Atlanta Hawks: On Magic Tricks and Josh’s Jumpers

Nice write-up by Ken S. today on the Hawks’ issues stopping Dwight Howard and the Magic. Also a compelling counterpoint at Hoopinion (thanks to commenter GMAN013 for pointing it out) stating that the Hawks’ problems against the Magic have “less to do with defensive game plans than Atlanta’s complete and utter inability to score against the Magic.”

Josh Smith shooting from where he's most effective. (Curtis Compton, ccompton@ajc.com)

Josh Smith shooting from where he's most effective. (Curtis Compton, ccompton@ajc.com)

But instead of adding my two cents to those takes, I’m going back to something I wrote about on Monday and have been trying to get my head around since. Why does Smoove continue to take jump shots when he’s only making them at a 37 percent clip at 28.3 effective field-goal percentage? Emailer Aaron, citing Hoopdata.com, broke it down even further: “Josh Smith is shooting 28.5% (28% after the Bucks game) on jumpshots in the 16-23 feet range. His career 3 pt% is 26.6%, meaning the decision to take long 2pt jumpshots over 3pt shots has cost the Hawks 21 points this season.”

Clearly Josh is just not good at shooting jumpers. Apparently everyone but Josh can see that he should stop taking them. How can he say he doesn’t notice when fans groan as soon as he catches the ball on the perimeter and looks at the basket. Heck, they dang near yell at him when he starts his windup. Why would he think “it will get better” when it’s not? How can he say he takes jumpers because they are available when the reason they are available is because opponents want him to shoot them? They get a double bonus because he’s very likely to miss and he’s nowhere near the rim for the rebound.

Then again, how can I be asking all these questions about a guy who’s been the most consistent Hawks performer all season? (Though I noticed Al lately has overtaken Josh to lead the Hawks in both on-court, off-court influence and adjusted plus-minus.) Honestly, I felt kind of jerky asking Josh why he takes jumpers. It felt like nitpicking at what might be the only consistent, glaring negative in his game this season. But because it’s so glaring and consistent I had to find out his thinking on the subject but instead of clearing things up it only confused me more.

Woody doesn’t really harp on the issue when I ask him about it. At first Smoove said Woody tells him to drive to the basket “all the time” but then added he doesn’t get on him too much “because he knows I play hard at both ends.” And I understand that but it’s got to be hard watching plays like that 20-footer he missed when the Hawks trailed San Antonio 101-97 the other night. Are decisions like that going to cost the Hawks in close playoff games?

I don’t understand why Josh keeps shooting jumpers but maybe it’s as simple as the more everyone thinks he can’t the more he thinks he can.

“I’m a confident player,” he said. “I believe in myself, not what somebody else believes in me.”

At this point, the Hawks might just need to hope Josh watches film again this summer and decides on his own he needs to quit taking those long jump shots.

– Ken S. has the game tonight.

As the most athletic guy on the team, Josh can get to the rim when ever he chooses….he just has to choose. If he would jsut drive and kick in those situations, Jamal, JJ, and Bibby would have wide open shots.

Josh should be instructed by his (lame duck coach) mike woodsen to STOP taking 20 and 30 foot jump shots and start helping his team by driving to the basket and stuffing home the basketball. Dominique Wilkins could even even coach him on this. Josh is wasting his enormous talents by trying to win the 3pt contest each night constantly hoisting 3s. Josh should drive to the basket at about 90 miles an hour and go down the line as though it is vacant and leap through the air like superman and stuff the ball down the pipe. We need that from Josh in order for the hawks to be successful.

Josh wants to prove he can hit the jumper to expand his game and access to the bucket. I can see that, but he has to be mature enough to realize a short jumper from just outside the paint is worth just as many as those a few inches inside the stripe. He couldn’t make them last year, he can’t make them this year.

Problem isn’t the jumper, it’s how far out he takes them. Why doesn’t Horford crank just inside the line 3’s? Because he can’t make them. That’s why he focusses just outside the paint…where he’s very effective.

Too bad Josh is too selfish and immature to see that. Hopefully he’ll have an epiphany this summer. When he does – Hello ALL STAR!

We’re working on him one season at a time. Look at his career stats; starting in 2006-2007 he took 152 3 pointers, then 99, 87, and this season 7 so far (with zero made, interestingly enough). I’ll take progress where and when we can given the level of the rest of his game.

Our lack of scoring against the Magic is a confidence issue. It’s spurred by not stopping them on D or keeping them off the boards. It’s all an aggression issue. They need to bring it tonight!

Keep taking those Jumpers JOSH!!!

Josh has to take and hit those shots if we are going to advance in the playoffs. He is our best defender and will be on the floor in the 4Th and teams are going to leave him open…if he drive closer they are going to foul him.(3 of 10 jump shots or 6 of 10 from the line). In the 4Th we are playing 4 on 5 because the don’t guard Josh on offense..HE HAS TO MAKE THEM PAY!!!

