Heat at Hawks, AKA Woody Looking At What Happens After The Weekend

Woody didn’t give the expected “win this one for momentum going into the All-Star break” spiel. Instead, he’s more concerned about what the Hawks do when they return to work on Feb. 15 in LA.

“After tonight’s game we really to make a serious push,” he said. “We need to be committed after the All-Star game. Guys will get a chance to rest their bodies over the break but they’ve really got to be more committed when they come back. Not that they haven’t done that so far, but the mental focus has really got to be there.”

Not surprisingly, Woody wants to see better defense and rebounding.

“We have so much slippage in those areas because we are not committed to the scheme,” he said.

Offensively, he said the Hawks need to be sharper in the halfcourt because that’s how opponents are trying to force them to play.

“The teams we play know we are much better when we are up and down” he said.

Jamal was a late scratch. The Hawks said he aggravated his left shoulder in his sleep last night. He’s had trouble with the shoulder in the past. Tough break for the Hawks under any circumstances, but especially because Jamal usually lights up the Heat.

Zaza (hip) is out. His MRI showed no significant damage but the Hawks decided to sit him until after the All-Star break. After tonight they next play on Feb. 17 at the Clippers, giving Zaza a total of 12 days of rest.

– USA Basketball released its roster for this summer’s world championships and the 2012 London Olympics. No Hawks are on it. J.J. played in the 2006 FIBA World Championships, when the U.S. won bronze.

– After the Heat lost to the Bulls on Saturday for its fifth straight defeat, Dwyane Wade said coach Erik Spoelstra’s offense is too predictable and questioned whether Spo is willing to be flexible. The two later tried to downplay his comments but no one was really buying it.

Wade of course can become a free agent this summer. So the whole thing set off speculation that he wants Spoelstra out at the same time Heat prez Pat Riley appears to be doing everything he can to trade for Amare Stoudemire.

Sounds like Wade is frustrated to be on a bad team but he had to know it would be like this. He also knows Riley isn’t one to let his team struggle for too long before making a move, so help should be on the way.

– Talk amongst yourselves, Hawks fans.

MC – Tell Jamal that he will soon have a 8 seconds backcourt violation. He came very close many times.

If we win today and Orlando loses @ chi or @ cle than we go to all star break as 2nd in the East.

That will give Stern another reason to pick Smoove when/if Pierce/AI/Garnett sit out.

Marvin Williams is the primary option on the court at the moment.

Can’t expect Teague to light it up with no help out there. I mean seriously, you gotta have players on the court that the offense can run through for this guy to be effective. What good is gonna come from a lineup featuring JT0, Mo Evans, Marvin Williams, Joe Smith, and Jason Collins. None of those guys really strike fear in a defender. This is when you’ll see the Hawks struggle to get buckets, and you’ll see Teague start trying to do too much (IE – get his shot blocked in the lane). There’s no credible offensive threat on the floor for him to get the ball to.

And this is exactly what Stan Van Gundy was saying about the Hawks. We havent faced any adversity all year (unlike Orlando and Boston who’ve dealt with injuries).

Here we are with no Crawford, and no ZaZa, and our bench is giving us nothing.

Wabe,

Exactly. Teague would look a lot better if he got to play some minutes with the starters

I know he missed that last one, but J-Smoove is looking more and more confident shooting that jumper just inside the 3-point line. If he can start knocking that down consistently, he could pose problems for teams like Cleveland (who struggle to cover a 4 who can stretch the floor).

Hawks have gone ice-cold.

I know we don’t have Crawford or Zaza, but we blew Miami out a couple of times in that playoff series, and we were pretty banged up then too.

Gotta step it up.

The shots are there for whoever wants to take them.

Marvin and Bibby both have 2 buckets between them. We talked about how much better some of these guys look when JJ/JAMAL aren’t dominating the ball. Well, with no JAMAL, the shots are there for anybody to step up and make them tonight.

JJ and J-Smoove will get theirs.

Who else will step up?

teague is HORRIBLE!!!

i really wish i could understand the psychology with this board in bad bench players (i always use salim as the best example – a guy people were screaming for to get more pt, who, of course is now out of the league – because he SUCKED).

same with teague. what player are you people watching!?!?!?! seriously, clue me in, because i just don’t see it.

i see a guy with a top ten god-awful jump shot who can pretty much get by his guy at will, but then is 50/50 at best on having any clue what to do (watch any game where he and the other subs come in with a 20+ point lead to close the game and watch them barely end the game with maybe a 10 point win – oh so close to a real nba point guard in lawson….)

really, i suggest many of you take to serious deep inner reflection over the all star break on what has become of your psyche that leads you, as a fan of maybe the number two team in the league record-wise at the break to spend your fan energy on bemoaning how awful the hawks are, how awful the offense is with joe johnson, how awful bibby is, how awful marvin is, how smith can’t shoot, how zaza is awful, how horford is not a real center, and how all would be solved if they just gave randmo and teague more playing time.

crazy, crazy people…….

9 techs for Woody? Nobody can say he has not been protecting his team.

Josh did not steal that jump ball. He just jumped higher and quicker. How dumb are these refs?

Starters will have to log heavy minutes, but Hawks will win this game.

With Zaza out, hopefully Morris can get some playing time. I know that Collins needs to work his way into shape, but we need to see what Morris can do in a real game.

No Crawford!! We’ll need someone to step-up, I vote for Marvin!

No disrespect stevo, but how can you say you’ve seen anything from Teague when he’s clocking like 4 or 5 minutes a night.

I’ll admit, he hasn’t looked great. But, I’d say he hasn’t had much of a shot. On top of that, do you see another stud PG on the Hawks roster? Bibby clocks 20+ minutes a night, and he’s clearly declined. At this point, he’s unless he’s making jumpers. You’d think that the lack of a TRUE PG would have Woody wanting to develop this kid and get him playing better ball because it’s not like the Hawks are set at PG.

Tonight is an ideal night to point out a Hawks flaw. To me, this is exactly why the Hawks struggle against deeper teams like Orlando. Outside of Crawford, whose a quality guy coming off the Hawks bench?

O'Brien

Wabe,

Although the Hawks dont have a quality bench guy, that can be atrributed to payroll. Orlando, Cleveland and Boston all have payrolls in the $75 – $80 mil range. Hawks payroll is $65 mil

I would love for the Hawks to add a guy like Salmons to give them another scorer off the bench. He’s also a good defender that has the size to guard SG/SF..
