Hawks Squawks: Knicks 99, Hawks 98

Smoove gets stuffed. (AP Photo)

– Dramatic ending but it didn’t have to be that way. The Hawks lost by a point on a night when they really only played defense for parts of two quarters. Now they are 1-3 against the Knicks, a game behind Boston for No. 3 in the East and 3.5 games behind the Magic in the Southeast.

Josh made a nice strip of Toney Douglas on New York’s final possession and Jamal corralled it. “I didn’t call a timeout because I thought we had numbers,” Woody said.

– Jamal did a good job pushing it into the lane and made a nice pass to Smoove. Wilson Chandler got up and blocked it at the rim. Al’s follow was too late. “Jamal made a great play,” Woody told reporters. “Smoove normally finishes that. He would normally would put that away. But Chandler made a great play.”

– It’s not always easy to explain with numbers (though in this case New York’s 50.6 percent shooting does it pretty well) but the Hawks just look like a much different team when they are getting after it on defense. “Our defense finally picked up late in the fourth quarter and got us back in the game,” Woody said.

– You could see the contrast during certain possessions. The Knicks opened the period with a Douglas layup when Jamal was inattentive on the weakside. Later Eddie House buried a jumper when Smoove was late to rotate and made a halfhearted attempt to challenge. Chandler made a 3 when Gallinari got into the lane and pitched out and Bibby was late to close.

– But during the comeback the Hawks showed how they can take over with defense when they decide to do it. Chandler missed a 3 under pressure leading to a Smoove fastbreak and two free throws. Jamal recovered to challenge Gallinari’s 3, leading to a Horford steal and J.J.’s free throw that got the Hawks within 97-96.

– A possession at the end of the first quarter might have been best of all for the Hawks. Mo hounded Gallinari, then switched to David Lee on a screen and denied the pass as Horford showed hard and forced Gallinari to give it to Chandler. J.J. harassed Chandler, Smoove helped out and Chandler shot an airball.

– Impressive to see the Hawks working hard and helping, but the problem is that kind of spirited effort only lasts for a few possessions at a time. What happened to the squad that digs in and wins with D even if nothing else is going right?

– And where is the focus? Bibby threw a pass to no one with the Hawks down 92-85. And it’s hard to find much fault with Josh considering the way he’s playing, but that long jumper with the Hawks down 97-96 and six seconds still on the shot clock was damaging. That came after he was dominating the Knicks on the block.

– Lee got his fifth foul early in the fourth. The Hawks never really went at him aggressively and instead jacked jumpers. “I thought our shots coming down the stretch were awful,” Woody said. “We could have gone inside. We were in the penalty early in the fourth quarter and didn’t take advantage of that.”

– The Knicks set an NBA record with 18 3-point attempts without a make while losing to the sorry Nets on Saturday. Then the Hawks show up, open 3s are plentiful and the Knicks make 10 of 15.

– Somehow, the Hawks kept losing Gallinari at the 3-point line. The guy had made 141 3s in 61 games. “We talked about it before the game, the guy can shoot the basketball,” assistant coach Larry Drew told sideline reporter James Verrett during the game.

– Bibby was a non-factor with 1 point, 0-for-4 shooting, one assist and a turnover. Jamal was just 5 of 16 while missing lots of runners trying to draw fouls.

– That’s three Knicks victories in four games against the Hawks. “We’re not matched up well for some reason,” Woody said. “We played well enough to win tonight. But we were our own worst enemies coming down the stretch.”

Joe Smith hasn’t played since suffering a bloody nose in the first half at Miami. The Hawks say he’s OK so apparently Woody’s just not using him after he was good against the Heat.

–Iso-Joe: missed stepback jumper (led to a Lee dunk) and a tough runner made over Al Harrington.

– I’m out, Hawks fans.

I really hate to beat a dead horse, but it’s really inexcusable this late in the season that Jeff Teague is not getting some meaningful minutes. When Bibby is on the court, the only time he benfits the Hawks on offense is when he is making 3-pointers (which isn’t happening so much these days). On defense, with Bibby on the floor the opposing team is virtually on a power play as it seems like the Hawks are a man short.

While it’s true that the Hawks have more depth off of the bench this season than in the past 2 years, they aren’t so deep that they can allow their top draft pick to waste away on the bench, especially when the starting PG is such a liability. Woody just doesn’t freaking get it!

