Los Angeles– All the Hawks’ talk about refocusing after the All-Star break wouldn’t mean much if they lost this game. The Clippers were shorthanded, still spinning from recent trades and had played at Portland the night before. The Hawks were fresh, back at full strength and had a chance to start their four-game Western Conference trip in style.

– The Clippers were ripe for a beating, and the Hawks obliged. “This game was a challenge for our mental focus,” Smoove said. “We couldn’t worry about who they had playing.”

– The Clippers pushed the Hawks while losing at Philips Arena on Feb. 3 but this wasn’t the same team. Baron Davis sat out with a sore back. Marcus Camby was traded on Monday. Al Thornton and Sebastian Telfair were traded before the game on Tuesday.

Al Horford, fresh off his first All-Star appearance, went for a career-high 31 points. He was 12 of 15 from the floor as the Hawks shot 54 percent and scored 70 points in the paint. “The guys were finding me and I was getting a lot of good looks,” he said. “I was finishing plays and making them pay.”

– No one paid more than Clips forward DeAndre Jordan, who had all kinds of trouble with Horford. Al didn’t look like he needed a break over the weekend. “I had two really good practices,” he said. “I felt good coming into the game.”

– The Hawks led from seven minutes into the game until the final buzzer. “We got off to a pretty good start,” J.J said. “One thing we’ve got to get better at is jumping on teams and putting them away really fast. We’re still learning to do that but we’re getting better.”

– “We knew we really couldn’t give this team confidence early or we’d be in for a long night,” Smoove said.

– Smoove had 20 points, nine boards and seven assists. As complete games like this become more and more common it shouldn’t be lost that he’s having a great year.

Zaza was back from his hip injury and looked good while getting eight points and five rebounds in 18 minutes. He looked to have good lift in his legs, which is a good sign. Zaza said he felt pretty good, too. “I can’t say all the pain is gone but I will take this one,” he said. “I will keep an eye on it.”

Jamal came back from a shoulder injury and had 12 points and five assists. “It’s a real good start to the trip,” he said.

– When the Clippers threatened to get back in the game in the second quarter, the Hawks turned up their defensive pressure. They got six of their 16 steals in the period and held the Clippers to 18 points. “In the second quarter we came out and established the way we wanted the game to be,” J.J. said.

– The Hawks next head to Phoenix for a Friday night game. They face the Warriors on Sunday and the Jazz on Monday. Energy shouldn’t be a problem. “We are fresh,” Zaza said. “The couple of days off really helped us.”

– I’m out, Hawks fans.

Ok I’m going to continue with this circus. If T-Mac gets bought out, I want him in a Hawks jersey. Maybe he could play some useful mins, if not, I’m sure he will help with the tix sales….More revenue, more revenue… Just think if we provide the ASG with more revenue then they will invest more money into the team. Huh, what’s that? Did someone say the extra profit will go into their pockets. I don’t believe you…

Well here is my 2 cents if we can trade with the 76ers. I believe this gives us that big front center that we need. 15+ rebounds and defensive presence in the paint. I would love to see Dalembert, Horford,J Smith,JJ and Jamal in the last 5 minutes of a game in a playoff series.

If we’re signing broke down former dunkers who don’t win playoff games to deliver revenue, let’s go the cheap route and bring in Harold Miner.

Au contraire, mes amis, ARENAS lives to haunt the franchise for years to come. Think the HAWKS want him. No more BIBBY. Let’s play GM. I’ll trade you ARENAS and 25% of his salary for the next two years for TEAGUE and your first right now. What do you say?

Before I write anything, where are all of the Al Horford haters at?

I tend to agree with most of what’s being said on the blog. We played inside out last night, without actually going back out. I know we were up by 10 for most of the game, but the lead seemed much bigger than it was simply because of the way we were scoring. We got anything we wanted. Easy bucket after easy bucket. The gaurds weren’t dominating the ball, but instead they were feeding Big Al and Smith inside. We have to continue to do that.

The bench played pretty well when on the floor as well. JT0 had his moments last night.

Overall, great win and a great start to the 2nd half of the season. I still think it’d be great if Sund could pull the trigger for another quality guy to come off the bench, but that doesn’t seem too likely – so we’re stuck with what we’ve got. But, at this point, I’m not complaining too much about that.

Melvin- I am not sure totally how this works but the Knicks got McGrady for his expiring contract which will give them more cap space to sign a superstar. I believe that he has to be on their roster for 30 days before they can buy him out and then another 30 before he can sign with another team. That is if the Knicks want the cap break, which clearly they do. So, I don’t think McGrady will get bought out.

