Hawks guard Joe Johnson will play Friday night against Charlotte after missing the last two games with tendinitis in his Achilles tendon.
Johnson practiced with the team Friday morning at the team’s shootaround at Philips Arena. Johnson said his Achilles had been bothering for the last month and a half or two months.
“I just felt it was time for me to get a little rest off of it and try and let it heal up a little bit,” he said.
Johnson said he won’t limit his minutes on the floor against the Bobcats. In his absence, the Hawks beat New Jersey but lost at Toronto Wednesday night on a last-second basket.
“It’s going to be good to get back out there with the fellas and start us a new streak,” he said.
More to come later.

Good to have JJ back. I just hope that he will be 100% for the playoffs, because we NEED him.
If I’m the Hawks, Charlotte is the one team I don’t want to face in the first round of the playoffs. They have guard depth and front court depth, and they have an NBA championship HC.
I hope the Hawks play well and beat the Bobcats tonight. With the Spurs coming in on Sunday (and Orlando winning again last night), this is not the time for losing streaks

One thing that comes with age is that it becomes harder to play with nagging injuries. 6 days should be enough if it’s one of those soft tissue tears. These types of injuries are what’s hurting the celtics right now. I think Joe and Woody looked at the schedule and decided that this would be an opportune time to get a rest. He did this last year about this time so I’m not suprised.

Is here the action plan for JJ: If the Hawks have not closed the gap on Orlando and subsequently lose to them in the rematch, than JJ should rest his tendonitis and become a role player for the duration of the season. That way he’s fresh for the playoff. Also if that action is implemented, Woody should also increase Teague minutes along with Collins and Morris giving his starters a break. If Woody isn’t forward-thinking and doesn’t execute this kind of plan he’s selfish and short-sighted. He would be perceived to be just playing for his new contract and a talking point of winning more regular-season games then last year. The CYA strategy would be covered after being pounced in the second round.

Randolph has proven to me he deserves far more playing time than Jason Collins because he actually produces some form of stats other than personal fouls when he’s on the floor. You’re lucky to get a basket from Jason in every four attempts, and while his size can be problematic for the Shaq situation (his only good match up), defeating Orlando comes down to IGNORING Dwight Howard and COVERING everybody else. Look at the games against Orlando, and remove the other players scoring and leave his alone…how much does it account for? Respectively 22 points, 12 Points, and 31 points in total. The other players on the team accounted for 71, 101, and 73 points in those games…any discrepancy between Atlanta and Orlando comes down to an inability to defend anybody else on their squad, and that is a shame of a stat’ to look at. D-Up on everybody else and the Orlando conundrum is solved, because like Allen Iverson in his prime, if you defeat the rest of the team, his output is meaningless. Woody, I’m talking to you, oh yee of such defensive exuberance…

Idiot Watch (truth-serum) said this:
“Josh had to guard the Center because the Horford cant and wont. ”
Now THIS ish is funny!
So Al is SO bad on defense that Woody moves him to cover, NOT their center who averages 17.2 pts. but has him guard All-Star Chris Bosh who averages TWENTY-FOUR points.
And instead of lauding Woody for a good move (since Horford held Bosh to 10 points UNDER his season average), Truth-serum thinks that somehow this was “hiding” Horford’s defense.
Although it’s not exactly clear how taking Horford off of a 17.2 scorer, and putting him on a 24 point All-Star scorer is “hiding” him.
Sounds to me like Woody made a great tactical move and truth-serum hates Horford so much that he can’t even give Woody credit.
That’s some powerful hate from someone who often accuses others of hating.

