Los Angeles–Another beautiful day in So Cal. Sorry to keep blabbing on about the weather but, man, since leaving Miami I’ve been desperate for some real winter sunshine (not that fake Atlanta sun where you see it but it has nothing to do with the actual temperature). I thought I would get some real weather in Dallas but of course they had record snow. So, yeah, I’ve been soaking in the So Cal sun.
I’m sure the Hawks have, too, but Woody likes the way they’ve been working while on the clock. The Hawks ran and ran and ran on Monday, then went hard again Tuesday. If any Hawks came back from the break lethargic, Woody shook em out of it.
“Guys are focused and there’s been no whining for all the running and stuff we’ve done,” Woodson said. “Everybody is just doing what they have to do.”

Hawks won't have to deal with him again. (nba.com)
— The Clippers traded Marcus Camby to Portland for Travis Outlaw and Steve Blake during the day Tuesday and then lost at Portland that night. Camby didn’t play for Portland and Blake and Outlaw didn’t play for the Clippers though those two are expected to be available vs. the Hawks tonight.
You might recall it was Camby’s 20 rebounds, not All-Star Chris Kaman’s unconscious 7-for-21 gunning, that gave the Hawks the most trouble during that hard-fought 103-97 victory on Feb. 3.
Apparently neither Camby nor his old Clippers teammates are happy he’s gone to Portland. Clippers GM Mike Dunleavy said the Clippers could make another deal before tomorrow’s deadline.
– According to statistician Harvey Pollack, Hawks players missed 14 games due to injury before the All-Star break, the lowest total in the league. Only four Hawks players have sat out games with injuries, the second-lowest total behind Minnesota’s three. Pollack, the director of statistical information for the 76ers, annually produces the “NBA Statistical Yearbook” so his stuff is gold.
This tidbit brings us back to Stan Van Gundy’s contention last month that the Hawks have had “no adversity whatsoever” when it comes to injuries. I’m thinking you should knock on wood, Hawks people. And don’t blame me if a Hawks player pulls up lame tonight.
– Zaza is mourning his Georgian countryman, Nodar Kumaritashvili, the luger who died during an Olympic training accident on Friday. He said he didn’t know Nodar but his wife did, and that such connections are not uncommon in a country with a population of 4.3 million.
“It’s a small country, so it felt like my friend died,” Zaza said. “Just like me, when he is outside the country he is representing the country, especially at the Olympics. I can imagine how excited he was. It’s so sad.”
– Slam highlights ‘Nique’s All-Star weekend. ‘Nique loves the kids.
Late adds:
– As Najeh and other blog people note below, the Cavs have agreed in principle to a three-way trade that gets them Antawn Jamison and Sebastian Telfair. It looks like Cavs got tired of waiting on the Suns to pull trigger on a deal for Amare Stoudemire and moved on to Jamison, who is the so-called “stretch four” they’ve sought.
Like Amare, Jamison isn’t a tough, defensive-minded type but he doesn’t need to share the post with Shaq and he’s another guy to convert those open looks created by LeBron. Yep, the Cavs are scary good.
– Almost forgot this disclosure: I’ll be flying with the team to Phoenix after tonight’s game and also on to San Francisco and Salt Lake. It’s not the normal procedure for newspaper writers, at least not for the last three decades or so, but it’s something the AJC is trying on a trial basis for this trip. If not for this arrangement I wouldn’t be here due to the significant costs involved with sending a writer on the road. The Hawks didn’t like that, so that started a conversation with my bosses about getting me on their plane. We’ll see how it goes.
I still plan to cover the team like normal but it’s something you need to know. That is all.
– Talk amongst yourselves, Hawks fans.

Three-way Cavs-Clippers-Wizards trade is done. Cavs get Jamison and Sebastian Telfair, Washington gets Al Thornton, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Brian Skinner and a first round pick, and Clippers get Drew Gooden. The race for #2 in the East is on, now that #1 is all but locked up. Hopefully the Heat don’t get Amare.