I believe even if the Hawks make a move, they are not one player away from beating Cleveland. One player might get them past Orlando though if it was for a true “Center” so Horford could play his natural position. So if the Hawks make a move….I want a Center.
As for the Braves, I am not fired up about the Damon Offer. I think McLouth will be just fine in the leadoff spot. He steals bases, doesn’t strikeout a great deal, and has the power to sort of have that Ricky Henderson threat to hit it out of the ballpark. I am not comparing him to Henderson by any means, only that he is a threat for the homerun. I’d prefer Dye in the outfield if the Braves are going to bring in another player.

Perkins (Celtics) is a better actual Center than Horford. Horford is more of a finesse player, which makes him better suited for the PF position, rather than a true Center. Horford isn’t as physical in the paint as he needs to be…. Watch Horford against taller Centers, he cannot defend them.

No Brainer!
Schultz, great subject with an easy answer. No brainer. That is if the management is serious about stepping up and competing for a championship.
Hoops, Excellent! Another no Brainer. As good a player and hard worker as Horford is, he is a power forward who cant or doesn’t play effective defense at the 5 spot. He is a liability at the basket. The key to beating the Hawks is to get to the rim on a half court set, so you can take Josh out of the equation and isolate Horford under the basket where he has been touched repeatedly. Horford cannot protect the basket from the interior and that’s exactly what a center MUST do!
We watched, J Oneal, Shaq, Camby, Stoudamire and other centers become available and made 0, zero, non, nil, nada, not at all, we made no freaking effort to get what was clearly our weakest link coming into the season and is still our most venerable spot.
Lets trade Horford for Lopez or Stoudamire and maximize our potential. Otherwise we will be having this same discussion this time next year.
Right now we are at a point where we should move on a real time basis and not wait to play catch up in the off season. That never works because every body gets better in the off season. Move while the chase is on!

INSIDE -OUT …. 31 points for Horford against an All Star Center- Get the man more touches. Josh had a good game as well -he really fills the stat sheet night in night out -Also his passing is rediculous this year he is a really good passer -These guys will only get better -I luv it

With all that said -I tend to agree with Stephen A Smith that the hawks have a good chance to make the ECF if they face they face Boston 2nd round but Cleveland and Orlando are just to much for us- We dont have the size up front to deal with Howard,Shaq,Gortat,Varijaeo etc…

Illgauskas would be a nice pick up -the man is a dam oak tree in the middle and he takes up alot of space – I really want Mcgee from Washington, but i dont know if we have the peices to make a move.

What did I say 2 weeks ago about Marvin, for every good game he has he disappears for 3 or 4, He did absolutely nothing last night -how the hell do u go two full quarters without scoring. O i almost forgot he got his shot air mailed twice for those keeping track-

Jamison is good but Amare would have really made me a believer that the CAVS could win it all- I just dont think they hv enuff to beat LA in 7 games. Watch out for Dallas as well. Butler and Haywood will improve that team IMO
Dam it couldnt we have atleast made an offer for Haywood, Our owners are really sum glass half full types if the think joe smith and zaZa are enuff to compete with the big boiz……

Is it me or has Bibby’s shot been off dam near all year -The man is getting slower by the minute Marvin and Bibby are becoming liabilites on both ends of the floor –
I would have liked to get either Illgauskas or Haywood two huge guys to put in the middle while smoove and Horford go to work. We wont get out of the second round if we face Orlando or Cleveland -just dont have enuff size -and some of yall are dillusional if u think Joe Granddaddy Smith and ZAZA will be enuff to compete with the big boiz.

Sund should have tried to work this type deal

Uldric/Thompson for Bibby/Marvin

IMUS- I don’t think Josh will be more effective at the 3. In the NBA today, the swing position has to be able to hit that corner three. Plus, that moves Josh away from what he does best on defense which is weak side shot blocking and rebounding. Don’t get me wrong I am all for trading Marvin if we can upgrade that position, but I think we end up hurting the team with Josh at the 3.

Sometimes I think fans think just because they come up with a trade scenario the other team will just go for it.

That’s my only explantion on some of the ridiculous stuff I see here.

Marvin & Bibby for Igudala?

How about I sell the city of Philidelphia the Liberty bell? Think they’ll buy it?

Stupid is(Truth Serum)- Please do not comment on my posts as you have violated several of the genltemanly rules of this blog. Weakside, btw is commonly used in basketball, to reference off the ball blocked shots and refering to player spacing on the court. So, I will ask you again nicely to please stop.