Nacho,
I can totally see him going somewhere else to try and max out his contract, but I also have a feeling that the Hawks can resign him for even less than what they think they’re gonna have to offer him. It will really come down to his (JJ’s) assessment of the team and their position in regards to getting a championship in the near future (i.e. whatever contract length he’s looking for), and the odds of other teams which are vying for his services. I don’t see Joe as somebody who just wants to walk away from this unless it is really obvious he can do better elsewhere (and in all honesty, the teams with a plethora of cap space aren’t in any real position to guarantee positive growth short of somebody getting Lebronenstein (and that will still rely on his supporting cast to carry him any further than he’s carried Cleveland on his own). I like what we can do if we lose him, and I’d like him to focus on his passing game next year the way Josh Smith did this year if he comes back, but these are questions that are better dealt with during the summer, when we will have nothing better to talk about….
BrittishAnger
March 19th, 2010
4:46 pm
Questions I have walking into Summer and Free Agency;
1) Who wants to buy the rights to Josh Childress so we can free up cap space and put ourselves in a better position to resign J.J. or sign another big name FA (I don’t see him coming back until the Olympiakos deal is up, and his contract is as useful to us as anybody else trying to free up cap space leading into summer)
2) If we were to lose J.J., some analysts assume that nobody’s contract is safe from trade and we’ll be in rebuilding mode again; I don’t see this as true, but if this is the case who do we trade away and who do we seek in compensation?
3) Who do we draft over the summer? We currently have slots at 24 and 54 according to nbadraft.net, and we stand to lose the services of Joe Smith, Jason Collins, and Randolph Morris, or the majority of our bench’s front court depth. We could also possibly lose Mo Evans if he doesn’t exercise his player option.
4) And probably the option which will be debated over quite emotionally leading up to the decision, do we rehire Woodson given the solid level of improvement the team has shown during his two year extension, or do we seek the assistance of another coach, such as my personal choice going forward to improve our PG situation; Byron Scott….
Gimme your best…

I’m a big Marvin Williams fan, and even though he’s not turning out to be what one hopes for from a number 2 draft pick(yet), his first 4 years were decent. He earned his starter’s role, and his new contract.
However, his play as of most recently, has been lacking for whatever reason. I do believe that after tonight, win or lose, if Marvin has another “bad” game, Woodson will seriously consider benching him and start Mo, Crawford, or Teague. Crawford has filled his 6th man role so well, that it may be better for him to continue in that role.
That moves Marvin to the 8th spot, starting Teague, so as to get a better look, and Mo as number 7 because he is stepping up.
Marvin has to step up, produce at least to his seasonal averages of this year, or sit down, realizing that he has had his chances. Without making too big of a shakeup, Woodson really has to find a lineup to consistently beat the average teams, and compete with Orlando and Cleveland.

Sorry man, but that’s for after the playoffs. Too many things could happen between now and then to talk cogently about it.
But I will say this. I don’t think Chills “rights” can be sold to anyone, or traded. As I understand it, he’s still a restricted free agent, and we can either sign him to play with us, or do a sign and trade. And nothing else.

O’Brien, if he has many more nights like Toronto, and especially if they go into a (more) losing mode, it wouldn’t be such a hard choice.
Now if they continue to win at the same clip with him scoring 2 pts…but I don’t think they can.
I pretty much support Woody all the way, and like Marvin a lot, but he would have to be benched, at least just temporarily for motivation, if his poor play continues. I think even Marvin would agree with that. If he doesn’t loose his starters role, he will have to be pulled much earlier when he starts poorly.
Hopefully it won’t come down to such measures, but the way things have been going for Marvin this season, it just may have to.

@ BrittishAnger @4:46:
1. I would shop Marvin first and see if there are any takers, even if the return is relatively little. I’d much rather bring back Childress to start at the 3 at this point, seeing as how we know he has some well-defined skills (floor spacing, athleticism, defense, offensive rebounding) whereas Marvin doesn’t seem to contribute anything consistently right now. Not saying Marvin can’t develop into a better player than this, but I don’t think it’s worth $37.5 million to see him try. The Hawks are better off without his contract clogging up their books.
2. The Hawks should do everything in their power to keep JJ, and I’d be surprised if he did leave (especially to join a sorry ass team like the Knicks) but if he does leave the Hawks won’t let him go without pulling off a sign-and-trade. Seeing as how the Knicks have relatively little of value to offer the Hawks in return, it would be up to Rick Sund to bring in 1 or 2 other teams to ensure that the Hawks receive a player of value to fill in at the 2 or 3. If JJ leaves for no compensation it would represent gross incompetence on the part of Rick Sund.
3. Best player available with the first pick, best fit for Woody’s system available with the 2nd pick. Outside the lottery (and in most drafts, outside the top 5) if you try to reach for a guy that fills a need, chances are you will get burned — look what happened to the Mavs, who picked BJ Mullens 13 picks ahead of DeJuan Blair just because he’s half a foot taller and traded him to OKC. Both of those teams could use a player of Blair’s caliber, but instead they are left with a project. With the 2nd pick, you want a guy who has a chance to actually make the roster, and that’s only going to be someone Woody likes.
4. If the Hawks can luck out into someone who has proven he can coach and develop players better than Woody, like how the Rockets lucked out into Rick Adelman, then by all means get rid of Woody and go after that guy. But if that guy is not available, the Hawks are a lot better off giving Woody a short-term extension rather than going after other coaches with similarly mixed track records.