The Hawks problem vs. ORL is our inability to attack their D & specifically Bizzaro a.k.a. Dwight Howard. He usually doesn’t get into foul trouble & doesn’t have to work on D b/c Al is shooting 15 ft jumpers. We’ll win if we take the action to ORL, but if we stay on the perimeter we will most certainly lose.

I think the issue with Josh’s jumper is overstated. He attacks the rim much more consistently now than he ever has & he doesn’t shoot 3’s. Besides if Woody had a problem with Josh taking 3’s, take him out of the game…but we all have to recognize that there will be moments when Josh is open on the perimeter & has to take that shot. He can’t drive to the basket every single time.

MC . . . you’re the only AJC sportswriter that I’ve seen that has EVER actively criticized Josh Smith. The jumpers ( especially the early in the shot clock jumpers ) are definitely a part of his game that he should abandon. Now, if there’s less than 5 seconds on the shot clock, he has to shoot the shot. If not, he should ALWAYS drive and look to score or pass to a shooter.

As I say with Josh Smith, all anybody has to do ( including him ), is to look at his Hotspots data on nba.com

http://www.nba.com/hotspots

Everything on the court is blue ( blue = bad shooting ), except the area around the rim. He FINALLY turned the area near the right elbow to gray, meaning that if he’s going to remotely hit a jumper, it’s going to be from that area.

Fundamentals: Josh needs to prove he can hit that jumper after he has PRACTICED during the summer and the offseason by shooting maybe 10000 per day DURING THE OFFSEASON and not prior to practice. After he has gone through about 6 months of that, now he will be polished and accurate enough to try them in real games. Until then he is wasting his time because he will never hit them in real live games.

Don’t let northcyde sway your opinion. The guy thinks we’re an elite team and that we can make it past the ECF.

He thinks that we match up well vs. the elite teams and that we have a shot of beating them. Orlando OWNS us in every facet of the game — Horford has made it clear he hates playing defense and guarding the big man — watch how he played vs. Duncan for more information — no, his stat line doesn’t tell you !@#$. He had no idea how to play the P&R and the idiot Woodson ran TWO plays where Horford iso’ed on Duncan — are you serious?

And Philips Arena is hardly a home advantage. We are just a good home team now, as is evident by our losses to Miami, twice to the Knicks, OKC, and our pathetic performance in the playoffs vs. Cleveland last year

Done in 2nd round in 4 or 5

************

Now why tell a boldface lie about me sir?

LOL . . I KNOW the Hawks aren’t elite, and have said so on numerous occasions. It’s you guys who think that every game that we’ve blown, should’ve been a game that we win . . . but don’t take into account the games that we’ve come from behind to win, in that same equation.

The Hawks are who I thought they would exactly be . . . a great home team and a schizophrenic ( but better than last year ) road team. That’s why I’ve been able to enjoy this season, while 80% of the board have been stressed out all year.

All I say is that if we DO get to the EC Finals, all of you who have been dogging the Hawks, the coaches, and the players the entire year . . . don’t do a 180 degree turn, and act like you had faith in them from Day 1.

And for those of you who wish the Hawks go into a freefall, just so that the coach can get fired. LOL . . do yourself a favor and root for another team.

This team is much more mentally tough than the fan base. And so is the coach.

The best formula for beating the magic is to #1) DOUBLE TEAM DWIGHT HOWARD and #2) come up to the 3pt line to meet the 3pt shooters there with a hand in their face. Dont just let them have target practice out there unobstructed. The orlando shooters will shoot for a low percentage and dwight will be held to a reasonable number of points: maybe 15 pts and 12 rebounds. The Hawks should end up with a “W” after all is said and done.

Just wanted to respond to a comment Rod made on that last blog. You made a good point when you mentioned Dwight Howard’s ability to defend in the post. But, that shouldn’t mean we phase Horford out of the offense. Why is that teams like Miami can give Orlando trouble, but we can’t even show that we belong on the same court? It’s because our BIGS are non-existent when we play Orlando. We can’t get easy buckets (points in the paint). Regardless of how Horford gets his touches, either on the block or in the pick and pop game, he needs to show up tonight. Horford hasn’t shown up to any of the games against Orlando. I don’t know if that has to do with his responsibilites defending Howard on the other end, but he needs to be involved in the offense.

And we only have 3 shots at beating Orlando

1) we get Dwight in foul trouble, limiting his time on the court

2) they have a horrible shooting night from 3

3) our star players ( JJ, Crawford, and Smoove ), play at an extremely high level

We need at least one of those things to happen, in order to beat them .. . maybe 2 of those things.

