Los Angeles– All the Hawks’ talk about refocusing after the All-Star break wouldn’t mean much if they lost this game. The Clippers were shorthanded, still spinning from recent trades and had played at Portland the night before. The Hawks were fresh, back at full strength and had a chance to start their four-game Western Conference trip in style.

– The Clippers were ripe for a beating, and the Hawks obliged. “This game was a challenge for our mental focus,” Smoove said. “We couldn’t worry about who they had playing.”

– The Clippers pushed the Hawks while losing at Philips Arena on Feb. 3 but this wasn’t the same team. Baron Davis sat out with a sore back. Marcus Camby was traded on Monday. Al Thornton and Sebastian Telfair were traded before the game on Tuesday.

Al Horford, fresh off his first All-Star appearance, went for a career-high 31 points. He was 12 of 15 from the floor as the Hawks shot 54 percent and scored 70 points in the paint. “The guys were finding me and I was getting a lot of good looks,” he said. “I was finishing plays and making them pay.”

– No one paid more than Clips forward DeAndre Jordan, who had all kinds of trouble with Horford. Al didn’t look like he needed a break over the weekend. “I had two really good practices,” he said. “I felt good coming into the game.”

– The Hawks led from seven minutes into the game until the final buzzer. “We got off to a pretty good start,” J.J said. “One thing we’ve got to get better at is jumping on teams and putting them away really fast. We’re still learning to do that but we’re getting better.”

– “We knew we really couldn’t give this team confidence early or we’d be in for a long night,” Smoove said.

– Smoove had 20 points, nine boards and seven assists. As complete games like this become more and more common it shouldn’t be lost that he’s having a great year.

Zaza was back from his hip injury and looked good while getting eight points and five rebounds in 18 minutes. He looked to have good lift in his legs, which is a good sign. Zaza said he felt pretty good, too. “I can’t say all the pain is gone but I will take this one,” he said. “I will keep an eye on it.”

Jamal came back from a shoulder injury and had 12 points and five assists. “It’s a real good start to the trip,” he said.

– When the Clippers threatened to get back in the game in the second quarter, the Hawks turned up their defensive pressure. They got six of their 16 steals in the period and held the Clippers to 18 points. “In the second quarter we came out and established the way we wanted the game to be,” J.J. said.

– The Hawks next head to Phoenix for a Friday night game. They face the Warriors on Sunday and the Jazz on Monday. Energy shouldn’t be a problem. “We are fresh,” Zaza said. “The couple of days off really helped us.”

– I’m out, Hawks fans.

Trade Marvin Williams for an actual duck to keep the bench lively and enterained on the sideline, thus, inspiring energized play through the entirety of a game. It’s a win/win situation.

Horford showed out tonight, hope he keeps it up. Bibby is becoming as useless as Mario West.

24 mins…2 pts. Marvin and Bibby have to go, trade them to the NETS just because they deserve to be on a team that is a complete laughing stock. It doesn’t matter who we get back, couldn’t be any worse.

I know we were playing the Clippers but we played great defense and it was good to see our bench play extended minutes to get real game-time minutes. I hope Woody keeps it up and our bigs continue to play big. Josh and Al were phenomenal.

Too me, the story is not that the Hawks won, but how they won. Hawks had 16 steals to Clippers’ 2. Hawks had 8 turnovers to Clippers’ 22. (Bibby had 0 tunoovers.) (Teague 4 steals in limited minutes). Clippers shot good percentage, had good rebounds and good assists. Smith and Horford had great all around games…Way to go!.

I really do think the Hawks are good enough to win the whole thing. They have to WANT IT though, more than anything. They’re not cocky, which I like, but they’re not very stable either. They need some ideas on Howard. Woody needs help making quick effective adjustments, even if they have to hire a coaching assistant to do nothing but that.

For some reason, I’m not scared of Cleveland….They ARE dominant…..but are they going to come through? .Has Cleveland ever come through? One thing I saw about Cleveland….they can when they need to run complicated plays involving everyone on offense. I would run Shaq out of the building by speeding up tempo.

This thing is still wide open….. Hawks could finish third win their first round, Orlando could be upset in the first round, leaving Hawks to eventually play Cleveland….maybe the Lakers, maybe the Nuggets.Mavs, Blazers,…OKC?

Jamal 5 assists
JJ…….2 assists
Bibby.5 assists
JT……2 assists

For just the second time this year the Big’s got more shot attemtps than the guards. Go big they did. This is how the Hawks should attempt to play every game. Their will be games JJ and Jamal will be needed to take over. But this team plays much better with with balance. 27 assists was the total. Did I mention Josh and Al had 11 assists between them? These guys look to pass. Nice to see the guards join them. Great team effort. Fun win.

