Woody will watch and see if Teague can D up guys better than Frank Robinson. (Curtis Compton/ccompton@ajc.com)
Secaucus, N.J.–Joe Johnson is out tonight. He’s not going to play tomorrow at Toronto, either, and Woody said J.J.’s status is up in the air for Friday’s game against Charlotte at Philips Arena.
The Hawks say J.J. has a strained Achilles’ tendon.
“He’s day-to-day,” Woody said.
Bibby’s back is better and he will start tonight. In a surprise move, Woody plans to go with My Blog People MVP Jeff Teague at point guard and Bibby at shooting guard instead of using Mo Evans to replace Johnson.
It’s Teague’s first start.
“We’ll give it a shot,” Woody said, adding with a smile: “I can always sub early.”
“(Teague) has played with different combinations,” Woody said. “This is no different. He will do what he does best: push the ball, defend, get people involved.”
Teague, low key as always, said he’s ready.
“I’ve been playing basketball my whole life, and I’ve usually started,” he said. “It will be the same as coming off the bench.”
Woody said he made the move because he wants Teague’s quickness against Nets guard Devin Harris. Harris might miss the game due to illness but presumably Woody would stick with Teague either way.
(Edit: Harris is out with an upper respiratory infection, but Woody said he probably would stick with Teague: “We drafted him for the future, and I’ve got to develop him if I’m here as coach (next year). I think he’s gotten a little bit better but we haven’t seen enough of him. I think I’ll still keep him in there.”)
“He’s quick, so you have to try to keep him out of the lane,” Teague said of Harris. “He can score; we all know that. I’m not going to say I’m going to lock him down or anything like that. I just want to try and contain him.”
The Hawks will be much smaller in the backcourt without J.J. (6-7). Teague and Bibby are both listed at 6-2. Harris is 6-3 and Nets shooting guard Courtney Lee (a ‘Naptown Pike High product like Teague) is 6-5. The Nets can also bring 6-7 Chris Douglas-Roberts and 6-6 rookie Terrence Williams (Go Cards) off the bench at guard.
Teague, the 19th overall pick out of Wake Forest, said he’s matured through the season.
“Most definitely,” he said. “At the beginning of the season I wasn’t comfortable. I was nervous and didn’t want to mess up. I’ve gotten more familiar with the coaches and they’ve gotten more familiar with me.”
I’m not sure if anyone around here has noticed, but Teague’s minutes have been up and down this season.
“Give the rook’ (credit),” Woody said, referring to Teague by the name he almost always uses to address him. “He played well in the exhibitions. It’s not like we forgot about him. We’ll give him a shot.”
– Does this game worry you at all? Hawks TV voice Bob Rathbun notes that strange things happen when the Hawks play here. They’ve lost their last five at the arena with its latest name as the Izod Center but that still is dark, dank and–after the circus just left town–stank.
“Interesting venue,” Teague said. “Older than I expected.”
The Nets are set to move to the Prudential Center in Newark next season. Coincidentally, Woody played for the Nets when they opened what was then called Brendan Byrne Arena in 1981. Larry Brown was the coach.
This Nets team is worst than any of those that beat the Hawks the last five times here. They are threatening to be historically bad, on pace to tie the 1972-73 76ers for worst record in league history at 9-73.
Obviously the Nets want no part of that, so maybe that helps to explain why they showed signs of life in recent road losses to Memphis, Dallas, Oklahoma City and Houston.
“They are playing harder,” Woody said. “In their last outing (at Houston) they were very competitive and I don’t expect anything different tonight.”
Clearly missing Harris would be a major blow to New Jersey’s efforts to beat the Hawks. But, as Rathbun says, strange things happen to the Hawks in Jersey.
– Talk amongst yourselves, Hawks fans.

I dont like having Teague and Bibby in the game together, but I understand Woody wants to have Mo to backup Marvin.
Why not just start Mo and Teague, bring Crawford off the bench, and split the backup SF minutes between Josh and Mo?
It will be interesting to see how the team responds without JJ. Hopefully Marvin can pick up some of the slack since Joe is out (similar to what Marvin did when Joe was out a couple games last season).

