Atlanta Hawks at Raptors: Woodson gives Bibby some needling

Toronto–Made it to Canada, where somehow it’s a nicer day than any I can remember in Atlanta for like the last week. (When I saw the border agents, for some reason all I could think about was: “She got a cousin at customs that get (stuff) through . . .”)

Chris Mannix of SI.com asked Woody if he’s concerned about Bibby’s problems with quick point guards as the Hawks head to the playoffs.

“You think Bibby has trouble with quick point guards,” Woody said, smiling. “I’m going to tell Bibby that. Maybe he better speed it up in the playoffs.”

Bibby and one of those quick point guards he has problems with. (Johnny Crawford, Jcrawford@ajc.com)

Bibby and one of those quick guards that can give him trouble. (Johnny Crawford, Jcrawford@ajc.com)

Chris Sheridan of ESPN.com got to Bibby before Woody could and relayed the exchange.

“You keep some things, some things you can’t,” Bibby said, and it looked like he would let it go and that would be it.

But after a bit he added: “I aint’ the only one who has trouble with quick point guards, I can tell you that.”

Bibby was offered the hand-check rule as an out but he wouldn’t take it.

“I’ve got other things to worry about,” he said.

My take: Bibby is Woody’s guy, and the coach knows Bibby gets motivated by talk about his decline. So Woody will use such slights to coax him.

When Woody met with Bibby a few weeks back, he told him he needed to be more aggressive offensively. He was back on that theme again last night.

“He’s passed up a lot of shots he should have taken this year,” Woody said, adding with a smile: “Maybe he’s saving it up.”

From what I’ve seen, Bibby is a prideful player who cares about winning. He’s a gamer, too, so it’s no surprise he was back in the lineup last night after sitting out practice on Monday.

Look for more of Woody’s sly needling of Bibby to get him fired up for the playoffs. Or maybe more of this will do the trick.

– Woody keeps insisting he’s not really looking at the playoffs picture beyond still trying to catch Magic from 3 games back with 16 to go: “We still have a legit shot to win the division”

His standard line about the postseason: “We’ll figure that part out when we get there.” I believe him.

He’s been getting questions about Milwaukee lately but he keeps deflecting them.

“It could be Milwaukee, Toronto, Charlotte, Miami,” Woody said. “Or if any of those teams fall back Chicago could slip in there. It’s not just Milwaukee we’ve got our eyes on. But I haven’t given much thought to the playoffs. We are focused on the regular season.”

– The Raptors have become the anti-Bucks. They are reeling, losers of five straight and nine of 10. Assuming the Bulls get healthy at some point and that avoiding D Wade still is a good idea no matter what he’s got around him, the Raptors might now be the team everyone wants to see in the first round.

Raps coach Jay Triano might replace Jarrett Jack with Jose Calderon in the starting lineup tonight. Not that the Raptors think that’s the ticket. Calderon in the Toronto Star:

“It doesn’t matter who starts, it doesn’t matter who plays more minutes, we’ve got to win games. We’re upset because we’re losing games. We’re not upset because I’m not playing or I’m not starting or something like that. Let’s keep things simple: We’ve got to win, and everything else doesn’t matter.”

Here was the part in that story that should make the Hawks’ eyes get big: “(The Raptors) once again are being hammered on the defensive glass – Golden State had 18 offensive rebounds and Portland 19 in Toronto’s past two losses – and their transition defence is lead-footed.”

– The Hawks might be for sale.

Bad play by Marvin at the end, but the entire front line, starters and subs were completely ineffective defensively. A few stops earlier in the gam and it doesn’t come down to this.

I don’t know what to do about Marvin, he just doesn’t seem to be improving. I cringe whenever he takes a shot. He’s an embarrassment. Anybody know what his shooting percentage is outside of the paint (minus layups and dunks).

Unbelievable! It’s a little late in the season to blow a 6 point lead to the Raptors with less 2 minutes on the clock. The Hawks continue to leak oil even as the playoffs loom…

Great game by Marvin. He really brings a lot to this team. His defense is ferocious. His rebounding is phenomenal and his offense is unstoppable.

We lost this game in the first quarter.

Tough loss, but 24 assists in the last two games by our starting bigs.

TWENTY FOUR!!!!!!

Is there another pair of 4/5 ’s in the league that can do that?

THAT’S why I’m happy to see the ball go through them more.

I had a feeling something bad was gonna happen after that 6 pt swing where crawford missed a 3 and TOR came back and knocked one down.

I guess it’s safe to say we can stop worrying about winning the Division.

It wasnt as prevalent as in some other games, but I think a few too many horrible possessions came back to bite the hawks in the butt.

Josh’s long jumper……Crawford going for the “big blow dagger” with the deep contested, bricked 3 pt attempt …..we could have got much better shots ….especially with the way Horford was going in the 4th.

Is there a dumber player in the NBA than Marvin Williams. What’s his deal? He is always out of control. The worst thing he did was start wearing that arm sleeve. He seems to be more concentrated on pulling at it than paying attention to the game. Watch him closely and you will see how he is constantly pulling and adjusting it when he doesn’t need to.

Hawks blow an 11 point 4th quarter lead. They were up by 9 with about 5 minutes to go.

And once again, less than 20 points in the fourth. This is the 13th game where the Hawks have scored 19 points or less in the fourth. Their record is 2-11 in these games.

Is it wrong for us to expect the Hawks to execute in the 4th? Even w/o JJ, we had this game wrapped up.

If ISO-Joe was playing….Those big, high percentage buckets that Horford got fed inside probably would have been bricked jump shots attempted over a double team.

Woodson,

The next time you and Marvin are lying in bed, could you ask him to step it up before your love and affection for him become TOO obvious. Mo Evans out played him by a factor of 10 tonight and you still elected to go with Marvin in crunch time.

Damn Woody just Blasted Marv. Woody you shoulda fouled with 12 secs to go, blew 11 point lead , defense no where to be found in the 4th. Marv messed up, But alot of OTHER factors cost us this one also.

lmao@AM….Marvin.

Marvin always looks more comfortable, excited and into the game on the bench with that towel head gear, neatly arranged tucked under his warm up, yet over his head at the same time…resembling some sort of Duck Sphinx look.

He looks more into the game and enthusiastic on the bench than he does on the court. Marvin is definetly a Gay Williams.

Fact of the matter is that Al was schooling the raptor’s bigs. We should have kept going with him. But guys, If the Hawks do their job and box out, like their supposed to, they would’ve been up by one and the ball with 15 seconds left. Horford and Josh didn’t do their job in that particular instance and that is what costs us the game.

No need to get upset about this loss. We know how the Hawks are. Like I’ve said before, the most up and down team in the NBA. You just never know with this bunch. And did I mention that Marvin stinks?

Kitis

I know I may draw a lot of ire by defending Marv on this blog and yes, 2 points scored with his minutes played is inexcusable, but he wasn’t out of bounds when he got rid of the ball on that last rebound. It is close, but if you look at the angle that they showed about 5 minutes ago on Hawks Live he gets it away pretty clearly before his foot goes out of bounds. The ref made the call with the pressure of the home crowd on him in the heat of the moment and it was definitely a tough call, but it cost us the game. Rewind it and watch it in slo-mo. I wish ‘Nique and Bob would point it out cuz we’ve got yet another example of getting jobbed this season.

Josh could’ve boxed out, too. He is one of the best athletes in the league, but he had 3 mental lapses down the stretch that killed us (that always-ill-advised 20-footer, the defensive mix-up on Bargnani’s trey, and not boxing out properly on Turkoglu’s missed FT).
