At least three reports surfaced over the weekend saying Zyrdunas Ilgauskas will re-sign with Cleveland.
His agent, Herb Rudoy insisted those reports are “very premature” and said the Hawks are still in contention to sign Ilgauskas.
“I’ve gotten a number of calls about that, and it’s absolutely not true,” Rudoy said today. “Could it happen? Absolutely. But he has not made a decision. That will be at least a few more days from now if not more.”
Rudoy said he wasn’t sure of Ilgausaks’ motivations other than a desire to play for a team with championship aspirations.
“We haven’t gotten past this whole thing of being traded away,” he said. “That was sort of expected but it didn’t make him happy. He’s got a lot of years invested in Cleveland, and that makes it a very complicated decision for him. He wants to win a championship, but I don’t know how (else) he will make a decision. He told me he’s taking his time, and that’s what he will do.”
According to reports, the list of suitors for Ilguaskas had grown to include Boston, Miami and San Antonio as well as the Hawks, Cleveland, Dallas, and Denver. If money is an issue for Ilgauskas, who reportedly gave up $1.5 million to secure a buyout from Washington, then the Hawks, Jazz and Heat can offer him the most salary.
Those three teams have their full mid-level salary cap exceptions available and could offer Ilgauskas 36 percent more in prorated salary than Cleveland, which has only its bi-annual exception available. The Jazz and Heat are near the luxury-tax line while the Hawks are comfortably below.
The Hawks, who also have their bi-annual exception, have appeared reluctant to use either to sign Ilgauskas. Rudoy wouldn’t discuss the specifics of the offers to Ilgauskas but said the Hawks have been “very aggressively pursuing” him.
“Rick Sund calls me at least once a day to talk about how Zyrdunas would be helpful and would have a great opportunity there,” he said. “Joe Smith has called him told him what a great situation it would be for him. I just don’t know what he’s going to do.”
– Over the first 45 games, the Hawks allowed 10 opponents to shoot better than 50 percent and 17 to beat them on the boards. In the last 12 games, six opponents have shot better than 50 percent and eight have collected more rebounds.
No doubt the Hawks have issues on offense, especially late in games. But maybe that wouldn’t matter so much if they defended and rebounded at the level they did for much of the first half of the season.
“(The slippage) has been huge in terms of how we started the season and where we are today,” Woody said. “Somehow we’ve got to get our mojo back in terms of our defensive attitude and rebounding the basketball because we are just barely hanging on in those areas. We are going to need that the rest of the way. You look at the good teams that are winning, they are getting after it defensively and they are rebounding the ball. If we come in with the mindset that we are just going to outscore teams that’s not good enough for me.”
Why the slippage considering Woody’s a defensive guy?
“Our scoring is up,” he said. “I don’t know if guys just feel like we’ll make it up on the offensive end. Sometimes that’s good and you do that. In the past couple years I can count on our guys to get key stops and rebounds and hustle plays. We are not doing enough of that right now, and we’ve got to get back to that.”
And he said all that before the Mavs shot 52.2 percent and had 50 rebounds to 41 for the Hawks. Now here come the Bucks, who’ve won six straight and nine of 11 overall and six straight on the road. They are tied for 14th in the league with a 50.3 percent rebounding rate while the Hawks are tied for 24th at 49.4 percent.
– Late add: The post-game blog will go up late tonight because I’ve got to run and catch the team’s flight to Chicago. You know, in case you care.
– Talk amongst yourselves, Hawks fans.

Sybil:
Do you want Al (who’s out there running ‘COY’s’ switching defense) to run back and defend the basket on every possession, even if he may have switched on to the opposing teams point guard or whomever?
Even your ‘COY’ said he would have to adjust if Big ‘Z’ were brought in. So the problem is not Horford but Wdsn – refusing to make adjustments.