Josh has the audacity to think that at 6′9″ and playing PF, he can be among the team’s top 3 in assists. He has the audacity to believe that at 6′9″ and playing PF, that he could be among the team’s leaders in steals. He has the audacity to believe that at 6′9″, he can be among the league leaders in blocked shots.

When a player has that much audacity, you will get some “inappropriate behavior”. He’s likely one of the league’s best fast-break finishers, yet he routinely attempts to run a fast break (often unsuccessfully). He has great quickness and leaping ability in the post yet he wants to shoot from distance (,30% success rate).

It took me a few years to appreciate the “Josh coin”. One side shines the other, well, one side shines. The only thing that still bothers me is his free throw shooting… he used to be around 70%+, now he has eased into something about 10% worse. I don’t care how audacious the young man is, hit your freakin’ free throws.

MC. . . every blog I’ve seen on Smoove from an AJC writer, gives him a pass on this area. They assume like some of the fans that he’d eventually get better shooting the long jumper. In fact, he may have gotten worse.

Smoove is the hometown dude. So he’s going to get the benefit of the doubt because everyone wants him to succeed. I’m sure people are in his ear all the time telling him how great he could be, if he hit that jumper. What they should be telling him, is to attack the basket as much as possible, or be a good offensive rebounder ( ala what Shawn Marion used to be ), and get his points like that.

I’d seriously let Dwight try and go for 50 tonight. Just let him get his. STAY ON THE SHOOTERS!

When we’re trying to mix and match and do both, we get both Dwight and the shooters going. It’s obvious that Dwight’s gonna get his one way or the other. I think you limit the 3-point looks and force them to dump the ball down low.

I’ll also say this, many here talk about how the league has picked up on how the Hawks falter in the 4th quarter, so opponents know the game is never over. Well, the league also knows that in a tight game in the 4th quarter, the Magic stop dumping the ball down to big Dwight. The guys on TNT gripe about this non-stop. So, if we can keep this thing tight going down into the 4th, it’s a possibility you’ll see Orlando play themselves right out of what they should be doing. Who knows? It’s a possibility.

I’m catch up with the blog after the game. UPPER LEVEL SEATS BI**CHES!

Ree Roe: You are correct. In the PAST we have doubled Howard with horrible results, but remember, THAT WAS THE PAST. As someone pointed out earlier, AL Horford can and will neutralize Dwight Howard by playing like a monster against Howard tonight. If “Big” Al goes for 30 points and 22 rebounds AND gets Howard into foul trouble, Howards numbers will be irrelevant and the Hawks should win easily. As far the 3pt shooters getting theirs; they wont if the Hawks step up and defend them at the 3pt line. If the Hawks allow the magic to shoot open 3pts the magic will make the hawks pay because orlando will make 3s ALL NIGHT LONG. If the Hawks step up and meet the magic shooters at the line with a hand in their face, forcing them to alter their shots, then those magic shooters will miss a large percenage of those shots and the hawks should walk away victorious.

I agree with Venom pitter. Smith should only be taking midrange jumpers. What I don’t understand is late in the 4th quarter why is Smith always the guy Joe Johnson has to kick it out to when Johnson drives to the lane? This happened at end of regualation Friday night against the Bobcats, and again Monday versus the Bucks. Even though Marvin is stuggling with his jumper, I would rather see him take that shot over Smith anytime. Smith shouldn’t even be on the perimeter rather in the paint ready to crash the boards in that situation.

Josh is tough to handle in the paint, and he is also a good passer. Why doesn’t he drive the ball, or pass it (unless there is less than 5 seconds on the clock)?

Woody has to take part of the blame too, because he needs to be on Josh about the jump shots. I dont care how hard he plays. If Al was taking 3s, and shooting .30%, would Woody not get on him over and over?

Popovich basically forbid Tony Parker from taking 3s during his early years in San Antonio, because TP did not have the range, and he is a much better player when he drives or passes. Same with Josh. Stay on him Woody.

northcyde,

Hawks need to make their FT too. In 3 games against the Magic, we are 33-52 (.63%) from the FT line. Thats a lot of (free) points left on the court. And we are 18-57 (.315%) on 3s. We need to drive, and not settle for so many 3s.

Wabe,

One of the things that allows other teams to beat the Magic is because they get penetration from their guards. We get nothing from our PG, and JJ does not initiate contact, so Crawford would be our best bet at penetration.

But against the Magic, Crawford is 4-14, 6-17, and 4-13. A combined 14-44 (.32%). That will not get it done Crawford. We need more out of you tonight.

From the last blog……

Wabe,

Not saying we should phase Horford out, but obviously Horford has problems scoring over Howard in the post. He needs to take advantage of the pick and pop jumper. Going in the post will not work for him against Howard on a consistent basis.

