balanced as far as shot attempts across the board, but it was poorly executed.

We simply failed to play defense worth a damn, and let a 25 win team with a 12-24 home record take us to task. Embarrassing.

Okay, I am now on the bandwagon…FIRE WOODY!!!!! If your team comes out without effort, sit their A$$ on the bench!!! As much energy as Mo is giving us, sit Marvin. When Smooth and Hortford are not boxing out, take them out for ZaZa. That is coaching, making adjustments, etc. Crawford was horrible, put his A$$ on the bench for a hot player!!!! You lose games to a team that has lost 5 straight and down by 9 with under 5 minutes (Tor), lose 3 times to a pathetic NY team 3 teams and a Golden State D-League squad. This loss to the 76′ers put that on the heap of bad losses. If you take just half of the games we really should have won, we would easily be in first. How many times in the history of any sport does your team go without major injuries? This was the Hawks season.

AG

March 26th, 2010

Okay, I say it again, do the math when Marvin takes 10 shots. We are 7-1 in March and for the year have not lost more than 4 games when he took ten shots. Also, the last 5 games that went down to the wire, Joe took the potential game winning shot (under :10 seconds) and made 1 of 6 (we actually got a rebound and kicked it back to him to miss against SA). I don’t understand why we always run iso’s at the end EVERY quarter – except twice in the last three games, they ran a pick for a Bibby three at the top of the key.

Overreacting over every win and loss will simply cause you to have a stroke.

********

The Hawks will probaly come out like world beaters against Indiana, but let them back into the game, before we close it out.

Then on Wednesday, they’ll play like if they lose, they’ll literally die . . and beat the Lakers. I’ll almost guarantee that win.

Then on Friday, they’ll play the same way with the Cavs, and be right there with a shot to win the game in the final 2 minutes.

Then we’ll keep Detroit in the game, due to the back to back, but win

And even in the Charlotte game, the effort will be there, regardless of we win or lose.

But as soon as we fly to Detroit, that’ll be the game to watch, because the Hawks will probably have won 3 or 4 out of 5 games . . . and start believing their press clippings.

*********

And like clockwork, Utah gets destroyed in Indy

And Denver had to literally come from hell and needed a Melo jumper at the buzzer, to beat Toronto

I have an idea. On nights like this when the starters dont have any energy, Crawford is missing and turning the ball over, wouldnt this be a good game to give the bench a chance?

Who knows. Maybe the bench comes in and provides a spark like they did in the Magic game, or maybe the starters will get it together after they’ve spent some time on the bench watching?

But when the starters are struggling, Woody just continues to leave them out there hoping they will start playing better.

The Truth

March 27th, 2010
12:26 am

.Frankly, I’m sick and tired of being sick and tried. Maybe just maybe the Hawks are simply not as good as we think they are. Offensively, maybe we are losing close games because the Difference (Crawford) is not making much of a difference lately. With a 4-13 shooting performance by him, why are we just talking about Marvin? His poor shooting percentage has been his pattern as of late. Still Mr. invisible Marvin doesn’t get a pass either, but I’m just saying. Is this glass half empty or half full? Yes Josh had a 20 pts night, but what about the 6 turn-over(s) that translated into perhaps 12 give-away points? If you subtract that from his offense, he really had an 8 points game. Yes Al Horford had his typical double-double game, but when the opponents are scoring most of their points in the paint, he certainly can’t be too proud of that either.

Woody talks about how the Hawks are playing for something while the lottery teams are not. Well Woody, apparently the 76ers did not get that memo. The 76ers out-worked in the paint all night. The Hawks made this team look like a world-beater playoff team. While, the Hawks played like they just wanted the season to be over quickly sleep-walking in the first half. Perhaps they are just preoccupied with the upcoming summer vacation and apparently unfocused.

Folks don’t want to blame Woody for any parts of this loss but when a team plays uninspired and flat, that points to a lack of preparation and focus. The players’ jobs are to execute but apparently they are not listening or paying any attention to Woody. This is not the kind of coaching performance you want to display if you are auditioning for a new contract.

As I recall, it was JJ that missed the potential game-winner against the Magic, and Josh who dunked it home. As I recall, it was JJ who shot 3-8 going into the 4th quarter tonight, and Al Horford who was 5-10 going into the same quarter.

While I agree that he is the team’s best player, these other guys are also able to SHARE the load. Nobody is asking them to take over.

The Truth ,

Crawford and Bibby have something in common: both are bad enough on defense, that when their offense isn’t clicking, they’re doing more hurt than help. The switch defense is designed to hide that (something that came out of Woody’s own mouth), but it doesn’t always work.

I can only echo Astro Joe and say that the sum of this team is greater than it’s parts…

Josh did play badly, but came on stronger at the end. Unfortunately, we had begun to ignore Horford by that time (typical), we still weren’t playing good defense ANYWHERE on the court, and not enough other people were generating enough offense.

What is this crap about not firing Woodsen because of his regular season record? Your success in the playoffs is determined in great part by seeding. That comes from the regular season record. One of the reasons the Cavs have the besat record is their record against sub-500 teams. We suck at this. That is coaching! We are at the same place as last year, 4th. To play possibly the Bucs.
