Phoenix– There’s no doubt the Hawks caught a break on Wednesday when the Clippers traded away half their team and Baron Davis decided his back was too sore to play. Props to the Hawks for handling their business, but they will get no such break tonight.
After what seemed like months of speculation, the Suns didn’t trade Amar’e Stoudemire before the deadline. He talked with Suns brass over dinner last night and says he has no hard feelings.
So the Suns are at full strength except for Leandro Barbosa (wrist). They are also trying to hang onto a playoff spot in the Western Conference. No doubt they also remember this (dang that was my first game as beat guy and it seems like a year ago.)
The Hawks have to know what’s coming.
“We can’t come in here thinking it’s going to be like it was the other night,” Woody said.
– The Hawks want Zydrunas Ilgauskas. A lot still has to fall in place for that to happen. First, Ilgauskas has to be bought out. He’s not playing for the Wizards tonight, a sign that he will get his wish.
Once that happens, Z (don’t make me spell it anymore) somehow has to decide he doesn’t want to return to the Cavaliers, who drafted him 14 years ago and are tops in the Eastern Conference. If Z surprises everyone and passes on the Cavs, he then has to decide he wants to play for the Hawks.
And if that happens, it will mean less playing time for the Hawks’ current Z, Zaza. He said he wants burn like all guys do but he’s a pro and so he’d be cool with the another Z around.
“I know ‘Z’ personally,” Zaza said. “He’s a great guy, a good person. Everyone knows what he can do. He’s been in the league a long time. If the (Hawks) organization thinks that’s the right thing and it will help us, that’s fine with me.”
– More ASG drama this week. The AJC’s Kristi E. Schwartz reports that Bruce Levenson thinks Steve Belkin is evil. And Belkin must pay $2 million by Thursday to keep his stake in ASG, which he plans to do.
The most interesting part to me, because I’m not into drama, is that Schwartz reports “court documents say the Hawks and Thrashers have lost more than $174 million since the 2002-03 season, including $50 million in the past two years alone.”
That’s something to remember if the Hawks must decide whether to pay J.J. max money this summer.
– Talk amongst yourselves, Hawks fans.

uh oh. I get nervous when I see the red unis.
@MC…the Mr. Evil link is a year old. Not that he’s nicer now, just not new.
I think Belkin needs to find someone to take his stake before he has to pony up the other $23.8 mil. The value of these teams isn’t on the rise and the Hawks are struggling to draw even in a good season.
That $2 mil could make him the king of an obscure sport. He could be Mr. Curling USA for that type of coin. Might even get his face on the unis

The pick-and-roll requires tons of repetition in practice to perfect for every pair that runs it. Now, some coaches (like, all the ones that win titles) might think this a play worth the effort. Because your opinion is based on nothing but the fact that you like Channing Frye (or at least you haven’t cited a single reason why he’d come here over Phoenix). Mine is based on the realities of Frye’s entire life and the role that Phoenix could offer him. It bugs me that you keep bringing it up without offering any explanation as to why Frye would have ever considered moving across the country to take on a smaller role with the Hawks when his hometown team was offering him a shot at the starting spot.

Nice. Great charge by Joe and Josh to finish off the half and retake a skinny lead.
Good support off the bench by Joe Smith. We needed that from him with Horford in foul trouble.
On the bad side, our bench hasn’t done us much good overall, and with the exception of JJ (who is playing like the star that he is) and some nice pick and roll dimes from Bibby, our backcourt isn’t getting much of anything done. Apparently Phoenix remembers Jamal Crawford quite well, but they can’t cover both him and Joe.
That, and we need to ramp up our efforts on the glass.

I know Horford had foul trouble, but Phoenix is really a poor rebounding team. There’s no reason why the Hawks should be getting out-rebounded by them. I realize the Hawks are leading, but they can’t play in the 2nd half like they did in the 1st and expect to win. If they can control the glass and stay with their man on defense they can pull this out.