Ken Strickland,

Miami, and other teams are successful going in the post against Howard because the have players who have polished post moves (O’Neal) in the paint. Horford has not developed that part of his game yet. They also have guys who are bigger or just as big as Howard. Al is shorter and weighs a lot less. If you ever played any organized ball, you would understand that that is not a good matchup for Horford in the post offensively or defensively. Horford might be successful down there if he had a polished post game like Hakeem, but he does not have that yet. His best bet will be to pick and pop. Howard is a much bigger stronger and longer Josh Smith on the defensive end. NBA is about exploting bad matchups, not trying to post the best defensive center in the league with a guy who has no post moves. Take advantage of what you are good at, don’t try to disprove something that is proven.

Also if “THE BOSS” plays like he did in the second half of the San Antonio game D.Howard will have his hands full on both ends of the court. And can someone explain to me why JSmoove cant get to the rim against Rashard Lewis, is he that good of a defender? If JSmoove plays “his” game tonight we should be fine. Finally i would like to say to any of the hawks players that are reading this blog: Please don’t be afraid to cause a ruckus tonight period. Get in their face, throw some elbows if you have to. That way even if you lose they will realize they are going to have to fight in the playoffs. GO HAWKS!!!

I’d rather Josh shoot 20 footers than free throws. At least I can rationalize that a lot of NBA big men can’t make 20 footers. But most everyone makes at least 70% of free throws. That being said, we wouldn’t have won 20 games this season without Josh. We got to take the bad with the wonderful.
Go Josh! Go Hawks! Wipe the smirks off the Magic tonight!

@ Rod

Right on the money about Horford’s post up game. It’s simply not polished enough to be effective against Howard. I want to see if Al does what he said he’s going to do in that AJC article yesterday. He said that he was going to go at Howard a little faster wen he got the ball in the post. I want to see if he does that, to see if he can pick up a cheap foul or two on Dwight.

@ O’Brien

You’re right on the money too. Those missed FTs, coupled with both Marvin and Crawford now showng up as outside shooters, have killed us against Orlando.

A lot of this vs Orlando simply has to do with us not executing . . . not because Orlando is vastly superior. I don’t know why our jumpshooting goes extra cold vs the Magic, but it does.

- The Thanksgivng night game, we play an excellent 1st half, only to go ice cold in the 2nd half, only scoring 25 points.

- The 1st January game, our starters play them even, but their 2nd team completely outplays our bench and then our starters, to blow that game open.

- The 2nd January game, we play them virtually even for a half, then Dwight turns into Superman and takes the game over. Meanwhile, just like in the Thanksgiving game, no one can make a shot for a 6 minute stretch, which allows them to balloon the lead to double digits, and not look back.

People may not like this, but JJ may very well have to take 25 shots again tonight, just to keep us going offensively. If our frontcourt sows any signs of struggling, he and Crawford have to look to take the game over, to keep the game close.

i think a lot of peoples perception of Josh is outdated…

truthfully i dont see the “Rasheed Wallace” in him, he could’ve potentially gone that route but has chosen otherwise. he’s simply Josh Smith. i value the progression w/ in his game. he has illustrated that he is not just an athlete, but a skilled player. you dont bottle his talent up and ask him to due what others do because that creates ceilings for his potential. im guilty of wanting him to be more of a Gerald Wallace but Josh is not of that cloth. Josh can be elite. even his decision making has gotten better and is a pass first player who always looks for his teammates versus the forced attempt. i think a lot of the forced jumpers stem from frustration due to a lack of touches. he forced a jumper late against the Bucks simply b/c he didnt get the ball when he asked for it in the post a possession before. if we had a system that did not promote selfish play and more ball sharing and player involvement you would probably would see a lot less of the jumpers from Josh. rather if its by choice or due to a forced situation. Josh shooting or having to shoot long jumpers support why i often say that by (design) our players arent put in positions to succeed or play to their strengths. however, i do credit Woodson for giving Josh range to grow. id like to see Josh continue to work on his shot, shoot it with confidence, and never limit his game just to play w/ in himself.

he cant simply drive the ball each time he touches it…

Does anyone know how many attempts he takes per game outside of the paint? I think the number is low, but I have to admit I do not know that for sure. I believe he would say that he is only shooting from outside when his man is sitting in the paint waiting for him or doubling down on Joe. He is trying to set up his inside game.
Dominique was not a great shooter until about year three. I remember cringing as hoisted up the threes. He really worked during the offseasons. Josh is a much better player this year than in previous years.Maybe he will develop the jumper during this offseason. He is still young.

O'Brien

northcyde,

And thats the problem for the Hawks. We need Crawford to have a big game to help JJ out, but for some reason, he has struggled against the Magic.

If we give Al a few chances against Howard, and he misses or gets blocked, and Josh is not able to help him out either, then I am ok with JJ taking 25 shots (assuming he’s shooting a good percentage). Plus that might open things up for Al and Josh a little bit.