The starters were mostly atrocious in the first half with only Marvin truly responding worth anything. Josh was making one “almost good” pass after another, and I think part of that was the ‘Cats realizing he can pass, and staying in the passing lanes.
Joe looked incredibly aggressive on both sides of the court, but after not getting a couple of foul calls and then getting nailed for a traveling call that was utter BS, he slowed down.
The ISO was in full effect, and I could see where one player didn’t want it a couple of times, and had to yell at the others to get them moving.

Easily JJ’s wost shooting game as a Hawk. And unlike Scottie Reynolds of Villanova, he can’t get a foul call . . . . not one.
And to compound that, Crawford is 2 for his last 9 from the field.
Hawks are going to have to play defense, and get some easy buckets, to pull this one out . . . if they can at all. And they still may need JJ or Crawford to get red hot.

Interesting how JJ can’t get a call, but Jamal manages to. Who knows what is up with the refs.
On the flip side of that coin, Jamal is constantly putting pressure on the defense when he drives the ball, as they can either foul him or let him score. That would be the difference between him and JJ right now…JJ is still trying to get separation for a fallaway jumper.

Woody, you are making al horford look bad by placing him in the center spot and asking him to defend the rack. Shame on you woodson. Why dont you put josh there?Hes a power forward. called a time out with 1.19 to go with the hawks up by 3 after a miss by Jax.
results?
1. Gave a breather to the defense to rest and regroup.
2. Gave the ‘cats enough time also to regroup offensively and for Larry Brown to stop Jax from shooting more from 3
3. We came out WITHOUT ANYTHING DESIGNED OFFENSIVELY AND WENT INTO ISO JOE AND ISO JAMAL
that is a clear testament of Woody’s complete ineptitude!

Didn’t see the game, but it takes a playoff mentality to come from behind and win a game in which you were not only trailing the whole way, but your superstar had his worst game. Charlotte ain’t no joke either. They will be a handful for someone during playoff time. Good win for the Hawks.

This was an escape win, man. I will take it no doubt, Hawks needed it. Joe sucked most of the night, but came up big when it counted. I wish he would do that some more.

Oh yeah, and you gotta love seeing that the frontcourt won the rebounding battle against a good rebounding team.

This loss was DEFINITELY Horford’s fault.
What’s that? We won?
Well Horford must have gotten “dominated” again right?
What’s that? He outscored the other center by 10?
Well I’m SURE the other center, was it Ratliff? must have outrebounded Al, right?
Oh really? Al by 13 to 9?
Well IF we had lost it certainly would have been Horford’s fault.

Nice win but it shouldn’t have come down to that. This team is frustrating in late game situations.
Crazy game. And what was up with the chicks trying to flash the camera behind Bob and Nique?
Nice to get a big win though in front of a big crowd.

Great game and good win.. Glad we won the rebounding battle but the Hawks seriously have to box out better. They gave up a lot of rebounds due to not putting a body on someone and boxing out. Hopefully they improve in that area.
Truth serum or whatever name you go by. Does it really take making up a thousand names just to make the same lame point over and over and over again. We get it dude. You don’t like Horford. Good thing you are not a GM. I cant think of any NBA team that would turn down the opportunity to have a guy like Horford on their team…And please give up that bubba crew thing too its wack. But we get it you don’t like Horford but love Woodson. You have made that clear so its no need to keep typing that gibberish over and over and over especially when you look like a clown time after time.

WHY DID WE NOT PUT THE 2ND UNIT,INTACT,BACK INTO THE GAME IN THE 3RD QUARTER…
THE ENDING DID NOT HAVE TO BE LIKE IT WAS..
WE COULD HAVE POSSIBLE PUT THIS GAME AWAY IN THE EARLY 3RD QUARTER BY USING THE 2ND UNIT…
OUR COACHING STAFF ACT AS IF THEY DON’T KNOW HOW TO PUT OUR PLAYERS IN POSITION TO WIN GAMES..ITS IF THEY SEE THE BENCH IS OUTPLAYING THE 1ST UNIT,THEN ITS UP TO THE 1ST UNIT TO PLAY UNTIL THEY GEL AS A UNIT..BUT,WHEN THE 2ND UNIT STALLS A LITTLE,THEY ARE YANKED!!
GREAT WIN,BUT,ITS WHAT I WILL CALL A DUMB WIN BECAUSE,IF THE SAME THING HAPPENS IN THE PLAYOFFS,WE LOSE….
WE LOSE!!
AND THERE WILL BE MORE AND MORE FIRE WOODY,TRADE JOE CRAP ON THIS BLOG..