True. Of course, our efficiency isn’t looking so good at the moment. We could use some more of that pick and roll, and I don’t care whether it’s the players not doing it or the coach not calling for it. We need it. Hard to win on the road while shooting 39% from the field, let alone against a good team, unless you are simply overpowering the other team with your defense. Needless to say, we aren’t doing the latter, which makes the former rather difficult.

To me it’s not about single-covering Howard. It’s about stopping all those shooters when he starts going off. Howard doesn’t beat teams. His teammates do. Dude rarely gets 30 points, and often doesn’t get that close. He’ll get plenty of rebounds and block lots of shots.
But he can also get into foul trouble. We can’t cover him one on one and not have him post wonderful stats. The question is, can we stop the penetrators and shooters? That’s what Dallas is doing, and it’s why Washington stopped them twice this year.

Nire,
It’s my opinion; it doesn’t have to base on anything for your approval. Anyway, I said in the past maybe if the Hawks had made him a better offer , he would have sign here instead of Phx. Keep in mind that he’s coming off a rookie contract so it’s not like he made tons of millions dollars prior to him signing with Phx. So maybe money would have been a contributing factor to where he signed. What if two million from his hometown team was the best (or only) offer at the time? Did you ever thought about that. Heck, you mention you left ATL for various reasons, so maybe he wouldn’t mind leaving his hometown to work in his career just like you.
Nire you seem to be a smart guy but sometimes you need to consider others opinions and views. Sometimes you only see things your way but what if it’s the other way?

AJ, I have no problem with the Hawks using their standard combination of Horford/Zaza/Joe Smith to single cover Dwight. The key bit of information there is that while Haywood might play Dwight Howard well one on one, Dwight tonight is still getting his statistically. His 27 points, 16 boards, and 5 blocks today are all well above his season averages.
I am trying to point out that Dwight’s success doesn’t necessarily equate to the success of the Magic. The key to beating them is clamping down on everyone else. The rest of the Magic are having mediocre games today, particularly their bench, which contributed nothing. JJ Redick, who burned the Hawks last time these two teams played, has zero points. The key to stopping them is not allowing people like him to get hot from the outside, and that has absolutely nothing to do with how well Horford or Zaza matches up on Howard.

There. It took you six months to say that. Because no, you did NOT mention any of that stuff before.
I respect people when they give an opinion and provide a basis for it. You don’t need my “approval” for anything, just like I don’t need your approval to press you for your reasoning. And I don’t need your approval to call you out when you fail to provide it.
I do consider others’ opinions and views. Hell, I do it for a living because I work for a judge. It’s my job to detect, expose, and weed out baseless opinions. I don’t turn off that mentality when I go home, which is why I generally don’t respect a person’s opinion if he doesn’t support it with anything.

By the way, for those of you who are still in the camp that says playing Teague is not important, just look at tape of Goran Dragic at the beginning of last year compared to where he is now. Last November I would have said he can’t even start in Europe. Now people are suggesting he’s better than our starting point guard (not saying I agree, but the point is he’s good). That kind of improvement only occurs with playing time. Dragic started out getting DNP-CDs and garbage time minutes early last year, but as the year went along they played him more, and that resulted in building his confidence. Teague’s minutes, on the other hand, have gone in the opposite direction.

