Stephen Curry and the Warriors took one from Hawks. (NBA.com Photo)
Oakland– That’s two games in a row where an all-systems failure led to a dispiriting loss for the Hawks. Same scene after each one, too: J.J. sitting dejectedly at his locker, still in uniform while his teammates hit the showers.
– Not hard to figure why he was bummed about this one. The Hawks did so much right to build an 18-point lead, then blew it by doing everything wrong.
– “We were too comfortable,” Al said. “We thought we could just let them make their run and come back and we would still win.”
– Instead the Warriors took it from them. They had just eight healthy bodies and probably no more than two players on the court who could crack the Hawks’ rotation. Yet they were poised while the Hawks fell apart.
– “We just failed to execute coming down the stretch,” Woody said. “We had a comfortable lead and we stopped doing the things that got us the lead. Defensively, we just shut down.”
– “We definitely stopped playing D,” Jamal said.
– They still had their chances to win. It was tied at 104-104 when Al missed a jumper and it went out of bounds off the Warriors. But Jamal was called for a technical foul, and the Warriors made the free throw for a 105-104 lead.
– “I thought I got pushed under the basket,” Jamal said. “He (the official) didn’t think so. I voiced my frustration and got the technical.”
– Crawford had a chance to make amends when he was wide open for a corner 3-pointer on a pass from J.J. He missed, the Warriors rebounded and Ellis made two free throws for a 107-104 lead.
– The last play for the Hawks: Smoove for a 3-point miss. Huh?
– For the second straight game, the offense stalled in the fourth quarter. Too much standing around and not enough ball movement. “I’ve got to get us out of that,” Woody said. “We are isolating too much now. I’ve got to get more movement, more ball screens, give the ‘bigs’ a chance to make plays.”
– Al is all for that. “The first three quarters we were great. We were unselfish and moving the ball. In the fourth quarter we got very stagnant. We can’t keep letting that happen. It happened early in the year, we fixed it, and now we can’t let it happen again down the stretch when the games are so important.”
– The fourth quarter Iso-Joe count: missed a shot that went off the rim and out of bounds; got fouled and made both free throws; made a 29-foot 3-pointer; missed a leaning jumper on the baseline that Smoove rebounded; and passed out to Jamal for that missed 3-pointer. That’s the most Iso-Joe plays in the fourth since I started keeping count.
– Rookie Stephen Curry ran circles around the Hawks, who never really figured out how to stop him from getting into the lane coming off picks. When they did slow him that way, he made shots.
– “He reminds me of his daddy (Del Curry) except he’s a better pick-and-roll player,” Woody said before the game. “And he’s got a jumpshot. That’s a tough combination.”
– The Hawks now head to Utah, where they’ve lost 15 straight, trying to get a split on the four-game trip. They couldn’t close out the Suns when Woody wouldn’t use his bench, and everyone had a hand in this debacle. “It’s a tough loss,” Woody said. “We are trying to stay at the top of the division. We are trying to stay .500 or better on the road, and now we have slipped under .500. We have some ground to make up.”
– I’m out, Hawks fans.

I just looked at the box score from Cavs/Magic. Howard played 44 minutes. If Howard is able to play more than 36 minutes (because he isn’t in foul trouble) against the Cavs in the playoffs, Lebron is walking off the floor ticked off again this year. It seems to me that they are paying Shaq over $20M not to out-play Howard, but to have Howard on the bench in foul trouble. Shaq shot 90% from the field but he still lost the battle of mega-bigs. And if Vince Carter can keep his head straight… oh boy.
(I was one who thought the Vince trade was a great one for the Magic but I think they do miss Hedo this season. But they still have time to form their chemistry and it feels like they are finding their groove now).

I don’t think you kill Josh for taking that last 3. He was way beyond frustrated at that point and it seems that he lost some of that composure that he has worked so hard to maintain this season. Still, it doesn’t excuse the shot, but I’m not going to kill him for it. Actually, he had a heck of a game for the most part…besides, Woodson is the problem here, not Josh.

vava74- No one is blaming Marvin for the loss last night- The reason we’re concerned is that he’s just not producing and really hasn’t since we were 19-6.
Someone please pull Bibby to the side and tell him no one says he doesn’t have heart- but that his legs are gone, and his best days are behind him- and that he should take on another role for the good of the team by coming off the bench……
It wouldn’t surprise me if JJ doesn’t leave after this season (if we don’t make it to the EC finals). How many more games will he have to witness losing to mediocre/teams not better than us to convince him?

