Well, it turns out the Hawks haven’t clinched a spot in the playoffs after all. Elias Sports Bureau called the league to tell them that the Hawks would lose a tiebreaker if they lost all of their remaining games and finished in four-way tie for the final playoffs spot. Well, OK, then. The Hawks will clinch tonight if they win or Chicago loses to Houston. Really.
Anyway, at the moment the playoffs bracket looks like this. Assuming the Celtics are going to win the Atlantic, which is a safe assumption, they would win a tiebreaker with the Hawks. From NBA.com:
TIEBREAKER BASIS:
(-) Tie breaker not needed (better overall winning percentage)
(1) Division leader wins tie from team not leading a division
(2) Head-to-head won-lost percentage
(3) Division won-lost percentage
(4) Conference won-lost percentage
(5) W-L Percentage vs. Playoff teams, own conference
(6) W-L Percentage vs. Playoff teams, other conference
(7) Net Points, all games

Suddenly solid vet John Salmons, not super rook Brandon Jennings, is the story for the Bucks.
The Bucks loom as a potential playoff opponent. Normally the Hawks might not have too much concern about a team that hasn’t been anywhere near them in the standings and can’t match their talent. But these are not normal circumstances. The Bucks are just 38-30 but they are 14-3 since the All-Star break. More to the point, they are 14-2 since adding John Salmons in a trade.
You might remember how Salmons lit up the Hawks for 32 points during Milwaukee’s overtime loss at Philips Arena and did a respectable job checking J.J. until he got Iso-Joed at the end. What you may not remember is how Salmons joined the Bulls in a trade last season along with Brad Miller and helped catapult them to the playoffs. Now my man Charlie G at the Journal Sentinel notes Salmons is having a similar effect on the Bucks since the Bulls unloaded him to clear space for the summer free agent bonanza.
“When we were talking about making a move, we looked at him, and still do, as just a good, all-around pro guard,” Bucks coach Scott Skiles said. “He can post up a little bit. He shoots the ball well enough. He can put it on the floor and get to the rim. He can dish it if necessary. He’s a solid defender. He’s a professional and has a real calm demeanor out there, and that has helped our guys.”
Since the Bucks and Hawks strangely didn’t meet for the first time until the late date of Feb. 28, the Hawks can measure themselves against the new-look Bucks and not the team that was sputtering along at 24-28 before Salmons arrived. Looking at the game-by-game efficiency numbers, the Bucks seem to be a better team offensively with Salmons –they’ve topped 100 points in offensive efficiency in 13 of 16 of games with him after doing so in just 31 of 68 previously. Their rugged defense also hasn’t appeared to skip a beat on defense–they’ve held 11 of 16 opponents below 100 points in defensive efficiency with Salmons after doing so in 21 of 68 games before his arrival.
It should be noted that the Salmons Bucks didn’t go a good job stopping the Hawks in their first meeting and have had similar problems with the better offensive teams. But the Bucks also have more offensive punch with Salmons. This is all along way of saying the Bucks would be a dangerous opponent for the Hawks to face in the playoffs.
That’s assuming the Hawks really, truly clinch a postseason berth at some point.

I don’t understand how we could miss the playoffs if we lose out & CHI wins out considering we’d both be 45-37 and we took 3 out of 4 from CHI this season. Very odd…

I think it’s pretty stupid that the Hawks can go 4-0 against the Celtics and finish behind them just because the Celtics won their division. I thought the whole purpose of changing the system from the division winners being the top 3 seeds to only guaranteeing a top-4 seed to a division winner was to counteract the idea of a weak division winner ranking higher than a stronger 2nd place team in a better division. The idea that winning your division trumps head-to-head record violates the spirit of that rule change.

LOL @ 4-way tie. In that scenario, I guess they would eliminate us first, seeing that both Miami and Charlotte have a better divisional record than we do. What we did vs the Bulls wouldn’t even matter.
So in other words . . . . unless a 10 inch snowstorm hits Jamaica, we’re in the playoffs.

The present bracket is our best shot even if we have to play Cleveland. You have to go through them anyway, most likely and this way, we can hope for a Boston win over Orlando.