Sott Skiles might be on the list for COY too. Redd has been out a long time with injury, and other guys have been injured too, and they have a rookie starting PG. But here they are, 7 games behind the Hawks in the loss column.
MC,
There are times when the Hawks play good defense, and still get outscored, and there are times when we score 30 points in the quarter, and still get outscored. We’re very inconsistent offensively and defensively.

I would have T’d Kidd for attacking Woodson physically and then jawing verbally. If Woodson can clearly be shown to have been out of bounds, the final few seconds of this game should be replayed. End of story. As I said in my other blog, this rule has to be changed or any team in the league will go hunting for coach when down by 4 on their last possession, and inevitably there will be an injury. Imagine Amare or some other Kidd imitator barrelling into Phil Jackson’s reconstructed legs or toppling ;Coach Karl or Portland’s McMillan. McMillan would have jumped on Kidd and strangled him.
d.Woody’s ;comments: You and I both know that sometimes a team’s future performance can be judged by the way they react to previous efforts. I would say that Woodson’s comments portend more disaster. When Woodson saw the zone was hurting the Hawks he should have taken at least one and possibly two timeouts to guide his team through this. We are told by another player (Johnson?)that they knew what they had to do. Obviously, they DID NOT KNOW what to do. Woodson wants to take credit for the loss by praising Kidd’s trickery is totally inappropriate, especially when he is telling his team they CAN’T AFFORD TO LOSE THOSE LEADS, as if anyone making millions and millions of dollars and living the life doesn’t already know that.
I think you get the picture. Woody still isn’t up to speed. Woodson should
A: Protest the game with taped evidence that the Hawks again got robbed by the officials.
B. Study that damn zone with an eye to using it himself against unsolvable teams like ORL, ;CLE
C. Somehow provide his club with the energy and vision and proper motivation to go out and play like the champions they are for 48 or if need be 53 minutes a night.
D. Hire another assistant who can specialize in analyzing what INSTANTANEOUS CHANGES NEED TO BE MADE at any one time in a game and stay in contact with that tactician.
Why do I care? Why should the Hawks be so interesting and maddening? Really somebody tell me.
Kudos to Josh Smith….I know he was pissed…I think he had the right attitude. interview him, and he probably wouldn’t gloss it over…..He deserved the win.

*Josh is not horrendous; you’re correct he doesn’t box out but gosh darn he does so many good things how can we nit-pick?
*Joe does not have the personality to be a true leader.
*You know if Bibby were like Teague then he’d be Teague. Oh!
*About marv – Think about it, he actually plays defense better than he’s capable of playing. To hear people on this board, he’s:
clumsy, slow, awkward, has no balance, can’t jump, non athletic, and plays like a duck. [ I forgot to mention he has webbed feet]
Heck-fire if he plays as well as he does under those circumstances
think what the rest of the team could do if they played above their potential.

@O’Brien: i hear you. numbers don’t always tell the whole story but i think the D and rebounding have definitely dropped off lately. for the Hawks that usually means less chances to score in transition, too. when the Hawks were defending hard against Minnesota and Dallas they looked very, very good. and then that inconsistency creeped in.
@ Granddad: Woodson says he wouldn’t have Z showing hard on pick-and-rolls like he does with Horford and Joe Smith. said they would do a lot of zone looks with Z: “I wouldn’t put him in a position where he could fail.” i know there is (justifiable) skepticism about how Woody would adjust with Z but he’s been enthusiastic from the start about adding him so i think he would find a way to use him effectively. i also wouldn’t be surprised if he moved Marvin to the bench with Z as the starter.
but that’s all just for fun since Z is headed back to Cleveland.
@ chef tim: i’m for that since he tends to stand in just the right spot to block my view in the first half.