I dont care how we win this game, I just want to win and beat the Magic.

Big Ray

March 24th, 2010

I hate to see Josh Smith take a jumper and miss it. But it happens.

I think Josh should take less jumpers in games, but I cannot advocate him abandoning the jumpshot altogether. He needs to work like a demon on it over the summer, then come back and start hitting them in games.

It’s all well and good for him to hit jumpers during shootarounds. D-leaguers can do that. Hitting them in scrimmages/practices and then hitting them in games is a different story.

I don’t hear anybody complaining about Horford developing his jumpshot and shooting it, and he’s the center. One day, Josh won’t be the most athletic player on the floor. One day, he won’t be able to run past or jump over everybody. One day he’ll come up against a team (wait until the playoffs) that will take away the driving lanes. What then? Oh wait, I forgot, we have guards for those shots, and they are guaranteed to be open every single time. And we shouldn’t be disappointed when they miss, even if other guys are open and they’re trying to shoot over a double team.

I want to see Josh Smith grow and expand his game. Not at the cost of the team, that’s not what I’m saying. I repeat again: he needs to take far fewer jump shots in games, and work on that jumper in the offseason. Never shoot a jumpshot again in his life? NONSENSE. Only if you are an unstoppable force in the post or driving to the hoop. And guess what? 15ppg does not indicate an unstoppable force. If it does, then you’ve been swimming in all those nicky neat little stat sites for way too long.

One more thing. Why in the world do people yap all day about Josh needing to drive to the hole every single time he gets the ball……only to turn around and say he can’t dribble? Make up your damn minds!

I suggested trading Evans for a more legit backup SF, because Mo is small. But he has been playing great tonight.

And why bring Bibby back in the game when our defense was playing well with Teague in the game?

I can understand that. I’ve felt that Mo is a backup SG who can play SF in a pinch. I’m talking about people who said he was just plain awful. I don’t expect them to speak up about it now. ;)

Having said that, we could still use a legit backup SF, but we’ll have to wait for next season on that one.

The games not over, but I’m proud of the heart we showed to battle back & take the lead at half. I know few of us thought we’d even have a shot at the lead after we were down 15-2 late in the first. We gotta stay aggressive and attack them guys.

Big Ray

March 24th, 2010
8:19 pm

Okay, well we’ve had a lead over these guys before, so I’ll reserve my barely-contained excitement for the second half, where Orlando will no doubt try to come out and punch is dead in the mouth.

In the meantime, here’s the difference in the game for me:

1) Our bench has performed well. Those guys came in with major energy, played some defense, hit some shots. Mo Evans and Jamal Crawford combine for 17 points on 50% shooting from both the field and from 3 point range.

2) We didn’t let their bench torch us, like we’ve done in the past. Reddick, JWill, and Gortat? Non-factors.

3) They have the advantage on the boards, but we have half as many turnovers as they do.

4) Both teams are shooting low percentages. However, the second quarter did it for us. We held them to 20 points, while we scored 30.

MC—I disagree, although I can’t argue that Josh is making them at a decent enough clip, because below 30% is bad (and it could hurt us in games—but there are so many other things that hurt the Hawks more, that yeah i think it’s nitpicking).

Besides, I WANT JSmoove to be that all @ player like KG, or Tim Duncan. Those guys play defense & can shoot facing the hoop. I think in the day & age of all this specialization, why try to put unique talents like JSmoove into a box and tell him what he can’t do.

The clear key for victory tonight is not feeding Horford in the paint as much as its turn horford loose on the defensive end to stop the Magic and force them off the block and onto the perimeter turning them in to a jump shooting team.

If Horford can block about 4 shots, alter others and put some people on the seat of their pants we will blow out the magic. We need Horford to step up and handle the center spot more than we need his few points. DEFENSE WINS GAMES.!

And there’s the trap.

Orlando has more guys who are capable of drawing fouls (penetration is the key).

Atlanta is stuck with Bibby on defense for the simple fact that he has been hitting shots on offense.

Both teams are in the penalty.

Josh is out with 5 fouls, and Horford has 4.

Why did Woody not give the bench there burn together as a unit that they earned ? Mo,JT0,Craw,Zaza shouldve started the 4th together . Instead he goes back with the starters and they blow it . Crawford doesnt find a rhythm because Josh and Joe are out there jacking up shots doing a time where Crawford is primarily the first option so he never find a rhythm and since Joe never had it going this game to begin with we end up in this position down the stretch .

It doesnt make any sense what he is doing all this tells the bench is that regardless of what we do Woody wont play us in the second half even when the starters are playing like crap.

I hope now you guys are seeing that this team is mentally tough. They could’ve easily rolled over and died in that 1st quarter ( like a couple of fans on this board were doing ). But they stayed focus, and was able to keep themselves in position to win the game.