Did Josh Smith officaly change his name over the break? Not once did you use his real name. I know who ‘Smoove” is but I can’t believe a journalist would write an article only using a nickname. So you write “Al Horford” instead of just “Al” when you first mention him as well as “Marcus Camby”, “Baron Davis” etc. But you never say “Josh Smith”? Incredible. To top it off you just use “ZaZa” and “JJ” as well. I know this is a blog but is this where we are going in journalism?

Before I write anything, where are all of the Al Horford haters at?

I tend to agree with most of what’s being said on the blog. We played inside out last night, without actually going back out. I know we were up by 10 for most of the game, but the lead seemed much bigger than it was simply because of the way we were scoring. We got anything we wanted. Easy bucket after easy bucket. The gaurds weren’t dominating the ball, but instead they were feeding Big Al and Smith inside. We have to continue to do that.

The bench played pretty well when on the floor as well. JT0 had his moments last night.

Overall, great win and a great start to the 2nd half of the season. I still think it’d be great if Sund could pull the trigger for another quality guy to come off the bench, but that doesn’t seem too likely – so we’re stuck with what we’ve got. But, at this point, I’m not complaining too much about that.

I believe that he has to be on their roster for 30 days before they can buy him out and then another 30 before he can sign with another team. That is if the Knicks want the cap break, which clearly they do. So, I don’t think McGrady will get bought out.

I believe even if the Hawks make a move, they are not one player away from beating Cleveland. One player might get them past Orlando though if it was for a true “Center” so Horford could play his natural position. So if the Hawks make a move….I want a Center.
As for the Braves, I am not fired up about the Damon Offer. I think McLouth will be just fine in the leadoff spot. He steals bases, doesn’t strikeout a great deal, and has the power to sort of have that Ricky Henderson threat to hit it out of the ballpark. I am not comparing him to Henderson by any means, only that he is a threat for the homerun. I’d prefer Dye in the outfield if the Braves are going to bring in another player.

Perkins (Celtics) is a better actual Center than Horford. Horford is more of a finesse player, which makes him better suited for the PF position, rather than a true Center. Horford isn’t as physical in the paint as he needs to be…. Watch Horford against taller Centers, he cannot defend them.

No Brainer!
Schultz, great subject with an easy answer. No brainer. That is if the management is serious about stepping up and competing for a championship.
Hoops, Excellent! Another no Brainer. As good a player and hard worker as Horford is, he is a power forward who cant or doesn’t play effective defense at the 5 spot. He is a liability at the basket. The key to beating the Hawks is to get to the rim on a half court set, so you can take Josh out of the equation and isolate Horford under the basket where he has been touched repeatedly. Horford cannot protect the basket from the interior and that’s exactly what a center MUST do!
We watched, J Oneal, Shaq, Camby, Stoudamire and other centers become available and made 0, zero, non, nil, nada, not at all, we made no freaking effort to get what was clearly our weakest link coming into the season and is still our most venerable spot.
Lets trade Horford for Lopez or Stoudamire and maximize our potential. Otherwise we will be having this same discussion this time next year.
Right now we are at a point where we should move on a real time basis and not wait to play catch up in the off season. That never works because every body gets better in the off season. Move while the chase is on!

Jeff…..
Tiger is the face of Golf whether he likes it or not. He is a celebrity whether he likes it or not. When you make mistakes as a celebrity you have to face the music. Stand up at the podium, set a time limit on the news conference. Read your statement and show some guts by answering a few questions so that this saga can start being put to rest.

The Hawks need a legitimate big man to compete with the Magic and now the Cavs. So, yes they need help, but just can’t afford it, or won’t move anyone they could to get what they need.

The Hawks are on their own no help in sight. They should have made a run at Gortat last year. The Hawks can still make it to the eastern conference championship, but an athletic big would get them over the hump. Woody needs to start preparing Collins.

Hawks need someone to defend Dwight Howard, a strong veteran like Kurt Thomas, just to give six hard fouls and frustrate Howard. They also really need a better, more reliable backup small forward. Marvin is up and down and Mo Evans is starting to show his age.

Jeff, surely ownership knows that the Hawks need a legit Center. Orl: Howard & Gortat, Cleveland: Shaq & Jamison, Celtics: Perkins & KG.
We are athletic but we can win a game against Orlando (and possibly Cleveland) because he lack size in the paint. What options do we have to upgrade the front court? Or are our hands tied because of Joe Johnson’s pending free agency? And Crawford’s too?