Woody said he made the move because he wants Teague’s quickness against Nets guard Devin Harris.
So how many (quick) PGs have we been burned by (while Teague sat listlessly on the bench), and now Woody decides that he wants Teague’s quickness in there?
Come on Woody, you’re late. Plus Devin Harris might not even play tonight, because he’s injured.

I’m very interested to see how this will go down. People put a little too much stock in starting games anyway. I could easily found fault in Woody’s decision to deal Teague a hand with Bibby being the SG. Defensively, this could be a recipe for disaster. It has the makings for a confidence set-up for Teague as well if things don’t go as plan. However, (quoting Woody: “When opportunity knocks, you got to be ready”) as a rookie who’s been starving for minutes, you must take whatever you can get and make the best it. I hope he has thick skin if this all blow-up in an unfavorable way.

Is it me or do Woody still dont have confidence in Teague? I mean he says “We’ll give it a shot,” Woody said, adding with a smile: “I can always sub early.” What kind of comment to say after saying you will give him a try by starting??
I wonder was Woodson treated the same way when he was a rookie? Did he not get respected by his coach, did his coach kill any and all confidence he had b4 entering the NBA, did he get buried on the bench too, did his coach killed any chance of him getting any rookie acolades??? If the answer is YES to all 4 questions, I see now why he treat rookies the way he does..that’s how he was taught.

Great job Woody. Let Bibby play shooting guard so he will have to guard guys much bigger than him. Makes a lot of sense. Maybe he’s trying to set Teague up for failure. What is with this organization and this starting lineup crap. Your best players should start period. Jamal should be starting, he is our second or third best player. When we had Chills, he should have been starting over Marvin. You can’t name many teams in history other than San Antonio (Ginobilli) and Dallas (Terry), who don’t start their best players.

“(Teague) has played with different combinations,” Woody said. “This is no different. He will do what he does best: push the ball, defend, get people involved.”
Woody said he made the move because he wants Teague’s quickness against Nets guard Devin Harris.
There goes Woody again, supporting one of his players and saying that the young man has some skills, and can play. But we all know that he doesn’t mean a word of it. He’s just being politically correct for the sake of the media. In truth, he privately tells Sund and the owners that Teague sucks and he wishes they hadn’t picked him.
Right, TS ?
Man please.
Another shout out by Woody for his rookie. Woody likes the kid, and he wants to bring him along slowly. Teague doesn’t have a great jumper coming into the league, but he’ll learn and do better if he works hard enough. In the meantime, he’ll do what Woody says he does. Defend, push the ball, get people involved.
I hope he does well tonight, and earns every minute that he plays. Woody is giving him a vote of confidence, while knowing that the learning ladder has twisted and difficult rungs. Hopefully, Teague will back that vote of confidence with a good game. Lord knows many people will be looking for him to fail, all for the purpose of winning arguments that don’t even matter, or just a chance to bash the kid while supporting the coach.
I hope the kid does fine. But in the end, I hope the Hawks win, more than anything else.

Astro Joe,
Sounds like a plan, but I hope he also plans to run screens for him. Bibby will be up against larger players like Courtney Lee (6′7″, I think). He could have a bit of trouble getting his shot off.
The Truth
March 16th, 2010
5:31 pm
I’m still scratching my head with this one; Bibby as the starting SG. I mean, can Bibby really create his own shot? If Bibby isn’t spotting-up and wide open for a jumper or coming off of a screen, he is useless as a SG on offense. (And) We all know about his sub-par defense. Is this the best Woody can come up with? Now that I think of it, I guess so. This strange line-up is the results of a weak bench acquisition beyond Crawford (but I won’t go there). Now we might pay the price. Also, according to this article, JJ injury could last much longer than a few days. In fact, it could completely alter the remaining regular season minutes for JJ and the playoff strategy. With this scenario based on our current schedule, it could dash any hope of capturing the 3rd seed and force us to just hang-on to the 4th seed (which isn’t a guarantee).