Mental toughness.

As for Smoove . . lol . . that’s the Shawn Kemp version of Smoove that I love to see. If that’s not the #1 play on SportsCenter, they should just quit doing the top 10.

5 playoff-like intensity games in a row, all coming down to the final play. This is the Hawks version of March Madness.

Now next week is the big challenge. Can we take a game from the East and West favorites to play for the NBA title.

Somebody needs to hurry up and youtube the final play, starting with Carter’s 3 ( which shows why the Magic got him ), so I can watch Smoove Kemp jam it home about 15 times in a row.

I just got back from the game. Holy f-cking sh-t. That was the best finish I have ever seen, in person or in TV. I sat in the lower level for the first time ever and I couldn’t have picked a better game to do so. That arena was going crazy.

I’d like to give props to someone who takes a lot of sh-t from all of us, including me. Mike Woodson coached an incredible game today. No two ways about it. When the Hawks’ offense bogged down, he put Bibby back in to settle it down and run the show. He made it a point to attack Vince Carter and Rashard Lewis in the post with Josh today, knowing that neither one could guard him.

And most importantly of all, he finally figured out how to defend the Magic. Dwight Howard dominated on the boards, but none of the Magic shooters ever got into a rhythm, because the Hawks made it a point of emphasis to deny them any easy looks. This is the key to beating them. Let Dwight get his — send him to the line if you have to — but shut down the shooters at all costs. It’s not even like the Hawks completely abandoned the double team; they doubled Howard quite often in this game, but they always made it a point to rotate to the shooters, even if it meant leaving Howard before he passed the ball.

The only complaint I have is that somehow our beloved fan base found a way to not sell out this game. There were a ton of empty seats in the upper level, and even the lower level wasn’t entirely full. That was really disappointing. It brings me back to the point I made on Schultz’s article the other day — move the 7 PM games to 7:30 or 8 and attendance will go up.

The one huge, glaring flaw the Hawks still have that Woody has to find a way to fix is the continued offensive struggles against the zone defense. The Magic erased the Hawks’ 10 point lead because they switched to a zone, and as soon as they went back to man-to-man the Hawks’ offense started working again. This is something they absolutely have to get fixed. But that aside, tonight for the first time Woody looked like a coach that can win a championship.

Najeh,

We were close to 10 minutes without a basket in the 4th… not championship material.

Fortunately Josh hit his 1 for 4 jump shot average at the right time and then saved our asses.

I am quite surprised that Carter hit that clutch shot, it seems that he is improving and becoming more reliable with the age.

However, Woody’s beloved switching D gave 2 easy looks to Carter with Al switching to him on ORL’s last two possessions.

Again, not championship material.

In our defense:

The refs were plain awful again, bailing out Howard with bad calls against us and non calls benefiting him (elbow to Marvin’s face, for instance).

Also, on the last play, Carter pushes JJ on the hip and that should have been a foul called against ORL but the refs were not going to call it.

Very big win.. My only complaint is how our offense went stagnant again in the 4th quarter. We really have to fix this in time for the playoffs. And it might be time to start Mo and let Marvin come off the bench. We don’t have many games left so why not try it now and see how it works. If it goes well stick with it. If not then move Marvin back into his spot. I doubt we do it but I don’t think it could hurt.

I like that 20 mins scenario for BIBBY at key moments. That’s what great coaches can do.
Woody like Josh both started as rooks & clashed in the beginning. People need to remember this is Woody’s 1st job. Shouldn’t Woody get the benefit of a learnig curve?

Woody has gotten better each year … Along with Josh. Horford came as a Grown Azz Man. NBA Ready & 4 Years of coaching under Donnavan. Look at Joakim Noah & David Lee. The GATORS were CHAMPS because of these 3 players…& They are ALL great NBA players.

My Point is that all their teams are glad they drafted these guys & they are greayt fits on all their teams.
The Hawks would have never got Horford … IF… We didn’t suck the year prior!
Again, Billy Knight deserves credit for bringing Joe some HELP…with Horford &
Josh & ZaZa & Marvin & Mo.

I LOVE MY TEAM!
We need a deeper bench to back up the afore-mentioned players.

drmaryb, I’m not in the FIRE WOODSON club yet, but he does need to get a clue (or an offensive strategist) regarding how to construct an offensive attack when we are in a slump. I understand isolation, but five players are on the court because they are all supposed to be a threat to put the ball in the basket. Woodson doesn’t coach like that is a reality. He preaches team ball but late he places ALL the scoring responsibilities in one or two hands. A coach simply does not do that – coaches set up plays to make scoring a basket easier. And usually have an assortment of them to make sure the attack is not predictable.