The Hawks need to move Marvin Williams to the bench and pick up a Center (5). Horford needs to move back to his natural position of the 4.

AtlSouthside

INSIDE -OUT …. 31 points for Horford against an All Star Center- Get the man more touches. Josh had a good game as well -he really fills the stat sheet night in night out -Also his passing is rediculous this year he is a really good passer -These guys will only get better -I luv it

With all that said -I tend to agree with Stephen A Smith that the hawks have a good chance to make the ECF if they face they face Boston 2nd round but Cleveland and Orlando are just to much for us- We dont have the size up front to deal with Howard,Shaq,Gortat,Varijaeo etc…

Illgauskas would be a nice pick up -the man is a dam oak tree in the middle and he takes up alot of space – I really want Mcgee from Washington, but i dont know if we have the peices to make a move.

What did I say 2 weeks ago about Marvin, for every good game he has he disappears for 3 or 4, He did absolutely nothing last night -how the hell do u go two full quarters without scoring. O i almost forgot he got his shot air mailed twice for those keeping track-

Jamison is good but Amare would have really made me a believer that the CAVS could win it all- I just dont think they hv enuff to beat LA in 7 games. Watch out for Dallas as well. Butler and Haywood will improve that team IMO
Dam it couldnt we have atleast made an offer for Haywood, Our owners are really sum glass half full types if the think joe smith and zaZa are enuff to compete with the big boiz……

Is it me or has Bibby’s shot been off dam near all year -The man is getting slower by the minute Marvin and Bibby are becoming liabilites on both ends of the floor –
I would have liked to get either Illgauskas or Haywood two huge guys to put in the middle while smoove and Horford go to work. We wont get out of the second round if we face Orlando or Cleveland -just dont have enuff size -and some of yall are dillusional if u think Joe Granddaddy Smith and ZAZA will be enuff to compete with the big boiz.

Sund should have tried to work this type deal

Uldric/Thompson for Bibby/Marvin

IMUS- I don’t think Josh will be more effective at the 3. In the NBA today, the swing position has to be able to hit that corner three. Plus, that moves Josh away from what he does best on defense which is weak side shot blocking and rebounding. Don’t get me wrong I am all for trading Marvin if we can upgrade that position, but I think we end up hurting the team with Josh at the 3.

In basketball terms it refers to the side away from the ball in reference to a guard match up Not the low post position.

Weakside – (Basketball): Definition

Weakside; This drill is designed to teach the denying of a guard to forward pass and when the ball is passed guard to guard, the drill teaches players to fall in the lane while playing weakside defense. ”

When a team is on offense in their opponents’ end of the court, the “strong” side is the side of the court where the ball is located. The “weak” side is the side of the court opposite the strong side (away from the ball). Imagine that there is a line that extends from the basket to midcourt, dividing the court into two equal parts. If a team starts their offense with the ball on the right side of the court, this is the strong side. However, as the ball gets passed, if it ends up on the left side, then that becomes the strong side. When a point guard sets up his team’s offense, his teammates run the play using both the strong side and the weak side.

I hope this helps, Ive read where people are trying to miss use this to the low post which has a different set of protocols.

I just don’t know what the heck some of you are watching. What exactly is it about Smoove’s game that makes ANYONE think he would be better at SF than PF? Putting him at SF would take him farther away from the basket, which is where he is CLEARLY most effective on BOTH ends of the floor. In addition, he is a HORRIBLE shooter, a below average perimeter defender and below average ballhandler for the SF position. He is an exceptional athlete ANYWHERE on the floor but that is the ONLY thing in his game that says SF. Putting him at SF would do to him EXACTLY what has happened to Andrei Kirilenko. He would go from being an All Star caliber player to being an overpaid guy that doesn’t fit with the rest of the team.

The reality is that both Smoove and Horford are PFs with Horford being FAR better at Center than Smoove is at SF. It’s not even close. Therefore, the team is doing EXACTLY what it should do in starting them together in the front court.

Ive read guys trying to say that Josh covers Als “weakside” and thats why Al allows alot of point under the basket. The post position is not a weakside/strong. The center plays with his back to the basket on offense or defense. Weak side only refers to the side that the ball enters the court from a guards perspective.

While I understand your point, there is no way possible Josh would be worse at the 3 than Marvin. It is utterly impossible. Marvin can’t hit the open 3 either. Josh would simply adjust his game to play the position. Real players adjust and conform. Josh has proved to me that he has too much pride and competitive spirit to be a liability on the floor wherever he plays. He can’t hit the 3, but he can penetrate and finish. Marvin can do neither.