Yeah, lets add a guy to the roster who’s physical abilities and talent (lack thereof) REALLY has no beneficial effect on the team at all……besides committing fouls and being overly aggressive which is mistaken for having such great defense.
This is the NBA not youth league basketball dealing with fragile children emotions, who cares about rewarding people for hustle IF (keyword: IF) that hustle still doesnt mean anything or provide something beneficiary to the team.
Get that scrub out of here for someone that can atleast be useful.

AJ,
To pressure them to make a move to improve the team. Happens all the time. A-list stars like Shaq (well, back when he was an A-lister) and Kobe have done it, as have B-listers like Pierce and McGrady. This particular offseason, he might do it to hint that the Hawks need to make a move to bring the team closer to a title or else he might bolt elsewhere (that was Kobe’s tactic before he exercised his option a couple years back…it didn’t work, but he tried). In reality, I doubt he will. His critiques in the past were all “we need more veterans and depth.” He hasn’t talked about team needs since after the Celtics series, I don’t think.

The Hawks needed Camby, but don’t seem to have the purse to make that kind of deal happen. Locking up Marvin looks like a bad move now even though everyone said it was really smart at the time. There are no attractive pieces to be moved. Cash and maybe Mo are the only things the Hawks can offer. If Teague had played more and was ready for leadership now, you could possibly offer up Bibby right now given how Jamal fills in, but that didn’t happen. I believe in miracles and it will take one to get past the second round of the playoffs regardles of where we end up.

nire, I was being sarcastic, based on today’s frequent posts about how the ASG aren’t “going for it”. Funny, fans can complain about what they perceive as a lack of ownership support but heaven forbid that a player do the same.
Logo, he may get more time here but he’d have a significantly better chance to win a ring there. Like I said on the earlier blog, Hawks, Magic and Celtics are playing for the second chair in the East… Stern could go ahead and send the Cavs to the Finals once the Jamison trade is complete.

Let me get this straight, you play your entire career for a team that is now the odds on favorite to win a title, but instead of returning to your home for a decade where they may have the biggest parade north of New Orleans, you think he should come to Atlanta? Well, I guess there’s nothing wrong with being an exuberant fan. Don’t be too disappointed when Z returns home to Cleveland. Sund should spend more time chasing someone like Gooden or another “nomad” who doesn’t have deep roots with a contender.

Astro,
this goes for you:
“…My take: He’s too nice of a guy. It’s both the best and worst thing about him. If you ever played basketball, you know there’s one rule with big guys: Make sure they touch the ball enough. If they don’t get enough touches, they get cranky. They stop running the floor. They stop setting good picks. They stop crashing the boards. Big guys are like women — they need affection, they need to be stroked every so often, and if you ignore them, they start to resent you. …”
the above is part of Bill Simmons column in ESPN, and in this case about D. Howard. However the relevance relates our a discussion in the past on the negative effects of the lack of touches on big men’s game.

If Big Z gets bought out, he will probably end up back in Cleveland. And if Drew Gooden gets bought out, he will probably end up back in Dallas (although I heard Charlotte mentioned in the rumors too).
JJ is not the kind of guy to put Management on notice that they need to do something to keep him. But, that also does not mean that he wont sign somewhere else if he he thinks they have a better chance of winning a championship, especially if he’s getting more money.

Everyone knows that the key to the hawks post games lies in having a formidable low post presence and he did absolutely nothing to to make that happen., Weve watch J, oneal, shaq, camby and amare go by with out so much as a gesture. This team will win 50-55 game which is well a head of the preseason projections, however the season is anti climatic because we already know that the hawk wont make it out of the second round. If the Bulls do end up trading Salmons to Milwaukee for 2 expiring contracts, can one of our cap experts (Manny T, nire, whoever) give me an idea of what kind of contract they might be able to offer JJ this offseason?