They can’t worry about the technicalities of how the playoff seeds are structured. Just gotta worry about winning out the rest of the season. That’s my coach-speak for the year.
I hope Marvin drinks that Red Bull or takes that HGH or whatever it is he took last night, again tonight! It feels good to say:

I’m not a big fan of all the “lets hope we can avoid Orlando” talk.
When it boils down to it…we’re probably going to bump heads with them and/or Cleveland…and we simply have to BEAT them. If we think we are serious contenders, we cant go into the series already thinking we’re gonna lose
If they show up like they did last night, they’ll be a tough out!!!
What I’m looking for tonight is:
1) Does Marvin fade back into the background????
2) Will Josh stop forcing things in the 4th????
3) Will the Hawks’ D regress back to the point where it seems like the opposing team is running lay-up drills with clear paths to the hoop???
4. Will Horford stay in attack mode???

You can say what you want about regular season results. I don’t think there’s any way the current Hawks beat the Cavs in a 7 game series. The Cavs are bigger and just as athletic as the Hawks and have LeBron. Orlando is better than the Hawks too, but beating them is a matter of changing the mentality and strategic approach. In other words, it’s not likely but it can be done. Beating the Cavs ain’t gonna happen without a serious injury or a personnel change.

Don’t expect a stellar performance from the Hawks tonight because of the emotional and physical toll of the Spurs contest. A back to back is tough enough as it is but after an overtime game whare your principals play 40 + minutes then have to get on a plane, it makes for some less than thrilling baketball.

@ Ben, if the Hawks finish with a better record than BOS then we would finish seeded higher than them. If we finish with the same record as BOS, they will be seeded higher than us by virtue of them being a division winner.

I was at the game last night, first game of the season took the family and caught the best game of the season. The Hawks fought back from a 1st half deficit and won a close on in OT. I had great seats in section 120, We were close enough to where my wife noticed and commented on Time Duncan shoe size, and it upset me a little that she was staring at that multi-millionaire feet but oh well, (LOL). I tell you Jamal Crawford puts on a show. He makes moves that I thought could only be made in the video games. He was playing like one of those And 1 guys but Jamal have actual skills. We got us a great one in him. I hop e we don’t lose Joe in free agency, but if we do and Marvin can step up and play consistently well Jamal will be a 30 point a game scorer next year for us for sure if Joe decides to leave. But back to this season, hopefully ZaZa will step up in the play-offs as he have done the past couple of seasons and we can stay healthy, if that happens we all know the Hawks pick up their intensity come play-off time and when that happens we can beat anyone. We just need Marvin to stay aggressive. He played great last night driven to the basket and spotting up. But any way,
GOOOOO Hawks,

No way do you want Joe leaving and Jamal starting. The role of a starting 2 guard and a 6th man playing 2 guard are absolutely different. The 6th man is just expected to come in and score, score, score. Rebounds, assists, steals, defense, and scoring is the responsibility of the starter. Jamal’s awesome offensively and maybe even better than Joe as far as scoring goes, but Joe is just the better all-around player.
Plus, I’d really miss the heck out of his mid-range game in tight end-of-the-game situations.

“Fight the Power”
“Prophets of Rage”
“Brothas Gonna Work It Out”
“Welcome to the Terrordome”
“Rebel Without a Pause”
Those last 3 songs especially, used to do it for me. I’d be out on the court while playing, with those melodies in my head. Public Enemy is arguably the greatest rap group of all time, not only because of Chuck D’s anti-establishment lyrics, or Flavor Flav’s clowning . . but also because the sound production on their tracks were so hype.

The Bucks are a pretty good defensive team with Mbah a Moute on the floor, but in both games Atlanta has played against them, I kinda see the rest of the team have the mentality that Bogut is going to get the rebounds so they don’t have to. When Bogut is out of position it’s like they give up on the board.
I think they are a good team, but they are not coming close to beating the Hawks in a 7 game series.