LOL @ WOODSON adjusting for Z. Is this a joke? He makes no adjustments at all.
Anyone else remember Miami gm 2 in the playoffs last year? We destroyed them in gm 1, game 2 at home and we lay an egg. I was there. Worst game I’ve ever been to and Hawks lose maybe 5% of the games I go to. We had 3 days off to “adjust” and tweak here and there and we played like !@#$ in game 2 and didn’t even try change up how we guarded Wade.
Summary: Woodson makes no adjustments, doesn’t listen to his assistants, and we freeze in the 4th because we have no offensive system

The Bucks have a quick, dynamic point guard and a 7 foot double-double threat at center. Not a good combination for the Hawks. Bogut is going to get his 20 and 10, but the Hawks need to clamp down on the rest of them to get this win.

It’s interesting to hear we tried to sign Stackhouse. Do you think his decision to sign with Milwaukee had anything to do with his knowledge of Woodson’s reluctance to utilize his bench beyond JCrawford? Have you noticed how BJennings has been unable to get in the lane since Teague entered the gm. And have you also noticed how we haven’t had to switch everything, as a result of Teagues ball pressure and ability to fight over picks?

The good thing about being in the Eastern Conference is that it promotes positive self-esteem. A team can play as bad as the Hawks have, and still win the game against a team like the Bucks, making them feel like they are an elite team in which they clearly arent. It also makes teams like the Bucks feel like they are a pretty good team being “playoff contenders” when they really are worth much less than the stuff at the bottom of a dumpster.

A bit disappointing to be down 2 at halftime after the start we had. Hopefully they’ll turn it up a notch in the 2nd half and clean up some of the mistakes.
Something that I noted that I liked in this first half was seeing JT0 get minutes with Crawford at the 2 and JJ at the 3. I think this should be a look we try more often when Marvin’s giving us nothing at the 3. Maybe JT0 could provide some sort of spark from that aspect playing alongside two scorers. I want to see this lineup more often when it’s evident Marvin/Bibby aren’t giving us anything.

One thing I’ll give Josh Smith credit for is he always plays with energy and emotion. I blame him for “getting out of his game” and trying to do too much at several points during a game (especially) in the 4th) but perhaps that’s because the other guys wont step up and do sh*t. One of our worst free throw shooters is the only one with rocks large enough to take it to the whole, draw contact and get to the line/and 1 opportunity????

These are times when you need a floor general. It’s evident that there’s not a PG on the floor that can dominate the ball and create for others. That leads to JJ/Jamal creating for THEMSELVES.
This alone should tempt any nay-sayers to get on board with more minutes for JT0. I’m honestly getting tired of watching the same result night after night. I don’t care how many games back we are in the seedings, I’d rather find a solution for our glaring problem. It’s clear cut that we struggle in the 4th quarter. I think this is in part because Woody tightens things up too quick (getting away from the bench and playing out the starters for much of every 4th quarter) and the lack of ball/player movement on the floor. Whatever the problem is, we need to address it. I can’t take the Hawks seriously if they continue to display these 4th quarter struggles – it’s getting to be a nightly thing.

But, I’m confident enough in him at this point (or not confident enough in Bibby – depending on how you look at it) to go ahead and play JT0 in moments like this one, where we’re struggling to get buckets. His ability to penetrate could set things up for others.

Al needs to rest!! maybe 2 games playing 20 minutes maximum. He looks tired, his shots aren’t falling (although in this game he has good numbers), he is not rebounding as he usually does, he is not protecting the middle. Sautee, in this game every time Bogut has posted up Horford and been single-covered he has scored. Horford I believe has scored on a post-up on Bogut once. I wouldn’t go as far as to say Bogut owns Horford, but Bogut has played a better game despite the stats. Milwaukee hasn’t done a good job of consistently getting him the ball.
And I’m not one of the people who typically criticizes Horford or says he shouldn’t be playing center. But this is the truth in this game so far.

Those of you who think we are “haters” for criticizing Joe are missing the point. If Joe would drive inside more and put more pressure on opposing interior defenses, he would have so much more room to shoot those jumpers he loves. By refusing to utilize that part of his game, he makes it easier for opponents to defend him. This is something which, ironically, Jamal Crawford understands. Jamal drives inside when his shots aren’t falling. Joe just continues to shoot brick after brick hoping he can shoot himself out of a slump.