3 things are very clear after last night’s game:

1. The energy level that was so constant, especially on defense, at the beginning of the season is gone.I attribute it to the non use of the bench/ poor substitution patterns: the 3 guys wh get anytime all come in at pre arranged times and play only an alloted amount of minutes no matter what is actually happening in the game. Solution: use the end of the third quarter and the first three minutes of the fourth to rest the key players,ie Josh and Joe for the push during the 4th quarter.

2. The lack of energy in the early part of the game requires a superior and consistent effort to catch up at the end of the game which cannot and will not happen every game. the guys are conserving energy in order to play through the 4th quarter. Solution: Adjust the starting line up and place Bibby and Marvin in a position to play hard against second teamers in order to maintain a higher level of productivity throughout the game. Jamal starts at point but plays the same number of minutes as well as his 4th quarter role. Mo starts at the 2 with joe starting at the 3 but again, their 4th quarter roles and minutes remain the same. the big difference would be offensive production from the bench.

3. The guys are adjusting, albeit slowly, to getting the frontcourt more involved in the offense. Joe is no longer the entire show, but the adjustments to that state of affairs is going to take some more time. Solution: continue to develope an offense that features a more balanced approach in terms of jump shooting and points in the paint. That is where the team’s future is and how well they balance the offense and keep thie energy level on defense will determine their future success. And I believe that the Hawks will have a good playoff run inspite of their recent woes.

northclyde, while I agree there is overreaction to losses, the Hawks are not just going to flip a swtich and start playing well again. They play like they think they are the Lakers: just hang in and let Kobe bail us out. Only…no Kobe on our team.

This is an immature team. Destined to lose in the first round. They are not as good as they think they are.

So much for all that “we have to play more scrappy than the other team” BS Joe Johnson was spinning at the break. Since then they have only been out scrapped by every team they have played.

Bibby should not be on the court. Why won’t Woody realize that? Put anyone in, at least Mario can contribute on defense, defensive effort does not go into slumps like Bibby’s shot.

Bibby contributes nothing as a point guard, he is merely a shooter who is very unathletic.

Dear Northcyde ,

Sports blogs are places people can go to for the purpose of venting, discussing, debating, etc. The last time I got to hear a series of sermons on how bad the fans were, how emotional they are, blah blah…it was somebody posting as Kirkinga . Oh, you sound JUST like him. I figure either you aren’t the same person, or you won’t admit to it if you are. Doesn’t matter one whit…

Something tells me the Celtics fans had fits about us sweeping the season series with them. Laker fans are seeting about losses to inferior teams (which would be the ENTIRE WESTERN CONFERENCE for starters) and complain about Kobe. Wake up from the Walgreen’s commercial and realize where you are. Of course, if you really want to take a stab at fans, go to a sports bar and tell them they should quit reacting with so much emotion. Tell them not to say “player X sucks”. Tell them not to boo. Tell them to quit having their opinion, because they don’t have a right to it. Tell them you’re laughing at them because they expect perfection, and shouldn’t have anything negative to say. Tell them everything you say here, if you have the stones to do it. The only thing funnier than you coming with that “holier than thou” stuff on a BLOG of all places, would be you trying to do the same thing in a sports bar….or better yet, in Phillips Arena.

But do yourself a favor. Call security first, because there is the chance that somebody (particularly somebody with a few drinks in his system) will take exception to your sermons and WHIP YOUR BUTT all the way back to your parking space. Think you might have an overly emotional reaction to that? LOL…

I just don’t agree with the idea that Bibby shouldn’t be on the court at all.

He is struggling like crazy, but he does have the ability to contribute. It’s just that his ability to contribute has become less consistent by a significant margin, and he appears to be degenerating.

I can’t stand by and act like all is well. Our defense is worse this year than it was last year. Our offense is better than last year’s, but suddenly teams are able to neutralize it via the zone defense.

I’m not buying that the Knicks were red hot from deep as an excuse for last night’s loss.

So were the Warriors. BOTH times they played us? Same with the Knicks? Same with Detroit? There are parallels to be drawn here. We’re not a lock to lose the first round of the playoffs. We’re not a lock to win, either. I like this team, but I’m not excited about what they will do next. I don’t like roller coaster rides, and one of the keys to becoming one of the better/best teams in the league is to not have those dips and valleys so often.