This is something I have to say for Woody, that probably doesn’t get the attention it deserves:
When a player is developing and improving in a significant fashion, such that as can benefit this team….Woody is not holding that player back.
We’ve accused Woody of holding Marvin back from being a better player. Has he really? We’ve watched Marvin do great things at times (but not that often). He stepped up against the Spurs, but has he always done that when given the opportunity? Has he always done what needed doing when we needed him to do it?
I’d have to say “no.”
Now take Al Horford. All of the sudden, Horford has shown that he can be a presence in the paint on the offensive end, and a guy we can run our offense through as needed. Not in every single case or in every single game, but quite steadily enough that it’s become a staple of our offense.
Woody hasn’t gotten in the way of this, and Al is blossoming…

On a related note, I think we are seeing some physical evidence, lately, of why Josh Smith didn’t make the ASG, and Al Horford did.
I know it seems like Smith had done more for the team at the time. Maybe he did. But can anybody deny what we’re seeing NOW?

I’m not gonna come down on them too hard for choking this game away, after playing 4 games in 5 nights, but choke they did. They slacked off on defense and let Salmons get into a rhythm, and the rest was history. Milwaukee is a good enough team that you can’t give them openings like that.

Disappointing for sure, and instead of the basic FIRE WOODY statements, I would just like to ask Woody one simple tactical question.
Why in the hell did you call your LAST time out with 21 seconds left down 2 points? It took a time out to call a “iso-Joe” play??? WTF??
Then we have a chance with a missed free throw, but instead of having the ball in the front court with 5 seconds left, we have to bring it all the way up court because baldy blew our last time out to draw up “Iso-Joe”. What BS – it’s easy to just say fire the coach, but I would really like someone in the media have the stones to ask him just this question I posed.

What’s funny is that everybody in the league talks about the Hawks bad habits (the lack of ball movement, the one-on-one basketball, the lapses on defense) and how they often resort back to them. We’ve seen how well we play when we’re moving the ball and getting everybody involved, yet we seem to tighten up on a daily basis. It makes no sense.
By the way, 0 minutes from JT0 since his limitted action yesterday. This also boggles my mind.
The Bucks are fielding a rookie PG whose struggled as of late, yet they’re the #5 seed in the East. So, to those who find it impossible to play a rookie meaningful minutes while racking up W’s, LOOK AROUND.

Man, all of this endless optimism is baffling. Anyone that doubts this team has the talent to go deep into the playoffs is an idiot. But anyone that thinks they will playing the way they have lately is an even bigger idiot. When was the last time the Hawks beat a team of substance that was at full strength? Can’t remember? Neither can I. And even the games they won were close games that could have gone either way. Many of them shouldn’t have been that close to begin with. And to give Woodson a pass and blame the players for the team’s shortcomings is utter lunacy. Most coaches in the league would kill for the opportunity to have 5-6 legit players that they could actually run plays for and have a well above average chance of success. Woodson has that and in all the time he’s been here, this team still doesn’t have an offensive philosophy or identity other than give it to Joe and let him work. As good as JJ is, he is NOT Lebron or Kobe or Wade. It’s been proven time and again that he cannot carry this team on his own so with all the talent around him, why does Woody keep letting him try? Run plays for other guys, use Joe as a decoy to set someone else up for a shot. A missed good shot off of a well executed play is something most fans, coaches, gm’s, etc. can live with. A bad shot off of a predictable isolation play that everyone knows is coming is not.

Y’all are way overreacting.
I hate iso-Joe as much as anyone. But he did keep the Hawks in the game in the 4th with plenty of tough jumpers, and he had a very good look at the end of the game that he just didn’t convert.
I think he deserves a lot more blame for the dumb foul he committed than his jump shots. But either way, he played an overall very good game. Team defense, rebounding, and free throw shooting lost this game, not iso-Joe.
The only thing to really take away from this game about the Hawks is that once again they slacked off on defense and let the other team back into the game. This has been a recurring theme recently, and it’s something they need to get fixed before the playoffs. They have had many games in the last month and a half where they had a double digit lead in the 2nd half, but while Orlando turns those games into 20-point blowouts, the Hawks have a tendency to let the other team back in and have to grind out a close win.
I give them a bit of a pass because they were playing their 4th game in 5 nights, but this recurring problem is one they have to find a way to fix before playoff time.