I like McGuire, he’s a very strong defender who would have been a huge upgrade over Mo in terms of defending bigger SFs behind Marvin. And he is also a great rebounder at the SF position.
Me too JOE. He never got too much of a shot. I think his weakness from my personal observation was being a little slow a-foot, and not particularly quick hands. But a solid role player in my book. His board work could be first class.
But tonight I don’t miss him at all. Or ILGAUSKAS, GOODEN, JAMISON, BUTLER, STEVENSON or HAYWOOD.
WIZ bamboozle the NUGGETS with a line-up the entire fourth of JAMES SINGLETON, JOSH HOWARD, AL THORNTON, NICK YOUNG and EARL BOYKINS. The energy and defense were tremendous. “No matter how poorly he picks up on strategies, throw him out there to facilitate the offense?”
No, throw him out there so he can learn from his mistakes and improve. Like I’ve pointed out before, good teams — even championship teams — do this all the time and live with the rookie mistakes so that it will benefit them in the future. Rajon Rondo, Ty Lawson, Goran Dragic, George Hill, JJ Barea… all of these players got steadily increasing playing time early in their careers on good teams and have shown marked improvement, without costing their teams victories. And I only named point guards. I didn’t even get to the other positions.
Of course Teague is going to make mistakes if he plays. But the status quo on Teague camp is somehow unwilling to tolerate mistakes by Teague and yet completely willing to tolerate multiple mistakes by Bibby and Crawford. That part makes no sense to me. In three years Teague is the most likely player to remain on this roster.

On the money RAY. They would play HOWARD straight up with HAYWOOD until SUPERMAN would score twice in a row, then the defense would rotate over in help defense until HOWARD would become frustrated, usually after two or three plays in succession. The WIZ would then revert to their normal defense and stop the penetration. This they did both games throughout. It worked to perfection.

Bob Rathbun and Dominique Wilkins keep wondering how the Suns are pulling away without Nash and Amare on the floor. The answer is easy — they are winning on effort and smarts, not on skill. Rebounding and turnovers (like that last atrocity by Josh Smith) have absolutely killed the Hawks in this game. Dragic, Dudley, Amundson, etc. are the ones winning this game for the Suns.
On a day the Magic lost, for the Hawks to crash and burn like this in a very winnable game is just pathetic.

No, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Bobcats pulled a 4-5 upset if the seeds shook out that way.
That’s why these games are so important. Losing winnable games costs you seeding. If the Hawks end up losing the division by 1 game and end up either getting upset in Round 1 or drawing the Cavs in Round 2, they can look back on games like this and blame themselves.

Newsflash: Larry Hughes may be brought out of his contract to become a free agent. Who believes he could be a great addition to the Hawks? I think he could take the role as a replacement for both guard slots, even allowing Joe to slide to the three position. I also think he played with Jamal in the past. Someone help me on this. But who’s for starting a movement to bring him in if he is let go by the Kings?

This is what kills me about the Hawks. Of course you’re going to lose sometimes, but it’s one thing to lose a game in which you didnt really play all that poorly, but the other team just simply out executed you…and it’s another thing to just look so completely lost and lacking effort. A .500 team shouldnt look like that often, let alone one fighting for a division.
The only thing that looks great in these 4th quarter meltdowns is that Crawford displays that he has the rocks and ability to knockdown key, momentum changing shots MUCH more efficiently than anyone else on the team.

Najeh, if Woody is on a one year contract and doesn’t play the rookie whom his boss drafted and is holding him down for no other reason than stubbornness, then Woody is requesting that his boss not renew his contract in a few months. That’s my theory. It is borne out of “self-preservation” and a belief that Sund and his assistants have a view into what happens at practice. Naturally, I could be wrong. But given the history of the other guards who have come and gone, I am willing to stand by my theory.
The notion that all plants grow at the same rate with the same amount of water and sun is wrong. Maybe Teague needs to learn some basic basketball skills in practice first. Heaven knows, that was true of Josh Smith, but we didn’t have the luxury of having him sit. So instead, he took shots that he had less than a 30% chance of hitting and we endured it all. We read articles this year where he admits that he had no concept of time and situation in his first few years in the league and yet he was on the court. Learning? Sure, but we had nothing to lose at the time and no depth to provide a different option. I’m thrilled that we now have enough depth that we can nurture a guy at practice without rewarding him for bad habits demonstrated at practice.
I don’t disagree that we need better PG play, I just don’t make that statement and assume that Teague is the answer. Given Woody’s contract situation, I’m guessing he isn’t close to providing an upgrade.
We thought similar things about Acie’s development last season and Sund made his choice and Acie has now been traded twice since leaving Atlanta and is well on his way to being Kevin Ollie. Sometimes the guys who have access to the goings-on at practice know more than we do.