Yeah, count me among those who doesn’t mind seeing Bibby start at the 2. Lee is 6′5″ and isn’t the guy who takes people off the dribble on that team (that would be Harris). I don’t think the Hawks lose a whole lot in this game defensively by starting Bibby at the 2 as opposed to Crawford.

Ray,
Courtney Lee is actually 6-5, but regardless, Bibby is only 6-2.
Game 66 is when Woody decides to go with Teague because of Devin’s quickness. I hope that means Teague has finally earned more consistent PT (because the Hawks have gotten burned by quicker PGs all year).
Astro
I hope the Hawks play inside out, especially with JJ out. That should help Bibby get some easy looks.
I just hope having Teague and Bibby on the court at the start of the game does not put the Hawks in a deep hole.

Also, if Crawford starts, he will be dominating the ball on offense. For those of us who want to see Teague handle the ball and push the tempo, the chances of that happening with Crawford on the floor are much lower than with Bibby.

We need to let Bibby & Joe rest. Give Teague, Mo, Crawford and Mario full run for 3 games. Live with the results. Getting Bibby and Joe 100% is crutial this time of year. We can’t risk pushing them back too soon. The 4 listed above can handle the competition. We’ll just need top play from the frontcourt. Should be fun to watch…if Woodson has the guts to let it play out. Crucial minutes at a crucial time for very important role players. Let them fill their role! Time is now!

I suspect that Jamal will still get the bulk of the minutes in the back court. Woody is simply allowing him to maintain some of his routine by leaving him as 6th man. Besides, if Jamal does start, you expect very little offensive impact from the bench.
Better to give Teague a try against the Nets than a good team…low risk, wise move.

This is good, even if it fails in this little 2-3game span. Woody “can” now see more possibilities after having used the rookie in a bigger way. Bibby and Teague will make more impact on how well they pass. If they play Hawks ball either or both will be fine. Move the ball and pass the ball. I assume Marvin, Jamal, Al and Josh will absorb the JJ attempts. Bibby, Teague or Evans just need to play within themselves and play within the flow of the offense. No big deal.

“Lord knows many people will be looking for him to fail, all for the purpose of winning arguments that don’t even matter, or just a chance to bash the kid while supporting the coach.”
For a man of fact, you is whacked out. First off, the Lord (if there is such a thing) doesn’t give a hoot about the Atlanta Hawks. Second, if you ever read people’s entries, most people around here want the Hawks to win. We don’t care HOW they win as long as they don’t cheat or injure someone or go into the stands after us. Most people are hoping that Teague will be able to handle his opportunity against the lowly Nets so the Hawks will win. So, NO, completely wrong that “Lord knows many people will be looking for him to fail, all for the purpose of winning arguments that don’t even matter.” As for bashing the kid while supporting the coach, none of the more than 1500 blog entries I have read support this view. The COACH is being bashed and rightfully so….he can’t think on his feet or the Hawks would be at Cleveland’s heels with about 7 more victories and 2 more Cleveland defeats.. The prevailing feeling is the COACH deserves bashing because he doesn’t develop subs and therefore leaves the team vulnerable when subs are needed as in injuries, fast paced games where people tire out, and back to backs where people tire out. TEAGUE will get bashed when he throws the ball away, can’t direct the team or especially if he does something that costs the Hawks a game. So “bashing the kid while supporting the coach,” in addition to misreading the mood of the populace and being a totally uninteresting concept that means nothing to anyone….is just annoyingly wrong. .

