J.J. (flu) makes trip to Memphis, Zaza (hip) likely out until after All-Star

Joe Johnson missed practice again today with flu-like symptoms but was to travel with the team today for tomorrow’s game at Memphis.

“That makes me feel better,” Woody said.

No word yet on the results of Zaza’s MRI on his troublesome left hip. He won’t make the trip to Memphis and is doubtful for Wednesday’s game against the Heat at Philips Arena.

The Hawks won’t play again until Feb. 17 at the Clippers, and holding out Zaza until then would give him 12 days off since he last played.

“I think we are going to go ahead and rest him until after the All-Star game unless he tells me on Wednesday he feels good enough to play,” Woody said, adding that he doesn’t anticipate that will happen.

Zaza is the primary backup to center Al Horford. His absence likely means more playing time for Joe Smith and Jason Collins.

The Hawks need to string together about 8 straight wins to make up some ground and move past the Magic in the east.

yea we need zaza but.why dont the hawks use randolph morris and collins on dwight howard.morris has good moves offensively that will keep dwight busy and maybe in foul trouble.its harder to dominate the way he did against guys your on size. instead of the 6′9 horford and 6′8josh.give those guys a chance woody, is’nt that why u got them, throw some bodies on howard who cares if they foul out.

ZaZa has been very inconsistent this year anyways. Hopefully, this gives Collins an opportunity, and hopefully he will take advantage of it.

Maybe the extra PT for Joe Smith will allow him to find his jumper. I wonder what his FG% for the year is?

And if JJ is not 100%, I hope Woody does not play him 40 minutes. Bring him along slowly.

Everyone talks about D.Howard as if he is Wilt or Shaq in terms of size.
Fact is (per draft express) DH is only 1/4 inch taller than Al. Granted, he may have grown [perhaps an inch], given that he was coming out of HS when measurements were taken. Also, his wingspan is 4 inches longer [vital info to BK] making him a longer player if not that much taller. I think the big thing, is the health food supplements that he and LeBron seem to have added to their diet.

PS – Stern would be fine with those two guys staying healthy and making sure they had a healthy diet. Right.

Grandad, Howard has grown since he was drafted. I’m pretty sure that he is now a legit 6′11″. Keep in mind that those measurements were done after his senior year in high school, while Horford’s were done after his junior year in college. Howard is taller and bigger than Horford. His offensive game is still developing, but there is no question that dude is a “freakish athlete”. Essentially, he is a bigger version of Shawn Kemp with comparable leaping abilities.

Did anyone see Howard hit that 10 foot jumper pff glass yesterday (ala Tim Duncan)? It was a very scary moment for big men in the NBA. If develops a face-up game that forces guys to come out and guard him, it is all over. Because he has the quickness and strength to take one dribble and leap past someone who steps out to guard him.

No, he is not the most skilled offensive player in the league but he is more than a handful for a true PF like Horford.

Grandad what supplements. I heard that lebron only eats the leanest meats and freshest vegetables. He drinks only juice from hand picked berries grown deep in the amazonian rain forest. and has his milk squeezed directly from a camel into his cereal bowl to retain its nutrients. Thats how superstars diet.

It seems like the Hawks fans are obssessed with DHoward. If our big men were as relentless as he is on the glass and defense there is no way they dominate us the way they do.

I wonder if D- Wade also partakes of the same “supplements” that LBJ and D -12 inbibe?

Anywho,so Woodson fels better now that Joe is making the trip to memphis. Can’t have the team learning how to play without Joe can we?
Seriously, this will be a very tough game because the Grizzlies have the confidence as well as the talent to win and win big.No matter what the outcome, the next couple of games w/out ZaZa should give Jason Collins ans Randolph morris some playing time. You never know when their play may be needed later on down the road and but for ZaZa’s injury, they would not likely have seen any playing time.

Why not play Randolph Morris?