Vava, yeah, we are a bad defensive team against the 3-ball. You’re right. That’s one of this team’s weaknesses. Congrats on that discovery. The good news is that relatively speaking, we have few weaknesses than all but 3 teams in our conference. And in comparison to those other teams, we have the 4th best “elite player”, the 4th best coach, the 4th best bench and the 4th best payroll. And surprise, surpirse, we’re the 4th best team. Shocking development.

Big Ray

What are fans supposed to think when the coach, GM, and players are talking about becoming an elite team? Didn’t JJ say he wanted to be an elite player this year?

Well then why is it so silly for fans to hold these people to the standards they set? An inconvenient fact for the self-righteous, I’m afraid. Fans didn’t set the bar any higher than the team, coaching staff, and front office did.

I thought Mike Woodson was talking about being better than 4th in the East. He said something about winning the division ahead of the Magic. I guess maybe Mike Woodson did not get the memo about all that other 4th place stuff and was just talking out of the side of his neck. Somebody should have told him and the players that the hawks are 4th in everything and have absolutely no chance of being better.

Big Ray, it kills me when players whine about fans ripping them, too (not that the Hawks have done that). But, they want the big crowds, national TV games, and all the glory. Just don’t want to hear the backlash when things don’t go well. Think they would rather everyone be sheep (northclyde, looking in your direction here) and just smile, pay their money at the door, and pat them on the back for losing to bad teams.

Terrell ,

Oh, come on. On the other hand, if we continue to enjoy the good health that we’ve had, we should expect to have a better showing in the playoffs. Last year, with injuries to key personnel, we let the Miami Heat push us to 7 games, but still won. And we got swept in the second round while dealing with yet more injuries. This year, with everybody healthier, and another proven scorer in Jamal, we should not only close out the first series a bit faster (or so I hope), but we should not get swept in the 2nd round. That may not seem like a very big expectation, but not getting swept is an improvement, however marginal.

Chips ,

Games like these make me lose hope in the team. I am a Hawks fan for life but if we can’t beat teams that we should beat, how can we expect to win against teams that most people think we will lose against? How do we expect to even play a Orlando Magic team in the playoffs (if we get there) if we can’t beat a lowly New York Knicks team? Frustrating.

Of course, most of us don’t get to play a game for a living, become a millionaire while we’re at it, and retire after a decade or so (most of the time well before you’re 40 yrs old). I can get down with debating opinions any day, but I don’t do so well with being told how to think or feel. Neither should anybody else…

I don’t think all players feel that way, or even all the time. But sometimes they do. Sometimes I wish people would let me do my job and stop commenting on how it should be done (when they can’t do it, and wouldn’t know how). But then, I don’t work in entertainment. If you say you’re going to earn $25,000 in bonuses, and you’re working your tail off, then I dont think anyone will fault you or hold it against you if you fall a little short. But if you’re slacking off, or making the same mistakes over and over that make it difficult to reach your goal, then thats a different story.

Ray,

I can take whatever you want to throw at me!

I have no problem with Astro, I know that he feels the same and probably breaks things at home when he watches the Hawks, complaining about the same things I do.

He simply gets a kick out of stating otherwise around here. It makes him sound “senatorial” and “balanced” instead of just a normal sports fan and if that is his thing, I am OK with it.

It’s his bad, not mine.

Perhaps when we fail dramatically in the playoffs he will come down to earth and share with us his frustrations like everyone else.

Now, changing the subject, I think you should launch a new thread on the Hawks’ Nest:

Who should replace Woody at the end of the season? Remember that we don’t have the $$ to hire the Avery’s and the Scott’s, so we need to be creative.

My gut feeling tells me that Laimbeer would be a good choice, however, I have a feeling the a black coach would be a better PR choice.

I have no idea if Laimbeer is really a good coach but his record in the WNBA and his past in the NBA as a tough and smart player seem to indicate that he should do well.

Any thoughts? Michael Cooper as an alternative?

Grandad

March 9th, 2010

I re-read Michael’s article/blog and this jumped out @ me:

“Impressive to see the Hawks working hard and helping, but the problem is that kind of spirited effort only lasts for a few possessions at a time.”