The sad thing is that no one will say that Woody did the right thing by NOT putting Teague back into the game. This team was dreadful for about 20 minutes in that half, but the best lineup we could put out there tonight, got the job done. Now we have a comfortable lead.
Coach won’t get credit for putting the obvious best lineup in to secure the game though.

sam’l ,
First, the blog does not represent all Hawks fans. I’ve heard people in Phillips Arena and on other blogs talk down about Teague.
Second, I never said that many people on this blog want Teague to fail. There are some that do, some that don’t, and some that don’t care much either way.
Yes, most of us want the Hawks to win. I don’t know how often you’re on here, but there are some who complain regularly about the Hawks and say the team sucks, win or lose. Those people tend to overlook every win that isn’t against the Cavs or Magic.
Third, I don’t know what your problem with me is lately.
Fourth, I seriously doubt you’ve read and reviewed all 1500 blog entries, much less the last 1500. If you had, then you’d have known that the comments I made to Grandad a day or two ago were nothing but pure humorous sarcasm. And, you would know precisely how I feel about Mike Woodson, an opinion that has been well documented both here and on the fan blog.
Fifth, READ what I’m saying. Stop interpreting what’s not there. Did I say “many people HERE will want Teague to fail, while also supporting the coach?” No, I did NOT. I’ve been blogging here for the last 4-5 years, since Sekou Smith was here. I know what the “general populace” has been saying.
I don’t have beef with you, don’t understand why you have issues with me, other than to misunderstand some of the things I’ve written. What I find interesting is that others aren’t having the same problem…hmmmm…

He’s a rookie, and it shows. He’s clearly got things to work on. But, I’ll say this, this is one reason we should be playing the kid more meaningful minutes in some of these games. He clearly needs to polish his game and that’ll only happen with minutes on the court.
By the way, I’ve seen JT0 play much better than this when he’s entered games for a few minutes, so I’m not taking too much away from his performance today. I wish he would’ve took advantage of this opportunity and used it as a way to boost his minutes going down the stretch, but I don’t think he’s convinced anybody that he’s ready.

This is a good opportunity for minutes for Teague, but what are the expectations for him? Should we expect him to get 20 points and 10 assists? Anybody who unequivocally supports Woody by bashing Teague (and this isn’t everybody who supports Woody, so don’t go there) will take any chance they can get, waiting for Teague to fail or otherwise fail to dazzle. One game does not a player make.
He played well against New Jersey earlier, but I’m expecting solid, not spectacular play. We’ll see what happens. He should get more than 10 minutes this time around, provided he is not stinking it up out there. If he stinks it up, then of course he will go to the bench. Nothing unreasonable about that…
And this:
Ken Strickland ,
In my mind, Teague playing horribly means getting into foul trouble, blowing one defensive assignment after another, and turning the ball over a lot. If he’s doing all that and we’re losing because of it, why keep him in the game? I know that Bibby has done his fair share of blowing defensive assignments or simply not impeding his opponent’s progress. However, he has one of the league’s best assist/turnover ratios, and he rarely gets into bad foul trouble. The biggest thing is taking care of the ball. Again, if Teague turns it over, and that is causing us to lose to a team we should be (and have) squashing, then how do you justify it? Let Teague play no matter what, and lose to the Nets? I think not.
So you see, it’s already been said. Ahead of time, even.

Hawks seem to be playing with more energy, more ball movement, and still destroying the nets without JJ. Jamal running the team with a mid-level 7 footer and this team will not lose a step next year, may be better even if Joe Johnson leaves. I pose this question early, lets see what happens against a quality team in Toronto tomorrow. When we had Joe Johnson before the all-star break but no Crawford we got destroyed by Miami, who is worth more on this team, I think crawford as he drives and dishes and manages the clock better.

Melvin,
Venom Spitter is not the only one questioning the Joe Johnson situation, I have watched almost every Hawk game this year and the team just changes when Crawford is out there, the play with an extra step and if notice the nights they win its cause they create separation when Crawford is out there in the second, third, and closing out the fourth. I think more time with Crawford and mid-level center then Joe’s contribution would be spread more among the team and not missed, rest of the players will easily make up that 22 points per game.