OB, as I understand it, Chicago will be able to offer a max deal if that Salmons trade goes through. If the Knicks acquire TMac, they will have enough cap space for one max deal and another contract that may be around $2M short of max. Wizards should be close to having room for a max contract also. I’m sure that several sites will have a full list tomorrow evening of who cleared what type of space from this week’s activities. Although Andre Miller signed for $7 mil per year (compared to Bibby’s $6 mil), Miller’s contract is only 2 years (team option 3rd). I would have preferred a deal like that for Bibby. That way we could trade his expiring contract during next season if he doesnt produce.

Andre Miller may be better than Bibby, but I find it hard to believe that he’s any quicker. Even in his prime, quickness was never his strong suit.

Irrational – [e - ra - shon - al] (adjective) – Descriptive of persons who think the Hawks MUST make a trade.
Thanks to Sund’s offseason work, the Hawks are one team that does NOT need to make a trade. Watch how the Cavs, Celts, & Mavs will have setbacks while trying to integrate new teamates. Our familiarity will be an assest in a playoff series against Cavs. I like our team! Go Hawks!

One of Al Horford’s main goals this offseason should be to develop his mid-range jumper to Chris Kaman’s level. If he knocked that down with consistency out to 16-17 feet it would open up so much for him and the Hawks offensively.

Are the Clipper fans rooting for Hawks or are just sad when Hawks miss a run out? They seem to be having more fun watching the Hawks than their team. Must be one of the reasons Hawks are drawing a better crowd on the road than at home.

Hawks defense was very crisp in that half (save for a few possessions). I was straight giddy when Joe Smith made his first jumper, but naturally, his next clanked off the front rim. Everyone seems to have an extra bounce in their step.

Oh yeah, and Horford’s hands are working again. Dude catches everything that comes near him. He had problems after that Houston game a few eeks ago. Tonight, he looks to be back to his usual sure-handed form.
And despite the above comments, even Zaza looked like he came to play tonight.
That Kaman ain’t no joke… I’d love to know if we really had a trade made to acquire him and if the ASG truly nixed the deal. His game would like butta with our squad.

Joe said it right. Cleveland is just plain ass greedy. They already have the best player in the game, they have the best record in the league, yet they are not satisfied. They just keep adding players and re-tooling. How many All Stars are on their team right now? I understand you have all the $$ to spend, but that does not make it right!
It’s not over till the end of season, though. Remember how Cavs ran through the league last year and still came up short in the playoffs? We’ll see if they are able to keep James by winning it all.
I like Hawks efforts so far. Defensive intensity, getting into passing lanes, reading the offence and picking up multiple steals. These guys came in focused tonight. Now they have to keep it up!

In the case of Cleveland, LeBron James literally doubles the value of their franchise, according to Bill Simmons. Even if they have money problems (which I don’t know that they do), if I were running that team, I would be doing everything to try to keep LeBron happy. It’s not greed when the possibility of losing the best player in the game and half the value of your franchise is staring you in the face.

I know the main reason Cavs are spending all that bread is to make sure they can resign James. So if they can make those trades, spend all that $$, then good for them. Just hope they get the returns for it.

WIZ win their first (as a new team) against one of the worst (T-Wolves). JAMISON gone, Z in. GOODEN almost finished his coffee before leaving. Al THORNTON and BRIAN SKINNER along for the ride on D.C. transit.
The blow-up is almost complete. Only the ultimate irony remains – GILBERT ARENAS’ contract is intact. I’m sayin’ he stays and he plays for the next two years until his player option year. The club will be hoping he re-establishes himself as an elite league player so he will have options that don’t need to be exercised in D.C.
BTW, the luxury tax was eliminated according to my calculations by this latest trade. IRENE POLLIN breathes a sigh of releif as the asking price to TED LEONSIS skies.
Oh, and the WIZ get the CAVS first, somewhere between pick # 28 and 32.

I wonder if Teague plays that matador defense in practice, allowing his man to get by him and then poking the ball away from behind. That certainly isn’t the way to learn how to play defense in the NBA. It worked tonight for some steals but more often than not, it will expose his bigs to potential foul trouble. With his quickness, it’s inexcusable for him not to move his feet and instead rely on his hands to play the ball. Bad technique that needs to change.
Nice win!