One [Wdsn] must understand that a team supposedly built on the foundation of *hardnosed ["spirited"] defense cannot possibly hold
up under the stress of 40/per & 82, + play-offs, while grinding
six good men into submission.
Please note:
*To play hard/spirited/intense, there must be @ least a 9 man rotation
minimum. A real rotation, real and consistant/uniform min. for bench
[Teague], plus real rest for key players: Joe, Josh, Al, Jamal.
*If you have a defense 1st philosophy, then you must commit to a
player such as ‘Teague’ over ‘Bibby’ in crunch time. There is no rationalization one can give that will convince me otherwise.
*hardnosed – we do not have an enforcer. [Oakley/Artest/Mahorn/etc.]
Zaza – would be that, if given the role. He barely plays anymore.
Honestly, we should bring in Reggie Evans.
Little things; kidd’s cheap shot on Wdsn., put in RE, let him take care of business. Joe and Jamal even Teague constanly get hammered going to the hoop and never get a call. Put in RE to clean it up.
(he could be the Hawks-Harvey dahl).
Someone mentioned earlier [our record v LbJ, Kobe, D.Wade, etc.].
I bet RE wouldn’t be afraid to foul that clown in Cleveland.
They’re gonna call it anyway…make it count.
*I’m about sick and tired of Wdsn’s doghouse:
Teague, Joe Smith [I guess], Zaza, Mo [comes & goes], R.Morris [why ?].

I apologize for the pontification.

Vava, Laimbeer is someone I have wanted for a while. Michael Cooper failed in his previous NBA stint (much too soft if I remember correctly). I don’t think the Hawks will worry about a PR friendly move if they replace Woody, they will hopefully hire the best (affordable) candidate and not worry about “PR”. It’s not as if Woody sold a single season-ticket… nor would Mo Cheeks or Byron Scott for that matter. In fact, the type of coach we could afford would not likely sell incremental tickets… that type of affect belongs to brand name coaches who are out of our price range.

I’ve been a Woody supporter since the old days, but I feel he has taken this team as far as he can. He is not a good sideline coach. The last two seasons, the Hawks look like world beaters for the first month. Then opposing coaches figure out how to play them. Woody doesn’t (can’t?) adjust and we finish the season playing .500 ball. And contrary to last season, we’ve had no one injured and out for weeks at the time.

O’Brien, how do you really know we have the 4th best bench? They go days at the time without taking their warmups off. If Woody would play Teague more, he would be a huge boost off the bench, especially when Bibby has bad nights. Leaving the starters in the game basically the whole second half has to take a toll. If Josh would have been rested properly, he would have never gotten that last shot blocked.

I’n not optimistic at all about the playoffs, because while the Hawks have gotten where they are because of pure talent, most of the other teams have been “coached up.” Coaches win playoff series

Grandad,

You are right on the money: the switching defense is EXTREMELY demanding physically and mentally and to believe that you can get 6/7 guys to work like crazy for a full season doing it consistently is IDIOTIC.

This is also valid within a game: the shortened rotation in the second half are killing us since it is impossible to keep up that defensive intensity with constant movement and attention AND getting anything on the offensive end without rotating your players.

Josh’s botched lay up yesterday was a clear evidence that his legs were dead and the his hops were gone by the end of the game.

Why didn’t we get to see Joe Smith in the game? It’s been 6 quarters in a row!!!

If he feels that he has to rest Joe, why doesn’t he activate RandMo instead of Collins?? What’s the purpose of having Collins in the bench if there isn’t any situation in which he would be used against the Knicks?

It’s bewildering. Yesterday – as it had already happened @ MIA – I was 99,9% SURE THAT WE WOULD LOSE and I wasn’t even nervous. I simply waited (until 3.30 AM) to see how we would manage to lose the game.

Lets face it yall the Hawks are just a tease. They are entertaining to watch but when it comes down to it they just don’t have what it takes to win a title.

Woody should have been fired 3 years ago, Bibby’s so old all he can do is bring the ball up the court and hang out by the 3 point line, Marvin runs into people and scores most of his points from the free throw line, and Joe is not a superstar.

If the Atlanta Spirit had a clue on how to run a NBA franchise they would have gotten something for Joe before he leaves. Joe wants to win a ring and everyone (except those who work for the Hawks) know they are nowhere near competing for a championship.

I really like Bibby. but now realize it was a mistake for Sund to re-sign him. He gets the minutes Teague would have been getting and by now Teague would be an impact player, instead of a cheerleader. I guess no one realized how much Bibby’s skills had eroded the past 12 months. Hindsight is 20-20.

So Josh’s failed dunk attempt was Woody’s fault? WOW!

Astro,

Josh was worn out and had no lift. Look at Josh’s minutes during the past few games.

In particular, look at the number of consecutive minutes played in the second half of recent games.

Com’on not even kidding you can look away from that!