I love Joe but I wouldn’t give him max money. Give his spot to Jamal (and extend him), and give the leftover shots to Marvin, who we’re stuck with for good or bad anyway because of his contract.
Smoove and Al will continue to grow and take over this team. Find a scorer or two for the bench—and you’ve still got a hell of a team without Joe.
Just my half a cent.

Teague will be SOLID threat if he can develop a decent mid-range jumper to go and get that floater in the lane down. I think he can already play a decent role as a true PG because he has the ability to weave his way through traffic and penetrate. He just needs to find a way to let his offense loose. He was a explosive scorer at Wake Forest, so he’s capable of getting there. He just needs time to adjust and let his game translate.

The problem with using a game like this to assume that the Hawks would be better off without Joe is that you are blaming Joe for Woody’s shortcomings. Joe, I’m assuming, didn’t arrange a secret meeting with Woody to hatch an evil scheme to always run isolation instead of installing a scheme that involves ball movement. My guess is if Joe leaves and Crawford starts, you’ll be seeing an awful lot of iso-Crawford next year. And as much as I like Crawford, his shot selection gets a lot worse when you rely on him to carry your offense, as he’s proven throughout his career.
Over the course of a season, I would prefer iso-Joe to iso-Crawford. Crawford is perfect in his current role.

Does anyone want Sund to use this game to dot the i or cross the t on any decision? I certainly don’t. A good win… I don;t think anything else needs to be gleaned from this game. Not Teague’s performance, not Jamal’s performance and ot Marvin’s performance. Playing the Nets this seaosn is a freakin’ anamoly. It is a data point to be discarded. In fact, none of the stats from this game should count. Playing the Nets is akin to playing an exhibition game. Like when the Braves play the UGA baseball game. Cute, fun, but it doesn’t count.

Ray, Sautee . . . I’m just saying. It is what it is.
I simply made an observation with my halftime comment. People blame Woody for every player that hasn’t developed here, instead of blaming the REAL CULPRIT . . . the actual player.
The truth is that Teague basically had everything handed to him on a silver platter tonight. Even the guy he was supposed to slow down, Deviv Harris, didn’t play tonight.
And for whatever reason, the kid just didn’t respond well at all. The people who assert that the kid isn’t ready to lead yet, just might be right.
And honestly, this was the same thing that happened to guys like Salim, Shelden, and Acie. They all got their shot to prove themselves on a consistent basis, and they just couldn’t do it.
Woody knows his team. He always has. That’s what makes him a good coach. Not a great one, but a good one. He knows his personnel like the back of his hand.
When Shelden struggled, and Solo was outplaying him, Solo got time over Shelden.
When Salim would come into a game, and go 1 – 4 FG in 5 minutes, and Lue could come in and go 3 – 4 FG in 5 minutes, the decision of who to play was a no-brainer.
When Acie thought he was going to get playing time last year, but Flip came in and immeadiately made an impact, Flip made Acie expendible.
I hope Woody starts Teague again tomorrow night. Give the kid a chance to bounce back. If he doesn’t though . . . oh well. He had the “perfect storm” tonight, and didn’t take advantage.