Danilo Gallinari is a “shooter”. Daequan Cook is a “shooter”. Joe Johnson is a lot more than just that. The fact that he limits himself to just “shooting” when he is capable of so much more is incredibly frustrating. I’m not saying he hasn’t had good games this year, or even that he hasn’t had a good season. In fact I’m not even saying he shouldn’t shoot. I am saying that on days like today when his shot is clearly off, he doesn’t understand how to change his approach to maintain his effectiveness. He is too talented to have a net negative effect on games like he’s had today.
But I agree about the coach.

Are you kidding me. These Hawks have regressed as the year has gone by. They were better when they thought they weren’t. Now they are falling back into the team that plays 3 quarters of team ball and the end of the game like they have forgotten what got them there. ISO Joe is not effective against good teams. Where is the bench. Where is the ball movement. They are going to make the playoffs. They ought to forget about position and take the remainder of the season to work in the bench players and no matter what the score play team ball at the end of the game. Win or Lose.

I have a much bigger problem with Joe’s 2 free throw attempts than his 26 shots attempted. If Kobe was in a scheme designed around isolating him, there’s no way he (or Melo, or Wade, or Brandon Roy) would end up with only 2 free throw attempts.

there is a difference b/t those players and a Joe Johnson… yes he has the ability to play make.. drive… etc. however, like Vick when in doubt.. he will go to what he does best.. if he feels its time to drive he will … if he trust his shot more he will shoot… w/ his lack of explosiveness and the way refs officiate him trust he’ll do what gives him the best opportunity to excel. if thats his highly contested floater he’ll take it, if its a fall away he’ll put it up.. its a preference thing with Joe, you either like his game or you dont.

Josh, for one, was consistently being aggressive and ended up with 22 points on above 50% shooting. Mo Evans was hitting shots when he was in the game. Granted, Bibby and Crawford weren’t doing the Hawks any favors. But if Joe was driving more, he wouldn’t have to rely on jump shooters to convert his dimes. He’d be able to lay the ball off to big men too.

Looks like the Hawks pulled out the W. I’ll take any win we get, but I still leave this game with more concern than joy. This team isn’t the same team that was the talk of the league earlier in the season. I think it’s natural for a team to have its ups and downs. But, the way we handle the downs ultimately determines which route this team takes going down the stretch. We’ve got to figure out these 4th quarter lulls.
I could honestly care less what seed we’re currently in or how many games back we are of the Cavs/Magic/C’s. This team clearly isn’t playing as well as they need to be playing at this time of year. So, I still feel the door to experiment is open.
By the way, as I say after every game, more minutes for JT0 please.

If the Hawks don’t get out of Round 2 this year, I hope they let Joe walk, fire Woodson, and re-build around the kids. Last year and this year have given a conclusive answer to the question, “How good can your team be when Joe Johnson is supposed to be your best player?” I’m ready to give the keys to the franchise to Josh and Al myself.
I also just don’t think Woodson is very smart. If you really like having a gunner who plays no defense and shoots at a below-average rate on the floor more than someone like Marvin, who at least defends and rebounds fairly well, I don’t think you understand basketball very well. I could stomach Jamal more if the Hawks had a 9 or 10-man rotation, where Jamal was shouldering the scoring load of a reserve team, but since the Hawks basically don’t play their bench at all he’s just a sixth starter, and I don’t think he is good enough to have that role on a “contender”.

With today’s updates, all stat are among NBA centers
Horford is the # 22 scoring center
1.5 turnovers vs 0.4 for steals
# 9 rebounds
#23 block shot
yet only 5 centers in the nba are getting to play more minutes than all.

I don’t think it’s really fair to bust on Al. He’s playing out of position, and the (semi-realistic) alternatives are Zaza, Collins, or playing Josh at the 5, none of which appeal to me very much. Joe, Jamal, and Woodson on the other hand make the same dumb, correctable mistakes over and over again.