LOL . . . what an ungrateful full of fans. I’m glad a few of you have called these dudes out. All of that euphoria over last night is tossed right out the window tonight.
And how DARE any of you blame JJ for this loss . . . after basically putting this team on his back at a time in which in 4 minute span ( end of 3rd – beginning of 4th ), the Bucks go on a 11 – 2 run to cut a 12 point lead to 3.
The JJ makes 7 of his next 9 shots in the quarter.
And you dudes try to act like he wasn’t ballin?
Yeah, that was a bad foul at the end. Way too overzealous in his denial of the ball of Salmons ( who sold it well ). But JJ did the damn thing in that 2nd half.
It’s amazing the flat out hate some of you show toward JJ ( although I perfectly understand it from you undercover fake fans from other teams, acting like Hawk fans ).
Jamal Crawford basically plays the same way in the first half, and it’s “oooohs and ahhhhs”, slobbering all over that dude. But as soon as JJ takes over a game ad misses ONE SHOT, it’s “why didn’t JJ pass the ball? I know he’s 7 – 9 FG in the quarter, but he should’ve passed”
LOL . . .GTFOH
Great game JJ. We’re going to need you to play just like this in the playoffs.
Like JustChillFans said . . . you guys expect the Hawks to win every game. And instead of simply giving the Bucks props for making plays, some of you go on manhunts to try to scapegoat somebody.

The fake fan comment was to one or two of those Cavs fans who come on the board. It’s no doubt that trolls from other teams frequent this board.
Some of the rest of you simply overreact to everything . . . wins and losses ( which is what I said 3 weeks ago ).
Go look through the Hawks – Bucks play-by-play, and tell me what the Bucks shot from like the 6 min mark in the 3rd, to like the 7 min mark in the 4th.
Look at the amount of shots they made . . . sometimes in a row.
Sometimes, the other team just beats you, no matter what you do to try to stop them.
And the Bucks are far from a lesser team. Snce they got Salmons, they’ve been THE BEST team in the league. They’re like 17 – 2 since that trade ( with the Hawks giving them one of those losses ).
WE LOST . . . simple as that. Most everyone played well tonight. The Bucks just played better on their home floor.
Now, here’s the psychological game of the year for the fans . . . the Battle of Orlando. Lose the battle, and most of you will be in doom and gloom mode. Beat them, and some of you will say that we can win the NBA title, based off of this one win.
LOL . . the league don’t work like that folks. If it did, Cleveland would’ve won a ring last year.

Not picking sides, but that’s the point. Why does it have to be JJ vs. Crawford at the end of games? Why can’t one set up the other and play as a cohesive unit? That’s what I would like to see. They would be almost unstoppable setting each other up because you can’t really guard either one let alone both.

i wish jj leaves & takes woody with him. joe cant carry kobes jock strap. he always takes us out of our of our offense .he took allf our shots leaving none for ah or jc we play like crap because woody lets him get away withj it. he must of had money on this game for us to lose. i been watching the nba since the 50 s & that foul was the dumbest play that i have ever seen. i am so sick of his sefish play & where the hell was his defense on salmons regardless of the stupid defensive swithching. why the hell was teague not played.

@IDIOT POST OF THE NIGHT, my point was that iso is common in the nba. Im not comparing kobe to joe you idiot. Yall acting like we suppose to have plays with easy layups at any point of the game or something. This is the nba not high school. Its tuff at times to score in this league. Boi i wish sum of you idiots could just coach one game and see. What was you saying when joe made like 5 str8 buckets in the 4th??? Answer that.

Ray,
that has been our Achilles heel (Kalin Lucas send help). Just about every “winnable” loss has the same m.o.
Question: Maybe I am not understanding … are we basically locked in to the 4th playoff spot?
Does BOS being Atlantic Div. champ *only* come into play if a tiebreaker is needed or do all div. champs basically default to the higher seeds, even if we end up having a better reg. season record?

Exactly Jeje. We cannot scream for Wade or Lebron we would not have the money for them. We MUST resign Joe.