Woody has said he doesnt give a s#*t about offense. But these are some of the Hawks 4th quarter scoring output this season.
Date, Opponent, Hawks points SCORED in the 4th quarter:
11/6, Bobcats, 14 pts
11/26, Magic, 11 points
12/5, Mavericks, 16 points
12/29, Cavs, 10 points
12/30, Cavs, 16 points
01/04, Miami, 17 points,
01/27, Spurs, 16 points,
02/10, Miami, 12 points
02/19, Suns, 14 points,
02/21, Warriors, 14 points.
I’m sure if I dug further, I could find other quarters (not just the 4th) where the Hawks have struggled to score the ball. But it is magnified in the 4th.
That’s unacceptable from a team that wants to win their division and be a #2 seed. Players and coaches need to get their act together. If the Hawks lose tonight, the Raptors could be 3 games behind us in the loss column. 3 games!

Bibby is clearly having a horrendous year, there is no way to deny that fact. But, consider this. If Teague averages 10 points and 5 assists in 24 minutes and Bibby averages 10 points and 5 assists in 24 minutes, would those two have equal importance to their teammates? Teague, most would assume, would be a better defender on the other end of the court. But IMO, Bibby would give the team a swagger that Teague can’t provide. During most of the playoffs last season, we moaned about missing that alpha male, the guy who gets in the face of his teammates and rallies the troops. All elite teams have that guy… the only voice CAN’T be the coach, you have to have a peer to do some of the “on-court coaching”. We only have one guy who is ready now to be that leader on the floor, Bibby. Horford may get there (I’d love for him to be there yesterday but I don’t think that is realistic). Joe would have to have a personality transplant. Smith? Never mind. So the reason I believe that we HAVE to give Bibby time to work his way out of this 2 month-long funk is because when the playoffs come around and we’re facing adversity (like last night), we need Bibby to provide the leadership that Teague and others cannot. Again, all things being equal, Bibby provides an important intangible that is essential for playoff success.
If you believe that Teague “can do what Bibby has been doing” then I would ask if you believe in peer leadership and who do you expect to knock heads when there is a need for heads to be knocked. We all know that most teams have that head-knocker… Billups, Kobe, KG, Jameer, Lebron, etc. And in several cases, it’s NOT the best or highest paid guy… anyone think Melo is Denver’s leader and not Billups? Anyone think Rashard Lewis, Vince Carter or Howard are the head knockers in Orlando? Watch Orlando in a tight game and it is easy to see that Jameer is the straw in that team’s drink. KG may not be as productive on the court but he is clearly his team’s emotional leader.
Bibby cuts across the previous “camps” on this team… Joe and the vets and Josh and the young guys. He’s the bridge. Somehow, that bridge needs to be fixed quick and fast or this thing will come tumbling down.

I think that they need to get rid of Bibby. Most likely, they need to trade his ass away, probably to the Bulls and try to get Acie Law back (Whom they never really used). Their also gonna need a real defensive stopper, like, maybe a Tayshaun kinda guy. But of course the Pistons won’t even make that kinda trade.
Hawks need to keep: Al Horford, Josh Smith, Joe Johnson, Mo Evans, Jeff Teague, Joe Smith, Jamal Crawford, Mario West, Randolph Morris
Hawks need to dump: Mike Bibby, Marvin Williams, Zaza Pachulia (or in this case whoever we extended in a deal last summer needs to be dumped) and Jason Collins (havent a clue why we signed him)
Get a Acie Law, a upgrade a Center instead of having Pachulia and Collins, and a better defensive player other than Marvin Williams. Best yet, trade Pachulia and Marvin next summer and get Carl Landry and Joey Dorsey from the Kings. That’d be a good trade. And also trade Mike Bibby to get Acie Law, Joe Alexander, and James Johnson away from the Bulls. Basically your trading away 2 guys for A guy, and trading some dumbass PG for 3 future guys. Its worth it.
Rotation after moves next summer:
C- Al Horford
PF- Josh Smith
SF- Mo Evans
SG- Joe Johnson
PG- Jeff Teague
Bench:
1. Jamal Crawford G
2. Carl Landry (Basically 2 6th men of the year from this season)C
3. Mario West (We need to use him more)G/F
4. Randolph Morris F
5. Acie Law PG
6. Joey Dorsey F
7. Joe Smith F/C