Its to the point where anything Bibby and Marvin gives us is a surprise. They have been so bad that I don’t expect much from them anyway. Teague once again plays well only not to play in the second half. Great development there Woodrow. Woodrow is trying to get as many wins as he can so the bench will be shortened. So it wont be shocking if guys are tired around playoff time.

cp,
Hawks have been very fortunate when it comes to injuries. Even the Bucks have been bit by the injury bug. They lost Redd for the year, and I think even Bogut missed some time. Miami has been playing without Wade, Bosh has missed time for Toronto, and the list goes on.
I just hope it doesnt come back to bite the Hawks, because imagine if one of our players gets hurt the last couple games of the season, or the first game in the playoffs.
We would not know what to do, because we haven’t faced that kind of adversity all year.

After breaking the gm down, here’s what I came up with. We’re at home and playing the front end of a back to back, and had to go into overtime to win. Here are the mins Woody forced his top 6 players to log. JSmith-46:14, MWilliams-40:15, AHorford-38:33, JJ-43:33, JCrawford-31:36 and MBibby-23.27. Of the 4 bench players other than Crawford that played, Zaza-14:22(5pts), MEvans-14:10(6pts), JTeague-7:10(4pts)either matched or exceeded MBibby’s pt total, and JoSmith played scored 3pts in only 5:40mins.
As long as our DUMB “A” HC keeps holding JTeague back, while giving Bibby’s nonproductive OFF and nonexistent DEF extended mins, we’ll continue struggling on OFF/DEF, especially down the stretch. ALTHOUGH WOODSON IS OFFICIALLY THE HC OF THE ATLANTA HAWKS, HE’S COACHING THE TEAM WITH THE MENTALITY AND APPROACH OF AN ASSISTANT COACH. ONLY A HC WITH AN ASSISTANT COACH’S MENTALITY WOULD BE STUPID ENOUGH TO PUBLICALLY STATE HE DOESN’T CARE ABOUT OFF, ESPECIALLY WHEN HIS TEAM IS HAVING OFF PROBLEMS.
Does anybody think we would have managed to take the gm into overtime if Skiles had played a zone against us down the stretch? JUST A THOUGHT.

Once again Truth-serum (Just Win Baby) is outright LYING about Horford.
Here’s some reality:
Horford: 10th in scoring among centers (not 22nd)
.74 steals per game (not 0.4)
Tied for 6th in rebounds among centers (not 9th)
17th in blocked shots among centers (not 23rd)
All of the above can be fact checked at: http://www.nba.com/statistics/player/

SAUTEE-are you actually expecting an ANAL MINDED MORON like TRUTH SERUM, who’s sole purpose is to belittle AHorford to further his own agenda, to be honest about his accomplishments? I’ll bet this MORON will have difficultly accepting the fact that Horford outplayed ABogat tonight. Coming into this gm, Bogat was one of the NBA’s hottest players, averaging 20PPG and 14.5RPG over their 6gm win streak, and his seasonal averages are 16PPG and 10.5+RPG. Well, AHorford held him to 14pts and 9 rebounds, while scoring 17pts and grabbing 10rebounds.
UNDERSIZED, PLAYING OUT OF POSITION, NATURAL PF AHORFORD DID SOMETHING NO OTHER BIG HAS BEEN ABLE TO DO OVER THE LAST 6GMS, AND THAT’S HOLD THE NBS’s HOTTEST BIG MAN UNDER HIS SEASONAL AVERAGES, WHILE SURPASSING HIS OWN SEASONAL AVERAGES AGAINST HIM. HAVING A BIG DOMINANT CENTER CERTAINLY DIDN’T HELP THE BUCKS WIN TONIGHT, DID IT ANAL MINDED MORON(ALIAS TRUTH SERUM, SYBIL).

the reason sund did not sign stackhouse is because he gave woody what he wanted, and yet still,he is playing the freak outta these players and come playoffs time, they will have no legs..

mo evans had a good game, and when he called for him to come back into the game,mo took his time and thats when u saw him say to mo,”come on come on”!..then woody started talking crap to mo and mo just tuned him out and turned his head..