In the meantime, you should all take a look at what my favourite NBA analyst (Charley Rosen) has to say about the Hawks and last night’s game:

http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/story/hawks%27-offense-won%27t-cut-it-in-playoffs

FYI this guy has always said that Woody was making a very good job with wat he was given and has been pointing in the past out two major flaws in our roster: Josh’z immaturity ad Bibby’ decaying game.

More, this guy has no hidden agenda – like ESPN guys – and is “defense first” guy.

O'Brien

March 25th, 2010

Great win for Woody and the Hawks. It wasn’t pretty, but overall, our defense was good, we did a good job guarding Howard, and we made enough plays to win, showing some mental toughness. Great job guys.

I liked the substitutions Woody made, and the combination of guys he was using. One of his better coaching jobs so far.

Vava,

Although Carter fouled JJ on that last shot, if you look at the replay, it looks like JJ took 3 steps to get that shot off, so the refs could have called a travel too. However, LeBron and the other stars get away with steps all the time, so it was good to see JJ get the benefit of the doubt with the game on the line.

Charley Rosen lays into the Hawks in his article you posted, but I agreed with 2 of his points.

“Their strategy of switching every screen and roll led to too many mismatches (of which the Magic failed to take full advantage)”;

“As the weak sisters are weeded out of the playoff picture, the defenses of the surviving teams get sharper and smarter with each succeeding round and iso-oriented offenses become increasingly ineffective”.

But all things considered, Hawks have to be pleased with this win. Regardless of how it looked, we needed this win bad.

Now I see why Rod does not say much when Marvin has a good game. Because chances are, he will disappear again for the next 5. How can one guy with so much talent and potential be so inconsistent?

SWAT Native

I wish Dwight Howard, the king and Wade could all play for Boston. That way the NBA refs would have an easier time making bad calls.

Dwight Howard is a cry baby who expects to get fouls called for him when someone’s nose hits his elbow.

The NBA has little credibility.

OB,

Charley Rosen is 95% of the times spot on and regrettably he is right again.

Our offense is non existent since we basically resort to playground bball: each player receaves a number of ISO oportunities and that’s it.

To play a zone involves strategy and orchestrated movements to blitz it.

For instance, if we placed Josh at the free throw line (and not close to the 3point line) with the rock in his hands and then we had two cutters (Craw and JJ) getting some space out off elbow picks set by Al and Marvin we would be a lot more effective.

Since we do not have a penetrating PG, I think this would be our best option to score against the zone.

Apart from the passing which Josh could bring from that position, he would be close enough to make a few jump shots (he is acceptable within 15 feet) and to drive and pop from closer (10-12 feet).

ILL-logical

March 25th, 2010
9:03 am

At this point, the Hawks might just need to hope Josh watches film again this summer and decides on his own he needs to quit taking those long jump shots.

@MC: Not good ,as in not good journalism( see Fox News analysis posted above) and not good nonesense.

On the second point, commen sense would tell you that you cannot improve on a task if you don’t practice it.As several commentaors remarked on the various networks remarked(see ,for instance,D. Scott@NBATV), regarding the issue,The EXPERTS opinions were that if he is open he HAS to take the shot.

As it relates to the Fox analysis, the lack of any offensive scheme is a factor as well.IMHO, if there was a scheme that put players other than the usual suspects in a position to do what they do best on a regular and consistent basis the jump shooting issue would be less of a concern.

Which brings me to my main concern. Call me cynical, but your comments sound very much like “someone” said you are getting on me about iso, why aren’t you getting on x about his jump shot.

The primary challenges for the Hawks going forward have very little to do with Josh’s jump shooting ability per se, especially if you listen to to what the national media has been harping on ever since the team has been more exposed (pun intended) during their ascent into the upper echelons of the NBA.And the person directly responsible for addressing those concerns keeps playing games with the local media. Don’t be an enabler!

GREAT WIN!!!!!

vava74 the article by Rosen seems right on point. I think the lack of post up players with several moves, will make it very difficult to beat either Cleveland or Orlando in a seven game series. Cleveland is playing great now and Orlando was playing great until last night. But the HAWKS shold feel really good about where they are right now. They’ve played Cleveland tough and they’ve finally found away to play against Orlando. Their starting to win close games, which I think is the most important factor in the playoffs. Orlando and Cleveland will be feeling all the pressure, because of the money they’ve spent and the expectations. Also, we’re still not playing as well as we can. If JJ and Crawford shoot at their normal percentages last night, I think the HAWKS win even if Orlando is shooting better.

Credit the defense for last night’s win. Holding the Magic to 84 points is a feat in itself. Considering how well the Magic have been playing and the way we lost to the surging Bucks that last game just makes it all the more better.

I’ll ask this, Ryan Anderson got NO PT in last night’s game. I’m a bit surprised by this considering Rashard only had 6 points/5 boards in about 40 minutes. Anderson’s killed the Hawks in games past, but he didn’t even see the floor last night. Pretty crazy.