Say what you want about Joe…we can’t replace him if he leaves.
We will become a champion by adding, not subtracting. [Players, that is]
Sybil – the same applies for Al.
We have a terrific nucleus.[Big four]+Teague & plenty of nice trade chips. All you whiners and bitchers, go find a patchwork fantasy team to follow. I admit that I do a fair amount of gripin’ about the gentleman who draws up plays while Josh is walking off so that Jamal has to run grab him to tell him what was said in the timeout.
Never mind.Go Hawks!

This is why I say that the Hawks are mentally tough. When they got down 10 in the 4th, they could’ve easily mailed it in. But they clawed and fought their way back into the game, got a few breaks ( S-Jax missed FTs ), and kept themselves in position enough to win the game at the end.
And what a mentally tough game by the captain. After going 0 – 10, he makes 7 out of 11 . . . all coming in the 4th and OT. And I love the “superstar mentality” he displayed in those final 10 or so minutes in the game. He had made up his mind that, if the Hawks were going to lose, it wouldn’t be because he sat idlely by and didn’t want to take charge.
JJ WANTED to take the game over, and he did just that.
JJ should’ve definitely had about 10 to 12 FT attempts tonight. Somebody needs to go over this game, highlight the non-foul calls, and either post it on youtube or send it to the league office . . . or both.
It’s a shame that you can’t even breathe on Lebron, Wade, and Durant . . . but JJ and Smoove can’t get borderline calls to save their lives. JJ could have bullet wounds and bite marks on his arm, and still couldn’t get a call.
Thanks for hitting that shot JJ . . . because this blog was about to EXPLODE into all out Woody, JJ, and Bibby HATE MODE.
And LOL @ all of you who were constantly pessimistic. Haven’t you guys learned anything about this team yet? Coming from behind in the 4th isn’t the problem. Holding the lead is the problem. We play just fine when we really have to concentrate and execute, to get back into a game.
Damn . . . what a shot by JJ. Ratliff was like 3 inches from blocking that.

Great win, but the Hawks must do better on boxing out! After playing great defense the Hawks would let the Bobcats get extra shots because they fail to block out. Watch the games closely – happens almost every night. Do the Hawks have any plays they can run with under :25 seconds that are not ISO? They could run plays to close quarters out. Getting real old. Great shot by JJ, you can only run ISO with 2.2 seconds. Woodson did great with the substitution offense for defense late in the game. (Ironically you may have missed it but West saved the game in regulation as Wallace was about to rebound a put the Bobcats ahead and he swatted the ball to Hortford. I don’t understand why Woody kept Josh in during the final seconds of regulations instead of Evans. Only one big to crash the board should have been enough.

And defense was the key folks. We only scored one more point in the 4th quarter than we scored in Toronto. But we held Charlotte to 15 points.
That’s the key to the 4th quarter blues . . . play some dang defense.

Good win tonight. My only real complaint is the fact Woodson has yet to realize you can’t keep trying to stop teams down the stretch playing his beloved switching DEF. Charlotte gave us all we could handle by consistently taking advantage of us switching everything. PG RFelton killed us by forcing the switch and going to the basket and hitting those runners against either Horford or Smoove.
On the final play in regulation, after successfully using that same switching strategy throughout the entire gm, Woody stupidly had us playing the same switching DEF they’d successfully exploited all night long. As a result, they successfully isolated Felton against Smoove and he took him into the lane and tied the gm.
They killed us on the OFF boards, especially in the 1st half, because we allowed them to consistently isolate our PF and/or C on one of their backcourt players above the FT line, which left our guards under the basket trying to rebound against their Bigs. THAT’S JUST A STUPID STRATEGY TO TRY AND USE THROUGHOUT A GM, EXPECIALLY IN THE FINAL MINS, PLAIN AND SIMPLE.

Didn’t catch the game tonight. Watched the last 10 seconds with JJ game-winning shot at the end in OT. It’s great to watch a Hawks win, I just hope they can pull out the next couple of games. Speciafically that Magic game that I plan on going to.