I don’t give a sh!t about the offense; you guys can score more than enough points to win games. The offense isn’t the problem. But you have to get stops on defense, and if you’ll listen to what we’re telling you, I promise you’ll get stops.
Well Woody, we got the stops. We held the Suns – the league’s most efficient offense – to 88 points.

Suns recover around 33% of their missed shots, Hawks only grabbed about 20% of our misses. Inability to grab offensive boards (or stop the other team from doing the same) strikes again.
While I admire players who play hurt, I almost wish that Jamal would allow his shoulder to heal if he is still banged up. And I thought the same when Al was struggling after that karate chop delivered against Houston to his hand.

MC>/strong>, any chance you can ask why Woody doesn’t seem to use 1st half performance to factor into his second half rotation? Once you’ve been around for a while, you will quickly see a pattern where player A does well off the bench (oh yeah, player A is anyone on the bench not named Jamal) on the first half but sits there for the remainder of a tight second half in his sweatsuit. Heck, if the other team makes an sdjustment that makes that player ineffective the next time out, sit him down. But at least challenge them to make that adjustment. Very frustrating to see the good guys run out of gas after someone like Joe Smith finally shows up big in the first half.

Astro,
Woody has implied that Teague has played well in practice. He said he is choosing not to play Teague because of the veterans in front of him. Not once has Woody said Teague is not ready.
And on a night when Bibby plays 39 minutes, goes 1-8 from the field, scored 6 points and 2 assists, you mean Teague would have done worse than that?
Bad night for Hawks all around. Marvin Williams, 6 pts, 2 rebounds, with only 5 shots in 34 minutes? While his opposite Grant Hill gets 16 and 5. Bibby was bad, we missed 8 FT, got outrebounded by 14, went 3-14 fom 3.
But hey, no need to worry about offense. Its all about defense, right Woody? At what point does he get concerned about our 4th quarter scoring woes?

OB, didn’t Woody say that the reason Teague wasn’t playing in Rookie game because Woody didn’t play him more? Woody says all kind of ish to make a player feel good. I don’t believe that stuff and I’m not sure that you should either. Unless you actually believe that had Teague played 15-20 minutes a game, he would have gotten the nod over Tyreke Evans or Stephen Curry.
Woody is not the type of coach to say “the rook sucks at practice”. Phil Jackson would. Larry Brown would have Teague in a corner crying on the phone to his mother. George Karl would stop talking to him altogether. But Woody that’s not Woody’s style.

If I were Woody, in the next blow-out game, I would have Teague play PG and Bibby would be the SG. And I would tell Teague to look for Bibby on every possession. Bibby needs to shoot his way out of this slump but he won’t do it in the course of a close game. He needs the freedom to hoist 5-6 shots in about 6-8 minutes of court time.