Whats up with all you guys talking about trading Bibby. Im all for trading Marvin but not Bibby. Bibby is the perfect PG for this system which is the reason WHY WE’VE BEEN WINNING EVER SINCE WE TRADED FOR HIM, we was losing before we got him and unless we have Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Steve Nash, or Jason Kidd, we would go from being an elite team in the East to an average team in the East with Teague at the helm, Bibby is also our best three point shooter and he’s a clutch player, he’s just havent had to be clutch cause Crawford has been taking all the clutch shots for the Hawks, but he was our clutch player last yr, not Joe, when Crawford wasnt here, he was the clutch player at Sacremento, ask Kobe and Phil, when the gm is on the line Bibby can take the shot to win the gm and he’s shown it time and time again through out his career, The Hawks will not trade Bibby which is why they resigned him when Cleveland was trying to get him and he will be here until Teague is ready to take over which he is not right now.

I’m not knocking the move on either side. I just wonder what pick they delt. It was obvious AC wasn’t working and Flip’s scoring wasn’t as impt as bigs for the playoffs for the Bobcats. Chi is definitely building for the offseason.

The Hawks played well, and beat a team that they were expected to beat. Keep in mind, as stated by the Blog Miester, that the Clippers were playing without 4 of their starters on the court.

This game has to be a jump off point for the Hawks to turn up the Heat on the rest of the East. Because the Hawks didn’t make a move at the trade deadline, they have to get superior play from the guys already on the team.

It will determine how far they go this year. I think that they’re only a year away from the NBA finals. It depends on what Sund does after this year.

Are we the only team that can play pick and roll with our PF & C as well as our C & PF?

Keep the guards stationed outside the arc, and send our big small forward to the board.

You could add many more PG’s to the list that are much better than Bibby. I agree he brings intangibles like leadership, good locker room guy and a good player for Teague to learn from.

Taking care of the ball this year , he is overrated. Most possessions he just hands off to JJ and Jamal. He does not run the offense and most possessions, once he hands off, he does not even touch the ball. Our great league leading turn over stats you can attribute to the entire team doing a good job. JJ and Jamal handle it most – just keeping it real.

3 PT…….made……….%……NBA rank
Jamal……. 95………..378……48th
JJ…………..90……….366……58th
Bibby……..75………..368…….61st

At this point Bibby is not our best 3 PT shooter either in percentage or volume. The problem with Bibby is his 2 PT shot. Not to mention the fact he cannot guard anybody. He has dropped to 7th option. He need to be playing with the second unit. We need a 5th guard not named Mario.

Why sign with Atlanta only to be eliminated by Cleveland, when you can re-sign with the Cavs and win a ring? I’d say he will pass, especially since that is the only city he has ever known in the NBA and I’m sure has a home there, etc.

Why get Ilgauskas? I vote that the Hawks just go out and sign Arvydas Sabonis, I’m sure he has something left in the tank.

The Hawks don’t strike me as a very strategic team (or one with any more money to spend). No way do we go after the Big Z. He will resign with Cleveland.

Hey, Jeff, can Cleveland really re-sign Z and have him for the playoffs? I think they would have to wait 30 days since they just traded him, right?

Jeff I hope this isnt some political posturing from Sund to keep the Hawks fan base appeased. With us thinking that we… he tried, when he actually doesn’t intend to make it happen. Its like you said earlier. You can always make a deal if you want to . I agree 100%

Good reporting, keep us posted Jeff. I feel better already.

Mountain Man — Because Wizards don’t care about Ilgauskas. They’re rebuilding and just wanted the expiring contract. They’d rather buy him out for less, and I’m sure he doesn’t want to play in D.C., either.

Al would be a better small forward than Josh, Josh is a true power forward and one of the best in the game. We could trade Horford and increase our bench strength.

0% chance Ilgauskas ends up in ATL. Actually -0%. He is re-signing in CLE. He is a good friend of Cavs GM Danny Ferry. Ferry would not trade him with out knowing that Z would be coming back. Plus he has no reason to leave. This has been very carefully orchestrated for months. There is no “mix” of teams. These teams might be delusional, like you, but I assure you its not happening.

Hummm, good insight but going back to your previous statement, deals can be made. How much time would he get with Cleveland? Even less now. What would his role be with Jamison and Shaq on the front line? Hed get much more burn here and hed be right in the hunt for the title too. Besides, how much more money can Cleveland spend to keep him happy? I actually think we could make a very good presentation.