Astro,
I think you are missing the point. Many people around here are blind and do not give Woody any credit.
I DO, however, I also see clearly that his coaching is worsening as the games go by and that he is basically scared and unwilling/unable to make any variations to his ultra basic game plan and is getting less and less “adventurous”.
You should also know that OTHER TEAMS SCOUT the Hawks and as the games go by, there is more information available on how to beat the Hawks.
In order to avoid this, we need to evolve and adapt to the strategies which are devised by our adversaries.
Every single time that our opponents create some sort of miss match exploiting our weaknesses, Woody just rolls over and fails to grasp what to do.
Yesterday, apart from the officiating which was a MAJOR factors, Woody failed to react to Nelson’s “big” line up when he went with Biedrins and Hunter at the same time.
For most of the game we had a SIZE ADVANTAGE which in the 3rd period gave its results, however, when Nelson went with Biedrins (6′11”) and Hunter (6′11”) our size advantage disappeared and our interior game was debilitated (with the help of the refs, I must point out again).
Remember, Al is 6′10” and Josh 6′9”.
Woody should have gone EXTRA BIG and pound the inside and REMOVE Bibby who could not keep up with GS’s speedsters. Right now, he does not guard, drive or shoot… Why he is playing? Give him a rest and let him stay in ATL working out with a conditioning coach for 2 weeks!!!!
If Woody had gone with Joe Smith/Zaza/Collins (or even RandMo) plus Al and Josh, GS would not have an answer and the refs would not be able to compensate.
And for the ones distrusting RandMo, Chris Hunter, a rookie out of the NBDL averaging 3,2ppg and 2reb got 12 POINTS against us!!!!
Also, to have JJ carrying the defensive and the offensive loads (defending Curry – a tough assignment beyond his ability*), even when he is playing well, is bound to end up with him exhausted and lost.
* JJ can defend bulkier PG like Deron Williams, but has trouble against lighter and quicker players.
To put him defending the Nates, Currys, Pauls and the Parkers of the league is an IDIOCY.

Woodson sucks!!! Jeff Teague needs to start and bring Bibby off the bench to run with the 2nd unit. It will help his game out going against other team reserves. Additionally why sign Mario West as our defensive specialist if were not going to play him when our guards were having trouble stopping Golden States hot backcourt? Lastly yall need to get off of Josh Smith he had a double double and changed blocked many of Golden States shots…Jamal should have taken the 3 when he caught the ball off the inbound pass instead he tried to drive in and kick the ball back out which caused Josh to get the ball on the perimeter. Not Josh’s fault!!! Marvin should be utilized off the bench…I would start this line up Teague-pg, Joe-sg, Josh-sf, Al-pf, Zaza C 1st Reserves Jamal, Marvin, Bibby, MO, and Joe Smith. Mario West is the wild card player you use anytime defense can not stop our opposing teams backcourt like the Golden State game or the San Antonio game when Tony Parker and George Hill was killing us! I will be sitting directly behind the Hawks bench on WEds and im gonna help Mike Woodson coach this team trust he will be hearing from me all game as well as the players when they do good and bad!!!!

I was pissed at Josh Smith at first but then I realized he simply was taking a desperation shot. He didn’t realize the team had more time. But despite his bad decision and constant missed shots in the 4th, he did have 17 rebounds and a a few back to back rebounds to even give us a chance in our pitiful 4th quarter performance. 14 17 7 are good numbers but Jamal Crawford picked up a technical with the game tied, you dont give a tech in that situation and you don’t take one either. I posted this comment on my twitter and I want to see if my Hawk fans agree

@ Melvin,
For those 10 games, the Hawks went 1-9.
AJ,
I know its only a sample. But the point I’m trying to make is that the Hawks 4th quarter scoring has been a problem too often this year, and as a team, they need to figure out what the problem is, and how to fix it (especially when the defense isn’t there).
Games get closer and tighter in March, as teams know your tendencies, and we must be able to adjust. And I hope you’re right about Bibby. My only concern is that his “leadership and intangibles” will not be enough to overcome his on court struggles if he does not turn it around soon.
@ MC,
Looking at the nimbers, maybe you could do an article about the Hawks’ 4th quarter scoring woes.
Rick Sund has said he only looks at the loss column. Well, the Hawks are 4 games in front of the Raptors in the loss column, with plenty of games to go.