O’brien, woody asked for more scoring off the bench and vets..and thats what he got..we had a draft pick in the 1st and Sund saw a need for a PG,(which i don’t blame him for getting),but our coach does not have the know how or patience to work with PG’S at all..
Sund might blame both woody and the asg..woody for not working with him on the talent that he brought in with what he had to work with the salary cap and all..and sund may also blame the asg for tying his hands and keeping woody and not get the players he wanted..
i blame woody..all the way..how can u be so backwards and not show that u can coach..that u can develope players and put together a team and do something with them..
how is woody gonna defend his resume??huh??
we got better every year despite his coaching..
why do u think that j-chills said no??
the golden state game showed us that teague, horford, smoove, crawford and moe evans would benefit this team to RUN,RUN,RUN!!

I don’t think either opinion is right or wrong, just interesting how expectations change over time. I think that the problems that occurred tonight are not new issues. Woodson doesn’t use his bench enough, except for Crawford, who he plays too much. Joe settles for jumpers too much. None of this matters too much now. The playoffs will prove if the Hawks are in a 4-team top tier of Eastern Conference teams (optimistic outlook) or the best non-contending team in the East (pessimistic). A frustrating win against the Bucks in February doesn’t change that picture ultimately.
Something of a side note, but I can’t help but ask this question. Do you think that the Hawks made such a stink about going after Big Z because they knew there was no chance he would go anywhere except back to Cleveland, so it would make Sund/ASG look like they were trying to spend money to upgrade for the playoffs? If the Hawks were willing to use their MLE on Z (who is largely washed up and would have to be taught a completely new system), why wouldn’t they have used that money on better talent (Ramon Sessions and Nate Robinson come immediately to mind) during the previous off-season? Just seems really hard to believe that ownership really thinks Big Z is the missing piece to the puzzle.

The NBA is such a joke of a league anyway. You trade a guy away to a team that releases him just so he can end up re-signing in a month with the team that traded him is absolute b.s. If it helps LeBron the NBA will never change it. Also, if you get within 5 feet of LeBron you get called for a foul. The NBA refs are the worst in all of pro sports. The stars of the NBA today, i.e. Dwayne Wade, LeBron James, Dwight Howard and even Kobe are good, but they couldn’t hold the jock straps of players like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Dominique Wilkins, and the rest of those players who helped rebuild the league in the 80’s.

PATRICK-where have you been when we’ve lost to the worst teams in the NBA, or teams missing several keys players, and at home no less? We definitely added more talent, size and experience to our bench. We’ve also avoided injuries, unlike last yr, and even though we’ve defeated Boston 4 times, and they’ve had to deal with key injuries, we’re struggling to stay even with them for 3rd place in the East. We’ve played poorly and inconsistently over the last 32-33gms, struggled to win at home and been unable to defeat the 2 teams we’ll have to defeat if we expect to better last yrs playoff results.
The hottest team in the NBA also had 2 players recently add to the roster, Salmons and Stackhouse, and those 2 players gave us fits. They victimized us early by taking advantage of Woody’s beloved switching DEF by using pick and roll to isolate Bibby on one of their Bigs. At least Woodson had the sense to get Bibby out of the gm and didn’t play him much down the stretch.
And for those wondering and/or complaining about JJ not attacking the basket, remember, because of Bibby’s inability to defend, JJ had to play the much quicker and faster PG that Bibby couldn’t play, and he played 45:33mins. HOW IN THE HELL CAN YOU ATTACK THE BASKET WHEN HE WAS EXHAUSTED BECAUSE HIS DUMB “A” HC WOULDN’T GIVE HIM A REST? THANK GOD FOR HALFTIME.