Bottom line grandad is Howard is longer and taller with offensive ability,we need guys that r his size and on our team[morris, collins]to bang with him, get fouls that horford and smith cant afford.everyone that beats the magic match him with players his size, not undersize small fowards playing center.wWe can get away with that against most teams, but when teams like LA[.Odum,Bynum,Gasol.]Cavs[shaq,veraja,]we have to use our bigs, which Woody seems reluctant 2 do.We dont stand a chance against these kinda teams. We have to go big,at least sometimes.Havent seeN Morris Horford and Josh on the floor 4 an extended period.Hell Marvin only shows up once a week anyway,it wont hurt 2 try.

So far, we have yet to figure out how to even be competitive against Orlando, let alone how to beat them. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m not confident about our ability to beat Memphis at this point. Earlier in the season, I would have been excited and confident about our chances against Memphis. But now, like a lot of you, I’m just happy if we pull out a win.

How many times during the last couple of yrs have we heard Woodson complain about our inability to overcome another teams superior size and length? Now that Sund has given him more size and length, he completely ignores that additional size and length and insists on playing SMALL BALL. Here’s a list of our tallest and biggest bench players and how Woodson has chosen to utilize, or underutilize them:

(1)JCollins-7′ 265lbs(yeah right) has averaged 4.1 very inconsistent MPG and received DNP CD, OR INACTIVE in all but 15 of 49gms.

(2)RMorris-6′11″ 260lbs has averaged 4.67 very inconsistent MPG and received DNP CD, OR INACTIVE in all but 21 or 49gms.

(3)ZPachulia-6′11″ 275lbs has averaged 13.86MPG and played in 47 of 49gms.

(4)JSmith-6′10″ 230lbs has averaged 8.8 inconsistent MPG and has played in 36 or 49gms.

And given a choice between dressing, let alone playing, either RMorris, JCollins or 6′5″ 210lb offensively challenged, one dimensional MWest, Woodson has repeatedly chosen MWest. And some of you insist he’s doing an excellent job of coaching and making decisions. Yet, he can’t even figure out that he needs dress, utilize and match his bigger players to the oppositions, to help rectify our current rebounding woes. It would also help us contain or even effectively play Bigs like DHoward or Shaq, especially when lesser teams are having much more success.

During the early yrs of the teams progress, Woodson successfully brought the team forward, but now he’s holding it back.

@ Tee: “Why not play Randolph Morris?” yes, why not? might as well give him a shot.

@ ken strickland: i actually thought Collins could help vs. big teams. he’s a big, smart defender. then i saw him vs. Magic. now i’m not so sure.

MICHAEL CUNNINGHAM-Agreed, he didn’t do all that well against the Magic, but he certainly schooled Shaq in the 2nd gm of a back to back with Cleveland, and completely took him out of the gm. It’s too bad Woodson didn’t have sense enough to utilize him or Morris in the 1st gm. The real problem is Woodson, who seems to think he can systematically ignore his backups for extended periods of time and still expect positive and immediate results whenever he does decide to play them.

I also believe we can be far more competitive against Orlando if we created our own matchup advantages. If we played RMorris @PF and switch Smoove to SF, they would be hard pressed to matchup. They have no PF that can handle RMorris in the post, and no SF that can handle Smoove. It wouldn’t hurt us defensively because Woodson’s beloved switching DEF has our Bigs guarding SG’s & PG’s in the backcourt anyway.

However, you and I both know none of this will happen, because Woodson isn’t imaginative or confident enough to step outside his narrowly constructed box, or coaching approach. When we go up against DHoward, it’s just plain stupid for Woodson to have 3 backup centers, with the size and height of Zaza, Morris and Collins, only to have 1 or 2 of them end up with DNP CD next to their names. What makes it even more stupid is our recent rebounding issues.

woody has a brain about the size of a pea. i love horford ,he palys with energy & heart,is a good rebounder. i just dont think much of him on defense,he never puts a body on who he is defending.woody doesnt have the sense to put our big men & foul the hell out of shag or
howard or other big men . he shows no imagination on offense or defense or substitutions.
he has to go or we will never get better.

i think that zaza should be traded anyway.. he still slows the game down when he is in….. im not sayin that he isnt good.. im saying that if we can can get a lagit seven footer for him and jason collins, then we should.. i know somebody wants to come from a sorry team to a team that might be able to win a championship this year.. and yes we need more help in the playoffs for howard and shaq.. thats why we havent beat neither one of those teams this year