“Yes, I understand the need for ISO’s on occasion, but why should sharing not be the staple?”
I agree with that, and I’d love to see the Hawks run an offense based on ball movement, but I’m just saying that Woody is the weak link here, not Joe. Installing an offense that makes sharing the staple is Woody’s job, not Joe’s.
“Still not sure I want to give Joe the max, though. ”
In a perfect world, only the elite, undisputed, team-carrying players — and there are maybe 10 of them in the league, if that — would get a max contract. That list probably includes LeBron, Kobe, Wade, Melo, Duncan, Nash, Howard, and Nowitzki, with Durant probably joining them by the end of the year. The next tier of stars, which includes Joe, Bosh, Roy, etc. probably deserves slightly less than the max in a perfect system. That’s the way it was intended when the salary cap was put in place. Unfortunately, for a long time that hasn’t been the case. So the reality is that the Hawks either give Joe the max or lose him.
The problem with losing him is that the chances of getting a similar caliber player to replace him in a sign-and-trade are next to zero. The long-shot Chris Paul trade that I re-post every now and then is the most likely scenario of that happening, and that is very, very unlikely to actually happen, even if it does make some sense for both sides.
And to me, the difference between Kobe and Joe is about as much as the difference between Joe and Jamal. Kobe, on a bad shooting day, still finds a way to do other things to help his team win. Joe, on bad shooting days, generally has a negative effect on the offense, but a lot of that has to do with Woody’s system — I’m confident that in a better scheme he would find a way to impact the game positively in other ways too, although not to Kobe’s extent.
Crawford, on the other hand, is almost guaranteed to be a net loss on a bad shooting night, because his shot selection even on good days is not all that great. Don’t get me wrong, I was a big fan of the Crawford trade, and I love what he’s provided for the Hawks, but he’s done it all without having to shoulder the responsibility of carrying the team offensively. He is perfectly suited to his role. If he was made the centerpiece of the offense, I’m pretty confident we would see a lot more contested bricks from him — in other words, exactly what he did on the bad teams he was on most of his career.

You make a good point, and there have been plenty of occasions this year when Joe could have involved his teammates more but chose not to and cost the Hawks possessions as a result. I still think if you look at the season as a whole, Woody is responsible for that more than Joe is, though.

Northcyde ,
Count me among the choir with that sermon.
I never said or even believed that Teague was ready to take over at point guard. I’ve only wanted to see him play more than 9 mpg. Maybe as much as 16-18 mpg. I’ve quoted Woody many times where he has said that he felt no need to throw Teague to the Wolves, and that he thought Teague would take over the team in time . Nothing more, nothing less. Yeah, there have been people who wanted Teauge to start and play 35 mpg, while Bibby was crucified and burned at the stake. You’ll always have those types of reactions. I think anybody with common sense knows better. Then again…
I agree that Teague did not play well in this game. Nothing more can be said about it. What I do know is that Woody has publicly supported the kid, and so have his teammates. I’m glad to see that, and mentioned it FREQUENTLY during training camp, preseason, and regular season.

I don’t think Teague loses confidence nearly as much as people want to say he does. And I don’t think Woody is destroying his confidence, either. At the same time, I think his quotes aren’t those of a person who doesn’t care, but rather a guy who gets over stuff. If Teague says he isn’t worried about something, it’s probably for the sake of getting the point across that he’s not going to dwell in misery on a bad performance.
Remember what he said after going 0 for 11 or 0 for 15 in a game much earlier this season? “You won’t see that happen again.”
I agree with you. He’ll be fine.

Vava74,
While I appreciate your support of the Hawks and often your opinions…on this Teague thing, I have to disagree. Playing Bibby at shooting guard is a statement to “the Rook”. Your shot isn’t there. You have to be ready when your name is called. You aren’t ready.
Teague is good; just not ready. A 20 year old is rarely ready. Rondo couldnt get burn his first year in Boston. Wasn’t ready. You can’t teach speed and the ability to break down defenses. JT has shown me talent, just not that he’s ready to lead a playoff team. Fortunately, the Hawks aren’t the Hawks of 2005-06. Now is about winning….not preparing for the future. The future is NOW.
Next year JT will no longer be “the Rook”. It’s with him to work on his shooting this summer. I’m sure he’s learned more in practice than he would in another year at Wake. Comments from Bibby that he’s learned to hold him; comments from Ray Allen about riding the pines as a Rook. His teammates haven’t given up on him; his peers see a baller…..neophite notwithstanding….and in time, if he puts in the work, he’ll get his shot. Bibby is aging….so JT gets that shot here or somewhere else…IF he puts in the work on his shot. He has the ability to break down defenses; if he didn’t he wouldn’t be in the NBA today.
I remember being 20. I knew EVERYTHING. I knew NADA. Jeff has a lot to learn at a very difficult skill position. I think he’s doing OK. Acie never learned to break down defenses. He’ll never make it. A shot can be developed; speed and court awareness are there or they’re not.