Charley Rosen says what all of us already know, that the Hawks don’t run plays and are inconsistent offensively as a result. He usually does a good job observing things, but he has always been terrible at translating his observations into meaningful conclusions that are not just the doom-and-gloom scenario. Case in point, the guy said in 2002 that LeBron James would never be more than an average NBA player, even though common sense dictated otherwise.

Yesterday’s game proved that the Hawks are capable of playing a competitive series with Orlando. For Rosen to imply that the Hawks won simply because the Magic didn’t take advantage of mismatches is intellectually dishonest. The Hawks won because they played terrific defense — yes, even with the switching — and they created enough perimeter and transition buckets to win. I don’t think they will necessarily win a series with Orlando, but they are capable of stretching it to 7 games like they did with Boston in 2007 if they use the strategy they used yesterday. In any case, they are a lot closer to Orlando’s level than they are to Milwaukee, which is not what Rosen would have you believe.

You think Josh is the only player who misses jump shots; apparently you are just watching him. he only makes a few per game while others make far more and misses just as many. Josh contributes far more than any other. He gets us to the lead and when he sits on the bench to rest, we lose the lead. We do better when he is on the floor. As for the jump shots; JJ bounces the ball until the last few seconds and passes it to Josh who has no other choice but to shoot. The question is what is wrong with JJ? Why doesn’t he pass the ball to someone else. Sometime I think he wants out of Atlanta.

The way that Josh Smith shoots jump shots, it appears when he is missing them in games, that he is just practicing jump shooting for the first time. Josh always seems to hit the front of the rim and bounce short. However, to Josh’s credit, he made a BIG jump shot last night down the stretch to keep the Hawks on life support. Then he swooped in on Joe Johnson’s miss near the end like an eagle coming in for her youngins and slammed it down the pipe to seal the Hawks win. God, what a thing of beauty and a hugh lift, finally getting the gorilla off the Hawks back knocking out the Magic.

Good News for Hawks Fans: The Hawks WILL win the NBA title either this June or next year in June. I’ll tell you why. The development of the Hawks players will be so dramatic that they will have more talent than anybody else. Let me explain. OK. The hawks placed two guys in the all-star game and deservedly so. Joe Johnson AND Al Horford made it, while Josh Smith and Jamal Craford missed the squad. (Both should have made the all-star team). So the Hawks have four guys on their roster (which is the assumption with most hawk fans) who have all-star talents. I agree. We already know that Joe Johnson will be a first-ballot hall of famer so we already know what his skill sets are. Josh Smith: if josh improves over the summer and shoots at least 10,000 jump shots per day, by the time the next season rolls around, Josh will be as good as LaBron James. Next, AL Horford. As I stated in my blog earlier, should Al Horford continue his progresion and get dramatically better, by the end of next season, “Big” Al should be as good as Wilt Chamberlain. Next up. Jamal Crawford. Jamal has scored 50 points about 5 times in his career, second only to Wilt Chamberland, Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. If Jamal continues to improve at the rate he is going, he should be approximately as good as Jerry West by the end of next year. So there you have it folks. The Hawks roster by the end of next season should be lethal and very dangerous certainly capable of winning a title if they dont do it next year. In fact by the end of the nba season next year, I’ll go out on a limb to say the Hawks may be wrapping up their second consecutive world championship title. I’d say based on those predictions that the Hawks are certainly headed in the right direction. Woody is guiding the troops right into the Promised Land.

Why is it that it often appears that Josh Smith is the only player in the NBA who appears to play under a microscope? LAYOFF!!!! Let’s see now – youngest player to 1000 blocks – but goes largely unnoticed!!! He also surpassed 500 steals – but goes largely unnoticed!!!! The most hardworking defensive player in the NBA – I know this because I am a season ticket holder on row A right behind the Hawks bench, and the commitment and emotional level he brings to the game, and his teammates is incredible! If you people read about the Hawks, you might have read (but obviously not) that Josh works on that shot in practice and consistently hits it then. Personally, I think he should work on a shot off the glass because it would probably give him a better “shot” at shooting a higher percentage when he’s not under the basket. Why do you think he misses a shot in games that he consistenly hits in practice? Maybe it’s because he cares so much, and wants so much to make the shot that he’s psychologicolizing himself ( a word I made up a long time ago when my son was playing basketball). Hearing the crowd groan is probably not alot of help. Same with his free throws – look at his face – you can see how much he cares. It seems like the fact that he does EVERYTHING else a player can possibly do to help win a game gets lost in the shuffle when it comes to this 24 year old, who should have been an Allstar and should be defensive player of the year. Stop putting him under a microscope and enjoy a fantastic player who loves the game of basketball.