“Maybe Teague needs to learn some basic basketball skills in practice first. ”
Teague has proven in games when he has gotten playing time that he can produce, which clearly means that he does have basketball skills.
“Heaven knows, that was true of Josh Smith, but we didn’t have the luxury of having him sit. So instead, he took shots that he had less than a 30% chance of hitting and we endured it all. We read articles this year where he admits that he had no concept of time and situation in his first few years in the league and yet he was on the court.”
Why did it take Josh “years” to figure out the concepts of time and situation? Is it because he is that slow of a learner, or is it because the system (or lack thereof) in which he plays never defined a clear role for him? I don’t absolve Josh of all responsibility for his poor shot selection and decision making in years past, but a lot of that has to do with the fact that he is a jack-of-all-trades player on a team whose system never defined what he should and should not be doing on the court. Josh isn’t even the only Hawk whose development suffered because he was never given a defined role — look at what Boris Diaw did when he joined a team that had a defined offensive system that placed him in a position to play to his strengths.
“I’m thrilled that we now have enough depth that we can nurture a guy at practice without rewarding him for bad habits demonstrated at practice.”
I would buy that he is being “nurtured” if he was getting better. I would even be willing to buy it if Acie Law had improved when he was in his position. But Acie Law never improved, and Teague is not improving. As Teague’s playing time has decreased, his confidence and his overall play have worsened. Unless Teague suddenly forgot the skills that allowed him to have those productive games early in the season, the blame for that falls directly on the coaching staff.
“I don’t disagree that we need better PG play, I just don’t make that statement and assume that Teague is the answer. ”
Neither do I, but my support for playing Teague has always been with one eye towards the future, not so much because the Hawks need him now. That’s why I keep pointing out how other good teams have developed young players while winning at the same time. It is very likely that in two years, neither Bibby nor Crawford is on the roster. Would it be better for the Hawks to wait until then to play Teague and allow him to play through his mistakes when he’s getting 35 minutes a game as a starter, or would it be better for him to make his mistakes now playing 15 minutes a game off the bench as a rookie?
When you equate playing a raw young player to “rewarding bad habits”, it tells me you are not willing to put up with him making mistakes on the court. But one way or the other, he is going to make mistakes. All young players do. In fact, all young people do, regardless of their profession. Should law firms shift their case loads to their more experienced attorneys the minute one of their younger ones screws up a case? Should Microsoft deny their first-year software engineers the opportunity to write new programs the first time they create a program with a bug in it?
“We thought similar things about Acie’s development last season and Sund made his choice and Acie has now been traded twice since leaving Atlanta and is well on his way to being Kevin Ollie. Sometimes the guys who have access to the goings-on at practice know more than we do.”
Maybe he’s on his way to becoming Kevin Ollie. Maybe he’s on his way to becoming Chauncey Billups, who was traded or waived by four teams before getting a chance to prove himself as the backup point guard in Minnesota. I think it’s worth pointing out that Golden State and Charlotte, the two teams that traded Acie after the Hawks did, have coaches who are notorious for stifling the development of young players. Look at what Don Nelson is doing to Anthony Randolph. Look at what Larry Brown is doing to DJ Augustin. Both of these players have produced, and produced big-time, in games when they have gotten a chance to play, and yet neither one is allowed to develop their game further by getting consistent minutes because their respective coaches are too short-sighted or too egotistical to allow that to happen on their watch. For that matter, who the hell knows whether Darko Milicic may have become a productive NBA player if he was allowed to play as a young player as opposed to being “nurtured” on the bench.
Maybe the most convincing argument to play Teague is to look at good teams that played young players that didn’t end up panning out. Jordan Farmar’s development has stalled after his second season. Should the defending champion Lakers regret giving him a chance to play? No, because it didn’t stop them from winning a championship.
The point is that there’s very little downside to playing Teague, whereas there is a huge potential downside to not playing him. Playing Teague for 15 minutes a game now, in the worst case scenario, may result in losing one or two games. Not playing Teague now may result in shattering his confidence and squandering a draft pick. And if there is one thing all four pro sports have in common, it is that teams that squander their draft picks never put together long stretches of winning.

Najeh,
I appreciate the link on Larry Hughes to provide perspective, but I submit to you that Hughes offers us another player who can create his own offense (which is a need since we run such simple offensive sets) and can provide relief for Jamal Crawford who clearly is hurt and whose efficency is going to be a problem down the stretch if he plays hurt.
I believe Hughes has experienced enough humility that he would be appreciative of a regular chance to get minutes on the floor, particularly with a winning organization. Face it – we still need scorers – thanks to Marvin’s MIA this season – so Hughes would by far be the best alternative for what’s available