Vava, I’m not smart enough to know when a team is executing the desired strategy and when they are not. I do NOT believe that what we see on the floor for 48 minutes is a team executing the coach’s strategy. So I don’t know when they are deviating (which is a mistake by the players) or when they are executing a poor strategy (which is the mistake of the coach). It’s like an interception in American football…. is it the QB who threw to the wrong spot or the receiver who ran the wrong route or the offensive coordinator who called the wrong play? I saw them pound the ball in the 3rd quarter AND play great defense. Then, I saw them return to the playground form of basketball (on both ends of the floor) and lose. I suspect that Woody may have reminded them of what worked in the 3rd quarter (seemingly, he got them to use the desired strategy during halftime) but I can’t say for sure. I likewise can’t say for sure that he asked Jamal to draw a technical foul or Josh to shoot with 6 seconds left, but I suspect that he did not request either of those poor choices from veterans.
IMO, the best reason to hire a new coach in the summer is because Woody’s voice has become background noise. Most coaches lose their power after 4-5 seasons. And without any other player to verbalize “the right way to play a game” Woody;s voice is the one and only voice herad. That must be a problem. Byron Scott was fired in his last two jobs not because he forgot how to coach but because his players started to tune him out. That may be happening here. And if so, Sund needs to go and hire a new coach (one not named PJ Carlesimo or Bob Hill).
Granddad, any chucker selected by coaches to play in four consecutive ASGs is the kind of chucker I want on my team.

I knew the Hawks were going to lose the game last night. The Hawks did the same thing against Phoenix. Played DOWN to the level of their opponent. The Phoenix and Golden state games are two games the Hawks could and should have won. Had they won them they would have kept pace with Orlando. What does Orlando do over the weekend. Show why they are a legitimate threat to win the NBA title. They beat the Cavs who have now lost three straight games. The Hawks ALWAYS lose games they should win and that is why they will never be more than a fluke. They will never win an nba title as long as Woody is their coach. Woody doesnt care whether the Hawks win and neither do the Hawks. The Hawks played lethargic against the warriers because they thought they could coast to a win. The Hawks could have opened up a 30-point lead against the warriers and put them away, but they didnt. Its nothing but PURE EMBARRASSMENT to lose to a team like Golden State who plays no defense and are sitting at 30 games UNDER .500. Still the Hawks couldnt beat them. When the Hawks play like they played last night, they cant beat anyone. One other point. When will Jamal Crawford be put into the starting lineup where he belongs and when will Marvin Williams be kicked off the team.

Astro,
I respect your contributions to the blog a great deal but you ducked the facts:
Woody should have made changes to the line up and adapt it to what GS brought to the table.
Nelson changed his line up to match our interior force and that change produced results.
Woody did nothing.
Let’s work with a simple analogy:
Imagine that you are playing a Role Play Game like for instance Final Fantasy (I only played a RPG on PS One but most guys following should get me on this).
There is a variety of characters which you can control in this type of game and each character has different weapons and specific strategies, strengths and weaknesses.
Depending on the adversary on a given battle, you change from one winning strategy/weapons to another, or change your personnel to fit the adversary.
So, if you have a character that uses ice to kill adversaries, that character will be effective against adversaries which are sensitive to ice but not against adversaries which use fire.
The same happens with BBall:
Woody was winning the 3rd quarter round since our inside combo of Al and Josh was favorably matched up against the GS’ line up which was playing at that time.
However, when Nelson changed his line up and went “big” (?!) that same strategy stopped working.
It was up to Woody to “read” this and change his personnel and his strategy accordingly, something that he failed to do DRAMATICALLY.

AJ,
Agreed. Its hard to tell who to blame for the scoring droughts. Is it players not executing, or is it coaching. Its probably a combination of both.
Woody has been here 6 seasons, and he has done a good job bringing the Hawks where they are. But I’m starting to wonder if we need a new dominant voice (coach or player) to help get us over the hump and take that next step.
Denver got Chauncey, and that was their missing piece. I dont know if our missing piece is a new coach, or a leader on the court who demands respect while producing. Maybe as a team (players and coaches), we’ve been doing the same thing for so long, we’ve gotten complacent.

Vava, I think that is a tough call. If you stay “big” then you gamble that the NBDL players would lose their effectiveness. If you go “small”, then you prompt Nellie to go back to Monta Ellis earlier in the 4th quarter. So would you rather lose to (sorry, I don;t remember the “big” guys who were playing well) or Monta Ellis? Sometimes, you can choose the right strategy and still lose… especially if uncharacteristic things happen like Jamal gets a tech and Josh shoots a 3-ball with 6 seconds left.
I definitely agree that both the Warriors and Suns have been able to take away Horford too easily in the 4th quarter. The Suns effectively stopped easy entry passes into Al… and the Warriors were able to figure out how to defend our bigs also. I’m sure that is a combination of not having enough diverse ways to get those guys the ball (Woody’s fault) and the bigs not having enough experience to recognize the new defense and adjust accordingly (inexperience). Thankfully, we have 25+ games to work on those issues. I’m not of the opinion that this team needs to peak now, so I won’t join many in full panic mode.
